Hello I'am having troubles with a field that need a required value. I use a radio button so the customers need to accept our terms of delivery. The button only has a value "Yes" and is standaard unchecked. When I send my form with the button NOT selected so there is no input, the databases accepts it. How come? My Text fields wich also need required input does work the right way. When you do not enter any data in this kind of fields a pop-up box shows and tell you that field xxx needs input. So does anybody know why it doensn't work with radio buttons! Greetings Jukkie

I currently have a large database running on Q&A on DOS. I am looking to migrate this over to FM but I'm not sure how to transfer the programming and whether FM will understand it. Any ideas? ...or do I have to start from scratch with just the data?

Ok so I've got a filemaker database that has been setup with all our forms and what not. I teach children with visual impairments, to give you all some background. I've recently moved into the realm of PDA's and so have filemaker mobile 2.1 with filemaker 6 since that's what the school district is using. Anyway my problem is that everyone has used filemaker really just to print out forms, not for actual data entry so much. I only have ten fields I can use on the mobile version. I need to keep attendance, and people previously have just used paper, but I'd like to stay digital if at all possible. My thought was that when I saw a student I could go into the pda a…

Does anyone know how I can set the 'Zoom In' level for ALL the open windows? I have a fp5 file with a button and script to change the zoom level to 150%. But I want to run this across multiple USR files so that they all zoom to 150%. I have another file which opens them from a server. I can zoom my current window but none of the others with: Set Zoom Level [150%] Tried also with the 'Open' command or 'Go To Layout' but the files are already open and this doesn't work. Does anyone have any ideas on how I might do this? Thanks!

Is it possible open a FMP file via a windows command prompt? I am trying to schedule an export by having a file that fires the export script upon opening the file & then it closes the application. I was hoping to have a batch file that would open the FMP file. I am not sure if this is possible. Any input would be appreciated! Thanks! John

Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone had an answer for why in FileMaker 7 if you press the ESC key on the keyboard to cancel and operation, it's take so long, but running our 5.5 System, pressing the ESC key cancels the operation almost immediately. Both systems are exactly the same as the FileMaker 7 Database is a conversion of the 5.5 Database. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I recently reinstalled Windows XP Pro (SP2). This was a clean install after scrubbing the drive (Gotta nuke the site from orbit, it's the only way to be sure). I reinstalled all the programs including FM Developer 5.5. However, whenever I run the updater, I get this error and it stops. ! Internal Error 2755. 1612, C:WindowsInstaller253e7.msi OK Anyone encounter this or have any idea what gives? I even tried installing it on an old 2000 box and get the same error.

I just upgraded to Tiger and as soon as I go into layout mode and choose the menu choice "field formatting" or "field borders" the program crashes. Tested the same database on FM Pro 7 on Tiger and the same crash is happening. Same database on Panther 10.3.9 functions without problem. Can´t find any postings on this and would appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

During our migration to FM7 i require a method to allow users to seamlessly open files. I do not wish for users to wonder if the file they want is in Fm6 or Fm7. I can maintain a master database of file locations that the launcher application can reference. I am in the process of trying to get a FM7 file launcher to work in order to open both FM6 and FM7 files. I am attempting to use "open url" script step with the following parameters. for an FM6 file: FMP5://serveripnumber/filename.fp5 for an FM7 file: fmp7://:)@serveripnumber/filename.fp7 Of course the FM7 one works fine. the Fm6 one will open filemaker but not open the file.

Hi I recently purchased another client copy of FMP which is now version 7 - all the other FMP licences we have for clients are other v6 or v5.5 - we are running FMP Server on v6 too. I found the following 'help' file on filemaker.com but don't understand it. filemaker help page Does anyone know if I can use a v7 client to access v6 files without having to make any changes to the rest of my setup. I need to create a field which looks at an existing field and strips out everything in it which is between chevrons, i.e. replace with nothing. How do I put this into the function? our company recently purchased 2 licenses of FM-8 advanced(both unique). I have the pleasure of being a recipient of one of the copies. For the first few days everything was going fine and the new features are great. However i have encountered a problem. We have two servers which host our files. Both are live Mon-Fri with many users interacting. The new Tabs Facility is really useful in cutting down the number of layouts and navigation scripts. Does anyone have a clue to determine which tab the user is on? I could find no function anywhere that has anything to do with the tabs. I tried putting an invisible box around each tab and passing a script the tab name, but that didn't work. Steve

I've been having server crashing issues (related to Apple Remote Desktop crashing, but that's another topic) that have left me with a big corrupted file. This file would crash FM7 using the "Recover" command. However, under FM8 the recover command worked successfully. So, if you have a corrupted data file that can't be recovered FM7, you may want to try FM8.

I use FileMaker Pro 7 extensively to import data from external Oracle databases. I have a demo copy of FileMaker Pro 8. I like it a lot. It seems faster, the new tab control is great, and the ability to create a new table from an import is a real time saver. But, I can't get the ODBC connection with Oracle to work! I've read the FM user's guide and downloaded a few new drivers, but to no avail. I wonder if the problem could either be the fact that I'm using a demo version or that I need FileMaker Pro 8 Advanced. I seem to remember reading about a recent change to ODBC connections. My company is running FMP 6 with 5.5 server, I have been working on a proposal for a few months now to buy a new server and go to 7. Now that 8 came out I tried to tack on 8 to my proposal but management is saying they would rather work 1 version behind the latest. The fear is that 8 will not be stable and require updates that could hinder productivity. I really feel if we are going to upgrade then 8 is our best option. It has many of the features built in that they have been asking me to include in the new/old system. Can anyone help me make an argument? I was hoping that Menu Sets could be assigned to Privilege Sets; apparently not - and if I missed it, please someone point me to it! It IS possible to use a startup script to set the custom menu for a Privilege Set, for example, a basic set for Users, an edit set for Privileged Users, and filemaker default for Admins. The script command is- Install Menu Set [specified menu set name] But, you can't directly specify a set in Define Accounts and Privileges; the choice there remain the same as in 7 (All, Editing only, Minimum). Since I seem to be a magnet for finding bugs, and since I was unable to find a way to report them to FMI, I contacted someone on another forum who is an FMI techie. He gave me the web page to report problems: Link One that I stumbled across yesterday: If you try to concatenate a file path in a calc: "c:FolderName" & filename. You'll get an error. Solution is to add a space after the 2nd "" above and use TRIM to remove it. Steve

I'm not sure where this belongs but posted it here as it affects FM in general. Came back to my computer one day after it had been in general use by the family. Found all the icons for FM files were different. All but one changed from the familiar blue file to a plain white box with black outline and in the lower left corner was the miniature version of the blue file. Another FM file (the only one on the desk top but closed) had the icon of one of my kids games. It still worked as the FM solution I expected but the icon is different. What happened? Any ideas about how to undo this?

Background: I am in charge of maintaining a database of product spec sheets which contain a technical detail drawing. The drawings are created in Freehand MX and cut & pasted into the FM container field. The database (FM ver. 5.5) is currently running in OS9 classic mode with no printing quality or pdf export quality issues. The issue: When I run the database in OSX (either FM 5.5 or 7) the drawings pasted into the container fields will not print with the same quality that they do from OS9. We need to import data from an Excel document that has First and Last Name and some with middle initial, in the same field. Each name is on a separate line, but as I said, "John Doe" or "John B. Doe" is in one field. My FileMaker solution has two separate fields of "FirstName" and "LastName". How do I get the names in their respective fields? Thanks for your help, James

Has anyone had much experience with the tab control feature yet? I'm working on a database that tracks editing information (e.g. shot numbers / shot details / lighting / clip length / etc...) and I want to use the tabs to display various categories of info. In layout mode, the content of one tab disappears when clicking on another tab. However, in browse mode, the content from all the tabs is displayed on top of each other. So...after adding the control and defining tabs, how do I enter the fields onto the tabs so that their content is only displayed when their corresponding tab is selected? I have just written some scripts making use of the new $$ global script variables to pass parameters between scripts and I was getting some odd results. On monitoring the values of the script variables I discovered that the variables were not passing and it turns out the reason is that I was using a script in one file to call a script in another file. The significance of the comment in the help file "global until the file closes" has now hit me. The scripts may be "global" in the file but they are also "local" to the file. The "save as pdf" feature is great... (even if the resulting files are bloated). I have it working beautifully (via scipting) on both Mac & Windows in FMP8 and FMP8A. However, when I create a runtime for either platform, the script(s) fail and there is not "save file as PDF"... on "excel". I even tried a custom menu set and put the PDF in the File menu... works fine in "real" versions, but isn't there in runtimes. Any ideas? (I can use OSX's printing for Mac, but would like a one button solutions for Windows as well)

I think I have found a bug in FM8 during Find mode and I need some of you to confirm it. Steps to Replicate: 1. Enter Find mode on one of your layouts. 2. Make sure the status area is displayed, so you can see the request counts, etc. 3. Create 3 find requests, total. ( the number of requests is not important) 4. Now go to any one of those requests (let us use the 3rd one). 5. Delete the 3rd request. 6. Notice that the request total count did not decrement. Hi, i'm just, finally, porting my solution to from FMP 6 to FMP 7 (8 server is unreleased, and I use FMP 7 server). Is there any obvious optimization tricks in FMP 7 that can make the database faster than 6 ? For instance I'm thinking about the variables for string maniuplation where before I had to repeat many times in the same calculation all the Right(, Left(, Middle to process one tiny chunk of string. I think I worked this out right, but I want to make certain I'm not messing anything up. I want to have a database set up with a link to a WordPerfect file. What I originally did was place a container in my database with a link to that file. Double clicking on the icon for that file brought up WordPerfect. Is this the proper way to do this? When I enter content into the new tab, all displays well in layout mode. However, in browse mode, the content from the new tab spills over on the first tab. when I open FM in either version 7 or 8 I get a pop up that says FileMaker sharing is off, etc... Thus forcing me to turn sharing on. Now I know that if I turn it on I can specify "no users", hence no sharing. My question is, does this message always come up by default or can it be disabled somehow, or do we just have to share the files and select no users if we dont want to share.

Doing a school reporting database. In one particular layout each pupil has normal data ( forename, surname, subject, class etc) but also has 3 strategies fields which staff can use to choose strategies an individual pupil may use to help them with a particular subject. The 3 strategies fields are formated to use a pop-up menu from a related database, which has only 2 fields: subject and strategy. For example "Music" and "Practise your instrument more". The problem is when I do a find for a particular class the records take about 2 seconds each to appear in list view. Well - I installed FM 8 on about 10 users machines with no difficulty ... but as soon as I stepped away, one user complained that "highlighted text" was no longer blue, but now black. this is only true on Windows - I couldn't immediately find anyway to change that. Any ideas?

Hiya, I've developed an intricate solution in FM7 that has been successfully running off FMS7 for quite some time without a problem. The file is 100% operational via FMP8 and FMP8A when being openned locally. However, when attempting to access most parts of the file remotely with any version of FM8 as the client, FM8 hangs and the server stops responding. Under windows, the FM8 client just hangs. Under OS X, it crashes with the error message: "Communication with the host was interrupted and could not be re-established. All affected windows will be closed." The problem occurs when hosted from FMS7, FMS7A, FMP8 or FMP8A, and occurs on Windows as well…

Has anyone found out if there is a way to access the Symbols menu in Browse mode with FM8? Of course it can be accessed via the Status area button and the right click in Find mode, but if you lock the status area, you can not access the menus. Also they do not want the end user to directly input data in find mode, rather use globals and then find as per a find button. With 7, I had to use an EventScript plugin with a popup menu to simulate it, however, the EventScript plugin is not suported on FM8 on windows as of yet. It would be great to access this and put it in a custom menu.

My client has FM Pro 7 setup on his home PC (PC1 running winxp home). It is networked to another PC (PC2 also running winxp home) and I've shown him how to share his databases across the network. The Database is stored on PC1. He needs to get some sort of remote access happening as he travels a lot. The problem is, his home internet connection is barely faster than dialup speeds (128kbs max) and is producing unacceptable results when trying to publish the database to the web. Getting a faster connection is impossible at this time. As a backup solution, I may install Windows XP Pro on PC1 so he can remote desktop to it when he travels and work directly with …

I have been updating all our machines to v8, fixing my value lists to not show id values, and using tabs to slim down my layouts. Everything seems great... One thing I've noticed is a significant slowdown in the display of subsummary reports in preview mode on macs. Sorting and calculating the subsummary values is the same speed, but displaying the pages on a mac is much slower than v7. It often takes several seconds to move from one page to the next with v8. I've observed this on three macs all with 10.4.2 ranging from 533MHz to 1.5GHz with the same results whether with a local file or on a network. Not a dealbreaker, but definitely irritating. Anyone …

Am I correct in assuming with FM8 Advanced that I can create a database that runs stand alone, and that others can search through and edit? I have a filemaker 6 database. I have been using calculated values for several date fields. All has been well, but now some dates are way off some are right. I am taking a user inputed date and adding 364 for one(it has never failed.) The next two always fail together calculted off the same field as the other(Approval Date). The two fields add 350 or 400 and must be in date form. They come out in date form just not the right year some time 2003, 2004,2006 but rarely 2005 like they should be. I have used FileMaker 6 on my computer without problem. I am trying the FM8 Trial version and it is overall very snappy interface, except when I use the Layout Mode. Then, if I click and hold on the Field button and start to drag the little outline of a field onto the layout to place it, the CPU meter maxes out and the interface behaves like molasses. It is very slow to respond and even when I stop moving it, a long as I keep the mouse button held down the CPU remains maxed. As another example, I try to move a field or label that I've clicked and it takes over a second for it to catch up to where I moved my mouse, and usually not quite in the right place. It makes it f…

Today for some reason I can not fathom, when I go to use the Show Window, the wrong file opens. We have a small network and the issue occures on all machines, including the server. I am trying to create a Online Event Registration Database that will enable students to signup to courses with limited seating. This database would also have to be multi-user accessible as students would be scramblimg to signup just as when tickets for a concert come available. I downloaded v8 and ordered v8 Advanced. I have a lot of cases where I use a Popup Menu (in Win XP)through a script which sometimes does nothing more than refresh the portal, but sometimes performs some really useful behavior (like changing a layout, etc.) This use to work fine in v6 (I skipped v7 for lots of resaons), but blows up and FM dies and I find myself back at my desktop. Has anyone had problems doing this in v7 or v8? Methinks they have a real bad bug. Steve

How do I insert a photo into the Body field in FM 8 using the Email Campaign Management template that came with it? I don't want the photo as an attachment. I want it in the body of the email on the right side with the size being 2" square. All of the text needs to be wraped so that it is on the left side of photo.

I have just used FileMaker 8 to create my monthly invoicing pdfs. Usually these are two pages of text per file (including one small PICT graphic) and come in about 300K. In FileMaker 8 they are a massive 2.9MB. To double-check I swapped back to v7 and produced them from there - no problem, they came out at 300K each. I PDFed another report in v8 with just text and it was still 10 times bigger than one produced in v7. Anyone else getting massive PDFs? (Mac G4 10.4.2). Ian

Hi Opening an existing solution in FM8 I came across the following problem. In FM7... My table has a number calculation field 'Max(lines::value)' - it returns the maximum value of a field in the related table. The calculation is unchecked for 'do not evaluate if all referenced fields are empty'. Therefore if there are no related records it returns a 0. My script searches this calculation field with the criteria '<1' which therefore returns all records without related values in FM8... Opening this file in v8 the zero's have disappeared from the calculated field, thus I get no results with my '<1' search and have to do an '=' search to get my fou…

In FM 7 if you ran a print script on Windows, it would either not print or revert to the default print settings. You could overcome this in certain circumstances by asking for a dialogue box to come up, however this was not an ideal work around. I was just wondering if this had been fixed in FM 8?

Using FM7. My dbase has about 15000 records, all of which have been imported from various sources, some Excel but mostly earlier versions of FM. There is a date field where the date displays correctly for all except for about 700 records where it shows up as ? ... Hi I just wanted to let everyone know that I was having issues with all buttons that were embossed with a hairline point line. In FM7 the buttons look fine. However in FM8 these buttons now look flat and ugly. The embossing is still on them, however, I had to change the line to 1 point from hairline to make it look like it did in 7. I havent tried it on the mac because this company doesnt have a mac, so I am not sure if it is only XP specific. Figured I would post it because it was such a pain in the butt to ungroup each button that I had on every layout that I had, in order to change the line point on them...

For the life of me I can't figure out the supposed email merge features in the new FMP. Help! When the ads say "multiple messages to all your customers" it suggests merging information between stock text and fields of a record to unique addresses as one needs to do in email campaigns. Read the new print manual. What it says about email is "see Help". Read "help". It says have a report in browse mode, go to file/send email and make selections. The new tab control looks good, I was hoping it would drastically cut down on the number of layouts I use.... where I have a layout that is duplicated depending on whether the user is viewing, editing, creating or deleting a record. I was hoping to do this using tabs but I cant see if I can validate data entered before they can switch tabs. E.g if they use a tab to switch to a view where the fields are accessible to edit and then change to another tab can I trigger a script that checks and validates the data before it goes to the new tab?

Along with the rename of Developer to Advanced FMI have provided an upgrade path for users like me who are not Developers but would love to get our hands on the custom features in the Developer versions. I paid an extra £70 to have the upgrade to 8 advanced rather than 8 and I think FMI should be congratulated for following up their reasoning for a name change and making it possible to move up.

The Go To Related Record bug still exists in FM8. This is were the layout name does not stick or shows "unknown" for the GTRR script step. This only happens when the table being referred to does not exist in the current file but a related file. I recently upgraded from FM3 to FM7. The new functionality is excellent, but I'm seeing flashing or flickering when manually selecting text in a FM7 field (Windows XP). This makes the text selection process appear very jittery, unsmooth and unprofessional. This is happening in every database and in every field using the desktop version of FM7 Developer. Text selection is very smooth, though, when working in an IWP version of a database. This was never an issue in FM3 for me. I notice that in FM3, the selected text appears in a black background (selection bar?), as it also does in MS Word; however in FM7 Developer, the selected text appears in a bluish background…

Hello, I'm not sure if this is a bug or a feature, but here's how to reproduce it. FYI, this is also a regression from 8.0v1 beta. 1) Create a layout and put a single field on it. 2) Define the Field Behavior so that you *cannot* enter the field in either Browse Mode or Find Mode. 3) Create a test script with the following steps: Go to Field [] Go to Next Field In 7.0v3 and 8.0v1 beta (Client) the test script would place the cursor in the field, as expected. When using FMP Advanced 8.0v1 (final), the cursor is *not* placed in the field. Can anyone confirm this? Is this a bug? Regards, Sean Mills

We have a FMP 7.0 v3 Database with about 700 records. Yesterday morning, the window was open on the desktop (with a record showing), and my wife closed the window with the "X" in the upper right corner as usual. Her computer runs Win 2000 Professional. An hour later, I double-clicked on the database and it opened with "0 Records". ALL of the records, and scriptmaker scripts, were gone! The layouts were all there. The file size was 24K, previously 1.6MB. There was nothing in the trash, and ScanDisk showed no errors. Anyone know any possible way this could have happened? We have this FM8 database that we've spent the summer taking patient data on paper and putting it into the database. The database was developed by a national organization. Our goal is to better understand what we do for our patients, so there is some data analysis required. My gestalt so far is that Filemaker is not the best to create complex reports of data analysis. FM8 has added some new reserved symbols to the list. { } $ In FM7 these were allowed now they are not. This will hurt me a lot as I use the { and } symbols in my relationship names (i.e. {Customer} Address ). The strange part is all the relations and scripts, that I created in FM7, work fine in FM8, but when it comes time to edit their names or code, filemaker puts up a warning. When you try to add one of these relations to a calculation, filemaker will not recognize the relation or field and will not let you add it. So I have to go through all my relations and rename them. I need to populate fields in a database based on a value in a different database (the master d/:. So, in the master d/b, all the records with a value of X in the category field would populate certain fields in the other database; values of Y in the master d/b would populate other fields, and so on. I'm new to FM, and the lookups I've done in the past were more straightforward because there was a common field between the databases. For this instance, I think I need to do a lookup based on an IF,THEN statement. Is this possible? Thanks!

Just downloaded a trial copy of FM 8 and it would'nt install on my Windows XP Pro. Major probem is that its looking for Service Pak 2. We have not installed SP 2 because it renders older software inoperable. How am I to get around this other that installing SP2?

Hi. I made a script to tidy up holes in a repeating fields, by moving the next to the one that's empty. But it did not work, so I did some testing. Set(non-repeating, GetRepetition(rep_field, 3) - works fine Set(rep_field, "test") - works fine Set("rep_field"- 2, "test") - works fine ... and so on even Set("rep_field", GetRepetition(rep_field, 3)) - works fine, but; Set("rep_field"- 2, GetRepetition(rep_field, 3)) - (and so on) does not work. It fills in a blank (removes what's there) Has anybody else experienced this? Any workarounds?

Hi, Does anyone know if 7.0 to 8.0 will be a simple update or yet another rewrite like with 6.0 to 7.0? I'm just finishing up migrating to 7.0 after holding off for about 6 months (due to seeing 7.1, 7.2 and 7.3 appear in the meantime) and as it would require a lot of rewriting en retesting. Now 8.0 is announced, and I am weary that it will require yet another rewrite. Not to mention the fact we wasted some money on getting update licenses for 7.0 that we will use for only 2-3 months (out of which I spent 1 month rewriting). Please say it aint so...

I've noticed a quirk between the Windows and Mac OS X versions of Filemaker Pro 7. I have a database where I have three different windows open at the same time to show three different layouts of the same database. On a Windows version of FM I can click a button and have it work right away even if the button is not in the active window. On the Mac, clicking a button in an inactive window does nothing except make the window the button is in active. I then I have to click the button again to make it work. I like the way the Windows version does it. Is it possible to make the Mac version do it the same way?
