Is it possible to move a field (or better, a group of fields) from one table to another in the same file without just deleting them and recreating them in the other table? hello everyone... i hope i can make sense here. We have an extensive database of personnel saved into filemaker with all their information. Many of them are filed that they recieve our newsletter...however we cant easily find who they are. Hi! I have a database of patient surveys that I have upgraded from FM 6 to FM 7, and am having trouble producing accurate reports using subsummaries. Normally, calculations work fine with subsummaries--if, for example, C = A + B, then I could write the following formula: C = GetSummary(A, break field) + GetSummary(B, break field) HOWEVER, if a calculation contains a formula, then FM 7 will show an average of ALL surveys (i.e. not doing a subsummary) For example, the following formula would work in FM 6, but NOT FM 7 (as far as I can tell) C = Average(GetSummary(A, break field), GetSummary(B, breakfield). I have just a little question to ask: Is it perhaps possible that Filemaker Inc didnt insert some new functions in the new FMP7 simply just because of the fact that they will interfear with some of the plug-in-companies excisting products? How much influence does theese companies have on Filemaker Inc? I would never go and by an expensive plug-in just for one function, then i would consider of changing the software to, for example, Servoy. But i am not a developer, just a simple user for a smallsize company (15 people). I am pretty new to Filemaker, and i have not yet desided if i should use Servoy instead of FMP. I really hope that this is not a fact…

Hi, I've got an odd problem and wonder whether anybody has an idea how to prevent this happening. In an invoice file (related to a product file and line items file), the users use the keyboard short cut for sort a lot (apple S), sometimes by mistake they type the keyboard shortcut for duplicate (apple d) and an invoice gets inadvertantly duplicated, throught the autoenter function it gets a new invoice number and if nobody notices it, it gets then treated as a real invoice, when in reality it is only a duplicate. Is there a way to either disable the shortcut for duplicate, or to integrate a script which does not allow for the creation of a new record unless confirmed…

Is it possible to create a field that is only visible or editable when another field has a certain value? I.E. If a radio box field has the 1st item selected the field beneath would allow another radio box field to be editable otherwise it would be unavailable. Thanks, Rob

I am redesigning a database from FMP6 which will handle > 10,000 images. Currently, I am storing a reference to the images as a text string, which I then use AppleScript to manipulate (eg, 'Tell application "Finder" to select file <<FMP field>>'). I am thinking of using file references in FMP7, since they seem designed to solve my problem, but I am afraid of finding out some bad consequences of this decision later and having to undo a lot of work. my client is a slow typer and needs to make selections from longs lists in several pop-up lists. she wants the list to jump to 'Connor' so she presses 'c' then 'o', but the time she takes to do it means Filemaker jumps from Callaway (the first name that begins with C) to O'Brian (the first name begging with O). Using FMP4.1 How do I make this happen? I created two fmp DB's. db"A" contains forms/layouts called comments. db"B" contains the comments. When in a field in db"A" I want to type in many codes that represent the comments in db "B" example: I would type in A03 A44 C24 up to 60 of these codes. I would click a button that would replace the above codes (that are all in one field) with their related comments from db"B". Can someone point me in the right direction? I would like to have two fields which I have dubbed "Account" and "Date" and I would like to have the first identify the account responsible for the most recent change to the record and the second to identify the date (and possibly time) that the change was made. I'll readily admit to be a "newbie" to FileMaker and will readily accept "you dummy, its right there in the help" kind of responses. But I've not been successful, at least so far, at incorporating the desired behavior. Suggestions and such leading to a solution will be most appreated!

I have been using FM6..In my data base I have a Parent/child relationship Portal... It works well...When I hit Add it brings a new line (Vertical) in so I can type a note...it stores it on a nother data base (child)...but I can see it on the Parent.... I just purchased FM7...the parent /child relationship does not work very well..is there a new feature that I can use do something like what I had that works better???

I am looking for a real elegent way (in ver 7) to assign multiple tasks in a third table to a second table (the join file) so the people in the first table could be assign the same task. As each ask is added it will dissapear from the third table portal. The sample I made breaks when a person is selected and does not have any tasks assign to them (phil in the sample) , the selection portal relation ship breaks and goes blank. Hi folks, I'm modifying a customer's application in FMP 4.0 and am stuck on an idea that just doesn't seem to fly. Basically I start the application by clicking on file1.fm3, on one of it's forms there is a button that calls script1 to open file2.fm3, when file2.fm3 gets closed I would like script1(file1.fm3) to do a re-lookup based on a particular field and can't seem to get it to fly... Hi, I've always used a program called Nutshell/Ultrapls which Claris (1989)at one time produced etc. I tryed to up grade to FileMaker Pro and got Ver 3. But found that the Browse Mode would allow anyone to hit a key and change the data at will where as Nutshell/Ultrapls would provied a pop up warning advising you that you had to be in Modify Mode to do so. I could also then lock out that Mode if need be. Well I am trying out FileMaker Pro again and I still can't seem to figure out how or if I can do this. Thought maybe all the brain power on this site may have so help for me. Thanks, Ed...

I am using Filemaker Pro 6 on a G4 Mac OS9 that is used from remote computers. I have attached photos (as a reference) from a folder to various containers throughout the database. When I go through the database, all of the photos are visible from my G4, however the other two computers in the network do not display the pictures in the container fields. The containers show the link text, like house.jpg or whatever, so I know it has some knowledge of the pictures, but the photos do not show up. I have checked the box "Store Compatable Graphics" on all of the computers on the network and it doesn't make any difference. What am I doing wrong? Fil…

I have a database that is essentially an address rolodex of all of the Vendors & Venues I use (event planning company). I have created a somewhat strange join table in the same file that will hopefully allow me to add a list of preferred caterers for each venue. (The caterer records come from the same Vendors & Venues table, so I only have 2 tables but three table occurrences). I was excited to begin taking advantage of all the new features in FM7 so as soon as I recieved my copy I began to experiment. One of the first things I tried was to put fields inside a footer part when choosing view as a list and that seemed to work ok. Next I placed a portal with a scroll bar in the footer part and the portal data displayed fine until you tried to scroll the data to view the remaining related records. As you scrolled the screen either repeated the last record or was filled in with black. I'm trying to do a simple calc multiplying 2 fields. Qty X price Every time i set the price to a decimal say 2.5 it round the total up. 10 x 2 = 20 But 10 x 2.5 = 250 Last version i used was 5.5 and this worked fine... what is going on?

Respectfully request assistance/advice to see if its possible to create a field which will allow users to add comments and save them with user name and timestamp. Therefore, a field within a field if you will that allows you to capture a comment and then protect it. Then add another comment at a later time to that same field (or container) and then protect it. As such, creating a comments field that shows all of the comments that have been added over time. This is being used as a contact dbase and I would like to be able to add comments without overwriting or appending the old ones. Anyone know where the FileMaker username value is stored? Is it a consistent location or would it vary between installations, computer/network user names and between win2000 and winxp? All our users are using FMP5.5. I've had a dig about in the Documents and Settings folders, Local Settings and Application Data but found nothing. I'm therefore assuming it must use the registry but where abouts? Just thinking that I'll be able to write a script in windows, not filemaker, that can display a dialog, then edit the registry. Obviously the registry key would have to be the same for every installation. Any ideas?

This is surely possible... We have a contacts database with each company having a company id which is a serial number. Obviously when a record is deleted, there is a gap in the sequence of serial numbers like 0098, 0099, 0100, [deleted record], 0102, 0103... etc Is there a way to return a list of the serial numbers that aren't present?

I have made a report and would like to find out if there is a way to print only the fields that have been populated. The entire report is one page if filled in completely, but for many records in the found set, only 2 or 3 different fields may be populated. Instead of a found set resulting in a 60 page printout with many blanks, I would like to print out a 3 or 4 page report with only the blanks that have been filled. Does this make sense? Is it possible?

I am use to using an underscore '_' for all fields that are for programming but with FMP7 (or osX) all underscores are sorted to the top of the list instead of the bottom. This is a drag because when the client is exporting or adding a field to the layout they now see all my junk first. Has anyone found another way around this other then custom sort.

I'm currently planning a solution that will be used to create very complex reports, the reports are highly variable, and use a high number of tables and joins. The primary concern is 1)Flexibility, 2)Ease of Use (for the user, of course). I am new to FileMaker and am very impressed but am having a bit of trouble. The online application form for my writing workshop generates a tab-delimited text file, and I import that into an FM database. Then I manually add information in certain fields -- for example, whether the person has been accepted or put on the waiting list. And I correct mispellings and typos entered on the Web form by the applicant. All that works fine. I have a table that has a field call Constant which defined as a calculation with a calculation of "1". I have another field in the table called RecordID which is defined as a calculation with a calculation of "Get(RecordID)". When I import records into this table, unless the "Perform auto-enter options while importing" box is checked, these calculations do not occur so the fields are empty. This was not the case in FM6 and below. Any thoughts?

Is there anyway to have a graphic element on a layout which acts as a field, in that when a user clicks on a certain area of the graphic, it returns a different value. For example: A line on which the user indicates a point, and that returns a value ie. a visual analogue scale or A picture of the bowel where the user can mark the position where a tumour occured and that would return a value. I downloaded 7.0 demo and played with it until it timed out. I then purchased 7.0, put the disc in, doubled clicked the FMP icon, entered my name, company and the codes that came with it. But when I try to open it or any 7.0 file. I get the message that 7.0 has timed out, just like it did with the demo. I trashed the demo before installing the new one. What gives? Hi, After having a good look around I can't seem to find the answer to what seems a simple problem. I need to count the number of unique occurrences in a field (especially after performing a find for a report). For example, if the records show customer1 customer2 customer1 costumer2 I need filemaker to calculate that there are actually only two unique entries in this field. When I tab within a report that already has data, the cursor always appears in the field AFTER the last character. Is there a way so that when I tab from field to field, the cursor appears at the beginning of the field? Before the first character? I have 3 fields: PatientID, deliverydate, ethnicity Delivery date is for babies. I need to come up with a count, by ethnicity, of how many deliveries there were. Big problem. The guy who wrote this did not limit the input on ehtnicity so I have things like Cau, cau., cauc, and so on. So I can't just say "count how many are "CAUCASIAN"" What I need is for the count to be grouped by ethnicity and then output a report of each ethnic group and the number of deliveries sorted on ethnicity. I've tried numerous ways but I seem to just keep getting the total.

Is it possible while using a runtime solution created with Developer 7, to have access to the layout mode? And/Or just a few selected files in the R.T. to have access to the layout mode? I mainly want this so that our clients can move/change fields around the page for printing purposes. I never figured out a way to do this with V6, and after researching it, determined that it wasn't possible. My hopes concerning this may be rekindled with this new version. Heavenes - I have converted all the FM6 files to FM7 files. They are fairly simple structures right now so I have not found any problems yet. Computer: eMac OS: Panther 10.3 IP: Static I downloaded Business Tracker from Filemaker website, and enabled Instant Web Publishing. But when I go to my other PC and launched it from IE, all the buttons and functions are screwed up, It's unusable. Hi, im looking for a way to store the X,Y,Z Dimesions of serveral objects on one layout by dynamically creating fields (or rows of fields) as needed. E.g. i would have a row that has 3 input fields for myObject1 X1[...] Y1[...] Z1[...] All 3 fields are individual values. Hi All, I have an event database that contains school and student information. I'm trying to make a form where the data entry person inputs the school number and the school information will be populated via a relationship to the school database via the school number. The school database has links to other tables, in this case the region and management databases. The problem I'm running into is that after entering the school number on the events form only the fields that are from the school database are filled in. I have FileMaker Server 5.5, and FileMaker Pro Unlimited 5.5 running on a Mac OS 9.1. When I chose open remote from another computer running FileMaker Pro 6 it finds the database on the server. When I go to the Mac to open the remote database there is nothing listed. I thought this was funny because the database is sitting on the Mac but I can't even see the computer. What's the deal? A little feedback to share. I downloaded the FP7 Trial Version and ran into trouble converting my 6 related files, i.e. maintaining the relationships, dealing with the security system, etc. Upon further inquiry I found that the "migration" to FP7 will take some time to facilitate, as per the pdf on "planning your migration". My boss is already up in arms with the cost of upgrading each of our networked licenses whenever Filemaker comes up with a new version, and now he is outraged that the upgrade isn't streamlined enough for easy conversion. When trying to use the updater for upgrading developer 5.5v1 to 5.5v2, both in the classic environment as well as a native started OS 9, I get an error after the installation has just begun. Error message is 'Resource was modified'. Anybody a clue? My system is Panther, the current Filemaker (Developer) 5.5v1 is running smoothly there. The updater asks to go to classic. Using 10.2.8 and FM 7 upgrade to 5 and updating a 24 file solution. With FM5 one layout = one window and hiding made window management easy. With FM7 there can be multiple windows. Instead of using hours to find the best way to keep windows from multiplying like rabbits in springtime when going from one layout to the next, I decided to come to the forum. So far I discovered that I should make all my windows new at the opeing of a file, format to a "no access" layout, and hide them. I'm having problems with a database solution with online access locking up. I have a Win 2000 server hosting the database with FMP Server 5. I am using a second Win 2000 server running FMP Unlimited 5.5 connecting to the server and using FileMaker Web Companion. I only have one license for FMU and am holding out for FMP Advanced Server 7 so I can't setup a RAIC. I thought it might help if I use FMP WSC to allow IIS to publish the web pages and let FMPU and FMPS focus on the database operations. Will this help or am I wasting my time? I have a layout that is for invoices with several calculations. The layout is in categories, each category has a quantity and a dollar total based on that quantity and a grand total of the quantity of all the categories and all the dollar totals. I also have a layout that is a grand yearly total (summary) of all the invoices in the first layout. What I would like to do is find a way to create a new layout that separates the invoices by month so that I can get a total for each category AND the grand total for each month (We have to hand in monthly reports and I cannot figure out how to do this without creating a new database for each month). Hey kids, I've been playing around with a two-file system: one multi-table data file, and one interface file. Putting all scripts, layouts and value lists in the interface file is very easy; the final piece is the calc fields. While this is also easy enough, a problem arises when you want to show a calc field in a list or portal view. For example, when viewing a single invoice by way of the interface file, the total can be shown with a Sum ( lineItem::amount ) calc field. I've created a database using the company version of Pro6, and can't work out how to e-mail a record! I've been printing out copies of the records to send to people, and would like to be able to email a copy of the record, with all the field names and with the same layout. What happened to type-ahead selection of items in popup menus? I often used large popup menus for selecting values for fields in Filemaker 3 thru 6, where typing the first few letters of an item would scroll to that position in the list (given that they were displayed sorted on an indexed value). Does anyone know a way to capture the position of the cursor(insertion point) and/or the mouse pointer? It seems like we should be able to do this as in Layout mode, if you have the Object Size dialog showing, anytime you click gives you the coordinates of the mouse. I am using FileMaker 6 on windows xp and FileMaker Server 5.5 on a mac with OS 9.1. I can't find anything that tells me how to hook the two together. I have installed both products and I can remotely connect to the server but that doesn't get me anywhere. I don't know how to get my database from filemaker to filemaker server. I'm baaaaaaaaaaaack. Here is the situation. There is a date that needs to be entered under certain circumstances. The date has to be within the last year. That is no problem. HOWEVER, what has come up is people entering the date when they shouldn't and since there is a verification by calculation on the date, it won't allow them to delete the date. So I'm trying to figure out how to set the verification up for EITHER blank or within the last year. I saw that some people using a PC had this same problem, but has anyone had the same problem on the Mac? I am using TCP/IP to host a Instant Web Publishing database, have no corrupted fonts, but still when trying to launch FMP it goes through the whole process, even says "TCP/IP successfully loaded" but just sits for about 4-5 minutes before getting into a state where you can work with it. And it is when I open the FMP application (even when I am not opening a particular file in FMP.) Below is the closest solution I've seen for the PC, but not applicable to the Mac. I have a simple sales report. Each line item summarizes the sales activity of a given dealer. There are no Body parts in this report. The summaries are sorted by dealer, then by total sales -- best performer at the top. Viewing the sorted report in Preview mode, the report works perfectly, with one maddening flaw. When (and only when) there are more than 500 to 510 records in the found set being summarized, the TOP dealer on the report shows incorrect summary totals-- Switch to single-record Browse mode and the correct totals are displayed! Hi, folks! Under Mac OS X, FileMaker Pro 4.0 (and I imagine other "classic" versions) have layout problems. I read in the posts a couple different kinds, one of which is the dragging of fields/objects and their resulting duplication instead of relocation. It's as though you are OPTION-dragging them but you are not. To get around this, I have been moving objects in layouts with my cursor arrows, and although this works, it is an exercise in patience to say the least. Maybe someone can help with an up grade problem that I have with going from FM6 to FM7? In FM 6 a text field would recognize the text within the field and not slice the word at the end of the line (just as the text is done in this field). Whereas in FM 7 the same text in the same field is now sliced up at the end of the field (right margin) and the words are not respected as a word but not are just characters. I have a solution, written in Developer 7, that uses the new windowing scripts. On a Mac, the windowing is perfect, but on a PC, when a script places me in a new window, the window in the background looses it's maximization, and the Windows border shows. This makes the solution look awful. Has anyone seen this, and how can I work around this issue. I have tried the "Freeze Window" script step, but to no avail. Any thoughts would be warmly received. I have noticed a strange problem in FM7...one of many unfortunately. When I try to move any graphic (image, field, text) I can move it only a short distance then I get a black circle with a slash through it and the move doesn't work. I also have seen graphic elements change to diffeent layers after such a move...requiring the elements to have to be brought back to the foreground to be seen. Each time I drag an element, the screen flashes and frequently gray boxes appear. I've encountered a screen redraw problem when scrolling a long list of records. There are actually two. In the first, the screen does not always redraw correctly with the result that in list view one record appears overlapping a 2d appearance of the same record. This is somewhat sporadic, but it happens enough to be noticeable. The more serious problem is that when scrolling a long list of records (1,069 in this case), the further down one scrolls a blank white space begins to appear at the top of the window which gets progressively wider until by the time I scroll to record 1,050 the entire screen is white with no records at all showing. I am running a script that essentially looks like this: Go to Portal Row [select, Last] Set Field ["transactions::account_number", "12345"] All field types are text. What happens is that instead of "12345" being inserted into a new record in the "transactions" portal, a value from a completely different field ("company_number") is inserted instead. It dosn't matter if I change the "12345" to reference a field, it still sets the "account_number" field to the "company_number" value. I have to solve this today. How do I put a JPG into a container field?? I created a simple database... number, first name, last name, and picture (a container field). All fields are on a layout... viewed as a list... I've entered a few records... all the data went in just fine... the container fields are all blank. Here is a new one on me. I have a calulation field with a numeric result. It is a simple If statement that uses two indexed numeric fields within the same file. FM 5.5 will allow me to turn on indexing when I define the field. BUT, FM converts the indexing status to Do not store as soon as you quite define fields. I only noted this because when I would try to search this field it would have to index first. Open up define fields and there it is, an unstored calculation again. I have rebuilt the file several times. Again, no global field, no summary fields, no related fields and no unstored fields are used in the if statement. FM has no problems allowing me to set …

I'm trying to get the toolbars to show up on my layout. I started out at VIEW>>>TOOLBARS and all options are checked. Standard, Text Formating, Arrange & Tools options are all selected.
