Remote Container Fields

This one might be a reach... I'm using external & open storage on our FM server for containers, and we store all kinds of file types in various containers. If a user needs to edit the file, they have to export the file , edit as needed, reimport, and delete any previous versions. Would it be possible to Export Field Contents to the file path location it's being stored, causing FM to "overwrite" the file, and then proceed to open it automatically? My thought is that once the user makes the necessary edits and goes to save the document, the file path would already be pointing to the original location. Crazy idea? I am dragging images from a file on my computer into container fields. The files are stored on a server. All the images appear identical in Preview, Paint, Photoshop and any other way I open them. Some of the photos appear very small (thumbnails) in the containers. Others do not. Has anyone encountered this problem and is there an easy workaround? FWIW, I also took a screenshot of a sample image, exported (pasted) this screenshot into Photoshop and saved it as a new .jpg file. Once dragged into FileMaker, it *still* displays as a thumbnail. This leads me to believe the issue is with FM or the container, and not the image file. Thanks!

Just finished migrating existing container data (PDFs, Word Documents) from one table where the data was stored within the fmp12 file. I created a new table along with a new container field which was configured to use external storage so I would not inflate my main db file with all the container data. The import went fine all container data moved over successfully and is now being stored securely externally. On my layout I have the container field configured to show the PDF in an interactive viewer. All new document inserted into the container field preview correctly, however all old data which was imported only shows the icon. The only method I could do is to ex…

Using FM12 Advanced, I'm setting a Container field to "Store container data externally" in "Open" format. I have a relative directory defined & available, and a separate calculation in the "Open storage:" field beneath. I have a container field And also records a tif format file . As You know, Tif format can have so many pages in a file. But in container file, I can just see first page. I cant see other pages. İf it is possible me to see other pages. Example.zip

I'm testing a file I'm building where I have a button to import a picture into a field. On one hand, it works. That is, a picture ends up in the field. However, it is upside down. The photo was taken with a Canon camera. I also have a script to import a screenshot into a field, and that works without inverting. Both are in jpg format. Does anyone know why this happens? I hope someone can help me and clear things up. I have looked at other posts about this but still feel a bit befuddled. We recently converted to Filemaker 12 (we have FMS also). An Overview: We have a field called attachment, in the past the script Inserted a file reference to a PDF file. This database manages Service Tickets. When we email the ticket if there is a PDF in the Attachment field it goes along with it. When the Service Engineers scroll through their tickets they can double click on the Attachment Field and view the PDF if they wish. I have then been displaying these PDF's in a container field by using the plugin "insidescan". How can I do away with this plugin and still display the PDF in the container field? This is probably not the right place for this, but its the only place I've seen discussing container fields in FM12. I just took the plunge and upgraded from FM 11 advanced to FM 12 advanced, mostly because of the hype about the new container fields. I hoped for the functionality of simple drag and drop of PDFs both as the original files and as references, and to be able to navigate, copy, etc. inside the PDFs in non-referenced container fields. This seems to have been discussed but the solution was a bit vague I would like store some images in the default remote container folder and show the image via a calculation (container). What file path should I use? I've tried image:/RC_Data_FMS/subfolders/filename" image:/ipAddress/RC_Data_FMS/subfolders/filename" and using get(filepath) it does work if I VPN into the server and use the full address but that is no good for users. My database has become bogged down with a table and a layout for a PDF document library, which is part of a larger FM solution that I'm building. Each record in the PDF library takes 5 - 15 seconds to load, and editing layouts that reference this table are equally slow. Any interaction with PDFs becomes a large waste of time. I have a rather large table in my database that contains product photos in a container field that references a secure external data source. Recently my db has been made accessible to staff over Remote Desktop and I've had no issues. Today I logged in at home through my FMP client and random photos were replaced by "The File Cannot Be Found" text. However, if I log in to the db through a remote desktop session on the server back at the office all the photos display without a problem. What is causing this??? I'm baffled. I have been searching all over the internet for a solution. I am running FileMaker Pro Advanced 12.0v4 on Windows 7 Professional and can't find out why the "Insert PDF..." option is grayed out and not available. With the Data->Images selected only "Insert PDF..." is grayed out. If I select Data->Interactive content both "Insert PDF..." and "Insert Sound..." are grayed out. If I copy and paste the PDF into the container, I can't open and view it. The PDF software installed on the computer is Foxit Phantom Business PDF. Should that make a difference? Any suggestions? Hi I'm successfully using JS/PHP to drag and drop an image to a webserver via a webviewer during a product creation process. The goal is to construct a product, send to an online shop using its API, continue and finalise the product in FMP12. The problem is, when uploaded successfully, I then need to populate a container field on my local file with the same image so FileMaker can use it. Short of making my user drag and drop twice which is going to look silly (webviewer and container), does anyone know a graceful way to insert/embed an image to a container from a webserver? I dont seem to be able to alter the external storage location. The pull down menu is always just one uneditable location - Also this location uses the name of a previous database (which was copied and modified for the new use). I tried renaming the folder but that didn't help. Any thoughts? cheers

One of my clients has their Safari setup to use Preview.app for pdf viewing, yet when they view an FMP12 container field with a pdf in it, it shows the Acrobat interface... how can this be changed? At an official FileMaker event they said it would use the same helper app as your browser...

I have a database on server w/ remote containers. I have a development database with updates. I have an updater script that upgrades hosted database to the new database through scripted import of all records in all 60+ tables. When using remote container fields the links due not import properly, and the new database with imported records no longer has access to remote containers. The import process happens on a copy of pro advance on the server machine. Any thoughts? Using normal containers works fine, but my solution is picture intensive and the database is growing rapidly. Would love to make the updater work with remote containers. Thanks!

I'm using an FM12 Enhanced Container to store client docs. If I drop pdf or image files into the container they are interactive. That is to say I can scroll down the pages of a pdf in the container, even movies play in the container. However Word or Excel docs are only displayed as an icon and so I must export them before I am able to view them. I do have MS Word & Excel 2011 for Mac installed. My question is: Is this normal behaviour or is there something wrong with my setup? I have googled this issue but cannot confirm either way. Help would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'd like to be able to get the complete file path to files that have been Dragged & Dropped (not inserted) into container fields. None of the "Get" or "GetAs" functions seem to do this. Is there a function or work around to getting the complete file paths? The basic concept is for the end user to drag & drop files into a container field, with calculations/scripts obtaining the complete path, allowing renaming via AppleScript and other manipulations. Any ideas? If the file is "Inserted" this is trivial, but much more time consuming for the end user since they have to navigate to it. This is in FM12 Advanced.

Hi everyone I'm going to try my question within this forum. I'm at a loss and need some help. I'm trying to transfer my database to another computer. The db contains secure, external containers, which are contained in different folders depending on the table they're in. I am trying to Save As Copy > Self Contained, however it isn't sucking in the container data. FM is still trying to reference an external source within the new "self-contained" file. I've also tried just moving the entire folder the database and container files are contained in and manually reassigning the folders. Hello, I have created a database which has questions for trainees. Some of the questions have photos and videos. I have created number of container fields for the same. The database is currently sitting on a server that runs Filemaker server 12. I have filemaker 12 pro advanced on my computer. The problem that I am facing is how to make certain videos go to the server. The photos work fine in container field and they are embedded into the database. Previously when I used to insert quicktime or .mov files into the container field, the videos were staying on my computer and were not accessible from other computers. One of our users today approached me about adding an add file button to our layout, because she didn't like to use drag and drop. I told her she should be able to right click and choose Select Picture to get the functionality she wanted. She told me right clicking only gives her cut, copy and paste. I made an account with her privilege set, and confirmed that it does indeed not include the other right click menu options, like my full account does. Problem is, I had no idea this was a thing, or how to approach fixing it? Where in the world is there a setting I can change to give the more exhaustive right click menu options to my users?

I guess I just don't understand containers. I created a container field and placed a picture in it. When viewed the picture shows up in all the records for that file. What did i forget to make the picture only related to that one record?? TIA

Hi, it's probably very easy, but I don't know how to access the data inside of a container field. I have a script that inserts a small text file (insert, no reference) into a container and all I can see is a file icon with the filename. When I use «GetAsText(ContainerField)», I only get the filename. But how can I access the data inside of this container/file? I need to perform a couple of text manipulations and store the results in another field of this record. Thanks so much for any help. Gary

I have a solution where I have placed ALL container field referenced .pdf's into one folder (remember when we used to call them directories?) when I should have used subfolders for each year, i.e., 2011, 2012, 2013, etc. Is there an "easy" way to change the file paths for each year's pdf files? Obviously I can move them in Windows, but how do I change their paths in FM11 Pro Advanced? Thanks, Kevin

Hi all, I'm wondering what the best way to store images in a container field is if I would like to do the following. - Have the images be stored outside of the database - be able to access the images with and iPad or iPhone I'm setting up a wordpress to ecommerce store that will grab images from the filemaker records and post them to the WP server. I have a student database. Each student has a unique student Id. I have a drive full of student pictures - each picture is named <student_id>.jpg. I have created a container field which stores the container data externally. Is there any way I can dump the student pictures into the relevant folder determined by the container field, and automatically update the container field so that it looks for the equivalent <student_id>.jpg. eg UPDATE tblStudents SET PHOTO = 'Databases/Students/Photos/<Student_id>.jpg. Sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum but I didn't find one specific for container fields. The problem I´m having is, all pictures I save to FMP 12 containers fields show as landscape. This is what I do: - I take some pictures with my iPhone, some landscape, some portrait - I open image capture, drag the pictures to my desktop - I drag them from the desktop to a FM container field - They all appear as landscape How come the ones that show as portrait (even in the desktop) they show as landscape in FM? It seems like there is no difference when it comes to selecting the .pdf file to be inserted into my container fields whether I select "Picture" or "File" or "PDF" other than a cosmetic feel if you will .. the visual image one sees. I've tried all three and all three when opened, opens the pdf into my Preview App for viewing exactly the same. Hello, I have a solution that is using the external container option in FM12. I chose to use Secure. I have encountered an error that is causing the program to rash. After releasing a new version to the solution, it imports all of the user data from the previous version. All data is copied just fine and the Secure data folder from the container is also copied over into the program directory of the database. Whenever I try to access one of the records that contains data from from the container, the program crashes. I am using FM12 on a Mac. I am also attaching the error log below in a text file.
