    first...thanks to liveoak back a few posts ago. i worked your sorting technique into my solution and it works wonderfully, and it added some neat flexibility into it i never even thought about before! ok, on with the new question i have a parent file with my data in it, and a "queue" file that has the portal pulling live jobs out of the parent file. the queue file will exsist running on several different computers, each computer with its own copy. occasionally, i need each copy of the queues to run an "update" script based on some changing values in the parent file. i created a button labeled "refresh" and stuck it in a little one row portal which i make appear or dis…

    I am a novice so please bear with me. We have a file called "Contacts" and a file called "Quote Log". In the "Contacts" file is a field called, "Quote No.". This field "Quote No." has entries such as 9900, 8901, 7500. I have created a relation in the "Quote Log" file to the "Contacts" file and used the quote no field as a link.     I have two data tables that are each storing relation information into a third table. The two data tables have ID and also an additional field with information of the type of data the table is storing. Well, via a portal, the user gets to store some other data and what I want to do, is store in the relation table, the ID, and this other table identification field along with the other information that the relation table is designed to store. The problem is that I am only able to store one of the two fields and not both. I need both because the combination of the two fields is the unique key.     Is their an easy way to insert a new record in a portal inbetween existing records? I have a layout with a portal that shows 22 rows and the users want to be able to insert a blank row in the middle of existing records in the portal.     I have a jobs database with a portal of a line items database. Each line will have a code ID, description, price and quantity field, that's not problem. What I would also like to have is a bill of materials for each line item that I can put toegther when creating each line item. It seems like this may be able to be done by using a portal of materials inside the line items portal, but it doesn't seem to work. Is this the right approach?     2 db's, Contacts.fp5 and Interests.fp5 - related 1-M by Contact ID. I want find all contacts that have both sailing AND skiing as there interests. If i do multiple find requests from either db, I get sailing OR skiing. Is there a way I can use boolean in a portal field in a find request? Cheers Hal.

    I am a relatively novice user, have never posted a question but have a question whcih I could not find an answer to using the search I have a portal that matches last names from a source database when I type in a last name in new database. I have created a button that executes a script that inputs the relevant information from the source into various fields in the new database. My question is how can I easily update the source database when some of these fields are modified (e.g. the address, email or phone number changes)?     I have a solution with a "grid" made up of 6 portals (one each for grades K through 5) Each row holds the score for a particular test. This works great. (The grid is in a Reports file; the portals show data from a Tests file.) The next request from my end user...she wants to have it calculate the difference between scores of the same test from year to year. I have a portal in a customer database that is showing records from a contacts database. I want to be able to create new contacts from the customer database. So far this is the easy part. I has reached a file size of 2 gygabites and more than 6000 records. There are no way to increasing this size? Which are the limits on the size of a file? The record isn't being modified by another user and according to what I found in the forum it has something to do with portals. What is exactly happening? How do you solve this problem? My problem is that I need to print information from two portals in one report: I have a file called Docket. The Financial Summary report in Docket has one portal that lists all of the invoices and their amounts for a project, from the file Invoice. It also has a second portal that lists all of the purchase orders and their amounts for that project, from the file PO.     I have successfully laid out a statement using a portal to list all of the client's outstanding invoices. The portal row contains: Invoice date, Invoice Number, Job description and Invoice amount. I have one database which is dedicated to certain assets. It contains two fields called Asset_Number, Asset_Name that I am concerned with.     I have a portal. The portal has many rows. Everything works fine until I try to print or preview. When I print or preview, certain portal rows drift down so that I can only see half of the text in the portal row, or none of it at all (it drifts below the visible box). I would like to have the "invoice number" from the invoice database automatically appear in the "invoice number" field in my production database. It seems that a portal would be the most appropriate way to do this but I can't make it work (I have never made a portal before).     I have been operating a FMP 4 database for several years (updating from earlier, flat-file versions, etc.) to run a translating business. But I don't know much about designing databases. My system keeps good track of Jobs (when they come in, go out, how much to charge, which translator/s did the work, how much each bills me, etc.) as well as, through relationships, using and accessing client details, translator info, etc. Each job also displays the corresponding invoice number once it has been invoiced.     Here's my situation: I have 2 files, Main.fp5 and contacts.fp5. Main.fp5 is a "jump-point" file to all other files. In the contacts layout in Main.fp5 I would like to create a portal that displays all contacts for our company. Clicking on on a contact would open the contacts.fp5 file. I cannot figure out what kind of relationship to setup here. Obviously I need some sort of key field that is part of every new contact file so that the contact will display in the portal.     I have a solution tracking student test scores. There is a Tests file which contains a record for every test a student takes and a Reports file which displays whatever info through portals. I have a grid created comprised of 6 portals (K, 1st, 2nd, 3rd...) keyed on a student id. When a student has taken every test in a given year it works great. Two databases -- Main and Affiliates I want to create a portal in the Affiliates DB so that I can type in a "Domain Name" and have it fill in the "Account Status" field and the "Start Date" field from the Main DB. I have a three line self-relational portal and have dropped a button in the portal to open a pdf file relevant to the portal record on that line. The button works perfectly. I have a main database with one layout which includes a text field (Equipment) and 2 portals (one directly on top of the other.) I use one portal with a relationship between the main database (using the Equipment field) and a second database (Generators). I then set the second portal to use a relationship again using the Equipment field to a third database (Golf Carts). You make a job and give it a report title, and in the process of making that job you make tests to be carried out in that job. You finalise that job, then you invoice it.     I want to display Job Numbers with their Test price totals in a portal on an Invoice file. An Invoice can have many Job Numbers and a Job Number can have many Tests. So far I can get it to show the Job Numbers (duplicated as many times as there are Tests for that Job Number) and the Price for each test listed beside it. How do I make it list the Job Number only once, and the total for all the Tests in that Job beside it?

    This is often a sign that you have set up an auto-enter or lookup in the related file, based on information that can’t be available until after the record has been created, or a bad reverse relationship will generate the same message. You need to go through both files, check what you have changed recently! Did the relationship work before? Rigsby

    I have 2 databases. One db contains a portal to records in the other database. Is there any way I can add records straight in the portal instead of having to go to the other db to create records? In other words I need a portal that allows you to add records as well besides just displaying and updating records from the other db. Would I have to write scripts? The portal works through a relationship of a similar name to a file called "Items." The "Items" file manages individual products from manufacture until they arrive in the customers hands (and beyond as a reference archive). Items are grouped and managed from the "Orders" file. Through the orders layout, the user can add and remove items from the "Items" file. Here's my problem: quantity of identical items.     I'm trying to create a grid-type layout with Grade (K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) across the top and 16 different tests students take down the side. I want to be able to enter a Student_ID and display that student's test results throughout the grid. Each student has a unique ID, and each grade also. I have a calc. field which combines the two and 6 relationships based on these fields. I have 6 portals based on the relationships, all sitting side-by-side, displaying the test score. What I would like to do and havn't been able to so far is . To display the contracts in portal 1 as is , however. Only when a particular contract is highlighted within portal 1, I want to have FM sort which 'notes and updated" belong to that contract and only display them then.     I know that you specify sort order in the relationship setup of the database but I have a specific problem, that may mean that I do not or can not use a portal. I have created a media database of several video files, with thumbnails in the records for visual identification. I have now created another database to create playlists of the media files. I need to be able to display certain media files through a portal (which I have completed using a repeating playlist ID field in the media database). BUT I need to be able to re-order the displayed order of the media files in the database. Anyone got any bright ideas? Joel

    I have Elements listed in a portal on a layout in my Projects file. I want to force the users to use a button I have created called "Create New Element". It is attached to an extremely important script. The users are in the habit with this and other databases of simply going to the last row in a portal and typing to create the related records. Is there any way to hide this row, or lock it, or attach an error message or... something? I even put a large red note on the layout.   74. Hi people... Here's the scope. I have this little script that goes loops through the portal rows adding up a field to make a total for another field outside the portal. The thing is though that when the loop goes down to the X amount of rows viewable on portal. (as in, the viewable amount of rows in a portal), the script bombs into a uncontrollable loop.     Howdy all - I'm in what I hope is the final stage of a database for a small foundation. The database keeps track of donors and donations/purchases (they also have some merchandise). So now I have the task of setting up the invoices part of the database. Currently the donations entry process is scripted to an "Entry" db that only allows these users to see so much and helps to avoid duplicate entries by first finding existing donors, etc. I'd like to keep the rest of the process (entering the donations, etc.) within the same "Entry" database if possible, with the actual databases just being related to it.     Two databases. TASKS & DATES. Tasks uses a portal showing multiple days that the selected task is occuring on. Dates uses a portal showing multiple tasks that occur on that date. A Many to Many, right? Or is there a way to do this without a joining table? The problem is this. I need to create all the tasks in tasks. Then I need to create all the dates in dates.     I have two protals Portal 1 and portal 2 linked to a file. In portal 1 I have the values a, b, c, d and in portal 2 I have the values 1, 2, 3, 4 I need to combine these portals in another file so that I will have a 1, b 1, c 1, d 1, a 2, b 2, c 2, d 2,..... I have two DBs; Tasks and Customers which works fine but I'm having problems with the multikey filtering... I downloaded SmartRanges from www.fmfiles.com and it's a great technique file but I just can't get it to work in my solution.     I'm creating an invoicing DB and have our and clients basic info in the title header and the actual bank transfer template in the title footer. The body only has a portal to "line items". I've set the portal to slide/reduce which works okay. The portal is 50 rows so that all the possible products fit to the invoice. I've set it up so that if all the portal rows don't fit in the body it continues on another page (in preview mode) this works fine if I only have one record in the whole DB. If I have more records those portals also print in the preview mode, why? I can prevent this ******* thing by omitting the current record and viewing omitted (although FM still prints the …

    I have an interfacing challenge. I would like to produce a layout (or series of layouts) that give the ability to expand several portals to fit their contents. e.g. Where a list of orders for a particular job contains four orders, when you click on the header (button) the header expands to show the four orders. In other words I need to be able to take the number of records for the portal and use it to adjust the size of the portal. Anyone out there with any ideas?

    If you see the first field repeated in a portal it is a sign that there is a mismatch between the portal relationship and the field relationship. Since you copied the portal from a previous layout, check the field definitions to make sure they use the same relationship as the portal. One other thing: sort order of portals is set in the relationship definition options. You can't have two portals with the same relatinship sort two ways. I suggest you duplicate your original relationship, set its sort according to your second user, and use that relationship for your second user's layout, portal and fields.

  98. In my clients database i have a portal to a Notes database. When I open the Contacts database on my Mac, I see in the Window menu the Notes database in parentheses as hidden. This is fine, but in a Windows environment, the database shows up, although minimized. Is this normal behavior? I prefer my user not see this Notes database, or have access to it at all except through the portal.

    I have a customers DB and a tasks DB which are related (each customer has a unique ID). I've created layouts for past tasks and future tasks. I have portals to "tasks DB" in both layouts and I want to filter the portal to show "*today" tasks in the other layout and "<today" in the other. Can I use "*" or "<" operators to filter portals? What do I need to filter my portal as described above?

    I have a list of projects which are displayed via a portal. The portal displays only the entries speficied by a Global field which contains the project managers name. Once a project is completed I require to hide the entry from the portal. Otherwise my users have to go through an ever growing list. I have setup a script which changes the field "assignedto" which is the user name to become "Completed" thus making it disappear from the protal. However when I script this step It seems as if the script will only work if the record I wish to change is the top most record in the portal. Assitance requried please.
