I have data base with unique ID numbers for every record in the data-base. Data-base1 has 920,000 records. data-base 2 has 6,000 records. All of the records in databse 2 have matching IDs with Database 1. (In fact all of the IDs in database2 came from Data-base1, which were sent out to get some new data added to them). Now, when I attempt to import the new data added to the 6,000 records in data-base2 into database1, some of the records are droped. for example: A136756 is a common ID between both data bases. However, when importing the new data into database1, Filemaker fails to import from this ID. I am loosing about 700 records. I have the two…

Hiya guys, Is it possible to perform a script with the "Execute SQL" command to update records in another database (such as Oracle) from a client machine but use the ODBC drivers and Data Sources from the server?? The reason I ask is in the past when I want users to perform an "Execute SQL" script I have to set up ODBC drivers and Data sources for each machine that will use the script. It would be easier for me if this script was ran server-side where the ODBC Drivers and Data Sources would only need to be set up once. But still make it so that users could run the script from thier own client machine. Does this even make sense and is this even possi…

In my solution one of my tables has about 300 fields, with a fair few of them being unstored calculations. To export this table takes a few minuntes for only a couple of hundred of records. One the other hand another table has about 100 fields, almost no unstored calc fields and to export this yields about 5 times the speed. Is exporting speed, field dependent, layout dependent, Filemaker version, or what? I've read the posts and there seem to be no clear answers. Does anyone have a definitive list of what can be done in Filemaker to obtain maximum speed for exporting records? (Please, no joke replies about buying a supercomputer – I need answers not bad wit). …

Hi! I have a huge problem with importing data back to FM database. Importing to one table is simple but how to import related data to second database with same relationships. I have included two example files PeoplePets1 and PeoplePets2 ( second contains one record less ) and I created XML export ( I don't know which format is best for exporting ) with related data included. But how can I import related data to second database file and that relationships stay the same? I don't have any idea... Problem is when I would have to make changes to database and distribute new solution to customers. In Developer's Guide is said that you must create new solution, export data…

Hey people! I'll trade my kingdom (such as it is) for an easy-to-use Filemaker Pro 8.0/8.5 to address book sync. I'm using OS 10.4.6. I've searched the forum without any satisfying results. I can't be the only one that needs this handy feature/utility. Somebody out there ought to be able to come up with this handy utility. All you developers that just finished your big conference get to work on this simple yet important item, please. Before someone recommends Address Exchange, allow me to say that that software hasn't been updated to be compatible with Tiger. Address Book Importer is only a partial solution and leaves me unsatisfied. So...there's opportunity here for…

I have a database with parent and child records. It works great. However, if I make a copy of that file, remove all the records and then import the parent and child records from the original file into the blank copy, the relationships do not work unless I close and reopen the file. Anyone know why this might happen? :

In the final runtime version of my solution, both for XP and Mac OS, the user can click a button to bring up a standard file dialog where he is supposed to select an XML-file he has received by e-mail. That XML-file will then be imported. (The format (fields to match etc) of the XML file is already known to me.) The current solution has an 'Import Records' step with 'Perform without dialog'; the 'Specify data source' is NOT checked, but the 'Specify import order' is of course enabled and properly setup while I had an XML test file selected. The 'import order' is saved with the script step, even when I make sure 'Specify data source' is NOT checked. The curr…

My database has anywhere between 45,000 records and 350,000 records( it changes every day). I need to be able to export 2000 records at a time until all the records have been exported so the way I see is: 58 exports of 2000 records would work for a record set of 116,000 This is going to take me a long to in the scriptmaker to type. Is there anyone out there who knows a faster way of doing this. I took a screen shot of code from script maker so you could see my logic, by the way count1 is just get record count divided by 2000. Please help me! Picture_6.pdf

Hi I'm exploring the integration of GIS mapping software with a Filemaker solution for a company related to health services. They want to be able to diaplay sites like hospitals etc on a map of the UK. We have postcode data so I'm anticipating the need to export it into another bit of software: unless you know different. 1. Do you know of any good GIS mapping software? 2. What's the best way of integrating it with Filemaker? Best John

I have built a MySQL booking system to be used online by about 20 users all over Australia. Users can go online and see a calendar of their bookings. The problem with these systems is always this: Users take some bookings online from the public - but others over the phone. So they keep two sets of books. There are double-bookings, etc. I've considered using AJAX to send users an Ical format calendar to synchronise with outlook. But I'd much rather send all the users their own desktop filemaker executables which would synchronise/dump MySql Data. That way I can get some compliance from the users who may use Macs or who will not pay for a full Filemaker licenc…

Hey I have a solution that interacts with other programs using an XML export. Currently, I have FMP create my file in a global and then using the "Export Field Contents" the user saves the file. My problem is Filemaker saves the file in Unicode, but my clients antiquated other system only accepts ANSI characters. How do I tell Filemaker to save the file as ANSI? The work around, is to have the client check off the 'automatically open file' checkbox, the file opens in WordPad, then they use 'save as' to save as ANSI instead of Unicode. Anyone know a more eligant solution? TIA Jerry

I've got a large database that we've routinely exported to .xls format. The database opens and works fine in Excel 2000, however in Excel 2003, certain fields are replaced with question marks, everything else is the same. Everyone of the fields that has this issue uses the List() function in FM pro to get related data into one Excel row. Does anyone know what causes the difference?

I have a little problem: I have a Search Layout I use for exporting into Excel. There are two tables Category and Contacts. Category ID is the foreign key in Contacts. If I save records via the menu command Save records as Excel - it works fine, all data from fields Category and Contact name populate all the Excell cells on the spread sheet for all the records. However, when I do a scripted button to export Category and Name, the fields do get exported, but Category shows only grouped data - Names are fine - all the cells are populated, but not Category which I would like to see populated next to the names. I have been searching long and hard for the best solution at pulling data from the web and into Filemaker Pro 8.5. In my student management database, I keep two identical tables. One for active records, one for an "archive". The archive is used to semi-permanently store data for a student that has moved, graduated, etc and the informaion needs to be kept, but kept seperately. Fairly frequently one of these students is needed back in the main table. Over the years I have accomplished this several ways. Currently this is what I am doing: "Users" can mark a student that needs to be archived by clicking a button that sets a match field. That student(s) then shows up in a portal and an "admin" can click a button to archive the student. What happens when the button is clicke…

Surely I've missed something. It can't be this hard! I'm trying to construct what I thought would be the very simplest way to archive the contents of an FMP file -- and be able to restore those contents at a later time. I've designated the .fp7 file type on the export -- and by all outward indications, FMP produces the file (records.fp7) properly. The import specifies the exact same table and Matching Names. But, invariably, the items are scrambled when the import executes. Even when I go into manual mode (activate dialog), none of the "Arrange By:" settings will cause the fields to align. I've had to resort to using Custom Input Order in every in…

We currently have a large project that we are working on for transfering a great deal of audio information from older sources to digital media. Part of the project is creating a kiosk station which will allow people to listen to any of the music we are transferring. For this part we will be importing about 800 CDs into a compressed format. We will be using iTunes as the backend and I would love to be able to edit the ID3 tags straight from FileMaker since we already have all the titles from the CDs in a database. These aren't CDs that would come up under GraceNote. I'm not an expert with Applescripts, but I'm thinking we will be able to name the CD to its corresponding CD…

I've got a picture database of University research slides that I'm putting into a database. The raw images are about 5 megs each and I've put them on their own seperate database. I am quite new to FMP and to everyone else this is probably a stupid question but; I have created some new layouts and scripts for a client in FMP6 and have come to the end of the development work and now want to update their system with these new features. But having never done this before I am not sure how to do it. If I copy the databases back onto their server won't it overwrite all of the database entries that have been made since I took a copy and completed the work? Hello all, I apologize if this posting appears in the wrong section--please point me in the right direction if this is the case. Ideally, this will enable me to look at a map displaying all the venues that fit my criteria and plan routings accordingly. An associate of mine has done something similar on a PC (e…

I have done a bulk import of a text file to a Filemaker Pro 5 database (about 400 records). I am now running into a couple of problems manipulating the data. An important body of text has gone into a "comments" field in every record, and in this comments I field I included various searchable codes so that I could find the imported data records and do some processing on them in FM Pro. The text in the comments field appears perfectly, but when I search for codes and simple words that I can see in the comments field, FileMaker returns "text not found". Hi everyone, I have a FM database with around 90,000 entries. I want to add a new field and then combine it with another. Suppose I have a file set to use yyyy-mm-dd as the date format. I export the records as XML (fmpxmlresult, no style sheet). The resulting XML document contains: ... ... 2006-07-04 ... But when the document is imported into another file on another system, Filemaker ignores the declared date format, and imports the date data as invalid dates. Actually, my REAL problem is importing from an external XML source, using a style sheet. The style sheet presents the XML data "as if" it came from another Filemaker file. I am not too familiar with FM 5. I need to create a script to import from an Excel file. I will need to match the fields, and then run this script manually every month, but without having to manually match the fields each time. I created the Import script, checked Restore, and matched the fields. But when i tried to run the script again, FM did not remember my field matching. Did i miss something?

I am scripting an import from fp5 data file. If a user has not converted the file yet, one would expect the error to be 816...no problem....except, when I capture it, the default filemaker message still appears. I have attached a simple example, just try importing a fp5 file and see what happens. What is really strange is that I used a script variable to save the error and it does show up in a dialog after the ignored error capture. Any ideas? I have looked on the boards but have not found much help yet. Thanks! Bug.zip

Hi I would like to know if there is a way of checking to see if a file exists when using the Save Records as PDF script step. I am deriving the file name based on record attributes, but want to prompt the user to over write if exists. I will do with an AppleScript if necessary, but would prefer to do with FM. Thanks halski

I am having difficulties explaining this one. my hopes are that some one in this forum has seen this before. I appreciate any guidance offered. I have created a script that creates .txt files from my FM database. each record is named after the record number xxxxxxx.txt . A little html scripting is then added for my import to my ecommerce web site. the text files look great but when the *.txt files are loaded on to the web, the mysterious "ÿþ" characters appear before my text. I have been trouble shooting this problem now for several weeks. with no success. below is an example of my FM created text file: (this is exactly what FM makes for me) ##############…

I have a FMP database that I have created, I also have an Access file that I have to keep track of EMS CAD calls. The FMP database is the main backup for this access file. I setup and ODBC connection to the access file from FMP, and was able to import the data, but I need to set it up to that when I import data, it only gets the new data and not the same older data over and over again. This is leading to duplicating in the FMP database. Thanks

Is there an easy way to paste text from a word document...but keep the formatting/pictures, etc. I've tried changing it to a container field and inserting object and file, and all else and none of that works too well.

I am trying to use the "Export Field Contents" script step, but when I output a file using this step I get one that is not encoded correctly. (To be specific, my web browser can't execute it properly). I've diagnosed the problem to the file not being encoded correctly-- when I re-save the file as Unix encoded UTF-8, it executes fine. Does anyone know of a way in FileMaker I can save a file as UTF-8?

Has anyone experienced XML that has multiple "data" lines for each "col"? How do you get the XSL to take that into consideration? For example: Client 1 CLIE1 Jim Bob Billy Sue Client 2 CLIE2 Billy Ray Susie Q I can get the XSL to display Jim Bob, but skips Billy Sue and proceeds to the next client, Client 2 and displays Billy Ray, but not Susie Q. Anyone else have this problem? What was your work-around?

Issue: In FM6 I exported data to an HTML table and uploaded to web server, which parses data into an SQL database. In FM8, works fine too, except that diacritics are suddenly encoded in a different way. The format I was getting from FM6 was very handy because diacritics were encoded for example as follows ñ = soft n which required no translation to load in a web page cleanly on pretty much any browser. Now in FM8 I've tried Windows ANSI, Macintosh, Western European, and none give me the encodings for diacritics that FM6 provided in its HTML export. Instead I get codes like 226 often two in a row (presumably unicode control characters, but I'm not well versed in t…

Hi I'm scripting an export for a system where several users will all be exporting their files to a central system. Rather than setting up all the databases individually, I want the script to say - export to a file and call it "Parish acronym" (field) plus "xmlexport" (real text). i.e. when all the files reach the other end they will be tagged with their own acronym. Is there a way to do that and still have the export run automatically with no dialog box? Rosie.

Whats the best way to move a record into a specific worksheet in a specific excel file? Currently, I'm exporting to a new .xls, copying the row, and then pasting it to the desired excel file and worksheet. Is there a better way? I'm beginning a project and this would be a huge help.

Hi Folks, I hope somebody may be able to offer some suggestions on a weird problem I am having. I am doing an import of a 5000 row excel spreadsheet into FM8 and are importing based on matching rows based on one key field. The import seems to work fine, but the resulting data in FM shows some weird symbols in the first field of the row on records that aren't supposed to have anything in that field, but these records do match the key field. Symbols such as #N/A, and random characters seem to appear. I am doing other imports and they work fine. It only seems to be when I am doing an import that uses the matching function. I have even tried clearing these fields i…

I am trying to create a method to import text from email orders we receive into Filemaker. Below is an example of the email text we receive. I would like to capture everything right of the ":" to a related field in Filemaker. I would like to let the user cut and paste the text from the email into a text box in Filemaker. The user would then hit an 'review data' button to move the data to related fields so they can double check the accuracy. Once they confirm the accuracy, they could then hit an Export button to move the data into the Filemaker Orders Database. I've got a script that deletes a set of records from a table, then imports a new set of records from an external data file. The imported data values include foreign keys to a related table. The layout from which the import is being executed displays a number of fields from the foreign record. After import, the layout shows blanks for the related fields, despite the fact that the related record DOES have values in these fields. If I close FileMaker, then reopen FileMaker and return to the same record, THEN the foreign field values are displayed as expected. I expected that the related fields would be resolved IMMEDIATELY when a new record is imported, bu…

Hi all- I have built a relational database of about 20 tables, and am looking to figure out a way to archive records that represent "old jobs"; that is, completed, paid in full, and not to be seen again (unless i decide i need to re-import them). Essentially, I would like to be able to select a client whom i want to remove from my database. The script will then locate every record related to that client (every job, every order made to outside vendors, every invoice element, every invoice, etc), export that data into another file, then delete it from my current database. I realize this is a broad topic and there are probably several ways to approach this. …

Hi, I am importing records using a script from Contacts.fp5 to Contacts Clone.fp5 over the network based on the last modified time every hour. Duplication of records happens and the more than one record is created in Contacts Clone.fp5 for Eg., Record ID12345 update time 14:00:00 Record ID12345 update time 14:30:00 I have checked the Import Action as Update matching records in current found set and Add remaining records. I am not sure even then why is the duplication happening. I would appreciate help.

Hi, This may be very simple. I would like to set up an Export where the Export is XML File using an XSL style sheet. I want the user to be able to select the style sheet from a directory everything else I will automate. I figured I could set it to reference a variable but I’m having trouble setting up the part of selecting the path file name to insert into the variable. Thank you in advance for reading this and any assistance.

I have to do a daily import of 1 to maybe as many as 50 dbf files that contain 1 to X records (usually under 5). Preferably I would like to have the dbf files saved to a directory and imported in one import step or at least scripted without the need for repeated input from the user. For now I have created a loop script that is set to import. Once a file is imported I drag the imported file to a "completed" folder and then double click the next file to import.... rinse and repeat. The import folder option doesn't work because the files are not .txt files. Is there any way to do multiple imports without user intervention?

Hi everyone, I've just started a new job in an office with a copy of FM6 on Windows 2000. They want me to build a client database that includes a function to take a client survey that's filled out in MS Word and import the answers into FM. Is this possible? I can't picture how it would work, other than possibly converting the questions and answers into an Excel format and importing that - but even that seems redundantly difficult. Is this a situation where cut and paste really is the best way? Thanks so much!

Hi, I thought this would be simple, but I guess not. I have a field that I have used to generate emails from my FileMaker Pro 6 database. This field is formatted just fine, by using codes like & "¶" & "¶" & for returns and so on. I can't make things bold or underlined for email. Since these tags in email are just HTML tags, I thought I could add something like & "" and finally & "" at the end of a line I wanted bold, but it doesn't show up as bold text in the email client. (The raw tags are just shown instead.) I'm using Eudora 6.2.1 for Mac OS X, and I've sent a test email to myself to see if maybe the email client will make it ap…

Is it possible to alter the text encoding of a field or record export? I am trying to export the contents of a text field, for use in another application. Currently the text encoding is coming out as Unicode (UTF-16), but I need it to be either: UTF-8, Western (Mac OS Roman) or Western (Windows Latin 1). I can change the encoding in Text Edit and I assume write an AppleScript to do this automatically, but I'd prefer to have it all done within Filemaker if possible. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Hello! Would like your thoughts on how to solve this problem -> Problem: Export data from 7 tables to 1 file and then import data from that 1 file to the 7 tables in a different runtime solution My solution: Example 1 a) Create a file with the 7 tables and include it with the runtime (file A) : export data from the 7 tables to separate fp7 files c) create a copy of "file A" d) open the copy from within the runtime, then importing the data from the 7 files to "file Acopy" d) at last closing down "file Acopy" and returning to the main file in the runtime solution (of cource all this done with a script) Example 2 a) same as above …

To all that have the know how to implement what seems logically like an easy to solve problem (considering the power of this amazing program), I have a directory of text files (~600 of them) that were typed by my dad's secretary about 10 years ago that contain, in each file, one contact's information for an address book. Unfortunately (for me), the files are in no delimited format with which I could use a standard import to gather the data into the necessary component fields. I have included a zipfile containing a sample of the variations of the sourcefiles that I need to parse. I tried to choose the most diverse ones so that the algorithm suggested migh…

Hi, I am looking at creating a database that is based on images but the thing is i need a way of getting multiple images into the one record. I would really appreciate it if anyone can help me find a solution to this. Say i have 100 folders and within the folders are 20 or so images but i am only wanting to create 100 records. Is there a way i could import multiple images say into a container field or something as im not advanced with FMP. I know i could go and click import image with every image within the folders but i would be here forever and i just would assume there is a way around this. Again any help would be much appreciated, thankyou.

Hi, I am updating a Filemaker Pro database file version 5 i think (.fp5) I was working at the office on a mac in filemaker pro version 6v.4 to make changes to the current database. The program(database) is a label system which you enter some data in some text boxes, and then you select from a list of buttons on the side to decide what type of label you want the data to go on which type of label. i.e. a cd label, a dat label, a cassette label, etc. It works pretty well, (when it works). My job was to add a new style of label sheet to the list of labels. So that consisted of measuring out the different dimensions of the individual labels on the 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of label…
