I am using Go To Related Records (GTRR) to toggle between files using a button in a portal. The first click-through shows all records (bad). The next click-back shows just the selected set (good). Each subsequent click-through show just the selected records in each file (good). How can I make the first click-through show only the selected set? I'm using a script, GTRR w. Show Only, external script to go to layout and mode. Thanks for any input Mark Microquest

I have a layout on which there is a single editable field formatted as a pop-up list and a portal that displays records based on that pop-up list. The problem I am having is that, because there is no second editable field, the pop-up list reopens everytime after you select a value. Omitting the editable field from the Tab Order doesn't help. Adding another editable field just looks dumb. Any ideas??

I can not seem to figure out the report layout. I have Regions, chapters, and members. I want a printout like below: Region ChapterNumber Members listed ChapterNumber Total members in that chapter Subtotal for members in that region Then grandtotal of all members at the end. Novice here. I am trying to print labels with the same text on every label to go on folders to be given out. The self-adhesive labels are from Office Max and do not have a standard format id. They are on 8.5 x 11, 3 across, each is 1" x 2 5/8" , 30 labels. I have 3 lines of text on each and the first line is a larger font size than the other 2 lines. I set up the label sizes manually at 1" high. When I print them, as you move down the page, each block of text moves just a little bit farther down in the label. Could the larger font size on the first line of text be causing this? What to do?

I think I'm stuck in FM 6 thinking. I have a FM7 DB that has 2 tables. L2 Main and L2 Bureau Raw. L2 main contains client personal data, and L2 Bureau Raw contains accounts listed on a clinets Experian Equifax and Transunion credit reports. I want a value list that shows a clients Experian accounts only. Created a relationship called EX General Accounts with a match with L2 Main to L2 Bureau raw. Social Security & " " & EX is what is in both match fields for this relationship. Can anyone tell me if there's a way to maximise the FM APPLICATION window size on a PC so that an FMP opener file flash screen can always be made to fill the entire display - not just whatever size the application window was last left at ... which looks awful? Hi all, Please pardon me for the stupid question i'm asking and those that will certainly follow but i'm brand new at FM and have been playing around with my 3 days old FM Pro 7 program with no success to have my first DB running. I am attempting to hide and show buttons on a list view layout using a portal. The portal relationship it a self-join, eg. Display Button = :Display Button. The Display Button Field is a calculation that evaluates to "Yes" when all the criteria has been met, and "" if not. The portal hides and shows the button but not for the record that has just been updated by another user on the server (5.5). The button will only appear if you change layouts and return to the list view. Is there any way to have the portal appear without making the user run a script? Hi! I'm new here and hope you'll forgive me if my question is too easy. I have "Yield" field and 2 repeating fields "wt%" and "Amount in LBS". In "Amount in LBS" field I need the following calculation performed: (Yield * wt %) / 100.The problem is that when I change the value in the "Yield" field, just the first row in the repeating field recalculates itself. What do I need to do to make all the rows in the repeating field recalculate? Thank you!

Hi, I am wondering which technique to use for the following desired goal? I want to track incoming orders of groups of video tapes. I would like to create a new record for the whole group (rather then a record for each individual tape). This is all easy enough. But then I want to also have an individual record for each tape so that as staff members work on the tapes they can log their data. For example if I receive 15 video tapes I would want to create a PO containing data and instructions from the client in this record for all 15 tapes. The deal is this, I use a filtered sorted portal on the left side of my layouts for a menu. What shows in the portal depends on a match between the "menuName" and "gMenuName" a global. The portal sorts on "MemuSort" a numeric based with numbers for sort position. Always worked in FM5-6 but in FM7 with the sort is set to "MenuSort" it does not. In fact if you open the portal properties and "reset the sort" it will sort but only stay sorted until you leave the layout, but upon return it is again unsorted. Is this just a bug in FM7 portal sort or am I missing something?

OK Dont even know if this is possible but here goes. I have got a variety of fields that are from a value list. I am wanting to have a second field which can determine the range that these value lists go for, for the chosen set of records. The value list is this ES1 Early ES1 Mid ES1 Late S1 Early S1 Mid etc etc..... you get the idea(there are 16 of those altogether) I need a field that will say that these records go from ES1 Mid to S1 Late (or whatever) this will then go to a relational database to put in an appropriate picture for a report card. Recently I built a DB using the FileMaker Business Tracker solution as a template. (I'm just at the beginning) but I can't solve a problem using a script on a portal. This is the situation. On the "Company" layout I have a portal from the "Contact" table that display the name of people working for the company. My intention is to click on the contact name on the portal in order to get more details (phone, mail, email etc). To do this I imported the script from the FM Business Tracker file and adapted it to my settings. The Script works fine. Is anyone else frustrated with FileMaker 7's inability to distinguish word breaks? I use a lot of "text based" layouts (for invoices, etc) that have some text that now is breaking within words so that part of a word is on a second line. I don't recall this ever happening in Version 6. My layouts are designed for both Windows and Mac so it is difficult (if not impossible) to format each layout with hard breaks.

I need to provide a value list for a list of Codes which also displays a description of those codes next to it. However, once chosen that field will only contain the code itself and not the description. HanDBase offers a simple way of doing this called "DB Popup". Basically it is just a "link" (I don't know if this is a true relationship) to a different table containing a field for the codes and a field for the description. Once you choose which value you want, you can tell it which field to display from that table. This is so incredibly useful and easy to do in HanDBase, but I don't see clearly how this can be done in FileMaker. Any solutions? Thanks.

I am having a rather difficult time creating labels. Whether I use a predefined template or custom measurements, the results are always wrong. I end up having to tweak the layout to make the data fit. I have a receding hairline and can ill afford to start pulling my hair out. Has anyone else encountered problems generating labels? Hello, first, i want to emphasize my thanks to this forum, i appreciate all the help. Suppose you have a list of play lists (for songs), and you have another table full of Songs with artist information and so on. I want to have a drop down list with the song names in it on a "Select Songs for Playlist" layout (with a playlists table/detail) - kind of like invoice / line item stuff... in fact, just like it. Hi, I'm interested in creating a layout, which can be displayed in edit mode and also displayed in read-only mode. A user wants a screen where they can only look - but cannot touch. I know you can set permissions for this, but one potential problem is that the user actually wants a button for editing and a button for new and a button for viewing. HI all, Is there a better way to do this?? I have a supllier field that links to table of suppliers on an ID number. In the pop-up I would like to display only the NAME of the company. It would be possible if i had control over the width of the columns in the pop-up (column1: width of 0; would hide the key field & column2: with of 2 inches would give me room for the company name to display). Right now what i have is a calculated display field on top of my SupplierID pop-up so that when the desired ID is selected the display field is automatically populated with the company name. thanks Dan

hi there, I just started using FM pro 6 about a week a go. I created a DB Now I want the key field to be an Auto number, so I go to the field options and set it to "serial NUmber" START 1 and incurment as by 1. This works fine we I use it in the browse mode, however when I go to I.E. to access the database this does not work. I tried this on two different computers the same issue. ALso I haveing the same problem with a script "I made a button that put the data auto in a given field", again this works fine in the Browse mode but when I go to I.E. or even Firefox the script does not work. Your help will be greatly appriciated.

I am using a portal to create records related to the main db record. Displaying a new record in the main db causes a blank record from the db in the portal to be displayed. Entering info in the portal creates the record in the related db and causes a new blank to display. Each time you enter info into the blank a new blank is created. The "blank record" does not actually exist in the related db. The problem is the blank record displays whether I want it to or not, even when I am printing out a record from the main db with its associated records from the related db in a portal. I have a system printing invoices for customers. Each invoice contains two portals, one for part and one for labour. Each portal is 8 rows high. When viewing on screen I simply enable the vertical scrollbar to allow more than 8 entries. However, I'm now creating my layouts for printing and can't figure out how to make the portal increase it's row count to allow all the extra portal rows to show. Does anyone know a way of doing this? we've had to go stand alone with our student database until we upgrade to servce status... in transfer, our main student file (stud.file) is having difficulties backing up to original backup file... no problem except our main stud.file is the db for our teacher timetables (teachtime.file) and also calls on our teacher file (teach.file) for info... so our portals in teachtime.file no longer pick up info from stud.file... its somehow switched over to looking in stud.file.bu for its info (and this file no longer works!)... so I changed the lookup relationship file from stud.info.bu to stud.info thinking this would work... and now the records in browse mode in…

I'm making a straightforward name & address database, and am taking the opportunity to use graphics to make a more handsome interface than I've been able to in the past. What I'd really like would be to use vector art, rather than .jpegs or FMPro shapes, so that my graphics will scale accurately regardless of my user's screen size. I find that when I import an .eps, it scales poorly [like raster graphics]; an .ai [illustrator file] imports, but appears trasparent [i.e. no image information]; and a SVG is grayed out. Any advice, or am I out of luck?

I have an FM7 file with a project table that conditionally relates to 4 other tables resulting in 8 different portals that I am trying to print. Because the results come from different tables, I am printing from the central project table and having very bad printing results when sliding portals. The first couple work then it fails compeltely. I know printing and sliding portals isn't optimal, but don't know of another solution off hand. Anyone seen this? HELP!

Hi All, Is there a way to have animated buttons in FM7?? Something that would change as the cursor goes over it instead of having the cursor change into a hand when over a button. I would also like to have buttons with 2 states (pressed & not pressed), Is the best way to do this by using a container field for a button and make it receive different looking graphics?? On my data entry screen I have 6 checkboxes. On my report form, I want to print out only the name of what items were checked off. My problem is the report form field lists the items checked ina column, and I need it to print out in a row in order to save space. Just dragging & shaping the field to one long row does not work, it only shows the first choice and the rest are out of sight below it, all space to the right of that first chice is blank.

I'm scripting a Find by going to a special layout, Enter Find Mode [Pause], having them key in the criteria, press return, and Perform Find. I'd like for the Find Mode layout to present a few options: namely, Omit, and {Replace|Constrain|Extend}, which I can check prior to executing Perform Find. I first tried creating a layout field that mapped to a global, formatted by radio buttons, etc., but in Find Mode the buttons are inoperative. I'm not surprised, since in Find Mode you're not editing a record, but I wondered if anyone knew of a way to do what I'm trying to do? Many thanks, Chap

I am new to FileMaker Dev 7, so please excuse me if this seems like a stupid question. I have a Custom dialog window pop-up when a certain condition is satisfied. I am trying to insert a field name within the body of the text in the Custom Dialog window. For example, if a person selects an item that is assigned to another person, they get the message "This item has already been selected by another user." I have a comprehensive address database and I am trying to create a label printing solution. My problem is that occasionally it would be nice when printing to a predefined label sheet such as Avery layouts, to specify how many blank spaces to skip based on a variable field. This way a sheet that has already been used and has several spare labels is not wasted. I am sure that this could be done by creating a script which creates several blank records in the found set, sorts them so that they appear at the top and then deletes them after printing. Does any one have any suggestions on a better way of doing this?

Hello, I am trying to build a simple application that assigns points to people according to certain activities and at the end it adds the points for each one of them and ranks them from highest to lowest. I have two databases, Parent and LineItems. I want to be able to display a selected description of the data in a portal with numerous items. I then want to display all the information of one record in a large, single record portal. Finally, I want to show the user which line item is select in the portal by highlighting the portal row. Currently, I am setting a number field with a Max( LineItem::Serial_# ) + 1 and a decsending sort to highlight and dislplay the current record in the single portal. I have a layout with a portal that I'm trying to publish with IWP for Entry Only. When I view it on the web, I can only add data to one row of the portal. That one row works great and publishes the data to the right database. I just can't get it to give me another row. Am I just doing something wrong or is it not possible to enter data into multiple rows of a portal with IWP? (I'm using FMPro 6 with Mac OS 10.3.5) Thanks, Amy

I have one portion of a solution which lists groups of which a person is a part. The groups are listed in another table, with a join table to connect them. There are multiple groups, and each person can be a member of multiple groups. I display the groups in the people table with a portal. I also use a sub-summary to generate a report of group members. If I want a list of only one group, I do a find on the group number in the portal, then script the appropriate sort and switch to Preview in the report layout. When reworking a database -- say, moving a table from one file to another, or moving a task layout to a new table-group -- it's often necessary to redirect a portal on an existing layout, or to duplicate a portal into a new setting. I've got a mess of fields laid out vertically. Is there any shortcut for changing all of their heights at once? (e.g. from 20 pixels to 14). How about for compacting them vertically so that the bottom of one field coincides with the top of the one underneath? Format Painter seemed the way to go for changing the heights, but I can't figure out how to apply it to a group of objects. (I'm in OS X) I've also tried using the Size box, Alignment, and Field Format without luck. Thanks, Chap

I have 2 pop-up menus with that are non-enterable in browse mode. Is there a sciprting function I can use to turn these to enterable after the user clicks a button. Basically want to be able to set Field Behavior:Allow user to enter:in browse mode = true. Is this possible? Thanks, -G

I am trying to use a portal to so me related records from a table as I type into a global field. Example if I type 'Da' in he global field i'll get all the records from my user table that have a name of Davis, Dali, Dance.... Table 1 is Users has a field for ID, First name and Last Name (other fields too but not important here.) I have another table lets call it User Logs their main are relation is via the ID field. I've tried making additional tables and relating the global field to the ID number and many combination of that but i just cant seem to get it working. Any suggestion to get this working would be greatly appreciated.

I have a database that tracks education-related Personnel, Agencies and Affiliations (the join between a person and agency). In an Affiliation record, I track the role(s) that a person performs at a given agency. I store the roles in an 'affiliation role' table and the data is viewed through a portal (in the main Affilation screen). Problem: At an agency, a person generally fills more than one role (principal, administrator, school board chair). If I do a search in find mode, I can only enter one role in a portal. Hi, I'm new here and new to FM7. I have been using 5.5 for years now. Anyway, I've been asked to design a DB using FM7. I have a few portals that contain numerous fields. To make it easier to read I turn on the Alternate background fill in the portal setup. It looks just fine until I use the scroll bar. When I start scrolling, the portal field boxes are no longer transparent. That gives me ugly white boxes on top of the background fill color. I'm sure to get complaints. Is this a known bug? I would like to be able to scroll without the portal fields reverting to a white background. Can it be done? Thanks for the help, Tom

I have a portal that is from another table that has ranges and prices for miles... They are linked together by the parents ID and both have recordID.. Example... ----------------------------------------- | (From Miles) (ToMiles) = (Money) per (Miles) | ----------------------------------------- all of the ( ) are fields in the portal.. I am building a "Ticket Reservation" database and would like to make a seating chart. Something that has the physical layout showing each in the auditorium, and a status (maybe red for sold, green for available) of each seat. The database contains a one record per seat, each with the seat number (e.g. A 107) and status (Sold, Available). I can easily add fields as necessary. Does anyone have a clue how to do this?

I'm attaching a screen shot of a record in browse mode. I'm having a terrible time getting things to slide properly when I preview/print it. I hope it's somewhat obvious how I want it to look: The line items should shrink upwards. They do. Everything below the line items should slide up, maintaining their positions relative to one another. I'm referring to the two column-totals (3) and the Subtotal, and everything beneath it. The Print Date is in the footer and should stay put. The stuff on the right in the gray sidepanel should not print. Hi, I need to know if there is a way to turn off selection of a portal row when the background is clicked. I have a portal that takes up most of a page and has a layout inside of it. When I click in the back ground of the portal, it selects that portal row and changes the colors. I need a way around this. I have tried putting containers in the back ground that do nothing, but I can not get around it. Thanks

When defining a value list from fields from another file I can either make a VL in File A from the fields in FIle A then define the VL in File B using the already defined VL in File A, or in File B define the VL as directly from the fields in File A. Other than the fact that the second procedure requires a relationship, is there any advantage to either method? Thanks.

Some quick background -- I'm a music editor by trade, and part of my job is typing up notes for the composer to use when he is working on a show. The "spotting notes" that I generate are our bible for that show: I have length, start times, cue names and numbers. Suppose you have a grid with some items in it, say customer names. You have a button on the far right, which allows the user to jump to another layout to see more details about the customer record in the grid. the thing is that there is always a blank record after the last one and it shows a button, but no data? is there some magic setting to turn off this option? thanks, J__

I'm using FM5 with Windows 95. I am learning FM5 and need some help. I have noticed that Pop ups, Roll overs and Help files can only be used if you have FM6/7 on Windows 98 and above and with plug ins. Is there any way I create a script in HTML or Java ( I have a very basic grasp of programming )or by using script maker without the need to upgrade or use plug ins?
