FileMaker Server General Discussions

  1. FileMaker Server v7 - v11 · Started by Oldfogey,

My customer has been running FMP V3 under Citrix for a few years. Although this was not a supported combo, the performance was reasonable. We did have initial problems but the then H/W supplier managed to give everyone their own copy of FMP.exe. It worked. Recently, I talked them into upgrading to FMP V6. What a shambles! I won't describe all the problems but just recently things have become almost impossible. (Basically, losing links to files and using 100% CPU for up to 30 mins doing nothing.) Unfortunately, I do not know just what the H/W guy did with V3. FMP told me that we had to use Server with Citrix, even though I cannot find this documented anywhere. So my …

  2. I stuck a dozen global text fields in a db being served. I put some test data into them while working on a script. Now, no matter what I do, every time this database is opened, on any machine on any platform (even the same machine twice in a row), my test data is back in the globals. I even made a little script to clear these globals I manually invoke every time I open it. If this wasn't temporary, I'd put this script as the startup script. I understand the local nature of globals on a served file, and now know that getting this job done is better with a one-record preferences file across a constant relationship (so the data goes into "real" fields that look and …

  3. I have a g4 that acts as the host for our fm files. There are three other G4's all on 10.3 and an IBM running XP The IBM is always connected and there is no problem. The macs are all cut off after idle time. I shut off the disconnect button at one time and now I can not find which preferences I found it at. I need that information but also right after I had shut that option off it seemed better but still disconnected the macs. Is there a setting on the host computer or all of the guest computers that I can change to keep them always connected? Version: v6.x Platform: Mac OS X Panther

  4. How does an FM Server solution compare in terms of speed, reliability and database integrity to a PostgreSQL (or MySQL, for that matter) solution? I've heard Bad Things about FM Server performance under anything other than a very light load, and I wanted to know what some experts had to say.

I have a copy of Filemaker Server 5.0 that I want to install on the server. There will be eight computers, running various Windows software (ME, XP, 98 and 2000). 6. This is my first post, so I appologize if I am doing something wrong. I just need help with a situation. We are developers of FM solutions. I am doing an install for a government faciltiy. They have very tight security. They have two major concerns. 1. They say it is a major security breach to install FM Server to the root of C. Is there any ay around this? 2. Thay also say it is a major security breach to pass the client password in open text over the network to the data files on the Server. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Jeff Hardesty Version: Server v5 Platform: Windows 2000

  7. Hi folks ! Is it anyhow possible to set up a local backup system for the situations where the server is down ? I mean a system where solution first tries to open database in server. If there is no connection it uses a database locally and later - in next contact with server - updates all new records to server. Is it possible to make a fresh backup to local disk every time the database closes (which can then be used if there is no connection to server) ? Arttu Version: Developer v6 Platform: Windows XP

  8. Hey Everyone, I'm trying to connect to a local database from a remote location. I downloaded the FM Server and figured I'd give it a shot. It's REALLY slow. I'm not sure if it's the design of our database or if it's just the nature of so much data going over the connection. Both ends have either DSL or Cable for internet access. Are there any tricks to speed FM Server up? Thanks!

  9. I have developed a database using 5 FM files in Windows. I now need to transfer those files onto a Mac Server (running FMServer). There were already 3 files on the server that are viewable through "Host" (they are greyed out when "Opening"). However, the new files are not "Opening" when I configure the server. It seems as if it's ignoring the process for my Windows created FM files. Please help. What do I need to do to make these files visible over the server? P.S. 10. With the delay of FM7 Server release (very bad strategy if you ask me), I wanted to begin rocking and rolling with FMPro 7 and just use up to 10 users in the guest/host model until Server comes out. However - I read that the client version, FMPro7 only supports 5 users! What the #*%@+ ! I need more than that to get off the ground, I was planning on the 10 that FM6 supports. I am hoping that the 5 users deal is just a conserative cover your ass statement and that it may actually support more users, just with the typical performance hits. Can anyone confirm if Pro will support more than 5 users? Version: v7.x Platform: Windows XP

  12. A newbie needs help. I'm using FMP 6, FMP Server 5.5, and have FMP 6 Unlimited. Currently have FMP Server running on Windows 2000 and 12 users accessing approximately 55 databases as FMP clients on the network. Will soon need to provide web access to some of the databases to approximately 30 other users. Can I do this (should I do this) without setting up FMP Unlimited? If I need to set up unlimited, can it be done on a partition of the server different from the partition dedicated to FMP Server? Thanks for your help. Version: Server v5 Platform: Windows 2000

  14. Hi - head scratcher this one. I'm running Fmserver 5.2 on Windows 2003 Standard Edition. It is working fine on our network but it refuses to display hosted files when connecting remotely. The router has been configured to allow UDP/TCP traffic on port 5003 - the clients seem to connect but it refuses to display any of the files in the host dialog. IS there something I should be doing on Windows Server? Or do I have to upgrade to fmserver 5.5 If anyone has any ideas I should be very grateful. Thanks Peter Version: Server v5 Platform: Windows 2000

  15. All of a sudden my FM Server 5.5 has stopped serving my main database. All the other databases open automatically as the main one used to, but this one won't, on startup, or through manual selection. I checked the log file, which instructs me to open it in FileMaker Pro first. I have done this, both on the server and from another computer on the LAN (which is running Mac OS 9), but still server won't open this file. I have also run a recover on the file and server won't open the recovered file either. Any suggestions anyone? Version: Server v5 Platform: Mac OS X Panther

Hi Can someone explain to me how this works? I recently had my server v5 setup for 2hour flush (and I think this is why) and notice that some people were complaining that details that they had added were not showing up. So I changed this to the default of 15mins and rebooted the server and some of the entries which we couldn't find had appeared. Can someone tell me if this is the case that cased this or whether I should be looking into something else?? Thanks Simon

  20. I am updating our 20+ file solution daily. It is being served with Filemaker Server and we have about 15 users. Obviously, I deal with Define Field problems (need everyone to close the file to define fields). My question is, are professional developers NOT working on their solutions when users are using it? I have no choice. I can't avoid updating every few days, because we are constantly deciding on new features we want incorporated into the solution. What is the best way for me to do this? Right now, when I do major changes, I work early AM and late PM and on weekends. I shut it down in the office and VPN in, move the files to home and move them back.…

Yesterday we installed DSL for internet. If I configure the host computer using DHCP it will get on internet fine but none of the other computers can see FM files. You can open a FM file that is on the host computer but if the host has it already open you can not connect. If I configure host using "DHCP with manual IP address" (Address never changes) FM works great but then you can not connect to the internet. One or the other but not both. I have a Filemaker 6 script that generates a TV schedule for our channel for the next day, but I don't know how to tell either a) Filemaker Server (which hosts the file with the script) to run that script, or : Filemaker to run any given script (including that one) at a certain time every day. In the case of a), it seems like Filemaker Server can only run AppleScripts, and I don't know how to translate my Filemaker Script into an AppleScript. In the case of :, well, I just don't know any way of triggering scripts to run except for during Start-up. Any ideas for where I can get help with either option?

  26. The way my college runs the Filemaker databases is off 2 servers and then another server which has FileMaker Unlimited and webconnector. The problem is that the two filemaker servers shut down at 3 AM to backup. The other server is still running so that after the backup and the two servers are back online, the FileMaker Unlimited server doesn't know that they are back online. The way the college has it set up right now is they have a filemaker script that checks every hour for the databases. This is not efficient and I was wondering if there was another way to go about it? Thanks. Justin Grewe

Guys, I just read a post that made me nerveous: Post: Hi, We have a FileaMaker Server 5 on Windows 2000, and about 30 clients on pcs and Macs. 1. I'd like to know if the passwords are sent across the network in clear-text when I open a file on the client (laptop or desktop). Do I work with the hosted file on the server, or is it completely run by a client, and only saved on the server on commit? 2. FileMaker seems to be extremely client-oriented when it comes to performance of scripts. That leads me to the question: are the scripts/calculations processed on the server or on the client? Thanks Answer: Passwords are passed across the networ…

I have a problem that appears to be related to the FileMaker Server. I have a image database that is hosted on the Server. Users are accessing the file via Web Companion being hosted from a WinXP machine. About every 2 to 3 users is receiving an error that indicates "database not open". The Web Security database is being used for user management. I have made the changes to the database so the password for the web account has privileges to export the records. 32. We recently had a prolonged power outage and the server's backup battery ran out and the machine, running OSX, powered down while the server was still running. Obviously those files opened could not be used and we went backwards to our backup, which luckily was only 8 minutes old. Not much data was lost but if the next power outtage happens at the wrong time, we could lose as much as an hour of data. In OS 9, I was able to have an applescript that would trigger the Server to shut down at the power outage prior to losing battery backup power, thus saving all the data. In OSX this is just not possible, as best I can tell. The server is not scriptable and even with r…

First, I have pretty much zero experience with Filemaker. My problem with Filemaker is that I had to move the DB's from a NT4 server to a 2k server. I disconnected the DB's copied them over to the new server, re-ip'ed the new server to the old servers address and named the new server with the old server's name. The old server is offline now. The problem that I am running into is when a user tries to enter new information into a form on the Filemaker client program it states that "the field is not modifiable". Am I over looking something in copying the DB's from the old server? Please help. TIA Michael

  35. Hi All, Is there any way to recover a damaged file remotely? I am not our server administrator and often work off site, often when I generate new fields or run scripts remotely, the server seems to freeze or my connection with it, this results in the file being closed down. The culprit file can then not be accessed unless I log a call with my IT support to go and restore the "damaged" file locally on the server. It's a real pain in the butt when my IT support takes several days or weeks to respond to a request...this of course results in some serious down time.

  37. I'm currently hosting 5 files using FM Sever for OS X. So far things are going fine with the exception that for some reason one of the files is not being served. I looked at some of the possible reasons as to why one of the files is not being served such as 1. File permissions 2. The file is set to single user 3. The amount of files that FM Server can host. and all of them are set properly and I have checked all of them numerous times. The FM server automatically shuts down at a specified time to perform some maintenance backups and updates and when the FM Server automatically starts back up, one of the files is not being served. 42. It is very little known that FileMaker Server can be run on freeBSD systems with the linux binary compatability installed. This gives you the advantage of a rock-stable, speedy server even on limited hardware. However, the installation process is not entirely trivial, since the FileMaker rpm needs to run some scripts in order to install the software. Following a brief description of the steps involved: 1. Manually create a user and a group namd "fmserver". I choose UID/GID of 5003, according to the TCP port FileMaker Server is using. The user does not have to have many priviledges. 2. If not aleady installed, install the linux binary compatability enviroment c…

  46. Thanks, Riley. You are basically suggesting that I automate what I ended up having to do manually. While this would work, it bothers me that it seems like it wouldn't be very flexible. The way I'm envisioning it, I would have to predefine the funding source categories from the Service file in my find operation in the Clients file, so that whenever we added a new funding source, I'd have to reprogram the find scripts. I'm sure there's a more elegant solution, I'm just not coming up with it yet. Eric

Firstly, I have nothing to do with the network administration that we run our Filemaker server on so have limited knowledge about our network. 58. Alright. I knew I should have come here first. Received bad advice from another forum. Anyway, I have a home network with three computers networked together. They are all running XP Pro. 60. I am attempting to host a file on a Windows 2000 FileMaker Server. The file was previously available on a Mac OS9 computer. When I attempt to host the file I am getting the error "Error occurred; unable to open file." There was a start up script that was calling another database that was not present. I disabled that script but it is still not working. Any idea on how I can resolve this problem. I forgot to mention that the file is working if I access it directly with FileMaker and do not host it on a FileMaker Server.

  61. 1. has anyone tried the speed of fm server in a condition of 75 connected user with a solution of 120 tables?. Under this condition is the the amount of memory ram a significant effect? 500 Mb or 1024 Mb?, Is hiperthreading intel processor similar or significantly slower in speed than xeon in terms of fm functionality?. Is opteron or itanium processor a important jump in speed in terms of FM server functionality? I know the speed of the network, the speed of the hard disk and the speed of both side (client and server) are important elements in the whole context. However I am trying to balance the important of every element in a large network with 75 users and up. Has a…

  64. Hi all, and happy holidays: I'm working on a solution for a client who had an intern building his FM Server solution, and the intern has left the company, so I was called in to finish the job. This is the first time I've had to finish someone else's job, having previously done everything myself from scratch. Before I turned up, it seems that the intern was allowing users to access the databases using file sharing, and the files were being corrupted on a fairly regular basis. Now, I am working on them at my office, and in the meantime the customer will not be using the system at all, so the install will be clean, so far as what comes off my computers. The problem…

  65. I'm looking to max out performance of Windows 2000 Server, Filemaker Pro 5.5 and 50+ terminal services users at any given time. If anyone has this configuration running speedily, with 23+ databases open at a time, suggestions are welcome as to configuration choices. I have already consulted he best practices paper, and we are encountering the following issues. Note: FM Pro server 5.5 and term services are on different servers. 1. Terminal Services displays a blank blue screen after user remote login. Probably term services, but may be due to lots of pre-existing instances of Filemaker Client up and running. 2. 2 CPU machine always maxxed. This is a dual Xenon…

  66. Hello All: First off, I know my FM Server, so it isn't something obviously stupid, like having AppleTalk turned on or something like that. Now, the problem: I've got a client with an FM Server system, which I set up, and which has run fine since installation about six months ago. Suddenly it is doing something I've never seen before. After a panicked call from the owner I went in today, and every single client machine was showing the squiggly line for a cursor - you know, the one that means it is communicating with the host, like it shows when first loading a database. Every machine was completely locked up. FMServer showed some wierd info: Out of 15 guests, onl…

  67. I need a little seasoned advice. I'm in the process of setting up a network system for a doctors office. The office will only be networking 8 PC computers (all new) to start--but may grow to 10 or 15 computers. What is the down side to running Filemaker Server and a File Server on the same machine. Is it only a speed concern? Is the data safe running in such a configuration (even if it is slow)? With only 8-15 computers I'm wondering if two machine servers (database server, file server)are necessary. What are the risks of starting with both the databases and Files served from the same machine. Is there an increased data corruption potential? (If it is too slow…

We are now using 17 macs on OS 9 with version 4.1 of Filemaker We want to use panther and go to Filemaker 6 and we want to run all our computers together using filemaker on TCP/IP What will Filemaker Server do for us. 69. Hi, I've developed an imagebank for a large client of ours, and it runs fine (local). Now I've made a new solution thats wired to the imagebank so they can check for imagestatus while the enter data. Still works good but now they are moving to another location (outside our own building) so sharing the databases will not be possible anymore using our own LAN. What is the best way to let them connect to the image-database only? The booking solution they take with them is - as stated before - wired to the imagebank, which we host on fm-server (both local and online). Can i set fm to look for a hostfile on a specific IP (and specific name for the DB) without userinte…

  70. Hi all: If you look at the posts from Chopper, Lucky and myself (stanley) from the past two weeks, you'll see that there has suddenly been a spate of problems with FM Server on networks where at least one user is running Jaguar and the server is running an earlier Mac OS (either 8.6 or 9). I was wondering if anyone else has noticed erratic behavior of this sort with a similar setup, and if anyone had any thoughts or knowledge regarding Jaguar perhaps doing something strange on a TCP/IP network, which might cause some kind of interference. Of course, I may be drawing a false conclusion from those three posts, but I've been having a major problem with one client (…

Does anyone know why I am losing connection with my FM server v5.5 ? I have 20 macs on a Ethernet network connecting to a G3 (beige) FM Server 5.5 OS9 hosting 15-20 databases. The other macs connecting to the server range from OS 9 - 10.3.1. The problem I have is that after about 20mins using 10.3.1 it loses conection and gives me a error message of " Communication with the host was interupted and could not be re-established. (-3284)" I connect to FM Server in 10.3.1 by selecting File - Open Remote and selecting DB. The problem happpens to three computers here all running 10.3.1. I did not have this problem in 10.2.8. Any ideas??

I've installed FM server and have transferred my working files to the server's directory however I'm being given the following error when attempting to access any of the DB files via a browser "HTTP Error 405 - Method not allowed!". I've also noticed that, unlike FM Pro, the server version doesnt appear to automatically recognise the file type FP5 and rather than associate this with the file type "FileMaker Pro Database" it leaves it as an unknown file type i.e. with the generic windows icon and I suspect that this is the underlying problem. Im using FM Pro 6, FM Server 5.5 and Windows NT Server. Any advice on how to go about rectifying this would be much appr…

  75. I am experienced with FileMaker Development, but this is my first personal experience with installing a server. The server is currently running Windows NT and was the same server we were using for development using FileMaker Server v3. I know where the files are supposed to go (in the FileMaker Server's Program directory or one level below it), but it there a way to have FileMaker Server v5.5 control and automatically open database files in a different directory. We don't want to move the files off the server, but we do want to have them exist on a different logical drive. Part of the issue is for backups. But an equally large issue is the need for separation f…

Whenever I connect to my server, the admin window notes on the bottom that I do not have the administration plug-in installed. I shared the same problem many users had trying to update the server to the latest release. The updater sucked and someone at FileMaker should be fired. Anyhoo, I had to do a clean-install of the server program in order to update it. I was hoping this would resolve my administration problem, but it did not. I tried installing the admin plug-in on another machine but got the s…

  78. Regarding my previous question, things did not work out well with my attempt to install Windows NT 4.0 on the computer I wanted to use as a server, so I foolishly sold my copy of Filmaker Server NT on Ebay. 79. Hello All, I have a solution running on one FM server which is now getting pretty slow. I already got a second server and yesterday I moved half the files to the second server. The problem that I'm getting is that the files do not seem to find the new locations. When I had one server and I would move the files to a new directory the first time I would open them up it would ask me for the location of the file. It would then browse around find the new location and open the file. From then on the files would find each other fine. Now with the 2nd server, when I open the files they would ask me for the location of the files on the 2nd server. Again I would b…

Has anyone run into this situtaion: Occasionally while using the remote admin plugin feature for my 6.0 FM server (plug in is in my FM developer 5.5)and accessing the server (maybe to close a file) the server system crashes? 92. The filemaker server administration plugin adds some external script steps to filemaker server, which all start with the prefix "FMA..." Since these are meant for the Server Admistration plugin Filemaker does not provide documentation for them. I'm wondering if anyone knows how to use the the "FMA-GetGuestDetails..." status function? It would be nice if identifying information could be gleaned about a user to help customize the content that they are served.

  93. I need to serve databases to FM clients as well as via the Web Companion. This used to work fine under OS9. I now have all the databases on an OSX machine (10.2.6) running FM Server 5.5. FMP6 clients reach them OK. According to the Server Admin Guide, I should be able to publish these files to the web with FMP. So I install FMP6 on the same machine. Fire it up, "Open Remote.." to the Server files and enable the Web Companion. This does not work however. In fact, using some simple test files, I found that enabling web sharing on a non-FM Server hosted file prevents other FMP6 clients from seeing that file. Is this a problem with FM Server and FMP being on the sam…

  97. Hello, I am in the process of configuring a new network for a client. I had planned to buy an IBM server with Windows Small Business Server 2003 Standard Edition. However after checking with FMI they don't support SBS 2003 (how lame). I really hate having to dish out $1000 for an outdated Filemaker Pro 5.5 Server and then having to dish out another $1000 for W2k Server(SBS 2003 is only $600). I only have 5 users sharing about 15 files. Would I be better off going with a WinXP Pro box with Filemaker Client? Also would hosting Qbooks Pro Files on the same box really hurt my performance?
