I'm having a problem with the web security database. I didn't know it existed until an hour ago, so I'm new to it. Web Security DB is set up as: All Databases All Users (no password): Browse Create Edit Field name "sodsc": Exact Search There is no security set up on the database called "PROJECTS.FP5" which is the one I'm working on now. The URL that I'm using is: http://xxxxxxxxxx:591/projects/FMPro?-db=PROJECTS.FP5&-format=search_results.html&-lay=Project&-Error=search_results.html&sodsc=EP9D43o5iQ5L&-find= I get a javascript pop up returned that says: Access Restriction: You do not have access privileges to perform the action: find Th…

I have published a database to the web that requires relative dates (i.e. if requested_date > today). The database stays open on the web server 24/7, so the today function doesn't update (because the file doesn't close/open; apparently the status(currentdate) doesn't update either). Everything works fine, if I manually close/open the file once each day. Is there a solution other than a plug-in that triggers a script based on date/time?

Is there any way to retain the search results so that a user can go back to them easily? For example, if a user searches for all records created today, then goes and modifies one, then wants to go back to the list of results. The only way I can see to do that is to actually execute the search again, in which case the user needs to remember what he actually searched for. The initial search will be done via a form, not a URL. Thanks, Carrie

Hi I've read a lot of these messages and it sounds like I may be in for a world of pain trying to do what I want to do but here goes. My client has an ASP<->Access holiday booking site which they want changed to use filemaker to match up with their own office database. It looks like just throwing the filemaker database in there and using normal ASP connections is a non starter due to speed issues (I can't even get it to connect anyway) but I understand it's a lot faster using CDML. I don't really want to rewrite the entire site but if I had to using CDML, does this require Filemaker server to be running (I guess so) - this is also a problem as …

The search is being executed correctly in FM. The page that is returned says showing records 1-20 of 600, but it only displays the first record. the search form has hidden fields -db, -lay, -error, -format, and -max. I've tried without the max as well. My thinking though, is that since it actually executes the search correctly, that it's actually the html search_results page that's the problem. I dumbed it all the way down to displaying only one field and it still doesn't work. Are there any requirements for the search results page that I'm unaware of? Thanks, Carrie

I am a graduate student and the professor I am working for had me create a database and publish it on the internet. After many hours, I finally figured it out. Now this is what he wants me to to. On his website, he had a form/survey that people can fill out online. He wants to know if once that form is filled out and it is submitted, if that information can feed directly into a filemaker database created for that survey? Right now, he has the information feeding directly into his email. So...is there a way to feed that info. directly into filemaker and how do I do this? Thanks!! Kristi

You will need Server if you are also serving more than a couple of non-web users; i.e. FMP users of the same database on a LAN. You should look at using CDML to customise you web pages. Instant Web Publishing is for very basic database access. Hope this helps. Garry

Is there a way to set a token using a value list that's been pulled from a database? (choose the value of the token from a drop down menu) I want to do this all via a form before processing. I don't want to pull the token from an already created field value. (the ultimate goal is to be able to edit 2 different records in 2 different databases with one form. I'm trying to use inlines, which I've never done before. Alternative suggestions welcome ) TIA, Carrie [ February 14, 2002, 09:35 AM: Message edited by: Carrie ]

Am I correct in understanding that there is no way to search for records where, for example: First_Name=Jane AND Last_Name contains Smith? It's either all or nothing, right? One operator per search? That's what I'm getting from the docs. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks, Carrie

Hi. I've posted over 500 times. I'm a regular contributor. So you are a newbie. You are also becoming, like it or not, a developer. Take an attitude and call me in the morning. No seriously, the Internet Forums are a great resource. Many questions you haven't even thought of have already been answered. Like I say, I've posted a lot. That is because I visit the Internet Forums almost daily, as do a few other contributors. You would do yourself (and your employer, if you have one) a big favor by researching past threads and visiting these forums every day. You don't have to contribute to learn. We finally have both ends set up (one on each coast) so that they work - sort of. We have FM 5 and Server here with one person on the East coast connecting with TCP/IP. Unfortunately, it is VERY slow. We have dsl.net. He has a Verizon dsl connection that is in a "pool" with one other user. It took a while to figure out that we had to set our firewall to allow the pool IP address rather than his actual computer IP. As a test, we had him use his dial-up (56K modem) connection. It was actually FASTER than using the dsl. Is there a known issue with Verizon? We seem to have boiled this problem down to a dsl/connection thing. What should be our approach? Thanks once again…

I use FileMaker Pro 5.5 Unlimited connected to a FileMaker 5 Server. I set up Instant Web Publishing for my database. When I go to the search link, I get a form that allows to me search for the fields of that layout. After typing in search values, I clicked on the search link but it didn't work. It returned me back to the same search page, but my old search value was still there. I did this for a sample database that came with FileMaker Unlimited. After clicking the search, a table was displayed with the search results. Where does the problem lie? Is it in my request URL or in the actual layout? Are there any limits to how many fields a layout can have? T…

FM server can't publish to the web with web companion? From looking at spec sheets and reading pdf files and help files, it seems that FM server only does direct FM clients, not web publishing like FM Pro (which, ironically, as the 'entry level' product, does both) There is some reference to using the Web Companion in the documentaion, but it looks like ANOTHER computer would have to run FM pro, open the server hosted database remotely, and the FM pro machine would publish to the web. can this be true? two machines ? Am I missing something? Why is the 'server' version less functional than the regular version? any insight wo…

OK, we got it working through an IP address in FileMaker (with a firewall). Problem: it took 45 minutes to open (for our person across the country) and pretty much forever to do a "Find." When we test it here, it is just as quick as opening and using it on our own network. To make it useable, it needs to be a lot faster. Is there something else we need to do? We are on dsl at both ends. Thank you.

We have a database with 9 related files, many scripts, etc. We have an office on each coast. Is there a way that we can update each other periodically? This would mean that if someone here (or there) added a new record, a comment or any other information to any of the files, the database at the other location could also obtain this information. I'm guessing there are probably multiple ways of accomplishing this. We need a secure method that doesn't require a big investment and is also easy to use (if there is such a thing). Thank you.

Hi, I have a decent background in the web, enough to call myself a web designer and create intermediate Flash presentations, web graphics, etc. However, I would very much like to be able to provide a database for someone who wished to create an e-Commerce sight. I know people go to school for Database Technology for years. But I don't want to build an electronic town hall yet. I just want to be able to do something moderately humble, like sell cheese. Would FileMaker Pro be a good way t…

I have an application running on a G4 server with FM5 Unlimited / webstar / lasso. Three days a year it has to support 200 users simultaneously. They each will edit around 30 of their own records, about 5,000 total. The first run was a disaster. After the users started piling on, it slowed to a crawl and made everybody real grumpy before we finally gave up and let them go home. We have plenty of bandwidth. The bottleneck seems to be the single Filemaker client. I have seen some references to RAIC, but can't see any posts or much info on it anywhere on how to configure it (what software versions go where, where the DB files reside, etc..) Does anyone know where I c…

I'm having trouble figuring out if FM 5.5 has the capability to serve databases over the internet to other FM users, instead of using a web brower. I'm succesfully publishing a database using Web companion. The IP addresses work fine, and users are able to access with a browser. Can FM 5.5 host a remote user of FM, i.e. that is not on a local network? For example,on the same local network, TCP/IP shows a host fine. Can a remote user with FM on their machine connect to the internet and then get to a FM host that is not local? the ODBC stuff looks more for 'foreign' database access. (though it's called remote access companion) I've got a port sniffer finding a…

I have an FMP 5 database set up to manage vendor records via an intranet and browsers. Each user has the option to delete, edit or create a new record. Create new and edit both work fine, but when I try to delete a record, I get an error 101. Doesn't 101 mean record not found? I can search for the record I want to delete, even get a record detail of it via my browser, I just can't delete it. Using: Mac G4, IE 5, FMP5 unlimited. Not sure where to start troubleshooting. Thanks in advance for any suggestions! [This message has been edited by webvox (edited February 15, 2001).]

Well, after trawling various forums looking for a way to get my webpages pulling data out of FMP and finding a few examples (non of which worked) and crap support from Apple, here's how I finally got it to work. A word to the wise, though... FMP is a desktop application and has a very poor performance supporting concurrent users. Infact even basic SELECT queries are unacceptably slow, even for a single user. You cannot run a commercial website with it, especially as its ODBC driver only supports Level 1 queries (no nice JOINS et al for you, buddy). In my code I've included a Timer function so you can see for yourself how quickly it pulls out the records. In terms a com…

Help me! :-) I've just in the process of upgrading our company's web-based FMPro dbase. It used to run on FM4.1. Is there a way to access FileMaker Unlimited via ODBC? We want to access a database through the web, but need a robust, flexible, and secure way of doing it. It doesn't appear that the FileMaker templates will let us do this natively, and we'd like to do it with ColdFusion and IIS. I was told upfront that this was a possibility, but getting no where when trying to actually issue SQL queries via ODBC. Does anyone have good documentation for doing this?

Hi, I am novice FM user, so please forgive my ignorance and go easy with the flames. I am a web developer and I want to create a site that connects to a friend's copy of FileMaker Pro 5.5. I know in FMP5 itself you can simply put 1/1/1999..1/1/2000 to get all the records between those two dates. But is there a nice and simple way to do that for the online stuff? I know my pages are setup correctly because I can search for an individual date and get results...but if I try a ranged search it gives me a message saying there were no search results. Basically I have 1 date field and want users to be able to pick a range in which to search by. Is there some other way that has just slipped my mind? Thanks in advance Dave

Hello everyone, I'm building a real-time signin program in a web interface, but I don't need all of the corresponding databases open all of the time until I need them to conserve memory. I know that the easiest solution is to keep all of the databases (there are 8 of them) open all the time, but my question is: has anyone out there actually been successful in opening and closing of databases via scripts run on a web interface?? I don't want any solutions if you have because the suspense is killing me if someone just gave me the answers. I just want to know if anyone has actually done it, so I know it is possible. Thanks in advance!

Hello, i've set fmp unlimited on a w2k server with web companion on port 591 and wsc activated. I'm finding problems with some clients behind a firewall/proxy on port 591, they can't access db! I closed a deal with web hosting company last week, but today they sent me an email saying that they can't host FileMaker databases. Where could I find lowest prices on web hosting for FileMaker databases? The reason I am looking for low prices is because I want cheap stuff, but the real reason is because it is for cemetery website and database and they can't afford to pay so much. I am looking at 1 to 4 email addresses 20MB (50MB max) storage ftp and other FileMaker compatible modes of uploading Input appreciated Thanks in advance.

We are attempting to use a Validate and Submit GoLive Action to verify form data before record creation. I am trying to find our the 'best' way to create links within pages other pages, graphic etc. Web server is IIS 5. Any suggestions help much appreciated. Here are example paths to the files: 1) Full URL- http://www.mydomain.com/pagename.html 2) IP address - 211.123.123.321/pagename.com 3) Directory path such as: ../images/buttons/button1.gif or pagename.html or ../otherwebsite/index.html (and images and other pages linked to this such as) pageone.html images/buttons/button1.gif My questions are, which is faster (I suspect no.3) but what kind of extra load is put on the server if the full IP or URL is used? Thanks,

Using FM5, I have created a web-based survey. Respondents connect to the survey and answer questions using a variety of input types (text, radio etc.). I would like to add an administrative site that would allow me to view and edit respondents' record via the web. Survey respondents cannot be allowed access to the admin site (to view or modify the responses of others). This would suggest using filemaker security controls to require a username and password. From what I can see, however, respondents must be given browse/write permission in order for their form submissions to update the database. Furthermore, I do not want to burden respondents by requiring a FM username/p…

Hi Garry, Hi other helpfull people, I downloaded the cdml kit and openned it in the FM unlimited web folder. The cdml reference and tools seem to be fm files at first but would not open with FM 5 or 5.5 so i oppened them with notepad. It seemed like some kind of code but it was really messy, messy. I came to the point were I was thinking about the process and three things were in my mind, the fm server, the fm unlimited, and the ISP. NOW the big question is how?? Like Kulmansan stated "I thouhgt some how I was going to run the database from my computer" using FM unlimited. I am thinking the same. Things I know: 1. I am running unlimited in a win2k, using web compa…

HOME PAGE HELP Advice appreciated We are using FM4 in our real estate office to maintain our listings, print window cards, do contracts, listing reports etc etc in fact everything to run our office - Great. Vaughn and others have solved several problems and provided helpful advice. Have been using for about 5 years. (we could not operate our ofice without it!!) We also have an internet presence (www.cynthiadykerealty.com.au) which is home pages and links to our listings. The home page (developed by me with Frontpage 2000 - any better suggestions for a novice?) and links to our listings. Both are hosted by our local industry body, the Real Estate Institute of Q…

I created a web page using Dreamweaver 3.0 and put it in the Web Folder of a G4 running Appleshare IP 6.3.3. When I connected to the page with a browser and attempted to add a new record to the database, I recieved the following error: "The server does not support the requested method or encoding." The method I had indicated in the html code was "post". Is the reason it isn't working a problem with FM Pro, Appleshare, or me? Thanks.

I have several files that I would like to have available to many people. In the past I have published them to the web with Web Companion. The interface via Internet Explorer and Netscape was not very user friendly. The browsers also did not display the files as they were displayed on a local computer. What is the recommended way to publish files so many people can use them? Can plug ins accomplish this task? Is direct access to the server the best way, if so what kind of license is required from Filemaker? I don't want to by hundreds of copies. Thanks,

OK!, So I have made my CDML pages and they work as well as I would expect them to in my localhost591 port. Next, I want to be able to do the same on internet right? Since I am trying to make the database available to the public. I noticed Dave had a problem about the host server guys not wanting to give him access to port 80 etc. I might face the same problem in the future. Could some one tell me in plain English the steps I may need to take (stuff info I will need to have handy) to face the hosting company? My understanding is... 1) Test the pages on local computer 2) Make sure the host server will have the program (FMP) and get the database running 24/7 3) I…

I was reading an article this morning on .asp pages etc and there was a part on checking on PWS. Suddenly I realized that when I had Windows 98, I actually had a folder that was called Personal Web Server.. but now I looked every where and there was nothing like it in my Windows ME, which came with my HP. I even searched through Windows Help, but nothing like PWS or Personal Web Server came up! Does any one know if this means that WinME does not have PWS at all? This also brings me to another thing that I noticed some time ago. When I had my FrontPage2000 on Win98, I could click on the preview in browser button within FP2000 and it would open my IE browser and show …

I am having problems with pages being served via FMP Unlimited on port 591 and not via IIS. This is causing the pages to load very slowly. (I am posting this here since the last place was too 'quiet') This refers to a very hot topic on how we can make live web pages easily that can display data from FMP on the web via mobile phone screen or internet enabled PDA in real-time. (Not FMP Mobile) I guess that most people must be aware of imode by now. If not, here is a basic explanation for you. (Also, I can give a list of English URLS's in anyone wants them) imode is the standard & name that NTT (Japanese Telecom) came up with for displaying website on mobile phones. No, not WAP but something most of us can put together. It uses a subset of HTML called cHTML (c=compact). Basically, mini sized web pag…

I have used file maker before and I am familiar with internet. I have just finished updating a database (about 1374 records), I would like these to be available to my clients on line for viewing or printing. How do I go about doing that? I have read the books but they seem to confuse me more than anything. I am willing to dedicate a computer for static page publishing. However, we are out in the country side the best we can have on internet is 26.4kb on 56kb modem!! Any kind of help and information will be appreciated and noted. Thanks

I am having difficulty setting up FMP 5 Unlimited on IIS 5 and would really appreciate some help. One of the main reasons for having difficulty is that FMP is not two-byte enabled so I have to use the Japanese version. This means that all the manuals etc., are in Japanese too. Bit too much to read and comprehend, so with excuses out of the way, here is our scenario followed by my questions: Scenario: We have a Win2k server with IIS 5 and FMP v5 Unlimited. In the FMP box there are two CD's. One is FMP v5, the other a Web Connector for IIS. Our IIS server is set with one IP address for two domains using host headers. "Domain-English" "Domain-Japanese" Both domains…

I'm updating a solution that is being served on our server. I have copies of the files locally. On my computer FM is set to no network and each file for the solution is set to no sharing. Nonetheless the external scripts all show the ip of the server. One of the files is being populated from a web page submission and if I have that file open locally the web submission no longer works. What the heck is going on here? Do I need to unplug the Mac from the network to work on these files? all help appreciated... n

I recently started up a new FM5 Unlimited server set-up. Over the weekend I got an enormous number of requests, all of the sort that I have pasted below. The sites that I serve are academic and should not be getting any hits. Are these robots? Hacks? Or is this what a typical visit looks like on the access log. I previously used FM4.1 and it either didn't have this feature or I was too stupid to use it. I have limited IP access to my subnet so I don't think any damage was done in any event. 203.73.193.54 - - [15/Dec/2001:07:51:52 -0600] "GET /scripts/root.exe?/c+dir HTTP/1.0" 404 1372 203.73.193.54 - - [15/Dec/2001:07:52:16 -0600] "GET /MSADC/root.exe?/c+dir HTTP/1…

(longish, tedious message, but please read to the end) I recently bagged my perfectly adequate FMPro4.1 server set-up to acheive the additional security benefits of running FMPro5u'ltd behind my Webstar server via the web server connector. I intended to use the IP restriction feature to limit requests to FM to only those passing through the server machine (see previous post). I was dismayed to find out that the IP restriction applied only to the client IP address, even though the FM access logger clearly specifies that it thinks all requests are coming from the IP of the server machine. (so why couldn't FMI make the IP restriction feature responsive to this information??…

To what extent has Filemaker 5.5 improved the online usability of scripts? I have a simple set of scripts/buttons which I would like to us for an online survey, but am wondering if I have to learn CDML or use Lasso or something or in fact whether or not Filemaker is the right application for this. Here's a basic summary of the script run by the buttons: Insert specified text into a specfic field Go to next record Go to specfic layout After going through 15 screens, the user would then come to a final screen which had the summary of the results. I would want multiple users to be using the database for the scripts at the same time. Can this be done without Lass…

We have recently moved our database to another computer and everything being completed, we cannot access the database on-line. Web Companion is enabled, TCP #s are correct. I have gone over multiple times the set up and still cannot find the problem. I read the program book till it is dog-eared. We moved the system from a Centris 610 Mac to a Power Mac 7500/100. We are using FileMaker Pro 4.0. I just don't know what else to check or where to go next. Any help would be much appreciated. This is used at a museum and the database is of the materials we have to distribute. Thank you so much in advance!!!

My department uses FMP5.0 unlimited webcompanion to do customed database publishing, it sits on PC NT4.0, port is 591. there is a firewall on the university network. there is no problem to access those webpages with blank access priviledge setting; it is also ok through university network, when the databases set access password for editing, but certain outside networks can not access those webpages, the message is "database is not open". I couldn't find out why this happened, any help will be very appreciated.

We are looking at putting some databases on the web for data entry by citizens on the internet and by employees via our intranet. Why would I want to purchase FM Server? I am planning on buying FM Unlimited, but am also wondering do I need FM Server or Developer? Also, can all these pages that are rendered be edited with Dreamweaver or something else? I need to change the Home Links, and do a few other items. Does Unlimited provide this? I am reviewing this FM Pro right now and do not know how to change the default HTML page that is rendered. Thanks!

Hi, I have created the following, a client page with a form . This gets sent to an asp page, which contains the following code. (strAll is the contents of the form). It works perfectly for updates to the FM pro 5.5. database. However, how can i detect an error (eg if the database isnt open on the remote server.) I have tried the following but it doesnt work: -------------------------------------------------------------- strAll = "http://10.32.52.75:591/FMPRO?-db=blah blah, etc Set ContentXML = Server.CreateObject("Microsoft.XMLDOM") ContentXML.validateOnParse=True If ContentXML.load((strAll)) then response.redirect "thanks.htm" else response.re…

I want to know if it is possible to stream data from a field using filemaker. For example with a combination of java or flash the information contained in a field could be streamed to the browser avoiding refreshig the web page. I think that using a served side solution it could be possible but in order to reduce this complication I ask for a solution on the client side. My first impression is that it could be possible and the hole filmaker communicaty can find a way to make this possible. I think that if we can find a way to do this, we can move filemaker into a next step of online data publishing. Thanks to all, and let's be creative to resolve this issue camcorp

I recently reconfig' my server to use webstar 4.0 and the web server connector on one machine, FMP5u'ltd on another. My main reason for doing this was my desire to use the IP restriction security feature to limit access to all IP's except those coming from the the web* server machine. Webstar is working; the WSC is working; I can access my databases when the IP restriction is turned off. When it is turned on it appears to be working when I access the database from a client with IP access. However, when I check the FM access log, it appears that all requests are coming from the IP of the server machine. If the access log thinks that all requests are coming from the server …

I represent a client who used filemaker pro, and the person who setup a database system for them used Lasso. The only thing is that the webhosting is very expensive with pointnspace. My question is Could not filemaker be used directly to upload to html templates? to change info on the site? Without having to create my own server cannot filemaker upload and use a regular webhost? If not what about switching to something such as PHP.. Any info would be appreciated... the site is www.new-chapter.com the links that use data base are products and also where to buy. Hi. I'd like to use SSI within WSC-served HTMl pages. By SSI I mean real ones such as #echo, #fsize, #show/hide, etc--not [FMP-Include/CurrentIP], etc. Is it possible? The main purpose of this is to display the filesize (#fsize) of an image file. Thanx for any help. Ch. [ December 11, 2001: Message edited by: Charly Playe ]
