I'm looking into alternatives to MS Access for DB-enabled websites. I curently use UltraDev to build asp pages and ODBC connections. Can anyone confirm using Ultradev and FMP successfully? Am I right in assuming that once completed, I only need to recreate the DSN on my ISP in order for web pages to 'talk' to an FMP DB? Do I need Developer to use FMP with UltraDev? Any help/tips/advice would be greatly appreciated.

It appears I am having buffer overflow problems with Web Companion v6 for Mac using FileMaker 5.0 on an Apple G4, OS 9.1. Every few hours Web Companion ceases to serve although FileMaker file sharing functions normally. Reloading FileMaker fixes the problem for few hours. I suspect it is caused by Code Red. When a few of our clients click on a there holdings link which calls up a listing of all there holdings, there are presented with the error messsage "Connection Reset By Peer" My First thought was it was a browser issue and suggested they upgrade - they are all using now Internet Explorer 5.5SP2 - and the errors are still happening. Secondly I thought it was the amount of records being displayed but this now seems not to be the case as this was happening to people with one or thirty records. I have a registration facility for my users, where I want them to enter a username, password and their email-address. How can I test whether the username they enter was registered before? I was thinking about using some kind of redirect-page which searches for the username and if it doesn exist, will register the new username. But I don't know how to remember the password and the email-address that were entered on the first page. I could store all the details in cookies, but is there another possibility? Some script in Filemaker that sends an error-message if the field-entry is a duplicate?

I am running Webstar 4.0 and using the filemaker web server. Running Filmaker pro unlimited 5.0v2 on a seperate machine. I'm getting an error when I add a record through the internet that has about 4 pages worth of text. Can anyone provide a URL that points to a hosted FileMaker database that is open to the public? I mean a really excellent one. I would love to see some examples of what is possible so I can in turn show my supervisor and get funds to make our databases Web-accessible. I'm setting up a simple database of images to be served to the web by Filemaker (I'm using version 4.0). The images are held in container fields, but do not display when viewed via the Web. Instead, a number is shown in place of the image (it seems to correspond to the number of the record, although I'm not certain) Information in other fields displays OK, and (following a suggestion I spotted elsewhere in the FM Forums) I can get a link to the relevant image to work. I'm using Instant Web publishing, and a windows based system (NT4). Cheers.

I am using FM pro 5.5. for multiable databases. Some of which my company needs to access for different cities. I setup web companion as well as the webport, the plug in that comes with FM unlimited. This was originally setup using FM 5.0 and at time, it was very slow but it worked. Now you can still access the databases form the web but none of the changes are saving that are made from the Web. Has anyone got an idea why this may be happening? Also is their a better/faster way I can host files so my users in San Francisco and Minneapolis and access them? Although I think I understand some of FM, I am obviously missing something. I have made a database with text and photo fields in each record. Obviously, I can print my found set in the layout I have chosen. How do I send the same found set and layout via email? I get junk email all the time that looks like they have done exactly this. Hi, this may be a very ignorant question to ask, but I'm not proud. Using Filemaker Server running on Linux, could I take an FMP file from a Mac (OS9) and easily transfer it to a Linux web server. Currently I'm hosting a site on a Linux Server and using a port through to a Mac set up to serve an FMP database, but this is Slooow. I'm wondering if running FMP Server on the Linux server would speed this up and still allow the physical movement of the updated database from the admin's Mac to the Linux Server. A few people, including myself, have been having some date problems. We have been using Javascript to work-around these problems. However, I believe I have found the source, not the solution, of my problems. I am using FMP5.5 on OS X. Any files which have been created with 5.5 don't have the problems. Only files created with earlier versions are having the format problems. Another observation is that with the older files I am able to select 'Use System Format' in the 'Format' menu, whereas with the new files that menu is not accessible. Oh well, back to the 'bleeding' edge to discover more features. All the best. Garry

We have been using Javascript to do this. Firstly we created calculated fields which split the date into day, month and year. Then use pop-ups for each; stop mistakes from the users! Hi, I have a question...I just setup a database with 4 pulldown bars, such that the first pulldown dictates the second pulldown and so on...ie. You have a movie database, and you select Genre in one pulldown, Movie Titles in another, and Actors in another. My problem is that i have the relational stuff working perfectly, I just don't know how to get it to work over the web. I'm having a problem with the results I'm retrieving from a search form. I have the form set up to where the user can search for an event by date and and location. Right now I have a dynamic drop down list with three locations. The problem is that somehow the data is not being filtered correctly. When I search for the FIRST location with a particular date, the results appear correctly. However, when I do a search with the second or third location, the results are frequently mixed up. For instance, I'll search for location2 with a date that location2 is NOT assigned to in the db. But the results will show location3 with that date, which is not what i asked for. (If …

I have a simple input form for a web survey. The client wants the users to be able to go back to incomplete surveys and fill in missing info. I've got it so it will find the original record and bring up the web input form once again, but it does not display the information that has already been input in the associated fields. I just noticed that if I display Text in BREAK-Format on my website, all '' in the records are being eliminated. They just aren't displayed on screen! But I want the Backslash to be displayed. Is there any way to get around this?

I am setting up a search engine that links to a secure FTP site. when the user clicks on search, a web security database prompt comes up and asks for username and password. My problem is that the information returned in the search needs to be linked to the FTP site(without having to use another security prompt) the link that gets sent to the browser should look like this ftp://username [email protected]. Forgive me...this problem is so basic, but I am so frustrated and I cannot figure out what's wrong! I am just starting out with the Web companion. I've been trying to test a search form. The search page appears to work ok, but when I submit, I get the following error message. Database Not Open Unable to process your request because the database "event.fp3" is not open. etc, etc, This database IS open! I have this situation: My Web server on Mac G3-266 with: Webstar 4.4 Lasso 3.6.6 FMP 4.1 (normal) ----------- 1 FMP 4.1 for Windows on PC for updating FMP serve a very large db with 2 small relational files, with script, schedule, etc. There is a client with FMP 4 for windows that update the FMP 4 for Mac on Web via TCP/IP and Lasso sharing the db on Web. One question I have been working around since I started Filemaker Web publishing and which really starts to bother me: Did anybody come up with a way of displaying the content of Filemaker records on a splash-page? So let's say I enter http://www.myDomain.com and the default-page comes up. I want to have FMP-records on that site. Now with CDML I can't do that, because I have to call the records in the URL string. The only thing I could think of is to immediately redirect the user from the default-page to the FMP-URL string. I would know how to do it with ASP and Access, but I don't know how to solve the problem with Filemaker and WebStar-Server. I am willing to le…

I have setup a database entered all the data and now wish to make the database accessible online but not editable so I am going to use the Web Security Database. Does anyone know why I am getting an error message "specified module not found" when I go into web connector administration and add a second host and then try to pull up a page for that host? e.g. first host works fine, but when I add a second domain name host and select which files are hosted by that host and try to call up a web page specific to that new host domain name, it gives this error. The on only way it works is to call it by 'firsthost.com/secondhostname/FMPro?....'

I am looking into SSL servers and I noticed in FileMaker Unlimited they say: Included in FileMaker Pro 5 Unlimited are FileMaker Pro 5 and the FileMaker Web Server Connector to integrate FileMaker Pro with robust Web Servers to provide increased performance, security and SSL (secure socket layer) support to your web solutions. I can't find any mention in the help of SSL. Can anyone tell me where I can find info on FileMaker SSL and what the "Web Server Connector" is?

I'm running Filemaker Unlimited on a Win2000 machine with ISS and don't have any other machines to use as dedicated Filemaker servers or in a RAIC. Will I gain any performance increases from installing the web connector? I read somewhere that you can improve performance by running multiple separate installations of Filemaker. Does this have to be done over separate machines, or can you do it all on the one box? Thanks.

I have a calculation field that when other fields have text in them, my calculation field get the letters "AR" inputted. When those other fields contain nothing then my "AR" field contains nothing. It works out fine for my web page because "AR" shows up only when it's supposed to. BUT, I would like to somehow make it stand out more, possibly have a graphic in there in addition to the AR. What is necessary to add a second domain to fmp pages? Example: machine.com/newdomainfolder/FMPro?-db=...... works for as many as you want, but newdomain.com/FMPro?-db=..... causes an error of "specified module not found". The fmp/web/newdomain folder is webshared as FMPro to the new domain just like the web folder is webshared to the machine.com. Would just like to have new domains show their own domains instead of redirecting to machine.com/domainfolder.... Any ideas? Thanks.

Does anyone know for certain which is the more taxing on the system and filemaker when going from one page to another? Using thte -recid and -edit, or if I'm carrying around the orderID as the 'token and using orderID and -find. They both allow thte same effect, but I would rather use the one that doesn't tax filemaker. We just put up a FM site for a large company who sent emails to approx. 200 employees telling them what time it would be live,,, YEP... within ten minutes filemaker stopped responding, files had to be recovered. Hello. I'm getting in a state trying to keep certain records from being shown through web-companion... I have a field called "searchable", which defaults to 0 and can be changed to 1, only by the administrator. When people search the database on the web I would like only records with this field value set to "1" to be displayed. Sounds simple enough, but when the search form is sent, the search criteria always seems to be OR. Ie, I am trying to get the query to be in the form of: Show all records that field Searchable = "1" AND (field Name = "john" OR field Age = "25" OR......) etc. Really grateful for any help!

Two ways: 1. FMP validation on the field for 'not empty' condition. (define,options, validation) This way is easiest but requires web transactions to and from server for validation - potential bandwidth issue. 2. Javascript validation in the web page. Performed on user machine and transaction only occurs when form has been validated.

Well here is what I am facing! I have an extensice HTML form that needs to allow users to post images into my FMP db. I have been working on this for a few weeks, and as far as I can tell FMP cannot handle the input. The form command I am using is: <input type="file" name="myFMPfield"> which displays the standard file location dialog when clicked. I can choose the file, and the correct path appears in the text field but FMP will not accept the input! Help!!!!

Hello O.k this may seem silly, but I need to ask. I have a quotes dbase (fmpro of course) and I want to make it available on our web site. I have got a handle on CDML and lasso, but I have not decided on which to use. As the site will not be heavily trafficed. perhaps 100 a day at most. My dilema is how to set up webstar and fmpro, and which fmpro to use. I have unlimited and the server version. As I understand it if I use the unlimited only about 10 IP's can visit in a 12 hour period. now this is not enough, that's using it on it's own without webstar and just the built in web companion. I'm designing a FileMaker Pro database that I'd like to put on the web using the enclosed Web Companion. Most web hosting sites that I've found prefer using Lasso 3.6. Does this matter? Is it true that unlimited is not yet upto 5.5. I am extremely annoyed that they have released the new multi threaded web companion with the 10 ip address limited 5.5 and not for unlimited. What do people who publish web sites that are limited to 10 users every 12 hours need with a multi threaded web companion. Sure. Get rid of the textarea tag and just use the [FMP-field: Answer] data element. This will display the data, but it will no longer be a form element and can't be edited. If editing is required, a button could load a web page for editing - with the textarea tag.

Hi, I have a search page with 5 different criterias (one of them is a popup). On the results page, I want to show these values in Text Fields (& 1 popup field). However, the SetCookie, -Token (beyond -Token.0) don't take up the values, and the FMP-FindFieldItem does not let me specify the value into fields so that the user can modify the search. On that I have a link to a page where a user can enter information. The link works fine, but when I try to enter info and hit the add record button, I get a message saying the browser can't access FM on my harddrive. I have the file open. Hi, I've got this list of items that users search through, and then save to a list. This creates data in two files. Firstly, the List Master where with the current username it creates a list with a title as defined by the user. Secondly, it takes information to a List Items file where the searched items that are clicked on get carried to when the user hits the save button at the bottom of the page. Sounds easy? Well, it was for me in FMPro where I just keep omitting the items, and then importing them to a new list. Hello, I'm working on a client's site that has, until now, been set up with FileMaker 5 Unlimited, IIS web server, Web Server Connector and Liquid Audio server on the same Windows NT box. Because FileMaker uses up 99% of the system resources every time it is accessed, we are moving it to a dedicated machine. The other day we hooked up the new FileMaker server, disabled FileMaker on the web server, and tried to configure Web Server Connector (on the web server) using the <IP Address>/FMPro?config call, as documented. Hi, I'm a FP newbee, forced to learn this by my boss. I have set up a system DSN with FP ODBC driver, then I wrote a test Perl script to try to open a table and print content to screen. The sql looks like this: SELECT * FROM [specialists_Database.FP5] returned error is: Error: "-151[FileMaker][ODBC FileMaker Pro driver][FileMaker Pro]Connect failed10" Could anybody see the posible problem here? Does anyone know why a message of "specified module could not be found" would be displayed when I add a virtual host to the web connector configuration? The only domain I can use to access filemaker webs is the original machine domain. Web Connector configuration tells me that the new host is added and I have selected files, but when you type in the url with the virtualhost.com/FMPro?..... the message is:"specified module could not be found" Thanks.

I have a bit of a strange problem. One of my pages enables you to log into a portfolio service, these details are checked against a FileMaker database. The problem I am having is that a few clients are using iMacs and are unable to access the service, they enter there client code and password and the machine just sits there. They say this happens on the secure and non secure link. The strange bit is they can access the sample data and as far as I can see the coding is the same. Hi, I'm trying to figure out how to go to a related record via an HTML page served up by Web Companion (custom publishing). I can, of course, put the related data on a layout in the first file, and vie it through the '-lay' command. Problem is, that the related record has its own related data that I can only view if I go to the related record in the 2nd file. I've tried the "-Script" command, but whether I reference the first or second file in the "-lay" & "-DB" commands, I get an error. Any suggestions?

We have a database that's quite large (large in the sense that it has about 20 fields or so). What we need to be able to do is to print this database in Table View (headers and all). We have tried different ways of going about it but nothing has worked. This database is currently web-enabled using FileMaker web companion. If we use CDML, will we be able to solve this problem? Or would we need to buy a plug-in for this? Appreciate your suggestions.

So I have installed the Web Security database for my database called 'mmarts_forum'. If the user tries to mae a new entry, he is being asked by Filemaker for a username and a password. Two things: 1. How can I ask for the username and password with a regular form instead of the pre-build option Filemaker gives me? 2. I noticed that after entering the username and password into the pre-build option the first time, I am not being asked for it again. As the website will be used by several people using the same computer, I have to find a way to force them to enter their username/password for every entry they make. Thanks for your help!

Okay. I'm interested in creating an online forums, very similar to FMForums. I am wondering if it is at all feasible to use FileMaker to do this. I am running FMP5 Unlimited. Does anyone know how I can implement remote administration or open and close databases via a web browser in order to limit the load on my server while using WC?

I was wondering...If you are hosting FM Databases online, and turn on the log file option so that Filemaker generates a log file of actions from the web. Does writing to this log file put any kind of hit to performance of the database/web companion? I know if there are only a few users on at a time there may not be much of a performance hit, but what if there are a lot of users on clicking at a time?

I know there are a view posts on this topic around already, but they never answered my qestion. The problem I am having is how to make sure that nobody can view the password/user-database? If I use CDML to get the information and compare the users entries, anybody who has a look at the source-code will see the name of the database and the name of the fields and therefor be able to view the contents of the database. Or am I wrong there? I know how to set up access privileges, but I can't really password-protect the view-privilege, as I need them to compare the password and username entered by the user.

Can anyone recommend web authoring software that is particularly well-suited for use with FileMaker? I want to create a web site that, among other things, uses FileMaker's layouts and allows data entry. I think I'm going to need more than what the web companion provides. I'm on the Windows platform, using FileMaker Pro v5.03. I have a copy of Adobe PageMill v3.0, but it doesn't seem to have any obvious close ties with FileMaker. I'd welcome any advice. I'm moderately capable with FileMaker, but a raw beginner with web publishing. Ultimately, my site will not be hosted on a Mac. Thanks, Keith Silva
