FileMaker Legacy fp3 and fp5

I deleted my other two post, please forgive the doble post. Are there any concerns I should have to upgrade from 5.5 to 6.0? I have heard that some layouts do not upgrade well. Also, does anyone know if there will be a newer version any time soon? Why upgrade to 6 if a 6.5 is in the works? Salesman PS: Again, please forgive the double post!

When printing to the avery labels is there a way to tell filemaker to only print to certain stickers because I am printing addresses out onto the stickers daily and I don't use up the full sticker sheet. So I would like to be able to print to the remaining stickers the next day.

Hello guys.. A few newbie questions which needs to be answered. I've been given a project which requires me to continue from the company's existing filemaker database (already up and running for quite a while). But i'm unable to go to the layout mode after i open up the program, any idea on how i can access to the layout mode, and how do i disable the layout mode after i have completed my form. I've been using the titecase option for text so that it capitalizes the first letter of every word I type in a field. Is there a way to set it so that the server will automatically do it for you when you type in a field instead of setting the option on every computer with filemaker.

Hi, probably already answered a hundred times before - but I can't find them -( Currently FM unlimited connects to an external FM Server hosting some databases via the web compagnion; now obviousely I have to expand direct access to FM Server with FM Pro (VLA) via Windows Terminal Server. FM Unlimited AND the FM Pro (VLA) Version is planned to be installed on the SAME server opening the files from the external FM server box again - are there any problems or tricky steps to be considered? Hi, I need to get Filemaker Pro 6.0 onto two Mac and was wondering whether the installer allows you to install on two different machines with the same license, or, like so many of the newer installers, it coordinates things over the net to make sure you can't use the license on more than one machine.

First let me qualify that I am new at using FileMaker. We have a "small" FileMaker system with 20 files. Of which none are large, one has 22,000 records and the second has 10,000 records. The problem is accessing any of the data takes a very long time. I have read about people accessing hundreds of thousands of rows of data in seconds. Is this due to the speed of their hard drive? We have FM server set up on a Windows XP Pro machine with no other applications running on it. The machine has a 40 gig drive running at 5400 rpm. Would a 7200 rpm drive make a difference? I know that FM recommends SCSI but that is not possible right now. Thanks for the help!!!

I'm a school "tech guy", and we have a school wide database.. Most of our "client" machines (all Macs) are running FM5.0. I'm beginning to upgrade some machines to OS X, and want to use the OS X native FM 6. However, we can't afford to move to FM6 for ALL machines at once. Here's my question; Can I develop (that is, change layouts, fields etc) a database on FM 6, to be served by our Filemaker Server to CLIENTS running Filemaker 5 AND Filemaker 6? I would not be utilizing any features that 6 has over 5 (that I am aware of) until we've COMPLETELY moved to FM6 in a year (maybe two... depends on budget...). I would like to force template text (typed onto the Layout) to create a new page when that text exceeds a limit down the page. This is necessitated by an itemized list part that will vary from one item to many. Below the itemized list area, I have a Trailing Grand Summary part that contains calculation fields for total, tax, etc. Following that is a disclosure statement, closing and client's signature and date area. I could easily place the text in a text field except there is no tool that can draw a line for the client's signature and date in the (Browser) text field. Hi, How can I find installation code of FM 5 for MAC 9.2 ?? I have bunch of client FileMakers, and there's this one Mac 9.2 machine I need to format and reload. I don't remember which physical copy of FileMaker is on it, but I want to load it after I format the drive. Otherwise i will be getting network errors, like "max no of clients is on the network, etc." In OS X I think it's in the Preferences folder, but in OS 9 I don't see it. Thanks

In Filemaker (5.5), is it possible to create an element in the layout that is "draggable" by the user? I have a image (of a map) in a container field and would like users to place a dot on where they would like to go. Can anyone provide a workaround solution or some advice? Cheers!

Hi All, I installed Webconnector to a Mandrake 9.2 with Apache. I compiled the necessary module for apache. Then start the apache and Webconnector with no problem. But when I enter the 127.0.0.1:8888, I can not receive any thing from web browser. I dont know what is the problem. I can not see any error in log file. I'm working for a manufacturing company that has an Oracle based business information system (ERP). The ERP system does many things but falls short in certain areas. What I would like to do is use FileMaker to fill in the gaps. We would like to track a lot of information about our "installed base" (machinery that we have sold). I made a database with a lot of pictures, now I want to put a part of it on CD. When I select the records which I don't need and delete them, the database doesn't get any smaller, because it's not checking for unused blocks.. Why not? When I make the db completely empty it is checking for unused blocks and the size decreases dramatically...

I would like to insert text into a report based on a field value. For example: I want to place a merge field onto a report that is enclosed in parentheses. If that field is not filled out, I don't want the parentheses to show up. How can I insert the parentheses only when there is a value entered that field that the merge field refers to?

Hi I have a bit of a problem involving a Mac LC 475 and a FM3 database. I need to get the FM3 database off the LC 475 (running OS 7.1) and onto a Dual Processor G4 running OS X and FMP6. I've tried to put the database onto a floppy disk, but there seems to be a problem with the formatting of the disk - all I get when I open up in FM6 is rubbish. Can I transfer the file off the LC onto an older PowerBook (maybe a 3400) running OS 7.6 or 8, upload the file to a web server, and then download it to my G4. I really need some help here as the database is critical, and converting it to FM6 is very important. Thanks.

The contents of the lists will frequently be edited and the lists are repeatedly consulted or printed out. The lists need individual titles that are not stored within the database. I have created a catalog where the products are sorted into lets say 10 categories so that we have a list with category headers before each list of product that falls into that category ex:SPROCKETS SprocketA SprocketB SprocketC WIDGETS Widgets A Widgets B The problem that I am running into is that I end up having 7 pages for items that should fit on 5. At the end of some of the pages there can be up to 3" of empty space, then on the next page it starts the new category that in some cased should fit on the page before. For example, if the value in the first pop-down is 1 i'd like the second pop-down to show the values of value list A. I end up doing some repair/upgrade work on some of my commercial databases from my home. I connect via TCP/IP over the internet using the IP address of the FM Server. I end up late at night doing quick fixes and such when the users are off. Question - there are times I have to add fields, for example a calculation field and it takes FOREVER to add the field after I write the calc. I expect this, no problems. But when there's 3,000 or more records this can make for a long night of watching the hour glass. So... I want to make a video database and I need that each video is visible through FileMakerPro. I found that per each record a jpg of the poster frame of the video it's stored within the database so it raises 15-20KB for each record. My first idea was to held up to 150000 records but then I realised that the database would be more than 2 Gigs in size, and this is the limit of FileMaker! Is there any way to store de movies and make them watchable throug FMPro without having to store a jpg for each movie?

I clicked on a certain file that holds the listing of all the company's Quoting info (so, a very important file) and the file "crashed"; that is, the file did not open and the FileMaker program was shutdown. I need to enter data into a text field which, once all the data has been entered will be copied and pasted into another application which doesn't support importing or stylised text. I have seen an example file (somewhere) that used "shift-clicking" field names to show a sort of tool tip style of help box for that field. I use FX.php class from http://www.iviking.org This class is used to talk to FM Unlimited to fetch the FMP data. To be specific, File A is a movie database with information about particular movies. I'm not certain where to post this question - it's fairly elementary, but something I'm unable to figure out. I use FMP Developer 6 to develop a DB being served off a MAC to both Mac and Windows machines. In all layouts of data entry, I have a close button that goes to a main menu that indicates the user needs to go to FILE and then QUIT. However, every time I access the files on the server and open them up to make a change or two, or just run reports, a text box opens saying that the file wasn't closed properly - no matter the file. I keep getting 'field in use by another user error' I'm serving up a FileMaker database with lots of shared users and when people are on different records but on the same layout and inputing data through global fields. (some of these globals have dropdown catogary and sub-catogory fields when the sub catogary fields choice is dependant on the first catogory field selection). And I then get a script in a related database to create a new record and set field the globals into this new record. (i'm using a seperate globals database) any ideas how to avoid this problem?

Hello, I'm having a problem with our order database. Two people are using the db. Every time one of the 2 wants to create a new order record a counter is increased and the order number field of the new record gets an automatically assigned order number. Works fine, except that every now and then (once in a month or so) they get two times the same ordernumber. I've already explained them that when they create a new order, they have to make sure the first field is filled in, and they have to switch to the next field (to make sure the new record is really written). I was given a database by my company to add a layout to. The database is for purchase orders and it goes back several years. My company wants a layout created in which they can view all the items purchased sorted by the name of the company purchased from with a total for each company. There are 4 fields (company_name, date, total, and item). The summary of the total would add up all the TOTAL fields for each company (this is how much each purchase amounted to). Hello, I'm trying to import data from a very old FM 2.5 database. Everything seems to import fine except for auto enter info such as the creation and modification dates. Whether I open the 2.5 file in 6, or import the data from 2.5 into a new 6 file, the data still doesn't show up. Any ideas? Thanks, Andrew

I am interested in implementing the technique of saving "deleted" records into another database to track these. I have 15 separate dbs in my solution - is it better to have a "deleted" database for each of these or somehow combine a single database of all the db's deleted records? I have one layout, with many calculationfields. It's for calculating prices for cardboard packaging. Choises for different machinery, printed or not, etc. etc. Is there a possibility in FM to make first all the choices and then start the calculations? Now the screen is being build-up (very slow because of the calculations I think) everytime one choice is made, and also when you leave the screen(layout) and come back to it again later.

I have a FileMaker pro 6 DB that has 30 or so fields in each record, one of which is used to print a badge number (a number field that auto enters a serial number that increase by one with each new record). I need to find a way for the users to blank all the fields in a record except for the BadgeNumber field -- is there an easy way to do this? After I had to reinstall Filemaker Pro 6, it now takes about 60 seconds before the prog starts. It seems that it takes this time initializing. Before I reinstalled, I also removed everything out the registry. Strange thing is, that also a compiled DB takes that time to startup. Anyone a suggestion for this? Thanks, John

I am working on Developing a database for a nonprofit I work at - and here is my problem: I need to generate a unique, random seven digit number for each member. The number will be the primary key (match) of the database. I need the number to be generated for each new record so that it appears as soon as the opens. Some of my concerns are making sure that no one receives the same number. That this is done within filemaker - I don't want to have to make a list of numbers and then assign it to someone manually. Hello, I recently took over the computer maintenance tasks of a small company, about five people running filemaker to keep track of advertising contacts. One of my jobs is to merge all the filemaker documents into a master doc, which seemed easy enough, but I soon encountered a bit of a nightmare. First off, these guys are running FM 2.5. Second, and more importantly, the old computer guy who designed the database left on bad terms and password protected the database so layouts can't be changed. I have a text field(field1)that is setup as check boxes with a difined list content as A B C D. I have a second calc field that has the values selected in Field 1. ie If A C & D are checked in Field 1 then the result in The calc fieled is A C D. My problem is that the value in the calc field are on seperate lines & will only appear if I extend the the field downwards. Is there a way to fornmat the values to read across my calc field seperated by commas. Steve

This is more like warning than question. But maybe I am wrong. I can post to our FMU 5 text up to 64k through WC directly on port 591, but port is not issue. Because on the same CPU is running IIS on port 80, we are using Web Server Connector, which is working sort of OK. IMHO it is the worst software from FMI. Now, through IIS -- WSC -- Web Companion gets only post up to 3k in length. Maybe someone knows more or this will save someone gray hairs.

I use SMTPit for my eMailing. I want to put all HTML documents into one folder so when I click the 'Select HTML" button you are always taken directly to the HTML folder. We have many offices and I don't want the operators to search around for the right folder. I need them to be taken right to the HTML folder. Thanks for your help, Bill

I have a Drug database that we will be updating on a monthly basis however I need to update this data but be able to see the previous month's data. Any ideas on the best way to attack this problem. My thoughts are maybe have a field with the currect update version ie, month but this will be a rather large database and I don't know how this will affect performance. My guess is probably close to 250,000 records x 24 could be quite large. Any ideas

I have a couple files (fp3 and fp5) that were deleted on our server. I used data recovery software to get the deleted files back, but they are all corrupted, well most of the are, and beyond the point of using the "recover" feature in FM. If there any other option I have besides sending the files out to FM Disaster recovery for $100 a file?

Is there a way that I can disable the mouse scrollwheel so users don't inadvertently switch records? I read somewhere that if you hide the status area, it should prevent the user from switching records, but I could swear that it's happened to me even when it's hidden. Anyone else have this problem? Is there a way I can disable users from using the 'Window' menu to switch between files. My user_db.fp5 file is just a list of the users and their passwords (I have a simple login script), and the users shouldn't have permission to access it. The only thing I can think of for them not getting into anything is locking the status bar on that file, and having a startup script for the file default to a blank layout? Hey there, I have in my hands copies of filemaker files, made with version 1.0 on Macintosh (yes, ancient stuff , I must convert those to the most current version. The question is how to do that? Because of my optimistic nature I tried to open them with the latest Windows version but it refused to do so, so it seems I would have to do this incrementally, from version 1.0 -> ?? -> ?? -> current (Windows). I want to insert a currency field in several different Form Letter layouts and have it print out to the second decimal place. Problem is if the field contains a value such as 200.40, it prints out as $200.4 instead of $200.40. How can I resolve this problem and still use a merge field?

Is there a known/proven way to find a corrupt layout? Using Mac OS X and FM Dev 6.

Am using FM4 & 4.1 on win 2000 server & 6 users, operating real estate system. Use it for recording properties, photos, produce window cards, strip lists, preparing contracts, sales reports etc GREAT!. We have a simple window display rnning on a screen at night with a simple script behind it that steps through the properties and displays photos and text. Works fine. Want to go upmarket and in our new office (in by christmas) have say 4 displays (multiple video cards on a PC) with 4 separate "scripts" or whatever running showing 4 different properties at a time. Hi, we have a just fine working solution with Webstar 4, Lasso 3 and FmUnl. 6 on one eMac under 0s 9.2.2 running. Well, nice but awfully slow when more than one task happends. Now we want to change to the descibed solution with 2 OSX configured (via webconnector) Macs. Any comments on this? How much can such a system speed up under real world testing in comparison to the single eMac/OS9 configuration? Is there really a notible speed gain when using two machines?

What do I need on the command-line to automatically open a certain file when starting FileMaker Pro? I'm looking to use Windows task scheduler to open a file at a certain time of day so it can start the today calculations before I come in. I also need to know if/how I can pass a password for that file too. Thanks.

We have numerous databases. We are running FMP 5.3 (recently changed from 4). We also recently created several relational databases. The problem is that the relationships keep changing? Let me try to explain. We have a relationship setup on a College/Dept File and a Student Record File to say "match the "academic degree abbreviation field on the Student Record File (SRF) to the "degree abbreviation" field on the College/Dept file. Has anyone tested this out to see if it is more stable? I read through the forum and can't see having to reboot the FMU daily to prevent it from crashing. Also, I've been manually opening the database files every time the server needs to be rebooted. Is there any way to automate this? With the standalone, I could put aliases in the Startup folder. With FMU, I have to open the files via the "Open Remote" menu. Any suggestions?

I know that this issue has already been discussed on this forum, but perhaps there have been some new developments that can help me with my problem. I run FMU 6 on two old Pentium II machines (one with Windows NT, one with Windows 2000) and more and more frequently FMU takes up all resources, rendering the computer unusable (more so on Win2000 than NT). Restarting FM helps, but only for a limited time. I cannot imagine using slower computers, albeit such a solution has been proposed for this problem. I have a stand alone in a customer site where the screen seems to Zoom to 150% on it's own. There is no script or button available for the user to do this.(that I know of) I saw it myself and one specific layout was enlarged and another wasn't. If you exit and re-enter it's fine. I added a button with a script to set zoom level to 100% as a band-aid. It happened again and my button didn't help. Does anybody know what could cause this? Larry

Hi, Sorry for such an elementary post but I'm completely new to FileMaker. In any case, I'm using FileMaker Pro 6.0v1 for Windows and am a bit startled that there doesn't appear to be any way to "undo" the last action (i.e., if you accidentally delete something, most programs will have an "undo" button or command that will undo the most recent action). So, does FileMaker not have this? Or, by chance is it availabe in a newer version? I did notice there's an update to 6.0v4 so I didn't know if this might have this feature. I'm simply terrified of deleting an entire database and not being able to retrieve it. Thanks for your help.
