Hello, I recently installed Filemaker Server 8. I have extended privleges set as well as file ownerships set to read/write. Yet when I connect to the server, the hosted database is read remotely as read only. The server has the databse listed as "normal" and I am logging in remotely with a full access account. If I stop the server, the database is no longer read only. Any advice?

This is probably a naive question, but I've searched the posts and I can't find the answer, and since I've never used the server version... If I have a FM server database and have scripts that invoke applescripts (or VBscripts) where does the script run, on the server or on the FM client machine? If we had a server database of 2-4GB, how much data gets transfered across our LAN?

Here is an error log that i am trying to troubleshoot... it just will not start up. Nov 24 12:50:34 server.local INFO: Starting FileMaker Server 5.5 on Mac OS X ... Nov 24 12:50:35 server.local INFO: TCP/IP network initialization failed; the TCP/IP address is already in use or an address could not be obtained. Nov 24 12:50:35 server.local INFO: FileMaker Server quitting! Network initialization failed; an unexpected error occurred. Nov 24 12:50:36 server.local INFO: Shut down. I have been having some trouble on setting up a Filemaker server access from different part of our LAN. Accessing Filemaker server is ok in one part of the building but unable to be seen from another part of building. We run DHCP across our network and I have been advised that there isn't a LAN issue as I can ping the server from point of access but I cannot see the server when I open filemaker and try the remote access button any ideas?

Hi, I am the new one and also quite new to FM. I will support about 100 FM-Server installations. Most run very well but some, the bigger ones, complain about long responstimes. One is with 30 Clients. And it lasts about 1 minute (50 to 70 Secs) to switch from one to another fp5-file to display it. What is a typical or maximum usercount? FM Server is running on W2K-Server 100Mbit Ethernet TCP/IP the clients mostly are XPPro Systems. Hardware is max 3 years old or younger. What could I check? Where are bottlenecks, enhanced by bad parametersettings? Thanks in advance Bogdan

Hi, I've got a FM Server 7.03 Windows XP, on a local network. I would like to access it, from outside, with a simple and secure solution. I've made some tests with Hamachi (VPN peer to peer) on 2 simples PC and simple FM7. It works great. My question is is it possible, or reasonable, to install Hamachi on the PC runing the FM Server ? Or the rule is really to not install any other software on the server ? What do you think ?

I'm serving a DB with Server 8. I opened it directly on the host computer (using 8.5 advanced) and made changes to a layout. I am swimming deeper into the Server 8.5 waters and am having some encouraging results. My solution is hosted on server 8.5 in my production facility on a very zippy Windows XP machine. The only real problem I am having is that when inputting orders on my remote client at my retail store, it is a little sluggish. My thought is to have a local file at the store with which the rep can do the order input, then import the records to the main table at the host. My question is how would Server react if for instance someone on the network at the production facility was inputting an order, and the rep at the store was to initiate the import into the same table? Would the store b…

Hi! We're a small company that's plannning on expanding from 4 users to maybe 8 or 9. We'll be working from different locations (cities) here in Sweden. The database consists of some 4.000 posts (just text, no media). We're 100% Mac-based. What I do know is that we'll need a static IP, but we're unsure what's suitable for us - will an Xserve, hosted by an internet provider, be overkill, or is it possible to make it work by using a fairly new, dedicated computer and a service like no-ip.com or dyn.org? Will that be reliable? Any suggestions are welcome! regards Anders

I connect to FileMaker from a remote location. Occasionally (once a day on average), the connection is lost. If I attempt to reconnect immediately, I get a Key Conflict error, and it says something along the lines of "this key is in use by <>". I have to wait a few minutes for the server to realize the original connection was lost. Why can't it figure out that I'm connecting from the same computer?? Any way to force it to check? I'm thinking of getting a 10seat license to replace my individual copies. Would that solve my problem (as I assume there's just 1 key that allows 10 connections?).

I just upgraded our server from FMS 7 to 8, and our clients from 7 to 8.5. A problem that has shown up is that when we try to go to Script Maker on our Companies database, it is greyed out. Now I tried opening the non-hosted Companies database file, and it seems to be functioning perfectly fine. However, when I copy this file into the hosted files folder, and host it from the server, when I try to access it I cannot get into Script Maker. There is a login/password associated with the database, but I use the same one in both cases. One thing that might be related is that I had to recover and compact the database in order to get the server to open it. I tried…

Hi, I have a huge problem. The DB crashed even the empty clone is not working anymore. As soon as I insert a new record Filemaker freeze. The DB was created in a non relationnal way by a non computer guy in 1994 and was growing since them with some added features... It was working until last week, but now boom! No more. The server can't close this file and we always need to search for unused blocks... Can someone tell what can I do to fix that? Anyhelp would be appreciated Nick

Apologies if this has been looked at before, but I couldn't find it anywhere. We use the WPE for XML publishing, passing queries with various data for searching and sorting etc. An example of this is for current news items on our website, with a querystring like this to get the three latest news items... &published_date=10%2F31%2F2006&published_date.op=lte&type=latestnews&type.op=eq&-max=3&-sortfield.1=published_date&-sortorder.1=descend&-find This works fine, but sometimes FileMaker stops sorting all together, and just returns the first three records in the database. When it happens, this affects all datab…

We have been using Filemaker Server to run several databases, including a set of 5 relational files. Everything ran smoothly from FP7 to FP8 upgrade, including all related DB files. Our server is on a PC (Windows XP I believe, FP8), all clients are Mac OSX (10.4.8) running FP8. I administer the databases using the Server Admin program from my Mac. Recently, I needed to add another related database. To do so, I copied the related DB files to my local hard drive (after closing them from the Admin Server), set up all new relationships with existing files (including some calculations fields, merge fields incorporating data from several of the files for labels, etc.…

I made a small helper file, placed it in the same directory as all major data files. When I start up FM Server, the status goes from Closed to Normal, but when I try to access this file from a client computer, it does not even show up in the list. Actually, the only one that shows up is the FMServer_sample.fp7 file, but maybe (?) this is because all other files are already open at the client PC. The helper file is completely unlocked, multiuser = ON, but this user = LOST. Not very familiar with Windows myself, so maybe I am missing a setting somewhere in the Services, but so far it eludes me completely why that file doesn't simply show up? Any help a…

Is it possible to connect more than 1 WPE to a FileMaker Adv Server? I tried it, and in the Web Pub Console I get the message: This is an interesting message because it recognizes what I'm trying to do, but only indicates that it's a licensing issue. Can one just go to FileMaker and "buy additional WPE connections???" For some background as to why I'd like to do this: I'd like to publish an IWP app to the internet on an IIS server w/WPE in our DMZ with only IWP enabled, and then have different IIS server/WPE in our intranet with only XML publishing exposed for some of our production systems. (using the same FileMaker server to access a common database…

Used to have peer-to-peer using FM8 Adv. Now, trying out FMServer 8. Is it possible to open files in the same computer where server 8 is running and hosting the same files you want to open as a client? I opened a file hosted by the server using FM8 adv in the same pc but I get an error saying that the file is already being shared by a filemaker program or something like that. BUT, it will still proceed to open the file. I don't know if that will screw it up.

We've got a database that publishes job postings on the web, controlled with privilege sets. After the job deadline passes, we do not want users to be able to see the job posting. I can easily set this up with forced date-specific searches or something like a PostOnWeb field with a value of Yes or No. This works, but it doesn't prevent a knowledgeable FMP user from editing the URL to include these excluded records. I'm asking whether we can keep records in a table but essentially "turn them off" so they cannot be accessed on the web, period, but still remain in the table for archiving purposes. Anyone know how to do this?

I have FM Server 8 advanced running on an OSX server and it is serving website and databases through a router. I can connect flawlessly to the databases using PCs and Macs with different browsers when I am on my internal network, but I have problems connecting to it externally from the Internet. I have OS 10.4.8 and FM 8 server on G5 mac. I just converted a FM5 solution to FM8 and the whole thing runs well on a single computer. I transfered the folder with all the files into the data folder inside FM server folder. I opened the solution from a client on the network but it will not open that one file which was previously accessable while running outside the Server. It does open all the other files in the folder though. Prior to conversion, I did "recover " the file successfully. So, why won't the server open that only lone file. Thanks in advance for all those great minds that take time out of here busy day to answer the needs of us, weaker minded…

I'm currently running FileMaker Server 8.04 Advanced on a Mac OS X 10.4.6 Server. In getting this setup, the Admin Console talks with the Publishing Engine fine when SSL is NOT enabled. However, as soon as I turn on SSL via the Server Admin program, the Admin Console claims that the Publishing Engine is not responding. (In addition to the error message at the top of the Admin console that says "An unexpected error has occurred.") The exact message I see for the WPE is "The Publishing Engine is not responding. If the Publishing Engine has not yet been configured, click here to continue." All of the components are running on the same machine. I have all the ports…

I am running Server 8 and FMP 8.5 on the client machines. I recently copied and moved a file onto my laptop to update it. I've made the changes, changed the name slightly (through a "save as") and cut and pasted it back into the database folder under server. After several hours of trial and error, I've finally realized that I can have either the original version of the file, or the new one show up in the remote list, but not both at once. I figured this out through Server Adminstration, and going to the Datbase Node and closing one, which allows the other to open. So, what I really need is for both to run at once. With earlier versions I could save the background DBF…

I'm trying to get responses back from the Web Publishing Engine. I'm using examples from the documentation. When I use http://filemaker.dealexpress.com/fmi/xml/fmresultset.xml?-dbnames I get a response of the database names. So that's cool. Then I try https://filemaker.dealexpress.com/fmi/xml/fmresultset.xml?-db=Products&-lay=Item%20Overview&-findall And I get Error Code 802. I look in the documentation and that code says "Unable to open file." But nothing about why or how to fix the problem. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I ran into a problem that puzzles me (and haunts me). I just upgraded a file to be run on FM server 8 and it no longer opens to the "Normal" status. I have checked the usual suspects (fmapp checkbox, multiuser status etc, ran file maintenance programs) but everything seems OK. Also 3 other files on that server open OK. The file opens w/o any problem or error report locally using FM8.5 Advanced, also on the PC where the server runs, using a local FM-Pro 8, but when I try to start up all files with FM-Server, the Normal status flashes up for a millisecond for the problem file, then closes again. The upgrade did involve some minor scripting but as far as I kno…

I'm running FMS8.0 on Windows 2003. Using the Administrative controls, I've set clients to be closed out after fifteen minutes of idle time. FM states that the user will be made aware of this at sign-on. Neither the warning nor the actual client logout occur following any long idle period. Is anyone using this function, and if so are there tricks to it? I view it as an important security practice. :D

I am serving (FM Server 8 on Windows 2003 server) a database with global fields that users can change/update. The problem is that when the users quit out of their FM clients, the numbers go back to what they were before they changed them. This happens to me also (I am an administrator). If you turn off the FM Server service on the Windows 2003 server, and open the file with FM Client from the server shared folder, you can change the numbers in the global fields, and the updates stay. Anyone else run into this problem?

I hope you guys can help. We are running FileMaker Server Advanced 8v4 The system is constantly slowing down and often grinding to a complete halt, we think we have isolated the cause to users performing finds in certain fields, but this should not cause the system to crash surely. This is causing severe issues as when it happens everyone using FileMaker is affected. Looking at the server monitoring software we use, the processor is being heavily hit at the times of slowdown, over 60%, and there appears to be nothing we can do. I just upgraded our Server to 8.0v4 and clients to 8.5. Server 8 could not open 3 of the 8 files, so I recovered them and now it seems to work fine. Users are just fooling around with 8.5 now... Some things act a little weird...global fields show data that is temporarily stored for calculations and (so far) one script does not act as it did before. The script is perfectly right, all attempts to work around it did not bring any results at all! As a matter of fact it includes 2 of the 3 recovered files (the script works as a Report Central that searches in all textfields in all files). It's really weird because if I add a Pause/Resume script step to debug the script it…

Im using FileMaker Server 8.0v4 with a Cable connection to host my files with a download connection of 1MB and upload of 128Mb/256Mb ( I think its at the lower end). The data.fp7 file contains 12 tables, and each table contains about 2,500 records. Everytime I open up say the clients TO in my interface file, I tend to do a sort on company_name field in ascending order. The company_name field is indexed, but the sort seems to take an absolute age on a remote computer connecting using WAN. I though with the advent of Server 8.0v3 + s…

I have a web site using SQL to query from FM tables running on FMSA. With FMSA7 it worked with queries to tables as well as with queries to layouts with portals to other FM files shared in the same way as the main file. With FMSA8 only the queries to tables in the same file work... the queries to the layouts that have a portal to another file data do not. All settings are identical... did something change in v8? Please help... adim

I currently use openssh and putty to access my server remotely. I use "localhost" instead of an ip address when I am referencing it to access files and such on the server. I am trying to access some filemaker files that are being hosted on the server but cannot seem to see them. Any suggestions?

I'm setting up an old FM6 database system in FM8 and using the external user accounts via local accounts on the server computer (Mac OSX.4) I understand the account setups and creating groups to do group control of user accounts (I read the Server External Authenticaion tech brief which was fantastic by the way). The two things that I'm curious about are: 1. I originally had a database in FM6 (called StaffList) that had a list of all users by the user-accounts so people could see internal contacts. Is there a way to do this in 8---to have a database listing of all the external user-accounts located on the server computer? 2. Is there a way to manage user-a…

Hi, Stupid server scripting question from a dummy! I am "pushing" (cron job) from a MySQL DB into a folder on the puter that houses Filemaker Server Advanced 8.5. I then have written a script step (importing records) from a FM client on a remote machine that accesses FM Server and "updates" a file and adds new records by importing from the MySQL file....and it works! My trouble is --- 1) I want another user , with an FM client, at a remote location to be able to use the same script step and update records--- 2) The "import" script step is not web-compatible 3) Even if the script step was compatible it still opens a dialog box for you to navigate and fing…

I am looking to simplify the opening of a hosted database. Clients are Mac OS X.... for this database Database is hosted on Mac OSX Server Currently I think we have to launch Filemaker and Open Remote etc. I was hoping to "simplify" this process if possible. (These users are accustomed to opening a database by clicking on an alias from their desktop) Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi, I feel that i have correctly installed FileMaker server advanced with fmxslt and fmxsl guest account options selected. The fmi/config console is running with xml/xslt activated. Everything works fine with client side process but when i try to reach my pages for server side treatment, thoses pages are not found. If i undertood correctly, the xsl stylesheets have to be placed in the xslt-template-files folder of FileMaker server and the http://my.domain.com/fmi/xsl/stylesheet.xsl link is supposed to find its way... But thats not the case and i dont know why. Does anybody ever experienced that? Thank you for yous help...

We recently purchased Advanced Server 8 and installed it on a Mac OS X Server (10.4.7) box. I put up a play database and it seems to be just fine, but I have a few questions before we go live with it. - How do I make chron backups with the server console? I have a “scheduled job” called backmeup (remember it’s play mode). And every 30 minutes it will create a new backup in the Backups folder. But ideally what I would like is a backup of the HR database called HRBackup090606.fp7 (title of database with date). - I have read (mostly on this forum) that it is not recommended to make updates to the database while it’s live (or “open” on the server)…… so would I…

Hi I was wondering if there was a way of making sure a file was hosted before a script would be allowed to run. People take copies of the system and certain script should only be run on live data, not the local copy. I hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance. Orlando

For my beta testing server (FMS8 on Panther), I have hosted my files, opened port 5003, pointed to my Internal IP, and tested with success (from an external open ISP as well as my own) connecting to my server via Remote, LDAP to my external IP address. However, from my client's office, it could not connect. Although it seems to establish the LDAP connect and the IP address shows above, and the network path IS correct (eg fmnet:/1.1.1.1/DBFile), the answer returned (both from PC and Mac, two sites) was: "DBFile.fp7" could not be opened. Either the host is not available, or that file [is not]. The assumption is that the firewall is preventing the required data excha…

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with trying a dual installation of FileMaker Server 5 and FileMaker Server 8 on the same machine? We are migrating from 5 to 8 with an upgrade, and I would like to have 8 up and running for testing if possible before the cut-over, and do not have the luxury of another machine to test on. I doubt this is possible, but wanted to ask. I haven't been able to find any info in documentation or searching forums. Thanks, Tony San Francisco Botanical Garden

Hi all because of the sheer number of databases we publish in our organisation, we have more than one FM Server and as a result, more than 1 Web Server. All servers are FMPS8.0v3 and the web servers are FMPSA 8.0. We have set up the servers so that they all have the same identifiers, so that we can pull related data from tables on other servers. The problem is this, I want to be able to use some of the servers directly and would like to point to a secondary Web Publishing Engine? Will this work? Thanks for any advice. Regards Zip

I am havinga problem with FM Server 8 running on OS X Tiger server. While the FM shows that the backup scripts are running as configured, the backup files display their Creation Dates in the finder window under the heading "Date Modified." This makes it look like the backup script is not running. When you select and individual database and do a command-i, the correct modifcation date appears. Is anyone else having this problem or have an explanation as to what is happening here? Thanks!

Advice needed please! We are looking at a CWP project to allow users to set preferences for a non-Filemaker extranet with it's own userIDs and passwords. Our idea is to provide a parallel set of identical Filemaker logins to allow us to set up session IDs for each valid user and allow them to reset preferences - these would in turn update the extranet system through an ODBC connection. These users are only validated in the extranet, not in any external domain controlled by Windows or OSX servers. Currently we have 3000+ users of the extranet, and this may double in the next five years. As a once-off exercise we could probably create Filemaker accounts for these users an…

I recently added passwords to our customer database. Here is the problem I am having. Contractor 1. WinXP Pro Filemaker 6 connecting to Filemaker Server 5.5 No Problems Contractor 2. WinXP Home Filemaker 5 connecting to Filemaker 5.5 When using a database password with no restrictions, connect just fine. When using a password with browse a/o edit restrictions based on the contents of a specific field, I get the following error message: This password does not enable you to perform this operation. When I give that password full rights, it connects just fine. Any ideas?

I have software that will not run with IIS and replacing all that would be a job I am not looking forward to. Has someone got this combination to work? Is it possible by following the installation protocol for Mac+Apache?

Today with little to do at work, I created a Java application that monitors the WPE/WPC service and if they don't respond after certain amount of time, I would kill the service and restart it Does the WPE/WPC needs such a monitoring as I see on the board there are issues of freezing up with this service? I'm thinking of adding to monitor the FMS itself now. What does everyone think is a good thing to monitor ? I'm going to leave monitoring IIS as I think it's pretty rock solid webserver and plus there are tools out there that monitors IIS already. I want to make a specific set of monitoring tools to keep the FMS running 24/7. My ultimate goal is to have my tool …

Hi During a conversion project from 5 to 8 I need to make a decision about File Referencing and different sources seem to have different opinions on the subject. We are hosting the entire system on the same server, now we do not want to specify a specific IP address as this will cause problems if we change the address or run the system off line. Now my main question; is it advisable to us an asterisk (*) in the Fmnet: protocol? i.e. "fmnet: /*/Filename" FileMaker server guide says yes, others say no. Or if the files are on the same server use the File: protocol? I hope this makes sense. Thanks for your help Orlando

I have an enduser *deep sigh*...who has apparently built a database in FileMaker 5. She is now trying to share this database, and the network users have no problems. However, any time she tries to open it locally on her machine, it gives her an error 10048, saying that it cannot host a file... I understand this is normally a problem with FileMaker server, but she's not running it on there. Any ideas, anyone? I appreciate any response.

Hi Guys, Has anyone attempted to convert an FX.php + FileMaker solution to a MySQL + PHP based solution? I would be very interested in finding out how easy it would be to port the fx.php pages to be compatible with MySQL. We use FileMaker and FxForge occasionally to do RAD and then hand over the prototype to another agency to be developed into MySQL. I've checked fmpromigrator which looks ideal for converting datafiles, but how easy is it to convert the php element? Many Thanks

In FM5/6 I found it crucial for my Windows clients accessing the server from another LAN, that I use the same static IP address on my own server as the one at the client. Saved me the headache of testing and relinking scripts, plus it was snappier if the script "remembered" the IP. Does the same hold true under FM8?

I'm using Filemaker Server Advanced 7.0v3 on Mac OSX 10.3.9 (and 10.4) I'm using a xsl-stylesheet with a function of the form "document(filemaker-query-url)". If I try to query the whole database (about 20 MB) I get a nullstring back. If I query only a part of my database everything works fine. If I put the not working filemaker-query-url direct in my browser it is working too. In pe_application_log.txt I get errors like "Can not load requested doc". In web_server_module_log.txt I get different jk_ajp_common errors. I changed a few parameters in tomcat server.xml without any success. Does anybody know what to do? Best regards Gisbert Breitbach
