I have been updating all our machines to v8, fixing my value lists to not show id values, and using tabs to slim down my layouts. Everything seems great... One thing I've noticed is a significant slowdown in the display of subsummary reports in preview mode on macs. Sorting and calculating the subsummary values is the same speed, but displaying the pages on a mac is much slower than v7. It often takes several seconds to move from one page to the next with v8. I've observed this on three macs all with 10.4.2 ranging from 533MHz to 1.5GHz with the same results whether with a local file or on a network. Not a dealbreaker, but definitely irritating. Anyone …

Hi all, Quite new to FM and still using the demo of v7, but I have a few questions before I actually purchase it, including which version to get... Am I correct in assuming with FM8 Advanced that I can create a database that runs stand alone, and that others can search through and edit? For instance, I'd like to create a contact database that our advertising staff can search through and add records to WITHOUT having the full blown FM package installed? I could just create it initially as a stand alone, then pass it along to them to populate with their data? I have used FileMaker 6 on my computer without problem. I am trying the FM8 Trial version and it is overall very snappy interface, except when I use the Layout Mode. Then, if I click and hold on the Field button and start to drag the little outline of a field onto the layout to place it, the CPU meter maxes out and the interface behaves like molasses. It is very slow to respond and even when I stop moving it, a long as I keep the mouse button held down the CPU remains maxed. As another example, I try to move a field or label that I've clicked and it takes over a second for it to catch up to where I moved my mouse, and usually not quite in the right place. It makes it f…

Today for some reason I can not fathom, when I go to use the Show Window, the wrong file opens. We have a small network and the issue occures on all machines, including the server. I've tried repairing the permissions, trashing the preference file and double checking the reference files. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I downloaded v8 and ordered v8 Advanced. I have a lot of cases where I use a Popup Menu (in Win XP)through a script which sometimes does nothing more than refresh the portal, but sometimes performs some really useful behavior (like changing a layout, etc.) This use to work fine in v6 (I skipped v7 for lots of resaons), but blows up and FM dies and I find myself back at my desktop. Has anyone had problems doing this in v7 or v8? Methinks they have a real bad bug. Steve

How do I insert a photo into the Body field in FM 8 using the Email Campaign Management template that came with it? I don't want the photo as an attachment. I want it in the body of the email on the right side with the size being 2" square. All of the text needs to be wraped so that it is on the left side of photo.

I have just used FileMaker 8 to create my monthly invoicing pdfs. Usually these are two pages of text per file (including one small PICT graphic) and come in about 300K. In FileMaker 8 they are a massive 2.9MB. To double-check I swapped back to v7 and produced them from there - no problem, they came out at 300K each. I PDFed another report in v8 with just text and it was still 10 times bigger than one produced in v7. Anyone else getting massive PDFs? (Mac G4 10.4.2). Ian

Hi Opening an existing solution in FM8 I came across the following problem. In FM7... My table has a number calculation field 'Max(lines::value)' - it returns the maximum value of a field in the related table. The calculation is unchecked for 'do not evaluate if all referenced fields are empty'. Therefore if there are no related records it returns a 0. My script searches this calculation field with the criteria '<1' which therefore returns all records without related values in FM8... Opening this file in v8 the zero's have disappeared from the calculated field, thus I get no results with my '<1' search and have to do an '=' search to get my fou…

Earlier I thought I had a corrupt file. But the recipe for losing recently-created related records has nothing to do with my particular file: (1) Create two tables related via a key. The first "main" table needs only the key. Second "Details" table has a Details text field, and also the key. Draw Relational link between Key fields, and edit relation to allow creation of related records in Details table. In FM 7 if you ran a print script on Windows, it would either not print or revert to the default print settings. You could overcome this in certain circumstances by asking for a dialogue box to come up, however this was not an ideal work around. I was just wondering if this had been fixed in FM 8?

Using FM7. My dbase has about 15000 records, all of which have been imported from various sources, some Excel but mostly earlier versions of FM. There is a date field where the date displays correctly for all except for about 700 records where it shows up as ? ... Hi I just wanted to let everyone know that I was having issues with all buttons that were embossed with a hairline point line. In FM7 the buttons look fine. However in FM8 these buttons now look flat and ugly. The embossing is still on them, however, I had to change the line to 1 point from hairline to make it look like it did in 7. I havent tried it on the mac because this company doesnt have a mac, so I am not sure if it is only XP specific. Figured I would post it because it was such a pain in the butt to ungroup each button that I had on every layout that I had, in order to change the line point on them...

For the life of me I can't figure out the supposed email merge features in the new FMP. Help! When the ads say "multiple messages to all your customers" it suggests merging information between stock text and fields of a record to unique addresses as one needs to do in email campaigns. Read the new print manual. What it says about email is "see Help". Read "help". It says have a report in browse mode, go to file/send email and make selections. The new tab control looks good, I was hoping it would drastically cut down on the number of layouts I use.... where I have a layout that is duplicated depending on whether the user is viewing, editing, creating or deleting a record. I was hoping to do this using tabs but I cant see if I can validate data entered before they can switch tabs. E.g if they use a tab to switch to a view where the fields are accessible to edit and then change to another tab can I trigger a script that checks and validates the data before it goes to the new tab?

Along with the rename of Developer to Advanced FMI have provided an upgrade path for users like me who are not Developers but would love to get our hands on the custom features in the Developer versions. I paid an extra £70 to have the upgrade to 8 advanced rather than 8 and I think FMI should be congratulated for following up their reasoning for a name change and making it possible to move up.

The Go To Related Record bug still exists in FM8. This is were the layout name does not stick or shows "unknown" for the GTRR script step. This only happens when the table being referred to does not exist in the current file but a related file. I recently upgraded from FM3 to FM7. The new functionality is excellent, but I'm seeing flashing or flickering when manually selecting text in a FM7 field (Windows XP). This makes the text selection process appear very jittery, unsmooth and unprofessional. This is happening in every database and in every field using the desktop version of FM7 Developer. Text selection is very smooth, though, when working in an IWP version of a database. This was never an issue in FM3 for me. I notice that in FM3, the selected text appears in a black background (selection bar?), as it also does in MS Word; however in FM7 Developer, the selected text appears in a bluish background…

Hello, I'm not sure if this is a bug or a feature, but here's how to reproduce it. FYI, this is also a regression from 8.0v1 beta. 1) Create a layout and put a single field on it. 2) Define the Field Behavior so that you *cannot* enter the field in either Browse Mode or Find Mode. 3) Create a test script with the following steps: Go to Field [] Go to Next Field In 7.0v3 and 8.0v1 beta (Client) the test script would place the cursor in the field, as expected. We have a FMP 7.0 v3 Database with about 700 records. Yesterday morning, the window was open on the desktop (with a record showing), and my wife closed the window with the "X" in the upper right corner as usual. Her computer runs Win 2000 Professional. An hour later, I double-clicked on the database and it opened with "0 Records". ALL of the records, and scriptmaker scripts, were gone! The layouts were all there. The file size was 24K, previously 1.6MB. There was nothing in the trash, and ScanDisk showed no errors. Anyone know any possible way this could have happened? We have this FM8 database that we've spent the summer taking patient data on paper and putting it into the database. The database was developed by a national organization. Our goal is to better understand what we do for our patients, so there is some data analysis required. My gestalt so far is that Filemaker is not the best to create complex reports of data analysis. FM8 has added some new reserved symbols to the list. { } $ In FM7 these were allowed now they are not. This will hurt me a lot as I use the { and } symbols in my relationship names (i.e. {Customer} Address ). The strange part is all the relations and scripts, that I created in FM7, work fine in FM8, but when it comes time to edit their names or code, filemaker puts up a warning. When you try to add one of these relations to a calculation, filemaker will not recognize the relation or field and will not let you add it. So I have to go through all my relations and rename them. Hi, Does anyone know if 7.0 to 8.0 will be a simple update or yet another rewrite like with 6.0 to 7.0? I'm just finishing up migrating to 7.0 after holding off for about 6 months (due to seeing 7.1, 7.2 and 7.3 appear in the meantime) and as it would require a lot of rewriting en retesting. Now 8.0 is announced, and I am weary that it will require yet another rewrite. Not to mention the fact we wasted some money on getting update licenses for 7.0 that we will use for only 2-3 months (out of which I spent 1 month rewriting). Please say it aint so...

I've noticed a quirk between the Windows and Mac OS X versions of Filemaker Pro 7. I have a database where I have three different windows open at the same time to show three different layouts of the same database. On a Windows version of FM I can click a button and have it work right away even if the button is not in the active window. On the Mac, clicking a button in an inactive window does nothing except make the window the button is in active. I then I have to click the button again to make it work. I like the way the Windows version does it. Is it possible to make the Mac version do it the same way?

Does anyone have any info in "Dynamic Document Creation"? I am trying to do something where we have a image of a sign and whatever the user types into a filemaker field will show up on the sign. Help. I am using FMP 7.0 v3. I have a database with several tables. When I attempt to delete a single record in one table, FM deletes all records from that table. Performing the same operation on other tables within the database, only the highlighted record is deleted. The issue is teh same whether the records are sorted or all records are showing. Baffled why the impact is only one one table and how to fix this problem so I can properly delete appropriately selected records?

Has anyone come across any FileMaker Pro based online discussion boards or forums? There's a group at work that would like to implement something along these lines, and our IS Manager is very hesitant to introduce any new software, such as SMF, Slash, or PNphpBB2. Just a quick question guys, how reliable does filemaker become as the physical size of the database is increased. The reason i ask is this: Im making a database involving the storage of pictures for deployment on server, but while i would like to store references the d*** head network guys tell me i can't map network drives off two of the person(s) computers (and so im assuming the referenced files cant be accessed). Over time this database will become increasingly large, and the pictures will take up a lot of room. Hi folks, We're having this weird issue where a person will have a copy of FileMaker Pro 7 on their machine complain about licensing, even when no others are running (we DO have a few identical licensed copies installed that are not volume licensing, but we are planning on getting a volume licensing--this is just for prelim testing. I'm finishing up an app that will be turned into a runtime program and while trying to hide the status area, etc. I can't get into layout mode anymore. I created a script to run at startup (by selecting it with File/Options) called , 'Startup' which does the following ... Close Window [current window] Show/Hide Status Area [Lock; Hide] etc. It flashes something for a split second, then appears that the database is closed (I can't go to Scriptmaker, Layout Mode, etc.) I suspect the Close Window statement is causing it, but can't seemed to find a way around this. I have a bunch of FM7 files in my trash, and when I try to empty the trash I get an error message that says: "The operation cannot be completed because the item FMStrs.dls is Locked". I just moved from FMP 5 to 7 and have encountered some bugs. Are these normal? One thing: In one layout I put text in a field and realized that I wanted that text in different field found in a different layout. when I went to the desired layout and field, when I tried to copy the text and paste it, the text came through incorrectly. I recently created a v7 file for a client with several tables - Inventory, Clients, Invoices, etc. They've spent time inputting all the data for the Inventory (their most important table). When the file opens it shows 447 records in the Inventory. However, all but one record appear to be empty. All of the "blank" records lock me out from selecting any fields - as if they were locked. Let's assume an ordering database for t-shirts, sweatshirts and other "wearables." The "ordered items" table includes a Product_ID field, as well as fields for multiple garment sizes (small, medium, large, and so on). For eample, let's assume there are three line items. The first shows an order for 20 small sizes of Product A. The second shows an order for 10 medium sizes of Product A. And the third shows an order for 10 medium sizes of Product B. I'm not sure if there's a script for this, or if there's a better forum to post in, but here's my problem: When creating a new record for a project, an estimate needs to be generated as well. the 'project' and 'estimate' are two different layouts of the same database which share a serial number and client code. We have a script (and a button) that will generate a 'projcet' and 'estimate' at the same time when it is run, but the problem is people are hitting 'command + N' to create a new record. Using the Inventory template that comes with FMP7, what I want to do is this: When the user selects an Asset and hits the "check out" button, they are brought to a list view of the Contacts. From here they normally scroll down the list and click to select the appropriate contact. This Contact ID is then added to the History file in the Assets database. Nice, straightforward, it already works. The Contacts at my university all have student ID cards, and I have a card reader which will enter their unique Contact ID when swiped. In case of doing a file recovery you read a lot of different things, but one thing is not clear to me: After doing the recovery, is it really necessary to export all the data into a text format or is it safe enough to use the recoverd FileMaker files to import the data into clean clones? The first way means the hell of a work, especially afterwards when importing data and matching all data to the correct fields!

Ok, for better or worse I moved my 4000 field DB over to 7.0 v3. I have a few relational DBs connected primarily to moved scanned PDFs out of the main DB (storage purposes). After having crashed a couple of times, now, upon reestablishing the relationships "scans" for unused blocks EVERY TIME. Wasn't doing this trick the first month after I converted, but it is now the normal course of action. This totally sucks as it takes like 30 minutes to cycle through it. Considering moving the scans to a new DB and renaming over top of it. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Wes

Not sure if i'm posting this in the right place or not but here goes: I've seen comments and didn't quite understand what's with all the "what platform are you on". The solutions I work with are such that I'm providing maintence on existing code. Hi all, I'm relatively new to FMP7 and building my first solution. I'm wondering if there's a way to lock a field (from edit) based on some condition. I have a field in my main table, "grade", that should be locked based on a date range of two global fields in my user interface table. I have the global fields "grade_begin_dt" and "grade_end_dt" set to the date range when the field "grade" should be open. If the current date is outside of that range, I want to lock the "grade" field and prevent any edits. Any thoughts appreciated! -Heather

Please help, I randomly had Filemaker Pro 7 crap out on me on a PC running Windows 2000. The program has run fine for months, and out of nowhere, it nows freezes the whole machine while starting up (cursor moves, but remains an hourglass). The splash screen has paused on 'Initializing' and also 'Building Font Menu.' I've since done a complete uninstall, clearing out the registry and doing a clean install of FMP7 on this PC, and still it freezes on 'Building Font Menu.' I've tried emptying the Temp Folder as well as deleting what I believe were third party fonts (I could use more font advice though). Please help me!

I have a db that works great on WinXP, my creative team, all running Mac OSX, is having a hard time with some value list pop up lists - it is set up so that in field one, a job number is chosen via a pop up value list, then the 2nd field is populated with the corresponding job name (also a value list). On the PC, no issues, on the Mac, the job number part works fine, but it won't populate the 2nd field, unless the user clicks off of that field, clicks on one some other fielde, then clicks back to the job name field, then it fills the name in. Thought I might just ask this question to some of you that have a fair bit more experience than me with FM. I am coming to the point of completion on a solution I have been working on for some time. It has turned out to be an absolute monstrosity though. About 60 odd actual tables, literally thousands of fields and even more relationships (the gragh is almost impossible to make sense of). Hundreds of value lists, and I have to scroll down for 30 seconds or so to choose a layout from the bottom of the list. I am preparing the reports now and have worked out that the only way to produce one of the reports is to create a further 338 calculation fields, 169 relationships…

Has anyone else had this problem? When in the browse mode in FM7 (w/ Mac OS 10.3.9) usually the cursor is half a character off, sometimes about eight characters off, occassionally right on. I did not have this problem with FM6. Any suggestions would be much appriciated. Thanks. (Btw, I'm a totally low level, one-person-office user.)

Hi gang, I just upgraded my pc and now when I am in my solutions, I get a "Blinking", on certain layouts. It seems to be refreshing at a rapid rate. On some layouts with graphics it can freeze up and blink for a long time. Is this a setting in FM or in Windows? How can I solve this? Any help is greatly appreciated. It's driving me crazy. Thanks

I'm currently working on a Filemaker 7 solution that contains about 6000 records. The solution keeps information on books and includes information such as authors, title, description, and so on. The title field is set to index all, and searches on the database occur very quickly, both using Filemaker client, and via the web with CWP with XSLT. The problem I'm having is when I attempt to sort the records. If I want to sort all of the records in the database the sort can take up to about 30-40 seconds, even if I sort on the title field (which is set to index all.) I am in the learning curve of the FileMaker 7 power. One great thing from this new version is the ability to have more than one window open at the same time. And in my solutions I used to define some globals. I perform validation through a script using the data that the user inputs. This way data can be modified before the record is created. With earlier versions there was no problem since every file had it's own globals. Now, with version 7 and all the possibilities you have in the relationships dialog box it is entirely different. Okay, recently we converted our bases from FileMaker 5.5 to 7, because there are greats improvement. I have a data base containing several tables. Each table represents hardware on our network, clients, servers, printers etc. Each machine is assigned a unique asset code. I would like to be able to define a search where an admin can come into a layout, enter an asset code and find the related hardware. this requires me to search on a single criteria across multiple tables. How is the best way to go about this? I was going to create a layout with one search box (for the asset id) and then several portals into each of the tables? Background info: Mac OS X 10.3.9. Trying to install Filemaker Pro 7. I'm a web developer who is overly confident on PCs and Unix-based systems but this new gig has me working in a cubicle on a Mac and I'm losing my mind (what's with only one mouse button? Weird). I have a customer that is having regular problems with duplicate serial numbers in FMP 7. They have multiple users creating new records at one time and they are getting as many as 3-4 duplicates a day. Serialization is set to occur on record creation. In FMP 6 I scripted record creation and put users into a que while a different user was creating a new record. I've come to believe that duplicates shouldn't occur in 7. I've change the field to serialize on record commit for now (hoping that will help.) Has anyone else had any experience with this? Thanks much.

"Error 1723. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." Just to make sure we didn't get a wacked download, I transferred it to my computer (win xp) and upzipped it and installed it there, no problem. Hi, I'm not entirely sure that this post is being made in the right topic, but here goes. I'm trying to design a database that takes care of daily and weekly production data for a TV show. Anyway, using two layouts I am able to take care of daily calculations (such as total tape recording time) with ease. However, because we handle operations, we only allocate some things on a weekly basis (such as total studio time). Using a second table to track this stuff is no biggie. However, I do have problems when I want to compute that for a given day we have used x% of our weekly studio time. So my question really is how can I have a calculation from the weekly…

Hi, I've had an issue with FM7 and FM7Dev on my Windows XP PC for a little while and now it's become a real problem. When I select field contents and copy, either by Ctrl C, menu Edit|Copy, right click|Copy, or by script, the copy randomly fails, leaving a null field in the clipboard. In other words, it writes over the previous clipboard contents with a null. I was gnashing my teeth and working around this for a while, but now I need to use the Copy function in a script.
