    2 databases related thru a ID#. Main database has portal linking to the second database. As it should, when I click in a blank portal field in the Main database, a record is created in the second related database with a matching ID#. Here is a twist...Is there anyway to click in a empty portal, and instead if it creating just one record with a matching ID# in the related database, can it create 8 of them. Reason I ask this is I almost always created 8 records thru the portal. And instead of always having to click the last empty line in the portal to generate the next line/record, I would just like it to start of from the git go with 8 blank lines/rec…

  2. I'm goign to set up a DB with a 4 part category selection. Part 1 will result in different subcategories in part 2, 2 in 3, and 3 in 4. What would be the best way to do this. Not all the categories go 4 deep, and the last one will have a category number assigned to it. Thanks -j

    I have read some place, printing problems with "Portal"... I have a new feature in my solution, I change repeating fields with a portal... The thing is: I have a list (2 rows) for each dataline for AirConditionning equipment, most customer can fit in one page... but with shopping mail and 250 units.... that can be a problem.... I have try it, it will be a NCR 3 copys on a dots printers, I have done some test on a HP Laser, and I have some cuts in between pages...     I am using FMP 5.5v2 in OSX and have noticed on occassion that after entering an record in a portal file that the entry is invisible when viewed through the portal. I don't think I've ever come across this in OS9 versions. Example: Customer & Invoice files-after adding a new invoice through an invoice script, it is not seen in the portal from the customer file until after closing the customer record and reopening it as though the portal is not updating its contents until after the customer record is closed and re-opened.

    I'm a new FM Developer and so my terminology won't be right at this time, but I'm working on it. What I would like to do is be able to have one screen where I put in a client's name and somewhere on the same screen will be a box of some sort where all the reports that have been submitted from him will show up without me having to go and hunt them down.   12. Help, I have 2 files: 1 called "Jobs" that contains specific job information. Including a portal to a file called "jobItems". No problem here. The other file is called "Invoice" and contains billing information for each job, also with a portal to the same file called "jobItems" where a user will check a box when the itam is invoiced.     Hello Forgive me for asking such a simple question. But I just don't understand portal basics. (And further more I use a swedish copy of FM 4.1, headache...) I am planning a small database. Maybe no more than 50 records. Each record will contain something like a title, an abstract and keywords. Each abstract is, of course, uniquely connected to its title. But the keywords may (or may not) be related to more than one record. I see no upper limit to how many keywords each record may contain, though it's not likely that each record will contain more than 5 of them.     We are using FM to run our real estate office including preparation of contracts of sale. A contract can have several "condition clauses" The contract clauses are in another file with a clause number. In the contract there is place for several clauses which the user enters a number for each and the assocaiated clause is shown on the contract. Problem is the user needs to know what clause number to use. What I want to be able to do is allow users to scroll through the clauses until they find the one thay want and then "select it" to be entered into the contract. Unfortunately the portal brings back several years worth of data. Is it possible to set up a portal so that the records match the "category" *and* satisfy a time constraint ( say,for example, for the current year...). Each of the records contain a "date" field.     I guess I misunderstood what a portal is an what a porta could do. I viewed a portal as another table (file) and that you could set a portal up as a table (sub-table) inside of a table and that one could then directly enter records into that sub-table. So far, I'm only able to use a portal to display related records. Is there a way to enter new records into a portal while it is being displayed on the main layout? What am I missing??? Thank you

    A selected portal in my invoicing db is printing sporadically or rather "on top" of the page hiding all of the line graphics behind the portal and extends down into the non portal area. I have been able to reformat the portal and it goes a way for a day and then is back the next. I can move the "infected" portal to the extreme right (off the page) and the invoice will print correctly. This has just started in the last 2 weeks along with an intermitent and sporadic bolding of characters within fields.     can you have a portal within a portal by this i mean i have company database within which i want to show their orders (which is fine) done in a portal i can show all of their orders.     I am working with two related files: Employees, which contains all general information about the employees, and Job Entries, which contains all of the job-related information for each employee (contract dates and renewals, position titles, department, manager, etc.).     Hello I haven't been able to figure out sorting records in a portal based on a value list when defining the relationship. I want to sort the records in the portal on any field in the portal. Is that that what a value list is used for in that situation? If I don't specify which field to sort related records on, the portal always displays them in serial record order. I want them sorted by DueDate, CustomerName or DocketNumber. As well I would like to filter them based on the contents of one field. I am completely lost on this one. Thanks for your help.

    If a certain value occurs in the child record, I need the parent of it do be duplicated, and a few fields changed. Unfortunatly I can't get over to the parent file to do this via a script.     I have several portals on the same page. If I have a script that says go to Portal Row #1, it always goes to the top row of the first portal. How can I tell it to go to the first row of the other portals? I have used several combinations of Go to Field... and Go to Portal Row... script steps. It always goes to the correct field but then goes to the correct row on the wrong portal. This is very confusing. Any suggestions?

    I'm trying to find a way to perform two actions in one script: Action 1(Already works): Search for all records w/in a specific date range and that contain a certain critera within each records portal. Action 2(The problem): Once I know how many cases there are that meet this critera I want to know how many of the portal rows within each case have a certain criteria. I actually need the number (i.e. portal for record 1 contains 5 occurances of a particular word, record 2 contains 1, and so on for each record in the set I've found). There is probably a much easier way to do this than what I'm doing so any help is appreciated.

    Hi Alison You don't need to write a script. You can use SPECIFY BUTTON to simply GO TO RELATED RECORD (same relationship as your portal) A button placed in the row should pose no problem - a nice way of keeping your portal clean is to make the Executive Name field the button - therefore clicking the name field will take you directly to that record. You only need to place the button in the top row (in Layout Mode) and it will repeat for every portal row in Browse Mode.   42. Is there a way/trick to make 2 fields scroll together? The issue concerns a main file and 1 related file (1 on 1 relation). I need to display 2 of the related text fields next to each other in the main file, the difficulty is that the height of the text entries vary(together). I know I can put a vertical scroll bar on text fields but I would like to have the 2 fields scroll together. I may well be looking the wrong way, I'm open for any suggestion.

    I've been able to figure out how to display a portal based on two fields using tech knowledge dbase file 104553... however, i was hoping I would be able to add new records based on the two fields...but because the relationship is based on a calculation, I cannot... I have a database that has about 8 fields and I once someone enters the date and vendor, reference number... I would like them to be able to open a portal based on DATE AND NUMBER and then just have to enter multiple records for client, description, amount (which is based on the date, number, reference #, etc)... is this possible and if so, how? thanks

  49. I've got a setup with the following 3 files, Companies, Contacts and Orders. Contact records contain a Company-ID key. Order records contain a Company-ID and Contact-ID key. Currently I'm showing all Orders for a particular contact in a portal on a Contact-layout. The idea is to show all Orders for the Contact's Company on a Contact-layout so that you can easily see the Orders booked on other Contacts for the same Company.     Hi, hope you can help me. I have a portal in a orders dbase which shows files from another dbase (films), I have a field which is called film id and a relationship to the films dbase via film id. I want to put in the film id in the portal and it will show all the details of that film in the portal. My problem is I need to add more than one record for a film on an order - I have put a tick in allow creation of related records, but it keeps repeating the last film id that was put in.     Ok. this is a hard one (I think). I have a self-related portal for currency of transaction in invoicing DB (US$ or CA$). I have 'CAD' and 'USD' in globals and used as the primary key to itself, and 2 relations for them. This works fine but I have to be able to show transactions from a date range. I can't think of a way to make a calculation field do this, since it has to be a range of dates. ideas anyone?

I need to know, however how to filter a portal in the invoicing system, AND to sort it. This is the problem: I have an inventory file, with an article ID. The articles in the inventory file have unique serial numbers (within the same article number) and a "best before" date. When selling products, I'd like to enter the article ID in a global field, and a list of the articles with this ID should show up in the portal, sorted by the best before date... The first by an invoice number and the second by a category. In other words, I would just like to show records that have the same number and category. My delimna is - if I have them enter a FIN(Finance Charge) or ADJ (Adjustment) in the Item Code box of the portal - I do not want this line item to be included in the Comission Calculation.     A customer database solution based on a relation between a Company db and a Contact person db. In the main layout of the Company db I have a portal row showing related contact persons of the company. This is the way it should work: Make a new record in the Company db, fill it out, select the first portal row, type in firstname, tab will bring in information from the Company db from a lookup.     I have invoicing database that contains a portal to items purchased. Since the store does US and Canadian dollars, each item has a price in both currency in the inventory database. I have the user select which currency for the transaction in the invoice and the lineItems database has a field for the current price, which is auto entered calculated number (price depends if its on sale and its currency) from the inventory DB. My problem is that, usually on the first portal row, since its a auto enter, the lineitem doesn't have the invoiceID to check for the currency or itemID, so it defaults. When performing, it will not get off the first portal and go to the next, however if I replace the "insert cal result" with say "set field" or anything else it will work.     A customer database solution based on a relation between a Company db and a Contact person db. In the main layout of the Company db I have a portal row showing related contact persons of the company. This is the way it should work: Make a new record in the Company db, fill it out, select the first portal row, type in firstname, tab will bring in information from the Company db from a lookup. This doesn't work proberly :-( The information from the Company db should be copied to the Contact person via the lookup when tabing in a new contact person, but only if a) I delete the just typed in entry in the portal and try again, or : if I type in a new entry below…

  64. Hello, I need a little help. I want to setup a web companion enabled database that will allow the user to query the database and get specific results based on the query. However, when the results are presented I want to eliminate any redudant values from the user's view. Here's an example of what I'm trying to do.     Hi there all, I'm sitting here going crazy trying to figure this one out! Can anyone tell me how to achieve the following? I have a database called "A" which contains all the serial numbers for any item ID in another db called "B". What I have done is in a third database called "C" made a portal that sees these serial numbers. This is all working fine, all i need to do now is be able to generate a list of the serial numbers in a different field in file C so that I can look into it from another file (D)'s portal.   68. This really has to be simple to do, I'm missing something.... I have two files: Organizations and Individuals and a join file OrgInd. In the Organizations file each organization has a serial number (OrgSN) and in the Individuals file each person has a serial number (IndSN). So the join file just is a list of OrgSn and IndSN. There is a portal in the Organization file that lists all of the people associated with it and one in the Individuals file that lists all of the Organizations that the person belongs to (and the obvious relationships between the SN's in each file so that the portal works).     Hi, I have this portal that holds records for 2 companies, say co A and B, I have been trying to get records for one company(only) that would show in onother portal. i have created a self relationship with a global field that holds records for both,the global field relates to a calculation field(text)that contains the name of company.(and created a script-set field(global field,"A") Problem is this is not working..its just producing strange results.     I have a job ticketing database that uses a self-join relationship to list all previous tickets for the client. (ClientID=ClientID) I would like to indicate which ticket the user is on by highlighting it within the portal by using a calculation to "get" a highlight graphic. Is there a way to do this without requiring a script to "mark" a record.     I am wondering if anyone knows a way around the following problem....I have found a way to avoid getting the "So-and-so is modifying this record" message when clicking into a portal while another user is also clicking on a record in the same portal. I did this by creating a separate record for each user. The only remaining time I get the "....is modifying this record" is when someone is scrolling the portal, not even selecting a record in the portal, and another user tries to scroll the same portal. It is very aggravating for myself and my users. Especially for me since I have them on totally different records, but dealing with the same portal.

    Hi Forum, I hope you can help me with this problem, I have 2 tables "Films" and "Orders". On my orders table I have 8 fields where you can put in the film id and the info will appear as we sometimes have to send out more than 1 film (I had to create a relantionship 8 times). What I wanted to do is have a portal in the films layout that could show where this film had gone etc.., but in the portal I can only put the 1 set of fields from 1 relantionship not the 8.     I've got multiple portals which relate to a scheduling database. Each portal shows what is scheduled to be printed on what day. This much works fine. If you change the date or any other data in the portal item, the change is reflected. However, what I'd like to do is put buttons in that allow the user to click a "+" or "-" to move the item forward or backward by a day. Unfortunately, once a button is clicked, it somehow locks itself to the record first modified, even if that record is now in another portal! What have I done wrong? thanks, Stanley

Here's what I have: 3 files - Events, Lists, and Notes For every event there multiple lists For every List there are multiple notes I have a portal in Lists that displays 2 fields from Notes.     Add a script that puts the current time & Date prior to entering the field. Or use the Last funciton to calculate the last time & date a record in the notes file was updated.

    I have a database that does an invoice. The list of items in the invoice is a portal to a listitems DB which is in turn related it a item DB (for item discription, amount in stock,prices etc). So it looks like this |Items| ---> |listitems| --P-- |Invoice| I want to be able to subtracht the quantity from the invoice from the item database. Right now i have it loop thought the portal with go to row ( first) etc. and with every item it runs a script in the itemlist DB to take the quantity off in the items DB. The first file is the name repository which stores information about the student. The second file holds records of classes taken with a unique identifier (the relationship) between student and class. So, each record has the student id, class number, description, date taken, etc. What I'd like to do (using the student ID relationship) is create a repeating field in the name repository which contains all the class numbers taken by that student (data from multiple records in the related file into a repeating field on the master).   89. I'd like to have a Running Total in a Portal. Each record in the portal has user-entered values, and the Balance caluculates OK. But I need a running balance in the portal, like a bank book. I need a calc field that numbers the people based on their sorted position in the subgroup.     I have a portal which I need to filter via a specific relation. However the relation needs to be by user name and Date. I have a field called "Username" and antoher called "DateCreated" From a series of popup lists I need them to be able to select the user name and then a date.     The blank line is there so that you can add a related record simply by typing new record information there. If you don't want to do that, Edit your relationship, and un-check the "allow creation of related records" checkbox. Then the blank line will disappear

    I have just inherited a soccer league registration database in FMP v4, which is new to me. Past practice has been to use the previous season's records to track the returning players for the current season. Once registration closed, all records marked ACTIVE are kept, and INACTIVE are deleted. Problem is, if one of these INACTIVE kids comes back next year the record for that player will have to be recreated. I've been trying to have a kid's record copied to another file (Active_Player) from the original file (All_Player) when the player registers for the current season. Being new to FMP, I'm not sure if I should be learning about scripts or portals or something else. …

I would like to know if there are any known database issues/problems with the following: My user can view, alter and create records in Child file portal from within the Parent file. When the new record is created in Parent, the PK auto-number is given to the Parent record. But to make a relationship, the user needs to mannually type this number into the portal Child record. I wrote a script (based on another relationship to avoid cercular reference) to copy this auto-number and paste it into the related FK field in the portal, so when the user clicks the button the relationship is created automatically.     ok. I know this works because it works fine in my other database but for some reason in this database i'm working on, i can't get the delete portal row script to work. I have a button at the end of my portal row(s) that has the script Delete Portal Row (that's the only step in that script). In the portal set up i checked the "Allow Deletion of portal records" box and also in the Relationship i checked the "when deleting record..delete related records". But, for some reason when i use this script, it deletes ALL the portal records (in that one portal, that is) AND THE WHOLE "parent" record that contains the portal.     I have been trying for a long time to create a new portal. I have file A and File B. This is a conference in which a person can register for 20 different classes from a choice of let's say 80. I want to be able to enter the class no. in the portal and have the class name flood in from my Classes Database. I am having no success - even went to an extensive class on this. I have looked through filemaker help to no avail.   100. database is for reservations. on layout #1, it holds showdate, showtime, showday, customer name on layout #2, I have created a portal, using a self-join relationship using 2 fields. field 1 is showdate on layout #1. field 2 is a copy of showdate, which I have placed on the portal. the portal is using relationship showdatecopy to showdate.
