FileMaker Server General Discussions

  1. Hi, This may sound stupid but I've been looking for this for 3 hours now. I'm hosting about 30 different files, but when my client goes go file open remote, it only sees home. Now I'd like to add some files to that "remote" list on Filemaker Server 8.5 on the Mac, but I can't get it to work. Can anyone please guide me in the right direction? Robin

  2. Hi, I created an online ordering system using FMPro 6 unlimited and FMP server 5.5 with IIS. Somehow, internal users can place orders online, but outside customers cannot. If anyone knows what the problem is, please let me know since I've been working with this for awhile and still can't make it work right. Thank you.

I'm a physician, and part-time hobbyist-programmer. the institute that i work for asked me to set up a DB to analyze QA data from our clinics in the field. 4. Hello! I use Web Publishing with FMS9, and I have a few issues regarding its integration with Apache. My primary concern is that it insists on including its own server-status config into httpd.conf, which in turn has an AddDefaultCharset directive. This turns on the charset header globally, which interferes with the sites hosted on the same server. Is this absolutely unavoidable? Why is it so important for FMS to have Apache serve pages with an UTF-8 header added? I tried adding an "AddDefaultCharset off" line after the FMS Includes, which solved my problem temporarily, while I could access my databases too. Too bad anytime I update the deployment opti…

This one is not willing to open files remotely due to 'can't find host on network'. I had deleted preferences files, reinstalled under different username administrator, root and etc.. all the posibilites that could alter the network preferences on FileMaker Pro. Thank you.

  6. Hi. Has anyone had any experience getting data in/out between MS Exchange and Filemaker? I need scheduling, resources and such. Possibly email too. I know there are some possibilities using Outlook and plugins, but I would prefer to be able to integrate this at the FM server level directly with the Exchange server. I don't know what is possible with Exchange, ie. ODBC, XML or what... Anyone have any ideas on this? Cheers, Andreas

  9. I just downloaded the trail version of Server 9. I uploaded my database and it works fine being hosted. However, unlike the sample file in the databases section of server, my database does not have all the little check-marks for what options are available. There are check-marks for Pro, IWP, and ODBC/JDBC but not XSLT, XML, or PHP. I really want to practice using the PHP site assistant before I invest in the full software. Do I have adjust my database file to enable these items? The sample server file works fine with the PHP site assistant. Any ideas?

  10. Hi everyone, We have two servers listed as favorites in Open Remote. Both servers have their own licensed copy of FMS9. One server (called Development) is currently housing our files (while being designed) and they reside in Databases. They are being served. The other server (called Production) USED to have files in it which were served. That was unserved and the files removed. But still ... when I open FM9 and select REMOTE, both servers show in my favorites list (all good) but ... if I click that second server 'Production', it still lists those files there! And I can select them. Of course it then says they aren't there but why are they showing at all? …

Hi! We have a rather strange problem. We are using XML to insert and edit our Filemaker database. We use commands like: "http://admin:[email protected].*/fmi/xsl/login.xsl?-grammar=fmresultset&-encoding=ISO-8859-1&-db=Johner&-lay=Image_Searchword(W)&Archivenr=557024&Id=281&Searchword_priority=50&-new" But after a while with inserts and edits the commands goes slower and slower and finally the WPE "dies" more or less. Then If I reboot it it workes fine again for a while. Anyone have any idéas about this problem? Regards Joakim

It looks as though the FM Pro clients are processing the script faster than the server can handle it (even on slower PCs), because by adding a simple 2 second pause or a flush cache to disc to the script corrects the problem. 60. Server 8 has 3 other databases open, and all is well with those. This 4th database will not open. It is located in the same shared folder as the other 3 databases, and has the same permissions. Sharing is turned on in the database (I have tried it both ways). I brought the file over on a flash drive to mitigate permisions issues. I also tried matching permissions with a file that works. When I start up the server, that file shows CLOSED, and when I try to open it, it blinks, stays closed. I can't figure out anything else to do!! What am I missing???

  61. I've a db with 45 data files (this was originally written in fm3, upgraded to fm5 then migrated to fm7) Two of my files will have their "Network access to file" changed from All Users to No Users and then fall off the network. Closing the file, opening it in FM and resetting it to All Users and then re-opening in Server gets the file back online. I can't figure out why this is happening. We did the migration to 7 weeks ago, and this problem is just showing up. Thanks for any help.

  62. This morning, I needed to make some configuration changes using FileMaker Server 9's Server Admin Tool. When I tried to open the tool, it went to a screen that showed the tool was checking for updates. It does not get past this screen. It has worked fine previously, and no changes have taken place that would affect the tool. Files are continuing to be hosted, just not able to be managed with the admin tool. Any thoughts? When I upgraded from FM8.5 to FM9 the LDAP settings were removed. Is there any way of preserving these settings, incorporating them in the 'assisted install' file or any other way of accomplishing this? I have several hundred upgrades to do and I don't want to have to do this manually.

From my time here at this forum, I've learned that the fastest way to make a FileMaker expert faint is to tell them that you have a database stored on a server and each user is opening it individually. So I won't admit that it happens here in my office. : But IF it were, I'd be repentant and want to change. Our (hypothetical) challenge is that our file server runs Linux. So installing a copy of FileMaker there that other people can open remotely from doesn't appear to be an option. Half of the other computers in the office are laptops, so the files can't be served from there as they go in and out of the office. The others are used very regularly, and I'…

  73. We are currently running FM Server 8 on a Windows 2003 server. Windows 2003 (32bit) has a limit of 2GB for page file size. From what I can tell, FM Server is still 32 bit, so even if I upgraded to a 64bit server, I would still be looking at the 2GB page file limit. Unfortunately, our install of FM server is getting pretty close to maxing out the page file. Is the MacOS version of FM Server also a 32 bit program, or would it be able to fully utilize the MacOS 64 bit capabilities? Are there limits to virtual memory on an XServe vs a Windows 2003 Server? I would appreciate any advice I can get.

  78. Let me start by saying I know absolutely nothing about FileMaker. boohoo I work in the IT dept and I have one user that has FileMaker. This is the first in the 8 years I've worked here that he's had a problem with it. The issue is...he cannot open files that are stored on our server. It is not a "FM server" (we are not using server/client setup), just a windows server. What supposed to happen is that when he opens the project it prompts for a password. IT will not do this. It will open FM, but hangs and never prompts for password. Actually ends up killing the ssytem and I have to power off. However, I copied the files from the server to his hard drive…

Hi All, I have a client that has Server 8 advanced installed on a windows box (I failed to note whether XP or server version OS), and uses windows administration sharing to get at the drive remotely. This did allow dragging down files to a local client machine, which with no OS sharing turned off, that I am familiar with, would allow. Now windows is not my (preferred) environment. I understand the requirements about system level sharing not being allowed, and have underlined that from the start. The IT person was of the opinion, that admin sharing was different to ordinary system sharing; but they are not FileMaker savvy. Can anyone illuminate me on thi…

Hello, we've finally begun our transition from FileMaker 4 to FM8 with FM8 Server (yes, version 8 - owned for year and never deployed ). It has been decided by the higher ups that the first phase will be converting all existing files to fp7 and continue to use as flat files while the new relational databases are being built. My question is about opener files. What is/are current practice(s) in this regard? Currently, with FM4, the files are hosted on a server, and the first to open the file becomes host.
