Does anyone know how to change the port for IWP in FM Pro Server advanced? Strangely it is missing from the manual ... but then again so are most things, so maybe it is not so strange after all. It is easily done in FMPro adv! thanks in advance - Anatole

We've got a database that publishes job postings on the web, controlled with privilege sets. After the job deadline passes, we do not want users to be able to see the job posting. I can easily set this up with forced date-specific searches or something like a PostOnWeb field with a value of Yes or No. This works, but it doesn't prevent a knowledgeable FMP user from editing the URL to include these excluded records. I'm asking whether we can keep records in a table but essentially "turn them off" so they cannot be accessed on the web, period, but still remain in the table for archiving purposes. Anyone know how to do this?

I am running FMP Server 8.0v1 on an X serve running 10.4.8. When I enable the secure connections option in the FMP Server Admin (and perform the required restart), my databases no longer show up in the server admin or to a FMP8 client. The event log shows that SSL is enabled, and the databases have been opened. These databases all work fine when the secure connections option is not enabled. When I look back at the FMP Server8 Install Log, it references a directory called /Filemaker Server/Tools/fmiCA and some cert files being generated there. The fmiCA directory no longer exists, although I do have a root.pem & server.pem file in the Tools directory. I am…

I have FM Server 8 advanced running on an OSX server and it is serving website and databases through a router. I can connect flawlessly to the databases using PCs and Macs with different browsers when I am on my internal network, but I have problems connecting to it externally from the Internet. When I log on to http://abdm.dyndns.org:80/fmi/iwp/res/iwp_home.html from a Mac it works perfectly, but when I try it from a PC using Firefox or Explorer the port gets dropped off the address and I get the homepage header only with no links and no databases! Is it a port problem? I have moved the router admin to a different port, but don't know how to change the port on FM se…

I have a .bat file stored in the directory C:Program FilesFileMakerFileMaker ServerDataScripts which activates a trigger.fp7 file in the same location. If i double-click on the .bat file it opens the trigger file. If i however make a scheduled task run the script nothing seems to happen. It runs the schedule with no errors but doesn't seem to activate the .bat file. I have tried various different .bat files and none of them seem to open from within a schedule. Confused...

I have OS 10.4.8 and FM 8 server on G5 mac. I just converted a FM5 solution to FM8 and the whole thing runs well on a single computer. I transfered the folder with all the files into the data folder inside FM server folder. I opened the solution from a client on the network but it will not open that one file which was previously accessable while running outside the Server. It does open all the other files in the folder though. Prior to conversion, I did "recover " the file successfully. So, why won't the server open that only lone file. Thanks in advance for all those great minds that take time out of here busy day to answer the needs of us, weaker minded…

I'm currently running FileMaker Server 8.04 Advanced on a Mac OS X 10.4.6 Server. In getting this setup, the Admin Console talks with the Publishing Engine fine when SSL is NOT enabled. However, as soon as I turn on SSL via the Server Admin program, the Admin Console claims that the Publishing Engine is not responding. (In addition to the error message at the top of the Admin console that says "An unexpected error has occurred.") The exact message I see for the WPE is "The Publishing Engine is not responding. If the Publishing Engine has not yet been configured, click here to continue." All of the components are running on the same machine. I have all the ports…

I'm running IWP services on an ISP-based FM8 server advanced. My question is about global fields which count visitors to the site and selected pages (these fields are a related side table). The fields are incremented in the scripts used to navigate to pages. Can a large number of simultaneous users ever throw off these counts? Every few weeks one or two of my counts are jumping off by many thousands.

I am running Server 8 and FMP 8.5 on the client machines. I recently copied and moved a file onto my laptop to update it. I've made the changes, changed the name slightly (through a "save as") and cut and pasted it back into the database folder under server. After several hours of trial and error, I've finally realized that I can have either the original version of the file, or the new one show up in the remote list, but not both at once. I figured this out through Server Adminstration, and going to the Datbase Node and closing one, which allows the other to open. So, what I really need is for both to run at once. With earlier versions I could save the background DBF…

Does anyone have a way to start Server 5.5 on MacOSX after the computer boots? I would like to use Energy Saver to shut down at 1:00am, then start up at 5:00 am, use Login items in Accounts preference panel to start Filemaker Server Config, but then how do I click the "Start Server" button unattended??? I would like to refresh the databases to reset the Today function, as well as having a daily reboot to refresh everything :-).

Have you had stability problems with FM Server and Mac OS X? I had big trouble with OS X 10.4 thru 10.4.2 and FM Server Advanced 7v2 and 7v3. My machine would become unresponsive every 2-3 weeks, requiring me to force-reboot and restore from the latest backup. I've been running OSX 10.4.3 and FMSA7v3 now and have 56 days of uptime without issue. So if you are looking for a stable combination, I'd suggest you try this.

I have a LAN system setup here 1 host (FM 8 Advanced) and 3 (FM 8 Pro) clients. DB runs from host on Win 2003 Server OS and the clients on Win XP. I never had problems with remote host sharing nor setting it up. System has been running for almost a year. We're going to add another pc which will have FM Pro 8. Using the trial cd, we installed FM, and run it trying to access remote host. This is the error: "FileMaker cannot share or be a client of a file because the networking stack could not be initialized" Tried re-installing sw 3 times, still gets this message. This has never happened with prior installs in other pc's. Please help, I am getting a headache. Th…

I'm trying to get responses back from the Web Publishing Engine. I'm using examples from the documentation. When I use http://filemaker.dealexpress.com/fmi/xml/fmresultset.xml?-dbnames I get a response of the database names. So that's cool. Then I try https://filemaker.dealexpress.com/fmi/xml/fmresultset.xml?-db=Products&-lay=Item%20Overview&-findall And I get Error Code 802. I look in the documentation and that code says "Unable to open file." But nothing about why or how to fix the problem. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm playing around with using "robot" users under OS X, and wanted to bounce around some ideas/tips. By "robot user" I mean a filemaker client that is connected to a filemaker server which processes various tasks automatically by staying in a ScriptMaker loop. This is sometimes necessary because many tasks can't be done from the filemaker server itself (such as sending an email via IWP, exporting data to PDFs, etc). Generally, this user has a dedicated mac all to themselves. Here are some ideas/questions I've had: 1. For sending emails, I have found that a robot user works pretty well. Configure apple Mail with the proper settings, etc. One probl…

FileMaker gets confused and opens some files on the server and the rest on the local machine. My fear is that if i have two identical solutions on two seperate machines on the same network a user may begin opening files on one server and then switch to the other. can anyone advise me if this is a potent…

Tried re-installing FMS and same results, then un-installed FMS and used FMP 8 to host the files and they all show up remotely... What am I doing wrong, shall I re-install windows?

I ran into a problem that puzzles me (and haunts me). I just upgraded a file to be run on FM server 8 and it no longer opens to the "Normal" status. I have checked the usual suspects (fmapp checkbox, multiuser status etc, ran file maintenance programs) but everything seems OK. Also 3 other files on that server open OK. The file opens w/o any problem or error report locally using FM8.5 Advanced, also on the PC where the server runs, using a local FM-Pro 8, but when I try to start up all files with FM-Server, the Normal status flashes up for a millisecond for the problem file, then closes again. The upgrade did involve some minor scripting but as far as I kno…

Am using FMS 5.5 Unlimited (not limited to x users). Currently serving about 30 databases (including related files). Suddenly getting the error " cannot be opened because it would exceed the host's capacity. Try again later." I thought this error could only be sprung if the databases were opened via a mounted volume. My users are definitely not opening files in this way. They're all using the Hosts button. And, on my FMS machine, two fmserverd daemons are definitely running. Any ideas why I'm seeing this odd behavior? Thanks very much

I'm running FMS8.0 on Windows 2003. Using the Administrative controls, I've set clients to be closed out after fifteen minutes of idle time. FM states that the user will be made aware of this at sign-on. Neither the warning nor the actual client logout occur following any long idle period. Is anyone using this function, and if so are there tricks to it? I view it as an important security practice. :D

Any help sincerely welcome New (first time) installing FM server on a PC running Win2000 Pro. Installation went OK - and the sample files are open and being served across the LAN. So far so good. Then loaded a file developed in 8.5 Adv on a mac which will not be opened by FM Server. It stays "CLOSED". While other files are running fine. The file is set for Multi-user TCPIP sharing turned on. I suspect it may be a permissions problem, but all of the read & write boxes are checked for all users & groups in properties. Any idea what things might be keeping FM server from being able to open this file? Thanks again!!

Hi I'm running FMS 8 on a server loaded with Windows SBS 2003. The server is connected to a Network Address Storage tower and this is where i want the FM 8 database files to sit. Is it possible to change the location that the databases sit in with FMS 8. By default they seem to be located in C:Program FilesFileMakerFileMaker ServerDataDatabases and I wondered if there was any way of chaning this? If not can any think of another way of mapping the data to the storage tower? I don't mind if other data is mapped there too, besides the FM databases. Nick Lindwall

I am serving (FM Server 8 on Windows 2003 server) a database with global fields that users can change/update. The problem is that when the users quit out of their FM clients, the numbers go back to what they were before they changed them. This happens to me also (I am an administrator). If you turn off the FM Server service on the Windows 2003 server, and open the file with FM Client from the server shared folder, you can change the numbers in the global fields, and the updates stay. Anyone else run into this problem?

I hope you guys can help. We are running FileMaker Server Advanced 8v4 The system is constantly slowing down and often grinding to a complete halt, we think we have isolated the cause to users performing finds in certain fields, but this should not cause the system to crash surely. This is causing severe issues as when it happens everyone using FileMaker is affected. Looking at the server monitoring software we use, the processor is being heavily hit at the times of slowdown, over 60%, and there appears to be nothing we can do. I just upgraded our Server to 8.0v4 and clients to 8.5. Server 8 could not open 3 of the 8 files, so I recovered them and now it seems to work fine. Users are just fooling around with 8.5 now... Some things act a little weird...global fields show data that is temporarily stored for calculations and (so far) one script does not act as it did before. The script is perfectly right, all attempts to work around it did not bring any results at all! As a matter of fact it includes 2 of the 3 recovered files (the script works as a Report Central that searches in all textfields in all files). It's really weird because if I add a Pause/Resume script step to debug the script it…

Hi Guys, Ive got a bizarre thing happening here: I have four files, and I've tried hosting them on my server. 2 out of the 4 files seem to open (i.e hosted), the other two are closed. Whatever I do, I can't seem to turn them on. I've checked the usual suspects, i.e made sure the files are network [on], and cant seem to work out why the other two aren't hosted. My logs folder is empty so I'm not certain how to switch log control on. Any suggestions would be as always much appreciated, Im working on Server Advanced 8.0v4 and I've set minimum files to 5.

I'm setting up an old FM6 database system in FM8 and using the external user accounts via local accounts on the server computer (Mac OSX.4) I understand the account setups and creating groups to do group control of user accounts (I read the Server External Authenticaion tech brief which was fantastic by the way). The two things that I'm curious about are: 1. I originally had a database in FM6 (called StaffList) that had a list of all users by the user-accounts so people could see internal contacts. Is there a way to do this in 8---to have a database listing of all the external user-accounts located on the server computer? 2. Is there a way to manage user-a…

Hi, Stupid server scripting question from a dummy! I am "pushing" (cron job) from a MySQL DB into a folder on the puter that houses Filemaker Server Advanced 8.5. I then have written a script step (importing records) from a FM client on a remote machine that accesses FM Server and "updates" a file and adds new records by importing from the MySQL file....and it works! Anyone know how to configure WAMP (Windows Apache MySQL and PHP) to work with Server Advanced 8.0v4. As far as I know Apache doesnt work with Server Advanced 8, so I use IIS which is OK and configured fine in my webrowser. But How do I configure the PHP installation of WAMP to work with IIS? All my fx.php example files are stored in the inet/wwwroot folder Cheers

I am looking to simplify the opening of a hosted database. Clients are Mac OS X.... for this database Database is hosted on Mac OSX Server Currently I think we have to launch Filemaker and Open Remote etc. I was hoping to "simplify" this process if possible. (These users are accustomed to opening a database by clicking on an alias from their desktop) Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi, I feel that i have correctly installed FileMaker server advanced with fmxslt and fmxsl guest account options selected. The fmi/config console is running with xml/xslt activated. Everything works fine with client side process but when i try to reach my pages for server side treatment, thoses pages are not found. If i undertood correctly, the xsl stylesheets have to be placed in the xslt-template-files folder of FileMaker server and the http://my.domain.com/fmi/xsl/stylesheet.xsl link is supposed to find its way... But thats not the case and i dont know why. Does anybody ever experienced that? Thank you for yous help...

We recently purchased Advanced Server 8 and installed it on a Mac OS X Server (10.4.7) box. I put up a play database and it seems to be just fine, but I have a few questions before we go live with it. - How do I make chron backups with the server console? I have a “scheduled job” called backmeup (remember it’s play mode). And every 30 minutes it will create a new backup in the Backups folder. But ideally what I would like is a backup of the HR database called HRBackup090606.fp7 (title of database with date). - I have read (mostly on this forum) that it is not recommended to make updates to the database while it’s live (or “open” on the server)…… so would I…

I am using Filemaker Server 8 Adv. to server some database file(s) i am currently developing on. This is rather convinient for me so people can already use parts of the System i am developing, and i am sure that my work is correctly backed up based on the schedules i set. But is working (defining fields, accounts, creating layouts etc) via a remote lan client on server hosted files safe to do? are there issues i need to be aware of? thanks for any advice, overrider

Hi I was wondering if there was a way of making sure a file was hosted before a script would be allowed to run. People take copies of the system and certain script should only be run on live data, not the local copy. I hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance. Orlando

My apologies if this has been posted before but I could not find it anywhere. Is there a way to share a runtime version of an application over a TCP/IP lan. My client wants a simple database application and I'm not sure that it is worth buying a seperate licsense of Filemaker for each machine. I made up a runtime version of the database and put it out on a file server. I created a shortcut to the executable file via a mapped network drive from one of the clients. However, this makes the runtime application run sooooooooo slow that its not worth openeing it. Has anyone ever toyed with what I am trying to do? Thanks to all in advance!

For my beta testing server (FMS8 on Panther), I have hosted my files, opened port 5003, pointed to my Internal IP, and tested with success (from an external open ISP as well as my own) connecting to my server via Remote, LDAP to my external IP address. However, from my client's office, it could not connect. Although it seems to establish the LDAP connect and the IP address shows above, and the network path IS correct (eg fmnet:/1.1.1.1/DBFile), the answer returned (both from PC and Mac, two sites) was: "DBFile.fp7" could not be opened. Either the host is not available, or that file [is not]. The assumption is that the firewall is preventing the required data excha…

"xfile is damaged do you want to continue yes no" I have seen this error on and off over the years and it seems not to be what it says. In fact choosing yes to continue seems to be the right answer. The files invloved are often different and were all "clean room developed" (never crashed- recovered etc). Recovery seems to do nothing to help. FM is generally very clear about a dammaged file and won't let you in untill it thinks it is fixed. Any ideas what this message means?

I'm sorry this is a dumb question for most of you but how do I put databases from my computer, (Windows Professional XP, Filemaker Pro 8 Advanced), on my server, (FileMaker Server 8, Windows XP)? Do I have to create a CD of the databases and go to the server and physically load them? I thought I could do this through the server Admin program on my PC? I'm not seeing that capability or I'm not understanding the instructions. Please help!

I'm just starting the process of upgrading my 60 dbs into FM7/8, but the FMS 7 speed when opening the converted files is concerning. FMS 7 is running on a G5, dual 2GHz and 2Gb RAM but this is significantly slower WHEN OPENING FILES than FMS 5.5 (OS9) on a G4/450 and 512Mb RAM. All the latest upgrades have been applied to both systems. Please understand that I know how to do the conversion so I already corrected the file references (not that these would affect FMS 7), however it takes 5 - 10 minutes to open the files, whereas FMS 5.5 has them (the originals) open in around 30 seconds. I don't have FMS 8 (yet) so can anyone tell me if there is a performance …

I am wondering what options I have as far as securing access to the FMSA Web Publishing Admin Console Current Setup DB Server (10.4 Server) -FMSA 8.0v4 Web Server (10.4 Server) -WPE 8.0.4.36 -Administration Console Server -Apache Currently the Admin console is running on port 80. Is there a way to secure the browser->web admin console connection using ssl/port 443? There is an option in the Admin console to restrict access to certain IP addresses. I have tried entering the IP of the web server as well as the host name. The enabled/disabled setting for this, or the IP/hostnames in the box does not appear to affect who can log in. I…

My question is simple. Can FileMaker 8.5 access a database that is hosted with FileMaker 7? How about the other way around(7 accessing 8.5). If a computer with 7 connects to a database hosted by 8.5, can it use 8.5's features like type ahead and web viewer. I think the answer is no, but I just want to check.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with trying a dual installation of FileMaker Server 5 and FileMaker Server 8 on the same machine? We are migrating from 5 to 8 with an upgrade, and I would like to have 8 up and running for testing if possible before the cut-over, and do not have the luxury of another machine to test on. I doubt this is possible, but wanted to ask. I haven't been able to find any info in documentation or searching forums. Thanks, Tony San Francisco Botanical Garden

We have two Macs sharing peer to peer; whenever the client is closed down the file references are lost resulting in 'file can't be found' when buttons pointing to the host dbase are clicked. Both computers have fixed IP addresses; linked over an ethernet LAN. I hadn't experienced this issue before changing to Dev7, maybe I am misunderstanding something but it drives me nuts.....

Hi all because of the sheer number of databases we publish in our organisation, we have more than one FM Server and as a result, more than 1 Web Server. All servers are FMPS8.0v3 and the web servers are FMPSA 8.0. We have set up the servers so that they all have the same identifiers, so that we can pull related data from tables on other servers. The problem is this, I want to be able to use some of the servers directly and would like to point to a secondary Web Publishing Engine? Will this work? Thanks for any advice. Regards Zip

Hi Everyone, I've had this problem with both FM Server 7 and FM Server 8. Using the FM Server Admin tool to connect from within the network is fine. However, connecting from anywhere else does not work. The firewall is set up correctly, allowing communication from anywhere to ports 5003, 50003, and 50006. Connecting to a hosted database from a external network (using Filemaker Developer 8 and Filemaker Developer 7) works without issues. I'm using MacOS X Server 10.4.7. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks very much, Cobra

I am havinga problem with FM Server 8 running on OS X Tiger server. While the FM shows that the backup scripts are running as configured, the backup files display their Creation Dates in the finder window under the heading "Date Modified." This makes it look like the backup script is not running. When you select and individual database and do a command-i, the correct modifcation date appears. Is anyone else having this problem or have an explanation as to what is happening here? Thanks!

Advice needed please! We are looking at a CWP project to allow users to set preferences for a non-Filemaker extranet with it's own userIDs and passwords. Our idea is to provide a parallel set of identical Filemaker logins to allow us to set up session IDs for each valid user and allow them to reset preferences - these would in turn update the extranet system through an ODBC connection. These users are only validated in the extranet, not in any external domain controlled by Windows or OSX servers. Currently we have 3000+ users of the extranet, and this may double in the next five years. As a once-off exercise we could probably create Filemaker accounts for these users an…

I'm writing for the company I work for. The owner needs some help with the server. We have a connection to the FM Server because it is showing the Samples files provided by FM on the server. We can't however, see the main database that we use. It says that the connection is "Closed". If he tries right clicking and Connecting to "All databases" then it says "Checking" for a split second and then goes back to "Closed". He would like to know how to restore the file...just where to begin. Any help? Thanks :(

Hi guys, hope you loved my topic : Very strange, on one PC, when i try to open the .fp7 file, i get the error filemaker could not share the file, another user on this computer is already using FM Pro to share this file bla bla bla.. But... there's not anyone - the message doesn't come up on any other PC's - and usually doesnt come up on this one. File sharing is turned off under Edit -- Sharing -- FM Network, IWP and ODBC. It's a 3 file network solution - 2 backend, 1 front end - backends are hosted on FMS. I'm not even trying to host anything on the client side and this particular thing has to run unattended and theres no way to avoid the stupid message - …

Hi Guys, Tried to do a search on the above error, but the search wasn't working in the forums. Has anyone encountered this error when they try to quit FileMaker server from the console. FileMaker Server just seems to hang when I try stopping the service, I dont know the impact it is having on my files when I continually switch off the server from the mains whilst logged into the operating system. Im using Winsows 2000 SP4 on an Athlon machine with 512MB of RAM. I also have Server Advanced installed, which have both been updated to v4.
