  1. I have been working with a particular file in FM8A and have been creating runtimes to test at different stages of development. Let's call it File A. I have read that some people were having issues with the runtime tool so I tested a couple of different files this morning. All the new runtimes I created were using single user files. I have left them all with the default .USR extension. I have created each of them with a unique name and their own folder. Here are the problems I encountered: 1. Every single one the .USR files I created this morning reference File A to open them and display the following error message: "This file can not be opened because it does …

  5. Hi all I have developed two program that I am getting ready to put on the market. While discussing this with a Acess programing friend of mine, he ask me a question that got me to thinking about how FM makes an runtime. As far as I can figure it off that FM developer does not bind the file to the runtime but creates an EXE file that take the place of FM. So anyone who has FM can open and modify my runtime solution once it has been download from my website. Is this correct? Thanks Lionel

I just started using FM Dev 7 and the Database Design report is very informative. When I used v5 I could get a simpler field list that I could print out in 1-2 pages. I use it as a checklist so I can ensure that all the fields are in the right layouts. When I run that report in v7 I get the field information but now it takes up about 10 pages in a table format. I am using a MAC and tried to copy the table into Excel/Word to get the field name list out of the table but it pastes as a text file not as a table. I thought that I could just delete the columns I didn't need from the report table. I need it so I can make a checklist that is not so cumbersome. Is there anythi…

When the report creation finishes, I get the primary frame that has the overall information about the total numbers of value lists, relationships, etc., but there is no other data. I trouble-shot a bit and discovered that the DDR creation will only work if I exclude the LAYOUT data. (Huh?) I tried a recovery on the file, but it had no errors in recovery and fixed nothing. Anyone see this problem or know how to fix it? My DDR is really lacking without any information about the layouts. Thanks in advance…

Here are a couple of potential "gotchas" that got me recently. This may already be documented somewhere, but it seems like the Database Design Report (DDR) does not detect references to layouts that are specified using the "Layout Name By Calculation" option in the GoToLayout script step. Also, if you rename a layout, any references to that layout using the "Layout Name By Calculation" option do not get updated automatically. This can produce some unexpected navigational redirects in a solution and can prove difficult to track down, especially since these layout references aren't captured in the DDR.

It turns out that FM7 inserted page margins of T= 50.84", B= 43.94", L= 62.95" and R= 69.85" during the conversion process. Has anyone else seen this?

Hi all- I just posted the other day about running my runtime file off the CD while installing the other files onto the users hard drive. I now realize that this will not work. I was thinking about doing it this way, but I am not really familiar with the ins and outs of Windows 2000 (typically use FM w/OS X): Install the files onto the users hard drive, but leave a file (probably text) on the CD that is to be opened when the runtime file is started. Can this work? Can I hard code a path with Windows 2000 to open that file? I am going to use Hexalock CD-Rs so if they copy that text file to their desktop, it won't work right and also, it won't …

Hello everyone- Here is my problem: I need to run the Runtime file off of the CD and place all the remaining relational/dll files onto the hard drive of the user's computer. The relational files need to be on the hard drive and not on the CD because I have complex searches where data is written to these files. Is this possible? The reason I need this done is for security. I am going to be using Hexalock CD-R's and wish to run my main file off the CD so users cannot give the CD to others without losing their access to the files. Thank you in advance. If this question has been posted before, please let me know. I searched and didn't find …

I have created a runtime solution but before I roll it out, I want it to be prepared for the next upgrade. I am trying to call a function in the previous solution file to export out all the records from my new solution file, so that I can import it into new solution file. But I could not get it to excute accross the solution. Can anyone show me what is the proper way to do an export and importing of the data into the new solution? Thanks. Rdgs, Stacey

  76. I have one table, Preferences, with a number of portals where users can change their preferences. For some reason I can no longer create new records with these portals. When I try to enter text in a text field, I'm told that the "Action can not be performed since the field is not modifiable." I'm using Developer 7. I could create new records in these portals up to a couple of weeks ago. And I can still create new records by going to the actual layout of these tables referenced by the Preference layout. I made some portals to these Preference-referenced tables on other layouts belonging to other tables. Here too I cannot make new records. However, I can stil…

Each Table houses various information that I have Summaries, and varied calculations. I create the layout/Report from the Main Table, I of course can get any information I want on the report from that table, including the relationalship data (in the body).. however, when I add the summary fields from the related table into the sub-summary and grand summary, the related table Grand Trailing Summaries are never correct, it will just give the last summary amount, not the entire summary amount I even tried some portal…

  78. [color:red]HOT TOPIC FOR EVERYONE. When creating a runtime application that will be upgraded after initial deployment, the ability for a client to migrate their data from the old to the new is critical. Being able to backup the data in general is at least of equal importance. My question, then, is a simple one: "How is it done?" If the number of possible records is dynamic, and I create an Export script to backup fields a, b, c, and d, how do I tell it to do this for all the records? Is each backed up record a separate text file that has to be reimported one at a time (say it ain't so!)? Thinking about it, if I created a "Save As" script in a runtime, the …

Import Records ( 3. Close File( I tried it out and realised that point 2 seems should have been instead. Am I wrong? Also, I could not figure out how to change to another table in the source file before importing the record (My file has about 10 tables) it seems to be always pointing to the table that is available when the file is first open up. Does anyone know how to do the importing correctly? Thanks.

Hey everyone, just a general question here, does a File Import Script Step import globals at all. It looked like we had an instance where fields that were matched by name (which happened to be globals) looked like they were coming over the in the import. Is any session data, or data in general coming across in the import? My concern is that the import might be slower if it is trying to import globals as well as the record data. Thanks in advance. J

Newbie-ish Question: Back in April, I was 100% convinced I needed the Troi Text Plug-in and I plunked down the $139 for the Windows Developer version. I installed it into my FMP Dev 7 and worked with it a bit - it's really quite neat. To make a long story short, I actually was able to do most of what I intended the plug-in for without it - until I hit a wall the other day - and now I need to incorporate it into my application. No big deal you say - and you are probably right - except I can't get it to work in my runtime version. What do I need to do differently so it will work in a runtime version of my program? I asked their support - but they just refer me to a w…

Anyone have experiences with protecting/encrypting their runtime solution? I'd appreciate your thoughts. Currently the client's security adviser is suggesting some kind of dongle. As this is a low volume distribution (20 - 40 copies,) I'm thinking this might make sense - but have no experience in this realm. It's not my responsibility to handle things like Customer Service or physically maintaining them or anything - that's the client's issue. Thanks for sharing your thoughts/experiences in advance, Mark

Recently one of my "clients" upgraded to Tiger, and all of the sudden my runtimes quit working. Of course, they upgraded Monday, when I was away at Devcon, with my PC laptop, so I can't really check out what could be causing this, anyone else had these kinds of problems? One of the users has Filemaker 7, and while it opens fine, as soon as they try to run my script, the whole application crashes on them. I've heard that this could have something to do with fonts, and maybe a few script steps like foundcount. Can anyone confirm this for me? Any suggestions are much appriciated.

My theory is that closing the main file at 12noon did not actually save the changes, and the changes were lost. It can solve the problem, but after few days/weeks, the problem will happen again. Just asking is anybody face the same problem? Or can give me some suggestion that able to solve the problem. 99. Hi. I have a problem with a solution I am trying to bind. Its only eight Filemaker files and I have been running them with test data, around 300 records. If I make a stand-alone solution with all the 300 records, its fine. If I delete all the records - to leave a 'clean' solution, it won't fire from the .exe. Is there a list of things to check before you bind a solution? Should you be able to bind files with no records in them? Any thoughts appreciated. Rosie.
