Does anyone know if there is a maximum length of a find request that can be used in FMPro - I have been having serious problems with the [FMP-linknext] etc tags - after clicking the third time an unexpected error occurs. The only way around this is by right clicking (hold click on mac) and selecting open in new window - then they work fine. Either that or, by taking out part of the url in the address bar -i.e. status=online& (a field in the database) it then also works to move through your results. Very wierd all this. any ideas. I've been working on this a couple of days now, with some success. But I've reached a sticking point. I'm trying to do basic javascript form validation. The application I'm working on is an existing database that includes field names with spaces (i.e. First Name, Last name...). I need to validate these fields as well as related fields. My validation attempts get stuck at the spaces and the ::. Does anyone have any solutions to these problems?

Just an observation...using instant web publishing causes some strange behavior when it comes to editing portals. The scroll bars for the Portals work sometimes, then all of a sudden they will just disappear. Of course Show Scroll Bars is still checked in the options. Strange behavior to look out for if you use Instant for anything. LR

I have set the Web Security db to exact search by the UserName & UserPassword fields in the Users DB. Here users can edit their own password/authentication information. I currently have a table, and in one of the cells is a CDML tag surrounded by [FM-Portal] and [/FM-Portal]. I would like to add another CDML tag to the same cell in the same table. This is easy enough if it is another portal tag. But the tag I want to add is NOT a portal tag. I have tried to configure it a number of ways by adding the [FM-record], but I cant seem to get the two to co-exist in the same cell. Either it is not possible or I am just placing the [FM-record] in the wrong place. I have posted one of my databases on the web using instant web publishing. I am using a Mac. When I am away from my office and try to connect, all is well, it works fine. But when anyone else attempts to connect, they get to the filemaker web portal splash screen, click the appropriate file, are prompted for user and password, then there is an error, it won't connect. Is there a way to open files automatically when a PC is rebooted? I know I can start filemaker pro using the startup command, but this is for the web using Filemaker Pro Unlimited. Need to have it startup and open five databases. Thanks!

I am following a tutorial in "Filemaker Pro 5 Bible" by Steven Schwartz and on page 580, it talks about publishing a database to the web. The instructions are to open your database, select EDIT>PREFERENCES>APPLICATION and then select TCP/IP as your network protocol. The problem I am having is that there are no options on the drop down menu where is says network protocol. I was connected to the web at the time, and I don't know if this makes a difference. Ok this is just weird. I have Unlimited serving a database and it started to just simply stop serving. Its up 24/7 or at least it should be but now after a while with no warning no indication you just simply cant see it online any more? It just stops serving. Its still conntected to the FM Server and I can go use it like there is nothing wrong I can access it through TCP/IP filesharing and get online the machine is running fine but Unlimited has to be restarted and then you can see it again? Then after a peroid of time it no longer serves again? Unlimited is the only thing running on it at all times? What the heck is up? Im out of ideas

I was just doing some experimenting with portals. I have a section in my current database where I have 4 fields that are for dates. When accessing my database thru the web, I do a find, and the web page comes up showing the record with the 4 fields and their dates. I thought I would replace the 4 date fields with a portal linked to a related database for the dates. This way I am not limited to just 4 date fields. The problem is that on my web page only the first date in the portal shows up. Any additional dates in the portal just dont show up on the web page. Hey List, I'm new to the list, but not to Filemaker, and I have a big question... We serve quite an active group of web sites from a 500mhz G4 running Webstar 4.4, Lasso 3.6.6, and Filemaker 5. We have recently been experiencing more and more hits, and the Lasso/Filemaker part of the equation is begining to become overwhelmed. We are about to buy a second computer, a dual 1ghz G4, the idea being that we will put Filemaker 5.5 on X on the new machine, and have Webstar and Lasso on the old machine running the Filemaker Remote Module. We don't have time to convert all of our old lasso to Lasso 5 right now, so Webstar and Lasso will have to stay runingon OS9 for now…

Hi. Does anyone know if it is possible to reference a field from the host page when writing an inline action. There seems to be very limited info on intratags and how you use them. I have entered the page under -db=db1 and are using the field rel1 to build the relationship to db2 where db1.rel1 = db2.rel2 (do you get what I mean??) I'm using a form that performs a find. I included <input type="hidden" name="User" value="==" in the form to force the find results to compare to an exact match only. So not if I do a find on "B" nothing comes up, but if I do a find on "Blake" then the correct record comes up. I'm trying to publish online when I click a button it searches for a form called "layout" which I deleted, and I renamed the form Customer...how do i reset the scripts to look for this file? I looked in the scripts and it appears to have the correct filename, but when I click the button in my browser it still looks for the deleted file. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thx.

I've created a web shop with FileMaker 5 (it's now hosted on 5.5 unlimited). The shop is supposed to send a confirmation e-mail to the customer once his order has gone through the system. It worked great as long as it was hosted on my machine on the local network, but when I moved it to another computer outside the network it stops sending mail. Once a user is prompted for a password and then they enter the web site containing the information from the FileMaker database, any subsiquent links that stay within that same string no longer require a password. Is there anyway on a subsiquent link to FORCE a password prompt to take place again even though under normal circumstances it would not be required? I have created this great chemical inventory database...now I want to put it on the web to allow my people to update their inventory by internet. I am using HTML & CDML along with Custom Web Publishing to try to get my database on the web. I am having problems with creating the pages to allow adding a record to the database. My problem is that I want to use conditional value lists that I have in FM Pro, but is there a way to recognize a value inputted in one field, to choice the correct value list for another field....without submitting the new record to the database? or do I have to submit, than use an edit form? I don't know if this is something new, or a known issue with Filemaker. I do know that we are not the only people to have this probem. Accessing Filemaker Ulimited 5.5 hosted on a Mac from the Internet using Netscape 6.2 immediatly causes Filemaker to lockup; without fail; every time. Have other people had the same problem? We have a sister company that is able to access one of our databases via the Internet. We are not using the Filemaker web hosting option. Rather, we are allowing in their IP address and sharing the database via IP. My questions goes to speed of access. Is there anything we can do on either side to increase the speed with which our sister company accesses the database. I have suggested increasing the bandwidth, but would like to hear any ideas anyone else has. Thanks for your help.

I'm using Instant Web Publishing with File Maker 5.5 Unlimited. I have 2 files that are published on-line. One is a large file of 56,000 records and the other is small with 2 or 3 records. The large file keeps disappearing from the Instant Homepage. Then I have to go to the server, physically close the file and then reopen it again. What is causing this file to appear closed when it is not. This happens at least once a day, sometimes twice a day. I really don't want to have to babysit the file constantly. Here is one I dont quite know how to handle. Serving up a database on the web with v5.5. Works fine. database comes right up. I want to make a little change. I want to add a layout as the default with a spot for a "Login" name with a submit button. If the login name matches a corresponding field from another layout I then want it to proceed to that layout and to JUST that particulat record. My thinking is then I can have clients log in and it would be a way that they go to the specific record JUST for them in my client layout, and then they dont have access or see any other clients records. Hello all I've read everything I could on setting up on the web. 1/ I've enabled WebCompanion 2/ I've enabled web sharing 3/ I've been using instant web publishing and now the database works when I test it using http://localhost/ 4/ Now how do I access it from another machine? The next step is not clear. Becasue I can call it using http://localhost/ I'm assuming all the cgi scripts have been written but I can't find them in the web folder in fM5. I have a web page that performs a search. Depending on that search result, a new web page opens (summary.html) with the correct CDML to show those results from my database. I am going to add a link on summary.html to link to another web page called help.html that is totally unrelated to the database. Is it possible to add a button in the help.html page that when clicked will go back the the original summary.html page and remember the search criterial used and show the same info. LR

We are currently using FM5.5, for about 50 users. We are planning to redisign our database shortly as there are a lot of design issues. We want to have a web interface even for our internal users. We already have a web site for our external customers, but we want our users to have a simple web interface to do their data entry. In my database I have some dollar amount fields (as an example they are formated like $500.56). There is a field calculation that adds them all up to a total. It is also formated like $2,125.63 When I show the dollar amount fields and the total amount field in cdml on a web page I get something like 2125.626875 I tried doing numbertotext calculation fields, and adding in a $ sign for good measure. Then linking the CDML to the numbertotext fields... We get this information thru the department of health in florida. We are tring to be able to fill in fields on the department of health webpage using the field data from filemaker. and then open the URL up to see the results.. Anybody know how to do this? No specific access privledges have been set in FileMaker...allowing easy web access to the html encoded web pages linking to the database via the web (no desire for users to have to enter a username and password to access the database). Hello. This is my first post, so I hope this is in the right place. We are operating a shopping cart driven by Filemaker. We are using inlineactions to grab data from multiple related databases and display them on a page. The first problem is that in Netscape 4.7, we have lost the browser scroll bar. Any thoughts? The second problem. We are using a redirect page to set a cookie (cartid). The redirect employs a javascript function, "go" to hide the URL. In Netscape 4.7, the page continues to loop and return a javascript error...even when we comment out the javascript... Third problem. (sorry!) I have a very simple databse setup for searching on designs I have. Is it possible to return a different URL if the user is outside the building? My router won't allow me access to the public IP internally. If I set the IP in a field to the internal IP tp the server, no one outside the building can get the pictures, vice versa for the public IP. As you can guess, I'm learning as I go... Here is something I was playing with in Instant Web Publishing... In my database layout I have a "Find" button and a "Submit" button. When clicking on the "Find" button via web browser when viewing the database, the page goes into Find Mode. You can then enter the criteria, and then hit the "Submit" (which uses the exit record/request script) to process the find. Here is the odd part. The pages automatically goes to some sort of a table layout (not one I have built in the database) that shows all the fields and records. Why does instant web published datbases looks different in IE and NS? Databases in IE5.5 looks almost like the filemaker layout. But in NS it looks awful.. I guess FM takes advantage of the IE activeX controls for XML. Has anyone noticed this? Any comment?

Just playing around with different options. If Using Instant Web Publishing can there be a button that runs the URL script (this part I know can be done) that brings up a .htm page with a CDML tag that references back to a specific field from that same record in the database. It is definitely not FM question. It is between HTML page and server mechanism for upload.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Under sharing for the set-up views for Web Publishing I activated Sort. I added 2 pre-defined fields (both fields were text fields). I then created a button using the Sort item. Now whenever someone hits the sort button from a web browser FileMaker crashes. Oh yea, this is using Instant Web Publishing. I am using custom web publishing. In my FileMaker Pref I have set the default home page to "summary.htm. And of course when I go to my ip address 63.xxx.xxx.146 summary.htm comes up with my database info. I notice if I change the pref in FileMaker to set the default home page to Built-In (instant web publishing) then a standard FileMaker page comes up with a link to my database. I am using Instant Web Publishing. I followed the instruction to the letter for limiting access on a record by record basis. Cant get it to work. Hoping someone has some input for me. Here is what I did: Created a new text field in my records called "record_created_by." I set the Auto Enter options to Creater Name. I created a new record and typed "orton" into the field "record_created_by." I created a new password named "orton." For the priviledges is chose Browse Records Limited. Well, first of all, you obviously have an error somewhere. I fear that it may be part of your "Restore" procedure and what is happening is that you keep restoring the problem. You typically see this message after either a crash or Force Quit without restarting the machine, as it seems to think that the same copy of Filemaker is already open. Restarting usually takes care of the problem. Am I correct in understanding that you ONLY use Filemaker to host databases to the web? If I am using Filemaker Unlimited AND FM Mobile and have a company of 60+ people who each have their OWN database that is web accessible (each different than the other), do I need to install my own runtime environment to be able to give them access to it, do I need to buy several copies of Unlimited, do I need to purchase a FM for each employee? FileMaker 5.5 Unlimited on Windows 2000 Professional (also tested on 2000 Server) Netscape 6.2.1 on a PC Netscape 6.1 on Mac Databases are shared via Web Companion. Internet Explorer 5, 5.5, and 6 can access the site with no problems. Netscape 6.2.1 crashes the site with 100% CPU utilization every time (tested from multiple PCs running 6.2.1)- sometimes the processor locks up immediately as the index page opens and sometimes it does not lock up until you actually query a running database but it always locks up. Can this page layout be redesigned? If so, where do I place the page that I design so it will replace the default layout? And what do I name it?

Don't ask why, but I need to insert pauses of variable lengths after submit requests in a sequence of pages. I have noodled around with javascript solutions but the syntax is impossible. Before I get further on down that road, does any one have a suggestion for inserting the pauses using cdml. Loops perhaps?

Hi, I'm making a change to our online employee contact list database so that administrators can make changes for starters and leavers ahead of time. I'll have a calculation field 'key' that is: If{Today change_date and status="start", "no", If{Today change_date and status="leave", "no","yes"}} where the 'change_date' field is the start/leave date. I'll then add key=yes to all the searches. The question is, is it a bad idea to use the 'today' function in a field that will be searched on every time? Is this going to slow the database down? I am experiencing a maddening problem. I have written a calculation in my database based on CurrentRecordNumber. I am taking data from records and having it display in a 5 X x HTML table. Record 1, goes in cell one, and so on. Obviously the first table cell opens the row, the last closes the row so I must know the position. My calculation works great adn gives me the right value, however when it is passed through web companion it displays the value as if I had found "all" records. For example my database show the calculated value as "1" after finding the right set and sorting them, however the web page displays "2", the value for the record if I'd done a findall…

Hi all I have a database that has a drop down menu that I use to select an item from a list of 20 further items, the following field then looks up that selected item and locates all sub items that are related to that selected item - this could number from 10 to 40 sub items. I read an article about how to do this a long time ago and since then I haven't been able to find it. I am using Adobe GoLive to create the site, and Adobe claims that GoLive will interface with a FMP5 database to serve up dynamic content.
