Hi there, Can you insert a pdf file as a picture in a container field. i know this can be done if our are using a mac OS but i am using windows and it doesnt seem to work. cheers

I have an ID system in my database which consist of 2 letters (always the same 2 letters) then numbers (which go up 1 increment for every client in the database....ie TB1, TB2, TB3 etc . i want to sort my db so that it is in order of numbers however I am unable to do this as the sort function rads it as text and organises it in order of TB1, TB10, TB100, etc how do i sort this?

Hi All, I am relatively new to FM database development, but find the best way of progressing is by asking the experts! . I am currently using Filemaker 6 and have bought the upgrade to 7, but have also bought Recruiter 1.1. I have not installed either as I am not sure that Recruiter 1.1 is compatible with FM 7? Can someone pls advise me? Since Recruiter 1.1 was just released I figure it might be compatible, but the specs still say FM6? Does anyone know if they are gonna release another version this year? Hi all: I am trying to move into more serious relationship design in FM7 and am, once again, having a bit of confusion adapting my Access/SQL Server knowledge. Using the example of a film production database: I have tables for Talent, Scenes, Locations, Film Info and Crew. Normally I would join all this data in a simple junction table with field names like: junctionID, MovieID, TalentID, CrewID - like that. This table would obviously hold the relationships between what crew and talent worked in what scene of which movie. All fine and well, but how does FM handle that? I can actually create this exact table I mention, but then how do I do things like enter…

Hi, all. I've been logging stats from FMS3 since mid-May. We run into occasional "system" delays wherein one user's activity brings others to a standstill -- the appearance of The Coffee Cup Icon. I have come to the understanding that this is usually due to FMS halting data distribution while that user's workstation does its crunching. Does this sound like an accurate assessment? Secondly, I am wondering if the stats I've gathered point to a weakness in our system that can be easily/inexpensively addressed. For example... I use FM7 in a peer to peer setup, with a dedicated machine as one of the peers. 2-3 users max plus the server. The file timestamp on the server is not updated during the day, even though the save every 10 minutes option is selected. Is the file actually saved or is the file just in memory. I realize that as long as the file size does not change, FM7 could just be replacing some file sectors. Advice please.

I was wondering if there was a way for Filemaker to see if a certain window existed and refresh it if it did, but create it if it didn't, so that a certain window could be "toggled" with a button, rather than getting new copies of the window each time the button was clicked. I tired using an IF/CASE statement with the WindowNames function, but it didn't work. Any ideas ?

I am having trouble 1. scripting to automatically attach multiple attachments, I see it gives option to select several files, but does not attach all files selected within the scriipt. 2. Hi all -- I'm thinking about yanking my website from my current host and hosting it myself in-house. My guess is I need FMP 6 Unlimited because my site is all CDML and incompatible with FMP 7. I would then get a T1 or SDSL connection with a static IP (currently using dynamic IP ADSL) and serving the thing on either an old G4 Mac or perhaps buy an XServe Mac. Am I missing anything important? Anything else I should think about? Harder than it seems?

I have attached a pdf file which shows the layout our company uses for it's quotes. I have been able to create a really great quote software (with more than a little help from this forum) but I am befuddled by how to create a report which looks like this. Using the list output and subsummaries I have been able to get the individual page layouts to work, but I cant figure out how to make an opening page and a final summary / terms page. I need to make it where the entire document is created and printed in one step or my boss will never accept it as a viable option to the old software we use currently. I would love some help with cross-platform FM->Entourage/Outlook task. I know Applescript/VB script can handle this, but my scripting is poor. All I want is to send a mail message to Entourage/Outlook with to, from, subject, body and ATTACHMENTS. I have a database with 5 or 6 date fields, all formatted as MM/DD/YYYY. Our client is HQ'd in Europe and so wants the dates to be DD/MM/YYYY. I spent some time looking in the field options dialog boxes, but was unable to find anything. Is there a way to make FileMaker 7 do European dates? Thanks, Matt

Hey everyone, I have a text field that I use to keep a log of dates. Each date is seperated by a return and they are all in the same format. I have a need to get a count of these entries for a specified month. So my question is; is there any way to get a word count that is constrained by a certain value. For example, a word count on all words that start with 8. I am using filemaker 7 in a mixed platform setting. Thank you for any help.

I'm looking for a trick to be able to present the user with a dialog before they exit FM to verify that they really wanted to exit... I have users who occasionally "hit the little X" to close the window and inadvertantly wind up closing FM instead of just the window and I'm trying to protect the innocent from themselves... Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated....

I have written a little application what I would like to do is release it with some inbuilt protection. at present I have two data enterers who input results from a very long questionnaire into filmaker 5 database. So i should end up with two identical files. What i want to do useing fm7 is to be able to compare these files and get a report of any fields which do not match between the two different data enterers. So I can check for data which has been incorectly input...any ideas how I can do this?

Not sure if there is a problem with this in windows or not, but I ran into this problem in a run time solution this morning. I was running some reports for records that have a container field in them, I printed the report about 40 times with different non overlapping record sets then I started having no record found errors when running my printing script which just goes to a different layout in preview mode and then prints. I noticed a slowdown after about the 20th record set but didn't think much of it. I had to restart the runtime solution to get it to clear out. Besides checking for error 101 (record missiong) unless I should check for some other error, how might …

Running Filemaker 7.0v2 on Windows 2000 finding a serious problem with a true type font. The barcode font BARS12.TTF (version 1.00), which works just fine with Filemaker 6 for displaying a postal address label barcode, fails to render in Filemaker 7. An ordinary (plain) text field, in both a new test database and in a converted database I've used for years, refuses to accept formatting to this font in Layout mode, though the font shows in the font list and shows as a truetype font. can anyone tell me what version Claris filemaker Pro might be. I purchased about a week ago an upgrade version of Pro 7 and the box says that versions 2.1 through 5.5 qualify until the 17th of sept. i bought this on the 16th so i need to return it if my version of filemaker doesnt qualify. i have a feeling that it might not but not sure. the disk i have only says Claris Filemaker Pro for Mac. I am just now coming back to the mac. Hello all. I'm new here and am glad I have found this place. Looks to be a lot of good information to be had here. I have just migrated a client from v4.0 to v7.0. It went as smoothly as can be expected. But now there is a strange behavior with some fields that are defined as pop-up lists. What is happening is that in a repeating field situation, when entering the field and the list is to be displayed, the screen scrolls up and if the pop-up list box does show, only the first 2 or 3 lines are shown right at the bottom of the screen. I'm wanting to be able to keep a set of records, some assigned invoice numbers and others that have no invoice numbers but I want them all in one database. What I had in mind was being able to click on a button which would enact a script to assign a unique invoice number. Since my invoices are sorted by year and look something like "0484323" with the first two digits being the last two numbers of the year. I have created a group and password with limited privliges within the database. I set the database to automatically enter that password at opening, and now I can't get back in with my password to access the entire file and make changes. The "change password" option is grayed out, as it the ability to change any of the document preferences, including the "login with this password" option. Any suggestions? Or I have locked myself out forever.

My Filemaker User manual explains that the match field in a single criteria relationship is connected to its related table by a single thin line if only a single record can match (e.g. a serial number). The line connecting match fields has a little "fork" symbol on the end if it is possible to match multiple records. What does it mean when the line connecting Match Fields has a little "T" at the end? I have some tables with this symbol and they don't seem to work. Thanks!

I checked the authorizations, checked FMM preferences, synching with the folder opened (running the applications), tried to re install both of them, and no way. I have version 7. I've imported a list of names from an Excel table. The fields all get imported fine, first name, last name, address, etc. Each record contains a date field in the form of 03052005, 09102005, 07022005, etc. I've defined this field in Filemaker as a date field, but even after I do that, these entries do not change to the "9/25/2005" which is the form my creation and modification date are in. And I cannot seem to be able to sort the records by the date field. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? [email protected]

Hi, Im trying to exit filemaker (7) in the presence of validation. I have some fields that require input, and the validation option works great. But I would like to have an exit button in case someone needs to exit. My problem is that using the validation wont let you exit untill you eneter the fields. Is there any way to use the validation, but if someone presses an "exit" button FPM will just drop it and exit. Im new at this so sorry for the newbieness of the question. Thanks Albert

This question may not be a big one for you, but for me (a newbee) its big. This is what I'm trying to do. I have 2 tables. I'll call one Pies and the other Fillings. You can then go to the Pies table, create a new record. In the new record is a drop down menu with the names from all the records in the Fillings table. I've been able to do this so far. Filemaker setup is Server 3 on MacOS 9.1/ASIP6.x, Client 4.1 running on MacOS 9.2.2. Clients are configured to access the server via TCP/IP. When they go to file -> open -> hosts, they get the squigly arrow (network busy) for up to 10+ minutes before the hosts listing actually appears. Any ideas on what could be causing this? This started happening after a demo of FMP 5.5 was installed on one machine on the network (since been unisntalled), although I suspect the timing was coincidental.

I am trying to schedule a script and have 2 problems - an answer to either one will solve my problem. Loop Script - seems to stop after a certain number of loops, sometimes it will last 100's of time and sometime only a handful - it appears to be related to activity on the PC or memory as it work perfectly all weekend when nobody is in the office but at a peak period lasts only 4 or 5 loops. It is a send mail script with no "end loop if" option. Filemaker Cannot Be found and is required to complete this operation. I see that FM7 has fixed one annoying attribute of prior versions. With FM5-6 "Unsorting" records in a list view would not advance the window to the record currently being browsed if the list spanned multiple pages. "Sorting" records was even worse. It would reset the current record to the first record in the new sort order with no easy way to go back to the record that was being browsed prior to the sort. These are both fixed now. Thank goodness.

I am writing a solution where I want to post information from some records in one table to another table. An example is: I have a work order that I want to post to a General Ledger. In the GL I need to add new records from a sort in the work order table. I am having trouble getting it right. Do I create the script from the Work order table or from the GL table? Do I need multiple scripts (one finding records and the other adding new records) It feels like It should be easy but I'm not getting it. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Cindy

Hey guys, quick question. We're trying to install FMSA7 on an IIS6 box running 2003, and are less than successfull. Installation looks like it goes through ok, but when trying to pull up the WSC admin page it gives out a 404, page not found. Tried installing on another box to capture registry entry's, installed files, and building a virtual directory for it, but none of it works when beinging it back to the 2003 box. I can install it on an XP machine, 2k machine, etc, just not 2003 with the latest and greatest IIS. Anyone have any clues? Or using a successfull combination of II6 and FMSA7?

I believe I've found a nasty problem in FM7 (Developer). When importing a comma delimitted text file FM7 chokes on a 13 record text file, and only brings in 2 lines. (FM6 & FM5 correctly bring in all 13). Looking at the data, I see a double quote symbol at the end of a line that I'm sure is causing the problem. If I substitute a word (Inch) in lieu of the symbol(") fm7 import works ok. This is a serious problem for anyone importing raw text files from external sources (main frames, other applications, etc). Definitely not plug for plug compataible with the previous version - can anyone here speak for FileMaker acknowledging the problem? I can provide examples if need …

Im trying to set up a portal with 2 relationship criteria: a text tag "Amounts Outstanding" and a Date tag (week of year in this case) to list all outstanding amounts receivable over a one week period. I have already created a similar portal for Amounts Payable based on month and year which works fine, but this second one won't work for some reason. It works with just the "Amounts Outstanding" tag but not when I introduce the second "week of year" criteria. I want the portal to show only one week's worth of payments at a time so the list won't be too long, hence the second criteria. Any advice very gratefully received.

Hi, I am in the process of converting our FM5.5 data over to FM7. This has not gone well. Maybe someone can help. So far, I have two large issues. All the dbs from 5.5 used helvetica as the standard font. In FM7, it looks correct on the screen, but when we go to print the text, formatting is all over the place. For instance; We use quite a few checkbox fields. They look correct on the screen, but when we print it, the text runs off the side of the page and the boxes are no longer lined up where they are in the layout. Sounds like a font problem, so I change the font to Arial and it now prints OK. So, what's up with that? The dbs worked fine in FM5.5. Why don't they work…

In Filemaker 6, you could create a value list with 2 fields and you could keystroke the 2nd field chosen to view but it would insert the data from the first field in the value list. In Filemaker 7 when assigning both fields, it will only keystroke the 1st field and not the 2nd field. Is there a work around for this problem. Thanks, Sam

Hi, I am building a fairly simple accounting system for myself. My accountant however, has made it a little more complicated by suggesting it be a double-entry system. To this end, I have added a Table for the 'Position at Bank' (balance) for the start of my fiscal year. I have several different bank accounts to include balances for, but I thought it best to create a single record per annum, with a separate field per account. Hi, I have used customer postcodes and field that required a 'Unique' postcode field value during data entry to avoid creating duplicate customer records on my database. This worked well with FileMaker versions 3 and 4.1 but with FileMaker 7 the onscreen warning of a duplicate does not trigger until I have finished keying-in all the address and customer data. Earlier versions of FileMaker picked up the duplicate as soon as I tabbed out of the postcode field. I'd appreciate advice if anyone knows a simple way to get round this? It still seems to work in the 'old way' in FM Dev 7 in Windows XP... but not on the Mac in OSX!

I've successfully convert my FMP5 (Mac) dbs to FMP7 (Mac) but I still have a pb with some export/import scripts: when a script import data from another *fm database*(and only in this case), it says that text is at WIndows/ANSI format (it is *not*: it comes from a Mac) and it converts some all accented characters. Does anyone know how to modify this default setting ? Thanx in advance.

I've built a website with a lot of CDML & FMPro queries in http links. I'm using web companion to serve the pages out. Problem is the pages are slow to load, it waits for FMU to finish searching the database records before it appears. My database has around 10,000 records and it runs on Windows 2003 Server. Would running FM Server help? Any help is appreciated.

Dear all, I am administering a shared database running on an FMP 5.5 Server and accessed by a mixture of v5.5 and v6 users on a variety of Mac and PC platforms. As staff leave and are replaced, the users' identites are getting out of sync with the people actually using the system. I have a portal which shows documents (.doc or .pdf or .xls) that are associated with a person. I have little upload buttons (for insert file) and download buttons (export field contents of the container field) on each row of the portal. My problem is that the records that have a few files in the portal take far too long to load. It's so slow that you really can't "browse" the records. Is filemaker really LOADING those container fields into memory every time you browse to a record :?? jeeeez... is there any way to avoid that or change the caching on Server to help with this : I thought I could not use file references because the users are connecti…

The problem I have is I don't have FileMaker Pro Advanced, and I would like to be able to send data from a HTML form to a database, but apparently it uses this grammar that is included in the Advanced version for genarating the request to the server. Is there anything that might be a negative by hosting a database solution with FM Server Advanced (7) on a Mac (OS X Panther) to Windows users that would cause trouble or be a problem? I have a client that uses all Win machines...but I'd like to be able to program some Applescript features and for that I need a Mac to serve the database. Thanks!

I'm trying to make a relationship from one file to another - as you do! I have other relationships set up from the file I'm trying to make the relationship from. In "Define Relationships" I chose the file I wanted to link to and when the table came up, it couldn't see the fields from that file so I can't make a link. What could be causing it to not see the fields? How do I fix this??

Well, I'm a bit of an FM newb and I managed to lock myself out of my database. I made an administrator account, but I can't find any way to log into it. The database is set to automatically load a limited "guest" account and I can't find anything in the manual or help file that tells me how to switch users. I assume there is SOME way of calling up a logout or new login dialogue, right? I should add that when i go to the only place I can where "user" can be changed, under preferences (in FM7pro), I can change the user to anything I want with no results. The default admin account and the "administrator" account I made don't prompt for passwords at all and stay in guest pr…

Ok. In < 7 data flowed only one way. And the left side could be anything but the right must be indexable. In 7, data flows both ways. But if the left is a global, how can it? Can someone just help me clear my thinking on this concept? Isn't there still a left and right side? Or is that the old entity-based thinking. It's probably alot to ask but my mind sits and spins with the inconsistency of it. I stare at my multiple TOGs in awe and no, I haven't tried flowing through a global or unstored calc because I just don't see how it can. Old thinking sure dies hard. I defined a field (depositamt) in a table to sum one of two fields in related records dependant on the contents of a global field (deposittype). Hello all. I am new to FileMaker Pro, and have a question on which direction to go to use it the way I want. I am independantly employed, and when I am hired for a job, I bring up and print a lot of different types of documents. I also have to create my invoices, and keep track of estimates, and received payments. Does anybody know anyway to open a FileMaker file on the host and automatically make it run a script from an email hyperlink or send them to a certain record in a hosted database (not a web page from FMServer Advanced)? Hi there, I have a database with a table full of projects with a project ID etc. Each project will have been reviewed at a meeting in stage one and reviewed at a second meeting stage 2. Secondly i have a table with the meeting details in - so i will have meetings with dates. What i want to do is introduce a portal on the meetings layout that brings up all the projects discussed at that meeting. I've just sucumbed to the latest FM promotional offer and purchased the "last-chance" upgrade from v 4.1 to v7. I've now got the software and all the licence codes ready to go. Problem is, I don't yet have (and can't really afford for a while) a whole new PC complete with the necessary XP operating system to run it. I am laying out a report page with subsummaries to organize my data by individual room names in a list format. The problem is that it will display the room name on one page and put the related room info on the next page, or place a portion on one page and runoff on the next. Is there any way to format it so that it only places complete info on a page. I would format it using layouts if the number of rooms and info under the rooms were always the same, but there not. I have been learning a lot from these forums, and wondered if there was an answer to one of my earliest issues I ran into. I have a solution designed to track a vehicle's information and the information of any tickets written for that vehicle. We can then keep track of how many tickets each vehicle has, and how many of those are unpaid. I currently track this with calculation fields using the Count() function via relationship. I know that calculations using related fields are a bit slow. Is there something I am missing that would work as well? I've experimented with Ray's Calc, but it doesn't seem appropriate to this situation. I figured someone else …

This is, no doubt, a pretty bone-headed question, but here goes: I've got a dataset with 84 fields...but I can only view the first 66 fields in Table view. They all show up in the 'define fields' dialog box as well as Layout view, but I can't tab past the 66th field, nor can I do a find in one of these later fields (except in Layout view). (Just in case, yes, I've scrolled all the way to the right in the window!) Note that I've imported these data from a comma-separated text file. Post-import, 'define fields' does indicate that there are 84 (actually 85, but that's another story). Help!

Hi, Well, I have this Evaluation table with atleast 15 fields - Event Code,Department, Job Title, etc. I need to calculate number of records from a particular department, number of records from people with a particular Job title etc. So I made a lot of self joins with different fields. Essentially I'm trying to implement a mail merge type situation where an editable text field contains tokens/markers that later get replaced with other field values from the database. This editable field contains text of varying styles (some bold, underline, centered, etc.). I'm simply trying to get a file created in FMPro to display. I'm told that I need the "runtime" or runtime program by the people that gave the file (*.CL5) to us but they can't say what version. I've tried it on a PC that has FM 4 on it but it won't treat it as a native file. I've tried to understand FMPro in the past when we used it for various education databases but it's been quite a while ago. Is the "runtime" program like a simple reader? Something like a free reader program Microsoft gives out so you can view a Power Point presentation? Sorry, but I'm completly clueless on this.

I don't have a 'use compatible graphics' option on the windows version. I am really confused as to why i can't store pdf files as pictures in a container. i could do it before when i stored the pdf files using a button( i know - i was new and didn't know about container) - i also have pictures already stored that display fine and also my boss who uses a mac can insert the pdf files as pictures. I have attached a view of what i see. What is happening - should i be able to store pdf files as thumbnails. I have noticed that there is a very usefull function in FMP v7. It enables you to change the file paths to the other files. While upgrading my database to v7 I noticed that there is a list of different file paths for just one script or relation file. One relative path and one to the root of my HD. Is there a way or a utility around, that enables me to change the filepath of my FMP v5 database? This would really save me a lot of time having to do this in v7. I have noticed that relocating the file does not really do the trick. Even buggy at some point. With filemaker Pro the file is located but when I make it Runtime it can't find the file. thanks...

Hi, I'm just trying to configure Web Server Connector to work with FMU6 on another machine, but when I try to set it up with the FMU6 host, it reports "! Unable to read database names" and leaves it at that. We've been running successfully for some months now without WSC, but are looking to expand our options. Config: 1. I've been working on a database (about 800 records), simple scripts, about 40 fields, and about 10 layouts. When executing a particular script, (switch to layout X, sort, and go to preview mode), the entire application quit. When trying to open it, it asked for the username and password, each time it wouldn't accept ANY of the passwords. (The passwords did work to open the file, and they also worked on a backup from 3 weeks earlier, so it wasn't a "dumb capslock" problem) The error message was that that particular username/password combo can't be used to access the file. Hi, I'm trying to improve a database that we use to record the status of student course applications. Basically I want it to regularly check for course applications which we have received and have not been acted on for 30 or more days and then send a email to the course tutor. I set up a related table which displays a portal on the main page to record the latest status of an application and all I need to do is search for those records whose last tracking record = under consideration. This may have been posted and/or talked about a few different times around here. What I'm basically trying to create is a hierarchical portal. Or in other works, to show child relationships underneath the parents in one portal. I've downloaded the example from FileMaker's website (I beleive it was created by Cleveland Consulting), but I can't make heads or tails of the workings of it, plus it uses plug-ins. Hello, I am developing a system that tracks payments and balances due or owed on a monthly basis. I'm using relationships/calculations that look back to previous months to bring balances due or owed into the most recent month. The problem is, the db slows down during data entry on these pages. If the user does data entry that will change the balance, the db takes some time to refigure the balance. I want the user to be able to fly through data entry and to not have to pause while the db recalculates. Couldn't think of a better title b/c I don't really know the jargon yet. I have to explain with example. In my Movie Database, I want to be able to click on a record within a portal and have that record come up in a separate layout. Is this possible? Is it hard to do? I am trying to duplicate the results of a summarized report (Break Headers), that would be interactive. It's a form that gives you different items to place a quantity next to depending on earlier selections. I need Headers for each Category to make it easier to fill out the form. Hi there, I have a problem with displaying pdf files as picture files. I am using containers to insert pdf files as pictures. My colleague using a mac just rights clicks on the container then selects insert picture and selects the pdf file. A picture of the files first page is then displayed. When he passes the database over to me the file he has inputted does not show and there is a message saying 'file cannot be displayed'. The strange this is we have been doing this for a few months and the previous file pictures show fine - it is only recently this has happened. Hi all, this customer of ours once bought an Adobe font and uses it across his company. Also used it in FMP6. Now he has upgraded to FMP7, but the font is not in the list of fonts he can use. I guess it's not TrueType or whatever FMP7 prefers to use. Is there a way to make a font, acceptable for FMP7, out of one of these older fonts? If so, is that legal? TIA Ano

Hi, In my solution I have two fields labeled "Alc percent" and "Alc Proof". Originally, I had the "Alc Percent" field as a simple calc "Alc Proof / 2". However, I would like to allow the user to enter data into either Field. If "alc Proof" is entered then the "alc percent" field calculates "Alc Proof / 2". If "alc percent" is entered then "Alc Proof" calculates "alc percent * 2". Can I do this with just calcs and not use scripts and globals? I have tried auto enter calc replacing existing data but it only works when I change the "alc proof" value. If I change the "alc percent" value, it reverts back to the "alc proof / 2".
