FileMaker Server v7 - v11

Discussing issues with Server version 7 - 11 ( .fp7)

  1. Started by Dominic Filteau,

Hi all, in regards to this Post, I tried another way of doing it.. I have an Applescript that takes value of a field, then uses the "do shell script" command to generate a txt file on the HD, then another "do shell script" to change line endings from CR to LF, where the output goes to another directory. This works just fine when ran from FMP, but I need to make this Server sided, in order to have the resulted file to be updated on a schedule.. here is what I have so far: file script is:(based on this example copy cell "PROFESSIONNELS INTER::CalendarName" of current record to fileName copy cell "PROFESSIONNELS INTER::tout ensem…

OK, this is really odd. My MBP recently went in for service and I deauthorized by FM9A and installed it and activated it on my home iMac (OSX 10.5.4, FMA 9.0v3). Firewall set to allow "All incoming connections." I maintain several solutions hosted by a 3rd party hoster who has them on a couple different servers. I am unable to access two of those servers at all. As a Favorite host, when I select that server, nothing shows up, when usually all the files do (including my own). Other users (my clients) can see the files, just not me. Customer service at the hosting company has been great, but ultimately unhelpful. The host maintains a handful of ser…

  3. Hi All, We have FMSA7 running on a mac and this server hosts many databases. Suddenly, when we tried to login into the FileMaker Server Admin and when we were prompted to enter the password, the application was not accepting the password. But we feel that the password is correct. All the databases are still being served but we are unable to launch the FileMaker Server Admin application. We went to the unix shell and tried to execute the fmsadmin -v command and we were asked to enter the password. At the command level, the password was accepted and all the server info was displayed. Has anyone encountered a similar problem and how did you resolve this situation. A…

I have read many many posts regarding Admin Console's flakiness when trying to properly administer a Mac server running FMSA9 advanced. The only way I have managed to get it to work properly is by re-installing FMSA on the server every time Admin Console starts to misbehave. Today I had a power failure and my Mac server re-started itself. All FM files being served OK via IWP. But, once again, Admin Console now tells me that the DB server isn't running (when it is!), so I can't use it to do very much. Proper Shutdowns and managed Restarts etc on the server don't help. I haven't re-installed FMSA but once again it looks as 'though I will have to (for the n'th time!). I'…

  9. Started by blackjack60,

I'm in the process of setting up a FileMaker Server v9. (At this point it is a trial, but will be converted to a "real" one in a week or two.) However, I have run into what looks like a bug with the Upload Database Assistant. I try to go through the assistant, but when I select a database to upload (or simply create a subfolder), the "Next" button is always grayed out. (So, I can't get to the next step.) I've been able to work around this problem by manually creating the folders, and copying the databases to the server, but this seems like a pretty basic thing to not work. Any ideas?

Hi all, One of my clients wants to move up from the Mac Mini they're using as a dedicated FMS box. My question is, which is the best Mac machine they can buy to boost their server's speed? Specifically, will FMS benefit from two chips as opposed to just one? We are planning to purchase the Mac Pro tower, with two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon chips. Just want to know if buying the two-chip setup is indeed significantly better than just getting the one chip -- and upping the RAM instead. All ideas, advice, vastly appreciated.

  12. (I couldn't find an answer to my question after perusing the threads in this forum so I apologize if this question has been answered already and I missed it.) Howdy, all: I'm biting the bullet and have purchased FM 9.0x Server and FM Web School's FM Studio, and am now gathering opinions as to which Microsoft Server 2008 flavor should I purchase to use with them: Standard or Web? As an FM Pro developer, I want to be best able to assist my customers when installing and using my solution, so I'm leaning a little bit toward the Standard Edition. However, since the solution will be accessed via the Web in many cases then maybe the Web version will do? *puzzled l…

Hi all, I have four databases that I need to share with 3 users on a local intranet. I do not want to use web publishing as it is messing up my layouts. If I buy a filemaker server licence, do I also need to buy individual licences for each client or are they included in the price? I thought about just hosting the database files on the file server and buying clients but will there then be connection problems? Your advice is appreciated. Kind Regards Rich

  14. I currently have a script that involves finding some records, saving as a pdf file then emailing it. I am running this script via a schedule on FMS9 . The only script line that is not server friendly is 'save as PDF (no dialog)' which is a shame as I have to use a plugin to trigger the script on a client PC (which does work but is a little clunky and temporarily disrupts work on the clients pc while the script is running) I could understand it not working if I was not ticking 'perform without dialog' option. Does anyone know if there is a plugin that would run on the server that can save a pdf file. Thanks

  15. We've created a database that is shared via the Filemaker IWP (I assume thats the web browser interface) -- but it requires a username/password to access it. We'd really like to set it up so anyone can view it without having to enter a password. Where are the options to enter/edit usernames and passwords for filemaker? Also, bizarrely, the database requires a username & password to open it remotley ... none of our other databases do! Any clues or links to the documentation about user access controls with sharing?

We had a demo recently by a rep from WorldSync of their product SyncDek. I think it is a pretty cool tool that we may have more uses for than we thought. What I am curious about is if there are any other tools out there that have the same functionality? As of right now, we would only be syncing two(or more) filemaker databases. I did a search, and WorldSync is the only one that comes up. Not that there is anything against WorldSync, but if we are going to spend that kind of money, we would like to be as well informed as we possibly can about all the options. Thanks in Advance. ~Mark

I am trying to get a filemaker script step to work correctly as part of a filemaker schedule. The script step is set web viewer [go to URL...] The url being used 'activate' a RSS service outside of filemaker. This script step is web-compatible and thus is able, in theory, to be run as part of a server schedule activated script. The script works as a standalone script within a filemaker client. Because the schedule runs as a session on the server I tested the URL by pasting it into a browser on the server. This worked. So there is no blocking of the URL on the server either. Is this script step really compatible with filemaker server schedules? Any help…

If I specify the same as the database containing the script I get the following error: "filename.fp7" could not be created on this disk. 27. Just upgraded a server (G5, 4G Ram) to Leopard. Was running FM Server 7.0 in OSX 10.4 just fine (only about 10 files). After installing Leopard and when trying to open FM server to administer the files, got the message "Connection Failure" - Could not connect to FileMaker Server (localhost)" (127.0.0.1). Only option is "OK" and then it closes FM Server. Upgraded FM Server to 8.0.2 and got the same error. Still can't host the files in FM Server as a result. Is Leopard incompatible with versions prior to Server 9, or is there some network setting that may have been reset during Leopard install? Help, please!

In FMP9 is there a way for an administrator to create accounts with passwords and have these pushed to all computers on an FMP Server network? And can we script this so we can provide the administrator with our own interface and record the accounts and passwords in a table located on the server? Yes, I recognize there is a potential security hazard in doing so. However the downside is minimal and reasonable if access to the server room is sufficiently limited (as it should be in any case). The upside is considerable; we can script our own more powerful privilege system than FMP provides natively. With such a system we can provide administrators the option to make ch…

I have both plugged into my switch and both are configured manually (i.e. two static IP addresses). As I understand it, the switch handles the network load balancing so there is no probably no way to configure Mac OS X to pretend that I'm on a single NIC with a single IP address. SO, my question is, which IP address should I use for my opener file's data reference? I'm guessing it's just the first one, but I've got two to choose from. I then went back to the original version of Apache and even though Apache starts, I can no longer serve on my localhost. I can't even get to localhost/fmi/config. 38. With the implementation of server side scripting, I decided to fully normalize my tables and run nightly scripts to update local "index" columns. Users have the choice of a faster search against last night's index vs. a (frequently painfully) slower search against live data. I've run into a problem when the data is located in an external source. When the script is run by FMS the result for data from an external source is a blank field, but when I run the script via either IWP or the PHP API it will grab and set the appropriate data as long as the external source is on the same Filemaker server (even if the external source is an ODBC link to a MySQL table). The server box shows the correct time. But the Admin Console shows one hour early. My question is ... where does Admin Console get its time? The system date/time has not been changed; nothing else has happened on this box - it was opened, files were served and the time is wrong. Anyone have this happen? Of course I can unserve the files and re-serve and it might fix itself. But even if it does, that wouldn't answer the question of how the time could have been off and that is why I want to know where it grabs the time from. I would have assumed it would use its own OS date/time, right?

Who is responsible for setting the date/timestamp on files that are served ... FMS or the operating system? The reason I ask is that, when files are unserved (and there has been data changed) the date/timestamps should update with the time the files are closed, right? Sometimes they don't update - they can be an hour to four hours earlier even though, when reviewing the data, the modification timestamps verify that the data was actually changed. So when the Admin Console locks up (quits responding) and we have to close services (won't even respond to command line prompts), many times the file timestamps are hours off! I have a very curious tale to tell. At 19:11 on 15th July, FMS 9 launched a server-side script that appeared to execute successfully. However, no further scripts were launched after that time (and they should be every 5 minutes). The solution was used throughout the day on 16th July. The users of the solution reported that it functioned fine. (The server-side scripts perform non-vital tasks so their failure went unnoticed). At 17:00 on the 16th July, it was noticed that fmserverd was using 99% of the CPU constantly - a symptom that we have noticed before, of a server-side script being stuck in a loop. All clients disconnected from the solution, and we …

I have a client (far away), who wants to limit WAN access to the hosted files, to only a couple of top-level privilege sets. He is not using Active Directory, though he is on Windows, using Server 9 (I believe). I am not much experienced with this kind of Server management. He especially wants to block LAN users from going home and accessing the files from home. I don't particularly see this as a big problem myself, as the users have fairly limited access; no Export, Editing only menu set, etc.. Anyway, if Active Directory is the only viable option, then perhaps we should use it; but I'd rather not, because I cannot go there to set up or fix it, and he may not …

Just ran into a nasty situation. Without knowing it, a db file on our FMserver 9 corrupted, 10 days ago. Then yesterday the server needed to be restarted, and that is when we notice the db would not open. We would like to add a check for this in the future and one way I was thinking was to schedule the server to close and open all files each night. That was if the file doesn't open we can catch it sooner. I can see in the Admin console there is an option to run a system-level script. - Has anyone does this on a Mac server? - Preferred script would be close and open files.

  61. Okay, pulling my hair out here... I have setup the AutoUpdate feature of FMS 9. I followed a tutorial by Geoff Coffee which carefully explained how configure the server and plugins for deployment. I created the scripts necessary and I keep getting a "-5" error which means that the file cannot be downloaded into the local extensions folder. Oh yeah, this is an all Windows environment. The FM server is on a Windows 2003 box. I have tested from multiple clients with the same result. I have searched FMI's KB resource and poured through the server documentation, but am coming up dry. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know this because of the overlap of resulting records which were created (I can show everyone if they wish to see the proof of such an overlap). My question is ... shouldn't FM Server finish one script before starting another? Each of the two scripts in question fire their own sub-scripts. But it is my understanding that one script (including all of its sub-scripts) should finish before the next script can even start. But that is not what is happening. And the two scripts firing together is causing problems f…
