I have recently converted a FM5 data application to FM7 hosted on an OsX machine. The conversion worked very smoothly but I am finding little things that do not work right. This one is being a real problem. The customer file layout has a portal to an order file; the order file is related by a customer number. The order file is also related to a line item file by the order number. A new order is created from the customer layout by a button that creates a new order record through the portal on the layout then opens that orders file and allows the addition of line items through a portal in the order file layout. Hi all-- I have a job search database where I want to track three different categories of communications, depending on whether the focus is on (a) a specific job opening, ( contact with a specific individual, or © contact with a recruiting firm. These need to stay separate even though there might be some overlap (for example, an e-mail about a job might or might not be to a specific individual). My DB has 4 tables that matter here: Jobs, People, Recruiters, and Contact Log. This last one tracks each communication. Hi all! I just found the forums and will preface this by saying I _just barely_ can manage to work with FMP7.0 vs2 at work. 8-) We've just upgraded, and I need to be able to have the cell borders appear when I preview & print. Since it doesn't appear in the soft preview, I figured this was a layout problem rather than a printing one. I've tried going into layout view (normally I use form), and tinkering with the field borders, but they still don't appear in Preview or Print. Hello, Suppose I have a portal containing 40 names, in ascending order, and it is configured to show 10. I have a script that adds a new record and then highlights this newly added record. However, if I add someone whose last name is "Smith", that record will most likely appear out of view. Is there any way I can scroll so that the newly added record appears? I was thinking of using the Go to Portal Row step with a calculation, but I don't know a way of determining in which row "Smith" appears. Regards, Sean Mills

I've attached a sample of a standard portal. Our users edit the text from within the portals, and as they select each row, they 'see' less text each time. The fourth row of this portal only shows one line of text, rather than all three lines as with the first row in the portal. Is there any way around this ? Thanks in advance . . . portal.zip

Hi I'm moving some old simple multi-file FM 5 databases over to FM 7. It's for tracking Assignment Scores and should be easy but I'm having some trouble. Currently I have these tables Student * StudentID * Name Assignment * StudentID * AssignNo (1-4) * Mark plus some other stuff I've removed to keep it simple. It used to be one student file and 4 assignment files that were linked together. I've created and linked the tables above by the StudentID. Basically I want to do two things. 1. OK, maybe there is another way to do this but I wanted to keep it simple so maybe there is a good suggestion out there. I have a portal, within which I may have 1 record, and may have as many as 150 records in it. I want to format a page to print the records in the portal but I cannot seem to find a way to do this so it uses only as many pages as necessary. If I put in 'show 75 records', the portal takes up more than one 8.5x11 page on my page layout, but I assumed that if I clicked the box in the the sliding/printing feature, it would ignore the format. It seems it's my week for show-and-tell. I decided to put the post here in portals in case anyone else ran into the situation. Portal data is date/time fields. Photo 1: As you see it displays incorrectly although the data is correct and it is a date field. Photo 2: Clicking into field fixes it. Photo 3: And it STAYS fixed until I minimize the FM application window. Upon opening FM again, the fields have revered back to wonky. Well, I have a way of finding weird things. I've repeated tests and it does this on all my test files as well. Please notice the little black phone in photo 1. That is layout mode and the phone should be under the status area (no kidding). When I switch to Browse, photo 2 is the result. And the bugger moves around (photo3)! How I broke it: In layout mode, scroll slightly to right then enter Browse. It only does it on this one little graphic so it's not a bug. As usual, it's just me. Help! I have 30 products series. Each product series has five to eight colors that can be selected. For example, series 1 has ten colors - black, blue, brown; dark green, red; green, yellow , teal, dark blue and yellow. Series 2 has eight colors - different shades of black, red, dark green; white, dark brown, blue and two additional shades of black and brown. The two color series randomly rotate between each of the 30 product series. I have an FM Pro6 database that has a long field stretched over several pages to accommodate six or so pages of text. It prints a header at the top of each page. The problem is it prints the field text directly on top of the header. It looks like a double exposure or a piece of paper that had something printed on it and was run through the printer again and something different printed on top of it. It didn't do this before and does not do it on all printers. I can also duplicate it by using Adobe distiller to print to a pdf. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

I am refactoring a large multifile database into a group of very simple building block elements. I almost have all the layout overhead removed and need just one more piece to make it really work. Instead of fixed layout elements I use a color theme library. On the layout I wish to use tranparent modifiers to make the interface move in 3D as a context indicator to the user about what needs to be noticed in particular data states ( an interface much like those used in mission simulations ). I have a VL called "Contractors" and it is shown by relation. The issue I have is that I use a field called "xStatus" that is set to 0 on creation. If a user wants to delete a record I set "xStatus" to 1 and omit that record from then on. How do I stop those "deleted" records appearing in my VL Thanks for any help!!

Hello, I must be overlooking something, but I'm about to distribute a solution that involves custom menus. If a user is currently using my solution, and then wishes to switch to another solution running on his/her computer, how can he/she do that? I just realized that I can add a [Window] custom menu, but I can't customize its contents. I'm hesitant to enable the Show Window menu item because I really don't want users aware of hidden files in my solution (the hidden files just have benign layouts, so they really can't mess with them, but I'd rather they didn't even know about them). I've written a database in FM8/Mac, and am testing it on Windows. Fonts look terrible. I've used Tahoma (one of the MS core fonts for web) throughout, and hadn't anticipated any difficulty. But the fonts are much too large when I open the database in Windows, and it makes my layout look very poor. In a search, I found out that other people had encountered this. But I didn't find any solutions. What are people doing to work around the problem? Should I make all the fonts smaller on the Mac (ie. basically compromise the Mac layout) so it displays correctly on Windows?

Real fundamental question here; if I want to make graphic changes to a layout, I do a save as, which adds the "copy" to the layout name, then work on the copy. Once I have made the changes to my liking, do i then change the name back to the orginal and have it replace it? Or am I better off working on the original and if i screw up, use the copy. Make sense?

Hi- We have a custom phone log- very basic- and all I need to do is create a button that inserts a new record that acts as a date separator so you can see phone calls from different dates easily. I tried a button using import and also new record but can't seem to get it to work- can I do it all from 1 file or will I need a second file to act as the inserted record? Hi, I have very nice FM 6 pro datatbase with invoicing feature that works just fine. There is one thing that I would like to improve, it's in the report form of the invoice. When I add an item,that has a serial number (Spare Parts) it occupies one line naturally. Further down on the same invoice, it happens that this item reappears because of an other sale and it occupies a new line. Now , what I would like is to have a way of getting the repetitive items to add and so they show up on one line and the quantity shows the added quantity of the item. I am creating a scheduling solution and would like a drop down menu displaying todays date and the next 13 days ie. a fortnight - this should automatically change every day. I've tried using a calculation for the value list eg. "today + 1 & ¶ & today + 2 etc..." this works but does not update correctly (the oldest date remains in the list) and the list displays the dates in format eg. "14/2/06" but displays "Tue, 14 Feb 2006" when I click off it. I tried various formatting but can't seem to sort it out - I'm sure there is a more elegant solution. Help would be appreciated. Cheers.

Okay, I don't know how well I will describe what I want to do, but hopefully someone full of knowledge will help me. I want to create seperate tables that categories distinct bits of information. For example, it is a bunch of products. I want everything in product A to be in its own table, everything from product B to be in its own table, etc. I want to be able to have a title distinguishing them. I have a layout that has a save button (I have auto save diabled) I'm trying to dummy proof this DB as much as I can. My "Save button" runs a small script when saving for validation purposes. BUT...When a user clicks outside of a field or button, a window pops up asking whether to save the record or not. If you click save it bypasses my script and all validation. I’m new to Filemaker. I use FilemakerPro 8 on an iMacG5 OSX. I have been able to successfully relate 3 tables (Customers, Line Items, and Invoice). I am stuck on how to get the Line Items into the Invoice layout. I have tried using a portal, but the number of rows in the portal that I set up may not correspond with the number of rows of line items that are to be viewed in the portal each time an new invoice is created. I am working for a PBS station and currently I am working on putting our pledge activities in a database. For our TV pledges, I created a program table, a scheduling table and a program_premium table (a table between premium item and program). I join program table to program_premium table, then join program to scheduling table. The data entry works great. All you need to do is add a program record and add in the pledge breaks in a scheduling portal, then select the premium offer in the program_premium portal. I'd like to put two buttons at the bottom of a data-entry layout to: >>> Set Pen Color Black <<< . . . . . >>> Set Pen Color Red <<< After clicking on one of them, all text that the user types from that point is stored/displayed in that color, regardless of the particular field being typed into. I have a value list that references a field that displays all the floors in a building.... Most of the floor fields are numeric, but there are values in there that are actually text, (for example - roof,Basement, Bulkhead) If i make the floor field a text field then the floors arent listed in numerical order (for example - floors 11,12,13,etc come before floor 2), but if i put it as a number field then roof, basement, bulkhead, show up as "?". Is there anyway to do a custom sort order, or any way around this??? I would hate for my value list to not be in order.

Folks, I am using Brian Dunnings Barcode Basics Code 128 barcoding sytem for FMP 8. I have Dymo labels that are 1 inch wide for my barcode and I've already done may label layout so that it prints correctly. I can't seem to resize a barcode to fit in the label space. Resizing the font or changing the style doesn't change the bar spacing. If I change the bounding box size the barcode gets cut off. Perhaps this isn't something that shouldn't be done with barcodes. Will it still be scannable? I Essentially typed in LIB20000 to convert to a barcode to get the resulting size of the barcode. I need advice.

Is there a a way out of this? I had just created the last button (in footer of a list layout), when I went to move it, I discovered clicking on it showed 'item active' on another object and, from then on, nothing else would activate and the activated item would not deactivate. The same object activates whatever I click on. When I deleted the activated object and re-clicked on any item, another object became the only one that would activate. I have tried quit/restart, save as reducing size, export/clone/import, recover db and duplicate layout. Hi To All, Is it possible to extend a button on a portal row based on a calculation in the realted table? (Maybe through repeating field.) I have a portal on a tabbed page. The layout background is black, my tab background is grey, the fields + labels are a black font. When I try to add a record to the portal it highlights the row in black so I can't see what I am typing. Now I could just change the type to another colour but I would rather not. Hi. I am not sure that this is beeing posted on the right place in this forum but I hop someone can give me a hint or solution. I woder if it's possible to copy parts of a template to a blank file. Like a button or a calender etc with the scripts and value lists incleded and intact. I have tried to use a template with a very nice calendar that I wanted to include in another solution and it say's in the info to the template that it should be possible but I haven't figure out how. I have made a great looking database -- I think so anyway. My list view has 3 parts the Header, Body, and Footer. Is there a way to remove or hide the line that separates the parts. These lines are really annoying me. And yes, for this particular layout, I prefer to use a list view rather than a portal. Any help would be greatly appreciated. sifter.

I've just started my design of a custom menu set for my runtime application. There are a couple of important but seldom-used layouts that I'd like to have listed across the top as menu items to provide "one-click" direct access for the user (rather than having buried down in the application button sets). For example, have "Set Defaults" on the menu bar. When the user clicks on it, FMP executes a Go to Layout ["Set Defaults"] without any further action by the user. With so may options in FMP's Edit Custom Menu functions, I haven't found a way to set this up. Any suggestions? Is this possible to do?

Using FM8 Advanced on Win: I have a filtered value list built from records in a Valuelist File. The list is attached to a field called 'City'. If the user enters a value that is not already on the list, when I left the layout via a button, I would run a validation routine that checked the value, and added the record automatically to the filtered list. I'm trying to implement tab-based user screens to avoid having multiple windows open for users to worry with. But I'm having a problem navigating from a portal row (via GTTR) to another tab(screen). The data “environment” isn't being passed. Everything works when I open the screen in a separate window, but not if I try the same funtions on a separate tab. Hi, Not sure if this is the correct forum but I think my problem is to do with portals. What I want to set up is a dynamic customer entry field on a jobs worksheet. It is reasonably important that this sheet is as simple as possible as mouse to keyboard movements should be limited, and end users have low end keyboard skills - i.e. not computer operators) On this jobsheet what I would like staff to be able to do is start typing the name of the customer and the field will auto fill based on typing. Hi, I'm trying to think how to create a calendar / scheduler like that provided in Outlook. I want to show 1 day at a time, and then have 20 or so 30 minute appointments displayed (for a Doctor Surgery). I thought of creating a 'Date' table and then a portal (Appointments table) with appointment times, but, I really want blank appointments to be listed (so we know what's free), and the only way I can think to do that would be to create millions of mostly blank records in the Appointment table before releasing the software. I'm trying to fashion what I thought would be a simple construct: I need to provide the user with a popup showing up to five numbers for a particular "region" and have them select a "current value" for the region. The five values are held in a repeating field within each region's database record. The values are editable by a supervisor and might change day-to-day for any region. Well where do I put this question!? I've recently moved from 7 to 8.0v2. I use underlines at the beginning of (some) field names. But the underlines won't display. I've noticed the same thing in script field-selection popups. In some of my views, several underlined fields in a row won't display the underline. But it's always missing on the first field. I don't recall (and can't find after searching) any discussion on this. Is this a bug or a feature? Windows and/or Mac? Screen res? 8.0v2 and not 8.0v1? XP and/or ... etc ... I'm trying to figure out how I can populate a list of all client names when "status" field reads "Confirmed by Phone" or "Confirmed by e-mail". I have over 2000 records. Is there a way to create a numbering system when a layout is sorted by sub-summary? I would like to have 1-whatever appear in my layout, but need the # to restart with each newly-found item (by which the layout is sorted). Has anyone developed a simple grid layout for displaying thumbnail images from object records? Is there a way to "freely rotate" text fields? I have a layout that follows an arced path (seating assignments) and want to rotate name fields to follow the varying degrees of the arc. I can only get the fields to rotate by 1/4 turns. Does anyone know a solution? Thanks, George

Hi all, I have several tabs (1 grouping) on a layout. All contain portals. I have a button on each tab body (outside the portal) that triggers a script that goes to the layout based on the related TO. Once there it performs some steps and when it's finished performing those steps the script says Go To Layout[original layout]. This is where my question comes in... Why does the Go To Layout [ ] step show a tab other than the one I was viewing sometimes but not all the time? I haven't noticed a logical pattern. What am I missing? Thanks in advance!

Is anyone aware whether it is possible to create a layout with modal behavior? So far all I have seen in versions 1-8 are layouts that can be ignored by users, no modal behavior at all thus. Any hints welcome, and yes you can make a field mandatory but true modal behavior prevents you to even quit the application before answering/adding the needed information TIA Rob

Hi all, I have three tables, one with client details in, one with stock details and a third which I am creating to store 'want lists' of clients. eg Client A might want a t-shirt that is red and size XXL, so I would add a record in the third table, which has teh colour and size fields filled in. Then when I am browsing the stock table if I browse to a t-shirt that is red and XXL, the portal would show the Clients name, showing they are interested in it. Anyone have any ideas how I can go about it?

Hello, I am attempting the following: select a whole layout, copy, go to a new layout (the same file, the same table), paste the layout. While the layout is still "intact" based on positioning and formatting, all the fields are blank! It's like the look of the layout came, but the fields became undefined. Help?

Hi everyone! I'm having a problem with some portals and I wonder if someone could give some advice... I have a contacts table and a tasks table. Firstly, I want to be able to filter portal 'a' to show tasks by status - which I have done with a global field with the task status value list. - not started - in progress - waiting on response - complete But I would also like to be able to filter portal 'a' to show all tasks that are not 'complete' as well as by the other status categories. I am not sure this can be done. I have tried setting up several different scenarios and relationships with no luck. I would like to have a single field portal, showing contact name, running alongside my contact name layout so that I can click on the name in the portal and the correct record shows on the page as well. I know I have seen examples of this or something similar but I have not been able to find it. I saw a training video by MAtt Petrowsky that I thought would do it but it was a completely different application. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Al

Hello everyone I am offering my user a list of existing records to use as templates. I am allowing them to filter the list down by offering the list through a self join portal. Is there any way to script it so that they can duplicate their selected portal row by simply clicking on it without the extra 'blank' record that switching on 'allow creation of records via this relationship' creates on the last row of the portal Thanks in advance Phil

I am trying to add a checkbox to a layout. I have defined a value list and formatted the field as checkbox set and included the value list. When I enter the browse mode the field is there but not as a checkbox. To make sure I did it properly I created a new file and duplicated the procedure above and it worked fine. It will not work in my file. Any sugesstions?

Hello to All, I'm working on a file for my Wife's Osteopathic Practice. It is intentionally very simple and i am trying to contain it to as few layouts as is possible to make it as easy as possible to use. I have the following tables, patient, bookings, invoice and product. In the patient window i have a portal to bookings and in the invoice table i have a portal also to bookings but with different fields showing. In a layout I have a portal with a field model and then dimesion fields A,B,C,D. pending on the model entered then various fields must be filled in as mandatory. Example: if Model 'E90' then only field A must be filled. If model 'TR' then fields A,B,C must be filled. If Model 'TC' Then fields A & C must be filled. Can the this be done so if these fields are not filled then a message appears?

In planning my first FMP application, I’ve come upon a need to be able to sequence through records of a related table from a tab on the application’s main layout. Attached is an example of what I’m trying to accomplish. I’ve tried several things but just haven’t found the right combination. I have added fields to use on a layout in list view. I have played around with the positioning and now have a few fields which are slightly taller than others. It is not easy to adjust the heights of all the fields accurately. When I used Microsoft Access, there was a tool to resize the field if you changed the font size etc. I can't find out how to do this in FileMaker. Any ideas?

As I continue to work my way through the FMP 8 feature set (I've had good success using portals on tabbed layouts), I find myself stalled on a couple of fairly fundamental issues: What FMP features exist to display a sequence of fields from successive records in individual fields on a layout WITHOUT using a portal? What is a "recommended" way to delete a specific group of records once they have been selected and displayed in a portal? Currently I have two tables, Clients and Jobs. Clients is related to jobs through ClientID. Both tables have an auto enter serial field, ClientID and JobID. ClientID uses a value list, Clients and is set as a pop down list. Rather than having to scroll through 300 + clients to choose one on entry of new jobs, I want to be able to manually enter a client and have it lookup that client in the value list for the ClientID number. Currently when I enter a new job a new ClientID serial is assigned rather than FM using the previous entry of that client. Any ideas?

Not sure if this is the correct board, but... (FMP7) I'm creating a small database consisting of two files. Students and DormRooms. The DormRooms is a finite list of available dorm rooms for bed assignments. The Students file contains a field for "dorm_assignment". In the students file, I have a field used to assign a room (value list from DormRooms). How do I make that value list dynamic, and allow only the unassigned rooms to display? For those that could be interested, I had fun in the past weekend while improving my tiny demo that proposes a scripted usage of the tabs under FM8 v1. I took a different approach to solve the problem where the tab headers are totally disabled and the whole navigation is done by custom buttons and custom scripts. This solution is very strong and can be prettier than the built-in FileMaker tabs. I have a simple database with three fields: title, description, and date. I prefer browsing in the Table View. The title is short and only takes one line. The description can be a line or a paragraph or two. I would like to have the row height expand or contract according to how much info is there. That doesn't seem possible. It's either one line or choose a static, custom length. But in choosing the custom length to accommodate the longest description, there's a whole lot of wasted space between rows--printing becomes overwhelming. Any suggestions how to have the rows dynamically expand or contract?

I am trying to use a set of three selection portals to pick the Items to display in an item purchase history. The portals are Groups(of Items), Items, VendorItems (Items sold by a vendor). The Main display portal should display VendorItem purchase history. How it works now is you click on a GROUP name(in FIRST portal), the list of ITEMS in that group displays in the SECOND portal, you click on a item in the second portal and it displays the list of VENDORS that sell that item in the THIRD portal. I have a client running FMP8v2 on two Mac OSX 10.3.9 computers over a network. The issue is that when I am on a layout and create a new record (both scripted and using drop-down method), my layout switches. I cannot figure out why. My script (I built to test) forces the layout I want to stay on, but does not seem to do anything. I am logged in as Admin with Full Access so there should be no permission issues. Thoughts? not sure if this is the correct category for this issue. i just converted a database from fp5 format to fp7. it a simple database, but is exhibiting a behavior that is alarming to users. in list layout, where each data field is displayed in a horizontal row, one field has a description, and these descriptions are multiple lines. of course, one only sees the one line, but when clicked the field expands to show the entire contents. however, if one does this on the last visible item in the list (or one with much written in the description so it's box extends beyond the viewable are in the filemaker window) and adds a return or tries to use the arrow keys to mo…

I have multiple tables and it would make life easier to be able to use basically one window - I thought tab control would be the answer to my prayers. Am I right that new records cannot be added to any table but the "main" table whesn using tab control unless portals are used? My question is can you assigned a particular tab to a certain table? Or does is take some heavy duty scripting? I am not new to FM, but my scripting skills are on the level of intermediate and calculation skills are still novice. Your thoughts are welcome. Jessica

FM 7 Our solution has 100+ layouts with the same interface for navigation (buttons that look like folder tabs). The graphics for the button (blue if active / gray if not) and the labels (Home, Contacts, Projects, etc) are relationship based - so I can change them whenever needed and have them change on all 100+ layouts. On some layouts with several portals, the button and it's label fill in slow. The whole navigation interface shows quickly, but the buttons in questions (when you click it and go to that layout) fills very slow - showing up the same time the portals fill. I have a layout with 6 tabs created with the layout mode 'Tab Control Setup'. I made sure not to select a default tab, but each script step that changes layouts/tables in the background, returns to the tab showing in layout mode. I figured out that a nested 'Go to Field' with a hidden field on each tab will get me to the tab of my choice. My question is... how do I figure out which tab the user is on to begin with? I want to be able to return them to the same tab, after the background scripts have run.

In particular, I’m trying to learn how to cause a portal to display a different set of results after it has displayed its initial set of results. I'm looking for other developer's to post their thoughts on the use of a 'back' button. I've read other developers mention they don't let users search - currently I have only one separate window dedicated for searching company and client records.
