I have a database that does an invoice. The list of items in the invoice is a portal to a listitems DB which is in turn related it a item DB (for item discription, amount in stock,prices etc). So it looks like this |Items| ---> |listitems| --P-- |Invoice| I want to be able to subtracht the quantity from the invoice from the item database. Right now i have it loop thought the portal with go to row ( first) etc. and with every item it runs a script in the itemlist DB to take the quantity off in the items DB. The problem i found is that when i run a script it resets the go to row and it takes all the quantitys off the first item. I just tried doing a manual count wit…

I'm planning a new relational database where I need many different users (salespeople) accessing a database of customers. I also need each sales database to access an Order database which can be used for reports later. Simply Database "a" =Customers, Database "b" = salespeople data ralting to "a", and Database "c"= orders relating to both "a" & "b". Does this sound correct? What's the best way to start?

I'm trying to make a layout where a found set of images will come up the way it can in Preview mode - i.e., as a grid several images wide (they're only 72x72), listed horizontally, like so: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 ...etc. Is there any way to copy the way Preview mode works? Using Preview is no good for me, as I can't put buttons in, and the whole point of the layout is to let the client see a large found set and select a record based on the image. Thanks, STanley

I would just like confirmation from anyone that this cannot be done (or better, prove me wrong!). I would like to create a tabbed interface, but with "tabs" not only placed horizontally, in the header, but also vertically, to the left side of the records. Now, as long as you are in "Form View" this works OK. But when switching to "List View", the all elements (of course) repeat themselves. I wish there was not only a header layout part, but also a "left/right margin" layout part... Is there any graphic trick to make this work in a list view? Have a file with workshops and portal with students who follows a specific workshop. In the portal there is a button. When i click on it it goes to the related record in the related file. It shows the latest lay-out when i work on in the related file. How can i force it (in a script )when i click on the portal button that the related record opens in a specific lay-out in the related file.

Hi, I am struggling with a field calculation. I have a field "date of next review" and I want to make it a calculation field, so when ever a person edits a record and the auto input command inputs the " date of modification", It automatically calculates the "Date of next review". Hello everyone! I have two related databases to hold training records (when people took a class, what it was, etc.). The first file is the name repository which stores information about the student. The second file holds records of classes taken with a unique identifier (the relationship) between student and class. So, each record has the student id, class number, description, date taken, etc. What I'd like to do (using the student ID relationship) is create a repeating field in the name repository which contains all the class numbers taken by that student (data from multiple records in the related file into a repeating field on the master). Am still trying to find my ways out in filemaker and i would appreciate any help. Im an absolute newbie with filemaker and am using this program to contruct a mediacal database to help my Phd project. I'd like to have a Running Total in a Portal. Each record in the portal has user-entered values, and the Balance caluculates OK. But I need a running balance in the portal, like a bank book. Hi everyone, I have a portal with following relationship "Name::Customername", when a name is typed in the Name-field, the portal shows all the names that are identical to the name that is typed in the name-field. Is it possible that if i type a piece of a name in the field, the portal shows every name that consists that piece? I have 1200 People in DB. Each are associated with a Group and Sub Group. I have a self-join relationship which sorts alphabetically by last name the people that belong to the same sub group. I need a calc field that numbers the people based on their sorted position in the subgroup. I have a portal which I need to filter via a specific relation. However the relation needs to be by user name and Date. I have a field called "Username" and antoher called "DateCreated" From a series of popup lists I need them to be able to select the user name and then a date. The blank line is there so that you can add a related record simply by typing new record information there. If you don't want to do that, Edit your relationship, and un-check the "allow creation of related records" checkbox. Then the blank line will disappear

I have just inherited a soccer league registration database in FMP v4, which is new to me. Past practice has been to use the previous season's records to track the returning players for the current season. Once registration closed, all records marked ACTIVE are kept, and INACTIVE are deleted. Problem is, if one of these INACTIVE kids comes back next year the record for that player will have to be recreated. I've been trying to have a kid's record copied to another file (Active_Player) from the original file (All_Player) when the player registers for the current season. Being new to FMP, I'm not sure if I should be learning about scripts or portals or something else. …

I have a value list, each item in this value list has its "weight" value, which is defined in another field. For example, The items in value list is A,B,C,D. "A" has its weight value, say "1", which is stored in another number field named "Weight". Maybe in future there should have some calculations on field "Weight". Does anyone out there use a pen tablet to insert signatures into databases? I want to go paperless, and the only way to protect ourselves legally is to have a signature (electronic or otherwise)that verifies everything we have on paper. I have looked at some point-of-sale hardware, but want to make sure that I can actually tie it into FMP before buying it.

Long time no speak, Hope everyone's New Year was great. I would like to know if there are any known database issues/problems with the following: My user can view, alter and create records in Child file portal from within the Parent file. When the new record is created in Parent, the PK auto-number is given to the Parent record. But to make a relationship, the user needs to mannually type this number into the portal Child record. I wrote a script (based on another relationship to avoid cercular reference) to copy this auto-number and paste it into the related FK field in the portal, so when the user clicks the button the relationship is created automatically. ok. I know this works because it works fine in my other database but for some reason in this database i'm working on, i can't get the delete portal row script to work. I have a button at the end of my portal row(s) that has the script Delete Portal Row (that's the only step in that script). In the portal set up i checked the "Allow Deletion of portal records" box and also in the Relationship i checked the "when deleting record..delete related records". But, for some reason when i use this script, it deletes ALL the portal records (in that one portal, that is) AND THE WHOLE "parent" record that contains the portal. This Weeks Books to Print .....Book Names ..........Sets (group of pages that is manageable in quark, about 8) ...............Page Number So every week we have different books that print, and throughout the year books will print 6-12 times. I stumbled upon a nice "smart tabs" template by Onegasoft. By using it you can easily create "smart" tabbed interfaces, without having to go through the work of copying and rearranging tabs all the time, the tabs "know" what and when to display based on the name of the layout. Now I'm thinking of using this as part of a template I'm developing for a rather large solution (>25 files). Have anyone tested using this in a larger scale and is there any downsides to using it? I have been trying for a long time to create a new portal. I have file A and File B. This is a conference in which a person can register for 20 different classes from a choice of let's say 80. I want to be able to enter the class no. in the portal and have the class name flood in from my Classes Database. I am having no success - even went to an extensive class on this. I have looked through filemaker help to no avail. I have a serious deadline now and if anyone can respont to my email at [email protected] and keep in mind that I am self learning so not that familiar with different languages, calculations or anything else complicated. I have a Value list attached to a field, called Action List. I was wondering if it was possible to make the field so that only ONE checkbox could be checked at a time. Right now, you can put a check next to any of the value list entities, and I want the user to be able to only check one box at a time. i am using an fmpro 5.5 database for our company's timesheets.. i have a value list for start time and end time with time in increments of 15 minutes and i have the next field calculating the start time from the end time to reveal total hours... i have the start time and end times list in military format and when entered the field changes to 12 hour regular format.. however is there a way for the value list to just show 11, 12, 1 and not 11, 12 13 AND still calculate the end time from the start time correctly? thanks

I have two data tables that are each storing relation information into a third table. The two data tables have ID and also an additional field with information of the type of data the table is storing. Well, via a portal, the user gets to store some other data and what I want to do, is store in the relation table, the ID, and this other table identification field along with the other information that the relation table is designed to store. OK, I'm totally new to Filemaker from a layout perspective (just created basic layouts...no value lists). I've followed the various instructions for value lists, but I'm still having problems figuring out how to do the following: I have a database for creating a delivery memo. A basic field at the top of the memo is a "Vendor" field. I have a jobs database with a portal of a line items database. Each line will have a code ID, description, price and quantity field, that's not problem. What I would also like to have is a bill of materials for each line item that I can put toegther when creating each line item. It seems like this may be able to be done by using a portal of materials inside the line items portal, but it doesn't seem to work. Is this the right approach? I have a couple of layouts which really work best at a specific set of dimensions (Window size) I have a specific layout I want users to use for searching and layouts for form views and browse style listings. I would like to be able to change between the browse listing (full screen @ 800x640) and the search layout (v.compact) and vice versa. This will be scripted. 2 db's, Contacts.fp5 and Interests.fp5 - related 1-M by Contact ID. I want find all contacts that have both sailing AND skiing as there interests. I sugguest that you put a layout on each file, that says "this is a support database no user interface is supported." or something to that effect. Then when you navigate between files the last thing you do is to swithc to this layout turn of the status bar and lock it. This way if a user opens a window they have no way to access anyting.

I have made a db with 2 fields that uses valuelists. The first field is the main field and takes its values from a valuelist. I wonder if it possible to, depending what value that was choosen in the first field, get a specific valuelist in the second field. For exampel, if I choose the first entry in the "main" valuelist the valuelist that pop up in the second field is valuelist A. If I choose the second entry in the "main" valuelist the valuelist that pop up in the second field is valuelist B, etc. /Mattias

I am a relatively novice user, have never posted a question but have a question whcih I could not find an answer to using the search I have a portal that matches last names from a source database when I type in a last name in new database. Hello, I have one layout with list view, and all the records shown depends on one dropdown list (Go to related record). The var from dropdown list is one global field, and I created one relationship between this global field and other field in the same file. I have a solution with a "grid" made up of 6 portals (one each for grades K through 5) Each row holds the score for a particular test. This works great. (The grid is in a Reports file; the portals show data from a Tests file.) The next request from my end user...she wants to have it calculate the difference between scores of the same test from year to year. I have a question regarding adding a new portal record. There are 2 possible solutions, neither of which I can figure out. I have a portal in a customer database that is showing records from a contacts database. I want to be able to create new contacts from the customer database. So far this is the easy part. I have a large portal showing data from specific dates. The portal is only 2 large areas with a scrollbar. Instead of making the user scroll through the portal to find a specific date I wanted to use a value list of those dates to target a portal row. i.e I select Nov 19, 2001 from the list, click a button [go to portal row number (by field?)] and (pow) I jump to Nov 19, 2001 in the portal list. The problem is, I can't find a way to get the index of a selected item in a value list to use as my target to get to the related portal row.

I am using FM version 4.1. In my database applic. I use a field as container and I import 1 to 3 images (pictures) in a repetition field. I has reached a file size of 2 gygabites and more than 6000 records. There are no way to increasing this size? Which are the limits on the size of a file? The FM returns a topic sayng "this file has reached the maximum size for a file or the hard disc is full..." But the HD has 10 gygabites and there are 5 gygab. free. This is the message I often get in the network application: "This record is currently being modified by "name". The record isn't being modified by another user and according to what I found in the forum it has something to do with portals. What is exactly happening? How do you solve this problem? I have created an order form we fill in while our customer is on the phone with us. We enter the Product ID and auto enter the description. We offer quantity discounts, for example; 1- 12, 13 - 24, 25 - 50, 51 - 100. I've run across this scenario more than once and I hope someone has a solution. I have a regular date field and then a calc field that produces just the MonthName and Year from the date field. If I specify the data type to be date then the data appears wrong. So I left it as text. But now I want to return a value list based on that calculation. When I do, the list is alphabetized by the MonthName. How do I get the list of dates to show up in order in the value list?

I am trying to creeate a new stock database for my company but I am having a simple problem.(I hope that the answer is simple.) All my stock can have up to three catagry listings, put simply this is Department>Catagory>Subcatagory. My problem is that I can not limit the lists that appear on a pop up list for entering new product lines. This will make entry a very long business I have over 80 subcatagorys in all which is too many from which to make a choice. I have been asked to produce a report from a database unfortunately the user needs it to be based on one field using the value lists for that field as the column headings. Then the value in the columns would be date information. I am not experienced enough to know if this can be done. Each record has modified/create date time but the field in question doesnot have date information. Urgent! Urgent! I need to show the value list in checkboxes and the last item in checkboxes should be "Other", besides "Other", there should be a field which allows the user to type in the other values they want. When I choose "Include Other..item to allow entry of other values", the "Other.." box not only includes the new value I typed in, but also includes the values that I chose from the checkboxes, which is not what I want!! I've got a nagging minor problem that I cannot figure out. I have a series of fields that I enter data into for each new record. I would like to be able to simply tab through to the next field and make my data entry process speedy. This works mostly, except for three fields that have drop down lists. I have set my tab order, and double checked it, but when I get to these three fields, the list does not drop down, nor can I enter any info into the field through the keyboard. File A : ProductTypeCode / ProductSerial / Productdescription / Budget File A has an internal relationship between ProductTypeCode and ProductSerial File B has a ProductTypeCode field that is formatted as a value list. When user chooses a certain ProductTypeCode, the value list of the ProductSerial field (also in File : only displays the ProductSerials related to the ProductTypeCode field. So far it works. I've got a client who wants to be able to move his data around on the screen - he's doing scheduling for a manufacturing process - and I'm probably going to have to write a front-end to do the graphical interface. Is there any support for drag-and-drop within FMP? What I mean to ask is, is it possible for a user to grab an item in a list and drag it into a location (say, "zone a" or "zone b"), in which case the item being dragged then gets "zone a" put into its "location" data field? I hope I'm making sense, but I feel there's no way to do this in FMP, and I'll have to do the front-end after all.

This is probably simple. I've got a db of images, and I want to put a list of them up on a search-results page. To use space better, I want the list to be a grid (ie, say five images wide) rather than a strictly vertical list. I can get this to work in preview mode, but not in browse mode. What am I missing?

I either got the script or the list depending on which was forward. The status value field is the status of software trouble reports. Looks like it's been trashed -- on network server with no password. <sigh> Trying to restore from server backup as I type. In desperation they opened the database in MS Word. Try it yourself! Is there any way to prevent users from scrolling using the Ctrl-Up or Ctrl-Down arrow keys or a wheel mouse? (The wheel mouse simulates ctrl-arrow keystrokes.) Even with the password option for menus set to "none" users can scroll through records on both MacOS and Windows. I have an interface where the layout changes depending on certain field selections in each record. I've built first/back/next/last buttons that change record and layout accordingly, but I just (accidentally) discovered that users can change record using the Ctrl-arrow key shortcut or the wheel mouse, thereby screwing the interface. Ack! It's multi-user, FMP 5.0v3.

The Financial Summary report in Docket has one portal that lists all of the invoices and their amounts for a project, from the file Invoice. It also has a second portal that lists all of the purchase orders and their amounts for that project, from the file PO. Please help, I am having a very basic design problem which I just cannot get my head around, I have a sytem off about 10 files - Contacts,Invoices,Projects,Images,etc. Problem: I need to be able to set up a mailing database related to the 'contacts file' by 'contact Id', I need to store details of the mailing ie. mailing history .What if I make each record in Mailings equall a seperate mailling and show all the contacts in a portal does this sound sensible or am I missing something, I would also need to "mark" the records in the contacts file. I have a database of sporting events, with fields Sport and EventDate. I have a calendar made of 37 portals (matching CalendarDate1 to EventDate, CalendarDate2 to EventDate...CalendarDate37 to EventDate) displaying all events for each calendar date. I have successfully laid out a statement using a portal to list all of the client's outstanding invoices. The portal row contains: Invoice date, Invoice Number, Job description and Invoice amount. My problem is the following: How do I break out the amounts in the portal and total them into separate areas (on the statement)for 30 Days 60 Days 90 Days 120+Days Obviously given the fact that I have successfully bloodied myself I now realize this formula(?) How Can I make a drop down listbox on a data entry form default to the last chosen entry such: User clicks on addnew. User picks Company Code from a drop-down list.
