I downloaded the FP7 Trial Version and ran into trouble converting my 6 related files, i.e. maintaining the relationships, dealing with the security system, etc. Upon further inquiry I found that the "migration" to FP7 will take some time to facilitate, as per the pdf on "planning your migration". My boss is already up in arms with the cost of upgrading each of our networked licenses whenever Filemaker comes up with a new version, and now he is outraged that the upgrade isn't streamlined enough for easy conversion.     Using 10.2.8 and FM 7 upgrade to 5 and updating a 24 file solution. With FM5 one layout = one window and hiding made window management easy. With FM7 there can be multiple windows. Instead of using hours to find the best way to keep windows from multiplying like rabbits in springtime when going from one layout to the next, I decided to come to the forum.     Hey kids, I've been playing around with a two-file system: one multi-table data file, and one interface file. Putting all scripts, layouts and value lists in the interface file is very easy; the final piece is the calc fields. While this is also easy enough, a problem arises when you want to show a calc field in a list or portal view. For example, when viewing a single invoice by way of the interface file, the total can be shown with a Sum ( lineItem::amount ) calc field.     What happened to type-ahead selection of items in popup menus? I often used large popup menus for selecting values for fields in Filemaker 3 thru 6, where typing the first few letters of an item would scroll to that position in the list (given that they were displayed sorted on an indexed value). It seems like we should be able to do this as in Layout mode, if you have the Object Size dialog showing, anytime you click gives you the coordinates of the mouse.   13. Maybe someone can help with an up grade problem that I have with going from FM6 to FM7? In FM 6 a text field would recognize the text within the field and not slice the word at the end of the line (just as the text is done in this field). Whereas in FM 7 the same text in the same field is now sliced up at the end of the field (right margin) and the words are not respected as a word but not are just characters.   14. I have a solution, written in Developer 7, that uses the new windowing scripts. On a Mac, the windowing is perfect, but on a PC, when a script places me in a new window, the window in the background looses it's maximization, and the Windows border shows. This makes the solution look awful. Has anyone seen this, and how can I work around this issue. I have tried the "Freeze Window" script step, but to no avail. Any thoughts would be warmly received.     I have noticed a strange problem in FM7...one of many unfortunately. When I try to move any graphic (image, field, text) I can move it only a short distance then I get a black circle with a slash through it and the move doesn't work. I also have seen graphic elements change to diffeent layers after such a move...requiring the elements to have to be brought back to the foreground to be seen. Each time I drag an element, the screen flashes and frequently gray boxes appear.     I've encountered a screen redraw problem when scrolling a long list of records. There are actually two. In the first, the screen does not always redraw correctly with the result that in list view one record appears overlapping a 2d appearance of the same record. This is somewhat sporadic, but it happens enough to be noticeable. The more serious problem is that when scrolling a long list of records (1,069 in this case), the further down one scrolls a blank white space begins to appear at the top of the window which gets progressively wider until by the time I scroll to record 1,050 the entire screen is white with no records at all showing.   19. I need to automate a search. I have a Donations layout with donation date, donorName, donorID, amount given, etc... I need a search that will show all records based on amount given every year for last 3 years from user inputted amount. So, the query would automatically check current date and then look back 3 years, and display everyone who has given say between $100 and $500 every year since 3 years ago. I have database.fp7, with the non-full-access account user_1, who has access only to several fields in table_1, as well as execute-only access to several scripts.   26. I am at a loss with this one! Please help! I have a solution that has File1 and File2. File1 has a portal in it to create records in File2 via relationship. When I run a script to insert the date into a field in the portal (thus creating a new related record in File2 with an ID number as the matching field), for some reason, my lookups in File2 don't happen. And worst of all, it is intermittent.     In my initial brief look at FM7, the one glaring thing I have noticed is that text on layouts is horrible. Text is fuzzy and appears out of focus. Trying various options to make it more acceptable, I can find no suitable option that gets the fonts to look like they did in FM6. Am I missing something, or is this design intent. If this is design intent then in my opinion this will probably make FM7 layouts useless for a significant number of people.     I thought I read that FMP7 was going to provide field formats for such common uses as Phone Numbers, Social Security Numbers, etc.. I've search through my demo version and can't seem to find this. Any ideas? BTW - I love the ability to relate files more than one relationship away, the new live security, the visual realtionship chart and the conditions you can put on realtionships.     Can somebody help me please, I'm going crazy. I have recently upgraded to V7 and find that a summary field is not giving me the correct result. I am working with two database files and the summary field (from the master file) is returning the value for one record only rather than the group of records. When viewing a layout - any layout - in Preview Mode in FM7, it appears to be perfectly normal when viewed at normal size, i.e., Zoom at 100%. Some of the descriptions are very long, some are very short. I've had to make the Body Part in the layout very long as well as the description field, and this is resulting in a lot of dead space. What we are making is basically a price list consisting of 5 or 6 different tables, each table for a different type of tea (green, white, black, etc).     I'm setting up a FM7 solution to replace an SQL db. Customer street addresses have been entered as: "145 River Road" I'd like to modify this imported data to split it into two fields" Street Num and Street Name eg "145" and "River Road" Naturally there will be a wide variety of prefixes in front of the street name, including street numbers, apartment letters, perhaps no numbers.   54. I can't figure this thing out! In file1, I have a text field that has data in it that is a phone number. The data was entered by two different people, so some of the 600 fields have verdana size 12, some are verdana size 10. In file1, why can't I force the formatting to be a specific font size? And, in file2 which is related to file1, when the phone number shows up in a field or a merge field in a layout of file2, the data formatting is variable as seen in file1 where the original data lies. When I go into the define field mode and start to enter a calculation, the screen is so tiny that I have to get real close to the monitor and squint.     When I call My Films DB I can no longer see the fields content. I read <unrelated table>. I In the Finder the file is 6 MB so all the data should be still there, but I am not able to see it at all. Opening Database>Fields, all the fields are there: all the text, number and date, although they don't appear in the browse mode, while the calculation fields don't work anymore as the "table" got either corrupted or I don't know what. I can't export anything either as the Export command is not available. I created other tables but they contain no fields. I am lost. How can I get this file to work again?     Here are a couple of issues i have with ver.7 list boxes. First Has anyone noticed a subtle (but anoying)change in the way drop down lists work in ver.7 compared to ver.6 and before? When I tab into a firld formated as a drop down list I used to be able to press the "down arrow" and get the first item highlited on the list then I just hit enter and the item was placed inthe field. In ver.7 although nothing appears to be highlited when I tab into the field by preessing the "down arrow" as before I now get the 2nd item highlited.     I'm looking into doing a database that will use Tablet PCs for people to be able to write handwritten notes as well as use popup menus to enter data. Is there a way to have filemaker store these handwritten notes in a current record?   65. I was wondering if anyone has successfully run multiple instances of FMP Pro using Mac Os X (Panther) fast-user switching? I'm imagining a scheme where one user logs in to OS X, launches FMP Pro, then another user switches to their account while leaving the original user logged in, and launches FMP Pro again. Does anyone know if FMP Pro will handle this gracefully? I'm thinking of FMP7 but comments regarding FMP5 and FMP6 are also welcome.     I am not sure if I am seeing a bug with the new Replace contents command or if I am just doing something wrong. I am trying to replace a date in a master table with the max of the dates in a related table. Using the replace contents function either from the menu or in a script results in a number being entered into the field, it looks like a Julian date or some other internal representation used by FM7.     I'm puzzled. From FMP 7, I explicitly insert a Word document in a container [the document, not a reference], and it opens fine from IWP screen. But if file is pdf, Acrobat Reader launches after I say Open, then says "There was an error opening this document. File does not exist". ANyone know what's going on?     Just have to get hsi one out of my system... I love that new ability to set any field to a calc field to format the field. I've got a bunch of users that are used to DOS bases systems where they get to type "T" into date fields to automaticaly insert Todays Dates. They also are in the habit of typeing "T+3" to get the date for three days from today, among some other formulas like this. Now I can use a text field with some fancy schmancy calculations to give them that function. AND.. I get to set the settings to accomidate all those who still hit ENTER or RETURN to move from field to field. (I used to have to do all sorts of fixes to get rid of unnecessary…

    I have a database that opens a window for editing a record. I have an OK button that commits the changes, and a Cancel button that reverts the data. I would like to be able to turn off the committing when a user clicks outside the field. If I turn off auto-committing, it asks the user to commit the changes. I don't want it to even do that.     I realise that topic of font appearance has been mentioned several times already in 7 But it really is aweful and renders applications un-presentable. Does anyone know anything that can be done to improve them. Also is is even slightly possible that Filemaker will issue a very quick update that will turn their anti-aliasing feature off and revert to the OS. There was nothing wrong with the fonts in ver.6.     FM7 seems to have bugs in layout mode - or just be extremely slow. When I try to drag anything in Layout mode, it takes about 4 seconds before I get any reaction from FileMaker. Then, once I've positioned the element, it takes another full second for FileMaker to recognize that I've released the mouse. In short, it feels like I'm wading through molasses. This happens both on my home computer (XP Pro, 1600x1200 resolution) and my work computer (W2K Pro, 2560x1024 resolution). I've tried re-installing FM7 but still have the same problem. I don't understand that this was not available even in 1.0 to begin with... The 7.0 Trial I have running locally takes about 5x the time to do something as my 5.5/6.0 over a server. It appears that FM7 (not server) can save a copy of a file while other P2P FM7 clients are connected. FM6 could not do this.     If anyone is interested, I have attached a file demonstrating one way to do horizontal portals in FM7. By defining multiple portals horizontally next to each other, each one with only one row and setting the initial row larger each time, a horizontal portal is created. By creating a key that can be scripted, scrolling can occur. One must be careful with the sorting though so pay attention to my sort records in the relationship definitions.   91. In the past I've usually connected all of my solutions' files to a "variables" file where every file relates back to the variables file. The variables file contains a single record and a bunch of globals (the variables). Not uncommon. Here's my question regarding FM 7: is it possible to do this without relationships in multi-table files? It seems that it is. In other words, can I create a Variables table, not relate it to anything, and still access its global fields from different parts of a multi-table solution? It's about 25% finished, at best. So, the way I see it, no time like the present to move to 7.     Although I'm sitting at a stand-alone XP (with cable modem) after converting a mult-file solution, I received the "exceeded license" error message and FM7 quits! when I try to open one of the files. The other 5 files open just fine. I still have Dev5 installed--could that be it? I've tried converting the single file, and still get the message. So, right now I've gotten 95% of the solution converted! (BTW it looks awful, but you knew that). Any ideas as to why I'm exceeding the license? I'm totally legit in the install, of course. Something I'm working on would be great to have a new popup window open to allow a user to do a find - however, I'd like to not have the toolbar visible. All the find - and after find functions - like new request, omit, sort, etc. will be triggered by buttons.     I have some questions that relate to screen ergonomics. 1) Is there a way to increase the font size at the DEFINE DATABASE dialog box.     Hi we currently have a FM5.5/6 network solution with a copy running on a server as a host. I also access it remotely via ADSL. We need to upgrade with extra licences (I guess that means to v7). I am confused as to the benefits of using FM server as distinct from the solution we have now. Of course Server v7 isnt even available yet.
