We have currently developed a POS solution for restaurants, and would like to add the ability to identify a waiter using some kind of hardware gizmo (smartcard, badge etc...). Once the waiter is identified, a script should be triggered based on the waiter id. The plug in should work in both Mac/Win FM7. Does anything like this exist ? Who should we contact to develop it ? Thank you Version: v7.x Platform: Mac OS X Panther

As I've been looking over FM7 to see if it's suitable to my needs, I've read a number of comments in the forums here re. the ability to use files that contain only layouts and scripts to serve as an interface to separate data files. That would surely simply my projects, but since I'm still looking over the trial version, I haven't been able to figure out how to do that. Haven't found the right section (if it exists) in the help system. How does one use editable fields from a data file in a Layout file? I don't see how one creates a relationship between the tables in the two different files without having fields in the Layout file. If I insert fields from the other fi…

I know the fuzy fonts are a result of the new vector graphics engine in FM7. I may be able to live with it a little easier if I understood what that new engine was doing for me. What I want to hear is now I don't have to try to make graphics exclusively with FMP or Claris Works in order to have the most "optimized" graphic to push across networks. So what's the benefit of the new graphcis engine that causes our fonts to go fuzzy and all those reuslting headaches and eye strain? Version: v7.x Platform: Windows XP

Maybe it's just something I'm not seeing .. but is there no way to specify a dynamic path to a file for the insert file script step? Maybe most people know at the time they're writing scripts what file(s) they're going to want to insert later and where they can be found, but my case this step is almost useless without that functionality -- unless the user points to a file. Sometimes when selecting Grouped objects the handle bars of all individual items are selected and it seems that the item is ungrouped - when in fact it is grouped. Other times when moving objects around on the screen with the arrows - duplicating and dragging. the handle bars are disembodied from the object. If I select an object say a button the handle bars are highlighted elsewhere. or another object is selected instead. - (It's like an out of button experience). Usually I just go to browse and back to layout. Or I have to Copy all objects and cut them and re-paste them on the layout. I had a database unexpectedly quit after doing my layout gymnastics. And wh…

Hi, Sorry if this has been asked, but its tough keeping up with tht flood of info these days. I'm still using 6, and have looked here and on the FM site but don't have an answer yet. In FM 7 is it possible for an end user to perform a find and/or sort and then save that find/sort to be called up and applied again at a later date? (That is, without having access to the scripts.) It's always seemed to me that this shouldn't be that tough, given the existance of the 'modify last find' command. If FM can remember the parameters of the last find, then it seems it should be able to wirte these parameters to a little file (that isn't a script) for later recall …

Anyone know how to propagate new accounts and password changes with a multi-file solution in FM 7? Is it just a matter of scripting the account & password to every file at the time of the change? Or is this a case where an external authentication server would be best? What I'm looking for is a way for an account to be created automatically when HR adds a new employee, and the password to update in all files when a user changes his/her password. I have tried on two different simple test databases to create a portal. One main table with a sub table connected via relationship by ID fields. Relationship and portal creation was easy, but I cannot enter any records in the portal. When you click on the portal it flashes but you cannot enter into the field to create a record. You can go to the Sub table and enter a record with a matching ID value to the Main table, fine, but when you go the Main table and view the form with the portal there is no data visable in the portal. I have covered all the extras, like making sure field format is setup properly, you know allow entry and so forth. I am not a novice at this, but be…

We currently have a FMP solution where a single table is accessed by three different FMP "applications". One application allows User A to add new records. Another application allows User B to modify and close the records. The third application allows User C to search the data. User A <> User B <> User C If we migrate to FMP7, will we be forced to combine all these applications that are using the same related table, into a single FMP7 file? if we create all in one solutions with a many table, I am certain that ScriptMaker will become somewhat of a pig. FM will have to consider script set (like the way you can create sets for layers in photoshop). Or something. Also, I think it is time to have it so we can text edit scripts. How many times I would have loved copy paste script then find replace variable.

I anyone else have trouble with portals in preview mode? I have a layout that worked fine in v5.5 that is choking in v7. It consists of some fields at the top of the layout, a large comments field, and a portal at the bottom. Everything slides up, depending on field contents. The problem is that the portal does not always appear for the second or third records on a page. The first record on each page always displays correctly. It's not just a conversion problem. The same thing happened when I tried to create a similar database from scratch in v7. FYI, I'm using the trial version. We'll see if it persists when I install the full version in a day or two. …

I'm trying to set up a relationship with an invoice table where I want all invoice line items on invoices after a certain date. There are three tables in question Invoices, InvoiceLineItems, and Inventory. Invoices has a Date field, InvoiceLineItems has a ProductCode, and Inventory has ProductCode and a global Date field. What I want is a relationship between Inventory and InvoiceLineItems with two conditions: Inventory::ProductCode = InvoiceLineItems::ProductCode, and Inventory::LastStockCheck < Invoices::Date. In FM6 I used to store jpeg references as global field repetitions. I employed a series of scripts to get the image from particular repetitions and make it show up in a container field. If you wanted cabinet number 6 to show up over here, you clicked on an image of 6 and bingo......image 6 would show up! FM 7 does not appear to have Global Fields like this. Okay, maybe I'm just a dope but I can't figure out how to script a simple find. Here's what I do in v6: The user presses a button which puts him in the find mode. He then enters an example of what he is searching for in one or more of the fields. He pushes return or enter to execute the search. I can't get this to work in 7.0. One difference is that I have the field behavior set to go to the next field on tab, return, and enter. This is a very cool feature that should keep the folks from entering unwanted carriage returns at the end of fields. I realize that there is a find button in the bar on the left side of the screen but I have replicated it's fun…

Most interesting. I got an enquiry from a client in Japan (who are really happy about 7), about resetting a font to the layout default, after an import. I discovered that our old work-around, setting the field to itself did nothing. So I tried the new Text Formatting function, TextFont(). It worked. Then I tried my old "MergeStyles" file, which had a letter text field, with custom merge fields Substituted by calculation. In pre-FM7, I was preserving styles through a calculation with an AppleScript routine. Amazingly it now works fine as is, styles are preserved by the calculation engine. We can build real letters folks, native, cross-platform! Version: v7.…

Looks like FM7 has some of the features I've been looking for, like ability to export to Excel and integrate with PDAs (that is, if I am correctly reading the specs for Mobile 7, it will work with runtime apps??) However, I have some concerns. The font issue may be a problem for me. I already had to change some fonts to get everything looking "clean" cross-platform. But, the layouts on my MAC are already a bit fuzzy (while clean and sharp on the PC). But, I have a few more important questions... 1. The system requirements. Does this mean that an FM7 runtime appl will only run in Windows 2000 or XP and MAC OS-X? I have users still running Win 98, ME and OS…

In fm 6.0 I used a lot of globals to put data from a customer to an invoice (both related with a constant). So in fm6.0 I started in the customerfile, used a script to put the custid in the global custid in the invoicefile and after creating a new record I put the global in the custid of the new invoice. I don't know if I used it well, but now I did the following: start in the customerfile, perform the script with custid as a scriptparameter, create a new invoice and put the scriptparameter into the custid in the invoice. It worked So you don't need all those globals anymore. Is this a correct use from the scriptparameter ? I wonder what will happen if 2 peopl…

Very paraphrased, the technotes have details. I listed ones that I thought are common issues. The 10 is a coincidence, not a reference to Dave Letterman's Top 10... 1) Boolean calculations (including scripts) are now short-circuited. 2) FM7 uses TrueType fonts only. 3) FM7 uses a new anti-aliasing engine for text and vector graphics. 4) Count() now evaluates only non-empty data (it used to include empties) 5) Numeric expressions including text return 0 instead of empty. 6) Substitute() has been expanded to allow nesting in one call. 7) Semicolon is the new calculation parameter separator, comma was the old. 8) Field validations occur on record…

After creating FM7 Databases vs FM6 Im very pleased. My favortite New things With FM7 In Order 1) Multiple Relationships! We finnally have multiple relationships in FM7 on multiple fields. Before in FM6 we had to combine fields to create a multiple relationship. Not only that In FM6 Theres a 22 character relationship check in FM7 you wont have that problem as much since you can you multiple fields. This also saves you from creating extra useless fields for multirelationships. 2) Users can now change calculation fields. Before in FM6 you could not edit a Calculation field in browse mode. 3) Color Font Size Based on calculation... This is great for showi…

Enclosed is a simple db with people & their favorite foods. I want Commit to work a way I think it can't... The layout has "Save record changes automatically" checked so I don't use FM7's confirmation dialog box. There are two buttons on the layout: Cancel and Save. Cancel's script does Revert Record/Request [No dialog], Save's script does Commit Record/Request [No dialog], both return to the list layout. If fields are modified on the layout and either button is pressed BEFORE normal comittment, the buttons work as expected. A click outside of all fields, or pressing return, commits the record normally and it can't be reverted. If the layout is not set …

Just playing with a trial version of FileMaker Pro 7 and i got a question. For a solution i made for myself (in-house so to speak i have three tables like this with the relevant fields; Results (ID, Category) Results_Placings (Results_ID, Place, Points) Results_PointScales (Category, Place, Points) In earlier version i needed some multi-field keys to lookup a value in Results_Placings::Points based on the Results::Category and Results_PointScales::Place values. It should be possible (i guess) to solve this in FMP7 with relations but i seem to be unable to accomplish this. Wrapping my brain around the new relational scheme of FMP 7 seems to be hard…

There are some of us that run FileMaker Unlimited, but not server. I for one use unlimited to serve up my web solutions, and dont really need the server version. This is NOT an available option with the new version. If you want the capabilities of unlimited for web access, you have to purchase their FileMaker 7 Server Advanced. The cost, almost $2,500. Holy SH!T. Great for those that currently run server and unlimited, but WAY over the top forcing unlimited users to have to purchase the new version with server too. Reminds me of the tactic for when we went from version 4 to version 5. Version 4 did not have a limit on the number of connections. Version 5 requir…

I am unable to move my Traditional Chinese fields to FMP7. I originally imported them in my FMP6 as plain ASCII, then assigned a Chinese Font to each Chinese field. This system no longer works. Converting the tab-text files returns unpredictable results: Word seems the only program able to operate, however if I create a text-Tab file exporting every Traditional Chinese field, then saving it as Unicode-Text, FMP7 just refuses to convert. If I import one field at the Time it works around 50% of the time. Other conversion through Text-Edit-Plus, Apple's Tex-Edit or Cyclone never deliver valid files. Another headache comes from Word. It converts Linefeeds within fields i…

I've waited this upgrade for the Unicode and/or Traditional Chinese for months now. Multilingualism is not among the plus in Filemaker main information page for this version although it seems to be there. After downloading ver 7 I saw a truly cumbersome way to handle the fonts, nor a real explanation about this matter in the help file. Transferring 2Bytes Chars text from ver 6 delivers unreadable garbage. Probably because in ver 6 the only way to use 2 Bytes words was importing the 2 Byte Chars in ASCII format and assigning Chinese fonts to specific fields. Now : I tried to export my Chinese fields from 6 in tab format only. They open properly in Microsoft w…

I'm unclear on a couple of things after reading a bunch of the information about FMP7 on FMI's web site: 1) Is CDML dead? It seems like it isn't mentioned and XML, XSLT, XHTML, etc is mentioned a lot. Is this just in relation to "instant web publishing" and I just missed the section on "custom web publishing"? 2) Will Lasso work with FMP7? 3) Do we need to spend $2500 on FMP Server Advance to do web implementations (instead of $1000 on FMU)? And at that, does it really only support 100 remote users? Or, is this all in relation to hosting directly into a DB via TCP/IP? 4) I haven't read all the security briefs yet, but is record level security in there?…

I have a FM solution created in v 2.x that has grown to a very complex 12 file solution. With FM7, I have decided to recreate the solution instead of porting to take advantage of the new features, rid of some very old structure/fields/scripts no long needed, and because I am suspicious that one of my files may be corrupted. Can I import data definitions into new tables from old files to save on some typing? In previous versions importing scripts was supported and I imagine still is, but is this safe with the question of a file that could be corrupted? Could file layouts that are copied and pasted into the new file be subject to bringing any corruption over? THANK…

Just wondering if anybody else was feeling a little inadequate now that a realatively new release has come out. Over the past 10 years or so I've built up a level of confidence and started to hold myself out as a self-proclaimed expert. Just been cruising around the Demo of FM7 and my dream features ain't there: to export digital images to a folder with the primary key as the file name from which they came. Yes, you can do this under the edit menu one image at a time (and thats after I've had to assign the primary key to the file name via Photoshop) via Export Field Contents. Try doing that for a thousand images! And yes there is a similar script step but it seems to assign the file name in sequences that don't relate to the primary key of the file: this is important so I know where that image belongs when it comes back from printing with the file name on the back of the print. I hope I am missing …

Greetings, I am a student in a database specialist class and one of class projects is to do a presentation on several database software systems and their compatibility on the Windows, UNIX (whatever flavors, including Linux), Apple, and Novel Netware. Our research is to include the pros and cons of our chosen system running on the above mentioned platforms and how that compare to other systems within the same platform criteria. I felt that maybe the best resource would be from those who use the product and shared their information within a community of other users. I really like the relationships window, its easy to see how everything relates.. Multi-criteria and comparative operators are powerful extensions to relationships. Multiple tables in one file is also a powerful feature. These features alone will reduce my development time, database complexity, etc. Value lists are still weak. There is no good way to have a record's serial # in a value list followed by an apropos field of info. An option to hide the first field would be great. I've been editing fonts to make numbers blank & 0 width so the serial # is not visible, works OK if the values do not contain numbers. I like the Browse, Find, Layout and Previ…

So in filemaker 6 it works like this: three files A, B, C a is related to B and B to C. Placing a portal in file A with related records in B, one can create a calc. field in file B with data from file C. and then place this on the portal in file A. So FM7 is supposed to have multi-level relationships... I created this 3 table structure in a FM7 file, and I can't figure out how to place the fields directly on the portal 2 (or more) files away. Is this possible? More specifically the tables are as such.... Table A (Sales): sale_id Table B (Sale_Items): sale_id, sale_item_id, inv_id Table C (Inventory): inv_id, inv_desc How do I c…

It appears that live backups are possible with FM7. I just performed save a copy... of a hosted file with clients connected to the file and editing records. With FM6 you had to kick all the users to do this. So I guess with applescript or a scheduling plugin, you could do unattended automated backups without the need for FMS. Since my system will never reach beyond 5 users (he says) , I could get by without shelling out $999 for server. Has anyone else noticed this? Version: v7.x Platform: Mac OS X Panther

My first impressions are: I am happy and sad: Happy because: fm becomes a mix of the best things of fm and access Sad because: You have to rewrite your apps. because of the serious change I convert my fm6.0 28 file application . A lot of things went wrong. 1- the links between the files - in fm 7 databases - are corrupted. The links are pointing to another folder on my pc while all files are in the same folder 2- the colors in the layouts aren't that sharp anymore 3- the script on certain buttons are gone or moved a few pixels higher So rewriting will be the only possibility A lot of new things to learn. I need an new advanced book with all th…

Is there any way of embedding external tables into a new FMP7 style 'single file, multiple tables' database? I've checked out the docs for FMP7 and FMP7 (Developer) and neither appear to offer this facility as far as I can see, yet it seems like a really useful / critical feature for upgrading old databases. Am I missing something? Version: v7.x Platform: Mac OS X Panther

Hi all, I have the trial version of v7 running on WinXP. Just playing around with stuff really, just seeing what's about. Do you remember the post about the effects of pressing the escape key in a custom dialog box. Well if you did not see this, the discussion was along the lines of the Escape key acts as if you have pressed the default button. Many developers thought it should be used to either just exit the dialog box with no effect or to act as though the cancel button had been pressed. So if you have a script that does something if the OK (default) button is pressed in a dialog box, and the user presses escape to get out of the box, FileMaker acts as if t…

I see that we will still have to resize the columns in the Define Fields window every time we open it. Does anyone know if we can open the Define Fields window on a live database, or do we have to close everyone out of it like we do now? Oh, and does FileMaker still open every database (or table) that is referenced by a relationship or calculation like it does now?

I am quite new at this, but i have been trying to inserting files into a fm-file. I know about the "insert object" in the past versions but the problem with this is that the user have to manually choose "Open existing", "Show as Icon", "Link object" and so on. I know that if i use this there will be problem in the future. I would like to force the user not to do wrong. In FM7 i saw i new feature, "insert File". Great, i thought! But the problem with this is that if i insert a dokument (not link) in the db then i cant open it just by clicking on the container field (like insert object), i first have to export the document to the local drive and there open it by double…

I have a question for the Filemaker whizzes out there. I am the owner of a graphic design firm who has recently taken on doing contract work for a local marketing company. We currently use a filemaker database to track all of our clients. I would like devise a simple solution for making proofs available online to customers through Filemaker 7. From the mucking around I have done at this point this looks possible. We currently have a server running OS X 10.3 with a small website being hosted specifically for serving client proofs. We currently drop our proofs in folders for the clients and then provide a URL for them to download or view the proof in their browse…

Well, now that I've had a night to sleep on it, here are my thoughts: I have to say I LOVE being able to pass parameters to scripts ... that'll save freakish amounts of time. Also, having more control over windows is great ... as are many of the new functions, though the usefulness of some I'm sure will not occur to me for some time. Now, on to the whining ... (will we NEVER be satisfied?? .. hehe .. no). - Portals. Still only work vertically (a horizontal or grid portal woule eliminate a lot of workarounds). Also, why has it not occured to anyone at FileMaker that just because you click somewhere else on a layout does NOT mean you want to scroll to the to…

I was hoping FM 7 would be fully Unicode-savvy and able to display all kinds of scripts with minimal trouble. For example, I expected that the program would search the fonts on the system and use whatever is present to display utf-8 characters, as does TextEdit or Mail or most browsers. However, on importing tabbed utf-8 files containing a number of scripts, I find that each field has to have its font set separately. You can set one default font for a field in Layout View, but if the field then winds up with characters not contained in that font they will show up as boxes until you manually go in and change it. Is that the way it is supposed to work, or have …

This is probably a stupid questions, but here it goes. I have about 80 lisences for FMP6. They sent me the offer this for the upgrade price. Will this cover all my seat lisences? Or would I in-theory have to buy 80 upgrades? I'm little fuzzy on this issue.

The FAQ about FM Server 7 says that you can use the client for web publishing if you have no more than 5 simultaneous web users. Does that mean there are half as many users possible as with previous versions (10 IPs in a 12-hour period), or is there a different way of measuring how much traffic they can receive? It seems like 5 simultaneous is a lot more than 10 in 12 hours, but maybe the wording is just different. And is only Instant Web Publishing supported from the client? It seems that way from what I've heard. Anyone know what the education price will be for Server Advanced? $2499 is awfully steep, and people who shelled out for the almost unusable Unlimite…

I am a diehard fan of FileMaker, but you would think that by FileMaker 7 we would finally have the ability to specify the file paths to files when importing and exporting via a calculation. To add insult to injury, they now allow us to type in file paths in a text like field (even multiple file paths) when scripting imports and exports, but still provide no option to determine these paths via a calculation. You can calculate almost anything else but this. WHY!:? It seems intentional!!! This has got to be the most glaring omission of an otherwise great product! Any one else think this is utterly rediculous??? Version: v7.x Platform: Mac OS X Panther

Multiple windows PER table. No more losing of a found set, heck you can have 5,10, 15 found set windows. OH, and you can even NAME your open windows (so you do not forget what the found set is!) Best not get me started on formatting text On The Fly with Calcs and from scripts .... and I am not talking about Proper, Upper or Lower, but font color, size, style and eventhe font itself) And let us not foget. Gone are the days of creating hundreds of global fields so we can have an option to say "Are you sure you want to add this record/update this record" and scripting the creating or editing of records. Now we can have a confirm changes (Commit Records) only o…
