FileMaker Legacy fp3 and fp5

I am new to Filemaker and I am trying to customize the "Contacts" template for my medical practice by changing the "Company" field to "Specialty." I did that succesfully by redefining that field's name, however on the tab on the bottom right, "related contacts" there are choices to show contacts related by Name, Company or City (with "radio" buttons). I want to change the button for "company" to read "Specialty" but I can't figure out how. I would appreciate any help. Thanks. Version: v5.x Platform: Windows 95/98

I am having a problem deleting a record. It was obviously corrupted somehow, as strange things were happening. I exported the record and then imported it back in and all seems well with it. I then tried to delete the corrupted record. It won't permanently delete. It disappears from the found set, but doesn't disappear from the Record Count. If I do a search on field for a value that I know that record had in the field, that record comes up. However, all the fields are completely blank even though it comes up in a found set. A user I support is unable to print one specific file (on a local, USB Brother 1440 or a networked HP 4300). The printers are working fine. Other FM files print fine. I've moved the file a MAC (OS X) and it prints (different printer). I moved the file to another XP machine and tried the same to printers and also was unable to print. I am trying to establish a relationship between two files. In the first file, I have names and addresses of physicians offices. In the second file I set up a relationship to the first file using the physician name field. My goal was to have a pop-up list of all the physicians for selection. When I get to this physician name field, I do see the pop-up list, but when I select a physician name, I see an error message "The field cannot be modified until "physician name" is given a valid value. I am new to filemaker. Having previously used access and vb to do my work. I decided to use filemaker for a small database at work and found it quite useful for "quick & dirty design" however I have found the scripting side of it or more to the point reference and user guides a little on the lame side. Can anyone suggest a good reference or web site to get a much more "advanced" look at the scripting possibilities within filemaker. by the way I am using filemaker 6.0 under windows XP. As i said other than this frustration I guess you can say that I am converted to filemaker.

(this template will either be in Filemaker or MS Word (not definitive yet). In FMU 6 for OS X 10.3, I have WebCompanion configured to publish Access, Error and Info logs, but they are not in the FileMaker Pro 6 folder and I can't find them elsewhere on my hard drive. I've been trying to move my FileMaker Pro Unlimited hosted web site from 5.0v3 on OS 9 to 6.0v4 on OS X. The problem I'm having is that after hosting the site with FMU 6, the validations I have been using under FMU 5 don't work any more. I have a form that is filled out online that goes to an error page if filled out improperly that works perfectly under 5, but fails every time under 6. I am using validations in the field definition, and Range, Not Empty, Data Type all work fine, but if I try to validate using a value list or a calculation it ignores the validation. Is is possible to disconnect guests from a database via a script step? I can set the database as Single User, but if someone is connected they get a dialog box. I am having problems with two related file that I have associated to my main database, both files have lost data at some time or another, both still keep the relationship to the parent record, but most but not all of the data in the related record is gone, this has happened in two different file, both to the same relationship, and One has happened twice, I spent hours retyping the missing data, then one week later it happened again. hi, Filemaker Pro 6 has no vertical scrolling using a trackball or mouse (Kensington and Microsoft products) with the mac under system OSX in Jaguar and Panther? I bought FM6 but am forced to still use FM Pro 4 under system 9 because under sys 9 and earlier, vertical scrolling has ALWAYS worked on all of my mice and trackballs with scolling buttons. I just downloaded the demo and opened the primary file of a multi-file web-shared solution built in FM6. I use the Web Companion to share the file(s) and all works well. But when I opened the primary file in 7 and had the file recreated as an FM7 file, and tried to share it, I can't. I first went to Sharing-->Instant Web Publishing and tried to simply turn it on. I am asked for my Admin Password, which I insert, and then get a long Spinning Disc. We have a FM 5.5 (win) database with thousands linked objects. The linked objects are inserted from subdirectories on a common O: drive. But is seems like the filename is expanded to the UNC when inserted, e.g.: O:datafolderinfo.xls becomes: SERVERdata$folderinfo.xls Now the PROBLEM is, that we have to change network organization, which makes the UNC invalid, but the O:... location will still be correct. Is there any way to automatically search through links in a FM database and correct them? Is there a way to write a script (in 5.5, v6, or v7) or can any plug-ins do the trick? Can anyone tell me some info on this template. I'm looking for a 6 degree separation type of template in contacts/company relationship and this seems to have some nice options for assigning relationships of introducers and relationships - although I can't see a screen that displays contact within a company - which seems odd. I've just reinstalled Win XP for an organisation and put apps and files back on including File Maker 5. When their database is opened it takes longer to load than it use to - it opens up loads of forms (excuse the Access terminology I haven't used File Maker before). I increased the buffer size (or something like that) as suggested in the manual but this didn't make any noticeable difference. I have created several letters that are slightly different. Each of these letter is created in a different Layout and each is given a distinct layout name. I need to be able to at a glance in the footer of the letter decide which layout was used without having to look for the subtle differences. That could easily be accomplished using Status(current layout number) and Status(current layout name). I've created a field (using a calculation) in each of the layouts which displays that particular layout's name and number. Hey all, I was wondering if it was possible to attach files to records in filemaker? I know you can insert pictures and quiktime movies, but would it also be possible to attach certain files like powerpoint or word docs, so that it works like a hyperlink and opens the file when clicked? As by topic, is possibile to disable the scrolling of a mouse-wheel in FileMaker5 to prevent that user change the record currently active? For me, it's important because in form view there are various buttons that perform various script/action and if the user change the record unawares.... Thanks in advance.

Does anyone know of a way to turn this dumb message off? There must be some mechanism to disable that message, which occurs if you press a key while on a filemaker layout but have not actually click in a field. The particular layout I have has no fields on it (a locked screen layout) and if a key is pressed that error message comes up. Filemaker then stops whatever its doing until the OK button is pressed. As a workaround, I'm using a third party software product called Buzof which automatically dismisses dialogs you specify. But, its a messy work around Cheers! Steve

For example, there is a group a, b, and c and they all have different values. The thing is, I want a user to be able to log into one database and choose whether they want to modify either a, b, or c, instead of having to go to a separate database for each. I have been maintaining an FM database which is used by a mixture of Mac and PC users running version 6. The files are stored on a Mac Server although not using FM Server. I use a PC running Developer 5.5. I have been doing updates and all sorts, each time working on the file at home then emailing it back and have not had a problem. I have just completed a major update that necessitated creating some extra files purely for reference. In the same way I sent the files to the customer. Im using server 5 and when I paste shortcuts in the server directory they are not opened on the server. However if i paste in the actual files then they are picked up and it works. Anyone have any idea with this? Thanks Simon

All, We are using FileMakerUnlimited 6.0v4 with WebCompanion 6.0v2 on MacOSX 10.28 server. We are having problems with intermittent "unexpectedly quit" messages when accessed via web. I have been following threads about "unexpected quit" but have not found any "definite" solutions on MacOSX. Some have mentioned that they have found stability after upgrading to Panther. Would users of FileMakerUnlimited on Panther tell me what they found in terms of stability. Has upgrading to Panther server gotten rid of "unexpectedly quit" messages. Thank you, Ken

I have 4 databases affected: 1) parts.fp5 2) parts_list_items.fp5 3) quotes.fp5 4) quotes_line_items.fp5 I have a layout called "Quote Template" in parts.fp5 where I can list options that a customer would want. Someone might have a simpler solution to the common problem of returning to the current record after performing a scripted find step. Here's my solution: 1. The dB must have two fields, a unique match field such as a serial number (RecordID), and a global field (gNum) 2. Create the relationship: "ReturnID" defined by matching fields "gNum=::RecordID" in the current dB. 3. Perform the following steps in the find script: Set Field["gNum", "RecordID"] Perform Find [Restore, Replace Found Set] # or whatever find parameters you need Go to Related Record ["ReturnID"] Any easier ideas?

I am going to get a new computer to run the server from and have as a kind of backup storage (which I wont be able to with file sharing off as I have just been informed as recommended for the server to run smoothly which is a shame). I am using FM4.1 on Win 2000 server with 6 win2000/win 98 clients running FM4.0 and 4.1 (updater 3) Had a problem with pictures which I was imbedding in DB causing DB to grow to 800mb. After advice from forum changed to import picture script with tick box "store only reference". DB dropped to ~20mb and everything fine (about 18 months ago). Noticed in last few months that DB had grown to about 400 mb. Checked to see that users were ticking box by changing active directory so that linked pics showed as "cant display XXXX.jpg" and for those that did show a picture assumed were imbedded and then deleted those picture. - Fine DB growing again so did a test. - cleared …

Excuse my newbieness here, but am new to FMU eccentricities OR am I looking at a larger problem? Client has installed FMU on W2k. FMU set for Web Companion and all Dbs are multi-user, open and hosted/published on server. I have noticed that some things that work in standalone FMP do NOT under FMU. 1) Have noticed that any button that calls a script which has ONE line to launch an EXTERNAL script in another open DB won't show rollover OR work. We have a few databases running on a Mac G4 sys 9.2 FileMaker 5. The databases are related, using portals: teachers, schools, projects, groups, etc. They are shared by the client using Open: Hosts. The databases have been set-up using Aliases in the Startup Items Folder. We have had difficulties in one database 'finding' a related database. We have overcome this by having each of the databases open on the server. Is this necessary? Do the databases you wish to share HAVE to be open on the server, or should they be located and opened simply by making a request that calls into action the relationship. Just last week I noticed that the server wasnt working I tried repairing, and restarting the server but to no avail (filemaker server 5.5 is on a win 2000 server machine) when I try opening a file on the server itself I get that a 10048 error code network error (which i didnt get b4). I have shortcuts to the files in the fmserver.exe folder so I can't understand why they aren't being hosted it was working a treat? Hi, folks! We have a terminal at our front desk that several people use on any given day. Some users leave the db on screen in FIND mode so it's ready for the next search when someone asks them a question, but they also update these records so do need to have EDIT ability. As a result, though, sometimes data gets messed up because someone starts typing before realizing they are not in FIND mode. I know the answer is to just tell folks to be more careful, but I'd like to hear if this is a problem with anyone else and if there are any tricks to minimize this. Hi Folks, Our IT folk are trying to move from a Mac OS 9 based FM Server (5.5) to a Mac OS X (10.2.8) based FM Server (5.5). In our initial testing when we try to serve one folder containing 12 files to the Mac OS X based FM Server, only 9 of the 12 files are available when viewed from a remote machine. Yet when I copy the same folder to my Mac OS X (10.2.8) mac, I can serve them via my single user FileMaker Pro (6) just fine. i.e. all 12 files appear when accessed from a remote machine. I have been using Filemaker for a number of years here at work, but want to take our department database to the next level. Until now, we have been working with one database that we either copy to our desktops, modify and return to the server, or sometimes opening multi-user mode, which has generally been extremely slow. I'm at a loss. Everything works fine with my DB when I'm using it on my Mac, but as soon as I try it on Windows 2000, certain layouts will crash Filemaker with this message: I have multiple files files in this database and the layouts that crash FMP are all contained in one file. The weird thing is that only 2 out of the three layouts in this file will crash FMP. One of those two won't crash unless I start to scroll down the layout. I want users to fill in text in a text field up to the bottom right edge, then have the box not allow any more characters to be typed. As it is now, the box enlarges as long as they keep typing. I need to do this because the text field appears on another layout that has space limitations. Is there a way to "lock the box" or even specify how many characters it can hold?

I have a database that lists the names of employees working for a company. Each record has their name and the room # they are in. If there is not a employee in a room the record will only hold the room #. What I would like to do is create a new layout in this database that has a picture of the floor plan as the background. I would like to be able to print this out with the names of the employees over the room they are in on the floor plan. How do I go about getting 1 print out with all the names and not 20 print outs with one name on each? What I need is an extra two fields. One for 'Order Qty' where the customer can enter required quantity, and the second where it will total the cost based on the price & Qty entered. Do you need to have filemaker server and unlimited together? We are running unlimited only. All of a sudden none of the updates to the files are available from the web browsers. i.e. from a local client with filemaker there are 512 records. From the web the same file only shows 375 records. I have some databases that crash immediately after putting in the password. the odd thing is, the ones that crash on the Mac host open just find on the Windows host, and the ones that crash on the Windows host, open just fine on the Mac host. I need to host all the databases on the same box and have already tried recovering, cloning w/no records and importing, etc. all to no avail. I am new to FileMaker Pro and am creating a baseball statistics program for my baseball team (i am a high school coach). I had no problem at all creating individual players stats records with formulas that will automatically calculate batting average, earned run average, on base percentage, ect. What I would like to do but do not know how is combine the stats from each individual player's record and create a team statistics record. Hi I have developed a piece of software using FileMaker Pro 6. I am thinking of upgrading to FM Developer 6 to deploy this (using the developer tool - creating a stand-alone runtime solution) to our clients. My question is what exactly will they be able to access and screw around with. Would they be able to re-develop it for their own use - without our knowledge? I don't want them to use this for themselves in another way. If FM Dev 6 isn't the correct solution for securing the software integrity - does anyone have any ideas? Have client that is using Novell Netware 6 (instead of previously planned NT - surprize!), w/ Apache 1.3.x running (finally). The client's outsourced network guys (ONG) have demonstrated a lack of knowledge in running apache let alone FMU. I know very little of Novell, and am having trouble detailing our needs. As I understand FMU, we need it running on the host AND the dbs open (all w/ the requisite web companion configurations enabled) on the HOST. How can I compare the data in one FM data base file to the data in another FM data base both having the same fields? I have someone in another city that inputs sales lead information. Hi! Have you ever done so much research into an issue that you end up more confused at the end? Well, that's where I'm at right now. I'm about to attempt my first go into publishing a couple of db's on my XServer with FMU 6. Now I know I'm supposed to host my files on one machine and publish on another. I'm currently running FM 5.5 on my iMac at the moment, and haven't loaded FMU 6 just yet. Point of confusion: If I load FMU 6 on my iMac and publish the db to my XServer, then I should have unlimited clients accessing the db's online? Also, do I have to load anything onto my XServer (besides the db's) in order to handle FMU?

Hello, I have a horseracing database with over 50,000 records and climbing daily. Each record has over 200 fields, some data, some calcs. I think I might need to change the way the database works, but I'm not sure what is the best way to go. Because of the format of the the external raw data (past performances) each record is one horse in one race. By now I have different records for the same horse, where the horse has raced on different dates. It would be useful to have one record for each horse with its each previous run and associated data.
