I have a portal showing LAST NAME, FIRST NAME The relationship is dynamic in that the user can choose via clicking a button, to show only last names starting with A or B or C etc. They can also type in and see all names starting with JONES, SMITH (or any partial letters). All of this works perfectly. However, the portal doesn't always sort correctly. I have tried sorting at the relationship level (LAST NAME, FIRST NAME) I tried sorting at the portal in the layout in the same way. I've tried with both on or one or the other on. Hope that I can describe this problem. I have a check book with a starting balance of 300.00 dollars. I want to use the portal as a general on going balance sheet. I have not found a way to add a expense or a deposit and automatically calculate a on going balance as the new protal record is created. This is what I have done so far. Hi everyone, I am pretty much familiar with FM. I have been using a home-grown solution that started in 2 [?] and has grown over the years and has served me very well. Now, I want to automate some of the tedium, and need some help. The relevant tables are proposal, invoice, and tasks [a simple flat list with the usual taks-list fields]. I have a simple database with three tables: ActorsTable (ActorID, ActorName) JoinTable (ActorID, SkitID) SkitTable (SkitID, SkitName) with a Portal (JoinTable::ActorID)(ActorsTable::ActorName) I am using a value-list based on the fields ActorID and ActorName (from the ActorsTable), to add the actors to the portal on the skit table. So, here's the deal. The pieces: 1: "Quote" database (where my company stores quotes to customers for parts to be sold, etc) 2: "QuoteElements" database (where the individual line-items for the quotes are stored, each as a record) I have 2 portals in my main layout of the Quote database. One portal shows the items available via a standard one-to-many relationship, based on the Quote's UID. The items in the portal are the line items for THAT quote. Hi All, I'm creating a patient database for multiple clinics ("Locations"). So, I've created two tables Patients and Locations. In the Patients layout, I have a pulldown menu that displays all of the available Locations. When a Location is chosen, Locations::Key field is tied to the Patient record by Patient::KeyLocation field. Here is my problem. In the Location layout, I want to show a list of all patients whose Patient::KeyLocation matches that particular Locations::Key. Hi everyone, I have a question regarding strange field behaviour that I've seen a couple of times. I'm quite sure that it's a result of one of the many gaps in my filemaker knowledge and I won't go into detail because I'm certain someone will recognise the symptom... Basically, I when I fill out a field in a portal row it seems to fill out for *all* records, depending on which table occurence the field is directed to. Or just fills out the one field but where that record should show up in another portal (via a relationship based on the problematic field containing that value), a different record appears instead of the one that should. I'm stuck on two issues. See my attached sample database. Go to the "Songs" layout - it should open on this layout. Read the "Notes" section on each of the seven records in the "Songs" layout. Issue #1 - I think this will be fairly easy for a FM genius to solve. I have a portal which shows transactions, in descending date value. I would like the users to be able to add records using the portal. The issue is that the fields where you may add a record appear at the end of what can be a long list. I have recently converted a FM5 data application to FM7 hosted on an OsX machine. The conversion worked very smoothly but I am finding little things that do not work right. This one is being a real problem. The customer file layout has a portal to an order file; the order file is related by a customer number. The order file is also related to a line item file by the order number. A new order is created from the customer layout by a button that creates a new order record through the portal on the layout then opens that orders file and allows the addition of line items through a portal in the order file layout. Hello, Suppose I have a portal containing 40 names, in ascending order, and it is configured to show 10. I have a script that adds a new record and then highlights this newly added record. However, if I add someone whose last name is "Smith", that record will most likely appear out of view. Is there any way I can scroll so that the newly added record appears? I was thinking of using the Go to Portal Row step with a calculation, but I don't know a way of determining in which row "Smith" appears. Regards, Sean Mills

I've attached a sample of a standard portal. Our users edit the text from within the portals, and as they select each row, they 'see' less text each time. The fourth row of this portal only shows one line of text, rather than all three lines as with the first row in the portal. Is there any way around this ? Thanks in advance . . . portal.zip

Hi I'm moving some old simple multi-file FM 5 databases over to FM 7. It's for tracking Assignment Scores and should be easy but I'm having some trouble. Currently I have these tables Student * StudentID * Name Assignment * StudentID * AssignNo (1-4) * Mark plus some other stuff I've removed to keep it simple. OK, maybe there is another way to do this but I wanted to keep it simple so maybe there is a good suggestion out there. I have a portal, within which I may have 1 record, and may have as many as 150 records in it. I want to format a page to print the records in the portal but I cannot seem to find a way to do this so it uses only as many pages as necessary. If I put in 'show 75 records', the portal takes up more than one 8.5x11 page on my page layout, but I assumed that if I clicked the box in the the sliding/printing feature, it would ignore the format. It seems it's my week for show-and-tell. I decided to put the post here in portals in case anyone else ran into the situation. Portal data is date/time fields. Photo 1: As you see it displays incorrectly although the data is correct and it is a date field. Photo 2: Clicking into field fixes it. Photo 3: And it STAYS fixed until I minimize the FM application window. Upon opening FM again, the fields have revered back to wonky. Okay, I don't know how well I will describe what I want to do, but hopefully someone full of knowledge will help me. I want to create seperate tables that categories distinct bits of information. For example, it is a bunch of products. I want everything in product A to be in its own table, everything from product B to be in its own table, etc. I want to be able to have a title distinguishing them. I’m new to Filemaker. I use FilemakerPro 8 on an iMacG5 OSX. I have been able to successfully relate 3 tables (Customers, Line Items, and Invoice). I am stuck on how to get the Line Items into the Invoice layout. I have tried using a portal, but the number of rows in the portal that I set up may not correspond with the number of rows of line items that are to be viewed in the portal each time an new invoice is created. I am working for a PBS station and currently I am working on putting our pledge activities in a database. For our TV pledges, I created a program table, a scheduling table and a program_premium table (a table between premium item and program). I join program table to program_premium table, then join program to scheduling table. The data entry works great. All you need to do is add a program record and add in the pledge breaks in a scheduling portal, then select the premium offer in the program_premium portal. Hi To All, Is it possible to extend a button on a portal row based on a calculation in the realted table? (Maybe through repeating field.) Hi, Not sure if this is the correct forum but I think my problem is to do with portals. What I want to set up is a dynamic customer entry field on a jobs worksheet. It is reasonably important that this sheet is as simple as possible as mouse to keyboard movements should be limited, and end users have low end keyboard skills - i.e. not computer operators) On this jobsheet what I would like staff to be able to do is start typing the name of the customer and the field will auto fill based on typing. Hi, I'm trying to think how to create a calendar / scheduler like that provided in Outlook. I want to show 1 day at a time, and then have 20 or so 30 minute appointments displayed (for a Doctor Surgery). I thought of creating a 'Date' table and then a portal (Appointments table) with appointment times, but, I really want blank appointments to be listed (so we know what's free), and the only way I can think to do that would be to create millions of mostly blank records in the Appointment table before releasing the software. Hi all, I have three tables, one with client details in, one with stock details and a third which I am creating to store 'want lists' of clients. eg Client A might want a t-shirt that is red and size XXL, so I would add a record in the third table, which has teh colour and size fields filled in. Then when I am browsing the stock table if I browse to a t-shirt that is red and XXL, the portal would show the Clients name, showing they are interested in it. I am not sure this can be done. I have tried setting up several different scenarios and relationships with no luck. I would like to have a single field portal, showing contact name, running alongside my contact name layout so that I can click on the name in the portal and the correct record shows on the page as well. I know I have seen examples of this or something similar but I have not been able to find it. It is intentionally very simple and i am trying to contain it to as few layouts as is possible to make it as easy as possible to use. As I continue to work my way through the FMP 8 feature set (I've had good success using portals on tabbed layouts), I find myself stalled on a couple of fairly fundamental issues: What FMP features exist to display a sequence of fields from successive records in individual fields on a layout WITHOUT using a portal? What is a "recommended" way to delete a specific group of records once they have been selected and displayed in a portal? I am trying to use a set of three selection portals to pick the Items to display in an item purchase history. The portals are Groups(of Items), Items, VendorItems (Items sold by a vendor). The Main display portal should display VendorItem purchase history. How it works now is you click on a GROUP name(in FIRST portal), the list of ITEMS in that group displays in the SECOND portal, you click on a item in the second portal and it displays the list of VENDORS that sell that item in the THIRD portal. I'm trying to make a summary of some portal fields but I'm not sure how to do it. I'll try to explain this as best I can. My first table has just one field in it thats an ID number and it's the primary key. Then in my second table I have three fields: an ID number, an objective number, and a score. In the second table there are muliple records with the same ID number each with different objectives. My database is a job log of graphics work. I want to display an overview via a self-join relationship in a portal. Is it possible to have a portal within a portal? Heres a basic idea: You have authors who write articles that are put into journals. Each journal has multiple articles. Each article has one or more authors. I want to have a layout using the journal table. On this layout I want a portal showing details of each article in the journal. Having 3 problems with a portal in an invoice situation. It wont show the related records when I tab out of the product ID field unless I click into the window, or the record has been committed by hitting the enter key. Despite enabling the vertical scroll bar checkbox, no scroll bar appears. Despite setting the number of rows at 5, only 1 row appears, so I can only enter 1 product record. Hi, please try downloading the file. Add an item to the todo... works fine, right? Empties out of the entry field and goes down into the portal list. Now, go into define database and add a new text field to the ToDo table, called anything. Now try adding a new record to the todo list. Doesn't work, right? What the heck is going on? I want to select 1 of the records from my Projects portal and then I have 2 more portals; 1 for ideas and the other for progress. Then I want to show the many ideas in the Ideas portal and the many progresses in the Progress portal that relates to the project that I selected in the first portal. Hi I have a portal for a "Session Notes" table in a "Client Details" layout (based on a "Client Details" table). The portal displays multiple notes on each client record. The "Session Notes" table is related to the "Client Details" table by a "Client ID" field. What I want to do is print out all the session notes displayed in the portal for the current client record via a "Session Note" report. The report is launch by a button on the client layout. I'm guessing I'll need a script with go to layout "Session Note Report" and do a find using the current client ID, but I lack the knowledge to do this.

I have a database with a layout that has 2 portals. We will call this db A, with related db B (portal and db C (portal C). I am trying to create records in portal C from data in portal B. Here is the script I have. I can get one record to be created correctly but can not get past that first one. I have a button for each record in portal B that performs: Go to Portal Row [select, "db C::field A"] Set Field ["db C::field B", db B::field B"] ...and there are a few other set field lines. I am developing an invoice history file for my company. Invoices range from 1996 -2005. I have created tables for each year (both for header and related line items ). What I want to do is use a user interface with two portals (header and line items). ARG! i cant seem to get this script to work correctly. I have a solution which includes a layout. Essentially what it is A master order layout with a protal into production orders. Each production order ads an 01..02 ext sequential number to the master order. thus a master order of 1234 becomes 123401 and then 123402 as you add more production runs of that same order. In the begining i was having problems with users not commiting the record becuase they were tabbing through the layout. I want to exclude records from a portal based on a radio button in the original record. Without having to set up a seperate relationship, just like I would use a "constrain found set" in a report script Is there an easy way to do this? In more detail.... I book radio presenters into editorial sessions, using a join record that takes PresenterID and SessionID joining them together with a in a new record with a time. What is the preferred solution for printing after going through so much effort to create a good portal? Hello: I have a customer layout based on customer table with a portal based on invoice table that shows invoices for each customer. Question: How can I filter the portal to show invoices with balance different than zero? Currently the portal shows all invoices; invoices with a balance and invoices with 0.00 balance. Can I combine the data from portal rows to fill one ordinary field? I have two tables linked by a one-to-many relationship. Records in the one table show related records from the other in a portal. Ideally I want to export the records from the one table with a new field combining the data from the relevant portal rows. I am having great difficulty in getting a summary of a field in a portal. I have acres in a portal, the use types in the number for each type of crop in this portal. There is a field outside the portal that sums up all the acres. When I type in the acres it won't display the sum, but when I leave the layout and come back the sum is displayed. Also when I change a number for acres and click outside the portal then the updated sum is displayed, but when I tab out of that field to the next in the portal the summary field goes blank again. I have a file which shows 2 portals, Portal A and Portal B (3 files in total) and I want to be able to give 2 buttons to act as the Page Down and Page Up keys for Portal B so that I can scroll down to select a record to be transferred into Portal A. The portal rows in Portal B show related records based on a parent key in the main file. I want to show 10 lines in Portal B so that when the user clicks on the Page Down button the portal shows records 11-20, 21-30, etc. It must also stay showing the last portal row irrespective of the number of portal rows on the "last page". Similarly a Page Up button would work in the opposite direction. Can anyone help?

Is there a way to make a file not show up in the portal if its flaged? example...these are my files White this is flaged WLT WST WMT Black this is flaged BLLT BLST BLMT the White,Black, and WLT,WST,WMT,BLLT,BLST,BLMT are the same field named SKU I don't want the White and Black to show up in the portal. Simple family database. Two tables: households and individuals. One to many relationship between them. Simple layout showing household records with a portal showing individuals in each household. Both tables have a surname field. (Sometimes household surname and individual surnames are the same, sometimes not.) For Individuals::Surname I’m using an auto-entered calculated value giving the Households::Surname as a starter. I have been looking around these forums for more than a week seeking all the info I can about portal filtering. There are some pretty ingenious work arounds for 1 to 1 and 1 to many portals but I am having difficulties moving these ideas to many to many. Let's use the classic Class and Student example. A class has many students and a student many classes. The first included example shows these two tables with a join table between them. I have an orders database that I am attempting to set up. There are three related tables that seem relevant to the problem. Inventory --- Contains data about all items which can be ordered. Hi ! I have again a new problem... I have created a portal (showing only 1 row) with correctly defined relations. But what ever I try there is always only the first related record. And I wanted the latest to be shown. I have tried to sort the related file and define the portal so that it would sort the related record with no results. Hi I have a portal on my Overview layout showing records from a Quotes database that I'd like to filter with a series of 5 radio buttons: Faxed, Emailed, Approved, Requoted and Abandoned. Each radio button has three states--'Yes', 'No' and 'Don't Care'--which indicate how you want the filter to work. OK, I have a PO system with a line item portal. Pretty standard, from my understanding. The portal records are related by Purchase Request #, so the recid of the purchase request is auto-entered into the line item, hence the record in the line items database. I have a line item total, now I just need to total all the line items with like por#'s. I really have no idea where to start with this. Please help! Thanks!

I've spent the last 1 1/2 hours reading and searching to find this answer so please help. I'm sure I'm missing some stupid little step hear. We get paid monthly advances towards our final billing. I'm putting together an invoice that calculates the total fee and deducts advances and gives me a balance. My first thought was to have a summary field that sums all advances. I put this in a portal on the advances layout. Then I would also calculate the final fee (Based on a percentage of the annual salary) and write another calc that would deduct expenses from fee_amount. I need to duplicate records in a FileMaker 7 database which includes portals. The data in the portal fields in the record to be duplicated does not appear in the duplicate records. Similarly, I have not been able to use the "Replace Field Contents" function to replicate data in a portal field in a found set of records. I have a layout that lists tanks. I have a portal that lists options for that type of tank. There are three types of tanks, liquid, nonpressurized, and pressurized. I have a button in the portal that adds an option from the list when you click on the button. I want a field that tells them if the option has been added to that specific tank. I have three tables. One is Tank, which lists the tanks and their id#, the second is the options table which lists all the options and the type, the last one is the tankoptions table which matches up the tank id with the option id. Last question and I think I am done with this solution. Thank you for all of the help I have recieved. Is there a way I can "click" on a record in a portal and navigate to that specific record. I thought I could use the script step "go to related record" but it doesn't seem to be working. I'm working on a database with, from left to right, the following tables (and TO's) bound with relationships: teachers - programming - course - enrolment - student In teachers I have connected (through programming) a teacher to a course. And in students I have connected a student (through enrolment)to a certain course. I have astablised a portal with information from teachers in student. This shows the teacher that is leading a certain course. So far so good. But there are courses who have more than one teacher. Hello I've created a database that archives all of our company emails. There are currently over 5000 records in the database. I've tried using a portal and a custom sort key for subject, email name & date. Sorting the portal can take up to 10 seconds or more, so its quite slow & painful to use. The custom sort key is a global field and is unstored so indexing can't be turned on for this field. Is it that portals are just to slow for this and I should stick to list views? Or am I doing someting wrong? Main reason I wanted to use portals, I can have a highlight field in a row, I can also multiselect rows (with a hightlight as well) and the interface is quite …

I have two portals with the same table for both. In one I have a one line list of three fields. The second portal is all the information from the table. I want to be able to click on a row in the first portal and have the second portal go to the same record to display all the information for that specific row. Is there a way to put the focus on another portal when you are in one already and to select a portal row based on a primary key? Hey hey, I have a file that holds my scheduled meetings (let's say 4) per day. I would like to show, through a portal, these four meetings. But hold on, it gets more complicated. What I already have set up: I have a portal that is set up as a relationship (Menu::Date <=> Events::Event_Date). So, of course, the portal will show all records pertaining to field Date in the database "Menu." I have a layout on it with several portals.. it is a calendar layout.. I have an inventory file that holds the details of products sold: item number, description, upc/barcode, retail price, wholesale price, etc. When a wholesale customer comes into the store, he picks out the items he wants and indicate to our sales associates how many pieces of each he wants. Does anyone have a clever way of displaying more than one portal in any given area (one at a time obviously). I am trying to show a breakdown of some departmental totals and I only have a limited amount of space lets say 2 square inches. When I click on any one subtotal I would like to be able to display the breakdown of that subtotal on my 2 sq inches. I'm using a system to highlight a portal row by using a calc field which picks up a chip from a repeating container field. The calc result, clearly, is container. The individual rows pickup their "highlight" chip just fine, but the open last row of the portal (this portal allows record creation) also picks up the highlight chip. How can this be? There's no data for it to link to. How can the nonexistant calculating container field pickup data from an unrelated (no key fields filled) table? Please help.

Hi everybody: I am having trouble filtering a portal. I have a standard Invoice table linked to an InvoiceItems table. The Invoice table has a calculated field InvoiceTotal with the following expression: InvoiceTotal = sum(InvoiceItems::Linetotal) On the graph I have Invoice and Invoice2 with the following relationship: CustomerID = Customer ID and gAmount < InvoiceTotal (gAmount is a global field in Invoice table) The portal (Invoice2) placed in the Invoice layout does not filter by amount. Hi all, I've got a database of people, and I want to display a list of addresses (home, work, etc) for each person, related by an ID number. Because addresses have lots of different formats, it seems like the best way to do this is to enter the data in several fields, and then concatenate them with a calculation that does some formatting and leaves out empty fields. I've got this working, and I can display addresses in a portal nicely. I have a client database that we use on a regular basis, runnning in FileMaker 8. Displayed in this client layout is a portal containing the user contact information. Such as; Name, Phone, email. I am tring to create a script so that I can click a button in the portal row to send an email to the user of that row. This works for the first entry in the portal. If I click the button in the second or third portal row the email is always addressed to the email recored in the first row. Any ideas how I get my script to pick up the email address from the second or third row?

I want to create a new record in a database, using a portal, then add to that record using the related data. I was just doing GOTO last portal row, then GOTO specific field, then instert field x into field1, and then insert field w into field2, etc. But every time I do this it either updates the very first record in the portal list, or, if I play around with a goto portal row command, starts creating new records for each value. I'm sure I'm missing some basic element here.
