  1. I'm building a database of real estate properties. I have fields such as: TITLE, SHORT DESCRIPTION, MAIN DESCRIPTION, DSCRPTN 2, DSCRPTN 3, PIC 1, PIC1 CAPTION, PIC2, PIC 2 CAPTION, PROPERTY TYPE, AGENT and so on. The main output for this database is sell sheets. HERE'S MY QUESTION: I would like the user to have the ability to--once in a layout--choose which fields populate which areas. I'm thinking of a dropdown menu (suppressed printing) by each "field area" (sometimes it's a picture box, sometimes it would be a text box) so that the user can choose which fields populate that layout of that record, at that time. Can this be done?

  2. I have a database containing "client" records and another containing "contact" records. These are relational and I wish to write a standard letter for the "Contacts" using a new layout. When I insert the merge fields to be used the <Name> comes from the "Contact" database but I want the other information such as <Company> , <Address> etc to come from the "Client" database. Whilst I can choose these merge fields from the "insert merge field" by choosing a related database (i.e "client") when I preview or print I don't get any information across ?? Pretty new to using Filemaker so if you can advise me I would be most grateful. Cheers guys.

    We are using File Maker Pro 6 on windows XP. One of our databases has a form that is too large to print on one page, even if we use legal paper set as landscape. The owner will not allow us to redo the layout to be more printer friendly. My question is, how do I make filemaker 6 for the PC shrink the layout down to fit on one sheet of paper without changing the layout? Is this possible? Thanks!

    I am working on kiosk db. I have a "Search" layout that the user can use to find specific book records. After hitting the search button, the user is taken to the results Layout which is in List Mode. If they would like to see the information for a particular title, how can I take them to a Detail Layout for that one record? I would like something that functions like a web hyperlink- meaning they can click on the title and go directly to that record instead of having to type anything in to a new field to get there. I have found 2 ways so far. First way is using global variables. I set the field(s) I want to copy into a global field in the same table.     This may seem elementary to most of you but I'm new to FM7. Is there a good tutorial or book that would explain how to add or create "tabs" on a layout. Something along the lines of the Personnel Records layout template that comes with FM7. If I wanted to add another tab to the 3 that already exist I don't even know where to start and exploring the layout it's not intuitive to figure it out.     Our server and most of our clients are OS X. But we have a few rebels accessing the databases with Windows - mainly XP. But nearly every layout looks different in Windows and they cannot print forms that they need. The fields cut out some of the test and even objust are in different places. FMP is supposed to be cross platform, but I am getting frustrated. IS there a simple way to get the layouts to look the same in both platforms? Tanya

It seems to happen at random but it always happens in the following order: 1. First, there will be any of a number of odd selection problems, including an inability to select/deselect certain fields; selection boxes staying put when the field they surround is moved; locked fields disappearing.     Hi there - I am using FileMaker 6 on XP with FM Server 5.5 on Windows Server 2003. I have attached a copy (pdf format) of the report that is printing in an odd way. The section that is not printing correctly is under "Loose Items to be Built and Sent with Job" and under "Crown, Knifemold, Toekick, Shoemould, Decks and Bar Tops".     Hi I am fairly new to FM. I have a multi-tabled project that I am working on. One table contains "families". A second table contains children. These 2 tables are linked by a family code. In the family table is the street address. All the children are seperate records in the children table.     I am having a problem with a layout that I am using as a contract. The layout is "Stock" 3 pages long but when in preview mode slides up to anywhere from 1-1/2 to 3 pages in length. It does this because I have a series of large text fields that shrink to fit the text within them. I have inserted a page numbering script that displays the page numbers as "Page 1of3". The numbering system works great! Here is my problem. The layout automatically wants to print 3 pages even if the last one is blank because that is how long the body of the layout is.     We have both Filemaker 5.5 and 7 in our network. I'm converting some of the files over to 7, but things are not going too smoothly. Today's problem is the page setup. In 5.5, the page orientation was remembered for each layout. In 7, all layouts default to portrait. If I set it for landscape, print and then close the db, the next time I open it, it will be back to portrait. Anyone else see this? BTW we have 7.0v2 on all the computers. It's a global problem with FM7. Tom

    What is with the buggy graphics in layout mode??? Lines looking cutup and such? If I scroll off screen and then back sometimes it corrects it. It has been that way from filemaker 5 to 7 and it seems that 7 is worse. It happens on multiple computers with multiple licenses. Is there a fix for this? Is it a Windows thing?

    Hi, Just when I thought all my problems had been solved forever... Enclosed is a small attachment that best illustrates my problem (if you run it but see no problem, please tell me anyway). My main file (Main.fp7) has a startup routine that executes a script to go to a layout in another file (Help.fp7). It goes to the layout in the other file, but leaves a visible reminder of the opening layout in the main file. It appears that part of the non-client area of the original layout has NOT been removed from the screen. I can find nothing regarding this in the product errata. On both layouts, I want a button to ADD various details of the record to the other table, so that name/address details will be copied across (or updated). I tried relating the tables through ID and using a lookup for the fields to be copied, but get the error 414 (layout cannot display the result) if I try to "Go To Related Record" in the other file (wrong use of the command !).     I have a order entry database. The original programmer (a long long time ago, in a galexy far far away...) decided to use repeating fields (see another universe). One of the repeating fields is a part number. The objective is to write a report that will give the count of orders that use that part number. I have a field "Count of Orders" that is a summary count on "sales order numbers" I create a layout that shows the part number and order number.   35. Why does FileMaker, even in version 7, continue to use the old style radio buttons, check-boxes and drop-down menus from the "Classic" Mac OS's. Under MacOS X the style of these things changed completely, and FileMaker's own GUI does use the new Acqua style. So why aren't these styles available to database designers? I've created separate layouts for electrical, plumbing, etc. Each layout is identical except for the receipt number, vendor (a pop-up menu), and the date. Although the other fields are identical they all have unique names, such as: elect_cost, elect_qty vs plumb_cost, plumb_qty and so on. The database works fine except for the following.     Hi, I was wondering if someone could explain how something works in the ContactsManagement Fm7 sample. When you do a find on a contact, a list view will appear and display all your matches. You then can click on one of the items in the list view and it will take you to the form view. What makes it do this? How does it know to go to that view?     Hey everyone, I hope I can find an answer to this. I have the main layout, which has a few fields. What I'm looking to do is have a specific layout automatically created everytime I enter data into a specific field. IE: I have fields for 10 colors set up. If I fill out 1, I want another layout (will have diff fields and setup than the main layout) to be instantly created & some data taken from the main layout and copied over (except for the diff fields of course). Client::ID = 1). I just can't figure out something... I have created a layout, a standard letter containing multiple merge fields.   48. I'm trying to get FileMaker to display calculated values in the color I picked through FileMaker's TextColor function when I display those in fields on layouts I created. For some unclear reason, the calculated values appear in black only, and only show color when I click on them. Is there a known workaround to this? I couldn't find information on this anywhere.     I have this old database for some clients who use it for printing stuff like envelopes and badges. I have rebuilt the database and copied most of the layouts over with the exception of the layouts that print envelopes, badges and other non standard paper stuff. My question is: Is there a way that I can copy the layout from one file(call it one.fp5) to another(two.fp5) and save all the printing margins and settings and what not? I have tried the simple copy and paste method but the printing comes out wonky. I would like to get this done since I am 1000 miles away from the paper and don't know the models of the paper or the envelopes. Help out! Andy

    in layout mode, i can't seem to position/size boxes and lines exactly with the size info box. for example, when i type a field width of 1.35 cm, it snaps to 1.341 instead, grid on or off does not matter. the set rulers command also snaps entered values to something else. putting several objects in a row, this creates quite an error, i.e. after 11 objects like this i'm off by an entire field.

    I just learned a neat technique that I've never run across in the Forum. To produce subtotals that run across a page, rotate your total fields to print vertically. Align these vertical fields tightly together, and you can get something like the following without having to use GetSummary Total for April May June Cost 1100 4705 3100 Profit 540 660 225 The labels on the left go in the footer (also rotated vertical) and fields for month/cost/profit (in this made-up case) go in the sub-summary.     I'm creating simple subsummary reports including a CounterSum field, to get numbers of items within various groups. Not a big issue. EXCEPT that when I start a new layout, blank, and add the subsummary parts, the printout is leaving somewhere around 5 pages of paper between the first line and the next one... and the next... etc. If I dupe an existing layout and just change the subsummary definition and fields, it prints right. There is no difference between the new one and the existing one, except that one prints right and one doesn't...   58. I notice that even when using cross-platform typefaces like Georgia and Verdana, some text-intensive layouts do not display the same on both platforms. It seems to focus on line height - a block of text laid out on the Mac, with a number of line breaks in it, lined up niecely with other fixed elements on the page, will not line up when displayed on a Windows machine - the line heights show up as higher, so the text runs longer down the page, not lined up with the fixed elements. Each person may have zero or more "stuff" records.     Hi! It's been a while. <sigh> RL can be a pain <lol>! I'm still with the calendar popup problems of always. I was hoping to finally get this resolved. All the good calendar popups seem to be shareware, naturally. And of those freeware ones posted by kind people one or two seem like they'd be almost as good but coding them into a solution has always been a severe problem for me.     I am having a devil of a time getting my records to layout in the fashion we require for our proposals. When I use list view it doesn't summarize the records by room but rather lists them individually. I put a portal in the body and it summarizes by room but then only shows one room. I have attached a graphic example of what I'm trying to achieve (.jpg) i would appreciate any ffedback that anyone may be able to offer. This ones been a real headscratcher for me. LOL

    This may be basic, but I can't figure it out. The browser/layout page size defaults to 21cm wide in accord with my printer settings (A4 size), which is about 600 px. I want to set it up for typical screen use which means 800 px would be reasonable. I don't understand why I can't just grab the edge of the page in layout and drag it to the size I want. Is that too much too ask? It would seem so, as the only way i can find to do this is to change the print setup to landscape format instead of portrait.   71. Hello. I am new to this forum, and I have a question about FMPRO 6. Currently, I have repeating fields setup where I populate all of my data. However, sometimes not all the fields will be used. I want to make a layout where it will check the value of a checkbox field. If the box is unchecked I want the data across that row to show up on my report. If the box is checked I don't want the data to show up. Also, sometimes I will have all 10 rows populated, but some of those fields will not need to show up.     Hi, I'm new to this post, and only familiar with filemaker and had a strange question. I'm currently maintaining a database that allows a variety of different users to input data. One of these users at some point inputted data into alot of records by cutting and pasting from another document. The consequence, the text in certain textboxes is not the same font as the rest of the text in the layout, and the rest of the records. These records are few and far between, so I'd prefer not to change them back by hand. So, better explained: The textbox on the layout is formatted for Arial Size 11. However, I'd like to give end-users the opportunity to rephrase the letters if they'd like, rather than stick with the default I provide. Here goes: To save paper, is it possible to take 2 separate list reports and put them on a single layout, one in the upper half and the other below?     Hi! I'm trying to figure out how I can shrink a layout to fit on one page. When I go to Print Properties and reduce (fit to page or custom), the records get smaller but no more of any individual record fits on a page (and no more records fit on a page). Does anyone know how to shrink a too-big layout to fit on Letter Portrait?

Having worked with MS Access I would simply format the input mask as "L>L >L>".     I have a multi-user database that has been used by my company for several years. i did not create it however i have modified it several times. we use it to print all different types of labels. Lately a curious thing has been occuring. While i am one of the only people to have the admin password (and the only one to ever use it) the font has been mysteriously changing on all the layouts.   98. I'm trying to make it so invoice totals only appear on the last page of the invoice. I have a field, gLastPageNum, which keeps track of the total number of pages before printing. I tried putting a calculated container covering the footer with the calculation, If(Status(CurrentPageNumber) ? gLastPageNum, gWhiteContainer, "") Where gWhiteContainer is a container in which I pasted a solid white rectangle the size of the footer (which I created in FM).     I created a large, light-gray box and placed it at the back of the body's layout underneath transparent fields merely for aesthetics . When I place a portal over this box none of the fields show any data. Fields outside the portal and over the box revea their data. I moved the field in the portal front-most and made sure that it was solid (filled, I used "white" in my scenario) as well as made sure the portal was solid. Nothing If I make the portal tranparent, the first record in the portal reveals itself, but no others Maybe I need to figure out better ways to make a "nice-looking" layout -Jeff
