  1. I know you can change the layout ordering via the layout menu, but the problem is that whenever I open my database, or go to it via the web, it always goes to one specific layout type... and it's not the first layout in the layout order. How do you change which layout type it opens to? I'm just trying to make it start with a list I made. Thanks!

  5. Hi, I am trying to automate the printing process. I have a form where I need to make a button that will allow you to perform a find first, and then take those results and print a report. I'm not really used to the layout system yet (coming over from MS Access). I make my printing layout so it looks right, but it looks goofy as a form view... only having showing one record. I don't want to confuse the user, so how can I make it so a certain layout (the final printing one) is ONLY in list view? I would like to do that and have a button to perform the search, then take those results and send them to the LIST ONLY layout... is this possible? Thanks Vandy

    Is there a way to get field borders to be non-printing? Whether I use borders, baselines or embossing, etc. the borders always print. For my interface I'd like each editable field to have a light gray box around it, but so far in order for it not to print I have to draw a box around the space or duplicate the field and make it non-printing.   7. I have a layout containing 2 subsummary parts in a database containing different products. The first should sort on a broad type (for ex: cables) the second should take the cables and sort them by cable type (ex: audio, video, etc.) and display the information for the 1st item in the list. Then under that subsummary it would show a list of all of the Cables that were audio. But for some reason it is losing it on the 2nd subsummary.     Hola everyone, Anyone know of a way of getting the FM graphic ruler to begin at position 0? If I go into layout mode and enable the graphic ruler, it begins at the "true edge" of the page according to my current printer configuration. So, the first x number of pixels on the left (could be 8, could be 18, could be anything) are considered to be the gutter and usable area of the layout doesn't begin there. It makes it tougher to position items if I can't rely on even numbers. I.E. if I want to make a 500 pixel wide window and my printer def is currently an Epson Stylus Photo printer, I have to wrap my thinking around an 8 by 508 working area. If I change to…

    I can't seem to make the ToggleWindow[zoom] script step work the way I want it to. The doc says that zoom resizes the window to the last previous defined window size. I thought that the way to "define window size" was to go to layout mode, resize the window by dragging the lower-right corner of the window, and then go to browse mode. However, the ToggleWindow[zoom] step still resizes the window to something else. I obviously haven't found the magic sequence. Can someone offer a recipe for creating a script that goes to a layout and resizes the window to a specific, fixed, window size? Thank you, Chap

  14. I have a file called "sales" showing sales for different companies for two products - A and B. The two products have to be in separate detail files as they have different pricings and definitions. I want to produce an invoice in "sales" showing all sales for both products. I can make invoices separately in files A and B but I can't produce a combined invoice in "sales".   15. I have a basic fundraising database for a non-profit org I'm helping. I have a set of fields defining bio info, contact info, etc. They want to have info on the spouse (in the same record), if there is one, but not to show the fields for this is there is no spouse. My thought on the way to do this was to have two layouts, and change between the single layout and the married layout based on the content of the marital status field.     I am attempting to create layouts in a FileMaker database to print CD and Cassette labels. I have a background graphic created in Photoshop that consists of a photograph and a logo. This design prints very nicely on an Epson R300 printer from PhotoShop or Preview, but prints at a totally unacceptable resolution from FileMaker. I've inserted the picture in my layout in every file format that FileMaker supports, but all of them print equally poorly. Surely FileMaker will allow me to print good quality graphics on a layout, Right? What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help you might provide.

    Not sure if this is related to layouts or printing but... I have been asked to fix a FileMaker Pro database that contains cassette labels. Each has an A and B side and a unique catalog number. Generally we need to print out the A and B side of one cassette at a time and we want to fill the page with the repeating labels--twelve to a page total. So we do a "find" on the catalog number which brings up the A and B records. We have a label layout for printing which we choose. When we preview, we only see two labels filled in--the A and the B side just once on the page. What we want is to have the page fill with six of each to fill the full 12 slots on the page. Do I…

    I'm trying to print a muiti-page form (with merge fields). Each has different fields, etc. Anyway right now I have each page in it's own Layout. is there a way to combine all the layouts into one? Is there like a "page break" function in FM that I'm missing? Also the curly line that's supposed to tell you the dimensions of the page is off. How can I change it? I tried page Setup, but the page is set to the correct size (81/2 x 11). I have a report with a header and a footer and subsummary parts that I want to print out to look like a table. the problem is, the table part consists of four columns per record that vary in length. I can set field borders, and if all four are one line each it looks right. But if one of the columns is two lines, then it alone expands, and the other three show a line at the one line point - meaning there isn't a continuous line between that record and the next.   20. I have created multi page invoices and am having problems showing the totals. If I put them in the footer they show on every page which is wring because the total of the line items will be ALL items not just those on the page. If I put them in subsummary or Grand Summary they plonk themselves directly under the Body and I want them to always be at the bottom of the page. I am clearly missing something fundamental but do not know what! To summarise I want one total per invoice on the last page of the invoice AND at the bottom of that page.     I have a simple one-to-many bibliography db: one author, many titles. I am unable to recreate in FileMaker what seemed transparent in MS Access. I created with no problem a layout with a title portal for data entry. I am unable to create a report that includes more than the first title from each author (columnar layout with title sub-summary). I understand from one of the other Forum discussions that portals are not intended for reports. Likewise, if I do a find for any of the title fields, it returns the first title only (although the second or third title holds the searched for information).     I want to be able set up my current database so that when you view a file you don't lock that file. I was thinking that I could have it switch between Preview and Browse. So intially it would take it to the record and be in preview mode and then once clicking on "edit" button would take it in to browse. However... 1. Does previewing a layout mean that a record isn't locked and someone else can edit? 2. Can preview be increase as the preview of A4 isn't big enough for my layout?     I have a layout that sorts cabinet parts by size. These parts are sorted first by crossgrain width. The widest ones should show up at the top of the list. The second sort is by length, from longest to shortest. The list should read: widest, (longest to shortest) next widest (longest to shortest) etc. I have this layout set up to display in TABLE VIEW.     New to FM (only been using for six months)... Is there a way to create/design a Summarized Report (i.e., a report with subtotals or "sections" of information -- WITHOUT including the field that's being used as the Summary delineator? For example, I might have a field named "color" and want to sort the report BY color (in sections)... all the blue ones, then the green ones. Can the report be displayed (on screen or print) without showing "blue" and "green" as the section dividers? FM "compels" you to choose the summary field(s) during the layout wizard -- I just don't want them to be displayed on the output. Any clues are appreciated.

    Am using a modified template from FM solutions and have the following problem. Setting tab order works in the application, but fails when using web sharing. This problem was supposedly fixed in release 7.2, but still occurs after applying the update. Tabbing moves randomly from field to field, not in the order set.

    I hope someone can help me out, I designed a Extended columnar report that is approx. 20 pages long. It is set up like a test. I pasted MS Word text on the left side of the layout and an answer field corresponding each question on the right side of the page. My problem comes when I print the form, the fields do not line up properly with the lines of text on the left. It looks fine in Print Preview, but does not print properly. I even tried pasting the test from NotePad and got the same results. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Steve

    I use the word trashing because it has changed all my files. I opened my original solution in vs. 6 on a new installed copy of FileMaker. All of the fonts on every layout changed. I am out of town and can't access my files at home or at work. Of course, I already switched to Browse - unlike vs. 7, it automatically saved this mess. Does this mean I can't continue the design on it - and globally reassign the fonts when I get home. I use Verdana but this current system doesn't have verdana loaded in FM fonts.   35. I have a field that goes to multiple pages. I run into one of these 2 problems. 1 - First page of data doesn't print, just a blank page. Rest of pages are fine. 2 - All pages print but lines are cut in half and it prints on top of the Header and Footer. I've tried changing sizes of everything, just doesn't work. I think printing from FM is turning into the most difficult task I've had with it.

    Hi Folks, Creating and using portals... I want a portal to do exactly what "Table View" does (don't ask why), so I go into relationship view, pick my table and drag a key field (ID) back onto itself (self-join). Then in layout mode, I assign my layout to use the new table, but refering to the fields in the old table (seems to be the way to get it to work). The portal looks pretty and adds to a feeling of euphoria, but both "Find" and "Sort" seem to do nothing. "Find" returns all records whatever you enter in the fields and "Sort" sorts it exactly as it already is. Any ideas :

  44. For a class-enrollment application, I've got a set of classes that sometimes have multiple teachers and always have multiple students, i.e. two many-to-many relationships with join tables. For some of the reports, I'd like to be able to specify the Find criteria (such as a date-range like yyyy.mm.dd...yyyy.mm.dd) and other selection criteria values at the time I request the report, without having to get into the cumbersome Find Mode screen (which I know can be displayed with a script command).     Hi, I have a columnar/list report containig three fields while field 1 is always only one line, the fields 2 and 3 may contain one to four lines. To save space I would like to use sliding, but i would like the three fields to slide together and assume the hight of the hightest box (the one with the most lines) eg. if the box with the most lines contains three lines all boxes are 3 lines high.   53. I have a form that is filled out via the web in Filemaker. There is a place for 4 separate text comments. Since I never know how long the comments might be, the Filemaker layout has a single text box with MERGE FIELDS (like <<Comment1>>) so the comments flow nicely. The problem is that some users have exceeded the normal length of a comment which resulted in the last comment being cut off in many cases, So, I decided to add a second page to the layout (I just slid the body downward) and made the comment text box longer.     Anyone else notice that the Size box in layout mode list the demensions in the order or Width and Heigth, but the Window scripts to sepcify the demensions are in Heigth/Width. I know this of course.. but it never fials, everytime I go to use the little object size tool to estimate a window size, I get it backwards when I enter it into the script! ..funny how the more powerful and improved an application gets, the more we complain about the little things..

    We are in the process of converting our Excel database of calendar information into a Filemaker database which we share between Mac OS 9 and Windows 98 computers. In Excel, we often pulled reports into Word using mail merge, creating 3 column formats that are easy to distribute to the public and our media and academic contacts.     Lists are great.... However how can I setup a custom list so that from a drop down selection the selection field is shown in the list. I was considering: 1. Global field which has the selection you want 2. An extra calculation field in the list that says if(global field= X,display x, else.....   60. I created a form with different attributes like font, color, etc... for each field. This is good as I can give a particular field a greater prominence over another, which looks great on forms. When I change this form to table view, the resulting table assumes the same attributes for each field as in the form view.   61. yeah.. i've run into this before, so I know that it is something that filemaker doesn't let you do, but I am hoping someone may have a workaround... I want to interact with a global field in a header while in a list view. basically what i want is to have a field at the top of my list view, that the user can type into and hit a "find" button and it will then run a script that does a find. Kind of like a quick find thing. The only problem is, I can't interact with fields in the header, so the user can't type into it... I am using Filmaker 6

    Howdy, I want to show a custom dialog with a message that resides in a table in another DB file. So, I have set up a related ID field in the current table matching the ID in the other file. By setting it to a particular value, I can access particular text. However, problems arise when I move to another layout - I need another related "ID" field in my new current table. AND SO ON, AD INFINITUM. Is there no easy way of getting at fields in tables in other files, without resorting to specifying related fields in the CURRENT TABLE ? ie.     Ok...I have a very weird thing...When I go to layout mode...the background changes to look like 1/2 paper and 1/2 gray...some of my objects are on and some are all off... Looks very funny...but when I try to go make some new objects on the gray area it will not let me? When I try to drag them off the white area it shows my a "do not sign"...     probably a simple answer I hope. I have a list layout with a header and a body. The body list the values that I want but I have the header background as white and the body as a grey. In the contacts listing it gives the whole of the bottom part of the header as grey which is great. But in the company list it only display grey on the individual line of the companies being listed.   65. OK this should be an easy one for someone out there to help me with. FileMaker is cross platform. It's great! It means the guys in our design studio can access all our company records in the main database. I've recently started upgrading our company solution so that macs can use the functions also. But most of my layouts use the windows Tahoma font. Does this display on a mac? I cannot test it at the moment as I am making changes to our database out of office hours, using the remote desktop so I can't fire it up on my mac.     Hi all, looking for a bit of help and was wondering if anyone here could provide some answers! I have a columnar list, and with it I have summaries after several types of sorts. All of these summaries are to appear, and contain (basically) the same information. Obviously, if the sorts have a lot of data to work with, and some distancing appears, then I want to have each of these summaries appear. My problem now is a 'letter' page written to clients that include certain fields from a 'main' overall page. Such as Dear 'John' thank you for your call . . . your quote is 'Quote 1' and the total cost is 'Cost1'. My problem is when I add the field 'client first name' how do I add a comma after his name??     I have a client that needs a patient health record system that has the ability to print out and store their client's health information. One of the problems I have run into is how to setup FM so that it will adhere to their rigid chart template.   71. I have a database of Pages in a photo catalog, and images on each page. I need a report that has the page number in the catalog page number in the title, then the items that will be on that page in the body. I got it mostly done by putting the page value in a sub summary (when sorted by TempPage). The problem is that when there are more records for a page than will fit on one page, the second page does not have the page info at the top of the page. I tried putting page number data in a leading grand summary, but that just puts the page number of the first record at the top of the page and all data below. From the text I import I want a layout with just profile name once where auditors can click on the profile and view new profiles. i thought about using buttons to reference searches however new profiles may show up at anytime.     Hi all: I've got this hideously difficult page-layout problem that I've been working with for quite a while now. The client has one layout for the first page, another for the last page, and a third for any pages that go in between. The body is a list of items, and I'm printing from the file with the data in it. What I've got happening now is that the user can enter preview mode & view a 1-page layout, or a 2-page layout, and see which one works.     Is there a way to set different tab orders inside the same layout??? in a data entry layout I have different "sub-groups" of information (they are sub-groups because I have format it them to look like that, but there are all in the same layout/portal/database), and would like to allows the user to tab from field to fiels in that sub-group??? can anyone help???   81. I am using calc fields as containers to have dynamic buttons. My graphic is made in FM7 (simple figures using the rectangle, circle and line functions). When inserting this graphic into the Repeating container field used as the graphics "bank", my Calc field container displays a warped graphic. I've tweaked the crop, reduce and enlarge functions. I've changed the dimensions of the Calc field container and the repeating "bank" container field, all without help. What am I doing wrong? Thank's in advance.     Can anybody offer a hint or trick for printing 2 (of many) text fields sideways? I use FM to fill in the data on a pre-printed form which has recently been revised to include social security numbers along the left edge in a sideways orientation (so that the numbers run vertically along the edge, "top" to the edge). Only thing I could find in FM Help was for Asian text rotation--not a help. Any suggestions? I don't need to print this form very often, so even a clunky workaround would be welcome.

    How do I set up a layout so that I can enter multiple records on one screen. I have a database where we enter sample records based on common data such as customer, address, date etc. Samples are submitted in batches of 10 so I need to be able to enter all the records on one page. The Customer Name etc fields will be common to all the records so as opposed to entering all the records on a seperate screen by creating a new record for each I would prefer for ease of entry to enter them all on the same screen. Each batch of 10 record entries can then be given a specific key field common to all the records on that entry for ease of lookup later when we come writing…

    I'm assuming these aren't possible. Say I have one layout with certain content, then I have a script go to the next layout. If I set the background colour of the second layout to transparent, presumably it just shows a white background, and not the contents of the previous layout. Is that a feature in filemaker 7? I'm assuming there aren't any plugins to change this as the FileMaker layout system seems a pretty integrated and hardcore aspect of filemaker. Is it possible? Just to save copying a section of layout objects into 20 other layouts every time I make a change. Thanks

    How can you show a field in a layout that comes from another unrelated database. I have a file with 5 tables, 3 of which have relational links to each other and 2 which are stand alone. When building a layout on one of the related tables I am allowed to add a field from on of the unrelatied stand alone tables. However, in browse mode the field says '<Unrelated Table>'. Why do they give you the option to add unrelated table fields but not show the data from them. I was under the impression that there had to be a related link to a table before you could view it's data (and add it's fields to your layout). Any ideas??

These records/words are then sorted and a count of the occurrences of each word is shown by a subsummary.   95. Hello everyone. Little problem I'm having at the moment. I'm trying to 'lock down' a solution I've made by removing the status area. I have proper navigation within the solution. Whenever I remove the status area, the text I have within the header area gets.. 'changed'? It appears with the upper half of the text removed. If I put the status area back, the problem disappears. This happens to the text regardless of positioning within the header, regardless of header size. Can anyone shed any light on this? Is this a bug within FM7? (We are a publishing company and we use FM to handle invoicing, ad tracking, proofing, collections, etc).     FM breaks the object sliding capabilities found in earlier versions. If you have fields that span multiple pages (such a descriptive text fields) you could set the height of the fields to be say 3" each then place them on a layout (some of mine went 6 pages) then set the objects to slide up with "reduce the size of the enclosing part" set on so if the user did not write much in a field it would shrink: most of my pages when they printed would be 1 page long... occasionally 2 pages very occasionally 3 pages. In FM7 these pages print only the fields that appear on each page
