A report in Preview mode shows different results on 2 different computers, one running WinXP, the other Win2000. The correct results are on the WinXP. Both computers are running FMP 6 Dev. To compound the problem, they both show the correct results in Browse mode. Any clue as to what's going on?

Does anyone out there know if I can transfer a FileMaker Pro 8 layout to a FileMaker Pro 6 file? I've tried copy and pasting, and although it worked, it converted my layout elements drawn using the FileMaker tools into an image. Im trying to retain the FileMaker elements as they were created. I have both a PC and Mac and both platforms produce the same results. Many thanks

I created a filtered VL showing Customer ID (1st field) and customer name (2nd field). My VL filters only if I choose "sort by first field" (eg customID) in the define VL window. If I choose "sort by second field" (eg name), the VL is not filtered. Any idea how to sort a filtered VL by second field? Thks

My database is a job log of graphics work. I want to display an overview via a self-join relationship in a portal. The match field is complex, a calculation field with the form: abc where a is an autoentered value which the user can update (it flags up when a job is completed and can be archived) b is a calculation based on whether the start date is < get (CurrentDate). c is a required entry from the user when they create the record (it puts jobs into a category 1-4 dependent on type, eg. flyer, leaflet etc) I have the relationship set up such that the self join is between the dynamic abc value, and a global abc (eg. abc=global_123). I migrated a FMP 4 file to FMP 8. The original file has many layouts, which we are working on triming down, however, the first time I opened the file, the scroll control for the layouts had a nice new twist. When you were at the "First" layout, you could scroll UP to the "Last" layout, a very nice shortcut when you have hundreds(!) of layouts. However, after the first opening the scrolling function returned to the original, which requires scrolling through the long list to get to the bottom. We are working on reorganizing the layouts, deleting some, and just not showing all of them in the list, but if I could restore that circular scrolling, it would be a big …

I am trying to put togather a simple Invoiceing system which i have managed to do up to a point. I have an Invoice header table that contains the invoice numbers, date and client details, i then have an invoice line table that stores the indivudual lines of the invoice. I now want to print the invoice, meaning that i want a report that will print the header and then each line that is linked to that header but i can not figuer out how to do it. can any one help me ?

I'm working with a expense report layout, that is using tabs to show a weeks worth of days for "mileage tracking purpose" 2 fields (StartMileage & EndMileage)..... I want to auto enter last EndMileage field (contents) into the next StartMileage field. the problem is 1 week is one record ( so I can't lookup from record to record)& mileage is not recorded for every day. Also to switch from one day to the next dosent require a button or new record, because each week is all 1 record, then the following week is a new record. In a data entry form is there an easy way to create drop-down options that may, or may not, offer secondary options and even offer third options. I want to create the tools for the user to construct his own mail templates. So here is the deal: I would have a layout with a large main text field on the right side of the page, and on the left side I want to have common pieces of text and relevant fields (tags) that the user can insert into the main text with the click of a button next to the tag. The button(s) will trigger a scripts that will insert the text (or field) where the cursor is in the main text. Ok let me ask this one to try to solve my problem. Can you put a button on a Tab,(I mean right on top of the tab), attach a script to that button and have it run the script when you click on the tab? I have tried but it only switches to that tab layout, but dosen't run the script. Any suggestions?

I have created a database with 7 different tables: A main table that handles all the data input and 6 related tables that allow me to see different views of the data in 6 different layouts. I would like to create one tabbed layout with seven different tabs, where each tab calls up a different table . . . but the layout that contains the tabs only references one table. How do I get each tab to show a reference to a different table? Right now, I have 6 layouts, each with it's own different portal, but I'd like to be able to have one layout with six (actually 7) tabs that do basically the same thing.

Greetings! One of my value lists is supplying me with the following message when I attempt to make a new entry: "The length of the selected text (the application automatically highlights the entire list) cannot exceed 30000 characters;" consequently, I'm stumped. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a global parameter for all value lists (If so, it appears to me to be restrictive for a database program). Presuming I understand what happened here, is there some way to format the list to confirm and/or expand its parameters? Regards, Scottish

Hi guys, (I'm using Developer 7) I've done a search already, and although I found solutions to change the color of a field through calculation or script, what would you do if you had, say, 100 fields that needed this done ? That's a lot of calculation fields, or a high maintenance (and not to mention large/slow script). I was thinking of doing something with a portal, displaying a background based on the field value, but I can't figure out how I'd do that with multiple fields... I working on a database to automate our scholarship notification to students. I have it just about done, and want to be able to create a button that looks at the information I've given, and takes me to the CORRECT individualized letter I've created (with data for that need). New to FiIemaker so please be gentle. I have as an example a Car database with two fields one is called "Manufacturer" eg Ford, Porsche, etc and the second field is called "Model". ... righto im having a small problem... most of my front end value lists are just custom defined static lists and seeing as i figure ill never have to clone my front end, thats not really a problem... the problem is my backend which has pretty much duplicate value lists for the purpose of validation... these however are all dynamic set by field... now the problem ive been having for some strange reason is that while the values in the backend are duplicates, i cant use validate as a member of value list... sigh here is an example... front end yes / no value list... back end... dynamic yes / no list used for validation of front end field... i get an error in the front…

Is it possible to have a portal within a portal? Heres a basic idea: You have authors who write articles that are put into journals. Each journal has multiple articles. Each article has one or more authors. I want to have a layout using the journal table. On this layout I want a portal showing details of each article in the journal. Within the portal row for each article I want a portal (or some way) of showing the author(S) for the article. OK, I have a regular field with a pop up list that gets its value list from a relationship with another table. What I need to find a way to do is, in the other table (table 2), along with the name of the records there is another field titled "point value". In the point value field there is just a number. In the first table (table 1) there is the field with the pop up list and another field titled "points". What I want to do is, when I select a record from the pop up field in table 1, I want the corresponding value from the "point value" field in table 2 to show up in the points field. Although a relative neophyte to FileMaker (haven't used the application for years), in other databases (based on FileMaker such as in AppleWorks and old Apple versions of FM), I was easily able to insert a "check box" in my layout (one of the fields). The blank check box could easily be checked to indicate that a certain action or condition had been met or left blank to indicate "no", etc. However, I cannot determine how to do this in FileMaker Pro 8. Hi I'm new at FM and I'm blocked again. I didn't find a solution so far, regardless what I tried. And after searching fmForums 3 days, I thought I'll give it a try. May be it's very simple and I'm just looking too far? I have a Value List filled with different Items (in my file called "Kostenstellen"). My idea is to have now on the "Matrix"-Tab a Summary, where it pulls out all Items from the Value List once and shows also on the left side the total of the Costs (total from "AUS Zahlenwert"). Having 3 problems with a portal in an invoice situation. It wont show the related records when I tab out of the product ID field unless I click into the window, or the record has been committed by hitting the enter key. Despite enabling the vertical scroll bar checkbox, no scroll bar appears. Despite setting the number of rows at 5, only 1 row appears, so I can only enter 1 product record. I'm obviously missing something here. If anyone can help Id be very grateful. File attached. Go to sales from the main menu

Hi, please try downloading the file. Add an item to the todo... works fine, right? Empties out of the entry field and goes down into the portal list. Now, go into define database and add a new text field to the ToDo table, called anything. Now try adding a new record to the todo list. Doesn't work, right? What the heck is going on? I want to select 1 of the records from my Projects portal and then I have 2 more portals; 1 for ideas and the other for progress. Then I want to show the many ideas in the Ideas portal and the many progresses in the Progress portal that relates to the project that I selected in the first portal. All 3 of these portals are TO's from my Projects table which is the layout's table. Ideas???

Hi I have a portal for a "Session Notes" table in a "Client Details" layout (based on a "Client Details" table). The portal displays multiple notes on each client record. The "Session Notes" table is related to the "Client Details" table by a "Client ID" field. What I want to do is print out all the session notes displayed in the portal for the current client record via a "Session Note" report. The report is launch by a button on the client layout. I'm guessing I'll need a script with go to layout "Session Note Report" and do a find using the current client ID, but I lack the knowledge to do this.

I have a database with a layout that has 2 portals. We will call this db A, with related db B (portal and db C (portal C). I am trying to create records in portal C from data in portal B. Here is the script I have. I can get one record to be created correctly but can not get past that first one. I have a button for each record in portal B that performs: Go to Portal Row [select, "db C::field A"] Set Field ["db C::field B", db B::field B"] ...and there are a few other set field lines. I am developing an invoice history file for my company. Invoices range from 1996 -2005. I have created tables for each year (both for header and related line items ). What I want to do is use a user interface with two portals (header and line items). I want to enter a year and customer number on that page and have the correct year and related invoices appear in the portals below. One of my layouts must have gotten corrupted somehow; all of the fields and images/text I had on it no longer show up. In fact, nothing shows up on this layout, and the layout name is blank on the left hand side of the FMPro window. I've created a new layout from scratch without any difficulty, but can't do anything with this old layout. Clicking "Layout Setup" does nothing, and I can't add any parts, fields, etc., and hitting Ctrl-E does nothing. Does anyone have any idea how to delete this layout?

I have a database that has tables named Company for Location, Contact, and Location. Each table has its own serial ID field (CompID, ContactID, and LocID respectively). The company table contains the company name. That gets related to the location table to match an address with a company (via CompID). The Location table is related to the Contact table via LocID. I have a contact table with names that I wish to associate with a company. Since a company may have more than one physical address, I want to be able to choose from the multiple addresses associated with a company. This is where I am having a problem. Help! I've spent the better part of the day trying to solve this problem: I'm trying to print merged labels in FMP6. I selected the type of labels I wanted to use. I told it to print the labels in 3 columns across. When I preview or try to print, I only get the first label on each page. It isn't printing one label per page, but ONLY the first label of each page, skipping the 29 labels in between, although they are there in the database. I'm sure it is a setting problem that I've made, but I can't find it. Would appreciate any suggestions.

I cannot delete any records in one of my files. I have two files set to relate via an ID field. The relationship allows deletion of either record if the other is deleted, yet they won't delete. Via script or menu bar, I get the message if I still want to delete and of course I choose to delete. Yet nothing deletes. Account prefs are for administrator so allows deletion. What am I missing? Thanks. PS The solution structure is: GUI file with one record and tons of globals that I use as match fields to bring in the related tables from other files and tables. The Data file has the data. [edit: I checked to see if duplicating the layout and then making changes would work, and it does, so it appears that it's possible to have a corrupt layout? Is this a common problem in FMP 8?] I just lost an entire day's worth of work due to a bug in FMPro 8, and I can't figure out what's going on. I've converted several files from fm5 to fm7. I'm now putting all the files into one file and relating the tables. No problem. The problem is some of those files have a very large number of layouts that are mostly custom reports and other things that the client prints out all the time. How in the world am I going to escape the slow tedium of recreating each layout in the new solution file??

Is there a way to only enable certain fields to be entered under certain conditions? For instance, if I have a field specified as a pull-down list with options 1, 2, and 3. And I only want certain other fields to be able to be edited when option 1 is chosen. Then other fields can only be edited when option 2 is chosen. Etc. Thanks.

I need to allow the user in a runtime solution to create their own list of values for a checkbox field. The runtime version does not allow access to the Values Lists menu item and I can't configure checkbox fields with an "edit" option. How can I do this? Is there a script step that will bypass the limitation in runtime to allow the user to edit the value list of a checkbox field? I tried to create a global field for the user to input values to be used to generate the value list but it doesn't work because the global field can not be indexed. Anyone know a work around? I have a layout that is supposed to group sales for the day by agent and prvide the total sales each agent did for that day. When I run the layout I do not get the agent name to print out and the total is the grand total not the sub total for the agent. I would like to have a few custom menu items that will save my previous searches and also a better menu to get to different layouts. The literature for CNS says they can do this effectively, but, they have no questions or answers on their FAQs page which makes me believe there are not too many people using this plug-in. This is really dumb, but I can't find a simple solution... I have a client that receives orders on the internet. She cuts names, addresses, etc, and pastes them into the appropriate FM field. Frequently the data is in a larger size font, or an odd color. She wants the data to convert to the font, size and color of the appropriate field. Is there a way to do this other than a complicated script that will reformat the text in each field?

one field contains lengthy text and is formatted to scroll. a second field is a repeating field that contains keywords that I input based on information from the first field and is the related field for a portal from another database. is there a formatting step that would allow me to freeze the first field as I edit the second field so that the first field does not return to the beginning of the text? If not, are there suggestions for other ways to solve this ... I am considering creating a new window containing only the second field, but don't know if that's the best solution. Thanks.

Using the new FM8 tabbed interface, there appears to be a problem using the go to portal row script step. Scenario: A multi tab layout with a different portal on each tab. If a Go To Portal Row(by calculation) script step is executed when the current tab is anything other than the first tab, the command always puts you in the portal on the first tab. ARG! i cant seem to get this script to work correctly. I have a solution which includes a layout. Essentially what it is A master order layout with a protal into production orders. Each production order ads an 01..02 ext sequential number to the master order. thus a master order of 1234 becomes 123401 and then 123402 as you add more production runs of that same order. In the begining i was having problems with users not commiting the record becuase they were tabbing through the layout. So i added a script that commits the record when you click on a field and then takes you back to that field..however in the portal it will always take you to the first occurance …

What if I want to exclude multiple records from a report? I know I have to attach it to a button. I want to exclude records that have the project status as finished. However, I have a container field that corresponds with the project status field. For example, when the field says "finished" the container field becomes gray. So, how can I exclude the container field color gray and the project status "finished" from my report? Sorry, it was a long question.

I want to exclude records from a portal based on a radio button in the original record. Without having to set up a seperate relationship, just like I would use a "constrain found set" in a report script Is there an easy way to do this? In more detail.... I book radio presenters into editorial sessions, using a join record that takes PresenterID and SessionID joining them together with a in a new record with a time. Filtering these records with SessionID and sorting them by booking time, produces a shcedule. If a have a value list that shows the related contacts to a company and I want to use it in another file why cant I create a value list in the other file using the value list from another file option to bring it over? I guess one way to do it would be to create a calculation field in the customer file that has the value list based off the relationship but is there any other way? What is the preferred solution for printing after going through so much effort to create a good portal? Thanks to the advice on this forum, I have created a marvelous filtering portal based on several criteria and am preparing to implement portal sorting with three sort parameters (“based on kitchen sink too” - David Kachel). Great! But now I need a printing scheme. Portals are “not supposed to be” used for printing but I went to so much trouble to create my portal! Hi- I have something I am using to Invoice Match to Purchase Orders. I have given the user the option of referencing multiple Invoice Numbers for each PO. This is a repeating field labeled "Invoice #", and next to each line item I have "Invoice Referenced" which should reference a value list of all the Invoice #'s entered for this particular order. So I made the value list set by the field "Invoice #". However when I do this it is pulling up all invoice numbers throughout every record in the database. I know that you can restrict modification of a field value based upon the user's privileges. However, can you prevent the user from even clicking into a field that they don't have access to modify? So, if the user only has 'view' access to a field, I don't want them to even be able to to enter into the field. They way I think FileMaker works is that FileMaker will allow access into the field, yet if they try to modify it, they will receive an error. I don't want them to even be able to click into the field if they don't have access rights. Other users will have higher levels of access and should be able to click into the field and modify it.

Sorry if this has been asked before, we are having a problem with FM8 that we did not used to have with FM6 We have a number of scripts that we use to insert common paragraphs into quotations that we send to our clients. The field for the quote is almost A4 in size. Normally the user will type in specific unique info for the first part of the quote and then choose a script to add the common paragraphs like delivery times, terms etc. In FM6 we could run the script and the text would word wrap if it was longer than 1 line. In FM8 we are finding that instead of word wrapping, the word at the end of a line will split, resulting in the first part of the word on 1 line…

Hello: I have a customer layout based on customer table with a portal based on invoice table that shows invoices for each customer. Question: How can I filter the portal to show invoices with balance different than zero? Currently the portal shows all invoices; invoices with a balance and invoices with 0.00 balance. I want to hide invoices with 0.00 balance. I tried a number of things but nothing has worked so far. I am stuck, any idea will be highly appreciated.

I am fairly new to all of this, but I have a real good start on a FileMaker solution that I have designed to keep track of individual sales reps in our company. I am having a problem getting any reporting to work, mainly because I'm not sure how to do it. Here is the short of it - I have several value lists set up where I can select from a main screen which sales rep - what the product is - and the result of the sales call. Can I combine the data from portal rows to fill one ordinary field? I have two tables linked by a one-to-many relationship. Records in the one table show related records from the other in a portal. Ideally I want to export the records from the one table with a new field combining the data from the relevant portal rows. I am having great difficulty in getting a summary of a field in a portal. I have acres in a portal, the use types in the number for each type of crop in this portal. There is a field outside the portal that sums up all the acres. When I type in the acres it won't display the sum, but when I leave the layout and come back the sum is displayed. Also when I change a number for acres and click outside the portal then the updated sum is displayed, but when I tab out of that field to the next in the portal the summary field goes blank again. I am stuck - I just want to let FM rename a pdf-file via a send event script with a calculated cmd-string but can't figure out how to tell win2k that this cmd should rename the file in a special folder eg "cmd /c move /y c:Documents and SettingsAll UsersDocumentsprinted.pdf c:Documents and SettingsAll UsersDocumentsVariableRcdID.pdf" This does not work at all but: If this command is done on root level renaming works: "cmd /c move /y c:printed.pdf c:VariableRcdID.pdf" So it has something to do with the path names in the cmd-string - how do I force and tell the cmd to use the right folder locations?? I have a file which shows 2 portals, Portal A and Portal B (3 files in total) and I want to be able to give 2 buttons to act as the Page Down and Page Up keys for Portal B so that I can scroll down to select a record to be transferred into Portal A. The portal rows in Portal B show related records based on a parent key in the main file. I want to show 10 lines in Portal B so that when the user clicks on the Page Down button the portal shows records 11-20, 21-30, etc. It must also stay showing the last portal row irrespective of the number of portal rows on the "last page". Similarly a Page Up button would work in the opposite direction. Can anyone help?

I have a crosstab-type report consisting only of summary and sub-summary fields. Hi all, I am a new member to the forums and this is my first post so here goes. I have been using filemaker 6 for a month or two in an office enviroment on a Mac platform and now have the need for custom menu's. Idealy I would like to remove/disable the "duplicate record" command in the Records menu. I see in the "access privilages" I can disable "Delete records", "Create records" and so on but no "Duplicate record"! I also tried changing the "Available menu commands" section to "editing only" but this does not have the desired affect. Hi ! I have a problems with fields that don't disappear like similar other fields when they should. Please see attachement... There is 15 portals which each shows information of their relasionships. In blue boxes there is "callsigns" (A1, A2, etc). When there is something to show the callsigns appear in portals. The order of callsigns can be changed. If I remove whole callsign, in some portals all information disappears as it should. But there are some portals where empty blue box still remains. It works perfectly in other portals. Okay, I'm still fairly new to Filemaker, and I can't seem to get around this annoying behavior in my layouts. Whenever a user clicks into any field to enter data, every single field on the layout becomes "highlighted." I put the term in quotes because it's not *exactly* highlighted, but the little dotted lines appear around all the fields. This doesn't interfere with the functionality of the db, but it annoys the heck out of me. Anybody know how to prevent this?
