Correct me if I'm wrong, but as they stand now it's not possible to use Spelling script steps effectively within loops or for non-interactive use. I request that the Spelling script steps be expanded so that they can run unattended, for example to allow a batch of records (either fields within record or entire record) to be spell-checked without user intervention, and flagged on a per-record basis for later review. Along similar lines, it'd be nice to have a clean-up script that uses a custom dictionary to go through a set of records and fix commonly-misspelled terms, for example certain proprietary names, names of chemicals, etc. Without getting too specif…

(Semi-rant) I find the development environment of FileMaker very linear - and it's not the way some people (including myself) work. I'm restricted to editing(and sometimes looking at) one thing at a time, with a large click-path required to get from one place to another. For example, if I'm editing a Custom Function, I have to relinquish control of the Data Viewer with a click route of 1 to test any changes, and 4 to get back to my function. I value my physical health and like to type and use the mouse without a searing pain down my arm - the ability to map shortcuts to any menu item and have multiple instances of and/or non-modal editor windows would be welcome…

In FileMaker 8 Tabs where introduced with very poor support for navigation. We now know that this was because objects was not far behind. So that got me thinking is there anything new in 8.5 that has no obvious application yet. 1. Window height and width resizing on the fly. 2. Gathering info on objects contained within other objects. I think this may point to the possibility that version 9 will finally include objects resizing on the fly to the size of the window they are in... this would also make the object namer very well placed on the object info window (with the dimensions) What do you think? Anything else you think points to the future?

You know what would really help... the simple things... Like color coding the calculations, i.e. to show which open bracket relates to which close bracket, or which function relates to what set of brackets and expressions (like what excel does when your entering the calc). .. and then also proper formatting, i.e. with a case statement embedded in a let statement... should indent... but it doesn't, sigh. e.g. [color:red]Let([x = y]; .....[color:green]Case( [color:purple](x = "y" or p=z[color:purple]) and f=0 ; "z" ; p [color:green]) [color:red]) The simple things would be nice, and useful (but switchable on and off).

Even though visualising relationships is a [color:blue]good thing, the way it's implemented is (very) poor (in my opinion). Not at all user-friendly for bigger databases. It's messy, the notes added to 8 are not really helpfull, they just take up more space. What I suggest: 1) A text view of the relationships in a list. Similar to the 'add relationship' button but then to look for a relationship. With the possibility to edit or delete a specific relationship while browsing this list. Oh, that would be sooooo helpfull instead of trying to find a relationship among all tables. 2) The possibility to create several relationship 'layouts' that you can n…

I have been loving FM Server's ability to apply database changes while the file is being shared. I'm a lazy administrator so I love being able to do stuff during regular hours. However, invariably I have a user that has a record locked. No biggie you think, just wait a few minutes and they'll move on. Not in my case, we have people that have it open and a record locked but then they minimize FileMaker or walk away to a meeting. No manner of notification or messages are going to work. It would be really nice to somehow tie in the disconnect to the "Waiting to Commit Changes" bit.

However, I find that at least with my current knowledge I end up with a lot of very short and simple scripts. For example changing a layout and then just setting a global variable. I think it would be nice to be able to tag at least two or three steps to a button. Almost like a small version of scriptmaker built into the button setup dialog. You would obviously have to repeat some of the scripts, but it would drastically cut down on the number of scripts, and having to think of naming conventions for all of them. What do you think??

This really needs to be addressed. Coming from a Server Advanced perspective, record creation is extremely slow. (Like around 20-30 records per second) on our xServe clusternode / xRAID configuration. The unusual thing is that if you setup your records as a text file, then import it from a filemaker client application, we get performance of almost 1,000 records per second. BUT, with Server Advanced 8 there is no web context for importing files, like there was under FM Pro Unlimited. Why does individual record creation take so long? Layton

It would be great if: 1) you could get the ID for an individual field or layout the way you can for a record, not just a list of all of them. 2) you could navigate to a layout or field based on its ID rather than its name or a number that refers to its position. Please, oh please FileMaker ... increase the number of letters when defining boolean to text (through field format number options). 7 letters? Not only would it help if this were increased - you wouldn't believe how many more calcs I could convert - but it would be nice if this popped up a calculaton box as well. After all, even Tool Tips allows calcs on them. LaRetta :wink2:

As it stands FM8's new Auto Complete only works on value lists that contain only one field. If you have a value lists that uses a second field you cannot use this feature. I find this rather unfortunate because in my opinion auto complete is most useful when you are dealing with very large value lists. These large value lists are the ones that most often represent an object from another table (ex. list of authors). In these cases I am constantly using a numerical ID to relate the tables and only show the textual data (ex. author's name) in the value list and layout. Bryan

It would be very useful if some script steps could be set to execute in the context of the server, not the client. In particular, I'm thinking about script steps such as: Send Email Save as PDF Import/Export DoAppleScript Shell Script It would be even more useful if FMServer could schedule a FileMaker script to execute on a schedule. With these two features, it would be possible to have a server setup be a lot more powerful, e.g. a script could be run on the server every night to print a bunch of reports to PDFS, and move them to a webserver directory. Or, a user could trigger an action which would send an email, from the server's email a…

The ability to have value lists show display one field while storing the value of another is a huge improvement. However, it still in my opinion lacks the functionality needed to be fully useful. I’ve always been of the mind that no key should ever be seen by any user, and that users should never be allowed to type in any value that will be used to form a relationship. Drop down lists that use value lists with the second field option should display values from the second field once a selection has been made. You should also be able to limit the selection to values in the list (without having to use field validation). In other words that should function more like HTML…

I think it would be pretty handy to be able to make an entry directly to the Windows Event Log (application tab) from within Filemaker. I realize the the Filemaker application by itself is capable of this but I think it could be useful if us as FM developers could log events concerning the applications that we have developed too. I don't know if there is a Mac equivalent. I assume so. Maybe this is already possible on Macs. This could probably be done today if one used VBScript but that is a lot more horsing around than I normally want to do.

I know this is really out there, but I would love to have the ability to have FileMaker connect in with Active Directory for use as a clients table. It's a pain to have to maintain a clients table in FileMaker when all the clients that are in this table are already in an Active Directory OU.

Developer selects which merge fields are available and user selects from a list by double clicking. It should be able to handle overspill of information into following pages just like a normal word processor and the doc saved for later use.

The consensus in the container forum is that if a container is filled by reference or via a calculation the file (and resulting path) must be in a directory that is shared and mapped/mounted on every client machine. What this says to me is that the client is responsible for fetching and displaying the file; not the server. That explains why you need it mapped/mounted locally and why we need to concern ourselves with the client's OS when calculating the path. If the above is all true then I would want/wish that the server could resolve, fetch, and display containers (paths) filled by reference or via scripts. This would solve the issue where those …

I would like to have non-ugly popup menu's please. Whats up with the shadows? They make my otherwise clean layouts look messy and i have to revert to using pop-up lists with restrictions on validation... It's a pain! Extra inbuilt onEvent support would be extremely useful aswell . Finally just a bit of whinge here, but why is ther e no such thing as FM Lite? A cheaper version of filemaker that can only run FM solutions, not requiring the ability to edit layouts / scripts / tables etc. I mean really...I feel im being ripped off, though my users feel the full force here, my point stands.. why are they paying for features they'll never use? ~Genx

I developed my new Web site, www.transpowercorp.com, using FileMaker Developer 7. It's being hosted on FileMaker 8 Server using IWP. Some notes: 1. Version 7 doesn't display scroll bars properly in IWP, whereas version 8 does. There should be a patch created for this problem in 7. 2. Version 7 does correctly enter the database when Guest is enabled, has IWP permissions, and is set in File Options. Version 8 does not do so. This needs to be corrected pronto! It's unfair for a Web surfer to have to login (or choose Guest) to enter a public site hosted through IWP. 3. Neither version correctly exits IWP upon execution of the script step Exit Applicati…

I personally am quite impressed with what FMI has done with IWP. I've always wanted the ability to access and display dynamic info from my db's via a browser w/o middleware. To me the biggest limitation is the lack of email capabilities w/ IWP and basically one pretty limited script step (open URL) to access CWP functionality. I really hope a developer comes up w/ a FMSA plug-in soon, or FMI does so that enables full funtioning emailing to be performed via IWP. I read how Microsoft is changing their biz model to be more web based (ala Google) as opposed to application based, as it allows Msoft to be more nimble in their development of software. I think FMI can learn somet…

One of the many things I would love to see in FM is the ability to sort a portal right at the portal level, not via monkeying with my relationships. As it stands, filtering portals in 1-M or M-M relationships involves adding fields and/or calculations. This simply ends up in larger databases with more calculating to do (ie: bloat). Maybe I'm just being a purist here, but I like to relate my tables and then have the freedom to easily format and filter the results as I please as in any SQL based RDBMS. There are tons of posts on here related to portal filtering so it is certainly a highly demanded functionality. However the process is usually so complicated that …

  96. I bought FM 8 Advanced, and I bought the English version, although I am Dutch, and have a Dutch OSX. I want FM to be in English as I am used to the English commands, script steps and all that and the 'world of information' on the web around FM is in English. (Also my manual on paper is english...) After installing, FM8 showed up in English, as I recall, but after running the updater to version 8.0.v2, FM8 showed up in Dutch. I talked to Filemaker and the 'solution' they offer, which works, is to change the system language, and log out and in again. This indeed gives me an english filemaker, but also an english system... So my wish is to be able to change FM langua…

I would like all static references for things to be lifted. Such as SET FIELD, instead of a "specify" button to specify and choose from a static list of tables/fields I would like the standard define field calculation box where we can specify by various methods which field to set. This would also be good for Variables right now you have to declare the variable name instead allow us to provide our own calculation to do so. I realize you can use the actual value part and a Let statement to do the same thing but it would be much simpler to use the entry box for the variable name it's own calculation apart from the calculation use to declare the variable. I can se…

It would be great to be able to selectively set certain fields on each layout to display the misspelled word indicator (little red dots under the word, Mac). This way, on one layout, if the user needs to see this then I can turn it on, but for other layouts or fields it can be turned off. In other words set spell check based on fields and layouts, not a file. While I am talking about spelling, it would be wonderful to select a centralized spelling dictionary on a server. So all hosted files could use and add to the same dictionary. It could be a FM file on FMServer.

Isn't it an idea for Filemaker to make an Explorer-plugin, which is using FMNET to connect to servers, so the Web application is exact the same as the FMPro version? And the plugin has to be for free, so many users can take advantage of the possibilities of FM? Maybe a profit modell for FM, by taking the profits of the (special) server version? So there would be no difference any more between FM Pro and IWP? Using FMNET over the internet is very satisfying for us, so there would be no problem to upgrade this kind of solution!
