Filemaker 8 seems to have some interesting new gizmos. I am hoping someone can answer a few questions about its compatibility with Filemaker 7. 1) Will FM server 7 host databases written with FM Developer 8? 2) Will client stations that are licensed under FM 7 be able to open & interact with files generated by FM Developer 8? Can the data flow from FM8 to FM7? The stuff that intrigues me is the exporting to excel, PDF printing and the concept of tabbed layouts. When I attempt to launch FMP 6.0v1 on a Mac G4 now running OS X 10.4 (Tiger) (this also happened with OS X 10.3), I get the splash screen, then within 2 seconds, the application spontaneously quits. This happens whether I launch the application alone, or by double-clicking a database file. There are no other copies running on my home network when I launch it. I have also repaired permissions on the hard disk before launching. The last thing I did was to reinstall filemaker, then try to launch. Our server was accidently shut down improperly a couple of weeks ago. I have recovered the damaged files, however there is one database file which wants to open however... i just get the spinning wheel of death and nothing happens to the point that i have to forcequit FMpro5.5. Max G5 OSx 3.3 FMPro 5.5/Server 5.5 The file was working fine before the crash and backed up versions of the same file are acting the same way.

Does anyone have any info in "Dynamic Document Creation"? I am trying to do something where we have a image of a sign and whatever the user types into a filemaker field will show up on the sign. They can also specify letter size and letter color and letter style and it will "update" the image as they make their selections. Can this be done in filemaker? -Tom

Help. I am using FMP 7.0 v3. I have a database with several tables. When I attempt to delete a single record in one table, FM deletes all records from that table. Performing the same operation on other tables within the database, only the highlighted record is deleted. The issue is teh same whether the records are sorted or all records are showing. Baffled why the impact is only one one table and how to fix this problem so I can properly delete appropriately selected records?

Has anyone come across any FileMaker Pro based online discussion boards or forums? There's a group at work that would like to implement something along these lines, and our IS Manager is very hesitant to introduce any new software, such as SMF, Slash, or PNphpBB2. The group that wants this functionality wants to basically use for keeping various teams informed as to projects statuses, schedule, etc. So, anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

I was looking for a bit of advice...is there a point when it is better to have seperate files instead of more tables. What I mean is...is it better to have one file with 50 tables or 5 files with 10 tables each? I have a fairly large db (300000 records) I am rebuilding.

Just a quick question guys, how reliable does filemaker become as the physical size of the database is increased. The reason i ask is this: Im making a database involving the storage of pictures for deployment on server, but while i would like to store references the d*** head network guys tell me i can't map network drives off two of the person(s) computers (and so im assuming the referenced files cant be accessed). Over time this database will become increasingly large, and the pictures will take up a lot of room. So yeah i ended up with 3 questions: a) am i missing something in terms of how the reference files are accessed by the client machine? …

I'm painfully new to scripting in FileMaker and need help. I'm trying to help with a payroll project for instructors of our independent study courses. I didn't close my file properly (slap wrist!) and so it got damaged. The problem is, I can't recover it. The dialogue box prompts to name the recovered file and then when I Save, recovery stops. I can see the recovery process flash for a second and then it just stops. I'm wondering if this is related to a disk space error message (http://www.fmforums.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=26;t=001633) I was getting last week. There is plenty of disk space. Is it possible to run Server 5 and Pro 5.5 on same box without causing problems? This is a dedicated FM server machine, (Win2k Server). Hi folks, We're having this weird issue where a person will have a copy of FileMaker Pro 7 on their machine complain about licensing, even when no others are running (we DO have a few identical licensed copies installed that are not volume licensing, but we are planning on getting a volume licensing--this is just for prelim testing. I'm finishing up an app that will be turned into a runtime program and while trying to hide the status area, etc. I can't get into layout mode anymore. I created a script to run at startup (by selecting it with File/Options) called , 'Startup' which does the following ... Close Window [current window] Show/Hide Status Area [Lock; Hide] etc. It flashes something for a split second, then appears that the database is closed (I can't go to Scriptmaker, Layout Mode, etc.) I suspect the Close Window statement is causing it, but can't seemed to find a way around this. I don't know where to post this so I thought I would start here. I have a bunch of FM7 files in my trash, and when I try to empty the trash I get an error message that says: "The operation cannot be completed because the item FMStrs.dls is Locked". I just moved from FMP 5 to 7 and have encountered some bugs. Are these normal? One thing: In one layout I put text in a field and realized that I wanted that text in different field found in a different layout. when I went to the desired layout and field, when I tried to copy the text and paste it, the text came through incorrectly. It copy totally different text from a another field totally unrelated. That's one problem. The second problem that I have encountered is that I just tried to export some records. I recently created a v7 file for a client with several tables - Inventory, Clients, Invoices, etc. They've spent time inputting all the data for the Inventory (their most important table). Two days ago while using the file, FM Unexpecttedly Quit on them. Now, all the data (except for one record) is apparently gone - so it seems. When the file opens it shows 447 records in the Inventory. However, all but one record appear to be empty. All of the "blank" records lock me out from selecting any fields - as if they were locked. Let's assume an ordering database for t-shirts, sweatshirts and other "wearables." The "ordered items" table includes a Product_ID field, as well as fields for multiple garment sizes (small, medium, large, and so on). For eample, let's assume there are three line items. The first shows an order for 20 small sizes of Product A. The second shows an order for 10 medium sizes of Product A. And the third shows an order for 10 medium sizes of Product B. I'm not sure if there's a script for this, or if there's a better forum to post in, but here's my problem: When creating a new record for a project, an estimate needs to be generated as well. the 'project' and 'estimate' are two different layouts of the same database which share a serial number and client code. We have a script (and a button) that will generate a 'projcet' and 'estimate' at the same time when it is run, but the problem is people are hitting 'command + N' to create a new record. Using the Inventory template that comes with FMP7, what I want to do is this: When the user selects an Asset and hits the "check out" button, they are brought to a list view of the Contacts. From here they normally scroll down the list and click to select the appropriate contact. This Contact ID is then added to the History file in the Assets database. Nice, straightforward, it already works. The Contacts at my university all have student ID cards, and I have a card reader which will enter their unique Contact ID when swiped. I am in the process of upgrading our Macs to Tiger. It seems that Windows TrueType fonts no longer render correctly in FileMaker 6.0v4. I am using Agfa's Sackers Gothic Medium and IDAutomation's 3 of 9 Barcode font. The Agfa font requires the field width to be increased by almost double what would normally be needed to avoid text wrapping to the next line. The barcode font now extends above the field boarders and crops the characters at the bottom. I can compensate by aligning the text to bottom with line spacing set at 1.2. In case of doing a file recovery you read a lot of different things, but one thing is not clear to me: After doing the recovery, is it really necessary to export all the data into a text format or is it safe enough to use the recoverd FileMaker files to import the data into clean clones? The first way means the hell of a work, especially afterwards when importing data and matching all data to the correct fields!

An installation has been running just fine for 3.5 years and suddenly Filemaker Pro 6 won't start--it gets to Loading IP/TCP and just quits--won't go any further. Ok, for better or worse I moved my 4000 field DB over to 7.0 v3. I have a few relational DBs connected primarily to moved scanned PDFs out of the main DB (storage purposes). After having crashed a couple of times, now, upon reestablishing the relationships "scans" for unused blocks EVERY TIME. Wasn't doing this trick the first month after I converted, but it is now the normal course of action. This totally sucks as it takes like 30 minutes to cycle through it. Considering moving the scans to a new DB and renaming over top of it. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Wes

Sorry for my confusion, but this is all relatively new to me, and I need a bit of help. I have Filemaker 5.5 server running on a windows 2000 box. I also have a separate copy of FM 6 Unlimited. The plan is to setup a new database that will have both FM access and web access, for more than 10 users. Do I install FM 6 Unlimited on a separate box & have it point web access to my 5.5 databases? (writting the new one in 5.5 I suppose). Or do I install FM 6 Unlimited on a separate box, write the new database in 6, & have FM6U host the database and handle the web access as well? Hi all, I'm relatively new to FMP7 and building my first solution. I'm wondering if there's a way to lock a field (from edit) based on some condition. I have a field in my main table, "grade", that should be locked based on a date range of two global fields in my user interface table. I have the global fields "grade_begin_dt" and "grade_end_dt" set to the date range when the field "grade" should be open. If the current date is outside of that range, I want to lock the "grade" field and prevent any edits. Any thoughts appreciated! -Heather

Please help, I randomly had Filemaker Pro 7 crap out on me on a PC running Windows 2000. The program has run fine for months, and out of nowhere, it nows freezes the whole machine while starting up (cursor moves, but remains an hourglass). The splash screen has paused on 'Initializing' and also 'Building Font Menu.' I've since done a complete uninstall, clearing out the registry and doing a clean install of FMP7 on this PC, and still it freezes on 'Building Font Menu.' I've tried emptying the Temp Folder as well as deleting what I believe were third party fonts (I could use more font advice though). Please help me!

I have a db that works great on WinXP, my creative team, all running Mac OSX, is having a hard time with some value list pop up lists - it is set up so that in field one, a job number is chosen via a pop up value list, then the 2nd field is populated with the corresponding job name (also a value list). On the PC, no issues, on the Mac, the job number part works fine, but it won't populate the 2nd field, unless the user clicks off of that field, clicks on one some other fielde, then clicks back to the job name field, then it fills the name in. Thought I might just ask this question to some of you that have a fair bit more experience than me with FM. I am coming to the point of completion on a solution I have been working on for some time. It has turned out to be an absolute monstrosity though. About 60 odd actual tables, literally thousands of fields and even more relationships (the gragh is almost impossible to make sense of). Hundreds of value lists, and I have to scroll down for 30 seconds or so to choose a layout from the bottom of the list. I am preparing the reports now and have worked out that the only way to produce one of the reports is to create a further 338 calculation fields, 169 relationships…

Hi, Customer recently moved to windows server 2003. Since then, randomly, the Fmp process just disappears !! My customer is becoming very stressed, as this can happend few times a day No event view messages, nothing consistent in the web logs... I haven't got the slightest clue what could cause this... Has anyone else had this problem? When in the browse mode in FM7 (w/ Mac OS 10.3.9) usually the cursor is half a character off, sometimes about eight characters off, occassionally right on. I did not have this problem with FM6. Any suggestions would be much appriciated. Thanks. (Btw, I'm a totally low level, one-person-office user.)

Hi gang, I just upgraded my pc and now when I am in my solutions, I get a "Blinking", on certain layouts. It seems to be refreshing at a rapid rate. On some layouts with graphics it can freeze up and blink for a long time. Is this a setting in FM or in Windows? How can I solve this? Any help is greatly appreciated. It's driving me crazy. Thanks

I'm currently working on a Filemaker 7 solution that contains about 6000 records. The solution keeps information on books and includes information such as authors, title, description, and so on. The title field is set to index all, and searches on the database occur very quickly, both using Filemaker client, and via the web with CWP with XSLT. The problem I'm having is when I attempt to sort the records. If I want to sort all of the records in the database the sort can take up to about 30-40 seconds, even if I sort on the title field (which is set to index all.) I am in the learning curve of the FileMaker 7 power. One great thing from this new version is the ability to have more than one window open at the same time. And in my solutions I used to define some globals. I perform validation through a script using the data that the user inputs. This way data can be modified before the record is created. With earlier versions there was no problem since every file had it's own globals. Now, with version 7 and all the possibilities you have in the relationships dialog box it is entirely different. Okay, recently we converted our bases from FileMaker 5.5 to 7, because there are greats improvement. However, it gives me hours and hours of readjustement, some functions does not work exactly the same way as before, and etc. But now, since our users begins to use the database, there is a huge problem happening at a lot of places in our databases : A message complaining that there is another user reserving a certain record. Sorry for posting this under General Discussion, but I wasn't sure where to put it. About 2 years ago, someone created a Filemaker database for me using FMPro v5. It was set up so that I could access it across the network at my office using a web browser. The web pages were generated using HTML files titled "default", "error", and "results". I have a windows 2000 server running apache web server. I would like to (temporarily) configure it to serve filemaker databases through wsc, while my other server (IIS) is being overhauled. I have a data base containing several tables. Each table represents hardware on our network, clients, servers, printers etc. Each machine is assigned a unique asset code. I would like to be able to define a search where an admin can come into a layout, enter an asset code and find the related hardware. this requires me to search on a single criteria across multiple tables. How is the best way to go about this? I was going to create a layout with one search box (for the asset id) and then several portals into each of the tables? Background info: Mac OS X 10.3.9. Trying to install Filemaker Pro 7. I'm a web developer who is overly confident on PCs and Unix-based systems but this new gig has me working in a cubicle on a Mac and I'm losing my mind (what's with only one mouse button? Weird). I have a FMP7 file that was initialy developed and in use while I developed a second component independent of the first. Is it possible to merge the two into one file or should I continue working with two separate files? It definitly is not aas clean as one file with additional tables.

I have a customer that is having regular problems with duplicate serial numbers in FMP 7. They have multiple users creating new records at one time and they are getting as many as 3-4 duplicates a day. Serialization is set to occur on record creation. In FMP 6 I scripted record creation and put users into a que while a different user was creating a new record. I've come to believe that duplicates shouldn't occur in 7. I've change the field to serialize on record commit for now (hoping that will help.) Has anyone else had any experience with this? Thanks much.

"Error 1723. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." Just to make sure we didn't get a wacked download, I transferred it to my computer (win xp) and upzipped it and installed it there, no problem. I've searched all over the net for any information on this error. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hi, I'm not entirely sure that this post is being made in the right topic, but here goes. I'm trying to design a database that takes care of daily and weekly production data for a TV show. Anyway, using two layouts I am able to take care of daily calculations (such as total tape recording time) with ease. However, because we handle operations, we only allocate some things on a weekly basis (such as total studio time). Using a second table to track this stuff is no biggie. However, I do have problems when I want to compute that for a given day we have used x% of our weekly studio time. So my question really is how can I have a calculation from the weekly…

Hi everyone, I created this database that allows me to track where a certain item has moved to and on what date. Therefore, there are many date fields for a specific item. What I want to do is print out the item, where it is, and the most recent move it made. Does anyone know how to do this? I don't want all the dates and places it has been to, just the most recent. Hi, I've had an issue with FM7 and FM7Dev on my Windows XP PC for a little while and now it's become a real problem. When I select field contents and copy, either by Ctrl C, menu Edit|Copy, right click|Copy, or by script, the copy randomly fails, leaving a null field in the clipboard. In other words, it writes over the previous clipboard contents with a null. I was gnashing my teeth and working around this for a while, but now I need to use the Copy function in a script. Spent the entire weekend moving my db over to FMPRO 7. The db is about 1.8 GB. When I go to back it up, by saving as "Database Copy", it takes like 40 minutes. Moreover, I can't see how far along it is because FMPRO has changed the scroll bar thing that used to show you the approximate percentage done to the diagonal bar thing. I've had this continuing problem for a long time. For no obvious reason, the last character in a field, usually a name field, sometimes doesn't show when I print the record. "John" shows up as "Joh". I've tried changing the font, size, and style; there's plenty of room in the layout; and it happens irregularly. If anyone has experienced this, I'd love some help fixing it. Thanks, Rick

In FM7, is it possible to reorder the record ID? The record Id matched the Order ID field until some records were deleted. The records have been recreated but there is a group that doesn't flow in sequence. I know I can sort the records and get what I need but I would like to have them match if possible. There aren't that many records and I am willing to reorder them manually if It can be done. Phil

Our company has some very complex FMP 5.0 databases, which is slated for a FMP 7.0 upgrade in the future. One of the shortcomings we find with FMP 5.0 is that it lacks Windows authentication, so users log in with passwords that do not required IDs and they do not expire. Does FMP 7.0 address this issue? Ideally it would integrate with Windows and allow for an ID/PW configuration providing for a more secure environment. BTW, we do have tracking in place user the user name defined in preferences, but really need to ID/PW process with expiring to meet internal audit needs. Any information is greatly appreciated. I have taken over a database with a new employer. This database has 37 files with the largest file having just over 700,000 records and is still growing. With other databases I have worked with I just archived older records but this solution is different. I need to have all of these records live all of the time. My estimated growth is about 2500 records per week in the largest of the tables. It seems that when we added the last push of records from about 640k to 700k that is when things really slowed down. One of the scripts that pulls in new records from a MySQL database went from 8 hours to a 14 hour job. What is causing all of this trouble? Is this too…

Hi, I use the international phonetic alphabet font in my databases. In the past, I have used non-unicode fonts in both FM 6 and 7 with no inputting problem (could not search though). In the last year, I updated to the unicode fonts and keyboard layouts. In the storage option I have selected Unicode as the default language and in field language, I have selected the font. The problem is that I cannot type any diacritics. That is, I can type all of the other symbols, but when I want to put a symbol over or under a particular letter, I cannot. I am developing a FM application, that works in combination with DeLorme Street Atlas, where the route for the drivers is exported to Delorme and he uses a GPS to visit all his stops. DeLorme supports hyperlinks for every mappoint (custom imported data field on the map) - it would be ideal if the driver could click on that hyperlink and that would bring him back to the matching record in the database, so he can look up information about his stop that he is about to make. I am new to FileMaker and am helping our Scheduling Director with her student database that contains a record for each time a student works. Exapmple, John Smith works Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. John Smith would have three records, and an additional one containing personal data. How can I read each record and have all of them display onto one layout. I know that Table view shows all the records, but I need to do some parsing. We are using Mac OS X Tiger in our office, we have a few Macs in our office that connect to FileMaker Pro 6. We have one Mac that always gets the following error when trying to connect to remote: "Program History" cannot be opened as read-only in its current state. Please unlock the file and open and close it before attempting to lock the file again. The file is not locked and is not read-only, none of the other Macs have this problem. Any help? Thanks!

My company recently bought volume licenses of Pro 6 & Server 5.5 from FileMaker, since it's nearly impossible for clients to buy these versions anymore. Our product is not currently available in V7, but will be soon. Anyway - we initially bought 50 Pro licenses, and will "divide" them up as clients need them, or in other words, we're reselling them. I didn't know this at first, but they give you one key# for all 50 licenses. I suppose there is nothing preventing a client from installing Pro more times than we sold them, up to 50 times. Hi Everyone. I just installed FileMaker Pro version 5.5 on my Windows 98se machine. I have java support installed as well. When i double click on my FM icon to launch it, it starts to load, but then it stops and i get the following error message "FILEMAKER PRO caused an exception 10H in module JVM.DLL at 0167:6d685abe." I have a solution that works locally, but when hosted over a network it does not. It has been converted from Version 6.0 to 7.0 and the solution has not been combined into one FP7 file. More Specifically, Imports from one database to another are not working. Notes: All import scripts go to a develop layout outs with all the fields on them and then import. All import have been rematched by hand. Select Window statements have been used to make sure that the process calls the correct database. Any other other suggests would most helpful for the imports are still not working correctly.

I have a database file that is getting a little large - it's getting to the point where I won't be able to back it up onto a CD anymore it's so large. I trimmed massive amounts of old and redundant entries from it, but it retains its original size. I've encountered this before with other programs and file types - usually doing a "Save as..." and saving it into a new file reduces the size (eg. Microsoft Word or Excel) or compacting mail folders in (eg. in Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird). However this does not seem to be the case with Filemaker. I would greatly appreciate it if you could please advise me on how to reduce this file size. Thank you.

I am currently running Filemaker 5 Server and Filemaker 6 Unlimited on an Mac OS X machine. I have them both on the same machine. The Filemaker 6 Unlimited was set to open up a file hosted on the 5 Server. But, for some reason the file was getting corrupt. I think I have narrowed it down to Unlimited was corrupting the file when somebody accessed it via the web. Is it possible to run both of those programs on the same machine? Am I asking for trouble? If I move the Unlimited to a different machine, but continue to access files hosted on the Server machine via Unlimited for web access will I be okay?

I am a non-programmer who has developed a largely flat DB in FMPRO 6.0 (4,000+ fields). I am considering converting to FMPRO 7.0 and wanted to know if there was a technique (once over) to move fields in the Main Table into a different table. Keep in mind that I have three years of programming in this sucker and a complete redo is out of the question. The program is admittadly designed like a spider web made by a spider on LSD. I also have to say the entire notion of switch to 7.0 feels a bit scary.

I use FMP 7 at work and i need to be able to save the file as a PDF or other file like I can on a MAC, so I can email that file so others can open and print it. How can I do this? If I go to PRINT- and click PRINT TO FILE, it will save the file to desktop but wont let me open it with any program.

My main user just upgraded to a spanking new VAIO notebook A497XP, Pentium M 2Ghz, Radeon 600XT 256MB. But it's 10 times slower in my fmp solution than is previous crappy 1GHz celeron desktop PC. In fact it seems that screen redraws are the problem, they're dog slow. I've tried to use freeze/refresh window script steps, it's a tad better but frankly it's not usable. On the desktop the screen redrwa are very very snappy. The main difference I see between the 2 computer is the OS. He runs WinXP ptro SP2 on the vaio, NT2000 on the desktop. Anyone as a clue ?

We run a network with about 7 computers, with FileMaker 4.1 running on an old Mac G3 server. We just added a new Windows XP client to the network, and we need to get another license to use for that computer. As far as I know, FM does not offer version 4.1 any longer. We can't load FM 7, because I understand we cannot have one client running a newer version than everybody else; and we are not in a position to upgrade the entire network right now. (Most of the clients are Macs, and some of the older Macs will not support OSX, for example. Also, our database is very old and we've been told it might not run in newer versions.) I'm using FM 5 on a Windows ME machine and sharing its files with 5 networked users with a Linux box dictating the network's terms. I have workstations running XP pro and Windows ME. Recently whenever a user tries to access one of the filemaker files the error message "the maximum number of licensed users are currently using this copy of FileMaker Pro (etc)". The trouble is there are no users with FileMaker open when this message appears. FileMaker hasn't had any problems previously until I installed a DSL gateway which took over the DHCP serving from the Linux box. Since FMP 5.0 is not supported on a Windows 2003 server, we are testing to confirm it still functions are expected. As part of our contingency plan we are testing the drag-drop process to convert our 5.0 DBs to 7.0, but are not confident this will work well since I have read that complex DBs do not convert well without a re-write. One more test we are considering is using FMP 5.0 on our client devices to access a FMP 7.0 DB on the Windows 2003 server. Is this possible?

I loaded both Filemkaer 7 Pro and Filemaker Developer and was stunned at the lousy screen font display. Previous reports that I like to display at relatively small font or magnification onscreen in order to see the maximum amount of fields and data at once are close to being un-readable. I found some posts that said the V2 update fixes this, but after going thru the substantial update the improvement is minimal if at all. The fonts are clear when at larger magnification / size, but the reports that I can still run in FM6 in the desired magnification are frustrating and close to unusable in 7. Anyone have a clue? OUr school just upgraded from filemaker 5.5 to 7.0 Pro, but when I open a 5.5 file in 7.0 it asks to convert it. After converting it, it now has a name and password. In 5.5, there is just a password screen. Now 7pro won't accept any of the working passwords from 5.5. How can i get this to work ?
