Dear Forum I have a solution already for time keeping of a facility, my client has 6 facilities all over the cityand the central database in a central point, they are connected via CD0 servers, my question is if I can link my solution with this servers and work in filemaker through this network??? and where I can find information to pull this of??? I have built a data base containing a series of documents, approximately 1000. I have also built a tracking file who keeps track of who has read the publication and when. There is 1000 potential readers. All of this on the web. So far I have managed to do so and it works well. When someone reads a document, he clicks on a button which enters the reader's ID, the documet ID and the date and time on a second file. Now I need to produce a web list of which member of the potential readers list who has NOT read the document. This has to be done using FMP 6 unlimited. It would be easy to do so unsing FMP 8 but... I can't seem to find a reliable calculation for obtaining numerical information for three "true" conditions. The conditions are this: if[input date = search date] and if[field1 = "nc"] and if[field2 = "something"] then return the sum of fields 4 + 5 - Right now I am having to use a script to return these results, but given the fields that the script is working in have 40 repeating cells, I don't think I'm using the cleanest solution. Is there a log or a way to create a log that tracks when a person logs into a .fp5 database and how long they were logged in. It's a multiuser db on a network drive accessed by 3 or 4 people.

I need to be able to run a local-only copy of a database that has references to an FM5.5 server on my network. I have lots of scripts that refer to the host ip of FM Server. Would going into the Preferences->Application and changing the Network Protocol to , allow me to use the database in a local-only state. I do not want to have to edit all of my scripts. I just want to be able to run the local copy of the database without having any interaction with the actual production server. Thanks

I used a Global Summary field to get the resulting balance, but I can't figure out how to get an individual "subtotal" for each record or line I insert. Hello I'am having troubles with a field that need a required value. I use a radio button so the customers need to accept our terms of delivery. The button only has a value "Yes" and is standaard unchecked. When I send my form with the button NOT selected so there is no input, the databases accepts it. How come? My Text fields wich also need required input does work the right way. When you do not enter any data in this kind of fields a pop-up box shows and tell you that field xxx needs input. So does anybody know why it doensn't work with radio buttons! Greetings Jukkie

Ok so I've got a filemaker database that has been setup with all our forms and what not. I teach children with visual impairments, to give you all some background. I've recently moved into the realm of PDA's and so have filemaker mobile 2.1 with filemaker 6 since that's what the school district is using. Anyway my problem is that everyone has used filemaker really just to print out forms, not for actual data entry so much. I only have ten fields I can use on the mobile version. Does anyone know how I can set the 'Zoom In' level for ALL the open windows? I have a fp5 file with a button and script to change the zoom level to 150%. But I want to run this across multiple USR files so that they all zoom to 150%. I have another file which opens them from a server. I can zoom my current window but none of the others with: Set Zoom Level [150%] Tried also with the 'Open' command or 'Go To Layout' but the files are already open and this doesn't work. Does anyone have any ideas on how I might do this? Thanks!

I recently reinstalled Windows XP Pro (SP2). This was a clean install after scrubbing the drive (Gotta nuke the site from orbit, it's the only way to be sure). I reinstalled all the programs including FM Developer 5.5. However, whenever I run the updater, I get this error and it stops. ! Internal Error 2755. 1612, C:WindowsInstaller253e7.msi OK Anyone encounter this or have any idea what gives? I even tried installing it on an old 2000 box and get the same error.

I just upgraded to Tiger and as soon as I go into layout mode and choose the menu choice "field formatting" or "field borders" the program crashes. Tested the same database on FM Pro 7 on Tiger and the same crash is happening. Same database on Panther 10.3.9 functions without problem. Can´t find any postings on this and would appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

I need to create a field which looks at an existing field and strips out everything in it which is between chevrons, i.e. replace with nothing. How do I put this into the function? I've tried asterisks and it doesn't understand them, I guess because in a function they mean multiplication! First post, hope someone can help! Emma

I think I worked this out right, but I want to make certain I'm not messing anything up. I want to have a database set up with a link to a WordPerfect file. What I originally did was place a container in my database with a link to that file. Double clicking on the icon for that file brought up WordPerfect. Is this the proper way to do this? Doing a school reporting database. In one particular layout each pupil has normal data ( forename, surname, subject, class etc) but also has 3 strategies fields which staff can use to choose strategies an individual pupil may use to help them with a particular subject. The 3 strategies fields are formated to use a pop-up menu from a related database, which has only 2 fields: subject and strategy. For example "Music" and "Practise your instrument more". The problem is when I do a find for a particular class the records take about 2 seconds each to appear in list view. I have a filemaker 6 database. I have been using calculated values for several date fields. All has been well, but now some dates are way off some are right. I am taking a user inputed date and adding 364 for one(it has never failed.) The next two always fail together calculted off the same field as the other(Approval Date). The two fields add 350 or 400 and must be in date form. They come out in date form just not the right year some time 2003, 2004,2006 but rarely 2005 like they should be. I am trying to create a Online Event Registration Database that will enable students to signup to courses with limited seating. This database would also have to be multi-user accessible as students would be scramblimg to signup just as when tickets for a concert come available. I need to populate fields in a database based on a value in a different database (the master d/:. So, in the master d/b, all the records with a value of X in the category field would populate certain fields in the other database; values of Y in the master d/b would populate other fields, and so on. I'm new to FM, and the lookups I've done in the past were more straightforward because there was a common field between the databases. For this instance, I think I need to do a lookup based on an IF,THEN statement. Is this possible? Thanks!

Hi. I made a script to tidy up holes in a repeating fields, by moving the next to the one that's empty. But it did not work, so I did some testing. Set(non-repeating, GetRepetition(rep_field, 3) - works fine Set(rep_field, "test") - works fine Set("rep_field"- 2, "test") - works fine ... and so on even Set("rep_field", GetRepetition(rep_field, 3)) - works fine, but; Set("rep_field"- 2, GetRepetition(rep_field, 3)) - (and so on) does not work. Hi I'm running Filemaker 6 - with 5 users. I have four databases that all talk to each other: contacts organisations program volunteers Everything has been running really well using up to 3 licenses but now, using 5 licenses, random things keep going wrong...for example, for no reason at all a script might stop working. If you change to layout mode and back to browse mode it will magically work again. It's also incredibly slow to load up and very slow to swap between the databases using on-screen buttons...sometimes running these external scripts even crashes the program altogether. The real problem I'm having is that some of my portals aren't updating…

When I attempt to launch FMP 6.0v1 on a Mac G4 now running OS X 10.4 (Tiger) (this also happened with OS X 10.3), I get the splash screen, then within 2 seconds, the application spontaneously quits. This happens whether I launch the application alone, or by double-clicking a database file. There are no other copies running on my home network when I launch it. Our server was accidently shut down improperly a couple of weeks ago. I have recovered the damaged files, however there is one database file which wants to open however... i just get the spinning wheel of death and nothing happens to the point that i have to forcequit FMpro5.5. I didn't close my file properly (slap wrist!) and so it got damaged. The problem is, I can't recover it. The dialogue box prompts to name the recovered file and then when I Save, recovery stops. I can see the recovery process flash for a second and then it just stops. Is it possible to run Server 5 and Pro 5.5 on same box without causing problems? This is a dedicated FM server machine, (Win2k Server). Our database admin wants to run Pro on the server to modify files without having to move them to a separate machine. I can't seem to find a definitive answer on this.

I'm having a few small problems sending text emails using cdml. The emails pull data out of a database. If the data has a ampersand or the symbol for inch-", those characters are actually displayed as " and $ in the final email text. Any ideas on how I can get around this? Thanks,

I am in the process of upgrading our Macs to Tiger. It seems that Windows TrueType fonts no longer render correctly in FileMaker 6.0v4. I am using Agfa's Sackers Gothic Medium and IDAutomation's 3 of 9 Barcode font. The Agfa font requires the field width to be increased by almost double what would normally be needed to avoid text wrapping to the next line. The barcode font now extends above the field boarders and crops the characters at the bottom. I can compensate by aligning the text to bottom with line spacing set at 1.2. An installation has been running just fine for 3.5 years and suddenly Filemaker Pro 6 won't start--it gets to Loading IP/TCP and just quits--won't go any further. Hi, Customer recently moved to windows server 2003. Since then, randomly, the Fmp process just disappears !! My customer is becoming very stressed, as this can happend few times a day No event view messages, nothing consistent in the web logs... I haven't got the slightest clue what could cause this... I have a windows 2000 server running apache web server. I would like to (temporarily) configure it to serve filemaker databases through wsc, while my other server (IIS) is being overhauled. There is a problem, however: the wsc installation does not recognize my setup, it is expecting to find IIS, and aborts the installation. Can anyone please help?

I've had this continuing problem for a long time. For no obvious reason, the last character in a field, usually a name field, sometimes doesn't show when I print the record. "John" shows up as "Joh". I've tried changing the font, size, and style; there's plenty of room in the layout; and it happens irregularly. If anyone has experienced this, I'd love some help fixing it. Thanks, Rick

We are using Mac OS X Tiger in our office, we have a few Macs in our office that connect to FileMaker Pro 6. We have one Mac that always gets the following error when trying to connect to remote: "Program History" cannot be opened as read-only in its current state. Please unlock the file and open and close it before attempting to lock the file again. The file is not locked and is not read-only, none of the other Macs have this problem. Any help? Thanks!

I have a database file that is getting a little large - it's getting to the point where I won't be able to back it up onto a CD anymore it's so large. I trimmed massive amounts of old and redundant entries from it, but it retains its original size. I've encountered this before with other programs and file types - usually doing a "Save as..." and saving it into a new file reduces the size (eg. Microsoft Word or Excel) or compacting mail folders in (eg. in Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird). However this does not seem to be the case with Filemaker. I would greatly appreciate it if you could please advise me on how to reduce this file size. Thank you.

I am currently running Filemaker 5 Server and Filemaker 6 Unlimited on an Mac OS X machine. I have them both on the same machine. The Filemaker 6 Unlimited was set to open up a file hosted on the 5 Server. But, for some reason the file was getting corrupt. I think I have narrowed it down to Unlimited was corrupting the file when somebody accessed it via the web. Is it possible to run both of those programs on the same machine? Am I asking for trouble? If I move the Unlimited to a different machine, but continue to access files hosted on the Server machine via Unlimited for web access will I be okay?

My main user just upgraded to a spanking new VAIO notebook A497XP, Pentium M 2Ghz, Radeon 600XT 256MB. But it's 10 times slower in my fmp solution than is previous crappy 1GHz celeron desktop PC. In fact it seems that screen redraws are the problem, they're dog slow. I've tried to use freeze/refresh window script steps, it's a tad better but frankly it's not usable. On the desktop the screen redrwa are very very snappy. The main difference I see between the 2 computer is the OS. He runs WinXP ptro SP2 on the vaio, NT2000 on the desktop. Anyone as a clue ?

We run a network with about 7 computers, with FileMaker 4.1 running on an old Mac G3 server. We just added a new Windows XP client to the network, and we need to get another license to use for that computer. As far as I know, FM does not offer version 4.1 any longer. We can't load FM 7, because I understand we cannot have one client running a newer version than everybody else; and we are not in a position to upgrade the entire network right now. (Most of the clients are Macs, and some of the older Macs will not support OSX, for example. Also, our database is very old and we've been told it might not run in newer versions.) I'm using FM 5 on a Windows ME machine and sharing its files with 5 networked users with a Linux box dictating the network's terms. I have workstations running XP pro and Windows ME. Recently whenever a user tries to access one of the filemaker files the error message "the maximum number of licensed users are currently using this copy of FileMaker Pro (etc)". The trouble is there are no users with FileMaker open when this message appears. FileMaker hasn't had any problems previously until I installed a DSL gateway which took over the DHCP serving from the Linux box. I have several databases with 30,000 plus items in each. Each database should have matching inventory but they don't. I thought I could create a new data base that could compare the inventory #s from each of the other databases so that the same inventory # would line up across the page, enabling me to see the discrepancies. That didn't really work. I couldn't get the numbers to line up. Can anyone help me - by telling me what I'm not thinking through in this plan or with another idea about how to find the discrepancies. I have a web forms system which I created at home, and now want to host live from work. At home, I have a DSL line and just needed to plug my computer in and use my static IP in order to let people access the page. Now that I have moved the system to work, we can only get to it using the internal IP (192...), but not from outside. We have FMP set to use port 591 and have given that port a place on the firewall, but it looks like we have done this incorrectly. Are there certain steps to follow to be sure we are configuring the IP and port correctly? We are using sonicwall and are supposed to be LIVE by Tuesday! Any help would be AMAZING!!

Please no comments about using 5.5 or upgrading to latest version. I was given this copy and decided to get my feet wet. The box was originally marked for Mac OS X, but I was told the CD also had the Windows code on it. So, I inserted it and it installed perfectly on my windows xp system. However, like I do with all programs, I went to the FM site to see if there were updates, and found two.. one to bring it to V2 (which it says also includes V3) and another to bring it to V4. I've got a database with a field called number, which holds a number. There are 20,000 or so records. If I want to find the duplicates I just search using the exclamation mark find symbol. No problem! Is there a way to search to keep one duplicated record, and omit the other duplicates? Say I have 4 records with a number 365 in. When I search for ! it returns all 4 of those records. Is there a way for it to return just 3 of those records, leaving one of those in with the rest of the records?? Thanks Ben

It has been updated over time and HAS been running fine in 5.5 and 6. Recently while using FileMaker 5 and 6 on Windows XP(SP2) I have started seeing some very odd errors, and I have not been able to find out anything about them. It starts with this error dialog: Error::3014::EFPCLREG.C::InitializeCustomDataArea Unable to ParsePPD Then, if you click OK, this error appears: Error::1024::EFPCLDLG.C::OEM_BeginSession Unable to InitializeCustomDataArea Hit OK again, and the first error reappears, starting an endless loop of these two errors. I'm using mac os x panther, fm unlimited 6 and fm server. We are using fm for an ecommerce solution and for security we do not want all our databases to appear on the instant publishing home page. We have seen some documentation that says that this can be done by simply ending the database name with an underscore.. eg: database_.fp5 Sadly, this simple solution does not seem to work... our "databases_.fp5" are still visible on the homepage. Can anyone tell me an easy way to keep selected databases OFF our web publishing home page so that we are not offering up our customer information for anyone who cares to look at it? Using Filemaker 4.1 v1: I have 6 database files being shared on PCs (same version on all) using Windows 98 SE. ONLY one of those 6 shared databases exhibits the following problem and only a new laptop using Windows XP Pro: in every field where the text would normally end, it extends somewhat beyond the border of the field before wrapping to the next line i.e. the cursor appears to be located to the left of where it affects the text, each space (right arrow) width is slightly smaller than each displayed letter or number of text. Have you seen FileMaker application shows Greek alphabets? Sometimes when I type in something, it displays as Greek alphabets. Sometimes it just translates the whole message alphabets into Greek alphabets. I am not sure why it does it. Any ideas? thank you. Jackson

I've been asked to alter the setup of set of db's currently being served out over the web by filemaker unlimited 6. It's not really a web/CDML question so please read on before flaming. Current setup/filepath is: Filemaker/Web/MyCompany/Clients.fp6. There's a couple of other db's within the "MyCompany" folder. What I've been asked to do is duplicate the "MyCompany" folder with all of its db's residing in it and rename that folder "MyCompany2" and place the Clients.fp6 db one level up to reside in the Web folder. This would act as the client db for all the multiple "MyCompany" folders that could be created. One of the issues of course is that then FM will be serving out …

A user that accesses FM Server 5.5 via FM Pro 5.5 got this message "file nearly full" while in a file. The user was just starting to type when message was displayed. The user had to close FM Pro 5.5 and when the user tried connecting using TCP/IP, the server was not listed. I input the address of the FM server but nothing happened. I then rebooted the Server PC and the user was able to logon and see her files without any messages or errors.Why would this happen? Could it be a memory thing with the OS or a fluke?

Running a W2K Server test PC running Server 5.5. Running XP Pro SP2 on another test PC which is running 5.5 Pro. The FM 5.5 Pro PC(XP Pro)just had meta expert fonts installed on it using ATM. Now when accessing the FM 5.5 Server all the fonts in FM Pro 5.5 are not readable, looks like Egyptian characters. I uninstalled the meta expert fonts and the problem went away. Is there info somewhere to fix this issue?

I am needing to deploy a custom CDML solution where users will basically be creating and editing records. There are no scripts called from the pages or that run while the database is used, nor are there calculations on the layout accessed via the web. There is one relationship and about 30 fields on the "create" and "edit" pages. Help! I have been using my database for years, now all of a sudden, when I create a new record, all is well till I hit enter, then I can no longer edit the fields, nor can I find the record I just created. When I do a find, it tells me no records match the request. All my other records are fine. The database is 24 mb and almost 23,400 records. Hmmm, have I hit a limit? What is happening? Thanks

I cannot install FM Pro 6 Unlimited under OSX (10.3.8). When I run the "Start Here Mac OS X" installer it starts Classic and then says it cannot install because it requires 10.1.0 or newer! Any thoughts? Many thanks, Stephen

Hey guys/gals, is it possible to when specifying a backup schedule in FileMaker Server 5.5 to just specify a specific file instead of the whole folder of database files. When I select "Specify" and browse my MAC OS X SERVER for the FM DB files to backup, when I get to the folder, all the files are GRAYED out, making them unselectable. I have a Calendar Database file that I am trying to network over 2 computers. With the files to be shared residing on computer A (FM6), it can't be opened via Open Remote. The same when it is residing on computer B(FM5.5). When it resides on computer C (FM5.5) (a laptop), it can be accessed by both A & B. Computer C cannot access it if it resides on either A or B. I think I have everything set the same, but appently am overlooking something to get it to work as I want. Hi folks, I created an appointment book solution for a spa/salon that works well as is but is a little slow for their (and my) liking. There are 20 employees with various schedules. The appointments are booked in 15 minute increments and are added, removed, and adjusted constantly. I have used 20 portals to show each employees schedule on the screen with 5 portals showing at a time. Initially, this worked wonderfully as we used finds to seek out openings for particular services and/or employees. We are migrating our web server from Windows to Linux, and are moving our FMU package to a Windows 2003 machine where the web server will proxy it. FMU runs fine, as far as operation goes, but when it starts up, it will not find the FM server, even though it is in the same subnet. When I click on "Local hosts" nothing shows up in the list. If I click on the server name (I've added it to the list) it finds it just fine. The 2003 box can do both forward and reverse lookups on the name/ip of the FM server, and can connect to it fine when explicitly given the name, but it will not find it automatically which prevents FMU from starting up at boot.* Any ideas? …

We have recently installed FMP6 on a Windows XP desktop to print magnet striped cards to a Fargo DTC525 printer. The printer setup is fine, and the layouts look great. The problem is the mag stripe. To encode the data, the printer needs ASCII characters with specified leads and endings. Piece of cake, I made calc fields to create that text for each record. Getting the printer to encode them properly, however, has eluded me. I can print just text to the cards and it looks great. But when I add my calculated text strings to the layout, I lose the printed text and fail to encode the cards properly. When the encoder puts data on the tracks and I run them throug…

(Mac OSX; FMP 6) One of our users had an FMP 6 file open when her computer crashed. Now when we go to open the file, FMP just shuts down: we get the splash screen and the password box, but when we enter the password and hit enter, FMP closes and gives us the error message "The application FileMaker Pro has unexpectedly quit"... I am in desparate trouble. I have a nine file data base that tracks donations and participant activities for a non-prof that helps cancer patients. It has been running on FMP 5.5. I have to use 5.5 because that's what they have on their PCs. This data base runs on their Windows machines, while I have been updating it at home on my Mac (OS 10.3.3, G4 Dual, 1.5GB RAM). Hi all, I want to add some fields to an existing database of ours. When I go into the client and do: File, Define Fields. I get the following error: "The command cannot be used with a shared file. To use this command, make sure that you are the only user of "MainMenu". Filemaker the program is not current installed on our server (at least i dont think so) its just the services that are on there. Do I need to install it on the server and run it from there? I am developing 7 web based questionnaires - with data being stored in FMP databases - using FileMaker Pro 6 Unlimited. Several of the databases have very similar structures/questions - what I want to know is would it be better to have one database for each questionnaire or to have several questionnaires sharing the same database (though not using all the fields). I want to minimise the server response times - will have thousands of respondents - keen that they get their pages served up to them as rapidly as possible. FMP 6 for Classic (9.2.2) is running very slow on the G4 dual 867GHz that I'm using at work. The problem is in just about all features I've tested. For example, if I click any menu item, it takes ~10 secs for the menu to display. If I switch modes, it takes about 10 seconds for that mode to display. I've trashed the FileMaker Pro 6 folder and reinstalled; the problem persisted. I've installed FileMaker Pro 6 for Mac OS X. It runs properly under Jaguar.8. If I use the latter, however, the host from which I need to access a shared database does not display in the Hosts dialog. Any suggestions??? Many thanks in advance and cheers!

Filemaker Pro takes about 3-4 minutes to startup but once its up it runs ok. Has anyone ran into this before? I have read that it has something to do with the system fonts so so i reloaded them but still no luck. Maybe I'm doing something wrong or maybe this is not even the right path. Our Computer Lab has about 20 Macs; one uses OS 7.5.2 (the good old reliable standby), several use OS 9.2, and 5 use OS 10.3.8. FileMaker Pro Vers.4 only works on OS 9 and below. Does anyone have any idea what this message really means? "FileMaker Pro cannot host files because another user is already hosting files using FileMaker Pro on this computer. Multi-user (shared) files will not be available to FileMaker Pro guests." V6 on Citrix. Note that we do not use Server. There were two users sharing 4 files. Hi Folks, I'm stymied. I have 16 related files that make up a database solution. Most of the "work" that the people in my office do is from one of these files (Members). I have a script that runs whenever you open the Members file which opens all of the other files. THis used to work like a charm, but since I recently expanded the database (enlarging it from 8 related files to 16 related files), this script has been crashing at random times (not regularly so that I can isolate the problem, but sporadically). Hi, While I was out of town, the server crashed, and the people in office recovered the files half on Macs & half on PCs without correcting the date format on the PCs. Now, the files randomly have different date formats of MM-dd-yyyy or dd-MM-yyyy which is driving me crazy for my date sets and period based searches.
