Hi everyone, My boss and I have been discussing the future of our FileMaker databases, and whether it would be worthwhile to upgrade. First, a little background. We are running FileMaker Server 5.5 on a machine running OS X 10.2.8. It interfaces with our web server, which is running WebSTAR on a 10.2.8 machine, via Lasso Pro 5. This, as I am sure you know, involves using a "web companion" machine running FileMaker Pro 5.5. This is on a machine running Windows XP. While this does work, the technology is very out of date, and the web companion is prone to problems, with FMP hanging up on a semi-regular basis. Plus, the hardware these machines are on is all o…

I am working on a DB that will be accessed via web browsers. The database is served from FileMaker Server Advanced. I'd like the server to send an email when the user is done, is this possible? It seems to me it isn't, but I'm hoping I'm wrong. I know the Send Mail step isn't web-compatible.

Hi all, Just wondering if anyone has come across the problem where they can no longer get into the Server Administration Tool? When clicking on the big icon, and clicking on Connect (on localhost), it says Login Failed. It was fine previously, but was moved to a different location (physically), and now we continuously get this error. Any ideas please? Thanks, Diane.

I have a script that finds certain records based on 2 criteria. The file is working well but recently something wierd has happened. When I use the find script on my computer it works, but when it's used on other computers it does not recognize one of the criteria. So why would it work right on my machine but not on the others. The file is housed on a server. Thanks

Has anyone heard/used the online version of an application called CAQH? It's a general medical application that many different health plans use to submit doctors' info to/from. The paper application alone is 43 pages, and I've been able to 'map' the questions using a large FM database. Now I'm moving to the online version of this. They use XML as the core technology, which I have a fair understanding of. With such a huge project ahead of me, I wanted to see if anyone else has used this and has had any success with it. I might be able to shed some time if anyone else has experience with this, and can spare a moment or two. Thanks!

Has anyone encountered a problem with the "FileMaker Publishing Engine (CWPE & CONFIG)" service refusing to remain running? This is an FM8 Advanced installation. The service generates this event log error and quickly terminates within a few seconds of starting up. The Java Virtual Machine has exited with a code of 1, the service is being stopped. I'm unable to edit the configuration of the web engine via the web interface but the rest of the web engine is running fine with all IWP enabled databases showing up and serving out correctly by the server. Is there any sort of a java log kept by FM that would help diagnose this issue? Thanks

I'm using FM 5.5 Server on a Windows 2000 machine. Administering it from FileMaker 5.5 client (win2k)using the Admin plugin. When in the Remote Admin tool window, go to Open File and select FM db and get the error message, "Error occurred; unable to open file." Important to note: I can close the file using the Remote Admin tool, I just can't open it when I'm done with it. Sharing is on in the selected db. Permissions appear to be a go-go on the server. I can open the FM db on the server using client software but get an error message that a network issue is preventing sharing. However. If I start the FileMaker Server using Services, all FM files within…

I am looking for information on an error that I am unable to solve. We have a set-up with seven servers on Windows NT 4, Filemaker Server 5.5. Client has Filemaker Pro 6. In one of our databases (a VERY simple form database for filling out details for our shipping departments), we have one single user who keeps having problems with Filemaker crashing. I have looked at the database time and time again. I have looked at the errors in the server log, but nothing surfaces. I have checked that the data entry, which sometimes is done via longish pop-up lists, is the culprit, but it is not. I have had the machine checked of this user, but to no avail. I also had all sw…

Howdy y'all: I'm trying to build a contact database in FM7 using the provided template that I have customized. It's going great except I want to be able to include links (like a shortcut or hyperlink type thing) to files on the server that relate to the contact currently displayed. For example, Joe's Donuts has a logo, a brochure, and a business card all produced by us and I'd like to have a link(s) or button(s) that the users can add to the contact that 'points' to those specific files or even just Joe's Donuts' folder on the server, or just shows the file(s) in a finder window. Any ideas and or help is greatly appreciated. All the client machines are ru…

We've got Server Advanced 7.3 running on an X-Serve for several months now; which we use to serve to clients, and then pull to a secondary web server using XML/XSLT and the FX.php plugin. Within the last couple of weeks (the minute I took off for a week's vacation, natch), we've lost our Web Publishing engine for what appears to be no good reason. Clients still have perfect connectivity, no problems; but the XML/XSLT publishing goes poof on the server--this means that automated imports and updates using XML to the server don't run, etc. I've tried re-starting server admin, no luck. I go to the FM SA Web Publishing admin console (http://fmserveripaddress:16…

I share a central db with FM Server 5.5. There are users who cannot access this server once they are located outside our company network. Therefore, I have forseen a local clone of the central db, which is a personal tool for each user. Once they are located off the company network, they open their clone so they can log new records. When they return to the company, they do an UPLOAD of these new records towards the central db. My question: How do I make a secure UPLOAD script? Now I do this: the user opens his local copy, and executes this UPLOAD script from there. What is it: it is an external script from the central db that executes an import of the record…

Hello all, I am running FM 5.5 Unlimited on a Windows 2000 PC. On the client side they are using 5.5 pro with windows XP. I have created FM shortcuts to different databases that are on the server, via a script. When they launch the shortcut it can take up to 5mins or longer to open up the database. I found a tech note way back when that said to delete my temp files and that worked but it is only a temp solution. Anyone have this issue or a solution? Thanks, Jaser

Background: We have FileMaker Web Publishing (WPC & CWPE/CONFIG) installed on MS Server 2003. We purchased it about 2 weeks ago, so I assume we have the latest & greatest. I have one problem & one quirk. The problem comes with some Drop Down Lists. We use a series of 5 Drop Downs, with each Drop Down attached to a Relationship. (Year, Make, Model, Series, Body Style). Works good in the normal Client/Server setup. In the Web version, each time we make a Selection on one of the Drop Downs, the Web Page makes us hit a Submit Button. I have checked the Layout, and it saves the data directly (as one would expect, since it works with the FM Clie…

I have been debating scraping 13 yrs worth of FM use b/c of the limitations of Filemaker. Is it true that even using CWP (fx.php for example) that server advanced will still only allow 100 simultaneous users? Can someone explain exactly what that means? Is it what it sounds like..that 100 users can access your server advanced hosted web site at once? If so that seems extremely limited! If so, I wonder why anyone would still be using Filemaker as a backend to deploy web based systems? If you have to use middleware such as php anyway, why not then just use mysql instead as the backed? Thanks in advance for any feedback. It is a very important issue that I am face …

Hello all: I've been asked by a client to explore encryption possibilities for a FileMaker 5/6 system, running FileMaker Server 5. The only thing I've found is Troi's old Coding plug-in. While it does indeed encrypt and decrypt fields, it's going to be a bit clunky to use on an existing 3000 field database. Does anyone know of any other options out there? Due to OS limitations, the client is stuck for the forseeable future with FMP 5/6. Thanks, Stanley

I've installed FMS8 + WPE on an xserve (10.3.9) All goes OK until I try to configure the WPE via the web console. (I'm using a secure/https server) No matter what I try, I keep getting a message... "The web server and Administration Console server must be restarted before continuing to configure the Publishing Engine." Yes I've restarted the processes and the machine a few times to no avail. Also tried uninstalling and reinstalling from scratch. I tried an install on OSX 10.3.9 client and I do get past this point. Any help or pointers to try out would be extremely gratefully accepted. Ta

Have recently installed FM Server 8 Advanced, with the Web Publishing engine on the same machine, a G5 running OS X 10.4.6. The web server works, and I can execute an XML query like this: http://localhost/fmi/xml/fmresultset.xml?-db=approves&-lay=DigitalAdvertisers&-findany This returns one record, which I expected, but it is not formatted in any way, which I also expected. I understand that I have to route the results through an XSLT stylesheet to get pretty formatting of the results, so I modified my query like this: http://localhost/fmi/xsl/adresults.xsl?-grammar=fmresultset&-db=approves&-lay=DigitalAdvertisers&-findany This…

Hi, I'm trying to get FM Server 5.5 to run on Debian 3.1 (the latest). At work I have it working on RedHat and Fedora and I got it installed on Debian (using alien to convert the rpm to a deb package) but then I don't succeed in getting it registered or even started. The error message is known to me as it's the same that you get when trying to run it as-is on RedHat > 7.2: fmserverd: relocation error: fmserverd: symbol __on_exit, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference The thing is that I don't know how to solve this issue on Debian ... anyone got a clue how to do that? Thanks, Bernd

Does anyone have any details on the client server interactions of making database schema changes? The reason I ask is because, while developing a solution file on my laptop using wifi, the wifi has on two occasions dropped out in the middle of processing a schema change. This means the file becomes totally corrupt, and I have to go back to a backup file. I would have thought that that sort of thing would have been transactional, ie the FM client sends all changes at once to the server for processing, the server checks it's a complete and valid request, then all the operations done exclusively on the server, with it just sending informational progress update…

A lot of the navigation techinques within my first multiuser solution depend upon global fields. A user may go to a layout and work there for awhile before returing to the original layout (or some other layout). Where you came from is stored in a global. That's how the solution knows where to return to when the user hits the "Return" button. What if someone else uses the same global during a wait period? Or in the middle of running a script that depends on a global. If all users shared the same globals, then this would make my solution behave totally eratically! Have I totally screwed up? Jason

Hi, I have coworkers sitting at customers sites with restricted surfing possibilities, they can access port 80 only at external sites. My IWP solution for timetracking starts at port 80, but answer them on port 16080. I´ve been looking around for a setting somewhere, but cannot find any in WPE. Maby a setting in Apache? A login at: http://:80/fmi/iwp/cgi?-db=&-startsession Returns: http://:16080/fmi/iwp/cgi?-db=-loadframes If they manually change the port to 80 it works, but thats an ugly feature... Can anyone help? I do know it is bad to open a shared file over a network. But is it also bad to open a single user file on a network drive? I do not want to load these 15 files on the fmserver because my # of fies is already over 100 and I do not want to host more files if they are only going to be used by 1 person every once in a while. I am trying to determine what kind of performance I need out of my hardware given a couple of different scenarios. I am setting up a php site on a third party web server, so I don't have to worry about a complete lack of web presence if our connection is down in the office. I am planning to start a modest database server based around FMAS. The system is likely to serve around 10 databases and never have more that around 10 concurrent users. The databases would themselves would be relatively small with definately less than 1000 entries and probably more like 200. I was planning on headless unit that would be hidden away and adminstered with VNC. Would a dual G5 powermac be overkill? Would a PowerPC mac mini be enough? Thanks for your help.

Hi, I have have searched everywhere for a solution with no luck. I am a noob so this could be simple. I am using filemaker to create proofsheets for our clients. I don't know if this is a coincidence, but I just installed php5 on our windows 2003 server which is running fmas8 and IIS6. Since I installed php5 and configured IIS to run it, I can't log into the FM web admin console. When I try go to that page now(http://localhost/fmi/config)I get a dialog asking me if I want to save this file called config, so its trying to download the config file instead of showing just showing the config page. Like I said, it wasn't doing this before I installed php and configured IIS, so I'm guessing I need to change a setting in IIS. Thanks for any suggestions anyone can offer.

Is it possible for a Custom Web Published database to execute a script in a database being Instant Web Published? Here is the basic scenario that I desire: 1. User types a URL into a web browser. 2. The index.html file for that URL redirects the user to CWP database. 3. The CWP database then executes a script in a database that is only being IWP'd. 4. The script in the IWP database runs and updates the browser window to display the layout that the script is told to go to. Is this scenario possible? In my preliminary tests, I can't seem to get the browser to switch from CWP to displaying the IWP layout. Thank you, Chris Scott

I'm feeling a bit stupid for asking this but I have never had to do it. I am having a the makers of a plug-in troubleshoot my problems with their product and they have asked me to send them a clone of our file with no data/records. I have our backed up files but obviously they are full of data. The database they need to look at is tied to two others. I guess I need to send them all three. Also, how do I give full access if they have to use a password. Thanks for helping with my problem!

So we had a power flash during a lightning storm last week, (4 separate flashes of <1 second each over a two minute period) My filemaker server box (Dual 1.8 G5 with 10.3.9 and FMSA 7) did not go down during this time, and there were clients connected that didn't get disconnected. So I assumed (stupidly as it turns out) that everything was OK. Hi all, I've just migrated a system running Server v7 to Server v8 (and then patched to 8v2). I stopped the relevant services, then used the Backup Settings Tool to save all the paths and schedules from v8 before removing Server v7. Then installed v8, and used the Restore Settings Tool to, well restore the settings! Everything is fine, except one minor detail. The default Database Path can't be changed or set (it's greyed out) and sadly is set to the old v7 path. It's not an operational issue as I have the db files under a custom path, but I can't change the default which points to a older v7 server path, and hence can't remove the final parts of the v7 f…

Does anyone have experience of installing Advanced Server and IWP on OS X Server (10.4.6) managed by Tenon iTools? The OS is a clean install with SSL, iTools, FMSA and nothing else. Tenon tell me they have customers running this combination successfully, including Apache 2, but I can't persuade it to open the web admin console with either Apache 2 or 1.3. FMServer is sharing databases with FMPro clients and the Web Publishing Engine is running, but when I try to open the console I get: https://www.:443/fmi/config Not Found The requested URL /fmi/config was not found on this server. Apache/2.0.55 (iTools 8.0.5)/Mac OS X) DAV/2 mod_fastcgi/2.4.2 mod_ssl/2.0.55 …

I have a machine that hosts the web server, Filemaker 6 Client, and on the same computer has the database files. This Filemaker 6 database is for the web and performs very slow. Question is will having a separate Filemaker server that hosts the database be better for the speed of the user accessing thru the web? -Thanks, Ainge

When I install Server 8 web Publishing everything works fine. I connect to the admin console and create a FMSA user and password. Move on to create a WPE password and user, no problem. Get to point out the FM server, and then it gets problematic. When i register my settings I get an "unexpected error" and then I'm stuck. The WPE user and password i registerd do not work so I can't get in and try something else. So I reinstalled the thing and the same thing happend again. I would be glad for any ideas or comments you can give me.

Every night during the week my server crashes regularly between 5 pm and 6 pm (ie. quitting time). On the weekend, no one is logged in and the server does not crash. On occasion, the server has quit in the middle of the day, typically a Friday. Once it has quit for the day, it will be fine until the next evening. I am not recovering files. I always pull from the latest backup. When the server crashes, I have been watching the Activity Monitor. The “fmserverd” process will go away but the other two FM process will remain. To “restart” the server, I have been replacing the crashed files with my backups and started the Admin app. The “fmserverd” will startup and wo…

Hey I think I read something about this hear but not sure. I have two mirror systems running on different servers: One in 7 and one in 8 each on their own server. The system uses xslt to publish data to the web. in 7 a page takes about 6 sec to load or less. In 8 it takes at least 30 sec. Does anyone know what the issue is between the two versions and how to fix it. Thanks Darren

Hello everyone, I have this filemaker script which needs to run in the background once a day. Since I purchased Filemaker server 8, I thought I would be able to schedule it but unfortunately I understood that Filemaker Server only runs "shell scripts". I have absolutely no idea what a shell script is and was wondering if someone could help set it up. I should probably just say: open file "TTM bookings" in Filemaker pro 8 and perform script "export all icals for all artists"... I tried to check the net for examples, but I am afraid it is like chinese for me. thank you in advance.

Is there an elegant way for a filemaker user to request (or force) other users to log off via script maker? I have some large batch operations during which I'd prefer for no other users to be using the file simultaneously. It'd be great if there was a script command which would force other users to log off (or at least, send them a message politely asking them to?) I don't absolutely need for this to happen, but I'd feel more comfortable knowing that only the single user is online. I know I can do this via the server console, but I'd rather have a non-super user be able to do this. Since nearly all navigation in this database is scripted, I thought of s…

I haven't pinpointed the problem but here's the circumstances. I'm running FMS8v2 on Mac OS X Server 10.4.5 w/plenty of ram and disk space. I'm serving about 60 files to 20 Mac clients running 8v2. I've recently started consolidating some of my files and I believe it's causing the problem. When consolidating I import a table into the main file, fix/add TOs, import scripts, and duplicate layouts. At some point during this process the majority of my 20 client's FMP application totally freezes requiring a 'Force Quit'. I'll have to do some more experimenting to pinpoint what's causing it and I'll report back. In the meantime I was hoping somebody might shed some li…

Open URL Script can't execute on FM7 Files published on FM Server Advance 8 using IWP. My remote PC running Win XPSP2, using IE6.0 Browser, can access the published FM File but cannot execute 'Open URL' Scripts. Using Firefox instead of IE also shows same result. However, if the FM Publishing Engine and FM Server 8 is turned off, and the same FM File is published on the same Remote Server (Win 2003) using the FM File's IWP Sharing turned on, the Open URL Script works just fine. On another PC running similar Win XP OS, does not have this problem with 'Open URL' Scripts published on FM Server 8 Advance. Question is why can't my PC execute FM 'Open URL' scripts on FM Publish…

Here is my challenge: I am not sure if this question belongs here or under Windows Server or Scripting... Does anyone know how to execute a FileMaker script on FM server 8? I have read elsewhere that it can't be done, but I need to find a solution... I want to download data (from another non-FileMaker system using ODBC) on a daily basis. I have written the scripts and it all works fine, on a client (FM 8 advanced). In FileMaker server 8, what actually happens when a file gets opened and "served"? If I specify a script to execute at file opening (in File Options), it looks like the server ignores that. We had found a way to do that in FileMaker 5 s…

Hello - Has anyone successfully set up a FileMaker Server running on Mac OS X that uses external authentication from a Windows domain? I realize that it would be much easier to run FileMaker Server on a Windows server since we have a Windows domain, but I don't have that luxury. The boss wants all new setups to transition to Mac, so I was given a Tiger (10.4.5) server and FMS 8.0v2 (Mac) CDs to work with. I don't think our domain server will change any time in the foreeseeable future, if ever. Following the instructions in the tech brief on External Authentication, I had our domain admin create 3 user groups on the Windows domain for me: fmsadmin, fm-manager…

I have been using FileMaker Pro on a Mac since 1996 so I am well used to it. Since I upgraded to Version 7 I discovered that I needed a new manual. i have bought Schwartz & Cohen's "Bible" and have constructed their tutorial Address Book. When I entered my homepage in a button "Open URL" I found that it would not open any site to which I need to login. Is this usual? Also, I still cannot use Dial Phone as I used to prior to version 6. Why is that, please? Terry

I have read several posts regarding files not opening on FMS 7/8. I have a similar problem. I have been developing many solutions in FMP 7/8 Developer, hosting them on a 7 server (Win 2000 Server SP4). I just upgraded that machine to FMS 8. All but two files opened as normal. One (1.66GB) opened after I opened it in FMP and allowed it to fully open. The remaining file (1 GB) will not open, even saving compressed would not help. The event log shows that the FileMaker Server Helper cannot be started (error1003), but that was FMS7's helper, which I set to manual start. Max Files hosted =30, have 15 now.

I got a new server, running win2003 and FMS 8. Has of today I'm hosting 80 databases with an average of 5 users per database. The most users that I have had at the same time is about 30. I got 2gig of ram. I'm wondering how the system would perform if I had 200+ users logged at the same time. How much ram should I get more for that scenario. Is there a rule that I don't know about (like a terminal server requires 80 megs of ram per users) fo FMS8. Please don't answer has much ram as you can get!!! Fred.

Hi, I have a simple database with some table. One of these tables is called Countries: it contains a list o almost 200 countries. Basically I just tri to order this countries by name: -sortfield.1=name&-sortorder=ascend. Hi, I am having a strange problem with the Server Advanced 8v2 on Mac tower. My main file never passes the consistency check. I have to turn the consistency check off to get it to start up. The log just says that the check failed. I performed a recover on the file and got the same thing. If I put a clone of the file with no data in it, it starts fine. Hi, This question is related to the topic below: http://fmforums.com/forum/showtopic.php?tid/171863/post/185201/hl/scripts+odbc/ Bear with me while I give you a little background on the project: I'm an ASP developer working with a Filemaker developer on a project to build a public website that draws a lot of data from our client's FM database. Whilst I'm pretty experienced with Access and SQL Server, I'm a complete idiot when it comes to Filemaker so the whole project has been a steep learning curve for me. The client's FM database has been migrated to a Windows Server 2003 box running FM7 Server Advanced. We're upgrading to FM8 Server Advanced in…

We are running a cross platform solution of FM 5-6. We have four Mac G4 (400mhz- 1.25Ghz) towers running OS 10.3 and FMS 5.5 and one P4 Server running WIn 2000 Server and FMS 5.5. The problem is with the Macs. While they perform adequately (albeit slow)under OSX, when we try to stop the server using FM Server Config, the dialog box says it is shutting down (and that it may take a few minutes, the server never stops. It can take half an hour or so before we must force quit. It is consistant across all of the Macs. Why is this?

On the Filemaker web site it says that FileMaker Server 8 Advanced is an enhanced version of FileMaker Server 8 that lets administrators securely manage and deploy shared FileMaker Pro 8 and 7 database files over networks, intranets, and the Internet. This leads me to believe that FMSA8 advanced includes the Server 8 software. However the installer I have for advanced only has the FMS 8 Web Publishing Engine installer. Did our boys get the wrong thing? We have Server 8 as well, should I install that first then run the WPE? Sorry if this seems elementary but I'm confused!

Hello, I'm gettin' mad about a new (!) filemaker server 8 strange behaviour.. I jsut installed all the web engine (server v2+ WPE + advanced 8 v1 patch) in a Windows server web edition (i Know this is not the proper version of Windows server for FM 8.. but just go on.. So, I checked the OS version requirements and I founded that the proper version is WS standard edition.. well, we got it too (all pat…

Dear FM Forums, One of the main reasons we want to use Instant Web Publishing is so that we can have a vendor portal. We have thousands of vendors, and we'd like to have an interface where they can login and update some of their information. What are the options for using IWP to give limited access to thousands of users, only a few of which will ever access at a given time, and none of which will ever access the FileMaker solution directly? At first glance, there would seem to be two options: make a FileMaker Account for each vendor that will access the system, or make a generic account that all vendors login with, and implement within the solution a custom set …

I have a number of databases that run across a WAN, using FileMaker Server 8 Advanced. Unfortunately for some users access can be very slow. To make it easier/faster for them to quickly look up an individual record, I would like to encourage them to access the database via IWP. On log-in, I intended to redirect them to a simpler page. But I can seem to find a function within FileMaker that allows my opening script to know if the person has logged on using their browser (or IWP), rather than as an ordinary client. I would have thought there would have been a "Get" function for this purpose. Does anyone know I can identify that the person is using IWP?

I'm using FMPro 5.5 with FMServer 5.5 in a multi-user environment. Making modifications to our application is always a pain, because I have to either make changes and do testing in realtime on the system while it's in use (dangerous, if the changes are at all complex), or I have to isolate a copy of the database files on a computer not connected to the network. I can simply copy the files to my local computer, and then disable the network connection, but the instant I re-enable the network connection, I risk having the application accidently open one of my test files (even though the active copy is already open!) I suppose there's an expensive "Developer's Edit…
