Ok, I'm wondering if someone can help me figure out why this is happening. Maybe I'm just not understanding things properly here. My problems are two fold. I've got a layout and in the body it has fields going down over about 3 pages. They are all sliding up based on all above and I have selected "Also reduce the size of the enclosing part" (obviously to reduce the amount of pages printed for records where those fields are blank) Now if I don't select "Page break after every 1 occurrences" in the part definition for the body I get information from other records sliding up into records they shouldn't ie. fields from record 2 sliding up into record 1. …

Hello everyone! Is it possible to have a Leading Grand Summary contain all the totals for Subsummary Part Break fields? I have 2 Subsummary parts and each has a break field. The first Subsummary Part (Leading) has a break field "Account Number" and the second Subsummary Part (trailing) has a break field of "Department". Hi!I am having a problem with a calculation not working with the layout I need it to work on. I have 2 tables, Player, and Financial. There is a second instance of Financial called "Enter Financial". I have a layout whose primary table is Player. There is a portal where records from financial are listed. I have fields on my "Player Layout" where I enter data in fields from "Enter Financial" which then update my financial fields in the portal. Say in list view you have a field 3 inches wide, is there a simple way or a trick to determine the max characters it will hold while in layout mode to create a calculation field using the left function? I realize this is font and font size dependant. Yes to get what I needed I typed in some test data of 1 2 3 4 5...etc and counted until it wrapped. But to do that for each field...you get the picture I assume. But I have a layout where the field could contain a few characters up to a really long input. I am trying to set up a layout that has a picture with some text to the right of the picture (on the odd numbered pages), but on the next page the text needs to be on the left and the picture on the right(on the even numbered pages) ie if you imagine a duplex book the text is always on the outside edge of the page. B) I have just loaded FileMaker Pro 8.5 and find that the custom label option is greyed out. I met this problem way back in V5.5. The solution then was to manually copy the labels folder from the installation disk to the programme folder on my hard drive. I've tried this with 8.5 and it doesn't work. Any ideas on how I can get my custom labels back? B)

Hi I'm using FM 6.0v4. I have a label layout which is for most of its fields (except the name of the contact) using fields from a core (common) file of shared in formation in a relational database. The print preview of the labels looks fine but when I print it it breaks some lines in the middle and inserts the end of these in a new line like so. I have seen a technique before where a developer is able to essentially lock a user out from closing a window. I have an application where i have a secondary window pop up for some data entry. Hello, The database I am working on now contains information for our gallery items. Each gallery item belongs to a specific collection, which is usually named after the donor. What I want to do is run a report where I can get the subtotal of each collection, and then a grand total of all the collections added together, so that at any given time I can tell what each collection is worth, and what our total collection value is. I created a field called Total_Value which is a summary field that takes the total summary of each item's value. Hello, I have a sub-summary part used in a layout that works fine in the preview mode. This is an invoice application and each invoice has several items/per invoice. If I use the browse mode each item is a record rather than in preview each invoice is a record. Consequently, to delete something in the browse mode would require deleting every item on an individual invoice. Instead I need to delete one record that has all the item detail in it like I can do in the preview mode. How do I delete a record while in preview mode? Thanks, Randal

I have tried to Insert Object into a container field but can't get it to work. I am using XP-SP2 and FM 8.5 Advanced. I create the container field an then Insert Object, Create from File, file is C:test.doc, Select Display as Icon, select Icon, click OK. I do not get an Icon I only get the words "Microsoft Word Document" displayed in the container. If I double click on it it will open the correct document but only in Layout mode not in Browse mode. I have a text field in each record for users to enter comments into. I want it to be a certain font/size. I use a FM database to keep track of sales where I work. I also do the billing, and use an invoice template I created myself. On this template, there's a repeating field, "Item Description" where the items' names go. I can enter up to 20 items on one invoice. I don't know how to report this data. I keep running into problems because of the repeating value fields. What I've ended up doing is importing the records into another similar file. I break them into individual records on import, then run a report from there. Since all records hold only one value, the report comes out accurate with summary fields. Hello, Another newbie question for everyone… I have been messing around with this problem but it has me confused. I have a db with lets say 12 fields on my layout (old db)…I then make an update to the db and add 2 new fields to the layout (new db). I now need to update the new db with data from the old one. I have tried to use “Import Records / File” but it seems that any field that I have a calculation in does not transfer. Can someone shed some light on this, I cant find any post which describes this in newbie terms:…what are other problems I need to look out for when attempting to move data over to the new db? On the main layout of my database I have a printer icon that is clicked on to print. Is there a way to create some type of popup menu or selection menu that appears with print options to choose from then either the mouse hovers over the icon or the icon is clicked? Hi I am stuck here. I have a few nice layouts for my database... in the header area I created buttons (New, Delete, Search, Show all) and tabs (to switch between layouts) to make it easy for the people in my office to use. However, the buttons seem to print when I go to print a record. Is there anyway to have my buttons and tabs on screen and then NOT have them show up when printing? I imagine there must be a way to NOT have the info in the header to print? I hope its just a matter of me not being able to find it. Jared

I'm trying to get a graphic element (arrow) into a container field (gSortSeqFlagAsc), but I need the container field to have a transparent background. The graphic is native FMP lines grouped together, but when I copy it to paste into the container, I get a rectangular shape with a non-transparent background. I cannot figure out how to do this. Hello all, I have a large layout in filemaker that has around 2 million records. I often use this layout to search for particular weeks and items using the find mode. Is there a way I can add something to the laout that would give total for a search? i.e. If I search for week 20, I would like a total for each feild (total sales, total units) for that one week (or however else I filtered the data. Does anyone know about cross platform font issues? In particular I am using Verdana, which is a completely cross-platform font. FINDINGS: When using sizes under 10 - fonts are fuzzy. Radio boxes are in different possitions when using the applicaiton cross platform. Also... I have seen someone use the "Use System Formats", which is a US/UK format reset. However when set on a text field it smoothes the fonts. Does anyone have any Ideas on how to use this, when it gets greyed out.

I've got a problem that keeps popping us as I work on redesigning some of my layouts using FileMaker Tabs. I design the layouts on a Mac and put colored FileMaker buttons with the title of the tab in them over the active title tab to help the user identify just which tab they are in. I then move the files over to my Windows Server 2003 machine to test them out there and I find a lot of the tab covers no longer cover the tabs so I adjust them there adding a pixel or two to their width and maybe move them over side to side to get them to line up again. Here's the deal. We are Landscape Architects and use FM to run the office. And one of the solutions is called 'Plant Data Base'. Within PDB there is a layout called 'Plant List' which is, of course, a list of specified plants for a particular project. We print this list to PDF and then we paste it into our drawings set. each sheet in this set is the normal architectural size, 24" x 26". The plant list is simply placed on the appropriate page. A few years ago I was quite proficient in setting up basic databases in FM 3 for the Mac. As I recall, to move a field or its label in layout mode, all I had to do was click and drag. I haven't used FM in a while but needed to make a db now, and still have FM3 but using it on newer macs. It runs in the old OS 9. NOW when I click and drag on a field or label in layout mode, it duplicates the selection and moves the duplicate--though not exactly to where I put it. Am I missing something in the preferences/settings? Is this an artifact of using an old application on a newer computer? Have I totally lost my mind and forgotten how to move a field? I'll be upgr…

I am creating a database to track scientific instrumentation. Many items require a yearly calibration and it is important to keep records of previous years results. I wish to place the cal sheets as individual PDF's in container fields. Do I have to create multiple containers manually and then populate with files or is there a technique to do this automatically ?. This idea will be used for equipment photographs as well. I guess another way would be to create a scrolling text box that has each line as a link to an image, PDF etc. However I have not seen any facility for adding this type of format to text.

I have an application that is somewhat inverted: The normal view is the summary, but I want to click on things to get more detail. I've built a database for orienteering. Is there a way for me to center my layout and still stay within the printing margins? I've accepted the fact that I need to stay within the 8 x 11 boundaries for printing purposes, but it sure drives me crazy when working in the database and my database is shoved to the left while I have a huge margin of empty area to the right of the center. I would like for it to be dead center in the middle of the screen. Thanks for your help.

Is there a method of executing a script for printing labels from a layout served via the IWP? Printing direct is out because it's essentially a web page, but a script? Is this possible? I'm still a newbie to FMP and am struggling with the page breaks. I work on a 19" wide screen set to 1440 x 900. So of course I have designed our database interface to take advantage of the extra screen space. The problem is my interface does not fall within the 8 x 11 page FMP has given me to work with. So when I print, instead of it being on one page, it is split between two pages. I have searched the forums, gone through the FMP men options and just can't seem to find a setting to change the page breaks. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Hello, Here is what I am sure is another simple newbie question, but I just cant figure it out. I have a layout with a date field and about 25 fields each one containing a number. EX: Date: 01/13/2007 Field 1: 2 Field 2: 55 Field 3: 8 Etc. When a new record is created the date field is automatically entered. So now I have a date field and 25 fields containing numbers. Does anyone know how I can get this effect(highlighted on "invoice")? The Invoice Pic is just some generic pic found on the web. The Preveiew is what my form looks like. I have the description field set to slide as needed and works quite well I just think the seperators make it look more professional. The description can be 1 to 20 or more lines of text. My company makes unique parts and each requires a little different wording. Sometimes there is only 1 line item, sometimes as many as 20. Page margins for A4 In layout mode FM shows the page for A4 205 X 270mm but every printer has sizes for A4 210X297mm. This makes the document to be printed in less area of the paper. I tried to fix page margins of the layout printing but the mistake is regard to the dimensions of the paper not of the page. I suppose that FM takes the dimensions of the paper the printer gives not its dimensions. Any help please... Pascal

I don't know if I'm pushing the capabilities of FileMaker but it appears so. Is there a limit the number of layouts you can create? I'm trying to simply copy and paste components in different layouts and the spinning beachball is spinning for a good 30 seconds each time (sometimes longer). I've tried cranking the memory allotment way up (256MB). Performance is only slightly better in 8.5 vs. 8.0 I have a ton of relationships and over 170 layouts. I just tried to copy a simple box, nothing more, and the beachball just sits there spinning away. I checked the performance stats in Activity Viewer (Mac OS X) and it is showing a huge amount of processor activity. …

Sometime the list looks just as I have all the fields defined and organized in the custom order I have in Define database window but other times the list is all discombobulated. We're rolling out 8.5 to our clients and have discovered that automated print scripts that worked in 8.0 no longer work in 8.5. Clients are using Zebra and Dymo printers. When comparing the two, preview of the label looks and prints fine in 8.0. In 8.5 it's totally hosed and won't print correct (FM is fairly close to previewing what will print). Has anyone else experienced this? How did you fix it?

How do I go about increasing the list of known fonts FileMaker recognizes on a particular machine? I have one computer that has all the fonts in its fonts folder that were used in creating the layouts in one of our systems. However, FM only lists 3 fonts it recognizes. Oddly, the layouts look fine as FM subs for one of the fonts it knows. The problem lies in printing. IF Fm doesn't have the font it prints meanignless garbled messes. Any ideas on how to add more fonts the the FM list? Thank you.

Hi there, Does anyone know of a way to abort the closing of a file when the user closes the file's last open window? If they close their last open window accidentally, I want to provide an opportunity to cancel shutdown and restart the application. I have a Shutdown script that's performed automatically when Closing the file. Cancelling the Shutdown script (and performing a Restart script) is no problem, but the file continues closing once the Restart script is finished. Is there anyway to stop the file from closing? I tried making a report by duplicating the layout and making it viewable as a list but instead of consecutive rows of data on the one layout I get each record on an individual layout. Is there a way to import a layout into the layout themes that are available in the New/Layout Report option? What I want is a columnar report using the custom layout that lists consecutive rows of data and has a summary field on the bottom. ANy advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, I am not quite a newbie, but have a pretty simple question for most of you here. I have revamped the FMP Business Productivity Solution to suit my business. I have been able to change ALL but one thing, and cannot figure it out. When in the sales orders section, I select an invoice, and click sales invoice, which runs a script to report the Sales Invoice, but on the sales invoice there is still a Generic place holder, at the top that says, "COMPANY NAME & LOGO", "Company Address - Phone - Fax - Email. I have searched all over for a place to edit this, I cannot go to Layout mode, as it is in the middle of a script, and the only place to go from here …

Hi, I have a field for a person height, and I have attempted to convert a persons height from: 610 to 6'10" or 63 to 6'3" I can get the first sign for the feet (') but I cant get the inch sign (") to set properly it keeps adding the first number to the end. FMP V6.04 I like to create a button that by clicking it would copy 8 fields (all address details of a client) so I can paste it in to another document. I am not sure how to go about this. Do I need to write a script, and if so does anybody have a sample as I am not sure how to go about it. Alternatively I can think of creating a layout like an envelope and copy it from there. However I ma not sure ho to do this either so I do not have to leave the record in order to do this. In other words I would like a user to only have to click one button to perform the whole copy routine. Thanks for your help

I am using an email script to have FMP 6 send an email via Microsoft Entourage. In my signature in Microsoft Entourage I have a pic. However if I use the script Microsoft Entourage produces an email without my picture in the signature. Any tips? Second problem is that it puts the new email in the drafts folder; I would like it to open the email and leave the new mail open. Any tricks for this? Thanks

Is there any way to acheive tight vertical line spacing on printed reports with FileMaker? I've tried both normal fields and merge fields without success, yet the line spacing for a plain text block can be set to less than one line (e.g., line spacing = .7) and receive the desired result. As my example file shows, setting a normal field to less than the font's default causes descenders to be cut off. Can anyone suggest another approach to try (short of a calculated field that tries to combine hundreds of lines into a single field)? Thanks for any help. LineSpaceTest.fp7.ZIP

FMP V6.04 I would like to create a button that would dial a telephone number over the speaker of my computer, so that I could hold my phone in front of it and as such dial the number. Howdy, howdy... I have a run-time solution with a script that takes users to a splash screen/EULA agreement (see attached). The problem is, with the script as written (also attached), users can simply click on the Continue button in the Status Area as well as blow past the screen by selecting a different layout. What I'd like to do is take the users to the EULA screen where they'll be forced to click on either the "I agree" or "I disagree" buttons, then they'll be handed-off to the next script. Hi, Brand new to FM. I probably don't even know the terminology well enough to ask a question in a way that can be understood, so I'd appreciate your patience as well as any advice. I'm sure there's a simple way to get around this problem, but I haven't seen it. I have a text field on a layout that has to be filled in. In my educational database I have many student records and many other tables with school elements. I need to create a special layout from fields from different tables to make an autocomplete certificate or a perfomance paper. I wonder if I should create a particular table with fields from all related tables. Does anyone have to suggest a respectable solution to this problem? I really have a problem because portals or like that in such a layout do not work at all. Certificates also do not need a portal but many fields from different tables...I am confused. Pascal Help!

I am almost done with this project. It has been a year and you guys have helped me out a lot. I have one more question. I have a created a group data report that lists the workflow (design, production and design/production), relevant information for each record in that workflow, then the subtotal for the workflow. Hello, How can I force a field to retain the font size, style, and formatting that i've set it to? Users are able to override this and change the font when they enter data, but I don't want them to be able to do that. For example, they'll cut and paste from a Word document and my pretty Arial 10pt field will suddenly have Times New Roman 12pt text in it. Is there a calculation or something I can do to the field so that it re-sets the field's text formatting or simply ignores any formatting that the user tries to do? Thanks in advance, Frank

Hi, I am a beginner in filemaker programming. I am trying to achieve the following: In a layout, the user will enter a record number (eg: 0001, 0002, 0003)and click on a button. Based on the number entered the code in the button should connect to an Oracle db using ODBC, get the required values from the selected record and create a record in filemaker db. So, if I enter an employee number and click the button in the layout, the employee name, salary, age etc. should be populated in the layout. How can I achieve this. Hi Folks, I am a newbie to the Forum and FMP. Find it more user friendly than Access . I have a very simple request for help (well I thnik so) I have managed to import to my database from excel all the membership info of my Club. I have designed a resonable layout, and have managed to place a couple of buttons, now this is where I am stumped. I wish to assign a script to one of the buttons for a [color:red]Surname search. ie click on button blank window pops up type in surname looking for, enter and it goes to first one found, also click other button to scroll through all other names matching the search criteria. I did not see any program on their site which would allow this feature. How did they get that there? Ok, I’m lost as an Easter egg on this one. This is kind of a layout question so I will post it here. I have a report that can be printed two ways…either by button 1”All Hours” or by button 2 hours “By Year” for an individual. The “All Hours” of the report I have in place and prints great. Now to my question: if the user selects button 2 to print the hours “By Year” I am attempting to have something in place so that they can select a drop-down to reflect the year they wish, and the report will print all hours of the report for that selected year. Hello everyone. I'm having a problem with a set of radio buttons on my layout. I have a field that is configured to be a radio button field with three options. The field works fine and sets the value based on the selection. My question is that the radio button doesn't "fill." You click on the button but it doesn't turn black or show what you selected. Hi This is my query. I have a button on LAYOUT A to create a new project. When this button is pressed, the script takes you to LAYOUT B and creates a new record(Project) for you. After creating, it goes to the first record and shows that one instead of the newly created record. I added GO TO Record LAST in Script step and it does that but after the step is completed, it goes back to record 1. This is really driving me crazy. I do have a commit record after New Record request. Any help would be very welcome... Thanx

Hi there, I'm building a task management database, and have hit a problem with using tabs on the layout. What I want is to have seven tabs, showing the upcoming seven days, letting the user flick between them and see what tasks lie ahead for them. I'd like to have the names of the days on the tabs themselves, but this needs to change dynamically. So on Monday the first tab says Tuesday, next one says Wednesday. On Thursday the first tab would say Friday, second Saturday etc. The problem is that using Filemaker 8s built in tabs layout tool thingy, it seems that the tabs can only have basic text names. Hi. New to this forum. Thanks for having me. I've learned lots of useful stuff so far. I have a very frustrating problem and one that's vital to the success of a current project. Basically I have a bunch of records that need to be printed out in a report that looks exactly like a pre-existing MS Word document. The information is contained in a table with 1pt borders for all of the rows/columns/cells. I have a layout with a title header, regular header, body and footer. Everything in the body is sliding up and slides great! But no matter what... it always seems to print two pages. Anybody think of a reason why it would do that? Is there something I have to do to the body so that it doesn't always show 2 pages even if all the data has moved to the first page? Is there a way to show/hide an item on a layout based on given criteria? For instance, in our system there are times when we print a different invoice for the customer based on actual items on that invoice. We have a script that prints off an invoice and runs through If/Then check to see what items are on the invoice and decides which layout to use to print the invoice. I'd like to the same type of thing with actual items on a layout. If I create a button on a layout, but I only want that button to show up if the field Auction_Status = 'Current' for example. Any information on how I could do this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm a FileMaker newbie with Access experience. I'm trying to set up a reporting menu where the user can specify the criteria to filter records by and some other data to use on the report. On the main data layout, there is a portal and that is one of the fields by which records can be selected for reporting. Using a script, I have managed to get into Find mode and insert some data from the reporting layout into the field on the main data layout BUT it is the field name from the reporting layout, rather than the contents of that field. What's the magic characters I have to add, please?
