Importing & Exporting

Getting data in and out of FileMaker.

  1. Started by Bundles,

I am trying to import from XML using the basic msdso_elem.xslt style sheet I came across. Things work well if all field names remain the same in the XML. I have a script that automatically imports from the URL using that stylesheet. The problem is in mapping fields: One record in the XML contains 20 fields, the last two, desciption1 and description2 my not be on the next record, but description3 and description4 are there instead. I have in my filemaker database, all four of these fields that need to be properly mapped to automatically. My question is what do I need to do change in the stylesheet to propely translate all field names in the xml to to …

When a PDF file is inserted into container field, using Insert File, the field will show a generic icon together with the name of the file. When a large thumbnail of the PDF file is required for a 'quick look' on the layout, then the PDF is inserted using Insert Picture. My normal approach, erring conservatively in the absence of information, has been to use 2 container fields, one for the Insert File, One Insert Picture for the thumbnail. This does double the data size however; as might be expected. Not an unacceptable issue, but is it avoidable? Curiously if the field content is exported from either the InsertFile or InsertPicture then the resul…

The problem is that any field of a record that is changed goes to the same column. So there might be three lines in excel for the same person with each of the field changes in the same column. The column was origianlly formated as text, since I did not want filemaker to remove the end digits (rounding off zeros in the decimal places). However, now, filemaker seems to be randomly rounding those numbers up or down, meaning that, for example, the photo labled 5.0140 is now 5.013999999999999 and the photo labeled 5.0141 is now labeled 5.0141000000000002. Looking for some guidance on migrating data out of Maximizer, preparing it for import into FMP9. The tab-delimited text files the client supplied have data running all over the place. It has the appearance of repeating fields dumped into succeeding records. Actually much messier than that. Given the situation I will probably be visiting the client soon to see just what's going on and attempt to discover how Maximizer exports its data. I'm hoping I can gain some guidance in advance of that visit. Appreciated.

I've read a few threads on this site that talk about the difficulty of setting up import mapping. Well, it's more like ranting. Nobody, however, has addressed how to make it easier. When mapping fields, the target field you move up or down in the order swaps its position with the field that it is replacing. For instance, if I move a field in the 50th position in the target field list to the 2nd position, the field that was #2 is now #50. This is horrendously difficult especially in those cases where most of your fields are off by one or two positions but you have to move some lower down field up. I know I'm not explaining this very well but I expect everyone…
