Importing & Exporting

Just wondered if it was possible to export records from one database and then import them as find requests in another database. I would then have the same set of records showing in both databases as a result of the find.

Hi, Does anyone know if this is a bug or if there is any workaround for this problem: I have a database with Chinese characters in various fields. When saving the record as PDF, the Chinese text show up as boxes. I am using a Windows XP and FileMaker Pro 11 Advanced. Does anyone know how to get the .olm or .mbox email archives created in Mac Outlook 2011 imported into a Filemaker database? I'm just getting started on a new MacBook Pro after years of being a PC. I've grown to depend on a system I set up to export a folder of emails from Outlook to a .csv file, then import it into a Filemaker file linked to my main database by the email address. I found this was the quickest way to read/reply emails about a project, then log any related data into my database. Hey, I am going to start an archive database where I am scanning my companies old paper documents using a BIZ HUB scanner... which makes the files pretty large. What are your thoughts on storing these files as reference vs. natively inside the database. Here are my thoughts: FOR: All files are in one place AGAINST: The database file size will be HUGE FOR: If I store as reference, if the files are moved and the "link is broken", won't that be a disaster? I need to output a text file in a format that looks like: "","name","email","1","0","" where all the quote marks, as above, are required in the output and the names, emails and flags are pulled from an xls file into the database with appropriately named fields. I have an export field that joins the whole lot together. I ran into a lot of problems with escaping quotes and have achieved a result by using a bullet character for the quotes and, as the last step in a script, find/replace all the bullets with quotes. Although it works, it seems a bit clunky. What do you reckon? cheers Roger

I'm trying to write a script to create a webpage file with some php in it. I'm constructing all the code for this webpage in a script in FileMaker which saves to a text field then uses "export field contents" to write the code to a file on my web server. Everything seems to work great, but the php code in the webpage does not seem to work. When I "view source" on the webpage and compare it a php file that I built from scratch, it looks identical except the php does not seem to have compiled in the version of the file that was exported from FileMaker. I have to develop a FM solution that uses the online services of UPS and FedEx to validate addresses, calculate shipping costs, submit shipments, and track packages. I am well versed in PHP and have worked with FM for a few years now. I am new to using online web services, however, and I could use a few pointers to get started. I am thinking of purchasing FM11 pro but have a couple of issues 1st. I have about 40k files in excel format, which I would like to import to FM. Issue 1: lets say SOMETIMES cell A1 has "Name" and cell A2 has "Jim" thenA3 has"address". OTHER TIMES "Name" will appear in cell B6 and Cell B7 has "jim" and B8 has "james" b/c he goes by 2 names. Hey I just started a new data entry job where we take a lot of data from SEC filings and put them in our tables in FP. Hi, I'm trying to display filemaker database through Excel pivot tables. I have set up an ODBC connection that seems to be working fine. But the problem seems to be that it works only when the FIlemaker file is open. When I open the Excel file with the FM file closed, Excel crashes and the pivot does not work. Hello, I'm tasked with regularly grabbing some data out of a remote Filemaker database and importing it into a different system in house. The remote database is running FM 9 and we have several FM client licenses that are version 10 and 11. So far the best way I can find to do this is through a script in Filemaker. I am trying to import full data from Access / SQL server database into File Maker. I am loosing sleeps when I think about importing the entire data into FileMaker. The Access / SQL server database table relationship is different from filemaker table relationship. We have been manually updating our shipping log, which is a lot of redundant work, so I am automating it via php scripts. My issue is that I need the pre-existing data in the empty MySql db. Here is my problem: I am currently importing ~3 million records from a text file. Each record has lots of qualitative fields, let's call them A, B and C, and several numerical values, lets call them X, Y and Z. Hello, I am importing orders from my online cart solution into filemaker. There are two fields that come from my online cart solution called comment and internalcomment. I wish for both of these fields to be imported into the same filemaker field. Is this possible in some way? Creating a filemaker field for both is not an option since I need both of these values to appear in the same field. I have not been able to think of a way to make this work.

Hi - I realise that this may be an XSL specific question more so than Filemaker but I am a beginner with XSL and have spent hours googling for a solution and I am getting desperate. I export records to an xls file which is then parsed by the browser - all works fine except that not all records have a valid entry in every field. Hello, I am new to FM and having some difficulty with combining data. This is my issue... I am importing my orders from a csv file into my FM database. The CSV file has 3 to 4 rows of information (attribute options) for the same product. How do I make one record of the product with all the attribute options? Dear friends, I am facing a problem while importing the records from a very large excel file. It has almost more than 60,000 row of data in it. After importing the records, the application responses very slowly, while fetching data, in case filter data, records fetched on the basis of some calculation or condition makes the application very slow, it is working in seconds (10-20 seconds) for a single task. I am creating a simple database for a printer friend of mine to track his click charges for his digital printer. The printer front end can export a delimited text file. The file is delimited by a pipe (|) and I see no way to specify this delimiter in Filemaker so we are making a trip into Excel to obtain an importable file. Their date exports as: " February 25, 2011 1:40:53 PM CST " (Notice the leading and extra spaces)... Any ideas for converting this into a valid Filemaker date field? Hi I work on Filemaker Pro databases at work - sorry not sure which version but they are quite old now. We have just had a new server and have been told that we cannot work on our old databases as they aren't compatible with the server. We now have the new server but we've found out we can still access our databases and can still do searches on them etc. However, the databases on each computer aren't linked up as when someone edits their copy the rest of the copies aren't updated. Can someone tell me if we can link them up? They still work fine apart from they aren't linked up. Hope all this makes sense. Thank you.

Hi, When dragging an office document into a container, and then trying to open it - it opens a very very small box inside FM and you absulutly see nothing and you have to press escape to exit that mode. why is that? my users are used to dragging files and i don't want to change that. How can these office docs open normally?

This bug has been around since FM 4! Here's what it does: Let's say you create a script that imports data to an FM contact list. You carefully organize the fields so that "First Name" imports to the "First Name" field in your contact list. You save that import order. Later you add a new field to your database, say something like "2nd Email." What happens? The import order changes- everything after the new field "2nd Email" points to the wrong import item. I'm just surprised our friends at Filemaker fixed this and no one seems to be in an uproar- have you noticed? <_<

I know this has been addressed before, but I can't seem to find a "bottom line" answer. When I place a pdf in a container field -- no matter what options I choose -- my database increases in size tremendously. Although I've read about others having this problem, there seems to be no solution other than using something like 360works Supercontainer. Is that the only alternative? Thanks, Kevin

I have a client that is requesting customized excel output from data in FileMaker. Specifically, I'm looking for possible solutions that would allow me to control Excel row height, column height, cell styling (borders, line size, text formatting) etc.. Is this possible? Hi, I found out that if I remove the admin account in a runtime solution then I can't import from another "usr" file although the user has export permissions... Is this true or am I missing something?

My solution requires the daily importation of CSV text files downloaded daily to a sub folder of the solution main folder. Can I make the CSV file names in the sub folder visible on the main menu of my solution so that the users can select the ones they need for importation? I have an Excel with a number of date fields and text fields. When I drag and drop Excel spreadsheets to instantly import into FileMaker Pro, the date field in Excel becomes text field in FileMaker. When I changed it to date field, all the dates become 'garbage' I have to save my Excel into .csv first before doing the import. Is this the only way ?

Viewing the source code manually is not difficult, I just bring up the web page I'm interested in and under Safari's View menu I select View Source ( I am using Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro). I'm running three businesses off three databases that were all originally the same database, just with different data. Over time I've made adjustments to them which has resulted in databases that are similar in how they function, but are no longer identical. I recently did a major update on one database which required new scripts and new fields. I want to implement that update on the two other databases. Is there a way to copy the new fields from a table on the updated database to the two other databases? The table names are the same. Hi Forum, Im trying to type a math formula into a text field like X -to the power of 2- with a "raised" small two after the X. I cant seem to do that. Hi. My client will install a Filemaker Server 11 under Windows Server. The Database hosted on the server will import data from a windows SQL Server (a different computer) regularily into its database with a server side script on the FM Server. Question: Do we need the normal version of Filemaker Server for that or the Filemaker Server ADVANCED version? I'm also planning to do all our cars and parts inventory in there. (We are a car and truck exporter). I have just begun with Quckbooks, it is a lot less flexible than FM even though it provides similar functionality. I want to create invoices in Filemaker but then post payments and partial payments in Quicbooks only for those invoices that get paid. So I have an old database with the field ADDRESS. And a new one with ADDRESS1, ADDRESS2, ADDRESS3 & ADDRESS 4. I need to get the records out of old_database and into shiny_new_database I'm not sure what the best way to go about this is. Would it be to add ADDRESS 1 et al to old_database, then somehow split ADDRESS into the new fields, then import it cleanly into shiny_new_database? I have to access a website that updates its data into individual files every day. "EM012811.xml" "EM012911.xml" ... I've got 2 questions. First, the website is password protected. I have the username and password and can download the files, but I can't find a way to use an import function that allows me to pass the username/password to the website from Filemaker. Is there a way to do this? Second, when I download the file "EM012811.xml" to my harddrive, Filemaker is unable to open it as an XML file. Not really sure if this belongs here or not. I am importing references to pdf files and have a script set to add the files, extract text and copy the text in a context field for indexing. I also have scripts to insert the file size and creation date from the metadata. The problem I have is whoever did the last dvd master of the files "corrupted" the metadata. The pdfs go back to 2000 but when they were compiled into the dvd they somehow changed the create date to 01/19/2006. If I look at the metadata in preview/skim etc the dates are correct for the document but the Finder Get Info shows the 01/19/06 date. I have an Applescript program which read the content of a directory. Each files contained in the directory becomes a record in a FMP table. It is used to fill the Product table. All of this process is done behind the scene in batch. I do have a problem and do not know if there is a solution. In order for all of the information to get loaded in the Product table I must ensure nobody is accessing the file either from via the layout for the Standard form, a Table view and a List View. Help. Recent upgrades to Filemaker, Mac OS and Adobe Software have created a show-stopper of a problem with our Filemaker database. Here's the problem, as succinctly as I can state it: We've been using Filemaker Server/Filemaker Pro as an image catalog for our art department for years, and we have thousands of images and multiple users on Mac and PC platforms. Is it possible to work with FP7 file using the FileMaker ODBC driver (or any other means) without actually needing to have FileMaker installed? I'm not a FileMaker user, but I periodically need to export an FP7 file to another party who uses an FM system. I have a large database that I would like to 'add' data to, not update by replacing. Most of the data will remain the same except for a few fields if a change has happened since the data was originally entered. I know this question may sound silly, but I'm wondering if there is any way to save a FM 9.0 file so that I can open it in FM 6.0 and still retain basic layouts? I can't export to Excel using FM_9 Advanced on my Leopard Mac. The error message states: " cannot be created on this disk. Use a different name, make more room on the disk, unlock it, or use a different disk." I can't "Save as..." using Excel as the file type, either. .pdf exporting is ok. .csv exporting is ok.

I've created a container and have pulled the Bar Codes i.e. the image of the bar code, from a url into FM. I now need to export the images into excel along with their corresponding SKU and UPC Code so that I can send this information off to the factories. Here is my problem; I am new to FileMaker and I have built a solution only by the grace of God and help from forums. The database imports updates from spreadsheets on my Desktop, and it works great on one computer, but if I use it on a different computer I have to edit and map the Desktop file again. The problem is, that I need it to be able to find the file on the Desktop no matter what computer is running the solution. For example; if I gave a copy of this to a friend (assuming he had FileMaker)and he wanted to update it, he could simply click the update button and it would locate and import the UPDATE file on his desktop. We created an Excel file as a demographic data collection tool at a remote site. The data is then imported into FM11 (matching field names with the .xls categories). In FM, we have set up several categories to count the fields with specific data in order to know how many people from X category (county, age group, ethnicity, etc.) accessed the service. I established value lists in Excel so that the data that is imported will match the FM text that is used for the count. Hello, I am not sure if this is the right subforum, but I have a question related to the auto-enter function which has arisen due to the import function in filemaker (11). Basically, I have a very simple database which is just a converted Excel sheet. Each record has an ID number, which has been set to auto-increment by one every time a new record is added. My issue is that new records are added by importing from Excel, and on occasion this has resulted in extra, empty records being made by accident. When I manually go through the motions of importing data from the Contacts table the Source fields appear and I can use Matching Names to import the data--works fine. However... Within the folder containing the database on the host computer is an excel file that frequently gets updated and needs to be imported into the database. I am importing data from an older version of the database. Unfortunately when the new database was created it used the same field for what were in the old database several fields. For example what was in old data::mark, old date::engraving, or old data::illustrated imports to one new field::model. The difference is if the record is type A then mark imports to model, if the record is type B then engraving imports to model,and if the record is type C then illustrated=model. I am struggling with a really strange bug. I export from FileMaker as XML. As near as I can tell, FileMaker defaults to UTF8 in this circumstance, and offers no other choice. I define a MySql database table as UTF8. I write a PHP script which imports the XML from FileMaker and inserts it into the MySql database. I then view the data through a web browser (on an HTML web page where the character encoding has again been declared as UTF8) but i get garbled accents on European names such as "Rhone". I have three tables about colleges and wish to combine them into one table. Each has unique fields, ranging from 60 to 170 or so fields; the key field of each is the same. All the advice I've read says to combine such tables into one table, rather than joining them with one-to-one joins. I'll then do searching and filtering on the table/format. My problem/question is that I have not been able to figure out how to get Filemaker to do this for me. I've read and re-read the documentation and I'm missing something. I know how to combine the tables using Excel and vlookup, but is there a better way using FM capabilities? I have FM 11 Pro, not Advanced.

I have a group excel files with 3 pieces of data for each record, 4 records total. When I import into Filemaker 9, I get the first records data clear, then the other 3 records are missing data. If I try another excel file with more records, say 20, I'll loose the data in the last 3 records sometimes, and sometimes I get all the data. All of the excel files that are being imported are created exactly the same through an export from MS Access program. Before converting from FM 5 to FM 9, it worked perfectly. Any suggestions? I am trying to export my database that contains a container with each record holding an embedded pdf. The pdfs were put into the container by right-clicking on it -> insert object -> Adobe Acrobat document. They are definitely within the Filemaker database file and not just referenced, since the database filesize goes up by 10mb when I add a new record with a 10mb pdf. I need to have an EDIFACT translator in my DB, and I haven't found any Mac software that does this. Hi all, Like the title says. I have a bunch of information in a CSV file that i want to have in my FMP database. About CSV (Also in attachement) First row says only information. Second Row and so on begins Distribution list and users (separated in a own cell) First collumn contains the name of the D.list and one of the usernames. Then each second column has his own user in it. When I import, it only wants to import the first column. Is there a way without conversion or change original csv to import all the users. I would like the client to press a button and have the report without having to have the Print dialog box up, but it seems as though as soon as I Specify Print Options, all those options are taken. I want to be able to specify Current Record or Records Being Browsed and just have it go to their default printer. My dafult printer (list) is different to theirs so I cannot just set the printer. I am struggling and failing to get all the data out of a FileMaker database. I know MySql, but I do not know FileMaker. In MySql, if I wanted to find every table in a database, I would simply log into the command line and type "Show Tables". Then I would get a list of every table in the database. How do you reset the path to a file referenced in a container field? If a file is moved, or duplicated for client machines of a hosted solution, how do you make the solution file locate the referenced container file.?

I have a script that performs a simple matching names, add new records import script step. The source is a hosted table on a FileMaker server. The target is a table hosted on a different FM server. Whenever a field is deleted from the table in either the source or target (after the import step was setup), the field mapping ends up wrong when running the script. So the information is imported in, but in the wrong field(s). It's like it 'shifts' the fields down one space in the Import Field Mapping screen, for lack of a better description. Hello Is it possible to create, what I will call, a "temporary" field during export. For example, I have a field A which contains numbers and text, let say record 1 contains "980 blabla". When I export this field in a tab separated file, I want this field exploded into two other fields, one containing the number and the other containing the text. I _know_ I'm going to kick myself later for not remembering why this is happening so I'll save some time and will start kicking myself now: Why is the "Save as Excel" icon "grayed out" on the Print Preview toolbar? "Save as PDF" appears all right, so...? I have Full Access privileges so that's not it. However, the icon is grayed-out while a script is paused (Pause/Resume Script [indefinitely]), but not when changing from Browse mode to Preview mode. TIA for your replies.

We have converted and troubleshoot all the code and most scripts and functionality seem to be functioning correctly. We have 100+ databases, and we are in the importing data stage.
