Hi I have a layout with Header,Body,Footer and Title Footer. I'm trying to isert a picture to be printed on this layout placed inside the Footer area. It just doesn't print it! I can see it in "browse mode" but not in "preview mode" and so doesn't print it at all. Any hints? Images can't be placed in the footer? Any reply is appreciated.

(Filemaker 6) We have a "Clients.fp5" file, and it has a "Client Name" and a "Client ID" field (along with lots of other Client information). In a different file, the user wants to be able to type in a Client ID, and have all the other information, including Client Name, be looked up. If they don't know the Client ID, they want to be able to select from a dropdown list of Client Names, and have all the other Client information, including Client ID, be looked up. The only solution I can think of is a complicated one that I don't want to saddle them with, after I am gone. Does anyone have a simple way of doing this?

I'm setting up a columnar report in the layout mode. I'm using the report to view info not to print anything. I'm trying to move some fields to the right to give myself more room on the report but every time I do they revert back to where they were. I've tried adjusting the right margin but that doesn't seem to help. Any advice would be appreciated.

I know this is kind of a speciallized question, but I thought this was the most likely place to get an answer. I don't know if it even possible, but I want to export Filemaker data to a graphics program to automatically build simple figures, specifically geologic cross-sections and columns. This may be more of an issue with finding a graphics program that allows macro-like functions. Can anyone provide some advice? Thanks

I have a field that goes to multiple pages. I run into one of these 2 problems. 1 - First page of data doesn't print, just a blank page. Rest of pages are fine. 2 - All pages print but lines are cut in half and it prints on top of the Header and Footer. I've tried changing sizes of everything, just doesn't work. I think printing from FM is turning into the most difficult task I've had with it.

I am making a database that budgets for a fiscal year. I open to a DEPARTMENT layout and I have set up to show only purchases in that department. I have additional field in the "purchases" table that indicates which fiscal year that purchase was made. (2004-05, 2005-06, etc) How can I tell FM7 to only show the CURRENT fiscal year in that portal. I know it can be done, there are too many cool little tools in here. when i set up a portal to multiple records, i tried to set the whole portal as a button that when you click on it will perform GoToPortalRow{Select; Next}. However, as soon as I save changes and go into Browse mode, when i click on it nothing happens. I tried changing the parameters to be GoToPortalRow{Next} and even GoToPortalRow{Select; Last} nothing ever changes...all it does is highlight the field. also, i have it mouse over to become a hand, so i'm sure i'm not just clicking on the field part and not the button

In MS Access when you got to the last field in the record and then pressed <tab> it would take you to the next (new) entry. In FM P it takes you to the beginning of the same record. How can you make <tab> take you to a a new record?

I have 2 files. File A and B. File A has a portal row with related fields in fields B. I'm trying to set it up so that I can go from a field in a record in file B and want to go to that portal row in file A. I use a script button in the portal row to get from file A to File B where something happens and i'm trying to get back to the same spot where I executed the script (same portal row). I'm able to get back to the correct record in file A but want to be dropped off in the portal row field that I clicked on to execute the original script. This is for development in IWP. I have a report using a portal (because of the 5 record limit for list view) that needs to be printed out. However you are only able to print as much as the portal displays on screen. Is there a way to dynamically increase/decrease the portal rows so they match the number of records in the table? ok, this is my third forum, because this problem has been throwing me everywhere. I'm creating a computer inventory. The design specification is one rown, one computer. The person also wants to view all jobs done on the computer by the IT department. I set up a portal to show the related fields for jobs done, however there are two problems. 1) The portal forces me to list jobs in rows, rather than separate columns. Is there anyway to customize the portal to add new columns instead of rows? Or would it be more convenient to just create 4 or 5 portals and have whoever maintains the database add these on? hello, i'm strugeling with this for a few days now, and i can't seem to get the result i want. I'm pretty new to FM, so explain in detail (I have read a few posts about this topic, but i don't understand them). I'm wording in FM7 situation, I have a table with company's, one of the fields is 'status' with can be (suspect, prospect, client, past). Hi all: I'm working on a calendar layout which uses a separate portal for the day of the week. At the bottom is an area for details of the current item. I'm capturing the portal row of the selected item via a global, so that the item will remain highlighted via go to portal row. However, regardless of which portal the item is in (which portal was clicked in to trigger the script) the highlighting always occurs in the first portal. Is there any way to indicate which portal I am referring to when I call Go To Portal Row? thanks in advance -Stanley

Hi Folks, Creating and using portals... I want a portal to do exactly what "Table View" does (don't ask why), so I go into relationship view, pick my table and drag a key field (ID) back onto itself (self-join). Then in layout mode, I assign my layout to use the new table, but refering to the fields in the old table (seems to be the way to get it to work). The portal looks pretty and adds to a feeling of euphoria, but both "Find" and "Sort" seem to do nothing. "Find" returns all records whatever you enter in the fields and "Sort" sorts it exactly as it already is. Any ideas :

I've created a new layout for a report, and at first it displayed info in any of the four Views (Layout, Browse, Find, or Preview). Now, when I go to look at it, each layout is completely blank -- except for Preview, which displays the report. I want to make some changes to Find criteria, and also to the layout itself, but I can't, because there's nothing appearing on the screen! How can this happen? Hi, It appears that when using IWP, the option to have a pop-up menu include the "other" option (whereby one can enter something that is not on the list) doesn't work. The line in the menu that has "other" (in FM) is present but blank in the web version, and if you select it, all that happens is that the field data is set to empty. I would expect a pop-up window to appear as in FM. Using a pop-up list, rather than menu, which in FM allows you to type directly in the field, also doesn't work because on the web it also behaves as a menu. Is this a known limitation of IWP? does anyone know of a workaround? Gareth

I really need some help on this one - I don't even know where to start. I have an issues table - for each issue a certain discipline is selected (Mechanical, Electrical, etc.) and the report that prints out of all the issues sorts by discipline. Now the company wants any one issue to be able to be in multiple disciplines. So if an issue is defined as electrical and mechanical, it will show up once in the mechanical part of the report and again in the electrical, without actually having to have more than one record for the issue. Hi. How can I display multiple record fields on one page, like in table view, yet also be able to customize it, like in form view? I have a portal that is showing me the related records that I have requested from specific table/s. Each portal row shows me three things, a User_Name, Object_ID, and Object_Description. I need to be able to create a new record in a different table based on the Object_ID or the portal row that is selected. I've tried a few things with the Get(PortalRowNumber) function. Like using the row number to fill in the contents field that show the Object_ID of the row selected, but either i don't know how to get that to happen or it doesn't work. The first portal shows items that have been quoted for an installation and the other shows 'over run' items which were neccessary in order to complete the job. I want to be able to collate these items from both portals and incorporate them into a new quote which will then be more accurate for future quotes for similar installations. I have an unusual portal based on a constant relationship (a calc field containing a "one" across all records in both databases). I went this way because my related database has no record ID, and I always want all records to show in the portal. The portal is listing names given to custom lists generated from an inventory database. I would like to see the portal sort by these names. However, in relationship definition, I can't choose a sort field. I select, click "OK", and it doesn't "take." I presume this is due to the contstant relationship. I have a solutions where I created a portal to show duplicate records, records that have the same name. We use this to determine different version of master recording. It allows us to see what is a duplicate vs. just another version. My problem is I have the portal sorting by song title and it constantly resorts. I have a button/script in the portal that takes you to the related record so you can see more of the data about that song. When you click on the button the portal resorts. Does anyone have an example or quick explanation for the Initial row setting in FM7 portal setup. I can't think of a reason why you would want to permanently filter the initial rows of portal. I can see if you can set this variable on the fly via a design function it would be helpfull in some cases to reduce the portal size. Just curious Rod

For a class-enrollment application, I've got a set of classes that sometimes have multiple teachers and always have multiple students, i.e. two many-to-many relationships with join tables. One of the requirements is for a grouped-data report that's supposed to look basically like this: sub-summary by teacher - sub-summary by class (each teacher has four) -- list of enrolled students (5-20) The goal is to get a big report that can be broken out into a printout for each teacher listing the students in each of their four classes. I have several numbered lists of information that are value lists in my database. When the popup lists are displayed in any given field, they by default are alphabetized resulting in out-of-sequence numbering: 1. Item 1 10. Item 10 11. Item 11 12. Item 12 2. Item 2 3. Item 3 4. I am new to Filemaker Pro7 and have a couple of trivial (I hope) questions. 1. When you click on a "popup list" and select an item from it, Filemaker automatically sends you to the next tab item. I am at the end of my wits. I have three related tables in my main database. On three separate layouts are portals relating to one of these tables. Two of them work fine. The third one, which seems completely identical, does not show any of the fields in Browse mode. I think it's only since the update 7.0v2 that I've found one of my portals to complain, when I go to a blank portal row and try to input data for a new related record: "This operation cannot be performed because one or more required related records are not avilable and cannot be created." Yet, on *every* occasion, a second try succeeds. So, my data entry in each portal row now involves the extra step of clearing this dialogue and re-entering the data for the initial field in the new row. I've been tring to sort reports based upon the contents of a field that the user selects (checkbox set). I started by saving various 'sort records [restore]' scripts but after typing over 100 scripts from the possible combination of 512 I got fed up and visited fmForoums. My FM7 database has several tables and reports (layouts).One layout is the "main panel" with buttons for invoking specific reports. For some of the reports, I'd like to be able to specify the Find criteria (such as a date-range like yyyy.mm.dd...yyyy.mm.dd) and other selection criteria values at the time I request the report, without having to get into the cumbersome Find Mode screen (which I know can be displayed with a script command). The selection criteria may include both AND and OR conditions, and involve one or more fields. Is there a more elegant (and "foolproof") way to achieve this on the "main" or a "sub" panel?____

Hi, I have a columnar/list report containig three fields while field 1 is always only one line, the fields 2 and 3 may contain one to four lines. To save space I would like to use sliding, but i would like the three fields to slide together and assume the hight of the hightest box (the one with the most lines) eg. if the box with the most lines contains three lines all boxes are 3 lines high. I have a form that is filled out via the web in Filemaker. There is a place for 4 separate text comments. Since I never know how long the comments might be, the Filemaker layout has a single text box with MERGE FIELDS (like <<Comment1>>) so the comments flow nicely. The problem is that some users have exceeded the normal length of a comment which resulted in the last comment being cut off in many cases, So, I decided to add a second page to the layout (I just slid the body downward) and made the comment text box longer. Anyone else notice that the Size box in layout mode list the demensions in the order or Width and Heigth, but the Window scripts to sepcify the demensions are in Heigth/Width. I know this of course.. but it never fials, everytime I go to use the little object size tool to estimate a window size, I get it backwards when I enter it into the script! ..funny how the more powerful and improved an application gets, the more we complain about the little things..

I've got two files, customer and accounts, with a relationship between CustID in each file. The portal in Customer shows all related accounts based on this relationship, and displays only the relevant accounts for that customer. I made a button for the account field to display that specific account for more detail, but regardless of which row in the portal I click, it shows the first record of all that customer's accounts. I want to go directly to the specific record in the portal row that I click. Can this be accomplished?

Hi I am having problems with a calculation field in a portal. All my calc is doing is getting a name from a related table, which relates to an ID number in the portal. When I update the ID number, the name does not change, however when I switch back and forth to a previous record and back it has updated it. Is there a way of updating calculations in portals?? I phoned UK tech support (some of whom are helpful sometimes) and they dont know what I'm talking about!! BTW this works fine when not in a portal. Thanks Adam.

My problem is: I have a portal in a (Standards) Master File showing data from a link file between the master File and a related file (Policies) which has "Standard Number" as its match field. Hi everyone, I want to create a report layout, which can display, the number of all active cases for each individual in the database, in a single layout. I have it set up correctly (as far as I know) with a 3rd join table between the two (CitiesServed). I want to know how to enter data in repeating fields using value lists from a related file. In detail - I have two databases - one for invoices with repeated fields for Product Code, Batch No, Rate, Quantity etc. and another one as my Product Master with fields for Product Code, Batch No, Rate etc. and containing multiple records for Product Codes with different Batch Nos. We are in the process of converting our Excel database of calendar information into a Filemaker database which we share between Mac OS 9 and Windows 98 computers. In Excel, we often pulled reports into Word using mail merge, creating 3 column formats that are easy to distribute to the public and our media and academic contacts. We have now set up a layout on FMP to do this, but there are a few kinks we are trying to work out. I had posted this problem before but I am still having problems. I have a set of products with associated options taken from a master list and put into a lookup table. I am trying to create a line item page where I select the product from a dropdown, and just those options associated with Product A come up in a portal. From there I want to be able to specify, for example, 4 of Option 1, 0 of Option 5, and 1 of option 12 for Product A. I was thinking that it would be done in a portal, but I'm wondering if the lookup table isn't somehow prohibiting me from doing it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm now designing a new DB in filemaker, and automatically given every table an ID for reference. Now, do I really need it for cases where the instance of that table can be referenced by another key?? Eg a Tutor will have a unique name - and this will make user interface easier without ID as I can give the user entering data a list of names rather than ID numbers. I was going to make drop down list from the Tutor table in the form of names taken out of the Tutor table that slot in the related ID number when chosen... if that makes any sense!!?? This problem doesn't happen all the time. Im running a multi-site DB and this problem didn't develop till I brought up the other site. The portal shows the active clients and related info. Clicking on the record # takes you to another file where the record resides. The relationship is based on a calc field called status in which it either states "Active" or "InActive" on the record end, and on the interface its a field that has "Active" in it. When an employee is finished with said record, it takes them out of that file to my interface file (main menu). In Ver. 6 I could make a 1 or 2 pixel heigh row in a portal that I would use for bar graphs (filling the rows with a container of color). When I went to do this in 7 I can only get each row down to about 5 pixels. Am I missing something? I have tried getting rid of the lines around the portal and also adjusting an empty portal with no fields. Charles

Hello everyone.. I have a table named Policies... I have about 50 fields on it...They all fit and looks somewhat nice (If I do say so myself ). The problem is now I have to add about 10 more fields... But there might be a silver lining... I created a form with different attributes like font, color, etc... for each field. This is good as I can give a particular field a greater prominence over another, which looks great on forms. When I change this form to table view, the resulting table assumes the same attributes for each field as in the form view. I am trying to use a value list from another file. When I create the value list in the other file, then click ok, the name of the value list does not show up -- instead I get <value list missing>. It seems the values in the list itself are maintained, just not the name. When I format the field in the portal (format -> field format -> popup list, etc.) the name of the value list is not in the list, just a blank space. Hi, I've been trying to solve this issue for a while. Here is the deal. I have a order table and orderItem table (which track item ordered). orderitem is also linked to Product table. FYI, I had to add productName, productCategory in orderItem table as look-up fied, otherwise, the productName (from Product table) would not show up when I was adding a row. I have been trying to figure out how to do the following. I have a Table of Performers linked to a Table of Shows they were in. It is a M to M since one performer can be in many shows and each show can have many performers, thus there is a join that links the two tables and contains the Performer ID & Show ID. I have a value list that has 20+ enties. I formated the field to radio buttons and found that I can only select up to the 17'th entry in the list. If I try to select below (verticle format) this, I and my mouse are ignored. This is occuring in several different fields and different VL's. How can I go arround this? Is there a fix? Thanks.

In practicing with portals I created a small DB where I would enter a brand name and I wanted to see in the portal below, all the items previously entered with that brand name. I did a self join on the field brand. I can get the related records to show but only after I exit the layout and then come back to the same record. In MS Access they had a trigger that could be applied when one exited a field. How can I get to see immediate information in the portal when I exit the brand field? What would be the "trigger" for the DB to do what ever it does when I exit and come back? Thanks all and have a safe holiday

yeah.. i've run into this before, so I know that it is something that filemaker doesn't let you do, but I am hoping someone may have a workaround... I want to interact with a global field in a header while in a list view. basically what i want is to have a field at the top of my list view, that the user can type into and hit a "find" button and it will then run a script that does a find. Just starting with FP7. Unlike 5 where selecting a value from a value lsit collapses the list, I am finding in 7 that when I select a value from the list, the value enters the field, the VL box collapses momentarily, then opens and stays open. Not very professional looking. I tried omiting the tab order but this has no effect? Any suggestions. Thanks. "It's never so bad that it couldn't get worse."

Howdy, I want to show a custom dialog with a message that resides in a table in another DB file. So, I have set up a related ID field in the current table matching the ID in the other file. By setting it to a particular value, I can access particular text. However, problems arise when I move to another layout - I need another related "ID" field in my new current table. AND SO ON, AD INFINITUM. Is there no easy way of getting at fields in tables in other files, without resorting to specifying related fields in the CURRENT TABLE ? ie. Hello all, I've been wrestling with a problem I have with the generation of a new record within a portal. I use a script to show the related records within the portal, and if there are no related records present, the script creates a new record and presents me with what seems to be an empty portal awaiting my new record. The catch is that after I've input my data (or even if I don't input any data), and click outside the portal I always get one blank related record appearing at the top. I've tried go to first record, portal row, and can't seem to cause a new related record to be created without getting the bonus blank record. Can anyone shed some light on this? …

Ok...I have a very weird thing...When I go to layout mode...the background changes to look like 1/2 paper and 1/2 gray...some of my objects are on and some are all off... Looks very funny...but when I try to go make some new objects on the gray area it will not let me? When I try to drag them off the white area it shows my a "do not sign"... probably a simple answer I hope. I have a list layout with a header and a body. The body list the values that I want but I have the header background as white and the body as a grey. In the contacts listing it gives the whole of the bottom part of the header as grey which is great. But in the company list it only display grey on the individual line of the companies being listed. I've got my Time database that has a daily time record for an employee for each day with a portal to a related database that has the line items records for each job number they work on and the time increments. In my layout, I've set up the portal to show 25 line items, with a scroll bar that allows additonal records greater than the 25 showing. My desire is to be able to have the employee print a daily time sheet if they'd like that will show all the line items even if it exceeds the 25. Is this possible, if so how? Thanks Jana

OK this should be an easy one for someone out there to help me with. FileMaker is cross platform. It's great! It means the guys in our design studio can access all our company records in the main database. I've recently started upgrading our company solution so that macs can use the functions also. But most of my layouts use the windows Tahoma font. Does this display on a mac? I cannot test it at the moment as I am making changes to our database out of office hours, using the remote desktop so I can't fire it up on my mac. Hi all, looking for a bit of help and was wondering if anyone here could provide some answers! I have a columnar list, and with it I have summaries after several types of sorts. All of these summaries are to appear, and contain (basically) the same information. Obviously, if the sorts have a lot of data to work with, and some distancing appears, then I want to have each of these summaries appear.
