In Filemaker 6 when you drew a hairline it was considered a vector line (or vector graphic however you wanna say it). In FM8 this is not the case. Here's the problem. We have a laser engraver that we print to from filemaker. While upgrading their solution from FM6 to FM8.5, it broke, because the laser envgraver Cuts on vector graphics, and burns non vector things. Now, nothing is cutting. Anyone know if its possible to make a hairline a vector graphic? Or some way to make FM8 hairlines work like FM6 hairlines?

You know how you can click an icon and click on a calendar, is there a feature in File Maker where you can use a calculator? Or do you have to build one from scratch using scripts? What the best and easiest way to handle it? I log in receipts and sometimes I have to calculate out certain line items from the total receipt. Please advise.

HI I have a unique problem. I have a report that displays a users Weekly Timesheet. The report has 4 sub summary parts. No body and No Header. The first part (subsummary part) is sorted by User Name + first date of the week that I enter in my search screen. This part displays the User name and Week days and Date. It also displays the Weekly Total and daily total for the user. There is a page break after each occurence of this sort. The report works fine as long as one week fits in one page, that is there are not a lot of timesheet entries for a user. The problem arises when the entries spill on the second page for the user for the same week. Then it just display…

I have created a mailing label layout for output on a laser printer. In preview view, my layout shows 2 columns and 8 rows of mailing labels - just as I've designed it. I can flip through the pages in preview view and all the records change. However, when I go to print my labels, I click preview and I only have 1 label showing which is the current record. What am I doing wrong?

after creating a new invoice if I go to print, it will print the form view layout instead of the sale invoice layout. if i select an older invoice and print it will print ok. when I select new invoice the invoice number is 98 but when i print it prints the form view for invoice number 86. i have attached some pics to maybe explain better. In FileMaker 8.0 I'm printing in preview mode as I normally do and I'm seeing that some of my records are missing sentences here and there on the paper coming out of the printer, and I can't figure out what my problem is. We have a specific page setup (duplex, print two pages per side) which is specified in a script. FM 7, 8 and 8.5 will not remember this setup. I have used the print setup script command and the print script command to attempt to get it to remember, but every time you launch FileMaker, it reverts to duplex one page per side. FM6 remembers this setup. Why won't 7?

Hello, my problem is i have an invoice page, the set up is title header body trailing grand summary now what i want is to have a payment slip that the client can cut off and return with there payment. so i have made this slip and put it into a title footer section. but it prints. title header body title footer (my payment slip) trailing grand summary so i changed it to a footer section, the problem is some of the invoices print over 2 pages so i now have 2 payment slips. anyone tell me where i am going wrong thanks RT

I have a record that shows 30 portal rows. If I have 50 records showing I obviously only can print the top 30 based upon the sort order. How can I print the remaining 20 records? I have no idea. B

I create a number of reports using scripts. I am running FileMaker Server7 Advanced (7.02). These reports work fine when using FileMaker Pro 7.0 but when I use FileMaker Pro 8.51 Advanced the report totals do the following. The totals on the initial preview page display fine and as I page through the subsequent pages the totals display fine. The problem presents itself when I page back to the previous page or when I print the report. The total column then displays zero's for all the line items. Is this a problem with using FileMaker 8.51 Advanced with the FileMaker Server7 Advanced (7.02) software? Any thoughts will be appreciated.........Ray

What is the best way to place report paramaters in the Header of a Layout. For exmaple, say I want to run a report for transactions 12/1/06 to 12/31/06 and there are no transactions on 12/31/06 but I want in the header to say the date range 12/1/06 to 12/31/06? I can come up with a few ideas but nothing that works in a multi-user environment.

In my educational database I have many official records that need stable margins for every print. As I noticed the page margins for A4 and for the same record differentiate from printer to printer. An official document that printed well with HP it is printed 2cmm less from the bottom of the page with EPSON and this is destroys the document. I do not know any reason why in both of printers show the A4 dimensions differently in layout mode. Can you tell me a solution to this problem? Pascal

I will eventually need to be able to print all 12 reports relating to an individual at one time if needed. Well it seems that the database files I have created locally, and then hosted on FileMaker Server 8 Advanced are using the printer settings I set when I first created the layout. This is a problem because some people print to different networked printers. All clients have a series of network printers that are mapped on logon, and no local printers installed. If someone changes the printer prior to printing it's fine for the day, or until they close it. Then it prints to the wrong printer again. What gives? Also a couple of my layouts were setup in 11x17 and no matter what I try it keeps defaulting back to 11x17 instead of letter. Is there a way to have fil…

Hi, I am using a Star receipt printer to print retail sales receipts. I've adjusted the font and margins in layout mode and everything is within the margins. However, when the actual receipt gets printed, the words run off the sides of the receipt paper. I've set the printer settings for receipt paper, and set whatever can be set in Filemaker in regards to print options, but to know avail. Can anybody suggest anything else I can try? Thanks.

I am a new user of Filemaker 7. I have a pre-defined database that includes names and email addresses. Will someone please be kind enough to tell me how to print out a list that contains (only) these two tables? My attempts have resulted in a long, horizontal table that includes many, many different fields that don't even make it to the printer. I don't want a spreadsheet. I did a search of my database and have 7 records I would like to print that I have merged into a letter format. I print and preview the pages, all looks fine. When I hit print, it prints the first page and the there is printer error and I have to shut off the printer or hit the continue button. When I hit the continue button, it prints the first page again and I am back where I started, with the error on the printer. Any suggestions?

Hello forum so here is the story, I buy a new Imac for a client, install 3 printers for them all fine when i print from any APP, i then print from filemaker it will for example print 1 page, now i go to print from another app again and i get an exclamation mark by the printer dialog box, so i have to uninstall the printer (s) and reinstall again, then i can print from any APP, i go to print from FMpro ADV it will not print,but in the OSX dialog box i print to a PDF the error does not appear, so every time i want to print i have to save as a pdf via OSX then print from "preview" why is this happening.

I have a situation in which a recently converted solution is doing some bizarre things with fonts. The first problem is that a particular report prints fine on 30+ different workstations (Mac and PC), but on 2 PCs it prints all text in fields with the correct-letters-minus-one. In other words, the phrase "job ticket" appears as "ina shbjds". Another strange behavior occurred when Accounts were set up on a Mac. The user names and passwords worked on all Macs, but login failed on all the PCs when the same login info was entered. This office has mostly MAC OS Panther clients, plus a couple of Tiger clients. (FMP 7, FM Server 7) Only the clients with Tiger installed cannot print from FM. When they send something to the printer, the printer shows an error about the size of the paper and no one else can print until the job is cleared. This problem only happens with FM, since the Tiger clients can print from any other application (Illustrator, PDFs, etc.). Anyone has seen this happen before?

So I've got FM server up and running, and it's hosting files, but it seems that to access the file the clients have to go through the process of starting filemaker, choosing open remote, selecting the server and then choosing the correct file from those displayed. Is it possible to do all of this via a desktop shortcut on the client's machine? Am I missing something? Sorry about this being in the printing forum. How do I change that?

I have a layout that I wanted printed on one page. However, the trailing grand summary and footer print on the second page. I've checked my page set up, the orientation is correct and the size of the paper is correct. I've also checked the part set up and it is correct. What else could be the reason my layout is printing on two seperate pages? Please advise.

Hi This is the scenario. I have one layout in FILE A which has 3 portals in it. When "Print" button is clicked, The report layout is created in FILE B where it looks exactly like the one in FILE A. The portal rows for the Report are defined as 30 rows with the "Sliding UP" option. Now the problem is, the rows slide up correctly but since there are 2 pages used, it prints a blank page. Is there a way to slide up the pages also ? Thanx

We have a script that prints out letters in our system. However sometimes when a user runs a script to print the letter FileMaker crashes. The basic components of the script are Show only current record Run spell check Print Go to original layout The only problem with pinpointing this issue is the crash happens at different stages of the process and might crash one machine and not another on the same record. I am creating a proposal form in a line item (child) database with a Title Header including related information from the parent file, a header for subsequent pages (description, quantity, etc.) and a body that includes the line items. Is it possible to specify the name of a field to be printed on a report layout using a script ? I have a report that has to be printed 6 different ways. The 6 reports are almost identical, where the only difference resides in the name of 1 field that changes in each of these reports. So I would like to create only 1 layout instead of 6, and use a script (or whatever technique appropriate) that would get the proper field name to print, based on a selection made by the user. Greetings. I'm trying to print labels from FMP 8.5 to a Dymo Label 400 Turbo. I can make it print a label, but not without it kicking out a second blank label behind it. When I try to adjust settings or create a new label layout, I'm confronted with an error that the layout extends past the body onto a second page and that I must change my settings if I wish to use columns. I've tried turning off column printing, but I still get the error. This might be caused by the fact that I can't actually select the exact model of Dymo Label that we have for use. Is there any way to disable the toolbar and "File" menu in a layout so that records can only be printed by a script that I wrote? I just want to disable those features on one of my layouts.

I generated a print report using subsummary parts. Unfortunately, the body of the report will break across page boundaries. This would be fine if the subsummary part was printed again at the top of the next page. I deselected "allow part to break across page boundaries" in the Part Definition dialog. Any fix for this? Any way I can get the subsummary to print on the next page of a report when records break onto the next page?

I've an odd printing problem. From XP Pro, FM8 Advanced. when I print a report to my HP LaserJet 2100 I get some text printing normally, and other text is giberish. I've tried printing to the HP with it's PostScript driver as the text reminds me of what a PDF file looks like when you don't print to a post script printer. I can take the same report to my ink jet, or my brother laser jet and it works fine. Any idea why FM doesn't work and play well with an older laserjet?

I'm having some problems with an 8.5 runtime not allowing users to swich which printer they print too. It seems very strange to me, I simply use the Print[] feature and let them control the rest (Internal Application, so I can train them ), its worked fine for a while, now all the sudden, they're default printer is set to Adobe PDF, and even if they change it and click print, it still trys to shoot out a PDF. This seems to be mainly happening on Windows XP Any Ideas?

Hi there, I have a funny problem: I have a FM database; I make a simple search, and I use a simple layout to print out the found records. Well, in FM 8,5v1 it prints just some pages of the records found, the other ones comes out white!!! If I try to see them on the screen preview, no problems, there are all of them. Another funny thing is that if I open the same database in FM 7 and I make the same search, it works and prints all, on the same computer and same printer. Any clue??? Thanks Simon from Italy

I'm using a portal for data input right now and each line creates a new record in the related database. What can I do on my print layout to print all of the related records without having a super ugly portal on my printed paper? I have a situation where I have 5 different layouts for printing out a work order. The workorder has records for line items of products (garments), and a sub summary part that lists printing information for up to five different print locations on the garments. A master order could conceivably have up to five permutations of print schemes ie; Line item one has one print on the front, line item two has the same print on the front, and another on the back, and so on. Ideally with no dialog, however the 'Print Setup script step' help says this won't work if another printer has been used prior to script execution*. Hi, this seems like it should be simple, but I can't find it in any discussion thread here or book. I'm printing pages for a directory from FMP 8.5; these pages will make up the middle part of the directory (the first few pages being indices, notes, etc.) Is there any way to get the page numbering in the printed report to start at, say, 8, instead of 1? The only option for page numbering in footers I can find is just the "##" symbol, with no way to manipulate that. Thanks-- Dane

When I print to not predefined printing, the FM 8.5 always prints on the predefined one. (in Win XP) In FM 6.0 there was no problems! [color:red]Why??? I need to change printer! Not only predefined!

When printing certain layouts my database is sending large files to printers. over 1Mb which can clog up the printer. Is there something in the layout that may cause this? Its almost like its generating a high resoltion print, or maybe PDF before printing. How can I make printing quicker? In some cases it can take over 5 minutes to print say 10 documents... no good to anyone.

Rant coming, be forewarned. I've been working with Filemaker since version 3. I really like the product for the most part but for me printing and has always been a mystery at best and downright annoying and frustrating much of the time. I am trying to print flashcards that I have created - idea is simple. Front side 'word' - Back side 'definition'. - I have made the layout fairly simple with multiple cards on one page (The cards are not very big) - 21 cards per page. - I go to preview mode - looks great. I've got front and back layouts made. Hello. I am new to the forum and am hoping someone can help me out. I am developing a filemaker POS for a friends restaurant. We have purchased a few used Epson TM-T88II receipt printers. I have downloaded the latest drivers and the printers work great. Only problem is that I have just discovered that FileMaker 7 and above does not support non truetype fonts. Does anyone know anyway to work around this? I really need to print to the printers using the internal font. The receipts print soooo slow without this. All, I would like to create a two column report that is sorted by a subsummary. When the records flow to the second column I would like the subsummary to repeat since this makes it easier for the reader. For the example pic I just have one subsummary but there will be more and the number of records under each subsummary will change. Hi: I'm trying to print a large field on one page of a form body. The contents of the field won't fit on one page, but will fit if I could print it in two columns. Is there any way to format a field that will print in multiple columns?

I would like my users to be able to direct their output to a specific printer, but not go through the dialog every time they choose to print a screen or a report - choose the printer once and all other print requests go to that printer without dialog. Hi guys I need to print to an Epson T88II receipt printer. I have installed the windows but when i try to print in filemaker it is really really slow. now i have worked out that this is becuause i need to use the epson printer fonts, however these do not show up in filemaker. Word pay displays them in the font menu but filemaker and for example notepad does not. I cannot find them in the control panel font folder either. Anyone had expereince with this? In one of the reports I made, I am trying to print out a field that was imported from an email. Unfortunately, the field has little boxes in it at the beginning of each carriage return. The boxes are those kind that mean unrecognizable character, and when I print, each line prints on top of each other, as if there was a carriage return, but no linefeed. If I manually go in and delete the boxes, I can print fine. Is there any function that will allow me to remove all of these boxes from my field? I'm trying to replace a hand written form system. The main form currently has spaces for a fixed number of related type data such as 3 people, 2 geographic locations and 3 lines for notes. It needs to have dynamic space for multiple related records such as 0 or more people (name, address, phone, etc.) and 0 or more locations (building a in area 1, building b in area 1, etc.) and the notes section may be anywhere from 1 line to 10 pages. We run FM on about 65 machines. We are exclusively Mac and all machines have been upgraded with FM 8.5. The problem effects different machines regardless of OS (10.3, 10.4). After we did the conversion to 8.5, we are having certain machines that Filemaker crashes while printing a report, either to PDF or to a printer. The print dialogue box never appears before filemaker dies. I have verified the problem occurs not in the page layout portion of the script, but rather when FM tries to send the job to the printer. We have just migrated a v 6 application to v 7 and serve it from FM Server 7v3 on OS X 10.3.9. We are now experiencing major printing problems and I believe it is a font issue with cross-platform issues. Any suggestions on a tool or method for fixing such a problem? The migration was done by a developer on the PC and then loaded back to the Mac OS X Server. The Macs can't seem to print anything right. In FM 8.5 I am trying to print a range of pages (addresses onto postcards) from an Epson Stylus C88 printer. If I choose 4x6 borderless in page set up it will successfully print the range, but slowly since only photo quality is available in this mode. If I select 4x6 in page set up, normal (faster) speed is available but will only print 1 or 2 records from any range selected. It will successfully print current record or all found records. The same printer will successfully print any range I choose with the 4x6 page set up in FM 5.5. Is there a known issue printing a range from FM 8.5, and is there a workaround? Steve

We just made the big jump from 5.5 to 8.5 and on the whole things have gone well and only a few issues have come up. In 5.5, if you went and changed the print setup for a file the layout would be aware and know that it could fit more on the page. In 8.5 you can see that the layout doesn't register this change. When I print it is simply shrinking the info and not displaying additional information. I've read on other threads to do this when you actually print the document, not when in the Print Setup but that hasn't had any affect on me. I also tried it via a script with the same result. I am trying to use an Epson DFX-5000+ with my data base in Filemaker Pro ver 7 running in Win XP. In my previous data base, I was allowed to select a native printer font from the font list. In FMP 7 the printer fonts do not show. for instance, they show in MS Word as long as I select the Epson as my default printer - draft, roman, or sans serif - all in 5 through 20 c.p.i. - with a little printer icon to distinguish it from the TT fonts. If I select one of these fonts, it will be sent to the printer using its built-in font and moves right along. These fonts are not showing in the font selections in FMP 7. I installed a new printer now everytime I try to print from FM 7 I get "Windows encountered a problem & needs to close" The problem seems to be "Error Signature" Ive changed the print settings to reflect the new printer, I don't know what else to do. I’m using FileMaker 8 v 3, Windows XP Media Center Edition, SP-2, and the Ricoh AP410 laser printer. FM is not printing properly in duplex mode. I must set the duplex printing option each time I start FM. When I start FM, I go to printer properties and set Duplex printing to on. FM then performs duplex printing with no problems. However, when I exit FM the setting is lost and the next time I start FM I must again re-enter printing properties and set Duplex printing to on. Hello - I have set up a form letter layout that works great when I specify a custom set of printer margins. However, when I created a script to attach to a button that would trigger the printing of a letter, I noticed that my custom set of margins was disabled. Is there no way to make a script set custom print margins? In the "Print Setup" script step, I can only select from standard page sizes, with the default (minimum) margins that the printer can print.

Can anyone tell me if they know of a single label printer (like Dymo or Seiko) which will print direct from an FMPro script (like a Laser printer will), without the need to use the label printer's own software interface/database? Mike Owen

I have a report that is summarized by one field. When I print the report, it is appropriately sorted, by the field value, but the sub summary doesn't appear in the Preview, nor is it printed. Where is it? How do I make it appear in the printed report? Thanks, Carlisle

I have a file that takes about 10 seconds to display the Print Dialog box (windows) when you press the Print icon on a very plain layout with 6 records. It is the only file in the system doing this. Does anyone know of a way to obtain normal line spacing when printing individual text fields in a vertical column format? -- for example, 6-lines-per-inch with a 12-point font. (Indeed, there are times when I would even like to use 8-line-per-inch spacing.) The attached file shows that a block of text (from one field) prints as one would expect. But every method I've tried for a column of individual fields results in a double-spaced results. I've run out of things to try and any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. LineSpacing.fp7.ZIP

Help, I am using FMP8 to set up a record keeping database of all of the coorespondece that my company has. Many of these "letters" can be more than a page. Entering them into a field is no problem, but when I try to print one, it gets cut off. I have tried making the field larger but this will many times just print a blank page when the text doesn't fill the field. Is there any way to have a field automatically adjust to the text put into it when printing? Sliding fields do not seem to work correctly for me. Any help is appreciated. I appologize if this has already been answered but I couldn't find it on the forums.

Hello. When I print a layout with checkboxs, the checkboxes print very very light. The X inside the checkbox can hardle be seen on a white background, but in some cases I have it against a 10% black background, in which cases it is even hard to see. For that matter, they are even harder to see on my iMac screen. I have to squint my eyes. Zooming in helps, a little. Is there a way I can define the checkboxes as being solid black?

Hello folks. I wish to programme a function into my database that gives the database the ability to resize graphics to any size using a layout page of exactly the required size. The technique I use is to create a layout with only the source (over-large) graphic on it, but scaled to exactly the size I wish to convert the graphic. I then change to preview mode, execute a copy scriptstep - which copies the current page as a graphic - and then paste the result into the correctly-sized graphic field. The problem is that the PAGE, and not just the graphic must be exactly the size I want it. Thus I would like a completely flexible printer driver, so that I can set…

I have a problem with envelope layouts. The individual fields in the address block do not slide up or left if a field is empty. The fields are merge fields - and strangely enough, this does not make any difference. I do view them in Preview mode. I have searched this forum and all I can find is a suggestion that calculation fields should be created in case some of the fields are empty. However, I think this is an unnecessary bit of extra work. Is this really the only remedy? Or is this a bug in FMPRO?

[Files are being hosted on FileMaker Server 8 - both clients are running Mac OSX 10.4 and FM8] I have a script that triggers two sub-scripts. One sub-script prints 2 copies of "Layout 1" to the clients printer (a receipt printer) and the other subscript prints 1 copy of "Layout 2" to a shared USB printer that is running elsewhere on the network. I have two separate page setups and print setups within each script but filemaker keeps printing all of the pages to whatever printer is defined in the first script that it executes. I'm trying to print labels by grade. After each grade I want a new page. I created a label layout with a subsummary on grade wqith new page before each occurence. Between the first 2 grades it works fine. Then the third and fourth group come out on one page. Then the break ends up in the second column for future grades - stops at end of grade in second column and the new grade starts in third column (5160 labels 10x3). Any ideas? Mike

I created a report layout using a Mac --- I used Times font (not Times New Roman). I have several people using the program - but one Windows user is complaining that the report prints scrambled. But if she changes a field to Times New Roman - that field prints - any ideas?

Hello All! Can a title header part slide and reduce in size? I am setting up my project quoting layout and I am trying to include a cover letter. I want the cover letter to be on the top front page. The only place I figure to put it is in the title header. I am using the Set Sliding/Pringing feature in the other parts, sub-sum, body, etc... and it is working well! But for some reason un-known to me I can not get the Sliding/Pringing feature to work in the Title Header. I have tried a number of things to test and try to make work with no success.
