I haven't been involved with FM since V8, but back then it was really hard to set up a List view that looked like a Table. In V10 it's just killing me. This must be something virtually EVERYONE wants to do at some point: create the appearance of a Table, with horizontal and vertical lines as separators, using a List. Why? Simply because you can do more in a List view. Mind you, it's not hard to make a sloppy-looking one. If you don't care if the vertical line segments have a "dashed" look, instead of flowing smoothly into an unbroken line from top to bottom, it's easy. But I -- and I daresay a lot of FM developers -- want it to "look good." Can anyone …

I wanted to create what I thought would be a simple report. I created a database for my wife's practice so she can take client notes and track billing. The notes and billings are in related tables to the client personal data. The report was to show all successful credit card charges in a date range selected by the user. I wanted the report to group by name and within the name group sort by date. It would show a subtotal for each name and a grand total at the end of the report. I have a report layout with a single line I am trying to fit 3 fields onto. The line contains static text along with 3 fields that will contain contact name, current date, and staff name. i.e. - "REPORT SENT TO <> ON <> BY <>." The issue that I am running into is that the Contact Name field can potentially contain anywhere from 1 to 6 different contact names (July and Jill and Debbie, e.t.c.) and I need the line to auto format to accommodate this. Is it possible to use Web Viewer to preview the contents of a container field? For our workgroup solution, I'm trying to give users the ability to preview image files and PDFs, specifically. I have a table that has the following fields: Phrase/ Phrase Export/ Phrase Export French The idea is that I can create a list of warnings, and the long form of the warning will be available for export. - This works fine. Can portal flash be prevented when flipping from record to record? I have built a self relation portal that I'm calling overview. This relationship basically displays any records without a close date, also has some on the fly portal filters such as status, lead artist, etc... The filters are global, records displayed in the overview portal are the same for ea. record. So when you flip from one record to the next, there is no reason for the portal to check it's self. But currently when you flip to next record, the portal clears it's self, then re populates the records, so this creates an annoying flash! Is there no solution to this? Please help. THANK Y…

I have a value list where the 1st field is text and the second a sequencing number to order the text when the list is displayed in a drop down list. I would like to suppress display of the 2nd field in the drop-down list. I tried reversing the fields and using the 'display only values from the 2nd field' option, but it won't let me sort on the 1st field. Is there any way to suppress display of a 2nd field in a drop-down list when that field is used only to sequence the entries in the list? TIA

Hello, I have a student database, in which i have already entered all records.I created a semester field later.Now, i want this field to carry a default value of "spring".What i did is that in the options section for fields i entered the default value in auto-enter tab.But, this works only if i create a new record(that is , it enters the default value for all new records) and not the already created ones.Is there a way that for these already existing records also the default value gets entered.I am asking because no.of already existing records is 700!! and i dont want to enter manually. Hi I am new to fmp. I am designing a database for a sauna to check people in and to charge drinks ect to their key number. I have 2 tables: [Lockers] LockersID LockerNo CheckedIn (Yes/No) [CheakIn] CheckInID DateIn TimeIn Locker I have a pop up menu to select the locker however i want to filter this pop up so that it filters to only show lockers whos checked in value = no. I can't seem to get it. I have 2 tables, one is the invoice header date, invoice number name & address then I have subtotal and taxes. I created a 2nd table, lines which has qty, price extended price &invoice number . I have a relationship using invoice as the relationship. I've seen some demo applications that use a webviewer to display temproal information such as a calculation of found records vs. total. How is a web viewer supposed to be stup in order to disply such data? For example, if I enter a Let function which calculates a subtraction between two fields, how can I display the result in order to avoid creating an extra field in the table?

I have a checkbox that is populated by a value list. The information will change from time to time so this seemed to be the best way to set it up. The checkbox items are displayed in alphabetical order but I would also like the resulting text field to be sorted alphabetically. Hi there, There is something I can't pin point with my portal. I have 2 dbs. The first one holds a portal. The second one is used for logs. Every time someone logins, a new log is created but no logs are displayed in the portal. When I go back to the first db where the portal is located, then the logs are displayed. Hello helpful people, I manage a few different FMP databases and have noticed that when I "View as Table" or create a report, only one of the related records tied to a given record is displayed (the earliest entered one, I think). For instance, I have a table for "customers" and another for "checks received." It is a one-to-many relationship, since some customers divide their one-time payment into more than one check (it's a long story). Solved a screen sizing issue! Is there a better way then what is described below? My solution is used by many people in the company, some have 17 in. screens while others have 30 in. I originally designed and developed the solution on my 30 in. So you can guess when viewed on a 17 in., it did not fit. To solve this, I redesigned to fit on the 17 in. (the smallest in the company) and give user the option on start up to view a large screen or a small screen. I've got a layout that uses repeating fields for a pretty standard invoicing report. The problem is, for certain repetitions, the descriptions can get pretty long and would force the repeating field to extend past a page boundary. Very simply, I have FMP Server 9 running on dedicated machine. I use our FMP database to store info and images about the products that we sell on our website. I need to be able to import images and pdf files into the database (and be able to view both filetypes) and have those files stored on the server machine in a folder which I will synchronize with our FTP site for use by our website. Is there a simple way to do this? Currently I import images INTO the database (instead of just references) and then export those images to a specific folder when I am ready to upload them to the FTP site.

Hi, I am wondering if there is a way to Limit how many records can be created in a portal. For example... I am recreating a form in FMP.. I wanted to use a Giant Portal, that has all of the different Fields being used. The catch is, I only want to allow at max, 12 rows of data per 1 Parent Record. What usually happens is the portal extends to allow more records, I don't want that to happen. I want it to stop at 12. I am trying to make it fit perfectly on a sheet... and I don't want to allow anything over 12... Somewhere along the line I got the impression that it's a "Best Practice" (or at least a *better* practice) to build a little Child-Record-Creator system where the user onters values for a new child record in little global fields and then scripting a button to go and create the record, rather than simply putting browsable fields in a portal to the Child table and allowing users to create records by simply entering data on the next line in that portal. What I can't recall is *why*. I plan to create a layout to display an analysis of some of the information in my database. It will essentially be a table that displays the same list of items for the x axis and the y axis, with the values in the table being number that represents how strong the relationship between each item is. I'm and advanced beginner with Filemaker. I'm working with a database that's on a server, and am having a problem with some of my checkbox sets. There are a few, but I'll start with the simplest. I have a checkbox for whether or not a record is "active". Then I have a calculation field, whose value is 1 if the checkbox is checked, and zero if not, called "cue count active calc". I can't figure out why square boxes similar to this one, , appears instead of valid characters on Table Views editing whenever I use the 'Ctrl-C', 'Ctrl-V' (Copy & Paste), etc. The problem came out when I customized my own Menu. I have a table for film festivals (FESTIVALS) joined to a table for deadlines (DEADLINES) by a festival ID Key. Hi, I have the following problem: I have a database of companies, some of which are checked as holdings. I need to define a value list, which will display only those companies, that have been marked as "holding" with a checkbox (i.e. the checkbox field is set to "1"). Hi all I would like to create a layout where a field is only editable if a condition is met. The scenerio is: I have an inventory database. A stock item is of one of two types, a 'one-off' or a an item that many copies can be ordered. I would like to create an 'Order' layout that allows me to enter a purchase quantity if an item is not a 'one-off' or automatically sets the quantity as 1 if it is a 'one-off' and prevents the field from being editable. I would like to add a grey background without printing it. I can easily add a background color by choosing a fill color in the part...but this prints. I do not want to waste toner and a white background is usually better for prints. I am using a simple technique of creating a square, filling it with grey and making the object non-printing. I set the anchors to fill the screen no matter the zoom factor or screen size. This works but is much to tedious when dealing with many and complex layouts. Any assistance would be appreciated. I want to create a custom menu that will trigger a script when a window is closed, by whatever means, keyboard, mouse, and so on. I've been told the best way to do this is create a custom menu that will run a script when the window is closed. I can't seem to accomplish this. I create a menu with the script I want attached to the File>Close menu selection and set that menu to run with a specific layout. Instead of running the script the custom menu disables everything, including the ability to close the window by any means. I want to set up an interface that works like a browser shopping cart, where one (main) image is shown with a row of smaller images representing different colors of the main image. I'm not sure if this is possible, but I was wondering if I can keep a user from entering ANY data into field1 if the value of field2 = "C". If the value is not "C," then they can enter anything they want into field1. I have a database that customers can use to generate product orders by finding items, entering a quantity and clicking an ADD button to add the item to their order. I have a few portals that are set up with a scripted sorting solution based on Excelisys's Extreme Portal Sort. This solution has worked very well for my needs. But my problem is that when a change is made to a field that the portal is being sorted by, quite often the portal resorts behind the scenes but the view does not seem to refresh. The result is the data being viewed is not lined up with the actual data. So when you make a change to a row you are looking at unsorted it actually changes the row that is really there after the sort. Hi -- I have a Sub-summary List View layout in which I want to display the data with merge fields formatted as buttons so that the user can navigate to Form Views of various individual records of their choice. I want to enable users to do a Find on one of these fields, which I would like top put in the Header part. All the DeletePortalRow buttons work fine (they delete only the portal row that the button is clicked in) except in one particular portal... I want to reposition the layout part handle so it is vertical rather than horizontal (so that it does not cover elements in the header that I want to work with). I know it can be done (I have done it before myself!) but I have lost/forgotten the way to do it. Hello, I created a one page report that I need to drop into a Power Point presentation. The problem is the image is fuzzy in preview mode and when I export to PDF. My friend an I are working on the same database on different computers. I created the file on my Mac, and he has been adding data on his PC. Everything looks fine when he opens the file on his computer, except that many of the fields don't fit the last few items of their corresponding value lists. I don't know if this is because the field itself shrank, or because the text size increased somehow. Does anybody have any ideas/advice? This is a problem that is fixable by manually increasing the size of each affected field on his computer, but doing this every time I update the template is getting very frustrating. I have a value list based on a related field, does anyone know of a way to add additional values to the value list that do not appear in the related field? I tried creating a new calc field using the ValueListItems function and adding additional items to it but in order for it to work properly I cannot store the calculation so I cannot base a value list on the field.

I have an IWP-hosted database that keep generating the error message "Portal Related Record Contents Have Been Modified" when there are two users working simultaneously. They are both verifying the contents of records displayed in a portal. The individual records have a user account name field and the TO relationship behind the portal requires this field to equal the users account name, so each user only sees records they are supposed to check and verify. I have 3 tables: (1) Products (2) Tags (3) Products to Tags (similar to a Line Items Table) For each product record, I want to have a layout that displays ALL tags (400 or so) in a checkbox format. Every time a user checks or de-checks a tag in the checkbox, I want a record created or deleted in the Products-to-Tags table. You guys might think I'm dumb, and you'll probably be right. It feels like I'm missing something obvious here. On one particular layout, I have a subsummary part that shows up when sorted by clients. This layout is used for shipping. It would be tremendously helpful if I could calculate how many separate subsummaries are present in a given found set, so the user could pull down as many boxes as there are clients in a given shipping list. Ugh -- maddening little detail I can't pin down. I made a solution a while ago with a little interface for creating child records from the parent context. A portal displays the current child records so that the user sees what's already been catalogued. Works fine. When there are no child records, the portal displays a first row with blank fields, and the little "Goto and "Delete" buttons I put into the portal. Here's what I hope is a simple one. I want to display field data from a parent record in a layout so that the user can see this information when entering data in the child. The parent information is prose, and the length of it will be highly variable. I *don't* want the user to be editing this parent information while in the child layout. Is there a method for passing data generated (from a javascript) in a WV back into the database? I manage a chemical inventory for my research group, in which an important feature is the visualization of chemical structures. I have a situation in which the user draws a chemical structure into a javascript based plugin (e.g. ChemDraw ActiveX, ChemDoodle Web Components, etc) and then converts that structure in to the SMILES format (a 1D text representation), which I'd like to store in the database. Hi, I'm trying to change the colour of text between two pre-defined tags. I am trying to create a layout that only allows data to be entered into a field if a condition is met. e.g Do you have a favourite colour? If the answer is 'yes' then I can select from a value list what colour is my favourite. Why do thin field boundaries appear when you enter any field for entry? Also fields with a transparent fill become filled with white when you enter any field. I have a set of vertical lines arranged horizontally (think: fenceposts). I want to align their tops with the same imaginary horizontal line. I select them all, and click Align Top Edges, thinking this will ... well, align the tops of these lines. Instead, I am seeing them move downward a few pixels... and when I click ALign Top Edges again, they again move downward! As if I were repeatedly hitting the down-arrow key. It's like Birnam Wood creeping toward Dunsinane. Is this actually behaving as it should??

Can a VL that uses field data be made to retain formatting? The ValueListItems function returns the text only as entered. My VL in question is used in a function to compare to two VLs which does not work due to differences in capitalization of original data. Formatting the field using auto enter calcs does effect the data in the VLs.

I have two tables Discipline & Disposition. I created a value list using the records from the Disposition Table. I want to use a drop down list to populate up to six Dispositions on the Discipline Layout. When I use it on the first occurrence, both fields from the value list appear. When I try it on the second occurrence, only the first field populates. Seems like a common use of value lists, but cannot figure it out. Thank you in advance.

I have a portal on a layout which is filtered by a drop-down list immediately above it, yet, when filtered, displays multiples of the same record. The filtering menu appears to do SOMETHING, as selecting an option alters the portal. Currently the portal is displaying the appropriate amount of records; the problem is that the portal only ever displays one record, and instead of displaying the appropriate records, displays the same record repeatedly. Please refer to the attachment. After the portal record is duped I'd like the focus to go to the newly duped record. The problem is, with the Go to Portal Row:Last script step the focus indeed goes to the last (and blank) portal row instead of the next-to-last one which has the newly duped record. Hi! I have a list in my orders' layout and arised a design problem: I need Trailing Grand Totals at the bottom of the page but FM put it directly at the end of the list.
