Hello once a gain. Ya, I'm stuck. Is there a way to open a portal with in a portal row? I would like to be able to enter a record in the Cash Out portal and open a portal from that record (like a pop up window) and enter item numbers. Each item number needs to have it's ID Key. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi I have a lot of fields to create conditional formatting for and their formatting is based on a second field, a different field for each one. All of the fields follow the same format. EG. the displayed field that has the conditional formatting on is JA1 and the field that determines its formatting is JA1 Copy. To save a huge amount of time I would like to set all the fields at once determining the referenced field by formula ie JA1 + copy. Is this possible? Many thanks John

Hi Here I am with another question. I really am glad this forum exist and there are nice people there to answer my questions. Thank you. My question is: A field can have a dropdown with a valuelist and the user can choose a value and it will return this value in the field. In my case the user (if clicks on the arrow) needs to open a pop-up with more information on it and if a record is selected, it needs to bring back not only the field from where it's selected, but also 3 more. I'm trying to contextually assign different value lists to the same (global) field for search purposes. Using the calculation "ValueListItems" I can assign different value lists to the same field. The problem I'm having is that I want the global search field to display as a drop down list with auto-complete. But the only way I see to make this field as a drop down with auto-complete is in layout mode. When this is done a value list must also be assigned, which prevents using a script to contextually assign a different value list to that field. Is there a calculation or scripting method that can make the global search field as a drop down field with auto-complete? …

I am trying to set up a calculated field that will give me the name of each related record in a portal based upon which record number it is. Basically, what I want to do is create a calc that will name each row of a portal whatever number of a series that the portal row falls in to and also count the total number of related records. i.e. - 1 of 5, 2 of 5, 3 of 5, etc. I'm not sure where to put the calc. It would make more sense to put it in the parent relationship so that it can count the related records, but when I do this using a count ( related record) field it only gives me the total number of related records in my portal.

I have a layout with a conditional format background field with different colours depending upon future week for each record. This works well for any Account with Full Access privilege however Accounts with a lesser privilege do not have their records conditionally formatted. Suggestions for remedy please. John

I have a drop down list that is showing me a code and the full name - the code goes in the active field and a look up puts the full name in another field. Because the codes are different lengths (they're actually nicknames) the drop down is not nicely and neatly aligned where the second value is listed. Is there any way of altering this by formatting the drop down list (or otherwise)?

Hi all, been a short time lurker but first post : This is probably an easy one but it is where I am at now If I have a field with a specific and unique name (for every record) is it possible to create a drop down select list of that field to be used as a go to record selector? Hi all Just started in Filemaker Pro 11 Advanced. I created a portal with a background so the rows get colored differently (standard function) The rows displaying however turn up white. I would assume they get the same color as the row they are on. What do I have to do to get the same color in the fields as in the row? And second question Every row in the portal has a field 'opmerkingen' which I want to display outside of the portal. The content has to scroll with the portal, showing the content of the row it's on. I need to aggregate the information in several fields and use it in a value list. But if the field with the value list is a calculation field, it is not possible to set it to "auto-complete." For example: 3 fields: last_name, first_name, complete_name If the complete_name field is a calculation field (calculation = first_name & last name) then a value list of complete_name cannot be set to auto-complete. Is this something I'm doing or is this generally true with value lists, that they cannot be set to auto-complete if they are a calculation field? I can't get the simplest thing to work. I've got the port set up I'm telling it to sort by an indexed field that contains numbers and is set as "number". But the portal isn't sorting. Hi everyone, I am an beginner on FM, so please be patient. I set up a database which works fine so far. Now I want to perform the following: Inside my main table I have fields for keywords. I have two variables I have assigned through a script. Each variables contains all the primary key values of a specific table. I want to step through the first list and see if it contains any values that are contained in the second list and, if so, apply a condition to it. The obvious choice for this would be the PatternCount command but unfortunately this will not work for numbers. How would I do this?

I have a trailing sub-summary that has a summary field in it. It calculates the total amount of hours for each of the sorted records. I'm trying to make a conditional format based on the value of the summary field but it doesn't work. It seems to only recognize the field as it's total quantity and not by each sorted record set. I work for a company that sells plastic injection molding machinery and parts. We use FileMaker Pro 9 for our database. Each record has information like volts, make, model, serial number, and so on and so forth. Well, we also have one Container object per entry that we use to display a picture of the part / machine that the record is in reference to. Anyway, lately the Containers seem to be randomly losing the path to the picture files. Hi, I have a layout with a portal view of another table. This table contains multiple client's information. If I want to send an email to each client in the table I've found I can do this . . . It appears when using the combination of Filemaker 11 and Internet Explorer 8 that web viewers automatically display all web pages in "compatibility view". This has become an issue with the particular web pages I'm trying to display as it causes errors on the page. I have tried changing settings from within IE8 itself but with no luck. I'm trying to implement my first production version of a filtered portal and have fallen flat. All I'm trying to do is display records that contain characters from a user-entered string. No matter what I do after entering the characters, I can't get the portal to refresh until I step away from the current parent record. Then it updates immediately. I've modified Mr. Vodka's simple example to show the results I'm getting. Indeed, if I change my field to a value list selection, it updates just like his example did. (BTW, my match field has to be in a separate record, as shown ... but this shouldn't make a difference.) Any guidance will be appreciated. …

I have been using Lynda.com and this forum to answer my question, with little success. The source could be from multiple places, so I am using a "checkbox set" so multiple sources can be selected. I'm trying to be able to print postcards with addresses from my customers table, but the postcards are too small to print the normal direction in our HP printer. Thus, we have to flip the cards so that the card is going in horizontally. This presents a major issue when trying to format the 4x6 layout properly. I can rotate the text, but it becomes impossible to properly place and format the text box. I can flip the orientation in page setup, but this doesn't actually change the way its printed - just the way it looks on screen. I have a database of about 1000 products. When looking at each record / product in layout view I want to see a list of 6 similar items to the current product in which customers might also be interested. A bit like the way Amazon does it. On my left side I have a master list of standards, and on the right side I have a list of selected standards for the current record. I'm using Filemaker to publish a directory. Details of each entry are presented on a half page and need to fit into specific areas of the page. Occasionally, the name of the organisation is too long to fit in the available space. I am trying to find away of working out how long a string is when presented on the page (the sum of the character widths, not the number of characters in the string) so I can condense the font or reduce the text size to allow it to fit the available space. I have a DB with shippers and shipping items. Shipper is a table, shipping items is a related table. Hey, I have a drop-down list with auto-complete from value list enabled. Go to next object using TAB and RETURN are enabled. If I'm in the field and type the letter A to start my auto-complete I see the dropdown... I press the down arrow to move my selection from Apple to Apricot and then press tab. It works. But now if I shift-tab back into that field, I see a list of all my values again, but if I try and use the arrow keys to change the selection only pressing RETURN actually changes the field value - tab simply moves to the next field and doesn't update the field (like it would on a webpage for example)... this behavior will mess up my users. I have an employee database with some drop down lists that allow selection of the department and position of the employees. The Department and Position value lists are sourced from related tables. I'll use the department field for the sake of discussion here. But I'm still getting a couple hundred line breaks. What character am I missing? Hello! I hope I'm posting this is the correct subforum. I have a layout (based on the table patient) in which I am wanting the user to be able to enter a new patient information. I have another table called referrer (which is linked to patient via a pK fK relationship). I have a field tool box set up to auto-complete and use the referrer::lName box as the auto-complete field. This appears to work great, and seems to auto-complete and fill in the name. I am modifying the FMP Starter Solution: Expense Report. On the Expenses tab, I want to add a field, "HOW PAID" to allow a "C" or "R" entry. I am looking at adding this field in the portal to the left of the expense amount for each day of the week in the Expense Report. Hi, I've created two calculation fields for a new products release report., 1 that pulls product info from our database and formats it as HTML and the other pulls the product category name and formats that inside HTML tags. The product category name is used a sub summary so you have multiple products to each category. : OK, I know it was recently Halloween, but gremlins in my layouts I don't need. Anyway, I've been chugging along fixing this and reformatting that in layouts. Now, mind you, I am dealing with an FM6 system converted to FM11, and there are three database files - each with a table of the same name as the database. Without actually attempting yet to develop a solution for font sizes and layout difference required for different screen resoltions per workstation, I thought it best to ask about this topic to get a better understanding of what others have done, or what is recommended to address it. I'm talking about how fonts are too small to read on some screens with super hi res display settings. Is there any way to export a layout? I would like to be able to export and import layouts so I can work on layouts at home while users are adding and modifying records at work. Then I could come in to work with new layouts and update them at work without overwriting the database with an older copy of the file. It looks like I will have to work at night to change the layouts, and get into work before any data entry happens.

Employees Join Table Vehicle I have it set up so an entry in either Employees or Vehicle creates a new record in the join table so if you're in either table, the relationship will show up on either side. So I have a portal on Employees and Vehicles from the Join Table. In the Portals are the fields from the join table. These fields are drop down value lists. Hi, Id like to print an invoice but of course it can be 1 page, 2 pages, 3 pages and so on depending on the size of the invoice. I have much FM printing experience. Whats crucial i think is how I represent the lines of the invoice. I'm thinking of an approach where I could either use repeating fields or a portal for the lines/items on the Bill. Here are some lines: bananas 10 $2.00 $20.00 apples 10 $1.00 $10.00 etc There are 2 Problems. (1) First, I want the pages to stop printing on the last page necessary. I am having an issue with adding a new record to a portal. I can edit records that show up in the portal, but am unable to add a new portal record as I get the message "field not modifiable." I have the "allow new records" selected in the relationship. The primary key in table 1 is related to the secondary key in table 2. I'm using FMPro Advanced 11 Windows 7, and FM Server advanced 11 Mac Snow Leopard server. I'm sure it is something simple, but I'm not figuring it out. Thanks.

I'm trying to create a database to book films and I need to know what exhibition copies are available (i.e. not already booked) to complete the booking. For example, let's say I have only one 35mm print of a film, and it is booked from 12/1-12/4 and 12/7-12/9. If someone requests 12/5-12/6 it would show up in the portal (and therefore available) but if someone requests 12/5-12/7 it would not. I'm not sure how to make the table with the "booked dates"...or what the (global?) field in the bookings table that is related to it should look like...any ideas on structure and portal relationships to get me started? Hi, I have a vertical portal row on my Contacts layout with provides a quick navigation to different contacts. Imagine if you will a vertical list of all the contacts in the database to one side of the full details for each contact. I have the portal sorted A-Z by the full name. What I would like to do is add the letters A to Z beside the portal and have each letter as a button that when clicked, jumps to the relevant row where that letter first appears. ie, If I want to pull up Peter's details, I click on the 'P' and the portal scrolls to the first entry beginning with the letter P. Is this possible? All help is much appreciated! Andy.

Hi. For a couple of years now I have been sponging off people in this forum to further my FM skills. I would like to contrbiute back to the group with a little something I wrote that I found useful on the front of my app. Naturally what you see here is cut down, but the structure is there so you can integrate into your own stuff. I have a problem that I do not understand how to solve. I created a solution for a therapy practice. One field is for a description of the service for the purpose of billing insurance. I set the validation for the field to value list "psychological services" that uses "custom values". Initially I entered standard values, but allow the user to edit the list. The problem is that when I update the solution I have to find out if the user edited the "psychological services" value list and enter it into the new blank database I give to the end user. In Photoshop there is a keyboard shortcut "Shft + Ctl + E" which merges all visible layers. In Filemaker as we discovered quite by accident, this same shortcut deletes the current record. Users in our office often work in Photoshop with the database open. Now when they use this shortcut and the focus is on Filemmaker rather than Photoshop, well you can see the problem. Is there a way to disable keyboard shortcuts in Filemaker, and how would I accomplish this? Thanks Ron

I've created a nice little report. It shows xactly want I want but as an added refinement I would like one of the summary fields I have used - a value - to be used in sorting the summary report so that as well as having something sorted by product, year and where purchased I can see which is the most expensive. Is this possible - because when I go into the script to the sort function the summary fields are greyed out.

I run a small office network with filemaker server 10 on server 2008 5 Windows Xp Clients FMP 10 1 Mac Client FMP 10 Everything displays perfectly fine on the Mac client and on 4 of the XP clients. But on one of the xp clients the display is being distorted. I have tried adjusting the refresh rate but it doesn't seem to help. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this and how to fix it?

If I want to create a script or do a button setup to Go to Layout, I only get to pick from layouts in the current file I am in. There does not appear to be a way to select layouts of tables in other files, unless I created those layouts of the tables in the other files from within the database file I am editing. In other words, the list of possible layouts to go to is restricted to those that live in the current file I am working in/on. Am I missing something here? How can I get this done? Thanks!

Hi, this is my first post in this forum. I'm using FM 11 pro with IWP. I have a portal filter based on a field that contains the current account name and the filter looks like: my_portal_table::my_filed = Get (AccountName) Using that in IWP it doesn't work. It seems that the filter use the name of the account that started the FM (not that of the web user). Infact the filter works fine if the web user and the FM user are the same, not otherwise. Hello - I am trying to get a layout to work with. We have patients on floors. Daily work occurs with a layout which includes the floor / room number. I would like to include a part on this layout that has a index of floors and numbers of patients on each floor tallied over a found set. I would need this to be visible in FM Go. is there a solution? I have a report that lists games played from the most recent to the oldest that runs about 5 pages. When I use the "Save As PDF" function, I get the standard save document dialogue box that allows me to name the document and save it to a folder. However, when I go to that folder, there is a new folder inside it with the document name and then inside that is the document I saved, but without a name (I didn't press the New Folder button in the Save dialogue box). Why does it create a new folder and give it the name I want to give the document, and give the document no name? I have never seen a Mac program violate the proper Save procedures like this. Good day everyone. I have been asked to create sales reports summarised by month with each month running horizontally ie. in a row rather than a column, this seems to break all the rules as the summary parts only work in columns there seems to be no way to accomplish this other than adding fields for each month as it arises which is crazy. Has anyone got any ideas on this or can point me in the right direction, I have looked at a few FM examples of reports but can find nothing to give me a clue. Thanks in advance Vincent

Hello, Over the last couple of years, I've built a job management database for our company, but I only "work" with the program a couple times of year, so I'm a little slow. I have a value list from DB1 that I use as a pop-up list when creating new jobs in DB2. I was hoping to limit the value/pop-up list options to contacts who work for the same contractor (Customer Name) that I've already entered in DB2. I know almost anything is possible with FileMaker and searching your threads has always helped me in the past! Thanks, Tara

In a three year old FM database there are portals for data entry within a parent file and this design has been working fine until recently. Now, in at least two instances, the relationship key data in the child (portal) files have been lost/corrupted and the data no longer displayed in the parent file portal; if the keys are manually corrected, the data displays as it should. I suspect some form of file corruption -- and I wonder if this is a good time to "rebuild" the solution and, if so, what the preferred method for this would be. I am using FM 10 but could upgrade to FM 11 if it would help. Thanks in advance.

I have updated a data base I created, but my old records do not show the current information needed to take advantage of my implemented Value list. To make the value list work I needed to combine some fields and changed the combinations along the way while I was refining what I wanted (this combined field is what is not updating in the old records). All new records are fine but the old ones have this one field still showing the old original gathered information. Is there a way I can update the old information so all records are using the needed current information for my value list? Thanks in advance,

I have a recipe dbase, using o.a. the tables: - "recipes" and the table: - "search recipes". Both tables are related by the field "recipe name" (recipe name = recipe name) In the layout of "search recipes" I have the entry field "recipe name". Any entry entered in this field should generate results in the portal (from the table "recipes") So I want the entry "tomato" to deliver the results: tomato soup spicy tomato pie tomato soup 2 Or when I enter: "tomato soup" it should result in displaying: tomato soup tomato soup 2 I just cannot figure out how to do such a thing with FMPro 9.

Hello! I'm hoping I can ask my question and it be clear what I'm going after. I have a layout which contains a portal of various information. Each line of information could be considered similar to what you would see on an invoice (for sake of simplicity we will say it is an invoice). What I am wanting is for there to be a button on each line of the portal. If the user clicks the button, it will take the user to a new layout (this part is obvious and easy to do). Just moved from v8 to v11 I am unable to find the option where to select what records to print. In the help section I find: See if the Current record option is set in the Print dialog box. Change the option to Records being browsed. To see this option in the Mac OS, choose FileMaker Pro from the pop-up menu. Exactly as it used to be in v8. However not available on my computer. (see pic) So what is up here? Any ideas?

I am very new to FileMaker so please be kind. I have a field which has a drop down list of values. The values are from a field in another table. I am aware that I can have the list display additional values from a second field along side the first. i.e. an item number and description. My goal is to display both values in the same field when one is picked. Unfortunately the second value disappears when a selection is made. I am willing to have a second field look up the data based on the selection, but I am not sure how to do that. My other problem is that I need to adding multiple items to the same record. Hi, Is it possible to have the rounded corner fields on the layout? I am using Filemaker pro advanced 8.5. I am dispaying the photos in the field and would like to have rounded corners for the field. I have a value list pointing to a join table which I've created a many to many relationship for. In my master layout I have a portal with Pop-up menu for the selection of records and the associated value list. Everything is working correctly, except that my user wants the list that pops up to have a custom order. How can I make the pop-up list use a custom order as opposed to automatically being alphabetical? Thanks in advance!!!

I want to show records in one portal with several fields: "Diagnosis" and "Date." I currently have a field that the users use to select their respective names when entering records. The drop down list has names and a respective district, for example: Sarah - DAL. This is for Sarah the coordinator and DAL for Dallas. There are several names in the drop down. A request by the users was to have this coordinator field auto populate when they open the file. My guess is this should be fairly simple. I am guessing that if I add security and have the users login to the database I will have the identity of the user portion solved. I have a value list currently displayed in a portal with related records. The value list uses values from the field that's pointing to it, but there are several items in the list that don't have any data associated with them. For example, if I want to find the name of a company in this field, say ABC Company, I select ABC Company from the drop down list, but it returns the message 'No records match this set of find requests'. So if there are no records matching, how is it even showing up in the list if it's set to only use values from that field? I'm trying to delete these values from my drop down list since they're not being used but it won't allow me; there's no way…

Hello all! I'm hoping some of you can steer me in the right direction. Goal: To be able to populate a PDF form (or a PDF-like form) with data from the FM database. Then I would like that form to be transmitted via internet fax to a fax number which is stored in the db. Here is my question: What is the best way to go about this? Would re-creating the PDF form as a layout be a good way to go? Is there a way to take that 'layout' and have FM internet fax it, so it would look like it was the PDF? I have a DB that has many different layouts, all utilising portals to show related tour dates for one tour. Each layout has separate groups of information about each tour date. I am using a scrolling portal on each layout. When I goto related record, the scroll position jumps to the bottom of the viewing window. When I goto last record, then to the portal row (saved as a variable) then the record appears at the top of the window. Is there a way of getting the attribute of the location of the portal record on the screen so the next layout appears scrolled to exactly the same position?

Hello FM Forums, I've searched all over and haven't seen anything on this topic. Maybe it's a lot easier than i think but here it goes. I created a portal for a travel database to list activity for a group for each day. (each portal row refers to a day) Lets say i have 10 records with 10 days of information. When i go to table view to see my data, it shows me all ten records but only what happened on the 1st day. Can you get filemaker to show all 10 days for each record or am i doing this completely wrong? please help!!

I have a portal and each row is highlighted with different colours depending on a script that is triggered by various coloured buttons. This works well by having transparent text fields laid behind the data fields on the portal. However, when you enter data, all the fields in the portal turn white, or whatever colour I format the body of the layout. Is there a way of fields not going back this far in an arrangement stack so that they can retain the colour of the text file behind them during data entry? Thanks Frommy

I have a field that is a Check box attached to a value list. The value list are "Amenities" and each amenity returns a number in another field. If Amenity A is selected, then the result number associated with that Amenity should be 124. I a very close having the numbers show up correctly however some of the amenities result in two numbers. For example: Amenity "24 Hour Front Desk Attendant" (Number "6") and Amenity "24 Hour Front Desk Attendant (On Call) (Number "179").
