I am trying to create a pop-up value list to insert an employee ID into a field on an unrelated table (Mail Boxes), so the ID of the employee who opened the mail can be verified and stored. Problem is, employees are in the Contacts table, with all the other contacts. (I thought this would help reduce the number of layouts, fields, etc., especially when hiring an employee already in contacts.) When I make the value list use the fields from contacts, everything is fine, but I get a list of ALL contacts, not just employees. I have one table (Instructors), related to 3 separate tables (Days_Available, Certifications, and Addresses) by a primary key. In a fifth table (Events), I need to be able to select and schedule Instructors based on information in the 3 related tables (Days_Available, Certifications, and Addresses). Hi, I have a question about calculating portal row count while also trying to adhere to the data separation model. My understanding of TSM is probably shakey, but when calculations are for interface purposes, one should try to keep them out of the data files and in the interface file. Is that correct? I have a Project layout/table with a Project Notes portal to add notes to the project. I am trying to make a button/script that will: 1. Create a new related Note record in the portal 2. Populate a couple of fields in that related record 3. Open a new window (a detail view of the Note record) 4. Commit the record in the original file (so when I start typing in the Detail window it doesn't say "this record is already being modified..."). I think I've figured out everything but committing the record. I think it is committing the record in the popup window, not the original one. I've attached a capture of my script if anyone can help. I'm using a repeating field on a layout that contains graphics. I need the graphics to blend from one to next so they look continuous. The field is defined to show the 5 values of the repeating field horizontally, but there is a small gap between the fields. Is there a way to remove that gap? I made sure the borders are not set between values. Thanks.

Hi. I'm new to FM and have attempted a database to keep track of conversations, issues and incidents within out staff. What I am looking for is to have a hidden field named 'Final Notice' that will show within the employee's profile if they were placed on Final Notice. I have unique tables for the overall employee stats, issues, incidents and conversations all linked by the Employee ID field. Morning, I'm trying to create a database that manages products for sale. The basic setup is very simple. Each product has a unique part number, a manufacturer, a little description, a price and a photo. I would like to be able to search the product database based on the manufacturer and / or the part number. Here's the thing, when I create my layout with a list view, it all works fine. I do not like the list-view look however (the horizontal lines that divide the different parts (header, body, footer) and I also don't like the scroll bar on the side of the window. I'm having trouble entering a new related record in a portal in a new database I have created. I cannot tab to it, or even click on it. I just created a database to consolidate several others that I have used for years. One set is a typical Invoices/Addresses/Products/Lineitems four table database which is working fine. I have exported the Products and LineItems tables to try to create this integrating database. I am now creating a table which records the payments, called Checks. Hello: Am working with two related files, and prefer to add new records to the second file via a portal in the first. Today, I changed the number of rows to display in the portal from 6 to 10. Afterward, I was not able to tab to the next portal row (to create a new record in the related file), as I was able to do before. Now when I press tab, it goes to the next field (outside the portal). Using the mouse, I can place the cursor on the next row, enter the data, and obtain the desired result (i.e., a new record in the second file). Hi there, I'm struggling with a problem with checkboxs. I have a table of 'groups' which lets the user add groups and then add contacts to each group. I would like to be able to speed up the process by using a checkbox on the 'people' layout allowing the user to add a person to several groups ( and also add groups through the 'other' check box) rather than have to go in and add the person to each group in the group layout which would be more timeconsuming. Hello, I am trying to create a cost estimator. I have created 3 tables that are as follows: Company, item Category and Item Sub Category. The "category" table is linked to "company" and the "Sub Category" table is linked to the "category" table. Just encountered a problem with calendar popup when using Leopard Spaces. I'm on Mac OS 10.5.1, FMPA 9.0v3 I have 6 Leopard Spaces setup. My FMP window is in Space-2. The layout has a date field with a calendar popup. Following the date field is a text field with a drop-down menu. When I click in the date field, Spaces shifts me to Space-1 and displays the popup calendar floating unattached. If I select a date, the calendar disappears and the drop-down value list for the next field appears, also floating in Space-1. I reported the bug to FileMaker. I'm working on a membership database/directory for our church. I have created the main layout to be for a family. On a family's record it has Head of Household name, phone, work, etc. It also has the same for Spouse information. Then there are fields for the names of children. I created a report that nicely puts each family into a "directory" with two columns of families per page. So far so good. But now it gets more complicated. I have many advertisers. Each advertiser fits into a category, so there may be 100 advertisers and 25 categories. This will be done in FMpro8 How do I make a simple report that lists all the advertisers sorted by category, above each group of advertisers it displays the category and how many advertisers are in each category. Is it possible to combine 2 portals into 1. For example. Say you have 4 tables. Tables 1 and 2 have records with identical keys. Is it possible to use table 3 to merge those portals so when you look at a portal(of table 3) in table 4, all the records in tables 1 and 2 are shown? I am building a little billing program for the people I work with. Some of them are paid on a daily rate and some on hourly. I was thinking of making a radio button to select one or the other. Then I would like to have one field for data input regardless of whether they selected hours or days. Based on the value selected, the data input page would have a label for "Hours Worked," or "Days Worked." Can my version of FMP recognize a field and adjust the text in a label automatically, or will I have to build two different data input layouts?

We write and process a huge number of SQL queries every day. I can't go into much detail because of an NDA, but what I need to put together is a combination tracking/formatting system. The tests have different numbers of questions, ranging from about 5 to 20, so I need to be able to add tests as I go along, or change the number of questions. Hi Everyone I've been setting up a User Interface made up of splash menus and Reports tied together by scripts to help new users not trained in FMP (some quite young) to navigate a FMP database to look at video-clips and a range of associated "reports". For any new user the "get me out of here" button - Go To Main Menu - is a critical support. However, some of my reports only give their best detail when they are sorted and viewed in Preview mode - which doesn't allow any buttons/scripts to operate. In my customer entry layout I have a portal with a filter so I can enter C and get all companies starting with a C. If I then go to the List layout all customers starting with a C are shown there as well. But if I perform a search in the list layout and return to the entry layout, the search performed in list view is not shown in the portal, the C customers are still shown. Is this just how it is and all searches should be done in the entry layout or is there something I can do so that no matter where the search is done, that search is shown in the portal as well. Ok If I copy a record it should copy the contents of fields but this does not happen, originally I wanted an unused field to have a value N/A so if it isn't used it is obviously not needed. However the auto complete seems to then errase the data when copying the record for the copy at least, not the original..... So how do I keep a new record with the handy feature of displaying N/A but obviously copy data to a new record when you copy the record, this does not make much sense to me.... Thanks in advance....

I have a project that has seperate "modules" (databases), 10 to be exact. When you open the program, you get a control panel with navigation buttons to the different modules; Investigation, Contacts, Research Notes, and so on. The CP is the main menu. I want to have the end user be able to pick from different looks. So I will have, say, 5 different CP's to choose from. For some time I’ve been using repeating fields to hold short-hand keys to data from another table which is then displayed in full on the record via a portal. The repeating field has been the match field for the full data on the other table. But I want to hide the repeating field from my end users, who need to see only the full data displayed in the portal. I am struggling with a concept here. I have a database with a field that contains a URL of an image. For example, http://www.blahblah/images/image.jpg. I set webviewer to use that field as its URL. Great, now I can see the image in my layout. The problem being that I am looking for a way to resize or scale the image in the layout to create a sort of a "catalog". That said, these same images are available to me on a local network hard drive via drive mapping if that is an easier solution. I would appreciate any suggestions... Thanks

I have four tables, company, contact, parking lot, and sweeping event. I've got a very simple fairly-standard Contact Database with two tables, Company & ContactName. The two tables are related through CompanyID and unlimited persons can be added to a company. I have a third file/table (let's call that "Invoices") that "pulls" information from the ContactDatabase via drop-downs and lookups. if a print layout script has run? Reason is if I printout a work order for my assembly people to produce a customers order, then customer changes his mind (as they are prone to do occasionally) - Now I think I need to flag whether a work order was printed, then if changes are made since it was printed, to note in a field W/O Modified Date and Modified By, to be picked up and display only if the modifications took place after the print script was run on that record. I have a value list that is actually a checkbox set. As a new case is created, the number populates this field. It is great since they just click a box and it is referenced to the case. But here is my problem... What do I do when the list exceeds 100 cases? The checkbox does not allow for a scrollbar to accommodate the large and growing set of cases.

I have a login dialog window with one field, into which the user types his initials. There are two buttons, Continue and Cancel. Continue is the default button, and as such I want the user to be able to hit RETURN (or the normal ENTER key on a PC) in lieu of clicking Continue. I'm having difficulty doing that. The login is driven by a script which creates the dialog window, positions the cursor in the name field, sets a global variable to "Continue", and then Pauses. I have an odd problem... Bot sure how it happened but I get popup text appearing on a button I created, however with Filemaker pro 9 I don't think there are any controls for popup text on buttons ? Hi. I can't find out how to do this, but I have a value list that is used in a Drop Down menu. The value list is populated by a "Name" field. So, every Name from every record is in the Value List and Drop Down menu. What I want is to have the Drop Down Menu display only the Names from the current found set of records, instead of all records all the time. Is this possible, and if so how is it done? Can I make a "dynamic" value list? I'm building a solution that tracks a trader's transactions and which 'suggests' the size of the next trade based on various risk thresholds. Would it possible to translate that 'suggestion' (the result of a simple calculation) into a "capped" value list that actually leaves out any values that are greater than the suggestion? Hi - i would like to ask please i have a drop down list field with repetition, how can i get a summary which shows only the fields that are filled in. ex i have 5 repetitions of this field if a record has the 5 filled and another has only 3 filled how can i get a summary of the 8 filled fields rather than showing me the 10 of which 2 are empty? Okay, here's the scenario...I have a series of 'number' formatted fields. In the 'number format...' option, they're formatted as "Format As Decimal" with two digits of precision. These fields are used to enter dollar/cents amounts. I'd like to be able to copy the contents of these number fields, and paste them into a single text formatted field, with carriage returns separating the dollar/cents entries. I suppose this would be considered a merge, since I'm copying data from multiple fields, and am pasting them into a single field. Not sure, though. Hi, I have a value list of multiple publication titles. When a publication is sent out, I would like to select that publication's title from the value list and apply it to all records (recipients), rather than manually going to each record and selecting the value list's publication title in the field. Is there a way to achieve this? I have a main table (Ticket) which contains many "pages" child records (related table) each of which can have any number of "services". So it's a parent-child-grandchild relationship. I'd ideally like to have the pages display in a one-row portal (which can be set to show a different page by changing the value of a related field) and show a second portal inside listing the related services. I'm thinking this may not be possible, since the grandchild "services" portal would be related to the parent "Ticket" and not its child "pages". I don’t know if I'm just fried from trying to figure this out or if I just cant get it. I have a table called Case_Management (w/ __KP_Case_Management_ID) in this table I have a field called Case Number. Is there a way to print portals on a report horizontally through a script or calculation? I have tried to use Line Item reporting but it still lists the field data vertically. I’m a newbie and I am having problems with portal / record navigation. I have a portal (list) which contains a list of employee’s names. I have a set of nav buttons (first, previous, next, and last) which I want to use to navigate the list portal. I use the selected portal row in the list portal to GTRR in another portal on the same layout which displays an employee record (employee). I first had the nav buttons moving between records, which was fine until the employee names were sorted and the record number no longer coincided with the name’s position on the portal. Hi, I have a DB in development now that is a fairly modest creation — not more than 35 run-of-the-mill calculations; some summaries, a little conditional formatting. Not rocket science. Yet every time I enter a value in a field (like a quantity of product), the dependent calculations only update when I move the scroll bar or resize the window... they won't update of their own accord when I tab out of the field. Nor will they update when I force-commit the record. I'm running FM9 Pro on a Mac dual 2.5GHz machine with lots RAM and everything else performs perfectly. Any ideas, please?

I have a portal that users want to see items in the added record order (sorted by ID field), newest item on top. No problem... But then later re-Sort it by a color field to bunch like colored items to together. I can't seem to figure out a way to dynamically allow users to toggle the portal's sort between the ID field and Color field Anyone have a clever trick? Is there a way I'm not seeing? Many thanks.... Hi I am not sure if this would be the right area of teh forum to ask this question but honestly I didnt know what section to start in. My question is this: I have a simple database that i built to keep track of an inventory. For the last year I am the only person who has entered any stock into this database. Now I will be training someone else to enter stock into the database. What I would like to do is when this person enters a record into teh database, that a field will be auto filled showing which account last edited the field and/or entered the record. I have looked and I dont see where I would do this at. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have built a replacement for and excel spreadsheet with filemaker and it is great however there is one BIG problem. Excel will give a preview of an illustrator file, Filemaker will not, so when a file is inserted in Filemaker there is no image, but in Excel it produces the image, this is not great surely there is a way around this so Filemaker can show the Illustrator file :)

I've been running into a problem with conditional formatting that I am hoping someone can help me with. I have various fields that I want to turn different colors based on formulas. What I've found is that if there are too many different colors and if the formulas are too complex, then the conditional formatting gets stuck somewhere and won't work as I want it to. Has anybody else run into this problem and if so what did you do about it? I'd really appreciate the help. I'm using Filemaker for a database of contemporary artists. Sometimes I'd like to change the layout (insert an extra image, add a field)of an individual record without changing the layout of all the other records??? I have a field that makes a Client ID by taking data from the info inserted. It creates a unique id. However I would like to have the end user be able to change it if they have to use a specific id already in use. I keep track of personnel hours in a lineItem table, all the dates and all the hours. The input of those dates and hours is in an 'Hours' table, in a portal, related to the lineItem table, allow creation of records. Every day a user has to make a new record, fill in the date and the hours. I show those records in the portal based on an ID value. Hey, Not sure where to put this topic. I have a text field that is a big box but the problem is when it comes to word wrapping, it cuts off words in a very odd way it might have "finishi" on the top and then "ng" on the next line. I have made several basic databases with containers, they all work great no problems, some are from flat files, some are for related tables etc…just no problems. Now today, I am working on a layout and I add a container (this is also a flat file db w/just a few fields and 1 container). I right click in the container to add a photo and !!!Nothing!!!. I think it’s a mouse problem so I install a new mouse…still nothing. I check all the setting to make sure the container can be accessed and it can be. I then click on the container again and boom..it works. I close out the db and reopen it, and now it will not work. I am lost, has anyone ever had this …

I have created two tables joined by a join table. My goal is to have a filtered portal on the layout of the first table which displays a filtered list in a portal. I'd like to be able to choose one or more of the records that show in the portal and save them to the record i'm working in. Hi, Could some tell me if this is even possible or tell me of a better way of doing it. Our officers go out and take (lets say) 20 digital photographs, they return to the office and start entering their information into the database. Is there a way to either attach that folder of photos to a specific record? I've hit an interface wall. What I want is a tree table view , but I can't think of how to do this in FM elegantly. My goal is a portal of checkbox choices (the parents). Each choice has one or more checkbox choice children. A child can appear in one or more parents, but parents are unique (aren't they now : ). If the user deselects a parent, the children of that parent become disabled for selection. However, a user can select any or none of the children in a selected parent. How can I achieve this in FM? Hi, Does a Footer part ALWAYS "stick" to the bottom of the screen? Is there no way to make it stick to the bottom of a list of records instead? So, aligned TOP rather than BOTTOM. I have only perhaps five, shallow records in a file at any one time and I have a giant void of white space between the last of them and my footer. Many thanks in advance.

I am trying to print a summary of my invoice. It contains products purchased by customers in a portal. The portal displays perfectly in layout mode but if I print the layout the portal area is completely blank on paper, it also does this if I export to pdf. Additionally if I go from layout mode to Preview mode the portal disappears. I can't figure what I've done wrong in my setup, any help will be appreciated! Thanks

I have an ORDERSTATUS field that stores the numbers realted to the names: 1 - Open 2 - Pending 3 - Closed Is there a way to store the number and display the NAME of the status in the field instead of the value? I have overlayed a non-enterable field over it to show the related name but was hoping there is a better way.

Gaaah.... I got myself into a tizzy over what I now know as the "sticky text" issue in popups vs drop down lists. See: http://my.advisor.com/doc/18168 for a perfect explanation. Can one stop lines of text being shaved when printing portals across page boundaries? I am trying to print a directory of departments with department members appearing in a portal below each department field. All fields slide up to produce a continuous list and the 'Allow part to break across page boundaries' is checked. On some pages the top of a portal row prints at the foot of one page (the top of the characters), and the bottom appears on the next page. It appears FM does not know how to deal with widows and orphans. Preventing the part breaking is not an answer as this will mean some pages are only half full (where the following portal has man…
