I have a table Categories, containing fields CategoryName CategorySerial# CategoryDescription . There is a second table Subcategories, containing fields SubcatName SubcatSerial# CatSerial# Data The tables are linked by way of the fields CategorySerial# and the key field CatSerial#. Problem I would like the serial numbers in SubcatSerial# to "restart" from 1 within each Category, rather than simply having a unique SubcatSerial# for each record in Subcategories. Using automatic serial numbers in SubcatSerial# is clearly not the way to do this, but am not sure what will work. Thanks for your suggestions.

Is there an easy way to know when a layout was last accessed using the DDR? My reason for asking is that I create a lot of layouts that are for specific needs. These needs may not last more than a couple months. I don't typically get a "hey, we are done with that layout" comment so we just keep adding to the list. My only other idea aside from the DDR is to create a global field for each layout and have it update with a timestamp/account name using the "OnLayoutLoad" script trigger. That way I know if it has recently been used and who the last person to use it was. I can ask that person if they need it and if not I can remove it from the layout list. Idea…

I'm using the Auto-enter serial number for most of my tables, but if I want to abandon an entry, how do I reset the number in code?

I know that I can copy tables from one database and paste them into another. Is there a way to copy the associated layouts from one table and use them in the second database? Is this option available natively in filemaker or is there any kind of 2nd party software that can accomplish this?

A client has asked me to add some functionality to a database I wrote a few years back in FM6. They want to be able, from any line in a report, to go to the corresponding (related) record for that report. Then from that related record, go back to the report using s "back" button. When the master record exists in the same file, this is not a problem. I simply added a script step to write the Layout number to a field I created called NAVTem before it goes to the master record layout. I have some sub-summary fields that I need for table view but do not want to see in form view. Is there a way I can hide the sub-summary fields in form view but not in table view?

I have a simple layout on which there is a date field (StartDate). "[color:red]Sometimes", when the LO first loads the date field refuses to accept focus. Clicking in the date field results in the field NOT accepting the focus. I can click, click, click until the cows come home and I still can't get into the field. This is propably the most stupid question I've ever made. But I still ask it... : Is it possible to change fields in one layout via script during data input ? I mean, if I type "Cat" in first field, the following fields are changes automatically to fields that are needed to fill up when there is a cat in the first one. This is related to a problem that I described and posted in the "Finding and Sorting" forum. In my database, I have one layout that is a common menu (i.e. button bar) and another layout that shows the list of music (vocal solos for singing in church) in the database. In the list view, if I limit the found set to 1 of 1 (from 1 of 2), and switch to the menu layout, the found set changes to 1 of 2. I verified this by using the data viewer to track the value of the "_found" field in the music table. Hi, I have a layout where all the fields and components seem to stay inside the layout borders, but when I create a pdf or do preview, the data shows up in 2 pages where all the data is on one page and the second page is blank. Hi, I have table x with fields; name, user, date, reason. I need to display a date (not the contents of the field date) but the date the user is currently using. I have a global variable date_looking_at (this is the date i need to display). How is the best way to display this at the top of the page? I did try copying it into a global field and using merge field accept this wont work as i need multiple records as multiple users will be viewing different dates.. Thanks for any help.. Moaa

hey all, I'm having trouble figuring out why my populated container field wont display properly. I was cruising thru a calendar tutorial the second time around and im stuck in the same spot. I've created a container field, populated it, and then created a TO just as the tutorial specified but each time I have done this I havent been able to see the square that is in the container field by going to the field in the TO. I did notice that I was doing a fmpro9 advanced tutorial while using fmpro9. There shouldnt be a difference there if im simply creating container fields, right? I have been trying to keep my data in the database as consistent as possible. Occasionally someone will import some data... and the font will be changed for all of the imported data. I have a layout on my computer that looks fine and prints fine but on a co-workers computer it prints completely different, even on two pages (the other prints in 1). I'm going crazy trying to figure it out. Any suggestions? How do you develop things in this situation?

I have a letter set up as a layout and it uses merged fields to populate the letter. However as the letter expands depending on the data an image of a signature sometimes overwrites the text. Is there a way of inserting the image as a merged field?

I have an annoying page break, represented by a dotted line in the layout view, right across the bottom third of a letter layout. I attach a screen shot. The letter is A4 size, but FM won't let me print it - it breaks two thirds down the page, on the dotted line. I've hunted for a way to re-size the page or move the dotted line, but can't find how to do it. Can anyone please help? Screen shot attached.

I tried to reproduce the similars layout and I cannot get the functions to work would there be any one to look at the file and give me the things I have done wrong. I have a DB with 9 tables, all related by Name and Year. I would like to produce a report that pulls all records from all nine tables that match a Name and ID that i enter, but I am having trouble doing this without the use of portals (which I cannot use because you have to specify their length, and some names have more results than others so this causes problems when printing). I have 2 layouts that share fields. One layout requires large fonts while the other requires small fonts. Is there a way that the same field across different layouts can have a different font or font size across the layouts? It seems that no matter what the field setting, the font and font size are those that were used in the layout where the data was entered. So basically, I want to enter my data in one font size in layout A, but show up as another font size in layout B. The database is for livestock management, specifically for goats. For the present, all the tables I am concerned about are related to the Goat table, in which each record represents a different goat. Each of these related tables gives details about a different sort of thing that happens to a goat; for example, each record in the Symptoms table has a date, a Goat ID, and a symptom, and each record in the Weight table has a date, a Goat ID, and a weight. Hi, FileMaker 10 Mac. Status bar is locked closed. Custom menus are used. I have a simple script which: 1. finds & sorts records 2. goes to pretty layout 3. opens staus area 4. enters preview mode 5. pauses ... ... ... ... ... 6. offers opportunity to print 7. closes & locks status area 8. returns to original layout & enters browse mode. My problem is in FM 8.5 users can navigate through the pages of the report after step 4 using the 'book' to go forward and back. Does anybody know how to set up a FMP8 DB so that the font is absolutely fixed in a field. I have a problem that if people paste stuff from another source in to a field it takes the pasted font. I would like to ‘lock’ the field so it records everything in the font I preset and at the size too, so no other options are possible. Thanks.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows a way to make Table view behave a little like excel. For instance... my first column has item numbers. It would be helpful if I could freeze that column on the screen, so that as I scroll to the right, the item #'s are still visible. Anyone know of a way to do this?

When I go to Preview mode in any of my layouts, i get a grey screen. I click on the Body part definition and I get the object info (see attached image). How can i adjust this. My layouts look fine in Browse mode but nothing in preview. Any ideas? Layout set-up is fine, although the layout setup page margins have changes for all layouts (25 in total). I did a few drawings that explains what I need to do, and what I would wish the system is able to do. (Don’t know if it’s doable) pretty much I would like to see thumbnails of all images that meet my criteria based on my "Find". Then I would like to be able to click on a box right by the image(s) so I can populate a contact sheet 2 columns by 3 rows. I work in a print shop and would like to print large reports on digital laser printers. I have worked with Filemaker since FMP3 but always with Letter or A4 paper sizes and I have never been aware of a "problem" until now. The paper sizes I need are SRA4 (225 x 320 mm)and SRA3 (320 x 450 mm). In layout mode I create a new layout and then select print setup and choose the printer, size and orientation, but Filemaker refuses to acknowledge and just reverts to Letter. The laser printer is a Canon imagePress C7000VP accessible via server. Filemaker is only installed on my computer. I have tried other printers available on the network but same result. Can anyone help me?

Is it possible to Prevent Record Deletion on just one specific Layout? Any other situation is fine... This particular layout is from the perspective of a certain table, but is used for filling in a related table. I don't want the user to get confused and accidently delete the records from the table they are viewing from, thinking it would delete the related tables.

I've recently learned how to use summary fields and subsumary parts. My issue is i'm attempting to create a report that groups vertically rather than horizontally. For example I need a report for widgest sold that groups all the months in one report and the months are the column headers. Hi, all--What's the best way to make Filemaker switch between "left" (even-numbered) page layouts, and "right" (odd-numbered) pages during preview and printing? Selecting "facing pages" in the "Layout Setup" dialog changes the inside margins to print a left and right page view of the same layout. How do i 'turn off' the function for fields to automatically increase in size based on the width of the FileMaker Program? In the layout mode a field looks to be normal, but when i am in browse mode, they expand depending on maximizing the Filemaker Pro window or created a wider windowed version of the program. I have a LAYOUT based on a table (STOCKS) Stocks holds 2 fields: symbol and name On the layout I have a mergefield that shows the stock name and buttons for navigating to previous and next. Question: "How do I get the mergefield to show the names in alphabetical order?" I have sorted the underlying table (STOCKS) and yet it does not appear to be effective. I'd like to work on an application during the business day when users are actively working. Specifically, I'd like to edit layouts that may or may not be in use. Is there a risk of layout corruption or other reason not to actively develop a database in use? The alternative seems to be to work on a copy and have users connect to the new database or work at night. (Note, I searched the forums and can't find this topic - sorry if it's commonly asked.)

I want to have a "useful info" page where weekly one of the guys in the office inserts a PDF into a container field that then is available to everyone on the system, kind of like a noticeboard. Well, in Browse mode a User can omit a field if they wish (vs. 10 table view). I thought (silly me) ... how wonderful because I could use the same layout and add or remove fields (via script) for Save As Excel!! Sometimes Users want a field and sometimes they don't. Firstly, are we not given the ability (in Browse mode AS DEVELOPERS in a script) to show or not show fields? That would be cool because I wouldn't have to create several layouts (each with different fields on it) just for Save As Excel. I use a lot of table occurences. So when I create a layout in Table view, it is likely you will see the same variable listed more than once, but each has its own "Global Variable" to trigger what information you see in that corresponding occurence. In browse mode this isn't really a problem, because you can create labels. But in Table View, the headers match the variable name preceded by "::" Is there a way to change the "Column Headers" in table view? If not, has anyone come up with a reasonable work around?

I was curious if there is a way (either built in or via some plug-in) to display images that the user uploads. I'm making a table to store some scientific data, and part of the data for each row will be a few graphs that the user uploads. I've done file uploads before, where the file is simply saved in the DB and can be downloaded, but does anyone know of a way to display the files themselves in a layout, assuming they were image files? In my "master" layout, information in my fields appear like this: $1,000.00. When I try to merge them into a letter, they appear like this: 1000. I want the monetary merge fields in my letters to appear the same way as in the input fields- like $1,000.00- but I cannot figure out how to do this. I'm a little bit confused on how to display a bunch of related data on a single layout. I'm using to portals to display lists of related easily enough, but what if I want to display form details of a related record (or multiple related records) on 1 layout? Here are the tables/relationships I'm working with... As you can see we have an orders table and an order items table. Pretty straight forward there. Each order item, though, can have multiple "sides" added to it so there's a related table for those. Here is the situation: I have a layout based on STOCKS. On that layout there is a tabbed interface. One of the tabs is OPTIONTRANSACTIONS in a portal. In this portal are all the fields in the OPTIONTRANSACTIONS table. The OPTIONS table holds: optSymbol and optExpirDate (Option Expiraton Date). This feels like a stupid question to be asking, and I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, but I can't figure out how to alter the background color scheme on a layout once I'm finished with the initial layout creation process. I can, of course, create a whole new layout, giving it the color scheme I'm looking for, then paste in elements from the old layout, but that's a cumbersome workaround, one that breaks script references, etc.

Hello, I would like to create a "widget" in my layout which is an Edit box with vertical scroll bar, however, I want the text to be view-only. And if the user clicks in the text area, I want to have a button that takes them to a checkbox set which presents the choices they can choose for that field. Hello all, A friend has a FMP file they have been using in v9 at thier office. The file is for an art gallery (inventory, sales and invoicing)... all integrated into 2 seperate files (the 2nd file containing only the art images). No online functions or anything seeming that complex... just LOTS of seperate tables, relationships, and billions of fields and scripts created by probably 4 previous developers. They need some cosmetic work done on some layouts. I think i can do the changes they need but only have an older version (v7) available to me. I have created a file with 2 tables. Table one is for participant information, and table two is for his/her entries. Each participant can have multiple entries. I want to create one sheet per participant, and include a list of their entries on that sheet. I tried a subsummary section, but it only returns one entry per participant. What am I missing here--what's the best way to accomplish this?

I had 3 windows open looking at different tables from the same solution. One of the windows sort of froze...that is to say I could not close that window and I could not quit filemaker (had to eventually Force Quit). Within the frozen window, I could switch layouts, go to different records, run scripts, and enter data. I could not switch to the other 2 windows, which remained in the background regardless of where I clicked. Any ideas on what causes that behavior? Sorry if this is the wrong forum. I wasn't sure where to start.

Hi everyone. I have a layout that shows all the records in the table. However when I go there I want it to only show the persons records that is logged in at that moment. Hi all I have a text box with scroll bars activated that will show anything from a few lines of data to many, many lines. The text box is set to show 20 lines and users must scroll for anything beyond that. What I would like to do is have the box present the user with the last data entered rather than the first. Any thoughts?

I would like to allow a filemaker user to enter a field in order to be able to copy the contents for a later paste into a different application. I don't want the user to be able edit the field or change it by mistake. I guess I could create a button for copy to the clipboard and leave the field not enterable in browse mode, but that seems a poor work around especially if I want all fields to behave the same way. Is there some secret filemaker dialog box that allows you to enter a field in browse mode and copy but not modify the data? Thanks - Mark Using FM 9 advanced on OSX

Hi All, I'm trying to sort out a profit and loss report, and i was thinking it should be with sub-summaries, but i can't see how to make them only show / take into account certain records. Perhaps an explanation: I have a Database of jobs / costs. I can get a basic p&l report done ok, using a calculation field and summary field method, along these lines: Sales = If (Type = "Sale"; Amount ; "") Total_Sales = Total of Sales (this is a summary field) Doing this for Sales, Cost of Sales, Operating costs etc gives me the totals, and i can tott them up to make a nice basic profit and loss. Hi - Is there any way of making the text in a text field show as several columns? The text I'm entering is a medical history - it would be an advantage to have each symptom and main point on a new line, but then to be able to see it all at once I'm having to use a very tall, thin field. It would work a lot better with the layouts if it were a short and wide field, with the field formatted as several columns - a bit like in a word processor you can typically format a text box as having the text in several columns. Hey all, We've been creating call sheets for jobs but since moving into FileMaker with all our contacts, its becoming a little complicated to create them. Not that complicated but we'd rather stay in Filemaker and not have to use excel. So I'm trying to recreate the template we use in excel in filemaker in a way that records marked as "callsheet ready" would fill up the template automatically. I'm not entirely sure how I should go about this...I have attached the excel template we use. I have a fairly straightforward table (i.e., records appear as a table in View as Table) that sums up numbers in fields using summary fields. The summary fields are placed in the Trailing Grand Summary. In View as List the summary fields display just the numbers that are the sums of values in the displayed records. Unfortunately, in View as Table each summary field is preceded by the word "Total:". Because each column of numbers is very narrow, the printout of the table shows only the words "Total" (or a fraction of it) instead of the actual numbers. Hi, I just upgraded to 10A and I went to make a blank layout and it has lines all over it...I cant tell where the page ends? These are not the ruler lines, these look like page breaks both horizontal and vertical (broken spirals). Is there a way to turn these off? Jim

I have a solution where I have several "small" master data layouts that I have linked to custom menus. the custom menu runs a basic script which opens a new window, loads a layout and resizes the window. The problem I have is that if my start point is my main interface which has a much larger window size the transition to the new window is pretty jerky. If I have a utility (small) window as my start point the new window works fine. Anyone have any tips here for calling "new" windows of a smaller size.

Hello, I created 3 summary reports/layouts in FMP10 and they works fine when I am on FMP10 clients. When I tried to view the summary from FM9 clients it showed that there're records but the view shows nothing. is there any known incompatibility issues in summary for FMP9 and FMP10? Thanks! NESE

Don't know exactly where to put this question. I am converting an application from FMP6 to FMP10. I have been doing the development on the MAC, but it will be cross-platform. I just put it on the PC to make sure it is working and am finding some problems (what seems to work really well on the MAC does not work as well on the PC, such as navigation between tabs and layouts; on the MAC they run very clean, on the PC a lot of flickering and jumping.) So, I am now re-writing scripts to run smoother on the PC. If anyone has some insight into that, I would appreciate your thoughts; but the question I have is on another matter. Hello everyone, First post, please bear with me! In the database I took over the original developer had designed it as one visible window with layouts switching inside it, with no pop-ups. The Client now wants to take advantage of the FM10 dynamic reports and have them pop-out and have two or more windows open. However all the global fields on the layouts are the same so when entering in the global on one layout you also visibly enter on second, third etc layouts. Which will drive the users crazy. Hi everyone, I couldn't find this anywhere and it is driving me nuts. If I am in a table view in browse mode and rearrange the fields, I get a dialog box that asks if I want to save the changes. I have "Save layout changes automtically (do not ask)" checked off in preferences and in layout set up I have "Save record changes automatically" checked. This has only happened since I moved up to FMP10. Is there a way to stop that dialog box from popping up? Thanks Mike
