  1. I have a table Categories, containing fields CategoryName CategorySerial# CategoryDescription . There is a second table Subcategories, containing fields SubcatName SubcatSerial# CatSerial# Data The tables are linked by way of the fields CategorySerial# and the key field CatSerial#. Problem I would like the serial numbers in SubcatSerial# to "restart" from 1 within each Category, rather than simply having a unique SubcatSerial# for each record in Subcategories. Using automatic serial numbers in SubcatSerial# is clearly not the way to do this, but am not sure what will work. Thanks for your suggestions.

    Is there an easy way to know when a layout was last accessed using the DDR? My reason for asking is that I create a lot of layouts that are for specific needs. These needs may not last more than a couple months. I don't typically get a "hey, we are done with that layout" comment so we just keep adding to the list. My only other idea aside from the DDR is to create a global field for each layout and have it update with a timestamp/account name using the "OnLayoutLoad" script trigger. That way I know if it has recently been used and who the last person to use it was. I can ask that person if they need it and if not I can remove it from the layout list. Idea…

    A client has asked me to add some functionality to a database I wrote a few years back in FM6. They want to be able, from any line in a report, to go to the corresponding (related) record for that report. Then from that related record, go back to the report using s "back" button. When the master record exists in the same file, this is not a problem.     I have a simple layout on which there is a date field (StartDate). "[color:red]Sometimes", when the LO first loads the date field refuses to accept focus. Clicking in the date field results in the field NOT accepting the focus. I can click, click, click until the cows come home and I still can't get into the field.     This is propably the most stupid question I've ever made. But I still ask it... : Is it possible to change fields in one layout via script during data input ? I mean, if I type "Cat" in first field, the following fields are changes automatically to fields that are needed to fill up when there is a cat in the first one. "Dog" would end up to different field setup. With Script Triggers it is possible to switch to another layout, but it doesn't work in IWP. I propably know the answer, but still... :

    This is related to a problem that I described and posted in the "Finding and Sorting" forum. In my database, I have one layout that is a common menu (i.e. button bar) and another layout that shows the list of music (vocal solos for singing in church) in the database. In the list view, if I limit the found set to 1 of 1 (from 1 of 2), and switch to the menu layout, the found set changes to 1 of 2. I verified this by using the data viewer to track the value of the "_found" field in the music table.     Hi, I have table x with fields; name, user, date, reason. I need to display a date (not the contents of the field date) but the date the user is currently using. I have a global variable date_looking_at (this is the date i need to display). How is the best way to display this at the top of the page? I did try copying it into a global field and using merge field accept this wont work as i need multiple records as multiple users will be viewing different dates.. Thanks for any help.. Moaa

I've created a container field, populated it, and then created a TO just as the tutorial specified but each time I have done this I havent been able to see the square that is in the container field by going to the field in the TO. The letter is A4 size, but FM won't let me print it - it breaks two thirds down the page, on the dotted line. I would like to produce a report that pulls all records from all nine tables that match a Name and ID that i enter, but I am having trouble doing this without the use of portals (which I cannot use because you have to specify their length, and some names have more results than others so this causes problems when printing).     I have 2 layouts that share fields. One layout requires large fonts while the other requires small fonts. Is there a way that the same field across different layouts can have a different font or font size across the layouts? It seems that no matter what the field setting, the font and font size are those that were used in the layout where the data was entered. So basically, I want to enter my data in one font size in layout A, but show up as another font size in layout B. For the present, all the tables I am concerned about are related to the Goat table, in which each record represents a different goat.     I work in a print shop and would like to print large reports on digital laser printers. I have worked with Filemaker since FMP3 but always with Letter or A4 paper sizes and I have never been aware of a "problem" until now. The paper sizes I need are SRA4 (225 x 320 mm)and SRA3 (320 x 450 mm). In layout mode I create a new layout and then select print setup and choose the printer, size and orientation, but Filemaker refuses to acknowledge and just reverts to Letter. The laser printer is a Canon imagePress C7000VP accessible via server. Filemaker is only installed on my computer. I have tried other printers available on the network but same result. Can anyone help me?

  48. Is it possible to Prevent Record Deletion on just one specific Layout? Any other situation is fine... This particular layout is from the perspective of a certain table, but is used for filling in a related table. I don't want the user to get confused and accidently delete the records from the table they are viewing from, thinking it would delete the related tables.

    I have a LAYOUT based on a table (STOCKS) Stocks holds 2 fields: symbol and name On the layout I have a mergefield that shows the stock name and buttons for navigating to previous and next.     Well, in Browse mode a User can omit a field if they wish (vs. 10 table view). I thought (silly me) ... how wonderful because I could use the same layout and add or remove fields (via script) for Save As Excel!! Sometimes Users want a field and sometimes they don't.     I use a lot of table occurences. So when I create a layout in Table view, it is likely you will see the same variable listed more than once, but each has its own "Global Variable" to trigger what information you see in that corresponding occurence. In browse mode this isn't really a problem, because you can create labels. But in Table View, the headers match the variable name preceded by "::" Is there a way to change the "Column Headers" in table view? If not, has anyone come up with a reasonable work around?

I'm making a table to store some scientific data, and part of the data for each row will be a few graphs that the user uploads.     In my "master" layout, information in my fields appear like this: $1,000.00. When I try to merge them into a letter, they appear like this: 1000. I want the monetary merge fields in my letters to appear the same way as in the input fields- like $1,000.00- but I cannot figure out how to do this. I'm using to portals to display lists of related easily enough, but what if I want to display form details of a related record (or multiple related records) on 1 layout? Here are the tables/relationships I'm working with... As you can see we have an orders table and an order items table. Pretty straight forward there. In this portal are all the fields in the OPTIONTRANSACTIONS table. The OPTIONS table holds: optSymbol and optExpirDate (Option Expiraton Date). This feels like a stupid question to be asking, and I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, but I can't figure out how to alter the background color scheme on a layout once I'm finished with the initial layout creation process. I can, of course, create a whole new layout, giving it the color scheme I'm looking for, then paste in elements from the old layout, but that's a cumbersome workaround, one that breaks script references, etc.

And if the user clicks in the text area, I want to have a button that takes them to a checkbox set which presents the choices they can choose for that field.     I had 3 windows open looking at different tables from the same solution. One of the windows sort of froze...that is to say I could not close that window and I could not quit filemaker (had to eventually Force Quit). Within the frozen window, I could switch layouts, go to different records, run scripts, and enter data. I could not switch to the other 2 windows, which remained in the background regardless of where I clicked. Any ideas on what causes that behavior? Sorry if this is the wrong forum.   82. I would like to allow a filemaker user to enter a field in order to be able to copy the contents for a later paste into a different application. I don't want the user to be able edit the field or change it by mistake. I guess I could create a button for copy to the clipboard and leave the field not enterable in browse mode, but that seems a poor work around especially if I want all fields to behave the same way. The text I'm entering is a medical history - it would be an advantage to have each symptom and main point on a new line, but then to be able to see it all at once I'm having to use a very tall, thin field. The summary fields are placed in the Trailing Grand Summary. In View as List the summary fields display just the numbers that are the sums of values in the displayed records. I have a solution where I have several "small" master data layouts that I have linked to custom menus. the custom menu runs a basic script which opens a new window, loads a layout and resizes the window. The problem I have is that if my start point is my main interface which has a much larger window size the transition to the new window is pretty jerky. If I have a utility (small) window as my start point the new window works fine. Anyone have any tips here for calling "new" windows of a smaller size.

The Client now wants to take advantage of the FM10 dynamic reports and have them pop-out and have two or more windows open.     Hi everyone, I couldn't find this anywhere and it is driving me nuts. If I am in a table view in browse mode and rearrange the fields, I get a dialog box that asks if I want to save the changes. I have "Save layout changes automtically (do not ask)" checked off in preferences and in layout set up I have "Save record changes automatically" checked. This has only happened since I moved up to FMP10. Is there a way to stop that dialog box from popping up? Thanks Mike
