Hello, I have a Membership database with a field that i would like to automate. I have fields: Factory Start, Contribution, and Amount. I wish to have the Amount field populated by automatically working out the total Contributions made since the Start Date. eg: Member started on 01/01/80 - paying £1.50 per week, with today being the 05/09/06 = £xx paid in Contributions. The contribution amounts are: Adult £1.50 per WEEK Juvenile £1.11 per WEEK Retired £2.50 per MONTH Student £10.00 per YEAR Unemployed £2.50 per MONTH If anyone could please help me do this, i'd be very grateful. Hi, I am trying to round up time to the closest 15 mins. Fields: Service Start Time Service Stop Time Billable Time = (Service End Time - Service Start Time)/60 I want Billable time to round up to the closest 15 mins. In other words I want billable time of 61 mins to equal 75 mins. I want 5 mins to equal 15 mins, etc... Thanks! dmg

I am using John Osborne's technique for not displaying an icon in the last portal row if there is no record there (using a global container field and an auto-calculation container field). This works fine. However, I am using it in a database which already has a number of records. The container fields work fine for newly entered records. But the previously entered records do not display the icon on their portal rows. Is there any way the container can be updated for previously entered records on the portal rows? Many thanks, Margita

Hello, I have a formula that checks to see if a related field is empty, and if it is, returns a text error message. If the field is not empty, it performs a calculation and returns a number result. I would like the result to be no more than 2 decimal places long. That is easy to set if the field is designated as a number field, but then I do not get the error message. If the field is designated as a text field, everything works, but the number has too many digits on the right of the decimal point. Does anyone know of a workaround for this? Hi all, I am making a contact database. In it, each person can be a member of certain groups. For instance, Joe Blow is a member of Activities and Newsletter. There are twelve such groups and I have made a checkbox field that contains all of them. When I run a report on group membership, Joe Blow will show up in Activites but not Newsletter. How can I run a group membership report where people in multiple groups will show up in those groups on the report? The report I want to see would look something like... What I would like to accomplish is summarize how many contacts are related to a specific CompanyID when I am looking at the Contact record. Ideally, I'd like to have a field sitting next to my CompanyID field that simply states XX number. I guess a similars summary but without the portal. Can it be done and if so how? this seems like it should be simple but has had me stumped. i'm trying to get the numeric difference, in days or months, of the difference between two dates. one of these date fields will always be later than the other. when i set it up as "datelater - dateearlier" and output to number, then i get fairly accurate results if the difference is a year or two. but i'm doing a longterm medical study and the differences are often 15 to 25 years and filemaker is returning numbers that are usually way off (though, even in this range, they are sometimes almost accurate). what's going on and how do i fix this? andrew

I'm trying to create a database for some sound effects and I'm running into problems with the network aspect. I've got some sound effects on a network share and I've got my container fiedls with a reference to those files and everything works on my machine but if I open the database on another machine on the network it doesn't play the files...the link is broken. How can I view the link or change the link of a container field? is it even possible to do this? I can't store the files in the database for a couple reasons but one of which is it would be huge. thanks for the help!

I have a question that is beyond my FM knowledge. I have a database whose function is esoteric though similar in structure to more normal ones. It consists of samples of charcoal recovered from prehistoric arhcaeological sites. Each sample has numerous types of charcoal (wood, nut shell, nut meat, etc.). There is a table for the samples with information about them, a data table with counts and weights of the charcoal types (related to samples with a sample ID code), and a table of types related to the data with a type code. It is easy to get a total of the charcoal for each sample in a live display in a layout using a calculation field that sums the amount or weight…

I'm having the same trouble now that I did 30 years ago: trying to get a date. :S If you'll open the attached file, go to the Scheduled Checks layout, then record 5, you'll see the problem in the Year-Months-Days columns. (They all use the date in the yellowed Due Date column for their calculations.) Days that are past due are in red (which is what I want). However... Here's the problem: for the 11.16.06 due date, it's really only 2 months, 17 days away. However, as coded into the calculation, FM is saying, "No you don't have 2 months + 17 days left, but 3 months -14 days left." *heavy sigh* You can't argue with logic like that...but I'd rather have the 2 +…

I have a calculation that tracks changes made to certain fields. I want to have a delay built into the calc that allows the person creating the record 5 minutes to complete the first version of the record. The calc see's any edit to these fields as changes, even the very first entry. So I would like to have an If statement that says: If ("Time In" + 5 minutes > Current Time; execute calc; otherwise leave the revision list blank). Any ideas?

Hello all, I have a DB which stores some order line for a sale order. Every record has a code that is the key for a relationship with my supplier database. All the suppliers has a number that represents the shipment days (i place an order to that supplier and - i.e. - he ship the goods within 3 days). Here comes the troubles. I must calculate the arrival date excluding all the saturdays and sundays because they aren't working days! I hope I explained the problem well. Any idea or suggestion to help me?

I have a field in my DB that contains the shipdate for a shipment. Is there a way to set up a popup reminder, let's say two workdays before the actual shipdate? If the actual shipdate is on a thursday, the popup will show itself on a tuesday. If the shipdate is on a tuesday, the popup will show on friday. I have a large database of thousands of books and have now been given hundreds of image files (that I've been able to relate to my book database by creating a separate "image path" table which stores my book ID number and the file path where the related image is stored. The images, however, have been named by the supplier so they do not instantly relate to my database) and I want to somehow, by using the book ID relationship, store the path references in my new container field in the book database so that I can view the image. I think it is pretty cool how you can have a map show up based on an address in a field. I would like to take this a click further. Google Map has this feature where you can ask for directions. I'm new here and very happy to be developing on Filemaker again.. so.... I have video editing software I'm using to export logged clip information. As part of that info, I can export a field with the file path info that describes where a video quicktime is stored on my array. I can import that into Filemaker no problem. I want to set up a container field on my layout that automatically displays the quicktime based on that file path info. Can this be done? The filepath is only the absolute path, not the one relative to filemaker. Since I have over 1000 records per project, this has to happen whenever someone selects a file. To do this, I had hoped to modify one of the starter solutions, but this has proven to be more difficult than I imagined. My first challenge is to create a project number field that updates when jobs are created. I have discovered the serial function, but have a problem w/it. There's another field, DueDate (a Date field), that has a due date of 08.30.2006. With a calculation of DueDate-CurrentDate, a black "6" will appear in the DaysToGo field. Conversely, if I put 08.10.2006 in the DueDate Field, the result is "-14" since I passed the due date by 14 days. Cool. I have a PO# in this format 560800000. "5" stays the same for all PO, "6" is the year, "08" is the month, the five 0s are auto-enter serial number. I defined the PO# as "5 & Mod (Year(Get(CurrentDate)); 2000) & Month Function & PO Suffix". The month func. is if month < 10, add 0 in front, else use the two digit month. PO suffix is just a serial# (00000), auto increment by 1. I'm working on duplicate record script, so that all the info from the PO will be copied, but the PO#. I'd like my shared solution to remember the value of a particular global, even after the files are closed and re-opened. The value is a moving target--it constantly gets updated. Is it possible in FM7 or 8? Or, any suggested workarounds? Thanks much.

I have a table to hold claim data. Each claim I want to assign a claim number to. I would like it to be the Julian Date plus a sequential number. Can FileMaker calculate the julian date? I've got a company details table / database with each company having a unique company code. At the moment the field is set so that it auto enters a serial number with a increment of 1 each time but what i really want is to generate a unique company code based on the name of the company. for example a company called microsoft would have a code of MIC01 and if you added a company called microwidget that would be called MIC02. I have a status field for which I would like to store a date when it is modified. I have Status and Date fields, but don't know the best way to evaluate the contents of the status field for a change - should I make a temporary field which stores what ever is in the status field and when the user leaves the record the temporary field gets replaced and then sets the date if needed? OK, I'm stumped. I've got a multi-table database. I have 2 tables connected by a join table to allow many-to-many joins between the two. Table 1 has an auto-entered serial number id field as does Table 2; they are joined via Table 3 which has its own serial number field and values for the Table 1 and 2 ids. Table 2 is set to allow creation of records from Table 1 via this relationship. So far, pretty straightforward. Need some help. I am trying to use an if statement with a calculation in a repeating field that looks at a non-repeating field with the extend function. If(LH1 >= Extend(HEEL) and LH1 <= Extend(IHEEL) ," ","** **") This works perfectly except when there is no entry in the first cell of the LH1 field. It returns the ** **. If I make an entry then it works perfectly All other repetitions in the repeating field work fine. Any way to fix the first cell? I've tested both clicking and unclicking the " Do not evaluate if all referenced cells are empty"

I read the posts about text formatting/Pasting but could find an answer to my problem. When I copy & paste a formatted text from an extermal source (MSWord, email, etc...) into a text field in FM it does not retain the original formatting (bold, color, underline, bullets, etc...); the text is pasted as plain text. The only option I have under Paste Special is unformatted text. How to retain the original format?

Basically i have this. i have a DB that track students, each student has the statuses of either, Pending, Applied, Enrolled, NonStart, Inact. For a project ( built in 6 ) we have to combine 4 images that were photographed and edited with Photoshop with transparancy. In Filemaker we want to show these photos on top of each other ( 4 ) but we lose transparancy after import in FM. Is it possible? What is the best way? TIA

Is it possible to get a summary based on another field? For instance, I have a database of liquors and wines, their cost per bottle, and how many i have of each bottle. I also have a value list field where I have selected either wine, or liquor. For invoicing, I have set up repeating fields for quantity, size, unit price, and extended price. Unit price and extended price are calculation fields, based on quantity and size. Each field has ten repititions. I can only get the calculation for the unit price field to work on the first repitition. That field remains blank in all other repititions. What am I missing?

I am creating a database that will track votes taken in meetings. There is usually more than one vote in a meeting, but only several meetings a year. I would like to set up a unique VoteID field which should be the date (without punctuation) and a sequential letter. For example, on Jan 1, 2000 we voted on four things: death, taxes, sex, and war (um - not really, but this is just a scenario), in that order. The VoteDate field will read 1/01/2000, but I'd like the VoteID field to be automatically generated each time a new record is generated as: Death = 1012000a Taxes = 1012000b Sex = 1012000c War = 1012000d How do I do that? Hi! I am designing an application that need to store image in a file. I noticed that 44 images (total of 84Mo on HD) goes up to 440mo once I store them in the filemaker file. Is that normal and is there a way I can compress them and keep a good hi res? thank you!

Hello - Apologies if there is an answer to this already - I've looked but not found. I would like to use a Filemaker database to store references to Applescripts. Nothing fancy, just something allowing me to keep a little extra metadata about the scripts. Even the Filemaker Document Library template should work fine. Here's the catch: I would like to import a folder full of scripts all at once and match them up to the container field, the path field, the filename field etc (just like with pictures/movies) but I don't see a way to do that. Does anyone know if there is a way to bulk/batch import files other than image files? Thanks much.

I'm looking to capture double quotes within a calculation for the purposes of producing a desired url For example trying to capture: http://www.xyz.com"abc" How would you script this? I can get to "http://www.xyz" but then I can't figure out how to capture the double quotes because they are inherent operators. I would think it would look like: "http://www.xyz.com"&""" but that doesn't work and for obvious reasons. Is there a substitue symbol I should be using? Forgive me - I'm not a programmer

I'm new to FM Pro so please bear with me. I've created a container field that I want to display a different picture for each record. I'm trying to create a button that will activate that particular container field and open a specific folder on my computer so that I can select the relevant picture for each record. I've managed to get as far as inserting picture with the button setup function but that requires that I select a particular file and all I want to do is open the folder containing the pictures. My solution has four fields for pictures. When I started this was not a big deal but it has grown to thousands of pictures. How do I take the pictures out and replace them with a reference? I am using FM 8 Advanced, thanks, on a Mac. Michael Spencer

I need to figure out a way to show a running total that restarts whenever a certain field changes. For example, I have the following fields: Page Number Space I'd like to show a running total of the Space field, but have that total restart whenever the page number changes (assuming that all records are sorted by page). I've tried using a summary field, with the options of Total Of Space, Running Total, Restart Summary for each sorted group when sorted by page, but can't seem to get it to work. I have created a button to insert an object and it works beautifully. BUT, when I create a runtime solution, the button either does not work or it brings up a "record your voice" thing. I have a Job ticket db I'm trying to set up. It links to another FM file for customer contact info. I would like it to generate a number on the job ticket every time I create a record. But each customer has it's own prefix, so each customer's numbers would be different to the last. i.e I input the details into the FM job ticket Customer A (CA), so job ticket will produce a sequential no. CA0001 - I then input a new record but with a different customer, Customer B (CB), this job ticket will say CB0001. Hi, I have a field with content as follows "505 Woodland Terrace - 3" Which is a Property Address + the Unit. Is there a way I can extract the content of the address and the unit, i.e., use the "-" as the point where the data is split? We have a few distributors and customers who order books from us on a consignment basis. It is simple to set up invoices for the customers who buy outright, and we have an invoicing database started. Hello, I have a slew of calculation fields in one of my files. However, 90% of them are calculations of related fields, and -- as far as I know -- they cannot be indexed. I am using a MAC that is set up to input in unicode and control/space bar shifts to Japanese in any application with no trouble. There is a Container field called "Image" which is on the database, i have also made 2 other Containers called "Image-front" and "Image-back". I have also put arrows below the container field. Hi, I was trying to slove this problem using IF, but I couldn't get it to work. I've found a solution using CASE, but I'd really like to know why the IF statment wouldn't work. I've 4 fields, test 1, value test 1, Test 2 and Value test 2. If either test 1 or value test 1 are empty I want to show graphic 2, otherwise graphic 1. BUT if test 1 is either fail or fail (rust) then test 2 needs to be carried out. So if test 2 and value test 2 are empty then graphic 2 should appear, otherwise graphic 1. I hope this makes sense. Is there a way to make filemaker not share globals between different windows? The only thing I can think of is have example : Window #1 look at line 1 of a global repeated field and have window #2 look and repeated global field line 2. It just seems a little buggy to me because if you close window 2 and open it back up, then you have the old globals from the previous window 2. Any sugguestions? Thanks

hey all, and thanks for any help: here is the issue: i am trying to create an invoice where the description of the purchase appears (field B- currently a calculation field with choose as the function) on the basis of what value is chosen in another field (field A). that field (A) is a value list with four values. all are about 4 words of text. i have tried with field A formatted as both radio buttons and a drop down list, and it didn't work with radio buttons and it (: will only choose the first option in the choose calculation when the other field is formatted as a drop down. any ideas? thanks!

I am trying to get Filemaker 8 to perform field validation (a plug-in that executes a script) when exiting a field rather than when the record is committed (by clicking outside the field or going to another record). It seems this is only possible with a Global field but not a text, number, or date field. The Filemaker Knowledge Base says that I should "use the new auto-enter calculation overwrite feature to trigger this plug-in at the same time [as exiting a field]" but that doesn't seem to accomplish what I want either. What I am attempting to do is create a calculation field that combines a number of other fields for a generated description. The reason I am doing this is to save space on the print layout, sense some fields will be empty. Here is my delima: I have been importing massive quantities of images into a container fields-they are stored as a reference. I have the container set-up to get url-so when I click on the image it open in photoshop. What I need to do is have the image open in photoshop and then save in a specified folder. Another catch-there is a field that allows the user to rename the image if desired-or I will run a script in filemaker to get the first 15 characters of the original file name if the rename field is empty. Hello everyone I have a Custom Value List checkbox with numbers. I am producing a number range according to which values are checked so the range will always produce 1..5 (sorted). This will be used in global variable for searching number ranges (in find script) and not (necessarily) as a field calc. And it may be used for things I haven't even thought of yet. But I wonder if I have over-complicated the calculation or approach? I doubt that I've thought of all possibilities and potential problems with it and would appreciate your ideas. I have two tables: Cause and Disbursements. In Disbursments I have a primary ID. In Cause table I have a Foreign key field that I want to reference the primary ID in Disbursements. I was hoping to create a relationship between these two tables based on Primary ID(disbursements) and Foreign ID(Cause). The foreign key does not seem to be populating with primary key data. What is the best way to get that to happen or to create a relationship between these two tables.

I was wondering if there was any way to create a button on a click (within a picture) like google maps or something. I was trying to do a calculation that is a minimum of all values that are not zero of a numerical field of a related table, but the Min() function only takes pure field names, so I can't do something like min(othertable:field > 0) as it generates an error Can I do this solely with a calculation, or do I need a script to do something like this. I was trying to figure out if I could use the lookup function, but this only works for fields that are invalid it seems. What I really need is something like: min(findRecords(othertable:field>0)) Thanks for any help in advance.

Is there a way to get fileMaker to recalculate everything based on a changed value? For example, i have a sales report I just put together. I have used data from a db that already existed but did not have salepeople listed. I have since created a Salesperson field. the report should show a list of all of our jobs including customer and sales person. All of the records that existed prior to the addition of the salesperson do not show the sales person. I have to manually slect the name. It works for all new work.

I have two database that are related. I have the title of database A being derived from a calculation from B (looks like Title A = Title B ) The caluclation works and the title is transfered and all is good. However now I want to turn the Title field back into a text field and not a calculation. How do I do that and save the text as well? I try telling it to store the calculation but it says "The Calculation "title," cannot be stored or indexed because it references a related field, a summary field, an unstored calculation field, or a field with a global storage." I hope that some of you can point me in to a direction to get this to work. I have a booking system made in fm5 and it keeps track of rooms in a hotel and I would like to make a new version in Fm8. I have tried to import the old files to Fm8 but the result was not very good and it didn�t work. With all the new functions in Fm8 do I believe that it can be done in a mush easier way but the question is where to start. I am creating a ranking system that I want the user to enter a number and when that number is entered I want a bar to appear representing that number. Is there a way to fill a field with a color using a calculation? I want to avoid using a relation situation. Let me know if there is a better way, if not thanks for any help.

Hi All, hopefully this one isn't going to be as hard as I think it is. I want to record my working time for the day, I start at 8:00am and finish at 4:30pm with 30mins for lunch. I've worked out daily total in minutes (480 usually) but I would like to display this as hour and minutes. For instance if I start at 8:10am my total for the day would be 470 minute and I would like to display as 7:50. This last part I can't work out - Is it possible? Thanks Pedro -)

I can't test this right now so I was hoping some of you know ... I use a Modification Timestamp (auto-enter called ModifyTS) but not all clients have the exact same time. I want to switch to a host-based idea. Since we can't use an auto-enter (HOST Modification TimeStamp), would the following new calc (auto-enter, Replace) work? Let ( trigger = ModifyTS ; Get ( CurrentHostTimeStamp ) ) The auto-enter modifications is the only thing that I know of which will fire when ANY field within a record changes. Is there a way I can duplicate (copy & paste ??) the contents of a specific field for all the records in a table? So far, I can't seem to use the 'select all" feature to highlight the field for all records; it just works for a single record. There are no unique fields in the table that I can use for a lookup on a new field. My objective: I have a table with about 1,600 records. I have a DB that requires barcode fonts @ 10 or 12 pt to fit in a line item layout .... using Intelliscanner hardware (which does work fine). I have downloaded "Free 3 of 9" and added them through OSX's Font Book but they are unavailable in FM for some reason. Also, apparently, some barcode fonts also have "stop and start" features. Any information on where to get the right one would be greatly appreciated.

I have a calculation field defined as: If( not IsEmpty(x),If( IsValid(x), 1, 0),1) Field x is defined to be "strcict data type" numeric only. However, when field x = "15/yr" or "10-15" the calc field is resulting in 1. Shouldn't IsValid return false in that case? Thanks in advance! Courtney

when I create a field and select auto enter and tick data it dosen't do it. e.g. I create a field called is printed I go to auto-enter and type No, but it dosen;t do it... fields that are already created with auto-enters work but if I duplicate them the duplicate dosen't work it's the same when I try to enter date etc etc.

I'm having trouble doing an alpha sort on a last name, first name field that I created as follows: 1. the original field was first name last name (no comma) (field #1) 2. using left and right functions to break down field #1, I've been able to create a new field: last name, first name. (field #2) My problem is that I cannot do an alpha sort on the new field (#2). Is this because it's a calculation field instead of straight text field?
