Is there a way to make a file not show up in the portal if its flaged? example...these are my files White this is flaged WLT WST WMT Black this is flaged BLLT BLST BLMT the White,Black, and WLT,WST,WMT,BLLT,BLST,BLMT are the same field named SKU I don't want the White and Black to show up in the portal. Just the actual SKU's. How would I go about doing this?

Simple family database. Two tables: households and individuals. One to many relationship between them. Simple layout showing household records with a portal showing individuals in each household. Both tables have a surname field. (Sometimes household surname and individual surnames are the same, sometimes not.) For Individuals::Surname I’m using an auto-entered calculated value giving the Households::Surname as a starter. Using the layout with the portal, I create a new household record, then move into the portal to add individuals. I've produced a report, and am having trouble displaying the jobname field, as some of the records contain a "?" instead of the value. Now I know that the field is smaller than the actual title, hence filemaker substitues ? with the title, but is there a way where I can force FileMaker to display as many words that will fit in that space as possible - without the need for creating another field with a calculation. I have been looking around these forums for more than a week seeking all the info I can about portal filtering. There are some pretty ingenious work arounds for 1 to 1 and 1 to many portals but I am having difficulties moving these ideas to many to many. Let's use the classic Class and Student example. A class has many students and a student many classes. The first included example shows these two tables with a join table between them. Now, in the class layout it makes sense to be able to filter the portal to allow a teacher to see which students are present, sick, or excused. However I cannot get it setup correctly to do that. Hello, I have been using FM8 on my home computer and office computer, the program acts differently on each one. Office: when moving items around in layout, there are some serious pauses as I move. It is very slow. Is this to to do with a graphic card, or is there a setting that I can modify? Home: when opening FM, it loads slowly, taking about 40 secs to open a file. At my office, it is almost instant. My computer at home is older, so I would assume a memory issue? Thank you, Michael

I have an orders database that I am attempting to set up. There are three related tables that seem relevant to the problem. Inventory --- Contains data about all items which can be ordered. Orders --- Contains data about each specific order. each order can contain multiple items. OrdersLineStorage --- Acts as a join table between Orders and Inventory. I am trying to be a "good FMP programmer" and use the tabs as opposed to my own navigation...OK. I want to be able to find records within a tab and then on the same tab show the found list with a portal with a vertical scroll. Problem: Portals cannot be used unless the data is "related" somehow. Solution? Create a relationship based on a random number that is placed in every found record utilizing and then . Whala the found set is shown in this same tab with a scrollable portal. Problem: anything over 2,000 records shows a noticeable slowdown because of the replace command. Does anyone have a better solution to show a found set in a tab? Thanks in advance.

Hi ! I have again a new problem... I have created a portal (showing only 1 row) with correctly defined relations. But what ever I try there is always only the first related record. And I wanted the latest to be shown. I have tried to sort the related file and define the portal so that it would sort the related record with no results. I there a way to Insert a row in a portal that will seperate records with a Heading. example... BLACK BLST BLLT BLXLT WHITE WST WLT WXLT I need it to seperate the entered records for readablity. And when you enter BLACK(maybe from a dropdown list that's BOLD text) in your next drop down list, you only get whats available in Black? I hope this is clear. Hi I have a portal on my Overview layout showing records from a Quotes database that I'd like to filter with a series of 5 radio buttons: Faxed, Emailed, Approved, Requoted and Abandoned. Each radio button has three states--'Yes', 'No' and 'Don't Care'--which indicate how you want the filter to work. I have a value list that auto-populated with records from another table. Since there are about 500 items on the value list, I'd like to be able to search the value list -- as of now, the only "search" capability i have is to type a letter and it'll take me to that point in the value list. Is there a way to put in a term and have the value list reduce itself to those related records that match? thanks for your help.

I could have sworn that I heard somewhere, maybe at DevCon, that with FileMaker 7/8 you could use buttons on a layout while in Preview Mode. My feeling now is that I am wrong, because my tests have proven me wrong. Anyone know the actual answer to this?

Hi all, Is there a way that you can save a tab when switching layouts? Let me explain. I can script going to a specific tab using go to field. But if the user goes to another layout using the drop down menu and then goes back to the tab layout, the tab changes. I know I can script this, but unless I hide the status area and force layout changes to be made by script, I don't know how to accomplish this. any Ideas? Thanks in Advance

I am currently working on a work order database for my employer. I have a key in the employee information table called the pawprint which is a unique user name for each employee. This information table also includes their location, phone number, etc. My problem is that I want to be able to enter this pawprint in a blank in my main Work Order table, and have the name of the person, which is uneditable in the blank below it. I have a report that lists payemnts received ona specific day. I woudl like to SUM up the payments amounts for the day and get a count on the number of entries. I ahve tired to doa Column List/Report format, group by Payment Date and tell it I was sub totals and grand totals. Merry Christmas! Sure could use some advice/suggestions for an unexpected problem I'm experiencing getting merge field boundaries to behave appropriately on my printouts. Presently, there is an blank space occurring where no data occurs in a merge field. I want text to automatically shift left (and/or up) when data does not occur in the preceeding field. Hello, I am quite new to Filemaker and currently building my first relational database, I need users to be able to assign customers to active jobs (of which there are 1 - 10 at any time).I want a valuelist to contain the contents of the job field but only all records that are "active". OK, I have a PO system with a line item portal. Pretty standard, from my understanding. The portal records are related by Purchase Request #, so the recid of the purchase request is auto-entered into the line item, hence the record in the line items database. I have a line item total, now I just need to total all the line items with like por#'s. I really have no idea where to start with this. Please help! Thanks!

I have a Filemaker solution that was created in FM6. When we used the FM6 version, we could print on W2 Forms. Now that we have converted it to FM7, it doesn't work. I'm using a 8.5 by 11.0 sheet of paper that is perforated in the center with all the W2 boxes preprinted. I can get the first W2 to print right, but the second one is off by .25 inches and no matter what I adjust (Page Margins, Body Size) the darn thing won't work. Can anyone help me?

I have a layout with (Records showing from ProductDetails) I also have the InventoryTransaction Table in a portal on the same layout. I use the portal to enter inventory into the InventoryTable. This works just fine. But when I want to do an Inventory(List) (Records showing from InventoryTransactions) The transactions show up but have no Idea what Product they belong too. Why can't the InventoryTable see the ProductDetail table? Is it a one to many issue? if it is, how could I fix that. Or is it a layout issue? I'm so confused. Thank you in advance

I've spent the last 1 1/2 hours reading and searching to find this answer so please help. I'm sure I'm missing some stupid little step hear. We get paid monthly advances towards our final billing. I'm putting together an invoice that calculates the total fee and deducts advances and gives me a balance. My first thought was to have a summary field that sums all advances. I put this in a portal on the advances layout. Then I would also calculate the final fee (Based on a percentage of the annual salary) and write another calc that would deduct expenses from fee_amount. Hello, I'm new to FilemakerPro 8. I've created a database with a bunch of fields, but each field only displays the first line, and only prints out the first line. I have to click on the field for it to show the entire data. How do I make the field bigger in order to show the entire text data? I have a weird situation -- some of my fields display text as Titlecase, even though the field is formatted as plain text. The field is a plain text field, without any auto-enter calcs. Try as I might, I cannot enter a capital letter in the middle of a word, which is frustrating for some names. (Also, if I try to redefine the font as "lowercase," it still displays as Titlecase.) Other fields on the same layout do not have the same problem. What could be going on? Also, if you have an answer to this one, you might know how to strip and then add formatting, which is necessary to output to Word and other programs. I have a layout that lists tanks. I have a portal that lists options for that type of tank. There are three types of tanks, liquid, nonpressurized, and pressurized. I have a button in the portal that adds an option from the list when you click on the button. I want a field that tells them if the option has been added to that specific tank. I have three tables. I hope this will be the right section as Reports, Printing and Publication does not seem to have a portion devoted to Reports. I have a template completed with four layouts in one file in FM6; the four layouts comprising Tasks, Materials, Delivery and Buyouts. Each record is for either Tasks alone or with Materials; Delivery or Buyouts and are all identified by Job_Number. I have a simple database with two tables: People and Donations. The People table contains contact information on donors. The Donation table contains records of each donation. The two tables are linked via a Person ID number. The list of donations from the Donation table appears in each record in a layout in the People table via a portal. All of this works fine. Last question and I think I am done with this solution. Thank you for all of the help I have recieved. Is there a way I can "click" on a record in a portal and navigate to that specific record. I thought I could use the script step "go to related record" but it doesn't seem to be working. Has anyone experienced problems with the "Change to hand cursor" suddenly not working on Mac OS Tiger? Specifically, a file I'd been working on suddenly lost its ability to change the mouse arrow to a hand when it was over a button. The checkbox for this feature is still checked in the Button Setup dialog for every button of every layout in the file but none work. I quit FM 8 Advanced and opened the file with FM 7 Developer and got the same results. Other FM files still work fine. I then copied the solution to my Windows machine and opened it there and it worked fine. I closed the copy on the Windows machine and copied that copy back to the Mac. That copy of a …

I'm working on a database with, from left to right, the following tables (and TO's) bound with relationships: teachers - programming - course - enrolment - student In teachers I have connected (through programming) a teacher to a course. And in students I have connected a student (through enrolment)to a certain course. I have astablised a portal with information from teachers in student. This shows the teacher that is leading a certain course. So far so good. But there are courses who have more than one teacher. Hello. Is it possible to allow the user of a standalone Filemaker solution to create and modify layouts (for printing) while restricting their access in layout mode? Also, can scriptmaker be used in layout mode at all? My idea is to provide a layout screen where say there is a custom panel for the creation of the allowed fields (the status area will always be hidden). The user can move and resize these fields to all them to create a truly custom layout.

Here's my problem (fm6). I have 2 files, parents and students. Students have elementary and high school students. I need a list of all parents with their elemntary children sorted by number of elementary children they have. The key from parents to students and back is parent id. I created a calc field in students that comes up with a 1 if elementary child(call field EL). In parents I have a field that is the sum of that field in students (call it SUM_EL). Then in parents I have each record with family name and a portal of child with grade. I can sort it by SUM_EL but the problem is I can't just choose elementary children from students. It does all. I can't see any way of doing this in filemaker from what I have seen so far. The only other option is either hidding the fields that don't apply, or making them unclickable and still appear on the screen. So is it possible to hide a field based on the item selected in filemaker? Or is it possible to disable fields based on a selection in filemaker? Thanks.

Hello I've created a database that archives all of our company emails. There are currently over 5000 records in the database. I've tried using a portal and a custom sort key for subject, email name & date. Sorting the portal can take up to 10 seconds or more, so its quite slow & painful to use. The custom sort key is a global field and is unstored so indexing can't be turned on for this field. Is it that portals are just to slow for this and I should stick to list views? Or am I doing someting wrong? Main reason I wanted to use portals, I can have a highlight field in a row, I can also multiselect rows (with a hightlight as well) and the interface is quite …

I have two portals with the same table for both. In one I have a one line list of three fields. The second portal is all the information from the table. I want to be able to click on a row in the first portal and have the second portal go to the same record to display all the information for that specific row. Is there a way to put the focus on another portal when you are in one already and to select a portal row based on a primary key? I was reading on another forum that this was possible but the person didn't explain how to do it. Thanks.

I am a beginner using Filemaker 7. I have a database with several text fields and one value list per record. I am wondering if there is a way to change the color of all the field text depending on what item is chosen from the value list? For example, I want item 1 in the value list to be red (is there even a way to make items in a value list different colors?) and when I select it all the text for that particular record changes to red. Then I want all the other items to be different colors and change their text accordingly. Or is there an easier way to do this differently? Thanks.

Hey hey, I have a file that holds my scheduled meetings (let's say 4) per day. I would like to show, through a portal, these four meetings. But hold on, it gets more complicated. What I already have set up: I have a portal that is set up as a relationship (Menu::Date <=> Events::Event_Date). So, of course, the portal will show all records pertaining to field Date in the database "Menu." The problem is, if I don't have a meeting, there is no record entry in the database "Events" for that meeting because, well, the meeting doesn't exist. In our database, each record requires varying amounts of image containers. The images need to be large to show the detail required. Since we need to print reports (and save PDF's) of these records- and the reports can be many pages- what is the best way to be able to only have the number of large image containers necessary for each record. We want to embed and not link the files. I have a layout on it with several portals.. it is a calendar layout.. (pic attached) i'd prefer not to use vertical scroll bars because it makes the layout look messy and even if I did, I'm concerned that the user might not know enough to go looking for what is beyond the field of view Is there a way to do any of the following ? 1. generate some sort of count of all the records shown by each portal, then based on the greatest value, switch to a different layout ? I've been developing on a Mac, where I've been pleased with the look of the layouts and the handling of the windows. Now, when I've put the system on a client's PC, many things are different -- color, hairline lines, font smoothing, etc. -- it doesn't look nearly as good! Worst of all, I have not figured out how to control the FMP Pro Window frame on a PC. I basically want to Resize to fit, and then adjust the FMP Window to fit that, and then adjust to maximize, so that you don't see a double frame (with two scroll bars -- very confusing!). Is there an easy way to control this?

I have an inventory file that holds the details of products sold: item number, description, upc/barcode, retail price, wholesale price, etc. When a wholesale customer comes into the store, he picks out the items he wants and indicate to our sales associates how many pieces of each he wants. Does anyone have a clever way of displaying more than one portal in any given area (one at a time obviously). I am trying to show a breakdown of some departmental totals and I only have a limited amount of space lets say 2 square inches. When I click on any one subtotal I would like to be able to display the breakdown of that subtotal on my 2 sq inches. It strikes me I am going to have to use a different layout for each portal but I wondered if there was any smoke and mirrors I could use to avoid these extra layouts cos that would be really neat. I can;t believe in all of the years I have been using FMP that I have never had this need, but I fianlly do and now, I don;t know if it can be done, or how to do it. Can I display on one report, the result of multiple searches? What I need to be able to do is show how many times an employeed did "X" activity over a period of time. Then I would like to display results in a format that shows yearly totals, monthly totals, and weekly totals. I have a problem with a drop down value list that is not populating. The member table had 10 new records added The fullname field is a concatination firstname& " " &lastname. On another layout (Trip) I have a have a value list that is picking up the values from the the member table via a relationship between the two tables Trip:member_fullname to Member:member_fullname. What is happening is when I enter the field a drop down list shows only the last 10 records (total 65). If I select a name the error message "value list is defined to contain exisating values only. I have a database with three main tables: Reports; Projects: Evaluations. In each report, we evaluate the progress of about 20 projects. Each project is evaluated according to 5 criteria (relevance, efficiency, effectiveness, impact, and sustainability). Each project can be assigned any one of six possible ratings for each of these criteria (-2, -1, 0, +1, +2). For each report, I want to summarise the number and/or value of projects by criterion and by rating. This is a simple matter if I take one criterion at a time. I'm using a system to highlight a portal row by using a calc field which picks up a chip from a repeating container field. The calc result, clearly, is container. The individual rows pickup their "highlight" chip just fine, but the open last row of the portal (this portal allows record creation) also picks up the highlight chip. How can this be? There's no data for it to link to. How can the nonexistant calculating container field pickup data from an unrelated (no key fields filled) table? Please help.

Hello all. I'm trying to create a table view of a flat Filemaker DB that includes all 89 fields in my DB. I go through the "Create New Layout" steps and select "Move all fields" but when I view the table, it cuts off the last few fields (stops at about 80). According to Filemaker, the column limit for a table view is 4000+. There is no logical reason for the fields to be left out. They're all simple text fields. There are a few that have repeating values, but they show up fine. I'm using FMPro 8 and tried fixing this in 7 on both Mac and PC, but nothing seems to work. The view keeps dropping fields. Hi everybody: I am having trouble filtering a portal. I have a standard Invoice table linked to an InvoiceItems table. The Invoice table has a calculated field InvoiceTotal with the following expression: InvoiceTotal = sum(InvoiceItems::Linetotal) On the graph I have Invoice and Invoice2 with the following relationship: CustomerID = Customer ID and gAmount < InvoiceTotal (gAmount is a global field in Invoice table) The portal (Invoice2) placed in the Invoice layout does not filter by amount. Hi all, I've got a database of people, and I want to display a list of addresses (home, work, etc) for each person, related by an ID number. Because addresses have lots of different formats, it seems like the best way to do this is to enter the data in several fields, and then concatenate them with a calculation that does some formatting and leaves out empty fields. I've got this working, and I can display addresses in a portal nicely. Hi all, If I recall, the custom menu feature does not allow the selective greying out of commands from the menu. I know that the choices under the insert command are greyed out unless a container is selected first. However, I want to disable any menu. I dont think FileMaker allows this. Has anyone figured out a way to do this without using Dacon's? We want to standardize the menus across the solution, and those submenus / scripts that are not needed for certain layouts, we would like to 'grey it out' Thanks. -John

I have a client database that we use on a regular basis, runnning in FileMaker 8. Displayed in this client layout is a portal containing the user contact information. Such as; Name, Phone, email. I am tring to create a script so that I can click a button in the portal row to send an email to the user of that row. This works for the first entry in the portal. If I click the button in the second or third portal row the email is always addressed to the email recored in the first row. Any ideas how I get my script to pick up the email address from the second or third row?

See the attached file. Users enter in names with different formatting which looks ugly in a drop down list. For consistency (all caps) I created a calculated field combining first and last name. I formatted the calculation to be uppercase. However when creating a drop down list on data_entry_field based on this calculated field (cap_combined) the formatting is lost. Some names are caps, some lowercase etc. Is this a filemaker flaw? test5.fp7.zip

Hi Folks, I'm looking to create a contact database in filemaker 7, however the template I downloaded isn't cutting it for me, so I thought I would post my question here. I'd like to create a contact database, but would like it to be connected to the Oracle Tables I have at work. Here is the kicker I would like to be able to track how often each person is contacted. For my data entry fields I would like all the fields to be boxed in with borders all the time. In browse mode if I have not mouse clicked or tabbed into any of the fields to enter data the appearance of the layout is the way I would like. However, once the mouse is placed into the field to select a radio button or enter text, all the other fields on the page seem to "fade". I.E. all the borders become dashed lines instead of the hard boxed-in lines previously there. I pulled up the filemaker example solutions that come standard and those had this same effect as well, but when I looked at some other example files I had lying around this effect wasn't there.
