I have just upgraded from Server 7 to 9 (actually demo version to see if I want to). Two major problems came about, can't configure the Web server for PHP and disconnect from server often. As you can guess, the later is more important. What seems to be happening is after 5 min. it stops the Filemaker server. I am running Windows server 2003. If I go into services, it says it is still running. But when I open the Admin Console, it shows it is off. I have to start it and then go open all databases. Is this a "trial" limitation?

The server box shows the correct time. But the Admin Console shows one hour early. My question is ... where does Admin Console get its time? The system date/time has not been changed; nothing else has happened on this box - it was opened, files were served and the time is wrong. Anyone have this happen? Of course I can unserve the files and re-serve and it might fix itself. But even if it does, that wouldn't answer the question of how the time could have been off and that is why I want to know where it grabs the time from. I would have assumed it would use its own OS date/time, right?

We have an issue where every now and then IWP becomes unavailable. I've confirmed the following: -All services are running -Databases are accessible When this happens, we've tried restarting necessary services. Usually, we have to reboot the server and everything is okay. We also modified the registry according to FM. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/149532/EN-US/ Anyone have a similar issue?

Who is responsible for setting the date/timestamp on files that are served ... FMS or the operating system? The reason I ask is that, when files are unserved (and there has been data changed) the date/timestamps should update with the time the files are closed, right? Sometimes they don't update - they can be an hour to four hours earlier even though, when reviewing the data, the modification timestamps verify that the data was actually changed. So when the Admin Console locks up (quits responding) and we have to close services (won't even respond to command line prompts), many times the file timestamps are hours off! That is why I'm asking who is responsible …

For some reason our FileMaker Web Publishing engine keeps stopping. I try to restart it through the Web Admin Console but it does not get it going again. It works sometimes after I reboot the computer...but hours later when I check it from my browser it tells me that Web Publishing has stopped again. I have reinstalled the Web Publishing Engine twice (using the latest available update) but I keep running into the same problem. Does anyone know what could be causing this problem?

I have a new laptop that isn't connecting to my server like its predecessor, the exact same model. MacBook Pro running Leopard 10.5.4. The Server is running FMS 9 under OS-X Server 10.4.11. On the Server machine I can launch the Admin Console just like always. But on my laptop, I get an error that begins with this General text in the Java Web Start: An error occurred while launching/running the application. Category: Invalid Argument Error Could not load file/URL specified: file://localhost/Users/[my user name]/Library/Caches/Java/cache/javaws/http/[my ip address]/P16000/AMadmin_console_webstart.jnlp I suspect there is something I need …

Hello all, Running OSX Server 10.5.4 with all of the latest updates. Just installed FIlemaker Server Advanced. Everything during installation seems to have gone normally. When loading the server admin web page, it downloads a file, then that file launches Java, as it was designed to do. Java throws up a certificate warning, as expected. After Java launches, we get the error "The Database Server is not available. To edit server deployment, please start the Database Server first". Now, I've already googled that phrase and found an post on this site about that same error. The solution presented there did not work. I've tried removing and reinstalling FM Serv…

This is my first real experience administering a db with Server. I'm working with Server 9 on a Mac Mini. I understand I should not edit the db "schema" while the db is being served. Does "schema" cover anything else besides field definitions and the relationship graph (ie everything under Manage Database....)? What about the other "Manage..." like Scripts, Custom Menus, Custom Functions, Value Lists, External Data Sources, Accounts & Privileges? Layouts? What is meant by the db "not being served"? Does that mean I simply need to close (pause?) the db via Server and then open it with my FM9A or do I need to shutdown Server itself? What procedure…

Hi, I'm running FMS 9.03 on a Dual Core Xeon Mac running Mac OS Serrver 10.4.11. I just installed an OS Security update (don't know which one because my update log is empty...maybe because I zapped the PRAM?) and now I can't use the FM Server Admin Console. I keep getting the message "Unable To Launch FM-Server.local". I can still manage FMS via Terminal, so it appears that the problem lies with the Admin Console. I've used Disc Utility to repair permissions and I've rebooted twice, once while zapping the PRAM, but nothing has worked thus far. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm supposed to be testing a server-side script this afternoon, so having the cons…

Hi Guyz, I need help, I have been using Filemaker Advanced V9 for some time and previous versions. But I have never used the Filemaker Server and wanted to increase my knowledge skills and even purchase filemaker server. I have downloaded the trial version of Filemaker Server 9. I have installed it using (no-ip) I have also open ports 5003, 16000 & 16001. If I open the client "Filemaker Advanced V9" on the same machine, I can see the file which is being hosted by the server. Works great. Now If I open another laptop and try to connect using Filemaker Advanced 9 Via the no-ip address I don't get any file's hosted by the server. I have even tried to…

I have a very curious tale to tell. At 19:11 on 15th July, FMS 9 launched a server-side script that appeared to execute successfully. However, no further scripts were launched after that time (and they should be every 5 minutes). The solution was used throughout the day on 16th July. The users of the solution reported that it functioned fine. (The server-side scripts perform non-vital tasks so their failure went unnoticed). At 17:00 on the 16th July, it was noticed that fmserverd was using 99% of the CPU constantly - a symptom that we have noticed before, of a server-side script being stuck in a loop. All clients disconnected from the solution, and we …

I have a client (far away), who wants to limit WAN access to the hosted files, to only a couple of top-level privilege sets. He is not using Active Directory, though he is on Windows, using Server 9 (I believe). I am not much experienced with this kind of Server management. He especially wants to block LAN users from going home and accessing the files from home. I don't particularly see this as a big problem myself, as the users have fairly limited access; no Export, Editing only menu set, etc.. Anyway, if Active Directory is the only viable option, then perhaps we should use it; but I'd rather not, because I cannot go there to set up or fix it, and he may not …

I was asked today to clone a database with no data in it. I thought this would be an easy task but it turned out to be very tough. Here is what I attempted, note that I never found the solution. I tried to copy and paste the database file itself, however when I opened it I couldn't do anything, it was not modifiable, despite the fact that I am logged in as an Admin. I checked the privileges on the file itself and everyone had read & write (strange?). Anyways so I canned that idea and tried something else. I read some things in the knowledge base and found that there was a "Save a copy as" option in the file menu. I opened my database and then pulled down my …

Just ran into a nasty situation. Without knowing it, a db file on our FMserver 9 corrupted, 10 days ago. Then yesterday the server needed to be restarted, and that is when we notice the db would not open. We would like to add a check for this in the future and one way I was thinking was to schedule the server to close and open all files each night. That was if the file doesn't open we can catch it sooner. I can see in the Admin console there is an option to run a system-level script. - Has anyone does this on a Mac server? - Preferred script would be close and open files.

Hello All, I've got a client that is having issues hosting FileMaker Pro over their WAN. The server physically resides at their central office and they have five satellite offices that connect to the filemaker server. As of a week ago, one of the offices was unable to connect to the server. After hours of troubleshooting, we discovered that the route was good between the offices. WIth that established, I then configured the router to point to a FMP client (That was hosting a file) rather than the server machine. The office having trouble was able to connect over the WAN to my FM Client. I then went back to the server and tried turning off SSL and reconfigured …

I have been trying to find a problem with the admin console on my server for some time. I have now managed to isolate the problem to the MobileMe system update mechanism. The problem Admin Console launches, but reports that the database server is not running. It reports that WP is running. In fact, the database server IS running, as I can happily connect to it with clients and IWP clients also. Admin Console reports this problem whether launched on a G4, G5, Intel, 10.4 or 10.5 system. Further, command-line fmsadmin on the server ALSO reports the server is not started. So, it looks like the server-side java app that talks to the admin console and to fmsadmin, is…

This file has been access by other users last week but for no other reason it suddenly close for sharing. Okay, pulling my hair out here... I have setup the AutoUpdate feature of FMS 9. I followed a tutorial by Geoff Coffee which carefully explained how configure the server and plugins for deployment. I created the scripts necessary and I keep getting a "-5" error which means that the file cannot be downloaded into the local extensions folder. Oh yeah, this is an all Windows environment. The FM server is on a Windows 2003 box. I have tested from multiple clients with the same result. I have searched FMI's KB resource and poured through the server documentation, but am coming up dry. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there! I am desperately trying to make a backup to a location different than the server itself. Since the previous topics didn't quite answer my question I think I will post another topic about my issue. I have a FM8 script scheduled to run every night. Most of the time it runs okay. Even if I run it manually it will work fine. However sometimes when it runs it will halt and give a license conflict error message. But since the server has a legit license and no one else is around to use FM how is it that the error is occurring? I come back the next day and run the script manually and it works fine. The logs don't show anything untoward so how am I supposed to troubleshoot this problem?

I have two doctors on the same network that want to each have the same FileMaker Pro data file sets without interfering with each other. They will never need to access each other's file sets. I see 2 possible ways to do this, if it can be done at all. Keep in mind all computers are on the same network switch. I want to keep them both on the same IP Address scheme so I don't have to have multiple Isp connections, routers, and switches. #2 - Simply rename all of the file sets, so in essence One file set is for "Smit…

I'm unsure whether to post in ScriptMaker or here ... We are firing scripts from FM Server and two scripts have been fired at once within FileMaker. I know this because of the overlap of resulting records which were created (I can show everyone if they wish to see the proof of such an overlap). My question is ... shouldn't FM Server finish one script before starting another? Each of the two scripts in question fire their own sub-scripts. But it is my understanding that one script (including all of its sub-scripts) should finish before the next script can even start. But that is not what is happening. And the two scripts firing together is causing problems f…

I have given my .sh file executable permission, and the first line in my file says #!/bin/sh. Any idea what I could be doing wrong? Thanks..

I'm trying to setup a 3 server test enviornment. My FMSA9 and WPE server's are located on-site and my web server is located off-site. When I go into the Deployment Configuration and I select 3 machines and then I get to the drop downs where I'm suppose to fill in the domain of my web server and web publishing engine I can't seem to make that work. The WPE part is working fine but when I put in my web server's domain and hit Lookup I get the following error: Worker Lookup: Error encountered while doing lookup. Any information on what's going on here would be greatly appreciated. We do have a firewall here in-house but I've given the FMSA9 Quick Start …

I set up daily backups in FileMaker Server Admin. They are all enabled. Path is validated. They are to go in folders like the default "backups" folder on the server, but each folder is named for the day it's backed up ("MonBU" "TueBU" etc.) "Allow Schedules To Run" is checked under Action. The schedules do not run, even if I click "Run Now" under Action. Why won't they backup schedules run? What's really weird is that some of them ran on Jun 20, but never again. Thanks.

I have 21 DB's running on an NT4 Workstation with FMPro Server 5.5. Client are able to interact with this DB's no problem. When I move the DB's over to an XP Workstation running the same Server Software, clients are unable to see 7 of the DB's. All I did was copy and past the DB's from computer to computer.. If anyone has any ideas, I would be happy to hear from you. Thanks.

I'm running Job Pro Central on Filemaker Server 9 (and clients are using Filemaker Pro 9). Job Pro Central runs perfectly for users within the LAN... however, it is UNGODLY slow loading remotely. My situation: Office in Chicago 10 users Office in Mexico 5-7 users I want the office in Mexico to efficiently and effectively access Job Pro Central... but... hosting it on Filemaker Server is just the wrong way of doing it. Here's the problem. Chicago office is all Mac. Mexico office is a mixed environment of Mac/PC Multiple users connect to the database simultaneously so PCAnyWhere and Timbuktu are out of the question. I don't have the r…

I have a scheduled backup that runs fine on Server 7 (OS is Tiger). I also have a scheduled task to run a script (I've tried both shell and Applescript) shortly thereafter that copies the backed up database files to a file server elsewhere on our campus. The scripts have the recommended executable bits set, owner and group are set to fmserver and fmsadmin. The scripts run just fine from the command line, and the transfer of data takes about 30 seconds. On the server, at the scheduled time, the server log indicates that the script was run and completed, but nothing happens. No data transfer, nothing. I've tried a very simple shell script that just cre…

Recently upgraded FMS to a new faster server. I run FMS9A with 11 databases hosted with two of them being around 19GB. The rest under 100MBs. On the server it's self I have both FM9 and FM8 clients running separate scripts all the time. The system seems to run fine, until the backup starts at 2am, then it slows to a point that 2-3 users can not work until it finishes. I turned verify off, which changed the back-up time from 2 hours plus to 27 minutes. Watching the activity monitor, the cpu load does not make much of a difference. But it seems that when the disk reads/writes are being done by FM, it causes a slow down. The Wait time/Calls goes way up. If I do a manual…

This is a similar problem to the one listed by Guy B, only in my case, FM is slow in several areas. It's slow to start up & open files, slow when displaying lists, slow to execute scripts... I'm guessing there's no easy answer to this question, since there are so many possibilities: we're running old software (client 6, server 5.5) on an old OS (Win 2K Server), and there are intricate scripts and 100+ fields in most of our DBs. Much of it wasn't created by me- I was lucky enough to inherit this mess when I got hired. Let me isolate one specific example and posit a direct question: We have a value list with abbreviated names of 70+ properties, and this usually t…

I have FileMaker Server 9 running on a Windows 2003 Server machine. The application is accessed completely through php/html pages using the FileMaker API for PHP. I recently began getting complaints that it was running so slowly, it was unusable. Looking into it, i've noticed that the process fmswpc.exe is using between 90 and 100% of my server's CPU. Has anyone else had this problem? Even if i have only one user sending requests, that process will still hit around 70%. What is this process? what causes it to eat so many resources? Is there anything I can do?

Hi, I am hoping someone can help me out. We are running FMSA 9 on a Windows 2003 platform. Our database includes a container field which we would like to hold images. We would like the images in the field to be file references only, to save space and performance. We wish to place the original images themselves, in a folder on the same server. How do we get the image to appear in the container field in the database? I think this has to do with the filepaths, but I am not sure. Any advice would be most appreciated. Thanks!!

Brought into a project here at work cleaning up some FileMaker databases. One issue right now is several of us run FileMaker Pro 9 from a system using Terminal Services (Win2003) Any time we open a database, a nice little window pops up stating: "FileMaker cannot share files because another user is already using FileMaker Pro on this computer" Is there any way to make that not pop up? It gets annoying clicking it how ever many times to open a database.

I have a bunch of FileMaker files, each with its own specific users and security settings (examples: a single file for Ordering, a single file for Tracking Property, a single file for Customers to view the property they have checked out to them). All of the files share the pertinent information so there isn't any redundancy. I want all of my different users to enter my FileMaker solution through a single FileMaker file that I've created just as a menu screen to all of the different files. From there, the users can select what they need to do (make an order, view property, etc), which will open a separate FileMaker file. The problem: when a user opens FileMaker Pr…

We are having some major issues with FMS 9.03. Last week it crashed on us. The files just closed. We went to a backup copy of the files just in case, and today it crashed again. We have server running on a dedicated box with more than sufficient hardware requirements. Quad Processor 72GB 3G PLUG SAS 15K RPM HD 4GB RAM etc... etc... The users have been complaining about the speed and coffee cups for the last two months. There is nothing unusual about the number of users or data traffic. So we tried to see if it was a network issue. Our Networks staff states that there is nothing strange. I am not sure if the two issues are related. I dont …

I have a solution that is various files (for Module sake) and I just upgraded it to Filemaker 9. The issue I am having is the Import script step. When I open the file remotely, it does not see the files it is to import from over the network, even those are files that are already open over the network. The script works flawlessly on the host computer, but not remotely.

ok, a friend has an old site, just called me as he setup filemaker, put a bunch of his clients in, products, etc. now wants it on the web. I have been a web/php developer for 6+ years now, and lost, well not really started yet. I installed the demo of fm9, even started looking at the tut video's, but before I even venture, can someone answer these basic q's. Normally (using mysql, mssql, oracle, postgres, etc) I would make my page, do my db connect, hand code the queries, put data in arrays(the normal stuff), is this possible in fm? I haven't found where I simply say, connect with this string, or do this, etc I see hours of tutorial video's, but I haven't …

Hello, I am tinkering with a trial of FMS Advanced on 10.5.4. I get through the deployment assistant, the IWP and PHP test pages run fine, everything looks good in the Admin Console. Now, when i launch PHP Site assistant, it cannot find the publishing engine. No matter how I list the server, via IP, DNS, etc it keeps saying "Publishing engine is not running on the specified server." Seems odd since 5 seconds before the PHP Test page worked fine. I've tried this on 10.5.3 and 10.5.4 on both client and Server versions of OSX. Any ideas? Thanks

Connecting from a third remote location the admin console start page loads and the java app installs but then stops and nothing further is loaded. 2. Computers on the local network get an error when connecting. After a certificate is requested get a dialog with "Unable to launch the application". Any thoughts or further info needed? the following is the error log Error: Unexpected exception: jave.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> …

I have a client who recently upgraded from a single-machine FMSA8 deployment to a dual-machine FMS9 deployment. We have spent nearly a month trying to get Custom Web Publishing up and running, but we keep receiving "Maximum number of web sessions exceeded (Error 956)" errors whenever we make a query. I have restarted both servers and redeployed the WPE numerous times, but this has not solved the issue. Many of the articles I have read on this subject state that this is a Firewall problem, but they never say what the problem is exactly. I have checked the ports on both machines as well as the firewall using the FileMaker Tech Info 6427 resource, but with no luck.…

I've finally gotten a license of FMS 9, which I've been waiting on before installing my copy of Mac OS Server 10.5 Leopard, because I heard Leopard Server couldn't be used with FMS 8. So, are these two (Leopard Server and FMS 9) ready to work together in peace and harmony? You always hear about the problems more than the successes on forums like this, but I'm hoping there are more people making it work at this point. One other thing--I happened to be in Extended Privileges today and I noticed that fmphp is listed as "FMS only" in the description, but that fmxml and fmxslt are listed as "FMSA only." That's just a piece of text they forgot to update when they swit…

Hi I have been using PHP for only a short while and have not touched xsl or xml. I need to automate server9 to send an email on a regular basis to the same address'. I have found and used the xsl style sheet that that graham sprague wrote (http://www.grahamsprague.com/server_side_email/server_side_email.zip ) and this works very well. But I cannot work out how to call this from within the server. I tired to create a script that called a page with a webviewer in it and giving it the url but this did not work unless I went to the database and went to that layout. I realise calling an xsl is probably straight but I cannot work it out and I have a limited time schedule at t…

My appolgies if this has been asked/posted before. I am looking at implementing a FM9 Server Advanced to serve about 25 lan users and IWP access, with probably 30-40 concurrent web users (casual lookups and nominal data entry.) About 20 databases with 600k records total, dos file sizes are about 8 gig total. I will be (or I will be contracting out) converting/migrating several legacy qbasic and clipper dos based programs (gee, every do that before?) into fm9 server advanced. Since the original programs are dos based they run like lightening on modern servers. Remote uses access via Terminal Servers connected through VPNS. The lan users are connecte…

Hi, I am new to Filemaker. I have just installed Server Advanced 9.1 R2 for Mac OS X and applied the 9.0.3.326 update. When I start launch the Admin Console I get the following: "The Database Server is not available. To edit server deployment, please start the Database Server first." When I press restart I get the following: Unable to start the database server. Please contact your system administrator for assistance." I am running fully updated Leopard on a Macbook. I have seen this error elsewhere on the forum but nothing seems to apply. Can anyone help? Many thanks, Keith Hulse

Since applying the original 9.0v3 update we have experienced what seems to be a memory leakage, such that we need to reboot the server every three weeks or so. I have come to the decision that we will need to reinstall the software, although some have suggested that we install the latest complete trial version and then enter our valid serial number. Beyond the need to get our IT people involved, my biggest concern is having the reconfigure the backup and other settings on the Server. Can anyone advise where this information is stored? If in one or two neat files, obviously I will copy those over to the new installation. Thanks in advance.

weak sauce people, weak sauce... I have 20-25 machines that due to the constraints of a legacy system must share their own databases at any given time. I have had no problem connecting between them up until now and hardware/software-wise there are three groups of identical systems. I have one and only one system that cannot see any other local hosts on the FM network, neither does it appear as a local host to other users. Filemaker sharing is enabled and the databases themselves are set to be visible. The firewall is set to allow FM sharing and in fact, I have simply turned off the firewall with the same result. All of these systems are able to acc…

Hi everyone, I am working on a file management system for FMP 9. I like to keep all Jpeg / PDF / Text files on a drive connected to my Filemaker server computer accessible to all users of my FMP database. I like my users to pick a file name from a list and view it within my database, maybe in a Web viewer ? Any recommendations how to accomplish this ? I have been keeping the files within FMP, but the DB is getting too big and bulky. Any experience with this ? Thank you in advance. Xoomaster

Hi all, looking at upgrading our system from 2-Macs (G5's) running OS 10.3.9 Server (with Web Publishing) and OS 10.3.9 running FileMaker Server 7 Advanced. I will be upgrading the Mac's to OS 10.5 first then I want to upgrade my Filemaker software to 9.X. I am currently using CWP with XSLT/XML. I searched the FileMaker site for a 9.0 Web Publishing Installation Guide to see what was involved but did not find one. It looks like they are moving to support PHP in this version. Anyone out there that has experienced this migration route and might offer some thoughts on avoiding unnecessary "pain" here would be much appreciated. Thanks..........Ray

Since updating FileMaker Server Advanced 9.0v2 to v3 via the standard updater, I have had a couple of instances where: users get messages asking them to log into databases (when we use external authentication and no passwords are required), the same users appear more than once in the Server Console or users remain listed in the console after they have exited all databases, users' screens freezing and them being booted out of the system, and a general loss of control of the server via the Java Console. The only solution has been to stop and restart the service on the host machine. I am keen to find a solution as quickly as possible as we have a number of important bus…

When FileMaker Server starts up (when the computer boots), I get an error message sent to me by email from FileMaker Server: Error 92 [servername] Could not complete operation on database "Databases" because it is not currently open. I do not have a database called Databases, and all of my hosted databases are in a folder called "hosted", in a custom location. I think the server might be somehow mistaking the default "Databases" folder, which I don't use, for a database? But if that is the problem, I don't know what to do to fix it. Everything otherwise works fine, all my databases open up and people can access them as expected. Could someone tell me w…
