I am the client of our company database which is hosted in our eMac (small business). This week I changed my hardware (from PowerBook G3 Lombard to PowerBook G4 15") and all O. Systems to Panther 10.3.3. Excellent in all sense. However a problem raised. The database is appearing in my computer not as a full screen one, as used to. I have a database that opens a window for editing a record. I have an OK button that commits the changes, and a Cancel button that reverts the data. I would like to be able to turn off the committing when a user clicks outside the field. If I turn off auto-committing, it asks the user to commit the changes. I don't want it to even do that. Hey guys! I have a(nother) question which I am hoping someone can help me out with. Is it possible to, on the first time the database is opened, show one Layout (as in a "help screen") but on every other time it is opened (2 - forever) it shows a differently Layout? I am having a problem deleting a record. It was obviously corrupted somehow, as strange things were happening. I exported the record and then imported it back in and all seems well with it. I then tried to delete the corrupted record. It won't permanently delete. It disappears from the found set, but doesn't disappear from the Record Count. If I do a search on field for a value that I know that record had in the field, that record comes up. However, all the fields are completely blank even though it comes up in a found set. A user I support is unable to print one specific file (on a local, USB Brother 1440 or a networked HP 4300). The printers are working fine. Other FM files print fine. I've moved the file a MAC (OS X) and it prints (different printer). I moved the file to another XP machine and tried the same to printers and also was unable to print. I want to display one adress at a time of a customer record I've created a relationship that links a "location" field located in the customer table to a "location" field inside the "address" table. A script dynamically changes the address displayed by simply changing the content of a "location" field inside the customer table... I realise that topic of font appearance has been mentioned several times already in 7 But it really is aweful and renders applications un-presentable. Does anyone know anything that can be done to improve them. Also is is even slightly possible that Filemaker will issue a very quick update that will turn their anti-aliasing feature off and revert to the OS. There was nothing wrong with the fonts in ver.6. FM7 seems to have bugs in layout mode - or just be extremely slow. When I try to drag anything in Layout mode, it takes about 4 seconds before I get any reaction from FileMaker. Then, once I've positioned the element, it takes another full second for FileMaker to recognize that I've released the mouse. In short, it feels like I'm wading through molasses. This happens both on my home computer (XP Pro, 1600x1200 resolution) and my work computer (W2K Pro, 2560x1024 resolution). I've tried re-installing FM7 but still have the same problem. I am trying to finish up my first project for a deadline and am stuck on one part... I hope this is possible. I need to display a "product rating" for each record. I want the output for the data to be a graphic ( 1 - 5 stars for example). How can I have the user do this? My idea was to present a set of Radio Buttons which they could choose one of the five options. Now how would I get their rating to display as a certain graphic in a Layout / Template? I am trying to establish a relationship between two files. In the first file, I have names and addresses of physicians offices. In the second file I set up a relationship to the first file using the physician name field. My goal was to have a pop-up list of all the physicians for selection. When I get to this physician name field, I do see the pop-up list, but when I select a physician name, I see an error message "The field cannot be modified until "physician name" is given a valid value. I am new to filemaker. Having previously used access and vb to do my work. I decided to use filemaker for a small database at work and found it quite useful for "quick & dirty design" however I have found the scripting side of it or more to the point reference and user guides a little on the lame side. Can anyone suggest a good reference or web site to get a much more "advanced" look at the scripting possibilities within filemaker. by the way I am using filemaker 6.0 under windows XP. As i said other than this frustration I guess you can say that I am converted to filemaker.

Does FM7 (or earlier) offer any functionality for managing two displays in OS X? Or should I just plan to carefully position two windows, one on each display? I hope I'm on the right form, if not sorry. I'm building an application which has two main tasks. 1. Controlling data about our clients (name, adress etc.), 2. Send letters (by template) to clients. (this template will either be in Filemaker or MS Word (not definitive yet). In FMU 6 for OS X 10.3, I have WebCompanion configured to publish Access, Error and Info logs, but they are not in the FileMaker Pro 6 folder and I can't find them elsewhere on my hard drive. Are they somewhere else, or is there perhaps a permissions issue preventing them from being written? I am running FMU as a non-admin user.

Hi, Any chance that FM7 will allow fields/items to be blocked/invisible under defined conditions? This feature would be enough for me to switch to 7.0. I don't understand that this was not available even in 1.0 to begin with... The 7.0 Trial I have running locally takes about 5x the time to do something as my 5.5/6.0 over a server. Is this a restriction built into the Trial version or something? Jim (very eager to try out the new features which might make my life a bit easier).

I have used FileMakerPro in the past for cataloging collections of videos both professionally and personally, but am now trying to take it in a completely different direction. I asked this question a while ago but it never got answered, and I haven't been able to find documentation for this feature. It appears that FM7 (not server) can save a copy of a file while other P2P FM7 clients are connected. FM6 could not do this. I've been trying to move my FileMaker Pro Unlimited hosted web site from 5.0v3 on OS 9 to 6.0v4 on OS X. The problem I'm having is that after hosting the site with FMU 6, the validations I have been using under FMU 5 don't work any more. I have a form that is filled out online that goes to an error page if filled out improperly that works perfectly under 5, but fails every time under 6. I am using validations in the field definition, and Range, Not Empty, Data Type all work fine, but if I try to validate using a value list or a calculation it ignores the validation. If anyone is interested, I have attached a file demonstrating one way to do horizontal portals in FM7. By defining multiple portals horizontally next to each other, each one with only one row and setting the initial row larger each time, a horizontal portal is created. By creating a key that can be scripted, scrolling can occur. One must be careful with the sorting though so pay attention to my sort records in the relationship definitions. I am very new to using Unlimited. We have a solution with 50+ files that has been in use for years. Some of our clients what to start using filemaker over a wireless connection via the internet. We already have a way to connect to the web server wirelessly. Am I correct in setting up this configuration: Server 1 - Database server with FileMaker Server software (just as it has been. In the past I've usually connected all of my solutions' files to a "variables" file where every file relates back to the variables file. The variables file contains a single record and a bunch of globals (the variables). Not uncommon. Here's my question regarding FM 7: is it possible to do this without relationships in multi-table files? It seems that it is. In other words, can I create a Variables table, not relate it to anything, and still access its global fields from different parts of a multi-table solution? There are many different design approaches since many times form follows functions but also there is a good argument that forum should precede function and putting on a different mental cap when developing sometimes when you come to a cross road as to where to put the priority. Hello everyone, After spending a few years now in developement of Filemaker, I decided that I would try to sell a point of sale system with inventory and purchase order systems locally to a audio dealer. I don't really want to build the database from scratch, and it used to be that filemaker came with a few nice templates. Now with 6, there is no luck. Now that I've had a few days to explore 7 Developer, I'm starting to think about how to migrate my current project. The project was started in 6 and hasn't been deployed in any form yet. It's about 25% finished, at best. So, the way I see it, no time like the present to move to 7. Now that FM files can contain multiple tables, what's the incentive to relate individual files vs. using a single file with multiple tables? Although I'm sitting at a stand-alone XP (with cable modem) after converting a mult-file solution, I received the "exceeded license" error message and FM7 quits! when I try to open one of the files. The other 5 files open just fine. I still have Dev5 installed--could that be it? I've tried converting the single file, and still get the message. So, right now I've gotten 95% of the solution converted! (BTW it looks awful, but you knew that). Any ideas as to why I'm exceeding the license? I'm totally legit in the install, of course. Hi all, This may not be specifically a FileMaker 7 question, but it has presented itself to me because of a new 7 feature. Something I'm working on would be great to have a new popup window open to allow a user to do a find - however, I'd like to not have the toolbar visible. All the find - and after find functions - like new request, omit, sort, etc. will be triggered by buttons. This works well, except that with the toolbar hidden, the user can't see which records they tagged as omit in their find. I have some questions that relate to screen ergonomics. 1) Is there a way to increase the font size at the DEFINE DATABASE dialog box. I have a 20 inch Apple flat screen monitor and the resolution is pretty good but I still struggle when changing calculation formulas, etc. Is there a way to make this a little easier to see? 2) Is there a way to increase the space available for layout names at the left menu bar? Hi we currently have a FM5.5/6 network solution with a copy running on a server as a host. I also access it remotely via ADSL. We need to upgrade with extra licences (I guess that means to v7). I am confused as to the benefits of using FM server as distinct from the solution we have now. Of course Server v7 isnt even available yet. I am having problems with two related file that I have associated to my main database, both files have lost data at some time or another, both still keep the relationship to the parent record, but most but not all of the data in the related record is gone, this has happened in two different file, both to the same relationship, and One has happened twice, I spent hours retyping the missing data, then one week later it happened again. We have currently developed a POS solution for restaurants, and would like to add the ability to identify a waiter using some kind of hardware gizmo (smartcard, badge etc...). As I've been looking over FM7 to see if it's suitable to my needs, I've read a number of comments in the forums here re. the ability to use files that contain only layouts and scripts to serve as an interface to separate data files. That would surely simply my projects, but since I'm still looking over the trial version, I haven't been able to figure out how to do that. hi, Filemaker Pro 6 has no vertical scrolling using a trackball or mouse (Kensington and Microsoft products) with the mac under system OSX in Jaguar and Panther? I bought FM6 but am forced to still use FM Pro 4 under system 9 because under sys 9 and earlier, vertical scrolling has ALWAYS worked on all of my mice and trackballs with scolling buttons. I know the fuzy fonts are a result of the new vector graphics engine in FM7. I may be able to live with it a little easier if I understood what that new engine was doing for me. What I want to hear is now I don't have to try to make graphics exclusively with FMP or Claris Works in order to have the most "optimized" graphic to push across networks. Maybe it's just something I'm not seeing .. but is there no way to specify a dynamic path to a file for the insert file script step? Maybe most people know at the time they're writing scripts what file(s) they're going to want to insert later and where they can be found, but my case this step is almost useless without that functionality -- unless the user points to a file. Sometimes when selecting Grouped objects the handle bars of all individual items are selected and it seems that the item is ungrouped - when in fact it is grouped. Other times when moving objects around on the screen with the arrows - duplicating and dragging. the handle bars are disembodied from the object. If I select an object say a button the handle bars are highlighted elsewhere. or another object is selected instead. - (It's like an out of button experience). Hi, Sorry if this has been asked, but its tough keeping up with tht flood of info these days. I'm still using 6, and have looked here and on the FM site but don't have an answer yet. In FM 7 is it possible for an end user to perform a find and/or sort and then save that find/sort to be called up and applied again at a later date? (That is, without having access to the scripts.) It's always seemed to me that this shouldn't be that tough, given the existance of the 'modify last find' command. If FM can remember the parameters of the last find, then it seems it should be able to wirte these parameters to a little file (that isn't a script) for later recall …

Anyone know how to propagate new accounts and password changes with a multi-file solution in FM 7? Is it just a matter of scripting the account & password to every file at the time of the change? Or is this a case where an external authentication server would be best? What I'm looking for is a way for an account to be created automatically when HR adds a new employee, and the password to update in all files when a user changes his/her password. I have tried on two different simple test databases to create a portal. One main table with a sub table connected via relationship by ID fields. Relationship and portal creation was easy, but I cannot enter any records in the portal. When you click on the portal it flashes but you cannot enter into the field to create a record. You can go to the Sub table and enter a record with a matching ID value to the Main table, fine, but when you go the Main table and view the form with the portal there is no data visable in the portal. We currently have a FMP solution where a single table is accessed by three different FMP "applications". One application allows User A to add new records. Another application allows User B to modify and close the records. The third application allows User C to search the data. User A <> User B <> User C If we migrate to FMP7, will we be forced to combine all these applications that are using the same related table, into a single FMP7 file? if we create all in one solutions with a many table, I am certain that ScriptMaker will become somewhat of a pig. FM will have to consider script set (like the way you can create sets for layers in photoshop). Or something. Also, I think it is time to have it so we can text edit scripts. How many times I would have loved copy paste script then find replace variable.

I anyone else have trouble with portals in preview mode? I have a layout that worked fine in v5.5 that is choking in v7. It consists of some fields at the top of the layout, a large comments field, and a portal at the bottom. Everything slides up, depending on field contents. The problem is that the portal does not always appear for the second or third records on a page. The first record on each page always displays correctly. It's not just a conversion problem. The same thing happened when I tried to create a similar database from scratch in v7. FYI, I'm using the trial version. We'll see if it persists when I install the full version in a day or two. …

I'm trying to set up a relationship with an invoice table where I want all invoice line items on invoices after a certain date. There are three tables in question Invoices, InvoiceLineItems, and Inventory. Invoices has a Date field, InvoiceLineItems has a ProductCode, and Inventory has ProductCode and a global Date field. In FM6 I used to store jpeg references as global field repetitions. I employed a series of scripts to get the image from particular repetitions and make it show up in a container field. If you wanted cabinet number 6 to show up over here, you clicked on an image of 6 and bingo......image 6 would show up! FM 7 does not appear to have Global Fields like this. Okay, maybe I'm just a dope but I can't figure out how to script a simple find. Here's what I do in v6: The user presses a button which puts him in the find mode. He then enters an example of what he is searching for in one or more of the fields. He pushes return or enter to execute the search. I can't get this to work in 7.0. One difference is that I have the field behavior set to go to the next field on tab, return, and enter. This is a very cool feature that should keep the folks from entering unwanted carriage returns at the end of fields. Most interesting. I got an enquiry from a client in Japan (who are really happy about 7), about resetting a font to the layout default, after an import. I discovered that our old work-around, setting the field to itself did nothing. So I tried the new Text Formatting function, TextFont(). It worked. Then I tried my old "MergeStyles" file, which had a letter text field, with custom merge fields Substituted by calculation. In pre-FM7, I was preserving styles through a calculation with an AppleScript routine. Amazingly it now works fine as is, styles are preserved by the calculation engine. Looks like FM7 has some of the features I've been looking for, like ability to export to Excel and integrate with PDAs (that is, if I am correctly reading the specs for Mobile 7, it will work with runtime apps??) However, I have some concerns. The font issue may be a problem for me. I already had to change some fonts to get everything looking "clean" cross-platform. In fm 6.0 I used a lot of globals to put data from a customer to an invoice (both related with a constant). So in fm6.0 I started in the customerfile, used a script to put the custid in the global custid in the invoicefile and after creating a new record I put the global in the custid of the new invoice. I don't know if I used it well, but now I did the following: start in the customerfile, perform the script with custid as a scriptparameter, create a new invoice and put the scriptparameter into the custid in the invoice. I just downloaded the demo and opened the primary file of a multi-file web-shared solution built in FM6. I use the Web Companion to share the file(s) and all works well. But when I opened the primary file in 7 and had the file recreated as an FM7 file, and tried to share it, I can't. I first went to Sharing-->Instant Web Publishing and tried to simply turn it on. I am asked for my Admin Password, which I insert, and then get a long Spinning Disc. Enclosed is a simple db with people & their favorite foods. I want Commit to work a way I think it can't... The layout has "Save record changes automatically" checked so I don't use FM7's confirmation dialog box. There are two buttons on the layout: Cancel and Save. As you can see mac actually uses multiple windows... Unfortunatly When you do this on a PC It doesnt look like this at all... Is there a way to do this that I dont know of.. Just playing with a trial version of FileMaker Pro 7 and i got a question. For a solution i made for myself (in-house so to speak i have three tables like this with the relevant fields; Results (ID, Category) Results_Placings (Results_ID, Place, Points) Results_PointScales (Category, Place, Points) In earlier version i needed some multi-field keys to lookup a value in Results_Placings::Points based on the Results::Category and Results_PointScales::Place values. There are some of us that run FileMaker Unlimited, but not server. I for one use unlimited to serve up my web solutions, and dont really need the server version. This is NOT an available option with the new version. If you want the capabilities of unlimited for web access, you have to purchase their FileMaker 7 Server Advanced. The cost, almost $2,500.
