    I am trying to put togather a simple Invoiceing system which i have managed to do up to a point. I have an Invoice header table that contains the invoice numbers, date and client details, i then have an invoice line table that stores the indivudual lines of the invoice. I now want to print the invoice, meaning that i want a report that will print the header and then each line that is linked to that header but i can not figuer out how to do it. can any one help me ?

In a data entry form is there an easy way to create drop-down options that may, or may not, offer secondary options and even offer third options.     I want to create the tools for the user to construct his own mail templates. So here is the deal: I would have a layout with a large main text field on the right side of the page, and on the left side I want to have common pieces of text and relevant fields (tags) that the user can insert into the main text with the click of a button next to the tag. The button(s) will trigger a scripts that will insert the text (or field) where the cursor is in the main text.     Hi guys, (I'm using Developer 7) I've done a search already, and although I found solutions to change the color of a field through calculation or script, what would you do if you had, say, 100 fields that needed this done ? That's a lot of calculation fields, or a high maintenance (and not to mention large/slow script). I was thinking of doing something with a portal, displaying a background based on the field value, but I can't figure out how I'd do that with multiple fields...     Although a relative neophyte to FileMaker (haven't used the application for years), in other databases (based on FileMaker such as in AppleWorks and old Apple versions of FM), I was easily able to insert a "check box" in my layout (one of the fields). The blank check box could easily be checked to indicate that a certain action or condition had been met or left blank to indicate "no", etc. However, I cannot determine how to do this in FileMaker Pro 8.     One of my layouts must have gotten corrupted somehow; all of the fields and images/text I had on it no longer show up. In fact, nothing shows up on this layout, and the layout name is blank on the left hand side of the FMPro window. I've created a new layout from scratch without any difficulty, but can't do anything with this old layout. Clicking "Layout Setup" does nothing, and I can't add any parts, fields, etc., and hitting Ctrl-E does nothing. Does anyone have any idea how to delete this layout?

    Help! I've spent the better part of the day trying to solve this problem: I'm trying to print merged labels in FMP6. I selected the type of labels I wanted to use. I told it to print the labels in 3 columns across. When I preview or try to print, I only get the first label on each page. It isn't printing one label per page, but ONLY the first label of each page, skipping the 29 labels in between, although they are there in the database. I'm sure it is a setting problem that I've made, but I can't find it. Would appreciate any suggestions.

    I cannot delete any records in one of my files. I have two files set to relate via an ID field. The relationship allows deletion of either record if the other is deleted, yet they won't delete. Via script or menu bar, I get the message if I still want to delete and of course I choose to delete. Yet nothing deletes. Account prefs are for administrator so allows deletion. What am I missing?   18. I've converted several files from fm5 to fm7. I'm now putting all the files into one file and relating the tables. No problem. The problem is some of those files have a very large number of layouts that are mostly custom reports and other things that the client prints out all the time. How in the world am I going to escape the slow tedium of recreating each layout in the new solution file??

    Is there a way to only enable certain fields to be entered under certain conditions? For instance, if I have a field specified as a pull-down list with options 1, 2, and 3. And I only want certain other fields to be able to be edited when option 1 is chosen. Then other fields can only be edited when option 2 is chosen. Etc. Thanks.

    I have a layout that is supposed to group sales for the day by agent and prvide the total sales each agent did for that day. When I run the layout I do not get the agent name to print out and the total is the grand total not the sub total for the agent.     This is really dumb, but I can't find a simple solution... I have a client that receives orders on the internet. She cuts names, addresses, etc, and pastes them into the appropriate FM field. Frequently the data is in a larger size font, or an odd color. She wants the data to convert to the font, size and color of the appropriate field. Is there a way to do this other than a complicated script that will reformat the text in each field?

    one field contains lengthy text and is formatted to scroll. a second field is a repeating field that contains keywords that I input based on information from the first field and is the related field for a portal from another database. is there a formatting step that would allow me to freeze the first field as I edit the second field so that the first field does not return to the beginning of the text? If not, are there suggestions for other ways to solve this ... I am considering creating a new window containing only the second field, but don't know if that's the best solution. Thanks.

    What if I want to exclude multiple records from a report? I know I have to attach it to a button. I want to exclude records that have the project status as finished. However, I have a container field that corresponds with the project status field. For example, when the field says "finished" the container field becomes gray.   26. I know that you can restrict modification of a field value based upon the user's privileges. However, can you prevent the user from even clicking into a field that they don't have access to modify? So, if the user only has 'view' access to a field, I don't want them to even be able to to enter into the field. They way I think FileMaker works is that FileMaker will allow access into the field, yet if they try to modify it, they will receive an error. I don't want them to even be able to click into the field if they don't have access rights. Other users will have higher levels of access and should be able to click into the field and modify it.

    Sorry if this has been asked before, we are having a problem with FM8 that we did not used to have with FM6 We have a number of scripts that we use to insert common paragraphs into quotations that we send to our clients. The field for the quote is almost A4 in size. Normally the user will type in specific unique info for the first part of the quote and then choose a script to add the common paragraphs like delivery times, terms etc. In FM6 we could run the script and the text would word wrap if it was longer than 1 line. In FM8 we are finding that instead of word wrapping, the word at the end of a line will split, resulting in the first part of the word on 1 line…

    Hi ! I have a problems with fields that don't disappear like similar other fields when they should. Please see attachement... There is 15 portals which each shows information of their relasionships. In blue boxes there is "callsigns" (A1, A2, etc). When there is something to show the callsigns appear in portals. The order of callsigns can be changed. If I remove whole callsign, in some portals all information disappears as it should. But there are some portals where empty blue box still remains.   40. Okay, I'm still fairly new to Filemaker, and I can't seem to get around this annoying behavior in my layouts. Whenever a user clicks into any field to enter data, every single field on the layout becomes "highlighted." I put the term in quotes because it's not *exactly* highlighted, but the little dotted lines appear around all the fields. This doesn't interfere with the functionality of the db, but it annoys the heck out of me. Anybody know how to prevent this?

    I've produced a report, and am having trouble displaying the jobname field, as some of the records contain a "?" instead of the value. Now I know that the field is smaller than the actual title, hence filemaker substitues ? with the title, but is there a way where I can force FileMaker to display as many words that will fit in that space as possible - without the need for creating another field with a calculation.     Hello, I have been using FM8 on my home computer and office computer, the program acts differently on each one. Office: when moving items around in layout, there are some serious pauses as I move. It is very slow. Is this to to do with a graphic card, or is there a setting that I can modify? Home: when opening FM, it loads slowly, taking about 40 secs to open a file. At my office, it is almost instant. My computer at home is older, so I would assume a memory issue? Thank you, Michael

    I am currently working on a work order database for my employer. I have a key in the employee information table called the pawprint which is a unique user name for each employee. This information table also includes their location, phone number, etc. My problem is that I want to be able to enter this pawprint in a blank in my main Work Order table, and have the name of the person, which is uneditable in the blank below it.     I have a report that lists payemnts received ona specific day. I woudl like to SUM up the payments amounts for the day and get a count on the number of entries. I ahve tired to doa Column List/Report format, group by Payment Date and tell it I was sub totals and grand totals. Presently, there is an blank space occurring where no data occurs in a merge field. I want text to automatically shift left (and/or up) when data does not occur in the preceeding field.   56. I have a Filemaker solution that was created in FM6. When we used the FM6 version, we could print on W2 Forms. Now that we have converted it to FM7, it doesn't work. I'm using a 8.5 by 11.0 sheet of paper that is perforated in the center with all the W2 boxes preprinted. I can get the first W2 to print right, but the second one is off by .25 inches and no matter what I adjust (Page Margins, Body Size) the darn thing won't work. Can anyone help me?

    I have a layout with (Records showing from ProductDetails) I also have the InventoryTransaction Table in a portal on the same layout. I use the portal to enter inventory into the InventoryTable. This works just fine. But when I want to do an Inventory(List) (Records showing from InventoryTransactions) The transactions show up but have no Idea what Product they belong too.     I have a weird situation -- some of my fields display text as Titlecase, even though the field is formatted as plain text. The field is a plain text field, without any auto-enter calcs. Try as I might, I cannot enter a capital letter in the middle of a word, which is frustrating for some names. (Also, if I try to redefine the font as "lowercase," it still displays as Titlecase.) Other fields on the same layout do not have the same problem. What could be going on?     I have a simple database with two tables: People and Donations. The People table contains contact information on donors. The Donation table contains records of each donation. The two tables are linked via a Person ID number. The list of donations from the Donation table appears in each record in a layout in the People table via a portal. All of this works fine.     Has anyone experienced problems with the "Change to hand cursor" suddenly not working on Mac OS Tiger? Specifically, a file I'd been working on suddenly lost its ability to change the mouse arrow to a hand when it was over a button. The checkbox for this feature is still checked in the Button Setup dialog for every button of every layout in the file but none work. I quit FM 8 Advanced and opened the file with FM 7 Developer and got the same results. Other FM files still work fine. In the projects layout, there is a portal logging the notes from our client, "cool beans." My idea is to provide a layout screen where say there is a custom panel for the creation of the allowed fields (the status area will always be hidden). The user can move and resize these fields to all them to create a truly custom layout.

    Here's my problem (fm6). I have 2 files, parents and students. Students have elementary and high school students. I need a list of all parents with their elemntary children sorted by number of elementary children they have. The key from parents to students and back is parent id. I created a calc field in students that comes up with a 1 if elementary child(call field EL). In parents I have a field that is the sum of that field in students (call it SUM_EL). Then in parents I have each record with family name and a portal of child with grade. I can sort it by SUM_EL but the problem is I can't just choose elementary children from students. It does all. Im currently working on the user interface, and due to the nature of it being hosted online, thought it would be appropriate to create buttons/tabs using the FileMaker tools, as the buttons redraw faster than if they were graphics(and I've got quite a few layouts Im going to be working on).     I have a purchasing form I need to create. Depending on the item selected they want different options to appear on the screen. I can't see any way of doing this in filemaker from what I have seen so far. The only other option is either hidding the fields that don't apply, or making them unclickable and still appear on the screen. So is it possible to hide a field based on the item selected in filemaker? Or is it possible to disable fields based on a selection in filemaker? Thanks.

    I am a beginner using Filemaker 7. I have a database with several text fields and one value list per record. I am wondering if there is a way to change the color of all the field text depending on what item is chosen from the value list? For example, I want item 1 in the value list to be red (is there even a way to make items in a value list different colors?) and when I select it all the text for that particular record changes to red. Then I want all the other items to be different colors and change their text accordingly. Or is there an easier way to do this differently? Thanks.

    In our database, each record requires varying amounts of image containers. The images need to be large to show the detail required. Since we need to print reports (and save PDF's) of these records- and the reports can be many pages- what is the best way to be able to only have the number of large image containers necessary for each record.     I've been developing on a Mac, where I've been pleased with the look of the layouts and the handling of the windows. Now, when I've put the system on a client's PC, many things are different -- color, hairline lines, font smoothing, etc. -- it doesn't look nearly as good! Worst of all, I have not figured out how to control the FMP Pro Window frame on a PC. I basically want to Resize to fit, and then adjust the FMP Window to fit that, and then adjust to maximize, so that you don't see a double frame (with two scroll bars -- very confusing!). Is there an easy way to control this?

    I can;t believe in all of the years I have been using FMP that I have never had this need, but I fianlly do and now, I don;t know if it can be done, or how to do it. Can I display on one report, the result of multiple searches? What I need to be able to do is show how many times an employeed did "X" activity over a period of time. Then I would like to display results in a format that shows yearly totals, monthly totals, and weekly totals. Each project is evaluated according to 5 criteria (relevance, efficiency, effectiveness, impact, and sustainability).     Hello all. I'm trying to create a table view of a flat Filemaker DB that includes all 89 fields in my DB. I go through the "Create New Layout" steps and select "Move all fields" but when I view the table, it cuts off the last few fields (stops at about 80). According to Filemaker, the column limit for a table view is 4000+. There is no logical reason for the fields to be left out. They're all simple text fields. There are a few that have repeating values, but they show up fine. I'm using FMPro 8 and tried fixing this in 7 on both Mac and PC, but nothing seems to work. The view keeps dropping fields.     For my data entry fields I would like all the fields to be boxed in with borders all the time. In browse mode if I have not mouse clicked or tabbed into any of the fields to enter data the appearance of the layout is the way I would like. However, once the mouse is placed into the field to select a radio button or enter text, all the other fields on the page seem to "fade". I.E. all the borders become dashed lines instead of the hard boxed-in lines previously there. I pulled up the filemaker example solutions that come standard and those had this same effect as well, but when I looked at some other example files I had lying around this effect wasn't there.   89. I have a text field that is used across multiple layouts which needs to have lines parallel to the text. The records have varying page numbers so a line of exact length will not do. The text field can't be expanded with the use of margins due to it affecting other layouts (an idea from another thread). Someome mentioned merging the line with the field for sliding, but I read that this can't be done. Any ideas how I could have my parallel lines ?

    Is there a way to keep text from printing on a conditional basis? I'm refering to text objects, not text within a field. For example, if Field1 is empty I'd like to not print the field lable "field1:". Basically, this would be the automated equivalent of selecting "Do not print the selected objects" in the Sliding/Printing dialog box.

    Attached is a file of what I need my end product to look like. (I have removed or renamed some client specific information.) I have 2 tables in the same file from which I need to create a report that resembles the one attached. I need to be able to use the button "Add New Order Part" to be able to clear the fields for the previous order part (While maintaining the information in the database) and add a new Order Part to the original order.     As one who works more in dynamic web design, I often return to Filemaker expecting to find in the Filemaker interface some of the dynamic layout features of, say, PHP include (or even a frameset). What I miss is being able to make, say, a menu bar of buttons with their links and have them appear in a number of other layouts. When I change one page, all pages should reflet that change automatically. I have experimented with convoluted merge values for buttons and their labels - but found them all wanting.     Hi, In single space view the data is fine- in double space data gets cut off- there is a note that says page 1 ends at line 44 and page 2 at 88- but I don't see how to adjust page breaks in layout view or know what to do to make it so all the data can be scrolled to in browse mode.     I have a database of various types of media (VHS, CD, DVD, MiniDV etc..) I am creating a script that will print out custom labels based on what type of media is selected. The script is something like: IF AssetType = MiniDV Go to layout MINIDV_Label Enter Preview mode Print Else if AssetType = VHS Go to layout VHS etc... The problem is, when I switch layouts the correct record is showing, but when I enter preview mode, it jumps to the first record in the table. Any ideas on how I can keep the record I am working with the record that prints out??
