Hi, I'm working on converting an FM database (v9.5) from English to German. The person who is doing the translation asked me if there are any problems with German umlauts like “ä,ö,ü” and special characters like "ß". I tested them and they seem to work OK and they show up in search, but I thought I would ask here to make sure. Translating the data to German is going to take a lot work and I want to make sure these characters aren't going to cause any problems. Has anyone had any experience working with special characters like this and is there anything that I should know about using them. Thanks.

i have a database with a repeating field. i made a report that has this repeating field included. the problem is i want to sort this report by the individual data inside these fields and it will only sort by the first piece of data in the repeating field. is there any sort of trick or script i can do to get filemaker to read these fields separately for sorting purposes OR is there a way i can get excel to read all of the data in the repeating field as opposed to just the top piece of info? let me know if any more information is needed from me. thanks!

Any Ideas? When I try to drag and drop a .tif file into a container field while I have Outlook with Mapilabs Attachment Processor software installed, everything freezes. Without Mapilab installed, no problem. It only seems to happen with .tif's and not pdf or other types.

Hello, If i have several images for a client, ie scanned drivers license and other jpgs.. I am looking for a way to send email and attach a container picture. Looks like Outlook can only take 1 attachment too... I expect lots of images.. Maybe i show store them in a folder and refence the container. Is ther a resoal price plug to export? I just imported one vendor's product list, and there are about 5,000 items in the inventory. They also sent about 3,700 photos for our website. Not every product has an associated photo. The ones that do have photos with filenames that equal the product number (for example, product A110B has a photo named "A110B.JPG"), but product B220Z does not have a photo, so there is no file named "B220Z.JPG". I have a file that I download every morning, that is only "reset" or "cleaned out" every couple weeks. Which means every morning I get the new records in addition to what I downloaded have already downloaded yesterday. Right now I open yesterdays file and find the last record that I imported yesterday. Then I open my new file and delete yesterdays records out of the file before bringing it into filemaker. Because after I import this data some of it changes I dont want to import and have it update the records putting the records back to what they were when they sent in the original request on the web. Multiple import warnings I have created an automated update routine (one script), which imports records from 23 tables in a single .fp7 file. It used to be that I only had to enter the password for the file (from which the records are imported) ONCE, upon the first import. All the subsequent imports then run without any further passwords prompts... this no longer is the case. It now produces a dialogue for each import step, and I'm not sure what I changed that causes this. Any ideas? Thank you so much!

I have documents in Word that I would like to merge with data from Filemaker Pro 8.5. Is there an easy way to do that?

I have a robot computer that does some importing/exporting chores between servers. Every so often I get a dialog box warning me of errors importing. I though I had pretty strenuously set the error capture to on before and off after the import routines. My routines are error forgiving and will retry. As long as there is no dialog box waiting for an OK. Is there still a plug in or some other solution for un-attended dialog box dismissals? I am running FMPro 10 on a Mac Mini with OS X 10.5.7 My Robot is a file that is hosted on FMP Server 10.

I have a spreadsheet that i would like to import into my database that contains about 400 records. One of the fields i am importing is the customer's name. My dilema is that in the spreadsheet, the first and last names are in the same field whereas in my database there is a separate field for first name and last name. My database already has several records in it so merging the two fields is not an option. Is there anyway they can be separated on import? Thanks

I have read that Filemaker pro 10 Advanced has the ability to import over multiple tables. So far I have only seen posts about other Fmp files... is it possible to do this with an excel spreadsheet? I have a few users I would like to simplify this process with a scripted button. But the issue always was that the records they wanted to import were in a different table.. but the identifier for importing "matching" records was in the main table. So in the past I have always had to take control and import the records for them with the necessary keys etc... not easy for an average end-user. Any Suggestions?

Hi there I was hoping someone could give me some advice. Whenever I select the export records option in filemaker, it allows me to start to save the file as tab separated text, however the next message that appears after the save as box is as follows:- "'export.tab' could not be created on this disk. Use a different name, make more room on the disk, unlock it or use a different disk". I have tried a few times to save the export under a different file name but I've had no success. It can't be a memory problem, as whenever I go into another filemaker database, I can perform exports no problem, so it just seems to be a problem with this particular file. …

What is the best way to import a found set of records and all of their related records from File A (the solution file) to File B (the archive file)? I have imported whole tables of data before from one file to another, but I have never imported an individual record or a found set of records from a table along with all of their related records from other tables. There’s probably a fairly simple way to do this and perhaps my brain is on vacation, but I’m really confused about this today and need some help. TIA WinXP, FMP9 Adv

Hi everyone. Have an import records script that I have edited, but the new fields data are not showing up and I cannot figure out why. This import is importing from a clone database. The data is in the clone (I have verified that) and it is on the layout in the script. But the data in the new fields I added never gets from the clone to the main database. I was wondering does the order of the fields in the script mean anything? I have attached screenshots. Thanks for your help!

Does anyone know of a round about way to export the contents of a container field to a set location? Only piece I have been able to piece together so far is I can insert the contents of the container field onto the clipboard, but after that, FM is useless to paste it to anything other than another field. I would like to be able to implement a script in my database that would export the attachments and then email them to a recipient. I have an excel macro that does what I need - control FM, control IE, but I would like to eliminate the use of send keys from Excel to FM. Any ideas? I use it to keep a database of players in an adult sports league. Up until now, there have been two sports, about 4 seasons each per year. I created a form for work in Filemaker, but now the people at work want it in Word so that they can edit later; I want to export the data but keep the formatting that it has. Filemaker does this when I save as a pdf; is there a way to convert the fp7 or pdf file into word and keep the formatting?

Here is the scenario: I am a film buyer (book movies for theatres). We keep track of all our theatres' daily grosses in our FileMaker Pro 8.5 data base. Recently, my husband wrote us a Perl Script that takes all the information from Rentrak (a box office reporting system online-this is where we get our grosses from) and parses the information into a tab separated file containing theatre name, movie title and daily grosses. In order to import the information, I call up all the records for the week I am working with. When I had two separate fm files and wanted to copy records from one to the other I would go to file a, find records I wanted, go to file b and import records from file a and get the found set. Now I have one db with table a, table b, and table c. I want to find certain records in table a and copy them (some of their fields) to table c. Then I want to find certain records in table b and copy them (some of their fields) to table c as well. When I try to import it asks for a file, doesn't let me do records from a table in the same file. (Table c will have records with first and last names chosen from table a and table :. Any ideas or is it not clear?

As can be seen in the attached screenshot, there is no 'Open Log File' to click. No log file is created either. If I copy/paste a field, it does create an Import.log file - but errors during importing records do not get logged in it (and still no button to click, either). Just curious we are about to completely overhaul our database by upgrading from FMP8 to FMP10, and setting up a Citrix Essentials application layer for our remote offices. Part of our issue is that currently, peachtree quotes are imported as file references to pdf files. I recall that the new version of peachtree accounting software runs SQL, has anyone successfully used Filemaker 10 to access Peachtree data like the quotes database?

I'm trying to export an .ics file that includes iCalendar data for use in iCal, Outlook, Google Calendar, etc. I'm using a technique from this discussion http://fmforums.com/forum/showtopic.php?tid/188654/ where I'm building my data in a single field with embedded FileMaker returns and exporting the one field from one record using Fenton's XML style sheet. The Mac version works okay, with a single line feed at the end of each line. But on the PC, I'm getting 2 line feeds, not carriage return / line feed like I would expect. Hi, We are looking to build a database that will contain a lot of pictures. To keep the database small we would like to store the pictures as a reference. Our concern is that in the future we might want to move the folders around or upgrade to FM server. How do we ensure that the picture links are not lost when we move things around? Thank you, Thomas

I am admittedly are real newbie to FMP 7. That said, I have created a new FMP 7 file. It has three tables (Names, Traps and Donations). I have an Excel file that contains the donation data, and I have converted it to a FMP 7 file. I want to import the data from the converted file into my new database, but when I try, the only fields I can see are the ones from the Names table, not the Donation table. I have a simple file with about 10 fields. The data contained needs to be exported into a .txt file. The issue I am having is that upon export the data has quotes like this: "manufacturer","masrp","keywords", is there a way to get rid of those so that it would look like: manufacturer masrp keywords I can achieve the latter by exporting as .tab however then the end user needs to manually rename the file to .txt (that is the extension that the export file has to have) which is what I am trying to avoid. Hello everyone, I am trying to see if it is possible to format the individual columns when I export. Currently, I run the report to .xls and do the following: A Column 01 (format cell>custom> 0000000 so my leading zeros are there. B Select Column 02 ( format>number< one decimal place) C Select Column 03 ( format>number< two decimal place) I then save it as a tab delimited text file to use with our Autoprice™ program. If i could get the formatting done - i could go straight to .txt, any thoughts?

Good Morning, Have used other database programs and importing was very simple. Created a blank db and a table called sales. Went to file / import records/ file and selected my csv and clicked open. There was a list of all the field names from row 1 of the csv as I've seen with other programs but the import button was grayed out. There isn't a way to create a table on the fly and define the fields after? Consulted help but basically just referred to csv as a valid file to import. Thanks for any help.

I am searching for a FM Plugin or perhaps a stylesheet that will allow me to export a a single field containing fixed length data to a file that will contain a LF character at the end of each line. Prior to version 9, I as able to do this because I could store the LF character in a calculation and insert that into the field data prior to exporting the single field as Tab Delimited (only 1 field means no tabs). Now however, FM 9 will no longer allow me to insert the LF character into a calculation. It auto-replaces the LF with a CR which throws a small kink into my automated processes. I'm having a problem with a very simple script to pick the email address field from each record in my database and create an email. The very small business I am working with uses AOL as the email client. The FM Pro v9 script works fine for the subject, text in the body, and attached file, but the email addresses are not passed. It doesn't matter if I pick the email address from the database or hardcode an address in the Send Mail command in the script. It doesn't matter if I put it in the TO, CC, or BCC field. Everything is populated in the email except the address. Has anyone had this problem with the AOL v9 client? I did try this on a test machine with Outlook Exp…

So how unique is the recordID when importing and exporting data between similar files that originate on separate FMS 10 servers? If I use the calculated field: myRecordID = Get(CurrentRecordID) and use it as the matching field when importing with create, am I setting myself up for a big disaster? Or would it be wiser to use a compound index field using the date/time, user name, and some large random number? Hoping that the multiple servers (7 btw) would not create two duplicate numbers, ever, ever, ever, for millions of records? Or am I screwed either way? Maybe one is a more kind screwing?

Hi Does anyone know how to copy a whole local directory from one place to another on the same hard drive - using filemaker of course. I have a copy of ftp_pro, it has all file manipulation options other than 'copying local Dir', I have also checked out 360 works, but there isn't an obvious module for copying local directories. Basically i'm looking to find out if it is possible to click on the thumbnails i have on my database in order to open them up to few at full size. The thumbnails are in a container field which i put there by right clicking and then "insert picture". I presume this is the right way of doing things? Hi Guys I'm seeking some help. I am new to FMP10 and am trying to develop an application to store pdfs in a table with a container for each, one record for each pdf. So far I have managed on both Win and Mac to to make a little progress. On Win drag and drop into the container works OK, but only one file at a time. The result is OK too - the front page is displayed and when I click on the pdf it opens in Acrobat Reader - just as I need. When I export data from FM in csv or xls filemaker places a symbol for the carriage return that windows displays as a little square. kind of like □ I could export in other formats as well if they don't do this. Is there a way to change this behavior?

Hi I was wondering if anyone has heard of AXF files. We receive them by email every quarter and i have to open them in excel and spend a few hours to get the excel file into an 'importable' state. If this is a very rare file then I'm guessing Filemaker won't be able to import AXF files anytime in the near future?

Hello all, Since I didn't find any geocoding scripts online that didn't use PHP, I wrote one and it is pretty versatile, just enter your google maps api key and make sure the correct fields exist on your table and that the layout uses the table with those field (if that is confusing just look at the code and it will explain it pretty well). It uses GetURLasText() in ScriptMaster (http://360works.com/scriptmaster/) Other than that its pretty simple code and works fast. Geocoding 1000 addresses took about 45 seconds or so. It uses Google's HTTP request geocode which returns a comma separated text string. Geocode.zip

I have downloaded a certified FM10 program, after the download is complete and the install finishes FM10 says "English File Templates Missing" so I return to the download and custom download the English files only, this appears to work until they disappear 20 minutes later. any ideas?

I imported a list of contacts from an excel spread sheet and when doing so the the imported items do not get ID numbers for each contact. If i switch to a table view I am able to enter ID numbers into the field, however when I create a new blank record the ID numbers given to the new record can and do repeat the same number and cause the database issue when linking to other database files. Any help on how I can get the data base to recognize all the existing ID numbers would be appreciated.

Hey all, I have 5 calculation fields that take on different field values to create a custom report based on user choices, but the exported columns in Excel are always titled "field01" and "field02". I was wondering if there is a way to customize the column headings for an Excel export to be something other than the field name, since sometimes the developer's naming conventions are cryptic at best to the user. Hi there, So.. I'm a 'noob' at Filemaker. I've just moved our Sum 12,000 contact-Database from ACT! So I can cross between Mac & PC. And Filemaker seems so much better. I basically would like to be able to load up a PDF in one-click say 'PDF 1' and then Print it right out. Ideally I'd like to be able to do this with some pictures too.. -- We're basically a Horse Ranch, people can adopt the Horses etc. And after I enter them up in the Database we print them a form and a picture of the Horse they've adopted. So it would be neat to click on the horses picture in a new layout I've called Horses and it'd print the photo.. Then on a button next to the picture…

I have read several posts about 10 Adv (or 10) being slow, and I too have experienced it, including the bug about speed with very large text fields. One of the problems might be tunnelling for related data. I tried two scenarios for exporting 1500 records with ~50 numerical fields; these records hold ~5 related fields. In scenario 1, I tried to export the related fields as related fields: VERY SLOW. In scenario 2, I copied the related field data into new fields in the table from which I am exporting, and this sped things up. It is still not fabulous (any ideas why??) but it is ten times faster than when I export making reference to related fields. This makes me think that…

Hi... Am currently updating a solution from FM6 to FM10. The database imports pictures (reference only), where the pictures are stored in a folder within the same folder as the FM database. In 6, the reference to the picture file was relative - ie. if I ultimately moved the entire solution folder, all of the pictures would still show up in the same place. In 10, it appears that though the link is supposed to be relative (ie. the 'import folder' is specified as 'Pics/'), the actual file path stored in the picture contained is absolute - ie. if I move the entire solution folder, the pictures vanished and are replaced by 'can't find img_whatever' messages. …

For a variety of reasons, I'm trying to import a folder full of text files into a FM10 table, with the entire contents of each file appearing as one field of one record, and the title of the file appearing as another field of the same record. I am using: Import Records > Folder then specifying the folder path. Unfortunately, this fails because the files within the folder are supplied with the '.csv' file extension (even though they are not .csv files) - FM is clearly seeing the '.csv' extension and deciding to reject the file based on that. Is there any way of telling FM to 'get over it' - ie. to force it to treat files within a folder …

The OLD.SCR file, inside the file, "OLD SOLUTION", will reside on the computer's Desktop while the new one will reside in a USB 'thumb' drive. What I want to do is script the import process. I created an animation in Photoshop Extender CS4. I rendered it to several different video files; QuickTime movie and MPEG-4. When I try to insert any of these, I get this message in the container. ' The file cannot be found; StarField/galaxy.mp4"(or .mov). I can insert other movies obtained else where and I have compared file information and I see no difference. Haven't used FM in many years. Got trial version of FMPro10, set up new database and started importing text from a set of PDFs. The font I selected in FM was ignored and I have a mixture of Helvetica/TNR/Arial. Is there a global way of rendering everything to one font, one point size, one style?

I am trying to import about 85000 gif files to filemaker and got an error message that I haven't used to before "error, no enough memory to compelet this task" after importing 28000 record. I did the similar type of import to filemaker on other machine with same filemaker version, and have no error at all. I have a report layout that does exactly what I want. See pictures. (The Total Sales field is a summary field.) BUT, when I export this report from Preview Mode, it looks nothing like the Preview. I've tried tinkering with sorting and grouping, to no avail. Exporting to Excel gets me a little bit closer. There must be a way to export precisely what is shown in the preview, no?

First of all, I don't know much about FileMaker, by that, I am completely new to it. Second, I am a new member to this forum and I am not sure if this question is even the right section. Now with that out of the way, what I am trying to do is convert a backup of a FileMaker Moblie 8 file to a regular .fp7 What I am working with is "filename_fp7.PDB. I have tried everything to find a way to convert it, first attempt being just renaming it to .fp7, which obviously did not work. So, with all that said, I am absolutely stuck with this.

Hi , I am importing records from oracle database via odbc. but it is importing only 3 records where there are 100 records in the oracle table. I m using trial version of fm10. can anyone tell why it is importing only three records ? Here's the bug: I'm exporting some records from FileMaker 8.5v2 to excel. Some cells have data in them some cells are empty. I open the excel file in Office 2008 and 2003, latest updates applied, and select any row and apply a colored background. I save the document and when I reopen it the cells that are empty don't retain the formatting. Don't suggest these fixes, I already tried these, with no success: - did a "save as..." so as to work on a "new" file - copy and pasted the data from FileMaker excel file to a new excel file (no formatting, just as pure text with the special paste command) - opened an empty, brand new excel document and colored some…

We have an Access 2003 database that is set up to append records to several FMS tables using the SequeLink ODBC driver. We are having problems with floating point numbers in the way I'm sure many people are already familiar with (such as 1.1 is now 1.1000000000000000888, as described in another post). Is there a way to adjust the append from Access to eliminate this problem? Or else, what about exporting records from a layout to Excel using the number formatting that is in the layout setup for that field?

I spent HOURS last night, adding 1500 records to a FM table. Today, I used File->Send to an Excel File. I'm on Mac Office 2008. I created a Pivot Table. I copied and pasted the data from the pivot table to values. I'm trying to add lines and borders - as usual - within Excel. For some reason, when I work with this data (either in the original file or if I copy and paste the data to a new workbook) - the line commands are REVERSED! ie, if I want to add vertical lines, I wind up with horizontal lines. if I specify I want horizontal lines, I get vertical! I have data in an excel document that was exported from a different database that I would like to import into FM 8.5. The problem is, that the data in excel is not contained in one row or column, but rather, each record is spread out over several rows and columns. I'm having a hard time getting the data to import properly. Hi, I have looked but not found a complete answer to this frequently discussed topic. My FM9 DB is on PC at work (with very limited access ) but I have a Mac at home, and would like the DB to migrate between platforms either copied locally or run from an external drive. Currently on my PC there are 9000 external items (largely images, pdf) that are only referenced by a PC path. How do I insert a variable (drawn from a global field) that will change the image path depending on which platform and any drive that I am working on. Hi, I am new to filemaker. I have a problem that i need to solve immediately. I have two tables, contact table and dre taable. I have contact ID as a primary key in contact table and contact ID as a foreign key in dre table. Where in dre table I have dre ID as a primary key and I have set this a foreign key in contact table. Both of these tables have same fields like first name, second name, street address, city and zip. My target here is to merge all the data that I have inside first name, second name, street address, city and zip from dre table with that in contact table. Any help from you would be a life saver!

Is it possible to export font styles from FileMaker pro into Excel or XML? I can't seem to find anything in the help document about this. Preferably, it would be nice to have the data in XML with tags around the text that has font styles applied. Any ideas! thanks

I have a database that lists projects that can have multiple people tied to the project . I would like to have a way to create one row for each project and list all of the people tied to the project. In PDF it looks okay, but when I download to Excel I get blank lines. I am currently using a portal to display the multiple people. Having problems with repetitve numbers when importing an .xlsx file into FMP 10. In my excel file, I have a field that shows only 2 numbers after the decimal, but when I import it into FMP, it has repeating numbers after the decimal. I have figured out how to make it show only 2 digits in the field that it is importing into. However, I have a calcualation that includes this field and the returning number for the calculation is showing repeating numbers after the decimal. I have changed the number of repetitions in the options to 1, and it still repeats. Any ideas?

I have a client that will have multiple locations in different states using FM 10 Pro or Runtime solution for our application we are developing. The owner of the businesses wants a solution that he can run from his desktop that allows him to see consolidated data from all locations. We are appending to the front of all UIDs the 2 digit processing center id. So two files: Module File and Parent File I have a subset of tables in the module file that pertains to the off site requirements. When off sight, the user can enter data, but can't created new records. When they return, they need to update the parent file by importing from the module file to the parent file. First let me say I'm primarily a .Net developer but I've inherited this FM project. I need to read some static values from either an ini, xml, registry wherever (not particular on where it lives). Basically what this is for is to statically assign a value(s) to a Point of Sale register. For example the obvious would be the register number. I have bought a 3rd party solution with Full Access and privileges to modify and use it in my solutions. Can I import it to my solution as one of the tables ? Is includes several Custom Functions. Are they included in the import process ? Yes, it could be possible to link to another file from my solution, but my FM hosting allows only one file.
