We have Filemaker Server 14. We are hosting about 10 files for local/internal use with Filemaker Pro and public access via WebDirect. We also have a few large backup files that are only accessed occasionally, and only by one person at a time. I would usually keep these in the backups directory along with the scheduled backups. It has been suggested to put them in the databases folder and host them. Is that a waste of computing power, if these files are opened and served by FMS but rarely used, or is the use of resources insignificant if these files are not being accessed? I don't want anything unnecessarily slowing FMP or WebDirect performance. WS 2008 R2, 8Gb Ram

Since upgrading a server from FMS11 to FMS14, we've seen periodic (about weekly) crashes of the FileMaker Script Engine (FMSE also called fmsaed or fmse). Anyone else seeing this? The two most recent crashes are shown below. They don't look like a crash in the same location, but they both look like a crash entirely within the FileMaker framework. ( We had an earlier crash which was due to Dacons Mail.It plugin crashing, but we believe we solved that issue and it doesn't seem to be relevant for these crashes). Any ideas? OSX 10.10.5 with all updates. FMSA 14v1 (We haven't updated to FMS14v2 yet as the release notes don't suggest any reason to).

I have a student records solution into which I regularly want to import attendance data that's coming from Excel files. Each day's attendance is stored in 7 separate Excel files. The user populates the files, then runs a script to import and process them. When I was developing the solution on a stand alone machine I set up a table that contains the path and filenames of the 7 files that the script loops through. If I ever had to move to different paths or decided to change file names, I could just change the paths and names in the table. Fast forward to trying to implement this solution via FMServer (...FMServer newbie alert!). I figure I can just put those files..…

Hello All, I need to rename a couple of files hosted on the Server. I am working on a Mac and the file is hosted on a PC Server. I assume I have to download the file, and then use Developer Utilities to rename. I guess I should download to my Mac, but how do I do this through Remote Desktop Access? The option to download brings up the dialog box shown in the attachment. Is this the proper way to do this? I don't want to bother my Server administrator if I don't have to. Any guidance is much appreciated.

Hello all, I am trying to get the output from RunShellScript: If I load the scriptmaster demo database on my server and from a web browser connection go to the scriptmaster database and load the script "Run Shell Script" put in the desired cmd and click "Run Script" the expected results are returned. To my understanding the "Run Script" button basically will call EvaluateGroovy( demo::script ). So I then copy the code in demo::script to a field in my production database (i.e. prod:script) Then from my production database I call EvaluateGroovy( prod:script ). The function does not return an error, it returns nothing. Other scriptmaster function calls are working on …

Hi all, many months ago I tried to install FMS13 on Server 2012 R2 which went well apart from a few hiccups. I am now setting up a new server to host FMS14 again on Server 2012 R2 but I've hit a snag. Unlike last time where FMS13 was the first thing I installed, this time I've installed all of the domain services and setup the domain. Now when I run the installer it says that the ports are in use. I've tried disabling the processes buts made no difference. There is nothing in IIS that's now using ports 443, 50003 or 50004 but it keeps telling me that they are in use. Has anybody got any advice? Thanks George Brewer

Since we upgraded to Windows ver.14 server and workstations, I (as administrator) am constantly getting the following email message when users log in: "2015-09-15 09:14:23.987 -0700 Warning 661 ABCdbDC001 Client "Bruce (Bruce-THINKPAD) [192.168.16.81]" authentication failed on database "ABCdb.fmp12" using "Bruce [fmapp]"." This happens whether the user logs on correctly or not. All users are using windows and only one file is opened with logging in. Does anyone have any insight into this issue? Thanks, Bruce

OK, I know I will be embarrassed by the simple answer. I'm going to upgrade from Server 13 to 14 and it says move/copy the database files located /Library/FileMaker Server That folder does not exist. I am running a mac mini specifically to run server. There is nothing else on it. In the library folder there's nothing. Where else to look?

I talked to Steve Blackwell at Devcon and he suggested I post this question here. When I check my server logs on the admin console the event 661 authentication failed comes up a lot. It appears for all or most users a several times a week. No one had trouble logging on. I have posted a screen shot. I believe Steve thought it might be related to auto log on so I posted that screen shot as well (Hope I remembered that correct) Another odd thing is at the end of each line is "using "User[fmapp]" sometimes reads "Admin[fmapp]", sometimes reads "The Logon name[fmapp]". I don't have a user or extended privilege called "User". What does this represent.

I recently switched from FileMaker Server 13 on a Mac to 14.02 using Windows 2012, and with new equipment as well. One hosted file has the annoying habit of trying to summarize a field after the credentials are properly entered, but before the startup script starts to execute, and before any window/layout is drawn on the screen. This happens with either FMPA14 Mac client or FMPA13 Windows clients. The summary notice will stay for several seconds, making it very noticeable and mildly annoying. The file was built with an older version of FileMaker (starting with v9), and has been upgraded since then. This is the first time that this has been noticed, although it may …

I'm having a similar problem to others but not exactly the same. While logged in to the server, I can access the Admin Console without a problem using https://localhost:16001/admin-console. However, if I try it from a remote computer using https://10.1.1.70:16000/admin-console I get various errors: Firefox: Secure Connection Failed The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. I'm happy to report that FileMaker Server 14 seems to work just fine with OS X 10.10.3 / Server.app 4.1, and the experience overall is better than with 10.9 and FMS13. Here are my tips & hints: During installation, you will be asked which Ports to use for HTTP and HTTPS. Since OS X server already uses 80 and 443 by default, you should pick different ones. You can see a list of which ones to avoid here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202944 (Note: usually ports below 1024 require root permissions. I chose two in the 8000s and it worked fine) During Deployment, on the step where it tries to Test the Webserver, it fails. I think this is just a bug in the D…

I have had intermittent problems in the past sending out multiple emails (in a loop, up to 50 emails) using the Send Mail script step. Some of the emails can fail to send. I was put in touch with an IT support person in the university where I work, and he thought that the problem might be solved by sending via an SMTP server intended specifically for applications and therefore equipped to handle the high volumes and fast speeds of the multiple emails produced by a looping set of send instructions. The prefix for the SMTP server is appsmtp rather than smtp. I gave him the IP address for my version of FM Server 14, and he created the necessary firewall exception. However, …

THE UPSHOT OF THIS POST IS that in a new install of FMS v14 on a dedicated Windows machine, it's reliably hosting my dozen databases across 15 or so client machines, but I'm totally unable to access it from a browser remotely. FM customer support says I should be in good shape and they can't explain my problems. I'm going to throw in all the details I can think of and see what happens. ------------------------------------------- I'm throwing everything at the wall here in hopes something will stick. We're a public library that uses the software to track all of our internal metrics and publish an XML feed to a Web site. For 4 years, we had a Dell machine, Windows 7 Pro,…

I purchased the filemaker server license with 1 allowed remote connection. Sometimes filemaker server will allow me to connect, other times it won't (with the same wifi). I'm not sure if this is an issue with my connection or if because someone else is logged on remotely at the same time this is blocking the server from being available. I would think if this is the case (since I only paid for 1 remote license at a time) an error message would come up with (maximum connections) or something to that extent rather than the server not being available. Any thoughts on this? Matt

Hi Guys, I'm working on a database based on the Selector-Connector principle (and so far am liking it, thanks LaRetta!) but have stumbled onto something I'm not getting. I started out developing this DB on my workstation as a local DB, and this morning uploaded it to the server (a FMSv14) to test it on an iPad to see how the UI looks and feels. In my DB I have a table for all my menus I use in the UI, On each layout I show the user the name of the layout (see in red below). This is not the actual layout name, but rather the menu text in the menu. The layout name is not necessarily a text that is suited for display (ie, my menu table is called UI_Menu, but I wouldn't …

I have noticed for quite a while now (a few years) that often when I try to reopen a hosted file that FMPA will spin for 20-30 seconds and respond with "file not available on this server..." error. But upon retrying it a 2nd time, it always comes right up. Anyone else run into this? This has happened on FMS12, 13 and 14 for me. This has been across multiple servers (same client location), different machines/clients, and different files. It has been just a minor annoyance so I haven't tracked it real well: I can't attest to whether it happens every single time I open the file; or perhaps it is only after leaving the office (after properly shutting a file down), and t…

I have FMS 14 installed on my development computer. I have had a long-standing problem with accessing FMS 14 Admin Console in Safari. On the Start Admin Console page, the fields for username and password are not displayed in the dialog. My workaround has been to access it in Chrome. But now, when I try to address 127.0.0.1:16000 in Chrome, I see a No Data Received ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE screen. I tried to update Java from build 31 to build 51 with no change. This is FMS 14.0 v1 on OS X 10.10.4. Can anyone shed some light on either of these problems?

I ran into an odd problem. I was triggering a script to run on the server via the XML interface (yes, the old one). I was passing credentialls for a [Full Access] account. The script was pretty simple, just going to a layout, create a record, set a field. However, it was giving me an error: ...XML 200 1071 Web Scripting Error: 200, File: "AFile", Script: "Handler", Script Step: "New Record/Request"... I was able to fix this error by turning on the 'run with full access' on the script itself. But I was already logged in as full access, so why did I have to do this extra step? (Side note: this script worked just fine if I made the XML call directly from a web brows…

I'm getting resistance from a client's IT vendor to opening ports 16000 and 16001 so that I can administer the client's server without having to remote access in using GoToMyPC. The IT vendor is concerned that FileMaker Server uses Java. I thought I remembered hearing that this was not the case beginning with 13, but I see that Java is still listed as a requirement. So my question is two-fold: Does Server 13/14 still need Java and use it as the interface into the Admin Console? If so, and the most recent version of Java is installed, is this still a security issue?

Haven’t found post of this problem so here I go. Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Everything ran nominally under Server13, external authentication After upgrading to Server14 (following instruction meticulously) none of the databases would show up until I unchecked “List only the databases each user is authorized to access”. When unchecked all the databases show to all users but they can only enter the one’s they have access to. This tells me that the External Authentication is still working properly but the File Display Filter is no longer working. Note: this happens with all client connection types, Windows, Mac, Web-Direct, and GO. Any help would be appreciated.

Hey everyone, Just upgraded to filemaker server 14, and for some reason when I'm logging in to the server from home I can only connect using my old filemaker pro 13 application. The filemaker 14 mac application and filemaker 14 go application do not recognize any files when I type in my ip address. Thoughts? Also, I'm a bit new at using the server/ip/over internet from home, I'm using an ip address in this format 2605:e000:a40a:5900:3850 Is that the correct format? It works with filemaker 13 and my files appear but just wanted to verify. Thanks! Matt

Hi all, Running FMS on a Windows VPS it seems it wants more and more Ram. There is only 10 clients max at any one time connected via FM Pro. Usually not that much. I have noticed if it reaches the limit for the RAM then FMS turns off web publishing automatically. Just wondering what other people may be using or could advise me on maybe why it is so ram hungry. Hi there I'm working on a task at the moment which involves sorting around 65000 records on a data table. The table itself has many occurrences but I only need to sort on this particular occurrence, therefore my sort criteria (ClientID, Date) are based on this occurrence. The issue is that when I sort the data on my local PC, it takes maybe two seconds to sort, calculate and display. For the task in mind, this is perfectly acceptable as I won't be doing it too often. However, now this has been deployed on a server which is more than up to the task and exceeds the recommended spec, the sort takes several minutes with a countdown of records sorted slowly going from 650…

I'm sorry, forum - you serve a merely psychotherapeutic purpose today. I came here merely to VENT - because I have given up any hope that FileMaker will ever get its act together. As I am sure many of you have suffered through also, even the slightest one of software updates in either Filemaker or any of the supporting packages - from Java to OS X - will almost certainly result in an entirely unpredictable and prohibitively nonsensical trail of incompatibility issues, software errors, or warning messages that will wreck your system. Remember how, when FMS 12 came out, Web Publishing would keep crashing at random intervals and had to be restarted manually? Remember …

Hi Everyone, We are about to upgrade our server from 13 to 14. In the FMS 14 getting started guide it states: "Make a copy of any database files and shell script files you used with FileMaker Server." and gives the database location: "\Program Files\FileMaker\FileMaker Server\Data\Databases" My question is do we need to make a copy of the other contents in this folder, namely "RC_Data_FMS" with all of the externally stored container data? Moreover, after we uninstall 13 and install 14 will we have to move it back to the same location? The guide only mentions database and script files so I was unsure what needs to be copied. Thanks for your help. Daniel

I have an OS X server (10.10.3 running Server.app) which is accessed two ways: via an internal LAN network using FileMaker Pro, also via WebDirect to the public via a WAN connection through a firewall. This may be too premature to tell at this time, but has anyone either tested and/or running in production FMS 14, but with 13 clients? I would suspect there shouldn't be any major issues, except for new client features (like reconnect to server), which is nothing new based on past releases. The one item that I am mostly concerned with is using 13.0v5 clients. We are using a purchased certificate for secure connections, but haven't upgrade the clients and server to 13.0v9 yet. Will there be any issues with this, or will I have to at least upgrade the clients to 13.0v9 for compatibility with server 14? Any gotchas that you've noticed will be very appreciated to me!

Do I need to upgrade to Server 14 or... Since the file format is still .fmp12, are there any issues hosting a file created or modified with FMP 14 on FMS 13. I would think that the server is just pushing the data out, and FMP 14 is rendering the data, everything would work without any issues. Is my thinking correct? Michelle
