FileMaker Legacy fp3 and fp5

Hi, I wonder if it is possible to have a a table as a field? I'm aware of the table function, but apparently that pertains having records in rows and fields in colums. I guess what I'm looking for is something akin to a repeating field for which I could have multiple rows and assign headers. Thus, each "row" would behave as an entity and "cell" of that row a seperate data item attributed to that row--all wrapped up in a single field. Thanks in advance. Like many others, I cannot figure out how to set up FMU. So help me please! Here is what I have: 1. FM server is hosting some FM dBs on a win2000 server machine 2. one copy of FMU 6.0 3. I do need web server connector installed in order to use SSL. 4. For the upcoming online db, there will be no traffic. I expect less than 10 users every day I know I need webserver box(es), my question is can I install both FMU and web server connector in one box? if so, how should I configure to connector? if not, is there any workaround? say install FMU or the WSC on the file server? I really don't want to buy two PCs, one for WSC and one for FMU. Thanks…

I'm running FM6 for a computer inventory database. I want to be able to somehow create reports that can tell me how many PCs are in building X, how many have a X CPU, or X RAM. I assume this can be done but don't know where to begin doing it. Can someone point me in the correct direction? Thanks, Brad

We are having a problem with the mouse while in FileMaker Pro 5. It's fading in and out and quivering. We've replaced the Mac mouse with a PC mouse... Still the same problem. Tested the mouse in Quark and other programs and there is no problem. FileMaker Pro appears to be running slower also... Can anyone help?

I downloaded a Zip Code database which uses a script to open using a password. The author say to hold the "options key" when opening to open the password dialog box (I have the password). Since the option key is in Mac, how would I do this in Windows?

Hi, all. I've been logging stats from FMS3 since mid-May. We run into occasional "system" delays wherein one user's activity brings others to a standstill -- the appearance of The Coffee Cup Icon. I have come to the understanding that this is usually due to FMS halting data distribution while that user's workstation does its crunching. Does this sound like an accurate assessment? Secondly, I am wondering if the stats I've gathered point to a weakness in our system that can be easily/inexpensively addressed. For example... Hi all -- I'm thinking about yanking my website from my current host and hosting it myself in-house. My guess is I need FMP 6 Unlimited because my site is all CDML and incompatible with FMP 7. I would then get a T1 or SDSL connection with a static IP (currently using dynamic IP ADSL) and serving the thing on either an old G4 Mac or perhaps buy an XServe Mac. Am I missing anything important? Anything else I should think about? Harder than it seems?

I'm looking for a trick to be able to present the user with a dialog before they exit FM to verify that they really wanted to exit... I have users who occasionally "hit the little X" to close the window and inadvertantly wind up closing FM instead of just the window and I'm trying to protect the innocent from themselves... Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated....

I have created a group and password with limited privliges within the database. I set the database to automatically enter that password at opening, and now I can't get back in with my password to access the entire file and make changes. The "change password" option is grayed out, as it the ability to change any of the document preferences, including the "login with this password" option. Any suggestions? Or I have locked myself out forever.

Filemaker setup is Server 3 on MacOS 9.1/ASIP6.x, Client 4.1 running on MacOS 9.2.2. Clients are configured to access the server via TCP/IP. When they go to file -> open -> hosts, they get the squigly arrow (network busy) for up to 10+ minutes before the hosts listing actually appears. Any ideas on what could be causing this? This started happening after a demo of FMP 5.5 was installed on one machine on the network (since been unisntalled), although I suspect the timing was coincidental.

I am trying to schedule a script and have 2 problems - an answer to either one will solve my problem. Loop Script - seems to stop after a certain number of loops, sometimes it will last 100's of time and sometime only a handful - it appears to be related to activity on the PC or memory as it work perfectly all weekend when nobody is in the office but at a peak period lasts only 4 or 5 loops. It is a send mail script with no "end loop if" option. Filemaker Cannot Be found and is required to complete this operation. Hi all, We are looking at upgrading from FM5 to FM7, I have a trial version but when I open a FM5 database it converts it then promptly hangs. Nothing works and I have to kill the application. Is there a process to upgrade databases, does anyone else have these problems. Thanks

I've built a website with a lot of CDML & FMPro queries in http links. I'm using web companion to serve the pages out. Problem is the pages are slow to load, it waits for FMU to finish searching the database records before it appears. My database has around 10,000 records and it runs on Windows 2003 Server. Would running FM Server help? Any help is appreciated.

Dear all, I am administering a shared database running on an FMP 5.5 Server and accessed by a mixture of v5.5 and v6 users on a variety of Mac and PC platforms. As staff leave and are replaced, the users' identites are getting out of sync with the people actually using the system. I've just sucumbed to the latest FM promotional offer and purchased the "last-chance" upgrade from v 4.1 to v7. I've now got the software and all the licence codes ready to go. Problem is, I don't yet have (and can't really afford for a while) a whole new PC complete with the necessary XP operating system to run it. This is, no doubt, a pretty bone-headed question, but here goes: I've got a dataset with 84 fields...but I can only view the first 66 fields in Table view. They all show up in the 'define fields' dialog box as well as Layout view, but I can't tab past the 66th field, nor can I do a find in one of these later fields (except in Layout view). (Just in case, yes, I've scrolled all the way to the right in the window!) Note that I've imported these data from a comma-separated text file. Post-import, 'define fields' does indicate that there are 84 (actually 85, but that's another story). Help!

Essentially I'm trying to implement a mail merge type situation where an editable text field contains tokens/markers that later get replaced with other field values from the database. This editable field contains text of varying styles (some bold, underline, centered, etc.). I have noticed that there is a very usefull function in FMP v7. It enables you to change the file paths to the other files. While upgrading my database to v7 I noticed that there is a list of different file paths for just one script or relation file. One relative path and one to the root of my HD. Is there a way or a utility around, that enables me to change the filepath of my FMP v5 database? This would really save me a lot of time having to do this in v7. I have noticed that relocating the file does not really do the trick. Even buggy at some point. With filemaker Pro the file is located but when I make it Runtime it can't find the file. thanks...

Hi, I'm just trying to configure Web Server Connector to work with FMU6 on another machine, but when I try to set it up with the FMU6 host, it reports "! Unable to read database names" and leaves it at that. We've been running successfully for some months now without WSC, but are looking to expand our options. Config: 1. G4 Xserve running 10.3.5 (fully patched as of this morning) and Apache/WSC. 2. B&W G3 Server running 10.2.8 and FMU6v4 with fully-patched Web Companion. Any ideas? Cheers, Kevin Futter

My company is getting ready to upgrade FileMaker (v6 for clients, v5.5 for server) after having used 5 (both Server and client) for many years. We've just upgraded all the Macs in the office to OSX so the Classic-only 5 is far too clunky now but we're not quite willing to take the plunge into the all-new 7 yet. Can someone give me an idea of how easy/hard it'll be to update our FM5 software, including client and server, to FM6? Will our database files be ok? I need to figure an efficient way to duplicate data from one layout and get it to a second layout. my fields are address1, city1 , state1, zip1 and prim address, prim city, prim state, and prim zip. The majority of the time the original data will be the same and need to be entered in the prim fields. So what I want to do is figure a way to check a box and have the info duplicated into the prim fields. My thought was similar to those used with credit card billing info and shipping addresses. Check the box if the shipping address is the same as billing address. Any thoughts on how to go about this.......

I have 7 related databases that are used to keep track of audio recordings (and orders for those recordings), for a church community. I've been using them for about a year on this machine, 2 yrs total - without any major problems. Yesterday, when I tried to open the main database, "Orders", FM "unexpectedly quit". So I recovered Orders and tried again, same thing. Next I recovered all 7 dbs, tried again, same thing. Ever since I upgraded my machine to 10.3, FMP 5.5 Unlimited hangs once a day. It hangs so bad I have to force quit. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm using FMP 5.5v2, web companion 5.5v4. I've even reinstalled FMP. I suspect the problem is one of my many applescripts that interact w/FMP, but it's almost impossible for me to isolate what exactly is causing it to hang. I've got a layout with about 130 calculation fields on it (mostly numeriical) which involve both related fields (from only 1 other database) and each other. I'm getting up to 15 second delays every time I do anything (change record, enter data into a field, run a simple script) from this layout. The computer has over 500MB of ram, it's a 2004 G4 iMac. This thing can handle 3D real-time graphics but not filemaker calculations? Seems like something must be wrong. We are a non-profit with a membership database of almost 2000 records. We keep old members, current members & life members in this database. I have set up another database for deceased members, as we don't just want their data to disappear, but don't want them on the 'mailing' list anymore, either. I have been hearing of general weirdness with filemaker 6 on OSX in native mode. My lcient run's a bound solution and they've been reporting things like it crashing when they follow a script call that uses gotorelated record between two files. Also I've been told of records changing their relationship so that the point at a different record as in an invoice with line items scenario. I have an inventory related problem. I have two simple databases for verifying stock counts in a warehouse. The first has the fields "Barcode", "Description", "Size", and "Cost". The second has the fields "Barcode" "Description", "Stock Count", "Stock Count Total", and "Cost Value". Been a dabbler for years, but still a novice. I've got this simple project tracking/invoicing app I've built. One of my layouts contains a list of active projects with various data (dates, client name, the usual). But once in a while I need to make a lengthy note to one of my projects. Right now I've made a second line on my layout. But it clutters up the list view, or leaves a blank line when nothing is there. Is there a simple way to click a button and bring up a popup window so I can load in the detailed notes then close it again when I'm done? Kinda like a web page popup. Is that possible with FM6? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

We have a solution that has several databases. We us an interface that writes to all of the related records in the various databases. Example: A unique # is assigned to a case. That case will create records in DB1 DB2 and DB3, the unique# being the relationship. When a user opens the frontend interface they can write to DB1,2,and 3. In FM 2 people can't be modifing the same record. Is there a workaround were they can. We need the user to be able to go into the frontend and modify DB1 on one screen while another user is modifing DB2 on another screen. thanks in advance for your help

What do I need to know/do to write a database w/ FM6 on OS X and deploy it on a PC with FM6?

Field1 is a number field that could contain one of several values. Field2 is the auto-entry field by calculation using the "case" function. If a user enters a wrong value in field1 and exits the field but then goes back to change the value, field2 retains the original auto-entered value. I have tried including a value in the "case" statement to blank out field2 if field1 is empty. I have tried using an "If" statement before and after the "case" statement. No luck. Is there a way to get the auto-entry field(2) to change if the user re-enters the field1 to enter a different value?

Hi there, just want to ask is that any to hide the status bar on the bottom site by using a script. Because sometime i need to hide it manually on a seperate pc. And the other thing is can i disable the minimize button on all the FM files. After compile, the close button will disable, but minimize abutton still function. I've got a question on when I'd want/need to use MenuControl and when I'd be able to just use FileMaker to achieve my goal. I want to remove (meaning "get rid of so they're not visible", not "disable") all menus in a runtime solution for Mac and Windows. Hello, Has anyone had a problem where the fonts displayed on screen change to a different font? We are running FMP6.0 on a few machines, all accessing a server running FMServer 5.5. The OS on the machines is Win XP. The problem is only occurring in Filemaker, we have other applications running and they don't have this problem. Originally we thought that it was a corrupted font, so checked them all but it has not cured it. The problem occurs in a number of files, but not always at the same time. I ask because one of my colleagues, an admitted speed-freak, has been hitting <Command => by accident recently, while he has been meaning to hit <Shift => to get a "+" symbol. Being the speed demon that he is, when the Replace Contents dialogue appears, he doesn't even read the buttons and keeps going for the left one, which he whines is usually Cancel in most programs. I would like to be able to navigate though my records via Alpha buttons (A-Z) and I have not been able to any script commands to do this. I can go to record #x but I am not sure how to go to record with customers names beginning with "C". I know that I can do a find to isolate the "C" customers but I would prefer to just "goto" said customers.

I have a strange problem with Filemaker. I work for a school district. One of the departments uses a filemaker database hosted on a filemaker 5.5 server on our intranet. This database consistantly crashes filemaker 6 on start up. In other works if you double click on the database, Filemaker will open to the point of asking for the password. Once you enter the password, filemaker immediately crashes. The database works in filemaker 5 but you can not open it in fm6! My colleague needs occasional access to the DB at the same time as I am using it. We are both using Windows PCs and FM Pro v5.5. FMP has been winning awards, its company support looks good, it has cross platform, etc, etc. So it seems like a good candidate on my short list (so is Alpha 5, but even more so VizFox Pro, or C#, but using the latter two means I'd miss out on leveraging the existing functionality built in to Alpha 5 and esp. Hello, here is my question. One user logged on our database and clicked a button which takes her to go to another file layout. When that file opened, it will freeze up for a couple of minutes to display all the fields and portals. When she tried to add a new record, the value list takes for ever to load. I checked every other user went to that layout without any problem. Do you have any idea about this? Thanks!

Hi Is there an easy way to upgrade the FMP database at the end user sites, without having to save clone/empty files and then import them 1 by 1? I don't mean from FMP6 to FMP7. I mean just a new version of the same solution, but maintaining the users data. If there is no easy way, then has anyone tried making a batch file or similar? How do I check the time on a frequent basis to run a script? I want to shift the application to single user for 1 hour during a scheduled nightly backup. But I don't see how to check the time without just making a loop that will tie up resources.

Hello All, I've searched the forums for any advice on conditional text color formatting, but it seems that this is a new option in FM 7. My question, is there a way to approximate this effect in FM 5? More specifically, I have a DB (call it DB_one) that will display names on a schedule table using data from DB_two (relationships have all been defined and work properly). I would however like to have these names displayed differently according to specific information from DB_two. Hello, I have a lovely FMP6 solution that we previously used under Mac OS 9, over the summer we have moved to OS X. Now, every one of my scripts that Maximizes a window causes the resulting window to be displayed behind the dock. Filemaker has graciously acknowledged the problem, but offer no advice or recourse. I'm new to FileMaker and am trying to create a script that allows me to download a pdf file. I want to match the AD ID with the appropriate pdf of the ID and then using a button to download the file. Any help would be appreciated since I'm not even sure where to begin. I've tried a few things so far, but none of them have seemed to work. Is there a way to declare variables in Scripts inside FileMaker? I would need to do this because the AD ID changes with each record. Thank you in advance!

I am still working with FMP 4.1 on a Mac OS 9.2. I am working on a database that contains 14 layouts in which data is collected which ultimately needs to be output as a report in .pdf format. I currently have it set up where 14 .pdf documents can be generated and compiled into a single document back in Acrobat Distiller. However, on the Mac, inserting the pages does not do so in alphabetical order, so they have to be manually adjusted afterwards. I am experimenting with running the entire report, with all the necessary fields, in/on a single layout. I have a portal set to show three rows of fields - but which may contain more than three. I want a field elsewhere on the layout indicating how many rows of the portal have been filled. ie: if there are 7 rows filled, it will only display three but the field outside the portal will display '7'. Hello, I am building a database in fp 6 and I was hoping to get some feedback at the planning stage rather than when I am pulling out my hair. Data will be entered into 5 separate forms and will be captured in 1 filemaker file. I am planning on creating the 1 file and then making portals in 5 files all pointing back to the master file. I am choosing this method because changes made in either file will show up in the other file and the data in the master file should export successfully. I have a numeric field in db file A, in which I enter "0,5" (using "," instead of "." before the decimals is the norwegian standard - set in the Mac OS system settings) Then I have a calculation field in db file B which is just: relationship::numeric field. I am a new user to Filemaker. I have FM 6, which I brought two months before FM7 came out. I want to move my contacts from Palm Desktop (Windows XP)to FM 6 on Windows XP. I converted the contacts in Desktop to CSV. I choose Contacts as a template. However, a lot of fields are missing in Contacts, such as "country." Has anyone created a template that maps from the generic Palm contacts to a FM 6 template. I was told by Filemaker Tech Support to contact the forum to see if someone has developed something like this. Otherwise, Support said to build my own using the Contacts as a start. I'm generating a report where I'm Summarizing data by Month/Year. The problem I'm having is the dates need to correspond to our company's fiscal calendar. So something with a date 7/1/2004 would need to go under the month/year 06/2004 (since according to our Fiscal calendar, that item happened in "fiscal" June). Does anyone have any ideas for how to create a calculation field that performs this conversion? BTW I noticed a function in version 6 called "WeekofYearFiscal", would that be useful in this instance?

I have designed a two page layout (approx 130 fields) Page one (a proposal) can have up to 2 items listed. Each item consists of 14 repeating fields. Version 4.1v3 Status area Layout List. I work on several PC's all with FMP version 4.1v3. While in Layout mode With that Status area displayed the top button will list all the layouts I am using. Problem on some of the PC's the Layout list is in a column and on the other Pc's the list of layouts is accross the screen. Hi all, Me again! On the hunt for some sort of table/chart/matrix listing interoperability between various flavors of FMS and FMP (client). i'm slowly driving myself mad with frustration from trying to get a working group of db's for my small business: I have files for clients, work records, goods, job pricing, and invoicing, plus a simple book keeping file showing in and out payments. The thing is, I do a lot of invoices that consist of labour(from work records)only, and so i want the details to appear in the work records file, the job pricer file, and then finally the invoice file, plus the invoice total and number to appear in the book keeping file. Client's DB performance (server 3.0 on NT/client 4.0 on NT) was fine for 6-8 years and suddenly it's unusably slow. When client selects certain report options from the server, they get a status message that report is taking so long because it's sorting through unindexed records, then it lists the name of a field. Now what I want is that whenever the record is of type PAY_IN I would like the serial number to increase, but if I add a PAY_OUT the serial number shouldn't change. I've set up a database in our solution to record magazine titles, and we've been putting low-res cover scans (30kb at most) into container fields and serving these images using the web companion. I'm worried about the size of the database though. There's about 150 records with these images but the database file is about 8MB in size already. We'll be looking to probably treble that record number. 1) I was wondering if there was anyway to get the db size down? I have a database that I call Directory. We use this Directory to find which database a record is in. Currently I have to import records from all of my other databases manually so that the directory will be up to date. I would like to be able to enter a new record into any of my databases and have that record automatically show up in the directory. I think that I could probably get it done with a portal, but so far have not had any luck. Is that the best way to accomplish this or should I use an alternate method? I have a database that groups records according to a category with a component to check for New Record ID number duplications. A script automatically summons a separate table, Current ID Numbers In Use, to display all the found existing ID numbers for the selected category. The table uses a portal with a related field, ::ID_#_[Fabrication], from the main database component. The table now lists the entire database's ID numbers, not the found set which the main component has isolated. What do I need to do to display only the found numbers? TIA

I have often volunteered to help my son and daughter's school out with their computers. Several years ago they had someone design a FMP program that keeps track of their students. It has been working fine until right before summer break. Apparently, the program freezes a lot. Often after freezing it can't find part of the database and they have to do a recovery (they have done this several times). Now a couple of their students "have a blank file."
