My web server admin console is not working correctly. Even though I can access my data files using filemaker clients, iwp, and custom web publishing, the web server admin console shows nothing under published databases. Also, when I try to use the web server admin console to turn IWP on or off, it tells me to restart the web server and the wpengine, but when I do those things, it still tells me that I have to do those things, and the change I made does not register. Can anyone help me with this? Please?

Hi all, I have a solution that has been running fine on FMSA 7 for a long time. Recently upgraded to FMSA 8 and thought it was fine, but discovered a weird problem today. One layout in the database has a basic "time log" type portal on it. It shows a given day on the layout, and the portal shows any activities for that day. Each record in the portal has a text field for "activity type" (choose from a dropdown that is populated from a value list) and a field for hours (also from a value list). Below the portal is a button linked to a script. The script only has two commands: 1. Commit Record/Request 2. Open Record/Request When viewed via IWP, this h…

I am trying to configure FM server 8 & WPE on XP SP2 laptop. I have followed all the steps from the documentation earlier and have configured the same on 2 different servers without problem. This time while configuring on XP SP2 laptop it is returning with continuous error. When I access WPE admin console at http://localhost/fmi/config it allows me to enter with the set password. On the very next page when I click on to start configuring and click on next button it returns with an error "You session timed out or was terminated". I tried searching for troubleshooting this on the net but I didn't find anything. Can you please help with the same ASAP? L…

I have recently implemented an Ipsec VPN that allows remote FM users to access our work FM 8 Server - no real problems other than fairly fiddly VPN setups at both ends; but eventually got the Billion home wireless modem router to talk to the central Netgear FVS318. But access is limited to a single home location - I cannot take my laptop and connect from somewhere else. I have read about SSL VPNs which seem to allow web based access without relying on hardware "handshaking" (for want of a better term). Does anyone know if FM8.5 can access "remote" FM Server 8.0 files via a SSL VPN (e.g. the Billion Biguard S5)?

Does anyone know if it is possible to host a FileMaker database over the Internet so that users can log in using a regular FileMaker Pro client? Rather than building a separate IWP interface. I presume that it may be possible to do this by opening the correct ports on the server and then directing the FileMaker client to the domain or IP address of the server.

(The database will be hosted on a Mac using FM Server Advanced) Object: I want to publish a PDF file in Filemaker that a client can view on the web, then make any corrections they need and upload the amended file back into Filemaker (or a folder or however it will work) Many thanks in advance for your help Peter

Hello, I'm pretty new to Filemaker Pro Adv. 8.5. I would like to setup a basic network so that I can have about 3-4 clients on this network. I'm having trouble figuring out what exactly I need to do to be able to have the computers on the LAN network, along with having my computer at home be able to access the database here at work. (I'm guessing that would be the WAN network) Thanks I'd really appreciate any help.

MacG5 running 10.4.8, FMS8A v.4, My files appear in IWP, and I can access them via remote client, Blackbelt, and CWP using FX.php. But.... in the WPAC under published databases, nothing appears. Also, when I use the WPAC to change anything, like shutting off IWP, it tells me I have to restart the web server and the administration console. I have turned everything off and restarted the server, FMS8A via the FMS Amin Console, restarted the WPE, and still get this same set of red messages. Anyone have any ideas.

Everyone, I'm quite proficient at Filemaker but I'm new to the world of VPN. What I've got (on a Mac) is FileMaker Server 8, a software-based VPN (VPN Tracker Server) running behind a hardware Firewall (Watchguard). On the Firewall, only IPSec ports are opened. There is NO specific rule for ports 5003 (TCP/UDP) because my assumption is that once I'm connected with the VPN, all the traffic will go through the IPSec tunnel. The result is that from the remote location I can "see" my hosted files (I had to add a "favorite server" for that) BUT, I cannot open them. When trying to open a file, FileMaker asks for my username/password (so it IS actu…

I have five FM files on FMS7. One is an opener file so to speak (it is on the server, not on clients) with checkboxes for each of the other four. The opener file sets a global field based on the user's login name. After selecting which of the other four files a user wants to open, s/he clicks "OK" and those files open. The login name is then used in all the other, newly opened files, for entry in certain fields. To ensure that the login name is used in each of the other four databases, I want to circumvent the user from opening these files directly (Open Remote and Open Recent). I realize I could consolidate all the files into one, and there may be a way to have the …

Hi - I'm trying to implement a filemaker setup which shares data between two offices connected via a WAN VPN. In initial testing, it's become obvious that we need to upgrade the bandwidth of one of the offices. Currently, one office has a 768/768 connection, while the other is 384/384. However, I haven't been able to find any specs on what is actually required to do this. I have seen posts that show that other people have been able to successfully share a database over a WAN, but haven't found any details. SO, my question is: 1) What is the minimum amount of upload and download bandwidth needed to share a Filemaker database (using the FM client, not the web client) …

I want to aggregate selected content from a large number of web sites that are maintained by a variety of groups in my organization, for the purpose of producing a portal or master catalog. One possible approach is to supply appropriate XML tags to be inserted into individual sites, then crawl the sites to pull the content into FileMaker Server. Someone has suggested to me that the FileMaker Web Viewer functionality might be part of the solution, but I did not get clarity on precisely how that would work. I would be interested in hearing about alternative approaches. Thanks in advance.

Something happened to the computer we're running FileMaker Server Advanced on and now I can't get the web part of it to work. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the web publishing software, but I can't even get into the administration console at http://localhost/fmi/config - this produces an internal server error from Apache (error 500 - see for yourself at http://medlem.venstre.no ). Can't seem to get this working. In the server (8.0v4) auto update folder I have added zippscript which I know isn't on any of the clients. Also on the client tab on the server console I have the auto update selected. On the client machine I tested using 8.5v1 Advanced I connected to one of the databases hosted (with Auto update plugin ticked) and was hoping for it to look on the server and see that there was a new plug-in and download it but nothing? Is there something else I need to do? Some help would be most excellent! Thanks

I am working with a small non-profit. We usually have 2 concurrent users on a development/fundraising db, rarely up to 4 concurrent users. We own 7 licenses, but recently the library db has moved to the web view method and that seems to satisfy that group. That db was used primarily in a read only mode, so the web viewer is ideal for that. Lately we have added a bunch of tables to the more intensively used database and more and more I seet the coffee cup or get weird results, like being moved to a layout I was not using. I am wondering if this meeans time to try to get FMP Server? Is there something I should read on this? This is an all windows environmen…

Hi Everyone : Good News for Windows users that want to use FileMaker Server Advanced, Apache and Windows. While developing our new product "BlackBelt" http://fmwebschool.com/frm/index.php?topic=836.0 (allows you to run CDML on FileMaker 7-8.5) we needed to test in multiple server environments. We discovered by simply adding a line of code to the Apache httpd file and a couple lines of code to a couple other files we were able to run FMSA on Windows. Up until now, only IIS was the supported server to run the FileMaker Server Advanced Web Publishing Engine. However, Apache is a very popular web server for both Windows and Mac platforms and includes a lot o…

Hi, I have been approached to build a database for a small library operation, that journals can be borrowed from etc. The client has asked for it to be accessible from the web (outside our intranet), what Filemaker software do I need to get to do this - I was thinking Filemaker 8.5 Advanced to do the development in, and then Advanced Server to roll it out on... do I need a special computer to run it off - or can it run on a web server? Cheers, Dan :(

I have an FMP server here in San Francisco and want to host the same database on a server in Tokyo for speed and accessibility issues. Is it possible to use a product like EMC Replistor to keep the files current on both servers and have the SF users access the SF server and the Japanese users to access the Tokyo server? Would anyone have a suggestion as to how this would be accomplished. Does anyone know of a situation like this that exists? HELP!!! Thanks, Kenny

I have scheduled daily backups of all database and that is working great. My questions is how do I restore a database from backup? I have looked through all the help files and searched online but only could find information about the recovery of a corupt database. If anybody can provide assistance I would greatly apperciate it. Customer needs to have a database restored due to accidentally deleting records. Thanks

One of my files uses scripts to create & delete user accounts. This works fine in general. However, a few months ago, I tried to use this feature while connected to a flakey wireless connection. My connection dropped in the midst of processing, and I was left with a "ghost account" -- the account had no name or password, and could not be edited, deleted, or disabled. The file worked fine, in spite of this. HOWEVER -- it turns out the file was hopelessly corrupted. The automated backups were corrupted, and in fact, once I closed the file in FM Server, it would never open again. (See http://fmforums.com/forum/showtopic.php?fid/46/tid/184609 for a discussi…

Hi! I lost my ODBC-connection. Very confusing. The ODBC-client driver SequeLink says error 2306 "TCP/IP Error, connection refused" (on localhost, port 2399). Found a suggestion in the DataDirect-helpfiles to run netstat -a to see if the server is listening on port 2399, its not. Is it the xDBC plugin that has stopped to work? ODBC is allowed in FMSA admin. Everything else works fine, including WPE. ODBC has been running fine on our Win2000Server for months until last friday when we had to take the PDC (Win2003SBS) offline a short while to make more space on the system partition (for that reason we moved the mailserver-files to another partition). After running the fmsweb_8v4_osx_updater, I tried to verify the results through the admin console overview page. There it said "The Publishing Engine is not responding. If the Publishing Engine has not yet been configured, click here to continue." So I did, and then it asked for the WPE Admin User name and password. This I had recorded in my copy of the manual, but upon entering these, the response was "The Publishing Engine user name or password is not valid". (Meanwhile, the server happily continues to publish the databases.) Is it possible to retrieve what the system thinks the WPE admin username/password is, or re-establish the original entry?

Hi, Here is something I have been fighting all day at work. I had a db on the FM Server 8, I made a copy and took it home to make some changes (just some layout changes and one custom function which I have done before)…I took the file back and placed it on the server but it would not open. The server would automatically close the file, when I selected open all DB’s. I messed around with it most of the day to no avail, then I just did a clone and placed it on the server and it opened it right up for use. (of course when I say open up, I mean open and available for users to access over our network) Anyone ever seen anything like this before? A…

I have one rather large and complex company database. From this one db, I intend on hosting 2 secured sites (meaning user name and password protected using Filemaker's internal security and CWP) and also augmenting another portion of the website with non-sensitive, non protected data. Obviously, the non-sensitive stuff need not have the user enter a user name and password. Those web visitors should be completely free to view the information represented on those pages unencumbered. So to this effect, I have created all the user names and passwords for the 2 "secured" sites and I am left only to set privileges for the non secure site. But when I turn on "Gues…

Hi, We have FM Server 8 running on Win2003, Dual Xeon 3GHz, 4GB DDR2, 3x73 SCSI RAID 5. We have about 20 clients each sharing 2 files thus the server is currently serving 40 files over WAN on a dedicated 100Mbit/s pipe. Performance optimization in this scenario is critical. Average latency from a home network (cable/dsl) in NY to our server in TX is about 60ms. Most clients are in NY. What would be the best optimal performance setting for the server? Enable or Disable SSL? Amount of cache? and the cache flush distribution? What should be the minimal latency and bandwidth? Certain customers seem to have performance issues even though they are on the high bandwidt…

Hi everyone, I'm real green with instant web publishing. I'm using FileMaker Pro 8 I can get it to work great on another Mac Computer (Safari - web brower) within my own home. I have built a nice server based time clock solution. The only problem is that someone figured out that by changing the time on their computer, they can clock in at any time they want to. Short of locking the System Prefs on everyones computers, or firing someone for forging their timecards, is there a way to fix this? Is there a way I could use the time on a remote computer for my timestamps? I have a computer that I can dedicate to the cause. TIA, .sly

Hi, I'm having a problem with the company database. We are using FM Server 8 and some FMP8, FMP8.5 and FMP8A. All of them have their own license. Now we cannot work anybody!! I'm converting a sizeable FM6 system to FM8 and am attempting to get best performance with respect to file references. At the moment I am making all file references the same format as follows: fmnet:/12.34.56.78/filename fmnet:/*/filename file:/filename This is as optimised as I can think for a server which is at 12.34.56.78. The "*" option is superfluous, however it gives me the opportunity to switch ip addresses on the server without too much impact in a live system. Originally I just had the "file" method, but there is a performance increase when you target the server using "fmnet" Any one think of anything better?

Hi, I have a client that is getting ready to upgrade their existing FM (7) solution and they are asking for some advice. They design/print stickers. So, there are graphics files involved here. At the moment, I have them talked into having a stand alone machine to run Server 8.0v4 (with Mac OSX Server as operating system). But they'd have to save them as well on another drive where the art guy would access them and edit them as necess…

I would think that this was asked a million times already, but I can't find a good response. Our university has a dependency on Apache 2.2 (apache2 for the searchbots) for the purposes of web-based authentication. We are using FM Server 8 Advanced and can't seem to get the mod_jk_fm.so to load. Apache 2 says it's "garbled" and we think that it might be only good to work with Apache 1.3. Which would stink. The httpd.conf file syntax is fine otherwise, except when that module is called. Calling FM, they gave me the standard line, "It's only supported on Apache 1.3" but... that can't be, right? Has anyone any resources for deploying Apache 2.2 with …

General question about FMP and FMP Server. I have a general DB file on temp server 1 (FMP server running). Move this file to another folder on a permanent server because the temp was decomissioned. During this movement, the file seemed to lock me out as the admin. Message: Can't modify pops up. How can I get back into file options to change/address this problem? I do not have FMP server training so I don't know the concepts behind the potential problem (reason for asking). I just want my group to be able to use this file and understand why the file changes it's options by moving between folders and servers?

We would like to use FM Server 8 Advanced for its web publishing capabilities. However, our company runs novell networking instead of Windows AD. I couldn't find anything on FM's website and the FM pre-sales tech folks suggested I come here and post since they had no answer. Any idea if novell can coexist with Novell? TIA!

I'm looking for a way to have a FileMaker Server 8 Advanced host act as a mail server, with mail triggered on both a schedule and certain trigger events in the hosted database (ie: a specific button on a layout is clicked). Users will access the hosted databased via both FileMaker Pro clients and via a web interface. Anyone have any suggestions?

I've got Filemaker 8.5 and Filemaker Server 8, but what I'm interested in here is ordinary Filemaker Pro 8.5 at the moment because I use it for testing. The advertising blurb says that you can connect via JDBC to ordinary Filemaker Pro 8.5 from the same machine, not from another machine. Fine, but I've been trying for a whole day to connect to the port they say is waiting for jdbc connections which is 2399. There's a TestJdbc programme that I've installed and have been using, but although the driver is alive and well it can't get anything other than Connection Refused out of the 2399 port. I've got all the necessary permissions done, the user I'm trying t…

I'm using Filemaker Server Advanced 8 on Mac OS X Tiger Server. Trying to use a custom homepage (iwp_home.html) but the graphics on the page won't display. All text and formatting appears but no images. Weird. I've messed with permissions for those files etc and nothing seems to clear this up. Images are in the same folder (IWP) as the iwp_home.html page. I used the same custom html page with simple IWP on Filemaker and that worked fine, but under server advanced it doesn't work. Anybody know what's going on here? Thank you for your consideration. Will

Hello, I am having problems hosting the FM solution "Work Requests". It seems that FMPro clients see an incomplete UI; there are missing file placeholders, no labels on buttons, etc. It seems the functionality is still there, it's just that one has to have memorized the UI completely. In web version (hosted through CWP in Server 8 Advanced) certain graphic elements are also missing. My feeling is that these two issues are related, but I am at a loss to figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

After overnight maintenance (?) with TechTool pro 4 (Mac OSX 10.4.8), two processes keep interfering with starting up my FMP files (with the error message that another file is already hosted on this computer): - fmserverd - fmserver_helperd Also as soon as I start up FMP, I see FM Web Publishin with the Activity Monitor Despite turning all settings for this off; - sharing options, - removed all sample databases from root/Library/FileMakerServer/data/databases - disabled web publishing from SystemPrefs I get tired of killing the above processes with Terminal or the Activity Monitor. More importantly, I would like to understand what is causing th…

I am a little confused over as to what the (localhost) address is suppose to be when you load FileMaker Server 8, the first pop-up dialog that asks you to connect. By default it is 127.0.0.1. I have tried the IP of the computer I am trying to host it says: Could not connect to FileMaker Server "(X.X.X.X)". Is it not that I am trying to setup the computer as a server to host the database?? so why do I have to connect, others connects to me?? What IP is suppose to go in there? Thanks

I own a prospecting service that supplies my customers with sales leads and contact info. I want to build a contact management application (Like Act! or Goldmine) to distribute my info to my clients so that they don't have to re-enter the information. This info is RENTED to my clients so therefore I do not want them to be able to export/download/copy this information. In such an application I would have three parent tables: Properties, Company's, and Contacts and I would own the info in these tables. My clients would own and enter the information in the child tables which would include Notes, Call History, Activities, etc. I would like to find a way to limit the amo…

FileMaker Server 7 is on Windows 2003 for Small Business Server. I am totally new at this. I need to be hand-held in this area. My server recently crashed, power supply, but got it repaired. But now the clients cannot access the filemaker server. They open up the program on the client workstation, open remote and nothing shows up in the right pane. The address is there, 192.168.16.2, is that the right address? Or is it 127.0.0.0? I spoke with a guy on the phone from support and he says looks like it's corrupt. He had me copy one of the DB files form the server to the client desktop to access it that way. So I opened FileMaker, opened the copied file, and it asked for a …

I was getting a conflict with Apple's Personal Web sharing, so in the dialog that Filemaker put up asking for a new port, I entered "81". It hasn't worked since, and I'm not sure where to change IWP's port back to. (Advanced settings in IWP is grayed out, presumably cause I can't start IWP). I've tried trashing the .plist, zapping PRAM, I still can't turn on IWP. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Hi, I'm trying to figure out if I've got a server bottleneck or if I've got some other issue. I've got a db with about 616K recs that is about 220MB in size. It's FMS8v4 running on an older W2K3 box, 1GB RAM, with dual 1Ghz Xeons and a RAID10 system. This box is targeted for upgrading shortly, so please don't tell me I need some newer hardware. The system CPU monitors never peg, it never runs out of resources, indexing is off, AV scanning is off. I have a function that loops through a portal that displays the results of a complex, multikey join to the above table and writes a unique ID into a temporary printsession field. Then, I call a process that queries the ab…

I reconfigured my backups so that I was backing up to an external drive rather than FM's "default" folder. While I can conceive of other ways to back up for redundancy's sake, I just re-routed to a firewire external drive. It worked fine--for a day. I didn't bother the to check again until a week later and noticed that nothing had been backed up since the Friday before (the day it was configured). I check the schedules to be sure they were all active--they were. Then I checked the path, they were all the same but NOW I get "Not a valid Path." NOT A VALID PATH?! What the heck. It was valid when it was set up, the dang thing is still connected like it was last week! I…

Folks, I am looking for feedback from anyone who has hosted applications via IWP/FMSA 8.x with multiple files to many users. I have not found much "heres what you can expect" information published anywhere. Having been part of the vendor community for a long time, I full-well understand there are published specs and then there's what you can really expect, so... Feedback wanted: ----------------- Who has experience with this type of deployment on FMSA 8.x and IWP? - relatively small app/file, available only through IWP - many deployed instances of the app/file per server - low user count per app/file - high overall user count per server …

I have a application for a group of seven folks who are accessing a remote file on a server. I would like to create a shortcut on the desktop that will automatically open the remote file... WITHOUT: (1st)opening Filemaker on their machine, (2) clicking Cancel at the "what to open screen", (3) selecting "open recent" and then the top file. Is there a way to do this? If not is there a way to create a "fake database" on each of their computers that will link them to the remote database within FM? Thanks for your help, Kyle

We recently placed one of the files we're working on, onto FMS 5, and the scripts don't seem to be working appropriately, 2 of them specifically. These are meant to be accessed online via the Instant Web Publishing interface. In general these scripts retrieve files by pausing, allowing for data entry into a field and then clicking a button to resume the script. For some reason, the scripts seem to stop after they pause. Any ideas? Whenever we serve up the file via FMP 8 advanced via the IWP the scripts work perfectly fine, so I am convinced that all the steps are web-compatible. Are there certain script steps or actions we need to be aware of that behave diffe…

I am evaluating FMPro for a project. This project is a many-to-many solution with two parent tables and numerous child tables. All tables except one of the parent tables will be on local machines. The one parent table will be on a remote host and will be read only. I'm thinking that since it is a a read only table I may be able to use a VPN instead of FMPro server? As I understand it the runtime of FMPro cannot access a remote file? This means I would need to purchase a copy of FMPro for every user. As I could have 500 - 1000 users this won't work. Any other ideas of how I could do this within FMPro? Any ideas of other solutions that might work for this? I've looked into …

Hi, We just upgraded Filemaker Server 7 Advanced to version 8 Advanced. I created a script that loops through all the records in a large database and measures the time it takes to complete. I was astonished to learn that it repeatedly takes around 40 seconds to complete on macs (g4 and g5 machines) while it takes *1 second* ! to complete on windows 2000 and XP machines. All the machines are on the same LAN. Could someone explain why this is and let me know if there is any way to improve the mac performance ? Also, the mac performance got worse after the upgrade to version 8 server , and the PC performance improved. (what the ?) It was te…

I am new to Filemaker Server and am trying to get up to speed on how to program to make the most efficient use of it. Hello, I have 6 databases shared, all in the same folder, using FMS8. I can connect remotely to each using the FM server client. I can "see" and work with 5 of six using web publishing. I'm a complete newbie here and desperately need some help....We are on FMP Server 5.5 running on Windows 2003 Standard....we weren't always running on this platform; previously, we had our database running on a iMac OS 9.2 until it literally died. I’m having a problem with logging on a FM8 Advanced Server. I have 2 physical servers, both running Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition. One server is the FMSA8 host, the other runs IIS and the WPE piece. I am able to successfully publish FileMaker data to the web, but there is a strange logging problem. Every time the WPE sends a request to the FMSA8 server, data is returned successfully but an error is logged in the Windows security log file. (see below) This error is only cosmetic, but it’s beginning to be a problem for log auditing – It takes a lot of digging to tell which errors are legitimate failed user login attempts from FMPro clients and which are invalid error…

Hi all. I've been searching for answer on this but can't find it. I want to upgrade server 5.5 to 8.5. All the database design, scripts and other conversions aside, is there anything to think about when it comes to the server software upgrade? If any problem occurs I want to be able to shut down the server 8.5 and restart server 5.5. Is that possible? Regards /U

Ok so since a true syncing solution isn't cost effective what I would like to do is have a cacheing type solution. Here is the situation: I have a server and 5 mobile users. They are using a database for contact management. What I would like to do is set t so when users open the application it attempts to connect to the server so they have full access to the database however, if a connection cannot be established it will bring up a cached version that was downloaded that last time they connected. When they are working offline they will have limited ability to browse only and not edit the records. Is there an example script out there for this? I am of the mindset that…

Our office is currently running FM Sever 7, and has about 8 people running FMPro 8.5 or 8.5 advanced clients. We are having performance issues when certain scripts are run, as well in day to day use. Will upgrading to FM Server 8 have any significant performance boosts? A side issue, which maybe should be asked in a different section of the forums is what kind of machine is recommended for running the server? We have about 30 different databases, some small, some big, that all interact with each other. The application is in constant use throughout the day, and it manages our entire calendar system, client requests, and many other things. We currently are…

We have FMSA 8 set up one one server as a test server. We need to move the file into production, but leave the test server up. Is it best practice to use a different server, or is it common to host both files running on the same server? We only have one license for FMSA 8. I would assume that means we cannot install another copy of the software. Is it possible to install it on two different networks or is that a violation of licensing agreement?

Hello, We're trying to evaluate whether we should purchase a large number of licenses (around 15) of FileMaker Pro, or just purchase Adv Server and use IWP for all our internal connections. The breaking point would be if Adv Server using IWP cannot print summary reports. I noticed in my FM Pro 8.5 Adv that if I check the "Indicate Web Compatibility" box in the Scriptmaker that the Print commands and the Preview Mode command both are grayed out. Since summary reports require you to sort by the break field and can only be viewed as summary reports in Preview Mode, does this mean that you cannot print or view summary reports using IWP? If that's the case, I do…
